The theory of (classical and) quantum mechanical microscopic irreversibility developed by B. Misra, I. Prigogine and M. Courbage (MPC) and various other contributors is based on the central notion of a Lyapounov variable - i.e., a dynamical variable whose value varies monotonically as time increases. Incompatibility between certain assumed properties of a Lyapounov variable and semiboundedness of the spectrum of the Hamiltonian generating the quantum dynamics led MPC to formulate their theory in Liouville space. In the present paper it is proved, in a constructive way, that a Lyapounov variable can be found within the standard Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics and, hence, the MPC assumptions are more restrictive than necessary for the construction of such a quantity. Moreover, as in the MPC theory, the existence of a Lyapounov variable implies the existence of a transformation mapping the original quantum mechanical problem to an equivalent irreversible representation. In addition, it is proved that in the irreversible representation there exists a natural time observable splitting the Hilbert space at each t>0 into past and future subspaces.
We propose a theory "a la Conley" for cone fields using a notion of relaxed orbits based on cone enlargements, in the spirit of space time geometry. We work in the setting of closed (or equivalently semi-continuous) cone fields with singularities. This setting contains (for questions which are parametrization independent such as the existence of Lyapounov functions) the case of continuous vector-fields on manifolds, of differential inclusions, of Lorentzian metrics, and of continuous cone fields. We generalize to this setting the equivalence between stable causality and the existence of tempor…
We prove local existence and uniqueness for the Newton-Schroedinger equation in three dimensions. Further we show that the blow-up alternative holds true as well as the continuous dependence of the solution w.r.t. the initial data.
We consider the problem Δu+V(x)u = f'(u) in RN. Here the nonlinearity has a double power behavior and V is invariant under an orthogonal involution, with V ({\infty}) = 0. An existence theorem of one pair of solutions which change sign exactly once is given.
The Cauchy problem is studied for the self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint Schroedinger equations. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the weighted Sobolev spaces. Secondly we prove that if potentials are depending continuously and differentiably on a parameter, so are the solutions, respectively. The non-self-adjoint Schroedinger equations that we study are those used in the theory of continuous quantum measurements. The results on the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the weighted Sobolev spaces will play a crucial role in the proof for the convergence of the Feyn…
We consider a quantum particle moving in the one dimensional lattice Z and interacting with a indefinite sign external field v. We prove that the associated discrete Schroedinger operator H can have one or two eigenvalues, situated as below the bottom of the essential spectrum, as well as above its top. Moreover, we show that the operator H can have two eigenvalues outside of the essential spectrum such that one of them is situated below the bottom of the essential spectrum, and other one above its top.
We consider a time-dependent one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a symmetric potential double well represented by two delta interactions. Among our results we give an explicit formula for the integral kernel of the unitary semigroup associated with the linear part of the Hamiltonian. Then we establish the corresponding Strichartz-type estimate and we prove local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the original nonlinear problem.
We study Schroedinger operators with a random potential of alloy type. The single site potentials are allowed to change sign. For a certain class of them we prove a Wegner estimate. This is a key ingredient in an existence proof of pure point spectrum of the considered random Schroedinger operators. Our estimate is valid for all bounded energy intervals and all space dimensions and implies the existence of the density of states.
In an abstract framework, a new concept on time operator, ultra-weak time operator, is introduced, which is a concept weaker than that of weak time operator. Theorems on the existence of an ultra-weak time operator are established. As an application of the theorems, it is shown that Schroedinger operators H with potentials V obeying suitable conditions, including the Hamiltonian of the hydrogen atom, have ultra-weak time operators. Moreover, a class of Borel measurable functions $f$ such that $f(H)$ has an ultra-weak time operator is found.
We prove the existence of orbitally stable standing waves with prescribed $L^2$-norm for the following Schrödinger-Poisson type equation \label{intro} %{%{ll} iψ_{t}+ Δψ- (|x|^{-1}*|ψ|^{2}) ψ+|ψ|^{p-2}ψ=0 \text{in} \R^{3}, %-Δϕ= |ψ|^{2}& \text{in} \R^{3},%. when $p\in \{8/3\}\cup (3,10/3)$. In the case $3<p<10/3$ we prove the existence and stability only for sufficiently large $L^2$-norm. In case $p=8/3$ our approach recovers the result of Sanchez and Soler \cite{SS} %concerning the existence and stability for sufficiently small charges. The main point is the analysis of the compactness of min…
We consider a two-dimensional integrable Hamiltonian system with a vector and scalar potential in quantum mechanics. Contrary to the case of a pure scalar potential, the existence of a second order integral of motion does not guarantee the separation of variables in the Schroedinger equation. We introduce the concept of "quasiseparation of variables" and show that in many cases it allows us to reduce the calculation of the energy spectrum and wave functions to linear algebra.
Motivated by some models arising in quantum plasma dynamics, in this paper we study the Maxwell-Schrödinger system with a power-type nonlinearity. We show the local well-posedness in $H^2(\mathbb{R}^3)\times H^{3/2}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ and the global existence of finite energy weak solutions, these results are then applied to the analysis of finite energy weak solutions for Quantum Magnetohydrodynamic systems.
The existence of the velocity potential is a direct consequence from the derivation of the continuity equation from the Schroedinger equation. This implies that the Cole-Hopf transformation is applicable to the Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible flow and allows reducing the Navier-Stokes equation to the Einstein-Kolmogorov equation, in which the reaction term depends on the pressure. The solution to the resulting equation, and to the Navier-Stokes equation as well, can then be written in terms of the Green's function of the heat equation and is given in the form of an integral mappin…
For classical dynamical systems time operators are introduced as selfadjoint operators satisfying the so called weak Weyl relation with the unitary groups of time evolution. Dynamical systems with time operators are intrinsically irreversible because they admit Lyapounov operators as functions of the time operator. For quantum systems selfadjoint time operators are defined in the same way or as dilations of symmetric ones dealing with the time-energy uncertainty relation, times of occurrence or survival probabilities. This work tackles the question of the existence of selfadjoint time operator…
Resonances which result from perturbation of embedded eigenvalues are studied by time dependent methods. A general theory is developed, with new and weaker conditions, allowing for perturbations of threshold eigenvalues and relaxed Fermi Golden rule. The exponential decay rate of resonances is addressed; its uniqueness in the time dependent picture is shown is certain cases. The relation to the existence of meromorphic continuation of the properly weighted Green's function to time dependent resonance is further elucidated, by giving an equivalent time dependent asymptotic expansion of the solu…
We address the question whether Bohmian trajectories exist for all times. Bohmian trajectories are solutions of an ordinary differential equation involving a wavefunction obeying either the Schroedinger or the Dirac equation. Some trajectories may end in finite time, for example by running into a node of the wavefunction, where the law of motion is ill-defined. The aim is to show, under suitable assumptions on the initial wavefunction and the potential, global existence of almost all solutions. We provide a simpler and more transparent proof of the known global existence result for spinless Sc…
We analyse a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the time-evolution of the wave function of an electron beam, interacting selfconsistently through a Hartree-Fock nonlinearity and through the repulsive Coulomb interaction of an atomic nucleus. The electrons are supposed to move under the action of a time dependent, rapidly periodically oscillating electromagnetic potential. This can be considered a simplified effective single particle model for an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). We prove the existence and uniqueness for the Cauchy problem and the convergence of wave-functions to corresponding …
The mathematical equivalence between finite state stochastic machine and non-dissipative and dissipative quantum tight-binding and Schroedinger model is derived. Stochastic Finite state machine is also expressed by classical epidemic model and can reproduce the quantum entanglement emerging in the case of electrostatically coupled qubits described by von-Neumann entropy both in non-dissipative and dissipative case. The obtained results shows that quantum mechanical phenomena might be simulated by classical statistical model as represented by finite state stochastic machine. It includes the qua…
We study a nonlinear Schroedinger equation arising in the mean-field description of dipolar quantum gases. Under the assumption of sufficiently strong dipolar interactions, the existence of standing waves, and hence solitons, is proved together with some of their properties. This gives a rigorous argument for the possible existence of solitary waves in Bose-Einstein condensates, which originate solely due to the dipolar interaction between the particles.
At the lower edge of the energy continuum the birth of an isolated quantum bound state is studied as caused by an infinitesimally small change of the interaction. In our model a single, asymptotically free massive quantum particle is assumed moving along a discretized real line of coordinates, $x \in \mathbb{Z}$. The motion is assumed controlled by a weakly nonlocal 2J-parametric external potential which is non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric. Mathematically, the bound states are then reinterpreted as Sturmians, i.e., the bound-state energy is treated as a variable real parameter while the value of…
Inspired by F. Wilczek's QCD Lite, quantum Yang-Mills-Weyl Dynamics (YMWD) describes quantum interaction between gauge bosons (associated with a simple compact gauge Lie group $\mathbb{G}$) and larks (massless chiral fields colored by an irreducible unitary representation of $\mathbb{G}$). Schroedinger representation of this quantum Yang-Mills-Weyl theory is based on a sesqui-holomorphic operator calculus of infinite-dimensional operators with variational derivatives. The spectrum of the quantum YMWD, with initial data in the central euclidean ball of a radius $0<R<+\infty$, is self-similar in…
Quantum mechanical scattering theory is studied for time-dependent Schroedinger operators, in particular for particles in a rotating potential. Under various assumptions about the decay rate at infinity we show uniform boundedness in time for the kinetic energy of scattering states, existence and completeness of wave operators, and existence of a conserved quantity under scattering. In a simple model we determine the energy transfered to a particle by a collision with a rotating blade.
We obtain time dependent $q$-Gaussian wave-packet solutions to a non linear Schrödinger equation recently advanced by Nobre, Rego-Montero and Tsallis (NRT) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 (2011) 10601]. The NRT non-linear equation admits plane wave-like solutions ($q$-plane waves) compatible with the celebrated de Broglie relations connecting wave number and frequency, respectively, with energy and momentum. The NRT equation, inspired in the $q$-generalized thermostatistical formalism, is characterized by a parameter $q$, and in the limit $q \to 1$ reduces to the standard, linear Schrödinger equation. T…
We study the Cauchy problem for the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation, perturbed by (higher order) dissipative nonlinearities. We prove global in-time existence of solutions for general initial data in the energy space. In particular we treat the energy-critical case of a quintic dissipation in three space dimensions.
We consider quantum (unitary) continuous time evolution of spins on a lattice together with quantum evolution of the lattice itself. In physics such evolution was discussed in connection with quantum gravity. It is also related to what is called quantum circuits, one of the incarnations of a quantum computer. We consider simpler models for which one can obtain exact mathematical results. We prove existence of the dynamics in both Schroedinger and Heisenberg pictures, construct KMS states on appropriate C*-algebras. We show (for high temperatures) that for each system where the lattice undergoe…
We consider two-dimensional Schroedinger equations with honeycomb potentials and slow time-periodic forcing of the form: $$iψ_t (t,x) = H^\varepsilon(t)ψ=\left(H^0+2i\varepsilon A (\varepsilon t) \cdot \nabla \right)ψ,\quad H^0=-Δ+V (x) .$$ The unforced Hamiltonian, $H^0$, is known to generically have Dirac (conical) points in its band spectrum. The evolution under $H^\varepsilon(t)$ of {\it band limited Dirac wave-packets} (spectrally localized near the Dirac point) is well-approximated on large time scales ($t\lesssim \varepsilon^{-2+}$) by an effective time-periodic Dirac equation with a ga…
The iteration procedure of supersymmetric transformations for the two-dimensional Schroedinger operator is implemented by means of the matrix form of factorization in terms of matrix 2x2 supercharges. Two different types of iterations are investigated in detail. The particular case of diagonal initial Hamiltonian is considered, and the existence of solutions is demonstrated. Explicit examples illustrate the construction.
We consider two-dimensional Schroedinger operators with an attractive potential in the form of a channel of a fixed profile built along an unbounded curve composed of a circular arc and two straight semi-lines. Using a test-function argument with help of parallel coordinates outside the cut-locus of the curve, we establish the existence of discrete eigenvalues. This is a special variant of a recent result of Exner in a non-smooth case and via a different technique which does not require non-positive constraining potentials.
We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in unbounded strips on ruled surfaces in any space dimension. We locate the essential spectrum under the condition that the strip is asymptotically flat. If the Gauss curvature of the strip equals zero, we establish the existence of discrete spectrum under the condition that the curve along which the strip is built is not a geodesic. On the other hand, if it is a geodesic and the Gauss curvature is not identically equal to zero, we prove the existence of Hardy-type inequalities. We also derive an effective operator for thin strips, which enables one to repla…
A basic aspect of the recently proposed approach to quantum mechanics is that no use of any axiomatic interpretation of the wave function is made. In particular, the quantum potential turns out to be an intrinsic potential energy of the particle, which, similarly to the relativistic rest energy, is never vanishing. This is related to the tunnel effect, a consequence of the fact that the conjugate momentum field is real even in the classically forbidden regions. The quantum stationary Hamilton-Jacobi equation is defined only if the ratio psi^D/psi of two real linearly independent solutions of t…
