This is a continuation of our earlier paper on the universality of the eigenvalues of Wigner random matrices. The main new results of this paper are an extension of the results in that paper from the bulk of the spectrum up to the edge. In particular, we prove a variant of the universality results of Soshnikov for the largest eigenvalues, assuming moment conditions rather than symmetry conditions. The main new technical observation is that there is a significant bias in the Cauchy interlacing law near the edge of the spectrum which allows one to continue ensuring the delocalization of eigenvectors.
In this paper, we consider the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of random matrices. Our main result shows that these statistics are determined by the first four moments of the distribution of the entries. As a consequence, we derive the universality of eigenvalue gap distribution and $k$-point correlation and many other statistics (under some mild assumptions) for both Wigner Hermitian matrices and Wigner real symmetric matrices.
We study the universality of the eigenvalue statistics of the covariance matrices $\frac{1}{n}M^* M$ where $M$ is a large $p\times n$ matrix obeying condition $\bf{C1}$. In particular, as an application, we prove a variant of universality results regarding the smallest singular value of $M_{p,n}$. This paper is an extension of the results in \cite{tvcovariance} from the bulk of the spectrum up to the edge.
We consider a Gaussian random matrix with correlated entries that have a power law decay of order $d>2$ and prove universality for the extreme eigenvalues. A local law is proved using the self-consistent equation combined with a decomposition of the matrix. This local law along with concentration of eigenvalues around the edge allows us to get an bound for extreme eigenvalues. Using a recent result of the Dyson-Brownian motion, we prove universality of extreme eigenvalues.
Universality properties of the distribution of the generalized eigenvalues of a pencil of random Hankel matrices, arising in the solution of the exponential interpolation problem of a complex discrete stationary process, are proved under the assumption that every finite set of random variables of the process have a multivariate spherical distribution. An integral representation of the condensed density of the generalized eigenvalues is also derived. The asymptotic behavior of this function turns out to depend only on stationarity and not on the specific distribution of the process.
We studied the universality of Wishart ensembles whose covariance matrix has 2 distinct eigenvalues. We studied the asymptotic limit when the number of both eigenvalues goes to infinity and obtained universality results. In this case, the limiting eigenvalue distribution can be supported on 1 or 2 disjoint intervals. We obtained a necessary and sufficient condition on the parameters such that the limiting distribution is supported on 2 disjoint intervals and have computed the eigenvalue density in the limit. Furthermore, by using Riemann-Hilbert analysis, we have shown that under proper rescal…
In this paper, we survey some recent progress on rigorously establishing the universality of various spectral statistics of Wigner Hermitian random matrix ensembles, focusing on the Four Moment Theorem and its refinements and applications, including the universality of the sine kernel and the Central limit theorem of several spectral parameters. We also take the opportunity here to issue some errata for some of our previous papers in this area.
We studied universality of Wishart ensembles whose covariance matrix has 2 distinct eigenvalues and the number of each of these eigenvalue goes to infinity in the asymptotic limit. In this case, the limiting eigenvalue distribution can be supported on 1 or 2 disjoint intervals. In our previous work the case when the support consists of 2 intervals was studied. This paper complements our previous analysis and studied the case when the support consists of a single interval. By using Riemann-Hilbert analysis, we have shown that under proper rescaling of the eigenvalues, the limiting correlation k…
We derive the universality principle for empirical spectral distributions of sample covariance matrices and their Stieltjes transforms. This principle states the following. Suppose quadratic forms of random vectors $y_p$ in $R^p$ satisfy a weak law of large numbers and the sample size grows at the same rate as $p$. Then the limiting spectral distribution of corresponding sample covariance matrices is the same as in the case with conditionally Gaussian $y_p$. This result is generalized for $m$-dependent martingale difference sequences and $m$-dependent linear processes.
We consider complex sample covariance matrices $M_N=\frac{1}{N}YY^*$ where $Y$ is a $N \times p$ random matrix with i.i.d. entries $Y_{ij}, 1\leq i\leq N, 1\leq j \leq p$ with distribution $F$. Under some regularity and decay assumption on $F$, we prove universality of some local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk of the spectrum in the limit where $N\to \infty$ and $\lim_{N \to \infty}p/N =γ$ for any real number $γ\in (0, \infty)$.
In this paper, we explain the dependance of the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues of a Deformed Wigner model with respect to the eigenvectors of the perturbation matrix. We exhibit quite general situations that will give rise to universality or non universality of the fluctuations.
We describe the resolvent approach for the rigorous study of the mescoscopic regime of Hermitian matrix spectra. We present results reflecting the universal behavior of the smoothed density of eigenvalue distribution of large random matrices
We consider the least singular value of $M = R^* X T + U^* YV$, where $R,T,U,V$ are independent Haar-distributed unitary matrices and $X, Y$ are deterministic diagonal matrices. Under weak conditions on $X$ and $Y$, we show that the limiting distribution of the least singular value of $M$, suitably rescaled, is the same as the limiting distribution for the least singular value of a matrix of i.i.d. gaussian random variables. Our proof is based on the dynamical method used by Che and Landon to study the local spectral statistics of sums of Hermitian matrices.
We study the distribution of the least singular value associated to an ensemble of sparse random matrices. Our motivating example is the ensemble of $N\times N$ matrices whose entries are chosen independently from a Bernoulli distribution with parameter $p$. These matrices represent the adjacency matrices of random Erdős--Rényi digraphs and are sparse when $p\ll 1$. We prove that in the regime $pN\gg 1$, the distribution of the least singular value is universal in the sense that it is independent of $p$ and equal to the distribution of the least singular value of a Gaussian matrix ensemble. We…
The purpose of this note is twofold: firstly to improve the known results on variation of extreme eigenvalues of birth and death matrices and random walk matrices; and secondly to progress towards the solution of a thirty years old open problem concerning the variation of eigenvalues of these matrices. Keywords: Birth and death matrices, random walk matrices, eigenvalues, monotonicity
The universality phenomenon asserts that the distribution of the eigenvalues of random matrix with i.i.d. zero mean, unit variance entries does not depend on the underlying structure of the random entries. For example, a plot of the eigenvalues of a random sign matrix, where each entry is +1 or -1 with equal probability, looks the same as an analogous plot of the eigenvalues of a random matrix where each entry is complex Gaussian with zero mean and unit variance. In the current paper, we prove a universality result for sparse random n by n matrices where each entry is nonzero with probability …
Recently we proved (EPRSY, ERSTVY, ESY4, ESYY, EYY, EYY2, EYYrigi) that the eigenvalue correlation functions of a general class of random matrices converge, weakly with respect to the energy, to the corresponding ones of Gaussian matrices. Tao and Vu \cite{TV5} gave a proof that for the special case of Hermitian Wigner matrices the convergence can be strengthened to vague convergence at any fixed energy in the bulk. In this article we show that this theorem is an immediate corollary of our earlier results. Indeed, a more general form of this theorem also follows directly from our work \cite{EK…
We establish an invariance principle corresponding to the universality of random matrices. More precisely, we prove the dynamical universality of random matrices in the sense that, if the random point fields $ \muN $ of $ \nN $-particle systems describing the eigenvalues of random matrices or log-gases with general self-interaction potentials $ \V $ converge to some random point field $ μ$, then the associated natural $ \muN $-reversible diffusions represented by solutions of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) converge to some $ μ$-reversible diffusion given by the solution of an infinit…
We consider $N\times N$ random matrices of the form $H = W + V$ where $W$ is a real symmetric Wigner matrix and $V$ a random or deterministic, real, diagonal matrix whose entries are independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$ and we choose $V$ so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $V$ are typically of the same order. For a large class of diagonal matrices $V$ we show that the rescaled distribution of the extremal eigenvalues is given by the Tracy-Widom distribution $F_1$ in the limit of large $N$. Our proofs also apply to the complex Hermitian setting, i.e., …
In this short note, we extend the celebrated results of Tao and Vu, and Krishnapur on the universality of empirical spectral distributions to a wide class of inhomogeneous complex random matrices, by showing that a technical and hard-to-verify Fourier domination assumption may be replaced simply by a natural uniform anti-concentration assumption. Along the way, we show that inhomogeneous complex random matrices, whose expected squared Hilbert-Schmidt norm is quadratic in the dimension, and whose entries (after symmetrization) are uniformly anti-concentrated at $0$ and infinity, typically have …
In this paper, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the edge universality of sample covariance matrices with general population. We consider sample covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal Q = TX(TX)^{*}$, where the sample $X$ is an $M_2\times N$ random matrix with $i.i.d.$ entries with mean zero and variance $N^{-1}$, and $T$ is an $M_1 \times M_2$ deterministic matrix satisfying $T^* T$ is diagonal. We study the asymptotic behavior of the largest eigenvalues of $\mathcal Q$ when $M:=\min\{M_1,M_2\}$ and $N$ tends to infinity with $\lim_{N \to \infty} {N}/{M}=d \in (0, \infty)$.…
We study linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with Brownian motion entries. We prove that, the centred, normalized linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices obey a central limit theorem (CLT) type result. We also discuss the convergence of linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with independent entries for odd power monomials. Our method is based on trace formula, moment method and some results of process convergence.
In this paper, we prove the edge universality of largest eigenvalues for separable covariance matrices of the form $\mathcal Q :=A^{1/2}XBX^*A^{1/2}$. Here $X=(x_{ij})$ is an $n\times N$ random matrix with $x_{ij}=N^{-1/2}q_{ij}$, where $q_{ij}$ are $i.i.d.$ random variables with zero mean and unit variance, and $A$ and $B$ are respectively $n \times n$ and $N\times N$ deterministic non-negative definite symmetric (or Hermitian) matrices. We consider the high-dimensional case, i.e. ${n}/{N}\to d \in (0, \infty)$ as $N\to \infty$. Assuming $\mathbb E q_{ij}^3=0$ and some mild conditions on $A$ …
We consider $N\times N$ random matrices of the form $H=W+V$ where $W$ is a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix and $V$ is a random or deterministic, real, diagonal matrix whose entries are independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$, and we choose $V$ so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $V$ are typically of the same order. For a large class of diagonal matrices $V$, we show that the local statistics in the bulk of the spectrum are universal in the limit of large $N$.
We compute the limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edge of the spectrum of large Hermitian random matrices perturbed by the addition of small rank deterministic matrices. To be more precise, we consider random Hermitian matrices with independent Gaussian entries $M_{ij}, i\leq j$ with various expectations. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of such random matrices exhibits, in the large $N$ limit, various limiting distributions depending on both the eigenvalues of the matrix $(\mathbb{E}M_{ij})_{i,j=1}^N$ and its rank.
We consider random matrices whose entries are f(<Xi,Xj>) or f(||Xi-Xj||^2) for iid vectors Xi in R^p with normalized distribution. Assuming that f is sufficiently smooth and the distribution of Xi's is sufficiently nice, El Karoui [17] showed that the spectral distributions of these matrices behave as if f is linear in the Marchenko--Pastur limit. When Xi's are Gaussian vectors, variants of this phenomenon were recently proved for varying kernels, i.e. when f may depend on p, by Cheng and Singer [13]. Two results are shown in this paper: first it is shown that for a large class of distribution…
After proper rescaling and under some technical assumptions, the smallest eigenvalue of a sample covariance matrix with aspect ratio bounded away from 1 converges to the Tracy--Widom distribution. This complements the results on the largest eigenvalue, due to Soshnikov and Peche.
The circular law asserts that if $X_n$ is a $n \times n$ matrix with iid complex entries of mean zero and unit variance, then the empirical spectral distribution of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} X_n$ converges almost surely to the uniform distribution on the unit disk as $n$ tends to infinity. Answering a question of Tao, we prove the circular law for a general class of random block matrices with dependent entries. The proof relies on an inverse-type result for the concentration of linear operators and multilinear forms.
This article focuses on linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices with independent entries. Using the convergence of moments we show that the linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices for odd degree monomials with degree greater than or equal to three does not converge in distribution to a Gaussian random variable. This result is a departure from the known results, Liu, Sun and Wang (2012), Kumar and Maurya (2022), of linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices for even degree monomial test functions, where the limits were Gaussian random variables.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for finite-dimensional vectors of linear eigenvalue statistics of submatrices of Wigner random matrices under the assumption that test functions are sufficiently smooth. We connect the asymptotic covariance to a family of correlated Gaussian Free Fields.
We prove the universality for the eigenvalue gap statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for band matrices, in the regime where the band width is comparable with the dimension of the matrix, $W\sim N$. All previous results concerning universality of non-Gaussian random matrices are for mean-field models. By relying on a new mean-field reduction technique, we deduce universality from quantum unique ergodicity for band matrices.
We consider the local eigenvalue distribution of large self-adjoint $N\times N$ random matrices $\mathbf{H}=\mathbf{H}^*$ with centered independent entries. In contrast to previous works the matrix of variances $s_{ij} = \mathbb{E}\, |h_{ij}|^2 $ is not assumed to be stochastic. Hence the density of states is not the Wigner semicircle law. Its possible shapes are described in the companion paper [1]. We show that as $N$ grows, the resolvent, $\mathbf{G}(z)=(\mathbf{H}-z)^{-1}$, converges to a diagonal matrix, $ \mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{m}(z)) $, where $\mathbf{m}(z)=(m_1(z),\dots,m_N(z))$ solves …
For random $d$-regular graphs on $N$ vertices with $1 \ll d \ll N^{2/3}$, we develop a $d^{-1/2}$ expansion of the local eigenvalue distribution about the Kesten-McKay law up to order $d^{-3}$. This result is valid up to the edge of the spectrum. It implies that the eigenvalues of such random regular graphs are more rigid than those of Erdős-Rényi graphs of the same average degree. As a first application, for $1 \ll d \ll N^{2/3}$, we show that all nontrivial eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix are with very high probability bounded in absolute value by $(2 + o(1)) \sqrt{d - 1}$. As a second a…

We prove the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta conjecture at fixed energy in the bulk of the spectrum for generalized symmetric and Hermitian Wigner matrices. Previous results concerning the universality of random matrices either require an averaging in the energy parameter or they hold only for Hermitian matrices if the energy parameter is fixed. We develop a homogenization theory of the Dyson Brownian motion and show that microscopic universality follows from mesoscopic statistics.
We study the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of Gaussian divisible Hermitian Wigner matrices. These random matrices are obtained by adding an independent GUE matrix to an Hermitian random matrix with independent elements, a Wigner matrix. We prove that Tracy-Widom universality holds at the edge in this class of random matrices under the optimal moment condition that there is a uniform bound on the fourth moment of the matrix elements. Furthermore, we show that universality holds in the bulk for Gaussian divisible Wigner matrices if we just assume finite second moments.
A central limit theorem (CLT) for the smoothed empirical spectral distribution of sample covariance matrices is established. Moreover, the CLTs for the smoothed quantiles of Marcenko and Pastur's law have been also developed.
We show that the set of entries generated by any finite set of doubly stochastic matrices is nowhere dense, in contrast to the cases of stochastic matrices or unitary matrices. In other words, there is no finite universal set of doubly stochastic matrices, even with the weakest notion of universality. Our proof is based on a theorem for topological semigroups with the convergent property. A topological semigroup is convergent if every infinite product converges. We show that in a compact and convergent semigroup, under some restrictions, the closure of every finitely generated subsemigroup can…
We consider the adjacency matrix of the ensemble of Erdős-Rényi random graphs which consists of graphs on $N$ vertices in which each edge occurs independently with probability $p$. We prove that in the regime $pN \gg 1$ these matrices exhibit bulk universality in the sense that both the averaged $n$-point correlation functions and distribution of a single eigenvalue gap coincide with those of the GOE. Our methods extend to a class of random matrices which includes sparse ensembles whose entries have different variances.
Consider a random matrix of the form $W_n = M_n + D_n$, where $M_n$ is a Wigner matrix and $D_n$ is a real deterministic diagonal matrix ($D_n$ is commonly referred to as an external source in the mathematical physics literature). We study the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of $W_n$ for a general class of Wigner matrices $M_n$ and diagonal matrices $D_n$. Unlike the setting of many recent results concerning universality, the global semicircle law fails for this model. However, we can still obtain the universal sine kernel formula for the correlation functions. This demonstrate…
In this paper we consider Wigner random matrices -- symmetric n by n random matrices whose entries are independent identically distributed real random variables. We prove that the probability distribution of one or several eigenvalues close to the center of the spectrum does not depend on the probability distribution of the entries of the matrix and is the same as for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. We make only mild smoothness assumptions on the probability distribution of the entries and assume that the probability distribution of the entries decays polynomially with sufficiently large pow…
We consider large non-Hermitian real or complex random matrices $X$ with independent, identically distributed centred entries. We prove that their local eigenvalue statistics near the spectral edge, the unit circle, coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble, i.e. when the matrix elements of $X$ are Gaussian. This result is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the universality of the Tracy-Widom distribution at the spectral edges of the Wigner ensemble.
For sample covariance matrices with iid entries with sub-Gaussian tails, when both the number of samples and the number of variables become large and the ratio approaches to one, it is a well-known result of A. Soshnikov that the limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue is same as the of Gaussian samples. In this paper, we extend this result to two cases. The first case is when the ratio approaches to an arbitrary finite value. The second case is when the ratio becomes infinity or arbitrarily small.
We prove the edge and bulk universality of random Hermitian matrices with equi-spaced external source. One feature of our method is that we use neither a Christoffel-Darboux type formula, nor a double-contour formula, which are standard methods to prove universality results for exactly solvable models. This matrix model is an example of a biorthogonal ensemble, which is a special kind of determinantal point process whose kernel generally does not have a Christoffel-Darboux type formula or double-contour representation. Our methods may showcase how to handle universality problems for biorthogon…
Consider an $N\times N$ hermitian random matrix with independent entries, not necessarily Gaussian, a so called Wigner matrix. It has been conjectured that the local spacing distribution, i.e. the distribution of the distance between nearest neighbour eigenvalues in some part of the spectrum is, in the limit as $N\to\infty$, the same as that of hermitian random matrices from GUE. We prove this conjecture for a certain subclass of hermitian Wigner matrices.
We prove the first explicit rate of convergence to the Tracy-Widom distribution for the fluctuation of the largest eigenvalue of sample covariance matrices that are not integrable. Our primary focus is matrices of type $ X^*X $ and the proof follows the Erdös-Schlein-Yau dynamical method. We use a recent approach to the analysis of the Dyson Brownian motion from [5] to obtain a quantitative error estimate for the local relaxation flow at the edge. Together with a quantitative version of the Green function comparison theorem, this gives the rate of convergence. Combined with a result of Lee-Sch…
