We study solutions to the Cauchy problem for the linear and nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a quadratic Hamiltonian depending on time. For the linear case the evolution operator can be expressed as an integral operator with the explicit formula for the kernel. As a consequence, conditions for local and global in time Strichartz estimates can be established. For the nonlinear case we show local well-posedness. As a particular case we obtain well-posedness for the damped harmonic nonlinear Schroedinger equation.
In this paper, we consider stochastic Schroedinger equations with two-dimensional white noise. Such equations are used to describe the evolution of an open quantum system undergoing a process of continuous measurement. Representations are obtained for solutions of such equations using a generalization to the stochastic case of the classical construction of Feynman path integrals over trajectories in the phase space.
Within the framework of self-adjoint operator of time in non-relativistic quantum mechanics some properties of solutions of Schroedinger equation, related to Hilbert space formalism, are investigated for two types of time dependent Hamiltonian.
We construct one soliton solutions for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with variable quadratic Hamiltonians in a unified form by taking advantage of a complete (super) integrability of generalized harmonic oscillators. The soliton wave evolution in external fields with variable quadratic potentials is totally determined by the linear problem, like motion of a classical particle with acceleration, and the (self-similar) soliton shape is due to a subtle balance between the linear Hamiltonian (dispersion and potential) and nonlinearity in the Schroedinger equation by the standards of soliton …
We show, in general, how to transform the nonautonomous nonlinear Schroedinger equation with quadratic Hamiltonians into the standard autonomous form that is completely integrable by the familiar inverse scattering method in nonlinear science. Derivation of the corresponding equivalent nonisospectral Lax pair is outlined. A few simple integrable systems are discussed.
Some exactly solvable potentials in the position dependent mass background are generated whose bound states are given in terms of Laguerre- or Jacobi-type $X_1$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials. These potentials are shown to be shape invariant and isospectral to the potentials whose bound state solutions involve classical Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials.
We prove the limiting absorption principle and discuss the continuity properties of the boundary values of the resolvent for a class of form bounded perturbations of the Euclidean Laplacian $Δ$ that covers both short and long range potentials with an essentially optimal behaviour at infinity.
We derive some consequences of very recent results of Cordero and Nicola on the metaplectic representation, the Wiener amalgam spaces, (whose definition is due to Feichtinger), and their applications to the regularity of the solutions of Schroedinger equation with quadratic Weyl symbol. We do not however discuss the validity of Cordero and Nicola's claims.
In this paper we give a sharper condition for the blow-up of the solution to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation with free/Stark/quadratic potential by improving the well known Zakharov-Glassey's method.
We consider a time-dependent one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a symmetric potential double well represented by two delta interactions. Among our results we give an explicit formula for the integral kernel of the unitary semigroup associated with the linear part of the Hamiltonian. Then we establish the corresponding Strichartz-type estimate and we prove local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the original nonlinear problem.
In this short communication I generalize the method of obtaining quasi-Feynman formulas described in my previous paper on that topic. The theorem presented allows to obtain the solution to the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger equation with the Hamiltonian decomposed to a finite sum of operators. The concept of Chernoff tangency is used, and the solution is written in the form of a quasi-Feynman formula as before. Theorem proven is compared to known approximation theorems: Trotter's, Chernoff's, Butko-Schilling-Smolyanov's.
The following comparison rules for the discrete spectrum of the position-dependent mass (PDM) Schroedinger equation are established. (i) If a constant mass $m_0$ and a PDM $m(x)$ are ordered everywhere, that is either $m_0\leq m(x)$ or $m_0\geq m(x)$, then the corresponding eigenvalues of the constant-mass Hamiltonian and of the PDM Hamiltonian with the same potential and the BenDaniel-Duke ambiguity parameters are ordered. (ii) The corresponding eigenvalues of PDM Hamiltonians with the different sets of ambiguity parameters are ordered if $\nabla^2 (1/m(x))$ has a definite sign. We prove thes…
In this paper, we study the discrete cubic nonlinear Schroedinger lattice under Hamiltonian perturbations. First we develop a complete isospectral theory relevant to the hyperbolic structures of the lattice without perturbations. In particular, Backlund-Darboux transformations are utilized to generate heteroclinic orbits and Melnikov vectors. Then we give coordinate-expressions for persistent invariant manifolds and Fenichel fibers for the perturbed lattice. Finally based upon the above machinery, existence of codimension 2 transversal homoclinic tubes is established through a Melnikov type ca…
Global in time dispersive estimates for the Schroedinger and wave evolutions are obtained on manifolds with conical ends whose Hamiltonian flow exhibits trapping. This paper deals with the case of initial data with fixed "nonzero angular momentum".
We prove dynamical upper bounds for discrete one-dimensional Schroedinger operators in terms of various spacing properties of the eigenvalues of finite volume approximations. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach by a study of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian.
It is shown that the ground-state eigenvalue of a semirelativistic Hamiltonian of the form H = sqrt(m^2+p^2) + V is bounded below by the Schroedinger operator m + beta p^2 + V, for suitable beta > 0. An example is discussed.
In an abstract framework, a new concept on time operator, ultra-weak time operator, is introduced, which is a concept weaker than that of weak time operator. Theorems on the existence of an ultra-weak time operator are established. As an application of the theorems, it is shown that Schroedinger operators H with potentials V obeying suitable conditions, including the Hamiltonian of the hydrogen atom, have ultra-weak time operators. Moreover, a class of Borel measurable functions $f$ such that $f(H)$ has an ultra-weak time operator is found.
Summation formulas are obtained for products of associated Lagurre polynomials by means of the Green's function K for the Hamiltonian H = -{d^2\over dx^2} + x^2 + Ax^{-2}, A > 0. K is constructed by an application of a Mercer type theorem that arises in connection with integral equations. The new approach introduced in this paper may be useful for the construction of wider classes of generating function.
We present quadratic dynamical invariant and evaluate Berry's phase for the time-dependent Schroedinger equation with the most general variable quadratic Hamiltonian.
Problems posed by semirelativistic Hamiltonians of the form H = sqrt{m^2+p^2} + V(r) are studied. It is shown that energy upper bounds can be constructed in terms of certain related Schroedinger operators; these bounds include free parameters which can be chosen optimally.
In this paper we study the behavior of solutions of a nonlinear Schroedinger equation in presence of an external potential, which is allowed to be singular at one point. We show that the solution behaves like a solitary wave for long time even if we start from a unstable solitary wave, and its dynamics coincide with that of a classical particle evolving according to a natural effective Hamiltonian.
Here we shall consider the idea that the Hamiltonian evolution of a quantum system is generated by sequential observations of the system by a `pseudo-apparatus'. This representation of Hamiltonian dynamics, originally discovered by Belavkin, is a canonical dilation of the Schroedinger equation that reveals a Minkowski space structure outside of the context of Special Relativity. In particular, this formalism gives rise to the notion of a Boosted Schroedinger equation referred to a dilated time increment which is the manifestation of a Lorentz transform in the Minkowski space of the apparatus.
We study the Schroedinger equation of a class of two-level systems under the action of a periodic time-dependent external field in the situation where the energy difference 2epsilon between the free energy levels is sufficiently small with respect to the strength of the external interaction. Under suitable conditions we show that this equation has a solution in terms of converging power series expansions in epsilon. In contrast to other expansion methods, like in the Dyson expansion, the method we present is not plagued by the presence of ``secular terms''. Due to this feature we were able to …
An exactly solvable position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation in two dimensions, depicting a particle moving in a semi-infinite layer, is re-examined in the light of recent theories describing superintegrable two-dimensional systems with integrals of motion that are quadratic functions of the momenta. To get the energy spectrum a quadratic algebra approach is used together with a realization in terms of deformed parafermionic oscillator operators. In this process, the importance of supplementing algebraic considerations with a proper treatment of boundary conditions for selecting physical w…
Global in time dispersive estimates for the Schroedinger and wave evolutions are obtained on manifolds with conical ends whose Hamiltonian flow exhibits trapping. This paper deals with the case of initial data with "zero angular momentum".
In this work we compute the families of classical Hamiltonians in two degrees of freedom in which the Normal Variational Equation around an invariant plane falls in Schroedinger type with polynomial or trigonometrical potential. We analyze the integrability of Normal Variational Equation in Liouvillian sense using the Kovacic's algorithm. We compute all Galois groups of Schroedinger type equations with polynomial potential. We also introduce a method of algebrization that transforms equations with transcendental coefficients in equations with rational coefficients without changing essentially …
We consider linear and quadratic integrals of motion for general variable quadratic Hamiltonians. Fundamental relations between the eigenvalue problem for linear dynamical invariants and solutions of the corresponding Cauchy initial value problems for the time-dependent Schroedinger equation are emphasized. An eigenfunction expansionof the solution of the initial value problem is also found. A nonlinear superposition principle for the generalized Ermakov systems is established as a result of decomposition of the general quadratic invariant in terms of the linear ones.
The Laplacian in an unbounded tubular neighbourhood of a hyperplane with non-Hermitian complex-symmetric Robin-type boundary conditions is investigated in the limit when the width of the neighbourhood diminishes. We show that the Laplacian converges in a norm resolvent sense to a self-adjoint Schroedinger operator in the hyperplane whose potential is expressed solely in terms of the boundary coupling function. As a consequence, we are able to explain some peculiar spectral properties of the non-Hermitian Laplacian by known results for Schroedinger operators.
We introduce a novel approach for defining a $δ'$-interaction on a subset of the real line of Lebesgue measure zero which is based on Sturm-Liouville differential expression with measure coefficients. This enables us to establish basic spectral properties (e.g., self-adjointness, lower semiboundedness and spectral asymptotics) of Hamiltonians with $δ'$-interactions concentrated on sets of complicated structures.
We consider a two-dimensional integrable Hamiltonian system with a vector and scalar potential in quantum mechanics. Contrary to the case of a pure scalar potential, the existence of a second order integral of motion does not guarantee the separation of variables in the Schroedinger equation. We introduce the concept of "quasiseparation of variables" and show that in many cases it allows us to reduce the calculation of the energy spectrum and wave functions to linear algebra.
We prove some uniform in $ε$ a priori estimates for solutions of the equation $$(\nabla-iA)^2u-V(x)u+(λ\pm iε)u=f, λ\geq0, ε\neq0.$$ The estimates are obtained in terms of Morrey-Campanato norms, and can be used to prove absence of zero-resonances, in a suitable sense, for electromagnetic Hamiltonians. Precise conditions on the size of the \textit{trapping component} of the magnetic field and the non repulsive component of the electric field are given.
We construct the integrals of motion for several models of the quantum damped oscillators in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics in a framework of a general approach to the time-dependent Schroedinger equation with variable quadratic Hamiltonians. An extension of Lewis-Riesenfeld dynamical invariant is given. The time-evolution of the expectation values of the energy related positive operators is determined for the oscillators under consideration. A proof of uniqueness of the corresponding Cauchy initial value problem is discussed as an application.
A remarkable extension of Rayleigh-Schroedinger perturbation method is found. Its (N+q) x (N+1) - dimensional Hamiltonians (as emerging, e.g., during quasi-exact constructions of bound states) are non-square matrices at q > 1. The role of an eigenvalue is played by an energy/coupling q-plet. In all orders, its perturbations are defined via a q-dimensional inversion.
The effect of the control on bipartite entanglement is discussed from a geometric viewpoint for a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system as a model of the n-qubit control system. The Hamiltonian of the model is the sum of the drift and control Hamiltonians, each of which describes the interaction between pairs of qubits and between one of qubits and an external magnetic field, respectively. According to a bipartite partition, the Schroedinger equation for the NMR system is put in the matrix form. This paper gives a solution to the Schroedinger equation with the assumptions of small coupling a…
We represent low dimensional quantum mechanical Hamiltonians by moderately sized finite matrices that reproduce the lowest O(10) boundstate energies and wave functions to machine precision. The method extends also to Hamiltonians that are neither Hermitian nor PT symmetric and thus allows to investigate whether or not the spectra in such cases are still real. Furthermore, the approach is especially useful for problems in which a position-dependent mass is adopted, for example in effective-mass models in solid-state physics or in the approximate treatment of coupled nuclear motion in molecular …
In this paper we consider the stationary Schroedinger equation for a self-conjugated Hamiltonian $H = \frac{e+f}{i}$, where $e$ and $f$ is an anti-unitary pair of the canonical Cartan "creating" and "annihilation" operators for the classical Lie algebra $sl_2$ taken in the representation with "the lowest weight equals to $1$". In this paper we prove that this operator has the continuous spectrum. Construction of eigenstates for $H$ is given in details.
We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two space dimensions with an attractive potential. We study the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear bound states, i.e. periodic in time localized in space solutions. Our result shows that all solutions with small, localized in space initial data, converge to the set of bound states. Therefore, the center manifold in this problem is a global attractor. The proof hinges on dispersive estimates that we obtain for the non-autonomous, non-Hamiltonian, linearized dynamics around the bound states.
An asymptotic approach for a Schroedinger type equation with a non selfadjoint slowly varying Hamiltonian of a special type is developed. The Hamiltonian is assumed to be the result of a small perturbation of an operator with a twofold degeneracy (turning) point, which can be diagonalized at this point. The non-adiabatic transformation of modes is studied in the case where two small parameters are dependent: the parameter characterizing an order of the perturbation is a square root of the adiabatic parameter. The perturbation of the Hamiltonian produces a close pair of simple degeneracy points…
This second part deals with applications of a general method to describe the quantum time evolution determined by a Schroedinger equation with time-dependent Hamiltonian. A new aspect of our approach is that we find all solutions starting from one special solution. The two main applications are reviewed, namely the Bloch equations and the harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency. Even in these well-known examples some new results are obtained.
Let $V_Γ$ be a lattice periodic potential and $A$ and $ϕ$ external electromagnetic potentials which vary slowly on the scale set by the lattice spacing. It is shown that the Wigner function of a solution of the Schroedinger equation with Hamiltonian operator $H = {1/2} (-\I\nabla_x - A(εx))^2 + V_Γ(x) + ϕ(εx)$ propagates along the flow of the semiclassical model of solid states physics up an error of order $ε$. If $ε$-dependent corrections to the flow are taken into account, the error is improved to order $ε^2$. We also discuss the propagation of the Wigner measure. The results are obtained as…
We discuss a new completely integrable case of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation in $R^n$ with variable coefficients for a modified oscillator, which is dual with respect to the time inversion to a model of the quantum oscillator recently considered by Meiler, Cordero-Soto, and Suslov. A second pair of dual Hamiltonians is also found in the momentum representation. Our examples show that in mathematical physics and quantum mechanics a change in the direction of time may require a total change of the system dynamics in order to return the system back to its original quantum state. Partic…
Based on the Caputo fractional derivative the classical, non relativistic Hamiltonian is quantized leading to a fractional Schroedinger type wave equation. The free particle solutions are localized in space. Solutions for the infinite well potential and the radial symmetric ground state solution are presented. It is shown, that the behaviour of these functions may be reproduced with a ordinary Schroeodinger equation with an additional potential, which is of the form V ~ x for $α<1$, corresponding to the confinement potential, introduced phenomenologically to the standard models for non relativ…
We propose integrable discretizations of derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equations such as the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation by constructing Lax pairs. The discrete DNLS systems admit the reduction of complex conjugation between two dependent variables and possess bi-Hamiltonian structure. Through transformations of variables and reductions, we obtain novel integrable discretizations of the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS), modified KdV (mKdV), mixed NLS, matrix NLS, matrix KdV, matrix mKdV, coupled NLS, coupled Hirota, coupled Sasa-Sats…
We prove that a single-jump quantum stochastic unitary evolution is equivalent to a Dirac boundary value problem on the half line in one extra dimension. It is shown that this exactly solvable model can be obtained from a Schroedinger boundary value problem for a positive relativistic Hamiltonian in the half-line as the inductive ultrarelativistic limit, correspondent to the input flow of Dirac particles with asymptotically infinite momenta. Thus the problem of stochastic approximation is reduced to the to the quantum-mechanical boundary value problem in the extra dimension. The question of mi…
A theory of transformation is presented for the diagonalization of a Hamiltonian that is quadratic in creation and annihilation operators or in coordinates and momenta. It is the systemization and theorization of Dirac and Bogoliubov-Valatin transformations, and thus provides us an operational procedure to answer, in a direct manner, the questions as to whether a quadratic Hamiltonian is diagonalizable, whether the diagonalization is unique, and how the transformation can be constructed if the diagonalization exists. The underlying idea is to consider the dynamic matrix. Each quadratic Hamilto…
Time dependent quadratic Hamiltonians are well known as well in classical mechanics and in quantum mechanics. In particular for them the correspondance between classical and quantum mechanics is exact. But explicit formulas are non trivial (like the Mehler formula). Moreover, a good knowlege of quadratic Hamiltonians is very useful in the study of more general quantum Hamiltonians and associated Schrödinger equations in the semiclassical regime. Our goal here is to give our own presentation of this important subject. We put emphasis on computations with Gaussian coherent states. Our main motiv…
We consider a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equation in three space dimensions with an attractive potential. The nonlinearity is local but rather general encompassing for the first time both subcritical and supercritical (in $L^2$) nonlinearities. We study the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear bound states, i.e. periodic in time localized in space solutions. Our result shows that all solutions with small initial data, converge to a nonlinear bound state. Therefore, the nonlinear bound states are asymptotically stable. The proof hinges on dispersive estimates that we obtain for the time d…
The Cauchy problem for the Gross--Pitaevsky equation with quadratic nonlocal nonlinearity is reduced to a similar problem for the correspondent linear equation. The relation between symmetry operators of the linear and nonlinear Gross--Pitaevsky equations is considered.
Different constructions for Hilbert state space for constrained systems are investigated. Properties of Gaussian states analogous to quantum mechanical Gaussian wave functions are studied. Their evolution for quadratic Hamiltonian case are discussed. A notion of Maslov complex germ is introduced for systems with linear constraints.
The theory of (classical and) quantum mechanical microscopic irreversibility developed by B. Misra, I. Prigogine and M. Courbage (MPC) and various other contributors is based on the central notion of a Lyapounov variable - i.e., a dynamical variable whose value varies monotonically as time increases. Incompatibility between certain assumed properties of a Lyapounov variable and semiboundedness of the spectrum of the Hamiltonian generating the quantum dynamics led MPC to formulate their theory in Liouville space. In the present paper it is proved, in a constructive way, that a Lyapounov variabl…
We develop a Lie algebraic approach to systematically calculate the evolution operator of the generalized two-dimensional quadratic Hamiltonian with time-dependent coefficients. Although the development of the Lie algebraic approach presented here is mainly motivated by the two-dimensional quadratic Hamiltonian, it may be applied to investigate the evolution operators of any Hamiltonian having a dynamical algebra with a large number of elements. We illustrate the method by finding the propagator and the Heisenberg picture position and momentum operators for a two-dimensional charge subject to …
We discuss self-adjoint operators given formally by expressions quadratic in bosonic creation and annihilation operators. We give conditions when they can be defined as self-adjoint operators, possibly after an infinite renormalization. We also discuss explicit formulas for their infimum. Our main motivation comes from Local Quantum Field Theory, which furnishes interesting examples of bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians that require an infinite renormalization.
Methods from scattering theory are introduced to analyze random Schroedinger operators in one dimension by applying a volume cutoff to the potential. The key ingredient is the Lifshitz-Krein spectral shift function, which is related to the scattering phase by the theorem of Birman and Krein. The spectral shift density is defined as the "thermodynamic limit" of the spectral shift function per unit length of the interaction region. This density is shown to be equal to the difference of the densities of states for the free and the interacting Hamiltonians. Based on this construction, we give a ne…
We consider two-dimensional Schroedinger equations with honeycomb potentials and slow time-periodic forcing of the form: $$iψ_t (t,x) = H^\varepsilon(t)ψ=\left(H^0+2i\varepsilon A (\varepsilon t) \cdot \nabla \right)ψ,\quad H^0=-Δ+V (x) .$$ The unforced Hamiltonian, $H^0$, is known to generically have Dirac (conical) points in its band spectrum. The evolution under $H^\varepsilon(t)$ of {\it band limited Dirac wave-packets} (spectrally localized near the Dirac point) is well-approximated on large time scales ($t\lesssim \varepsilon^{-2+}$) by an effective time-periodic Dirac equation with a ga…
We investigate the relation between broken time-reversal symmetry and localization of the electronic states, in the explicitly tractable case of the Landau model. We first review, for the reader's convenience, the symmetries of the Landau Hamiltonian and the relation of the latter with the Segal-Bargmann representation of Quantum Mechanics. We then study the localization properties of the Landau eigenstates by applying an abstract version of the Balian-Low Theorem to the operators corresponding to the coordinates of the centre of the cyclotron orbit in the classical theory. Our proof of the Ba…
We introduce an antisymplectic Dirac operator and antisymplectic gamma matrices. We explore similarities between, on one hand, the Schroedinger-Lichnerowicz formula for spinor bundles in Riemannian spin geometry, which contains a zeroth-order term proportional to the Levi-Civita scalar curvature, and, on the other hand, the nilpotent, Grassmann-odd, second-order Δoperator in antisymplectic geometry, which in general has a zeroth-order term proportional to the odd scalar curvature of an arbitrary antisymplectic and torsionfree connection that is compatible with the measure density. Finally, we …
In this work we study the persistence in time of superoscillations for the Schrödinger equation with quadratic time-dependent Hamiltonians. We have solved explicitly the Cauchy initial value problem with three different kind of oscillatory initial data. In order to prove the persistence of superoscillations we have defined explicitly an operator in terms of solutions of a Riccati system associated with the variable coefficients of the Hamiltonian. The operator is defined on a space of entire functions. Particular examples include Caldirola-Kanai and degenerate parametric harmonic oscillator Ha…
We study the Schroedinger operator with a constant magnetic field in the exterior of a compact domain in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, $d\geq 1$. The spectrum of this operator consists of clusters of eigenvalues around the Landau levels. We give asymptotic formulas for the rate of accumulation of eigenvalues in these clusters. When the compact is a Reinhart domain we are able to show a more precise asymptotic formula.
In this paper we propose a modified Lie-type spectral splitting approximation where the external potential is of quadratic type. It is proved that we can approximate the solution to a one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation by solving the linear problem and treating the nonlinear term separately, with a rigorous estimate of the remainder term. Furthermore, we show by means of numerical experiments that such a modified approximation is more efficient than the standard one.
