We study the Schroedinger operator with a constant magnetic field in the exterior of a compact domain in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, $d\geq 1$. The spectrum of this operator consists of clusters of eigenvalues around the Landau levels. We give asymptotic formulas for the rate of accumulation of eigenvalues in these clusters. When the compact is a Reinhart domain we are able to show a more precise asymptotic formula.
We consider the Schrodinger operator with a constant magnetic field in the exterior of a compact domain on the plane. The spectrum of this operator consists of clusters of eigenvalues around the Landau levels. We discuss the rate of accumulation of eigenvalues in a fixed cluster.
We prove that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator (DtN) has no spectrum in the lower half of the complex plane. We find several application of this fact in scattering by obstacles with impedance boundary conditions. In particular, we find an upper bound for the gradient of the scattering amplitude and for the total cross section. We justify numerical approximations by providing bounds on difference between theoretical and approximated solutions without using any a priory unknown constants.
We study the spectral flow of Landau-Robin hamiltonians in the exterior of a compact domain with smooth boundary. This provides a method to study the spectrum of the exterior Landau-Robin hamiltonian's dependence on the choice of Robin data, even explaining the heuristics of how the spectrum of the Robin problem asymptotically tends to the spectrum of the Dirichlet problem. The main technical result concerns the continuous dependence of Landau-Robin hamiltonians on the Robin data in the gap topology. The problem can be localized to the compact boundary where the asymptotic behavior of the spec…
We study the asymptotic distribution of the resonances near the Landau levels $Λ\_q =(2q+1)b$, $q \in \mathbb{N}$, of the Dirichlet (resp. Neumann, resp. Robin) realization in the exterior of a compact domain of $\mathbb{R}^3$ of the 3D Schr{ö}dinger operator with constant magnetic field of scalar intensity $b\textgreater{}0$. We investigate the corresponding resonance counting function and obtain the main asymptotic term. In particular, we prove the accumulation of resonances at the Landau levels and the existence of resonance free sectors. In some cases, it provides the discreteness of the s…
It is known that von Neumann-Landau wave equation can present a mathematical formalism of motion of quantum mechanics, that is an extension of Schrödinger's wave equation. In this paper, we concern with the Dirichlet problem of the stationary von Neumann-Landau wave equation: {(- \triangle_x + \triangle_y) Φ(x, y) = 0, x, y \in Ω, Φ|_{\partial Ω\times \partial Ω} = f, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbf{R}^n.$ By introducing anti-inner product spaces, we show the existence and uniqueness of the generalized solution for the above Dirichlet problem by functional-analytic methods.
An explicit Lagrangian description is given for the Heisenberg equation on the algebra of operators of a quantum system, and for the Landau-von Neumann equation on the manifold of quantum states which are isospectral with respect to a fixed reference quantum state.
Generalizing previous results obtained for the spectrum of the Dirichlet and Neumann realizations in a bounded domain of a Schrödinger operator with a purely imaginary potential $h^2Δ+iV$ in the semiclassical limit $h\to 0$ we address the same problem in exterior domains. In particular we obtain the left margin of the spectrum, and the emptiness of the essential part of the spectrum under some additional assumptions.
We have constructed a sequence of solutions of the Helmholtz equation forming an orthogonal sequence on a given surface. Coefficients of these functions depend on an explicit algebraic formulae from the coefficient of the surface. Moreover, for exterior Helmholtz equation we have constructed an explicit normal derivative of the Dirichlet Green function. In the same way the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator is constructed. We proved that normalized coefficients are uniformly bounded from zero.
We prove that the time-harmonic solutions to Maxwell's equations in a 3D exterior domain converge to a certain static solution as the frequency tends to zero. We work in weighted Sobolev spaces and construct new compactly supported replacements for Dirichlet-Neumann fields. Moreover, we even show convergence in operator norm.
Existence and uniqueness of the scattering solutions is proved for a class of bounded rough obstacles which is much larger than the class of Lipschitz obstacles. Integral equations method is not used. The approach is based on the representation theorem for selfadjoint operators via closed symmetric quadratic forms and on the limiting absorption principles. For the Dirichlet boundary condition no assumptions on the smoothness of the boundary are needed, for the Neumann boundary condition and the Robin boundary condition some assumptions on the smoothness of the boundary are needed.
We continue the study of the operator of generalized Maxwell equations and completely discover the behavior of the solutions of the time-harmonic equations as the frequency tends to zero. Thereby, we identify degenerate operators in terms of special 'polynomially growing' solutions of a corresponding static problem, which must be added to the 'usual' Neumann series in order to describe the low frequency asymptotic adequately.
The aim of this paper is to establish estimates of the lowest eigenvalue of the Neumann realization of $(i\nabla+B\textbf{A})^2$ on an open bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ $Ω$ with smooth boundary as $B$ tends to infinity. We introduce a "magnetic" curvature mixing the curvature of $\partialΩ$ and the normal derivative of the magnetic field and obtain an estimate analogous with the one of constant case. Actually, we give a precise estimate of the lowest eigenvalue in the case where the restriction of magnetic field to the boundary admits a unique minimum which is non degenerate. We also give …
Given a Schrödinger differential expression on an exterior Lipschitz domain we prove strict inequalities between the eigenvalues of the corresponding selfadjoint operators subject to Dirichlet and Neumann or Dirichlet and mixed boundary conditions, respectively. Moreover, we prove a strict inequality between the eigenvalues of two different elliptic differential operators on the same domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
Multiple-spiral-wave solutions of the general cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in bounded domains are considered. We investigate the effect of the boundaries on spiral motion under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, for small values of the twist parameter $q$. We derive explicit laws of motion for rectangular domains and we show that the motion of spirals becomes exponentially slow when the twist parameter exceeds a critical value depending on the size of the domain. The oscillation frequency of multiple-spiral patterns is also analytically obtained.
The energy levels, generally known as the Landau levels, which characterize the motion of an electron in a constant magnetic field, are those of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator, with each level being infinitely degenerate. We show in this paper how the associated von Neumann algebra of observables display a modular structure in the sense of the Tomita-Takesaki theory, with the algebra and its commutant referring to the two orientations of the magnetic field. A KMS state can be built which in fact is the Gibbs state for an ensemble of harmonic oscillators. Mathematically, the modular st…
We provide a leading order semiclassical asymptotics of the energy of bound states for magnetic Neumann Schrödinger operators in two dimensional (exterior) domains with smooth boundaries. The asymptotics is valid all the way up to the bottom of the essential spectrum. When the spectral parameter is varied near the value where bound states become allowed in the interior of the domain, we show that the energy has a boundary and a bulk component. The estimates rely on coherent states, in particular on the construction of `boundary coherent states', and magnetic Lieb-Thirring estimates.
Ginzburg-Landau fields are the solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau equations which depend on two positive parameters, $α$ and $β$. We give conditions on $α$ and $β$ for the existence of irreducible solutions of these equations. Our results hold for arbitrary compact, oriented, Riemannian 2-manifolds (for example, bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$, spheres, tori, etc.) with de Gennes-Neumann boundary conditions. We also prove that, for each such manifold and all positive $α$ and $β$, the Ginzburg-Landau free energy is a Palais-Smale function on the space of gauge equivalence classes, Ginzburg-Land…
We study the three dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity. Several `natural' definitions of the (third) critical field, $H_{C_3}$, governing the transition from the superconducting state to the normal state, are considered. We analyze the relation between these fields and give conditions as to when they coincide. An interesting part of the analysis is the study of the monotonicity of the ground state energy of the Laplacian, with constant magnetic field and with Neumann (magnetic) boundary condition, in a domain $Ω$. It is proved that the ground state energy is a strictly incre…
