The aim of this paper is to establish estimates of the lowest eigenvalue of the Neumann realization of $(i\nabla+B\textbf{A})^2$ on an open bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ $Ω$ with smooth boundary as $B$ tends to infinity. We introduce a "magnetic" curvature mixing the curvature of $\partialΩ$ and the normal derivative of the magnetic field and obtain an estimate analogous with the one of constant case. Actually, we give a precise estimate of the lowest eigenvalue in the case where the restriction of magnetic field to the boundary admits a unique minimum which is non degenerate. We also give an estimate of the third critical field in Ginzburg-Landau theory in the variable magnetic field case.
In this paper we are interested in the semi-classical estimates of the spectrum of the Neumann Laplacian in dimension 3. This work aims to present a complementary case to the one presented in the paper of Helffer and Morame in the case of constant magnetic field. More precisely, in the case when the magnetic field is variable and under the most generic condition for which boundary localizations can be observed, we prove a three terms upper bound for the lowest eigenvalue and establish some semi-classical behaviour of the spectrum.
In this paper we study the self-adjoint Krein-von Neumann realization $A_K$ of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an explicit and self-contained description of the domain of $A_K$ in terms of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary traces, and we establish a Weyl asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues of $A_K$.
We demonstrate how to approximate one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interaction by a Neumann Laplacian on a narrow waveguide-like domain. Namely, we consider a domain consisting of a straight strip and a small protuberance with "room-and-passage" geometry. We show that in the limit when the perpendicular size of the strip tends to zero, and the room and the passage are appropriately scaled, the Neumann Laplacian on this domain converges in (a kind of) norm resolvent sense to the above singular Schrödinger operator. Also we prove Hausdorff convergence of the spectra. In both cases …
We consider the Laplacian in a domain squeezed between two parallel curves in the plane, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the curves and Neumann boundary conditions on the other. We derive two-term asymptotics for eigenvalues in the limit when the distance between the curves tends to zero. The asymptotics are uniform and local in the sense that the coefficients depend only on the extremal points where the ratio of the curvature radii of the Neumann boundary to the Dirichlet one is the biggest. We also show that the asymptotics can be obtained from a form of norm-resolvent con…
We study the Neumann Laplacian $-Δ^N$ restricted to a periodic waveguide. In this situation its spectrum $σ(-Δ^N)$ presents a band structure. Our goal and strategy is to get spectral information from an analysis of the asymptotic behavior of these bands provided that the waveguide is sufficiently thin.
We consider the Laplacian in a domain squeezed between two parallel hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces of any dimension, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the hypersurfaces and Neumann boundary conditions on the other. We derive two-term asymptotics for eigenvalues in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. The asymptotics are uniform and local in the sense that the coefficients depend only on the extremal points where the ratio of the area of the Neumann boundary to the Dirichlet one is locally the biggest.
We study the Neumann Laplacian operator $-Δ_Ω^N$ restricted to a twisted waveguide $Ω$. The goal is to find the effective operator when the diameter of $Ω$ tends to zero. However, when $Ω$ is "squeezed" there are divergent eigenvalues due to the transverse oscillations. We show that each one of these eigenvalues influences the action of the effective operator in a different way. In the case where $Ω$ is periodic and sufficiently thin, we find information about the absolutely continuous spectrum of $-Δ_Ω^N$ and the existence and location of band gaps in its structure.
We consider the Laplacian in a straight strip, subject to a combination of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We show that a switch of the respective boundary conditions leads to a Hardy inequality for the Laplacian. As a byproduct of our method, we obtain a simple proof of a theorem of Dittrich and Kriz.
The article deals with a convergence of the spectrum of the Neumann Laplacian in a periodic unbounded domain $Ω^\varepsilon$ depending on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. The domain has the form $Ω^\varepsilon=\mathbb{R}^n\setminus S^\varepsilon$, where $S^\varepsilon$ is an $\varepsilon\mathbb{Z}^n$-periodic family of trap-like screens. We prove that for an arbitrarily large $L$ the spectrum has just one gap in $[0,L]$ when $\varepsilon$ small enough, moreover when $\varepsilon\to 0$ this gap converges to some interval whose edges can be controlled by a suitable choice of geometry of the sc…
This paper is devoted to the spectral analysis of the Laplacian with constant magnetic field on a cone of aperture $α$ and Neumann boundary condition. We analyze the influence of the orientation of the magnetic field. In particular, for any orientation of the magnetic field, we prove the existence of discrete spectrum below the essential spectrum in the limit $α\to 0$ and establish a full asymptotic expansion for the $n$-th eigenvalue and the $n$-th eigenfunction.
Inequalities for the eigenvalues of the (negative) Laplacian subject to mixed boundary conditions on polyhedral and more general bounded domains are established. The eigenvalues subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition on a part of the boundary and a Neumann boundary condition on the remainder of the boundary are estimated in terms of either Dirichlet or Neumann eigenvalues. The results complement several classical inequalities between Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues due to Pólya, Payne, Levine and Weinberger, Friedlander, and others.
We study Laplacians associated to a graph and single out a class of such operators with special regularity properties. In the case of locally finite graphs, this class consists of all selfadjoint, non-negative restrictions of the standard formal Laplacian and we can characterize the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians as the largest and smallest Markovian restrictions of the standard formal Laplacian. In the case of general graphs, this class contains the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians and we describe how these may differ from each other, characterize when they agree, and study connections to e…
Given the Laplacian on a planar, convex domain with piecewise linear boundary subject to mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, we provide a sufficient condition for its lowest eigenvalue to dominate the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian with the complementary boundary conditions (i.e. with Dirichlet replaced by Neumann and vice versa). The application of this result to triangles gives an affirmative partial answer to a recent conjecture. Moreover, we prove a further observation of similar flavor for right triangles.
We derive quantitative bounds for eigenvalues of complex perturbations of the indefinite Laplacian on the real line. Our results substantially improve existing results even for real-valued potentials. For $L^1$-potentials, we obtain optimal spectral enclosures which accommodate also embedded eigenvalues, while our result for $L^p$-potentials yield sharp spectral bounds on the imaginary parts of eigenvalues of the perturbed operator for all $p\in[1,\infty)$. The sharpness of the results are demonstrated by means of explicit examples.
Neumann domains of Laplacian eigenfunctions form a natural counterpart of nodal domains. The restriction of an eigenfunction to one of its nodal domains is the first Dirichlet eigenfunction of that domain. This simple observation is fundamental in many works on nodal domains. We consider a similar property for Neumann domains. Namely, given a Laplacian eigenfunction $f$ and its Neumann domain $Ω$, what is the position of $\ .f\ |_Ω$ in the Neumann spectrum of $Ω$? The current paper treats this spectral position problem on the two-dimensional torus. We fully solve it for separable eigenfunction…
