We prove in this paper the stability and asymptotic stability in H^1 of a decoupled sum of N solitons for the subcritical generalized KdV equations $u_t+(u_{xx}+u^p)_x=0$ (1<p<5). The proof of the stability result is based on energy arguments and monotonicity of local L^2 norm. Note that the result is new even for p=2 (the KdV equation). The asymptotic stability result then follows directly from a rigidity theorem in [15].
For the L^2 subcritical and critical (gKdV) equations, Martel proved the existence and uniqueness of multi-solitons. Recall that for any N given solitons, we call multi-soliton a solution of (gKdV) which behaves as the sum of these N solitons asymptotically as time goes to infinity. More recently, for the L^2 supercritical case, Cote, Martel and Merle proved the existence of at least one multi-soliton. In the present paper, as suggested by a previous work concerning the one soliton case, we first construct an N-parameter family of multi-solitons for the supercritical (gKdV) equation, for N arb…
Multi-soliton solutions, i.e. solutions behaving as the sum of N given solitons as $t\to +\infty$, were constructed in previous works for the L2 critical and subcritical (NLS) and (gKdV) equations. In this paper, we extend the construction of multi-soliton solutions to the L2 supercritical case both for (gKdV) and (NLS) equations, using a topological argument to control the direction of instability.
We continue our study of the collision of two solitons for the subcritical generalized KdV equations. In a previous paper, mainly devoted to the case of the quartic gKdV equation, we have introduced a new framework to understand the collision of two solitons in the case where one soliton is small with respect to the other. In this paper, we consider the case of a general nonlinearity $f(u)$ for which the two solitons are nonlinearly stable. We prove that in this situation the two solitons survive and we describe the collision at the main orders.
We describe an approach to construct multi-soliton asymptotic solutions for non-integrable equations. The general idea is realized in the case of three waves and for the KdV-type equation with nonlinearity $u^4$. A brief review of asymptotic methods as well as results of numerical simulation are included.
This paper presents a complete description of the interaction of two solitons with nearly equal speeds for the quartic (gKdV) equation. By constructing an approximate solution of the problem, we prove that at the main order, the two solitons are preserved by the interaction and that for all time they are separated by a large distance, as in the case of the integrable KdV equation in this regime. However, unlike in the integrable case, we prove that the collision is not perfectly elastic.
This paper concerns the problem of collision of two solitons for the quartic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. We introduce a new framework to describe the collision in the special case where one soliton is small with respect to the other. We prove that the two soliton survive the collision, we describe the collision phenomenon (computation of the first order of the resulting shifts on the solitons). Moreover, we prove that in this situation, there does not exist pure two-soliton solutions.
We construct the 'threshold manifold' near the soliton for the mass critical gKdV equation, completing results obtained in arXiv:1204.4625 and arXiv:1204.4624. In a neighborhood of the soliton, this C1 manifold of codimension one separates solutions blowing up in finite time and solutions in the 'exit regime'. On the manifold, solutions are global in time and converge locally to a soliton. In particular, the soliton behavior is strongly unstable by blowup.
In this article, we prove existence of a non-scattering solution, which is minimal in some sense, to the mass-subcritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equation in the scale critical ^L^r space. We construct this solution by a concentration compactness argument. Then, key ingredients are a linear profile decomposition result adopted to ^L^r-framework and approximation of solutions to the gKdV equation which involves rapid linear oscillation by means of solutions to the nonlinear Schr"odinger equation.
We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation in the supercritical case, and we are interested in solutions which converge to a soliton in large time in H^1. In the subcritical case, such solutions are forced to be exactly solitons by variational characterization, but no such result exists in the supercritical case. In this paper, we first construct a "special solution" in this case by a compactness argument, i.e. a solution which converges to a soliton without being a soliton. Secondly, using a description of the spectrum of the linearized operator around a soliton due to Pego and We…
We consider the quartic (nonintegrable) (gKdV) equation. Let u(t) be an outgoing 2-soliton of the equation, i.e. a solution behaving exactly as the sum of two solitons (of speeds c1 and c2) for large positive time. In arXiv:0910.3204, for nearly equal solitons, the solution u(t) is computed up to some order of epsilon=1-c2/c1, everywhere in time and space. In particular, it is deduced that u(t) is not a multi-soliton for large negative time, proving the nonexistence of pure multi-soliton in this context. In the present paper, we prove the same result for an explicit range of speeds: 3/4 c1< c2…
In this work we continue the description of soliton-like solutions of some slowly varying, subcritical gKdV equations. In this opportunity we describe, almost completely, the allowed behaviors: either the soliton is refracted, or it is reflected by the potential, depending on its initial energy. This last result describes a new type of soliton-like solution for gKdV equations, also present in the NLS case. Moreover, we prove that the solution is not pure at infinity, unlike the standard gKdV soliton.
We fully revisit the near soliton dynamics for the mass critical (gKdV) equation. In Part I, for a class of initial data close to the soliton, we prove that only three scenario can occur: (BLOW UP) the solution blows up in finite time $T$ in a universal regime with speed $1/(T-t)$; (SOLITON) the solution is global and converges to a soliton in large time; (EXIT) the solution leaves any small neighborhood of the modulated family of solitons in the scale invariant $L^2$ norm. Regimes (BLOW UP) and (EXIT) are proved to be stable. We also show in this class that any nonpositive energy initial data…
We consider the following class of equations of (gKdV) type $$\partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + |u|^{p-1}u) = 0, \quad p\mbox{ integer},\quad t,x \in \mathbb{R}$$ with mass sub-critical ($2< p<5$) and mass super-critical nonlinearities ($p> 5$). We prove the existence of 2-solitary wave solutions with logarithmic relative distance, i.e. solutions $u(t)$ satisfying \[\left\|u(t)- \bigg( Q (\cdot - t - \log (ct)) + σQ (\cdot - t + \log (ct))\bigg)\right\|_{H^1}\to 0 \ \ \mbox{as} \ \ t\to +\infty,\] where $c=c(p)> 0$ is a fixed constant, $σ= -1$ in sub-critical cases and $σ= 1$ in supe…
We construct self similar finite energy solutions to the slightly super-critical generalized KdV equation. These self similar solutions bifurcate as a function of the exponent $p$ from the soliton at the $L^2$ critical exponent.
In this paper we describe the inelastic character of solitons of some slowly varying gKdV equations. We give precise lower bounds, in the energy space, of the defect induced by the potential on the solution as time goes to infinite. For the proof, we consider suitable Lyapunov functionals that propagate the defect along the dynamics in a non trivial fashion, in the spirit of the recent breakthroughs made by Martel and Merle in the case of the two soliton collision for non integrable gKdV equations. In addition, we also consider a special, degenerate case, where the defect is formally of second…
We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation \partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + f(u))=0, \quad (t,x)\in [0,T)\times \mathbb{R}, (1) with general $C^3$ nonlinearity $f$. Under an explicit condition on $f$ and $c>0$, there exists a solution in the energy space $H^1$ of (1) of the type $u(t,x)=Q_c(x-x_0-ct)$, called soliton. In this paper, under general assumptions on $f$ and $Q_c$, we prove that the family of soliton solutions around $Q_c$ is asymptotically stable in some local sense in $H^1$, i.e. if $u(t)$ is close to $Q_{c}$ (for all $t\geq 0$), then $u(t)$ locally converge…
We study the problem of 2-soliton collision for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations, completing some recent works of Y. Martel and F. Merle. We classify the nonlinearities for which collisions are elastic or inelastic. Our main result states that in the case of small solitons, with one soliton smaller than the other one, the unique nonlinearities allowing a perfectly elastic collision are precisely the integrable cases, namely the quadratic (KdV), cubic (mKdV) and Gardner nonlinearities.
We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $$ \partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + f(u))=0, \quad (t,x)\in [0,T)\times \mathbb{R}$$ with general $C^2$ nonlinearity $f$. Under an explicit condition on $f$ and $c>0$, there exists a solution in the energy space $H^1$ of the type $u(t,x)=Q_c(x-x_0-ct)$, called soliton. Stability theory for $Q_c$ is well-known. In previous works, we have proved that for $f(u)=u^p$, $p=2,3,4$, the family of solitons is asymptotically stable in some local sense in $H^1$, i.e. if $u(t)$ is close to $Q_{c}$ (for all $t\geq 0$), then $u(t,.+ρ(t))$ loc…
We consider a family of dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations (dgBO) which are critical with respect to the L2 norm and interpolate between the critical modified (BO) equation and the critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (gKdV). First, we prove local well-posedness in the energy space for these equations, extending results by Kenig, Ponce and Vega concerning the (gKdV) equations. Second, we address the blow up problem in the spirit of works of Martel and Merle on the critical (gKdV) equation, by studying rigidity properties of the (dgBO) flow in a neighborhood of solitons. W…

We consider the blow up problem in the energy space for the critical (gKdV) equation in the continuation of part I and part II. We know from part I that the unique and stable blow up rate for solutions close to the solitons with strong decay on the right is $1/t$. In this paper, we construct non-generic blow up regimes in the energy space by considering initial data with explicit slow decay on the right in space. We obtain finite time blow up solutions with speed $t^{-ν}$ where $ ν>11/13,$ as well as global in time growing up solutions with both exponential growth or power growth. These soluti…
We analyze the gKdV equation, a generalized version of Korteweg-de Vries with an arbitrary function $f(u)$. In general, for a function $f(u)$ the Lie algebra of symmetries of gKdV is the $2$-dimensional Lie algebra of translations of the plane $xt$. This implies the existence of plane wave solutions. Indeed, for some specific values of $f(u)$ the equation gKdV admits a Lie algebra of symmetries of dimension grater than $2$. We compute the similarity reductions corresponding to these exceptional symmetries. We prove that the gKdV equation has soliton-like solutions under some general assumption…
We consider the two dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, $u_t + \partial_{x_1}(Δu + u^p) = 0, (x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb{R}^2$. It is known that solitons are stable for nonlinearities $p < 3$ and unstable for $p > 3$, which was established by Anne de Bouard in [5] generalizing the arguments of Bona-Souganidis-Strauss in [1] for the gKdV equation. The $L^2$-critical case with $p=3$ has been open and in this paper we prove that solitons are unstable in the cubic ZK equation. This matches the situation with the critical gKdV eq…
We consider the problem of the soliton propagation, in a slowly varying medium, for a generalized Korteweg - de Vries equations (gKdV). We study the effects of inhomogeneities on the dynamics of a standard soliton. We prove that slowly varying media induce on the soliton solution large dispersive effects at large time. Moreover, unlike gKdV equations, we prove that there is no pure-soliton solution in this regime.
We consider solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations (gKdV) which are non dispersive in some sense (in the spirit of [18]) and which remain close to multi-solitons. We show that these solutions are necessarily pure multi-solitons. For the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) and the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) in particular, we obtain a characterization of multi-solitons and multi-breathers in terms of non-dispersion.

This paper is concerned with the interaction of two solitons of nearly equal speeds for the (BBM) equation. This work is an extension of the results obtained in arXiv:0910.3204 by the same authors, addressing the same question for the quartic (gKdV) equation. First, we prove that the two solitons are preserved by the interaction and that for all time they are separated by a large distance, as in the case of the integrable (KdV) equation in this regime. Second, we prove that the collision is not perfectly elastic, except in the integrable case (i.e. in the limiting case of the (KdV) equation).
In this paper, we prove the asymptotic stability of solitary waves to 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the subcritical case with symmetry and spectrum assumptions. One of the main ideas is to use the vector fields method developed by Cuccagna, Georgiev, Visciglia to overcome the weak decay with respect to $t$ of the linearized equation caused by the one dimension setting and the weak nonlinearity caused by the subcritical growth of the nonlinearity term. Meanwhile, we apply the polynomial growth of the high Sobolev norms of solutions to 1D Schrödinger equations obtained by Staffilani to c…
We prove the scattering for the defocusing generalized Benjamin-Ono equation in the energy space $H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\mathbb{R})$. We first establish the monotonicity formula that describes the unidirectional propagation. More precisely, it says that the center of energy moves faster than the center of mass. This type of monotonicity was first observed by Tao (DCDS 2007) in the defocusing gKdV equations. We use the monotonicity in the setting of compactness-contradiction argument to prove the large data scattering in the energy space $H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\mathbb{R})$. On the way, we extend critical l…
In this paper, we consider the $L^2$ critical gKdV equation with a saturated perturbation: $\partial_t u+(u_{xx}+u^5-γu|u|^{q-1})_x=0$, where $q>5$ and $0<γ\ll1$. For any initial data $u_0\in H^1$, the corresponding solution is always global and bounded in $H^1$. This equation has a family of solitons, and our goal is to classify the dynamics near soliton. Together with a suitable decay assumption, there are only three possibilities: (i) the solution converges asymptotically to a solitary wave, whose $H^1$ norm is of size $γ^{-2/(q-1)}$, as $γ\rightarrow0$; (ii) the solution is always in a sma…
For the focusing energy critical wave equation in 5D, we construct a solution showing the inelastic nature of the collision of any two solitons, except the special case of two solitons of same scaling and opposite signs. Beyond its own interest as one of the first rigorous studies of the collision of solitons for a non-integrable model, the case of the quartic gKdV equation being partially treated by the authors in previous works, this result can be seen as part of a wider program aiming at establishing the soliton resolution conjecture for the critical wave equation. This conjecture has alrea…
We prove global well-posedness of the subcritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (the mKdV and the gKdV with quartic power of nonlinearity) subject to an additive random perturbation. More precisely, we prove that if the driving noise is a cylindrical Wiener process on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and the covariance operator is Hilbert-Schmidt in an appropriate Sobolev space, then the solutions with $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ data are globally well-posed in $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. This extends results obtained by A. de Bouard and A. Debussche for the stochastic KdV equation.
In this paper we investigate the orbital stability of solitary waves to the (generalized) Kawahara equation (gKW) which is a fifth order dispersive equation. For some values of the power of the nonlinearity, we prove the orbital stability in the energy space H 2 (R) of two branches of even solitary waves of gKW by combining the well-known spectral method introduced by Benjamin [3] with continuity arguments. We construct the first family of even solitons by applying the implicit function theorem in the neighborhood of the explicit solitons of gKW found by Dey et al. [8]. The second family consi…
We construct 2-solitons of any speed of the focusing energy-critical nonlinear wave equation in dimension 5. The existence result also holds for the case of K-solitons, for any K >2, assuming that the speeds are collinear. The main difficulty of the construction is the strong interaction between the solitons due to the slow spatial decay of the single soliton. This is in contrast with previous constructions of multi-solitons for other nonlinear models (like generalized KdV and nonlinear Schrodinger equations in energy subcritical cases), where the interactions are exponentially small in time d…
For the L2 supercritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, we proved in a previous article the existence and uniqueness of an N-parameter family of N-solitons. Recall that, for any N given solitons, we call N-soliton a solution of the equation which behaves as the sum of these N solitons asymptotically as time goes to infinity. In the present paper, we also construct an N-parameter family of N-solitons for the supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation, in dimension 1 for the sake of simplicity. Nevertheless, we do not obtain any classification result; but recall that, even in subcriti…
In this paper we consider the existence of multi-soliton structures for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation (NLKG) in R^{1+d}. We prove that, independently of the unstable character of (NLKG) solitons, it is possible to construct a N-soliton family of solutions to (NLKG), of dimension 2N, globally well-defined in the energy space H^1 \times L^2 for all large positive times. The method of proof involves the generalization of previous works on supercritical NLS and gKdV equations by Martel, Merle and the first author to the wave case, where we replace the unstable mode associated to the linear N…
We study the dynamics of solitons as solutions to the perturbed KdV (pKdV) equation $\partial_t u = -\partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + 3u^2-bu)$, where $b(x,t) = b_0(hx,ht)$, $h\ll 1$ is a slowly varying, but not small, potential. We option an explicit description of the trajectory of the soliton parameters of scale and position on the dynamically relevant time scale $δh^{-1}\log h^{-1}$, together with an estimate on the error of size $h^{1/2}$. In addition to the Lyapunov analysis commonly applied to these problems, we use a local virial estimate due to Martel-Merle (2005). The results are support…
We consider a half-soliton stationary state of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the power nonlinearity on a star graph consisting of N edges and a single vertex. For the subcritical power nonlinearity, the half-soliton state is a degenerate critical point of the action functional under the mass constraint such that the second variation is nonnegative. By using normal forms, we prove that the degenerate critical point is a nonlinear saddle point, for which the small perturbations to the half-soliton state grow slowly in time resulting in the nonlinear instability of the half-soliton stat…
We consider soliton-like solutions of a variable coefficients, subcritical nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). In a previous result, we proved the existence of a pure, global-in-time, generalized soliton with prescribed asymptotic as t tends to -infinity. In addition, we described the corresponding dynamics for all time, up to a small error term. In this paper we prove that the soliton is never pure as t tends to infinity. Indeed, we give a precise sharp lower bound on the defect induced by the potential on the soliton. This result shows the existence of nontrivial dispersive effects acting …
Recent progress in the theory and computation for the Novikov-Veselov (NV) equation is reviewed with initial potentials decaying at infinity, focusing mainly on the zero-energy case. The inverse scattering method for the zero-energy NV equation is presented in the context of Manakov triples, treating initial data of conductivity type rigorously. Special closed-form solutions are presented, including multisolitons, ring solitons, and breathers. The computational inverse scattering method is used to study zero-energy exceptional points and the relationship between supercritical, critical, and su…
We consider the KP-I and gKP-I equations in $\mathbb{R}\times (\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z})$. We prove that the KdV soliton with subcritical speed $0<c<c^*$ is orbitally stable under the global KP-I flow constructed by Ionescu and Kenig \cite{IK}. For supercritical speeds $c>c^*$, in the spirit of the work by Duyckaerts and Merle \cite{DM}, we sharpen our previous instability result and construct a global solution which is different from the solitary wave and its translates and which converges to the solitary wave as time goes to infinity. This last result also holds for the gKP-I equation.
We present a detailed numerical study of solutions to the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in three spatial dimensions. The equation is a three-dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, though, not completely integrable. This equation is $L^2$-subcritical, and thus, solutions exist globally, for example, in the $H^1$ energy space. We first study stability of solitons with various perturbations in sizes and symmetry, and show asymptotic stability and formation of radiation, confirming the asymptotic stability result in \cite{FHRY2020} for a larger class of initial data. We then i…
We consider a system of coupled cubic Schrödinger equations in one space dimension \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} i \partial_t u + \partial_x^2 u +(|u|^2 + ω|v|^2) u =0\\ i \partial_t v + \partial_x^2 v+ (|v|^2 + ω|u|^2) v=0 \end{cases}\quad (t,x)\in {\bf R}\times{\bf R}, \end{equation*} in the non-integrable case $0 < ω< 1$. First, we justify the existence of a symmetric 2-solitary wave with logarithmic distance, more precisely a solution of the system satisfying \[ \lim_{t\to +\infty}\left\| \begin{pmatrix} u(t) \\ v(t)\end{pmatrix} - \begin{pmatrix} e^{it}Q (\cdot - \frac{1}{2} \log (Ωt) -…
We present a detailed numerical study of solutions to the (generalized) Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in two spatial dimensions with various power nonlinearities. In the $L^{2}$-subcritical case, numerical evidence is presented for the stability of solitons and the soliton resolution for generic initial data. In the $L^2$-critical and supercritical cases, solitons appear to be unstable against both dispersion and blow-up. It is conjectured that blow-up happens in finite time and that blow-up solutions have some resemblance of being self-similar, i.e., the blow-up core forms a rightward moving se…
In this paper, we study the global well-posedness and scattering theory for the defocusing fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (FNLS) $iu_t+Δ^2 u+|u|^pu=0$ in dimension $d\geq9$. We prove that if the solution $u$ is apriorily bounded in the critical Sobolev space, that is, $u\in L_t^\infty(I;\dot H^{s_c}_x(\R^d))$ with all $s_c:=\frac{d}2-\frac4p\geq1$ if $p$ is an even integer or $s_c\in[1,2+p)$ otherwise, then $u$ is global and scatters. The impetus to consider this problem stems from a series of recent works for the energy-supercritical and energy-subcritical nonlinear Schrödinger e…
In this paper, we prove that the small energy harmonic maps from $\Bbb H^2$ to $\Bbb H^2$ are asymptotically stable under the wave map equation in the subcritical perturbation class. This result may be seen as an example supporting the soliton resolution conjecture for geometric wave equations without equivariant assumptions on the initial data. In this paper, we construct Tao's caloric gauge in the case when nontrivial harmonic map occurs. With the "dynamic separation" the master equation of the heat tension field appears as a semilinear magnetic wave equation. By the endpoint and weighted St…
