We consider a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equation in three space dimensions with an attractive potential. The nonlinearity is local but rather general encompassing for the first time both subcritical and supercritical (in $L^2$) nonlinearities. We study the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear bound states, i.e. periodic in time localized in space solutions. Our result shows that all solutions with small initial data, converge to a nonlinear bound state. Therefore, the nonlinear bound states are asymptotically stable. The proof hinges on dispersive estimates that we obtain for the time dependent, Hamiltonian, linearized dynamics around a careful chosen one parameter family of bound states that "shadows" the nonlinear evolution of the system. Due to the generality of the methods we develop we expect them to extend to the case of perturbations of large bound states and to other nonlinear dispersive wave type equations.
We consider the Schroedinger equation with a subcritical focusing power nonlinearity on a noncompact metric graph, and prove that for every finite edge there exists a threshold value of the mass, beyond which there exists a positive bound state achieving its maximum on that edge only. This bound state is characterized as a minimizer of the energy functional associated to the NLS equation, with an additional constraint (besides the mass prescription): this requires particular care in proving that the minimizer satisfies the Euler--Lagrange equation. As a consequence, for a sufficiently large ma…
We study the long-time behavior of solutions to nonlinear Schroedinger equations with some critical rough potential of inverse square type. The new ingredients are the interaction Morawetz-type inequalities and Sobolev norm property associated with the Lapalacian with inverse square potential. We use such properties to obtain the scattering theory for the defocusing energy-subcritical nonlinear Schroedinger equation with inverse square potential in energy space.
We establish a dispersive estimate (with a decay of 1/t), valid for all times, for the Schroedinger evolution on a non-compact 2-dimensional manifold with a trapped geodesic.
We study the energy-critical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an energy- subcritical perturbation. We show the existence of a ground state in the four or higher dimensions. Moreover, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for a solution to scatter, in the spirit of Kenig-Merle [16].
Sharp spectral asymptotics for multidimensional Schroedinger operators with the strong magnetic field are derived under rather weak smoothness conditions. I assume that magnetic intensity matrix has constant defect r>0 at each point. In comparison with version 1 of 5.5 year ago this version contains more results (we also study some degenerations), improvements and some minor corrections.
A system of two coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations is treated. In addition, a linear coupling which models an external driven field described by the Rabi frequency is considered. Asymptotics for large Rabi frequency are carried out. Convergence in the appropriate Strichartz space is proven. As a consequence, the global existence of the limiting system gives a criterion for the long time behavior of the original system.
We consider 2- and 3-dimensional Schrödinger or generalized Schrödinger-Pauli operators with the non-degenerating magnetic field in the open domain under certain non-degeneracy assumptions we derive pointwise spectral asymptotics. We also consider asymptotics of some related expressions (see below). For all asymptotics loops rather than periodic trajectories play important role.
We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two space dimensions with an attractive potential. We study the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear bound states, i.e. periodic in time localized in space solutions. Our result shows that all solutions with small, localized in space initial data, converge to the set of bound states. Therefore, the center manifold in this problem is a global attractor. The proof hinges on dispersive estimates that we obtain for the non-autonomous, non-Hamiltonian, linearized dynamics around the bound states.
We consider a singular Schrödinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ written formally as $-Δ- βδ(x-γ)$ where $γ$ is a $C^4$ smooth open arc in $\mathbb{R}^2$ of length $L$ with regular ends. It is shown that the $j$th negative eigenvalue of this operator behaves in the strong-coupling limit, $β\to +\infty$, asymptotically as \[ E_j(β)=-\frac{β^2}{4} +μ_j +\mathcal{O}\Big(\dfrac{\logβ}β\Big), \] where $μ_j$ is the $j$th Dirichlet eigenvalue of the operator \[ -\frac{d^2}{ds^2} -\frac{κ(s)^2}{4}\, \] on $L^2(0,L)$ with $κ(s)$ being the signed curvature of $γ$ at the point $s\in(0,L)$.
In this article we obtain eigenvalue asymptotics for 2D and 3D-Schroedinger, Schroedinger-Pauli and Dirac operators in the situations in which the role of the magnetic field is important. These operators are essentially different and there is a significant difference between 2D and 3D-operators.
Sharp spectral asymptotics for 2- and 3-dimensional Schroedinger operators with strong magnetic field are derived under rather weak smoothness conditions. In comparison with version 1 of 2005 new results are added and minor errors corrected.
We give a short description of the proof of asymptotic-completeness for NLS-type equations, including time dependent potential terms, with radial data in three dimensions. We also show how the method applies for the two-body Quantum Scattering case.
I derive sharp semiclassical asymptotics of \int |e_h(x,y,0)|^2ω(x,y)dxdy where e_h(x,y,τ) is the Schwartz kernel of the spectral projector of Magnetic Schroedinger operator and ω(x,y) is singular as x=y. I also consider asymptotics of more general expressions.
Singularly perturbed vector nonlinear Schroedinger equations (PVNLS) are investigated. Emphasis is placed upon the relation with their restriction: The singularly perturbed scalar nonlinear Schroedinger equation (PNLS) studied earlier by Li. It turns out that the persistent homoclinic orbit for the PNLS is the only one for the PVNLS, asymptotic to the same saddle.
We prove in this paper the stability and asymptotic stability in H^1 of a decoupled sum of N solitons for the subcritical generalized KdV equations $u_t+(u_{xx}+u^p)_x=0$ (1<p<5). The proof of the stability result is based on energy arguments and monotonicity of local L^2 norm. Note that the result is new even for p=2 (the KdV equation). The asymptotic stability result then follows directly from a rigidity theorem in [15].
In this paper, we prove the asymptotic stability of solitary waves to 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the subcritical case with symmetry and spectrum assumptions. One of the main ideas is to use the vector fields method developed by Cuccagna, Georgiev, Visciglia to overcome the weak decay with respect to $t$ of the linearized equation caused by the one dimension setting and the weak nonlinearity caused by the subcritical growth of the nonlinearity term. Meanwhile, we apply the polynomial growth of the high Sobolev norms of solutions to 1D Schrödinger equations obtained by Staffilani to c…
The main result of the paper is a global asymptotic stability result for solutions to the Lifschitz-Slyozov-Wagner (LSW) system of equations. This extends some local asymptotic stability results of Niethammer-Velázquez (2006). The method of proof is along similar lines to the one used in a previous paper of the authors. This previous paper proves global asymptotic stability for a class of infinite dimensional dynamical systems for which no Lyapounov function is (apparently) available.
We consider 2-dimensional Schroedinger operator with the non-degenerating magnetic field in the domain with the boundary and under certain non-degeneracy assumptions we derive spectral asymptotics with the remainder estimate better than $O(h^{-1})$, up to $O(μ^{-1}h^{-1})$ and the principal part $\asymp h^{-2}$ where $h\ll 1$ is Planck constant and $μ\gg 1$ is the intensity of the magnetic field; $μh \le 1$. We also consider generalized Schrödinger-Pauli operator in the same framework albeit with $μh\ge 1$ and derive spectral asymptotics with the remainder estimate up to O(1) and with the prin…
We consider the Landau-Lifshitz equations of ferromagnetism (including the harmonic map heat-flow and Schroedinger flow as special cases) for degree m equivariant maps from R^2 to S^2. If m \geq 3, we prove that near-minimal energy solutions converge to a harmonic map as t goes to infinity (asymptotic stability), extending previous work down to degree m = 3. Due to slow spatial decay of the harmonic map components, a new approach is needed for m=3, involving (among other tools) a "normal form" for the parameter dynamics, and the 2D radial double-endpoint Strichartz estimate for Schroedinger op…
The Fourier transforms of the products of two respectively three solutions of the free Schroedinger equation in one space dimension are estimated in mixed and, in the first case weighted, L^p - norms. Inserted into an appropriate variant of the Fourier restriction norm method, these estimates serve to prove local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation with data u_0 in the function space ^L^r:=^H^r_0, where for s \in R the spaces ^H^r_s are defined by the norms ||u_0||_{^H^r_s}:=||^u_0||_{L^r'_ξ}, 1/r + 1/r'=1. Similar arguments, combined with a…
We analyze the rate of convergence towards self-similarity for the subcritical Keller-Segel system in the radially symmetric two-dimensional case and in the corresponding one-dimensional case for logarithmic interaction. We measure convergence in Wasserstein distance. The rate of convergence towards self-similarity does not degenerate as we approach the critical case. As a byproduct, we obtain a proof of the logarithmic Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality in the one dimensional and radially symmetric two dimensional case based on optimal transport arguments. In addition we prove that the one-d…
I consider 4-dimensional Schrödinger operator with the generic non-degenerating magnetic field and for a generic potential I derive spectral asymptotics with the remainder estimate $O(μ^{-1}h^{-3})$ and the principal part $\asymp h^{-4}$ where $h\ll 1$ is Planck constant and $μ\gg 1$ is the intensity of the magnetic field. For general potentials remainder estimate $O(μ^{-1}h^{-3}+μ^2h^{-2})$ is achieved.
With derive sharp spectral asymptotics (with the remainder estimate $O(μ^{-1}h^{1-d}+μ^{\frac{d} {2}-1}h^{1-\frac{d}{2}})$ for $d$-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a strong magnetic field; here $h$ and $μ$ are Plank and binding constants respectively and magnetic intensity matrix has full rank at each point. In comparison with version 1 of 4.5 year ago this version contains more results (we also study some degenerations), improvements and some minor corrections.
We study the time-asymptotic behavior of solutions of the Schrödinger equation with nonlinear dissipation \begin{equation*} \partial _t u = i Δu + λ|u|^αu \end{equation*} in ${\mathbb R}^N $, $N\geq1$, where $λ\in {\mathbb C}$, $\Re λ<0$ and $0<α<\frac2N$. We give a precise description of the behavior of the solutions (including decay rates in $L^2$ and $L^\infty $, and asymptotic profile), for a class of arbitrarily large initial data, under the additional assumption that $α$ is sufficiently close to $\frac2N$.
We consider 2-dimensional Schrödinger operator with the non-degenerating magnetic field and we discuss spectral asymptotics with the remainder estimate $o(μ^{-1}h^{-1})$ or better. We also consider 3-dimensional Schrödinger operator with the non-degenerating magnetic field and we discuss spectral asymptotics with the remainder estimate $o(μ^{-1}h^{-1})$ or better. We also consider generalized Schrödinger-Pauli operator in the same framework albeit with $μh\ge 1$ and derive spectral asymptotics with the remainder estimate up to $O(h^{-1}|\log h|)$ and with the principal part $\asymp μh^{-2}$.
We shall study the following initial value problem: \begin{equation}{\bf i}\partial_t u - Δu + V(x) u=0, \hbox{} (t, x) \in {\mathbf R} \times {\mathbf R}^n, \end{equation} $$u(0)=f,$$ where $V(x)$ is a real short--range potential, whose radial derivative satisfies some supplementary assumptions. More precisely we shall present a family of identities satisfied by the solutions to the previous Cauchy problem. As a by--product of these identities we deduce some uniqueness results and a lower bound for the so called local smoothing which becomes an identity in a precise asymptotic sense.
Resonances which result from perturbation of embedded eigenvalues are studied by time dependent methods. A general theory is developed, with new and weaker conditions, allowing for perturbations of threshold eigenvalues and relaxed Fermi Golden rule. The exponential decay rate of resonances is addressed; its uniqueness in the time dependent picture is shown is certain cases. The relation to the existence of meromorphic continuation of the properly weighted Green's function to time dependent resonance is further elucidated, by giving an equivalent time dependent asymptotic expansion of the solu…

We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the defocusing mass-subcritical Hartree NLS $iu_t + Δu = F(u) = (|x|^{-γ}*|u|^2)u$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 2$, $\frac{4}{3} < γ< 2$. We show that the scattering problem associated to this equation is analytically well-posed in the weighted spaces $Σ= H^1\cap\mathcal{F}H^1$ and $\mathcal{F}H^1$. Furthermore, we show that the same problem fails to be analytically well-posed for data in $L^2$. This constitutes an infinite loss of regularity between the scattering problems in weighted spaces and in $L^2$. This further develops an earlier investiga…
We classify the local asymptotic behavior of positive singular solutions to a class of subcritical sixth order equations on the punctured ball. Initially, using a version of the integral moving spheres technique, we prove that solutions are asymptotically radially symmetric solutions with respect to the origin. We divide our approach into some cases concerning the growth of nonlinearity. In general, we use an Emden--Fowler change of variables to translate our problem to a cylinder. In the lower critical regime, this is not enough, thus, we need to introduce a new notion of change of variables.…
In this paper we consider a subcritical model that involves nonlocal diffusion and a classical convective term. In spite of the nonlocal diffusion, we obtain an Oleinik type estimate similar to the case when the diffusion is local. First we prove that the entropy solution can be obtained by adding a small viscous term $μu_{xx}$ and letting $μ\to 0$. Then, by using uniform Oleinik estimates for the viscous approximation we are able to prove the well-posedness of the entropy solutions with $L^1$-initial data. Using a scaling argument and hyperbolic estimates given by Oleinik's inequality, we obt…
We obtain an $L^4$ space-time Strichartz inequality for any smooth three-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which is asymptotically conic at infinity and non-trapping, where $u$ is a solution to the Schrödinger equation $iu_t + {1/2} Δ_M u = 0$. The exponent $H^{1/4}(M)$ is sharp, by scaling considerations. In particular our result covers asymptotically flat non-trapping manifolds. Our argument is based on the interaction Morawetz inequality introduced by Colliander et al., interpreted here as a positive commutator inequality for the tensor product $U(t,z',z'') := u(t,z') u(t,z'')$ of the…
Asymptotics of solutions to Schroedinger equations with singular dipole-type potentials is investigated. We evaluate the exact behavior near the singularity of solutions to elliptic equations with potentials which are purely angular multiples of radial inverse-square functions. Both the linear and the semilinear (critical and subcritical) cases are considered.
We study the asymptotic behavior in time of solutions to the one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a subcritical dissipative nonlinearity $λ|u|^αu$, where $0<α<2$, and $λ$ is a complex constant satisfying $\text{Im} λ>\frac{α|\text{Re} λ|}{2\sqrt{ α+1}}$. For arbitrary large initial data, we present the uniform time decay estimates when $4/3<α<2$, and the large time asymptotics of the solution when $\frac{7+\sqrt{145}}{12}<α<2$. The proof is based on the vector fields method and a semiclassical analysis method.
We prove for a class of nonlinear Schrödinger systems (NLS) having two nonlinear bound states that the (generic) large time behavior is characterized by decay of the excited state, asymptotic approach to the nonlinear ground state and dispersive radiation. Our analysis elucidates the mechanism through which initial conditions which are very near the excited state branch evolve into a (nonlinear) ground state, a phenomenon known as {\it ground state selection}. Key steps in the analysis are the introduction of a particular linearization and the derivation of a normal form which reflects the dyn…
We consider a fractional Schrödinger-Poisson system with a general nonlinearity in subcritical and critical case. The Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition is not required. By using a perturbation approach, we prove the existence of positive solutions. Moreover, we study the asymptotics of solutions for a vanishing parameter.
The Schroedinger equation with the nonlinearity concentrated at a single point proves to be an interesting and important model for the analysis of long-time behavior of solutions, such as the asymptotic stability of solitary waves and properties of weak global attractors. In this note, we prove global well-posedness of this system in the energy space $H\sp 1$.
Asymptotics of solutions to Schroedinger equations with singular magnetic and electric potentials is investigated. By using a Almgren type monotonicity formula, separation of variables, and an iterative Brezis-Kato type procedure, we describe the exact behavior near the singularity of solutions to linear and semilinear (critical and subcritical) elliptic equations with an inverse square electric potential and a singular magnetic potential with a homogeneity of order -1.
In this paper, we study the discrete cubic nonlinear Schroedinger lattice under Hamiltonian perturbations. First we develop a complete isospectral theory relevant to the hyperbolic structures of the lattice without perturbations. In particular, Backlund-Darboux transformations are utilized to generate heteroclinic orbits and Melnikov vectors. Then we give coordinate-expressions for persistent invariant manifolds and Fenichel fibers for the perturbed lattice. Finally based upon the above machinery, existence of codimension 2 transversal homoclinic tubes is established through a Melnikov type ca…
Consider the focusing cubic semilinear Schroedinger equation in R^3 i \partial_t ψ+ Δψ+ | ψ|^2 ψ= 0. It admits an eight-dimensional manifold of special solutions called ground state solitons. We exhibit a codimension-one critical real-analytic manifold N of asymptotically stable solutions in a neighborhood of the soliton manifold. We then show that N is centre-stable, in the dynamical systems sense of Bates-Jones, and globally-in-time invariant. Solutions in N are asymptotically stable and separate into two asymptotically free parts that decouple in the limit --- a soliton and radiation. Conve…

We establish asymptotic bounds on the L^p norms of spectrally localized functions in the case of two-dimensional Dirichlet forms with coefficients of Lipschitz regularity. These bounds are new for the range p>6. A key step in the proof is bounding the rate at which energy spreads for solutions to hyperbolic equations with Lipschitz coefficients.
We consider examples of discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equations in Z admitting ground states which are orbitally but not asymptotically stable in l ^2(Z). The ground states contain internal modes which decouple from the continuous modes. The absence of leaking of energy from discrete to continues modes leads to an almost conservation and perpetual oscillation of the discrete modes. This is quite different from what is known for nonlinear Schroedinger equations in eucliedean spaces. We do not investigate connections with work on quasi periodic solutions as in M.Johansson & S.Aubry and of Bamb…
We study qualitative properties of solutions to the fractional Lane-Emden-Fowler equations with slightly subcritical exponents where the associated fractional Laplacian is defined in terms of either the spectra of Dirichlet Laplacian or the integral representation. As a consequence, we classify the asymptotic behavior of all finite energy solutions. Our method also provides a simple and unified approach to deal with the classical (local) Lane-Emden-Fowler equation for any dimension greater than 2.
We prove some qualitative properties for singular solutions to a class of strongly coupled system involving a Gross--Pitaevskii-type nonlinearity. Our main theorems are vectorial fourth order counterparts of the classical results of [J. Serrin, Acta Math. (1964)], [P.-L. Lions, J. Differential Equations (1980)], [P. Aviles, Comm. Math. Phys. (1987)], and [B. Gidas and J. Spruck, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (1981)]. On the technical level, we use the moving sphere method to classify the limit blow-up solutions to our system. Besides, applying asymptotic analysis techniques, we show that these soluti…
Consider a regular $d$-dimensional metric tree $Γ$ with root $o$. Define the Schroedinger operator $-Δ- V$, where $V$ is a non-negative, symmetric potential, on $Γ$, with Neumann boundary conditions at $o$. Provided that $V$ decays like $x^{-γ}$ at infinity, where $1 < γ\leq d \leq 2, γ\neq 2$, we will determine the weak coupling behavior of the bottom of the spectrum of $-Δ- V$. In other words, we will describe the asymptotical behavior of $\inf σ(-Δ- αV)$ as $α\to 0+$
In this work we consider the energy subcritical 3D wave equation $\partial_t^2 u - Δu = \pm |u|^{p-1} u$ and discuss its (weakly) non-radiative solutions, i.e. the solutions defined in an exterior region $\{(x,t): |x|>|t|+R\}$ with $R\geq 0$ satisfying \[ \lim_{t\rightarrow \pm\infty} \int_{|x|>|t|+R} \left(|\nabla u(x,t)|^2 + |u_t(x,t)|^2\right) dx = 0. \] It has been known that any radial weakly non-radiative solution to the linear wave equation is a multiple of $1/|x|$. In addition, any radial weakly non-radiative solutions $u$ to the energy critical wave equation must possess a similar asy…
We consider in the whole plane the Hamiltonian coupling of semilinear Schroedinger equations which have critical growth in the sense of Moser. We prove that the (nonempty) set S of ground state solutions is compact up to translations. Moreover, ground states are uniformly bounded and uniformly decaying at infinity. Then we prove that actually the ground state is positive and radially symmetric. We apply those results to prove the existence of semiclassical ground states solutions to the singularly perturbed system when the external potential stays bounded away from zero. Namely, as the adimens…
We consider a singularly perturbed Dirichlet spectral problem for an elliptic operator of second order. The coefficients of the operator are assumed to be locally periodic and oscillating in the scale $\varepsilon$. We describe the leading terms of the asymptotics of the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions to the problem, as the parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, under structural assumptions on the potential. More precisely, we assume that the local average of the potential has a unique global minimum point in the interior of the domain and its Hessian is non-degenerate at this point.
In the 2-d setting, given an $H^1$ solution $v(t)$ to the linear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_t v +Δv =0$, we prove the existence (but not uniqueness) of an $H^1$ solution $u(t)$ to the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation $i\partial_t u + Δu -|u|^{p-1}u=0$ for nonlinear powers $2<p<3$ and the existence of an $H^1$ solution $u(t)$ to the defocusing Hartree equation $i\partial_t u + Δu -(|x|^{-γ}\star|u|^{2})u=0$ for interaction powers $1<γ<2$, such that $\|u(t)-v(t)\|_{H^1} \to 0$ as $t\to +\infty$. This is a partial result toward the existence of well-defined continuous wave ope…
We study the scattering problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_t u + Δu = |u|^p u$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 1$, with a mass-subcritical nonlinearity above the Strauss exponent. For this equation, it is known that asymptotic completeness in $L^2$ with initial data in $Σ$ holds and the wave operator is well-defined on $Σ$. We show that there exists $0<β<p$ such that the wave operator and the data-to-scattering-state map do not admit extensions to maps $L^2\to L^2$ of class $C^{1+β}$ near the origin. This constitutes a mild form of ill-posedness for the scattering problem in t…
