27pages, the mistake in the previous version is corrected; using I-method with the resonant decomposition gives an improvement over our previous results
We prove that the Cauchy problem of the mass-critical generalized KdV equation is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R)$ for $s>6/13$. Of course, we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state in the focusing case. The main approach is the "I-method" together with the multilinear correction analysis. Moreover, we use some "partially refined" argument to lower the upper control of the multiplier in the resonant interactions. The result improves the previous works of Fonseca, Linares, Ponce (2003) and Farah (2009).
We revisit the asymptotic analysis of the KdV shock problem in the soliton region. Our approach is based on the analysis of the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem and we extend the domain of validity of the asymptotic formulas while at the same time requiring less decay and smoothness for the initial data.
The Kawahara and modified Kawahara equations are fifth-order KdV type equations and have been derived to model many physical phenomena such as gravity-capillary waves and magneto-sound propagation in plasmas. This paper establishes the local well-posedness of the initial-value problem for Kawahara equation in $H^s({\mathbf R})$ with $s>-\frac74$ and the local well-posedness for the modified Kawahara equation in $H^s({\mathbf R})$ with $s\ge-\frac14$. To prove these results, we derive a fundamental estimate on dyadic blocks for the Kawahara equation through the $[k; Z]$ multiplier norm method o…
We prove well-posedness in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces $H^s$ at high regularity for a class of nonlinear higher-order dispersive equations generalizing the KdV hierarchy both on the line and on the torus.
We study the semiclassical limit of the (generalised) KdV equation, for initial data with Sobolev regularity, before the time of the gradient catastrophe of the limit conservation law. In particular, we show that in the semiclassical limit the solution of the KdV equation: i) converges in $H^s$ to the solution of the Hopf equation, provided the initial data belongs to $H^s$, ii) admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of the semiclassical parameter, if the initial data belongs to the Schwartz class. The result is also generalized to KdV equations with higher order linearities.
This article is concerned with the construction and analysis of new time discretizations for the KdV equation on a torus for low-regularity solutions below $H^1$. New harmonic analysis tools, including new averaging approximations to the exponential phase functions, new frequency decomposition techniques, and new trilinear estimates of the KdV operator, are established for the construction and analysis of time discretizations with higher convergence orders under low-regularity conditions. In addition, new techniques are introduced to establish stability estimates of time discretizations under …
In this paper, we establish the optimal convergence result of a second order exponential-type integrator from (136, Numer. Math., 2017) for solving the KdV equation under rough initial data. The scheme is explicit and efficient to implement. By rigorous error analysis, we show that the scheme provides the second order accuracy in $H^γ$ for initial data in $H^{γ+4}$ for any $γ\geq0$, where the regularity requirement is lower than the classical methods. The result is confirmed by numerical experiments and comparisons are made with the Strang splitting scheme.
Based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou for oscillatory Riemann--Hilbert problems and the Dbar approach, the long-time asymptotic behavior of solutions to the fifth-order modified Korteweg-de Vries equation on the line is studied in the case of initial conditions that belong to some weighted Sobolev spaces. Using techniques in Fourier analysis and the idea of $I$-method, we give its global well-posedness in lower regularity Sobolev spaces, and then obtain the asymptotic behavior in these spaces with weights.
In form of a case study for the KdV and the KdV2 equations, we present a novel approach of representing the frequencies of integrable PDEs which allows to extend them analytically to spaces of low regularity and to study their asymptotics. Applications include convexity properties of the Hamiltonians and wellposedness results in spaces of low regularity. In particular, it is proved that on $H^{s}$ the KdV2 equation is $C^{0}$-wellposed if $s\ge 0$ and illposed (in a strong sense) if $s < 0$.
We address two pressing questions in the theory of the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation. First, we show the uniqueness of solutions to KdV that are merely bounded, without any further decay, regularity, periodicity, or almost periodicity assumptions. The second question, emphasized by Deift, regards whether almost periodic initial data leads to almost periodic solutions to KdV. Building on the new observation that this is false for the Airy equation, we construct an example of almost periodic initial data whose KdV evolution remains bounded, but fails to be almost periodic at a later time. Ou…
In this paper, we consider the fifth-order modified Korteweg-de Vries (modified KdV) equation under the periodic boundary condition. We prove the local well-posedness in $H^s(\mathbb T)$, $s > 2$, via the energy method. The main tool is the short-time Fourier restriction norm method, which was first introduced in its current form by Ionescu, Kenig and Tataru [Global well-posedness of the KP-I initial-value problem in the energy space, Invent. Math. 173 (2) (2008) 265--304]. Besides, we use the frequency localized modified energy to control the high-low interaction component in the energy estim…
We consider the problem of the soliton propagation, in a slowly varying medium, for a generalized Korteweg - de Vries equations (gKdV). We study the effects of inhomogeneities on the dynamics of a standard soliton. We prove that slowly varying media induce on the soliton solution large dispersive effects at large time. Moreover, unlike gKdV equations, we prove that there is no pure-soliton solution in this regime.
In this paper we consider the long time behavior of the weakly damped, forced Korteweg-de Vries equation in the Sololev spaces of the negative indices in the periodic case. We prove that the solutions are uniformly bounded in $\dot{H}^s(\T)$ for $s>-\dfrac{1}{2}$. Moreover, we show that the solution-map possesses a global attractor in $\dot{H}^s(\T)$ for $s>-\dfrac{1}{2}$, which is a compact set in $H^{s+3}(\T)$.
An initial-boundary value problem for a generalized KdV equation posed on a half-line is considered. Existence and uniqueness of global regular solutions for arbitrary smooth initial data are established.
In this paper we prove instability of the soliton for the focusing, mass-critical generalized KdV equation. We prove that the solution to the generalized KdV equation for any initial data with mass smaller than the mass of the soliton and close to the soliton in $L^{2}$ norm must eventually move away from the soliton.
We use a Leibnitz rule type inequality for fractional derivatives to prove conditions under which a solution $u(x,t)$ of the k-generalized KdV equation is in the space $L^2(|x|^{2s}\,dx)$ for $s \in \mathbb R_{+}$.
In a recent paper, Kenig, Ponce and Vega study the low regularity behavior of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS), focusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV), and complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. Using soliton and breather solutions, they demonstrate the lack of local well-posedness for these equations below their respective endpoint regularities. In this paper, we study the defocusing analogues of these equations, namely defocusing NLS, defocusing mKdV, and real KdV, all in one spatial dimension, for which suitable soliton and breather solutions are unavailable. We construct fo…
We prove global existence and modified scattering for the solutions of the generalized fifth-order KdV equation with critical nonlinearity for small and localized initial data. The proof is undergoing by using the space-time resonance method and the stationary phase argument.
Lower bound on the rate of decrease in time of the uniform radius of spatial analyticity of solutions to the quartic generalized KdV equation is derived, which improves an earlier result by Bona, Grujić and Kalisch.
In this paper we study the generalized Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with the nonlinear term of order three: $(u^{3+1})_x$. We prove sharp local well--posedness for the initial and boundary value problem posed on the right half line. We thus close the gap in the well--posedness theory of the generalized KdV which remained open after the seminal work of Colliander and Kenig in \cite{CK}.
In this paper we prove that the defocusing, mass - critical generalized KdV initial value problem is globally well-posed and scattering for $u_{0} \in L^{2}(\mathbf{R})$. We prove this via a concentration compactness argument.
We prove local in time well-posedness for a class of quasilinear Hamiltonian KdV-type equations with periodic boundary conditions, more precisely we show existence, uniqueness and continuity of the solution map. We improve the previous result in \cite{Mietka}, generalising the considered class of equations and improving the regularity assumption on the initial data.
In this note we report local well-posedness results for the Cauchy problems associated to generalized KdV type equations with dissipative perturbation for given data in the low regularity $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. The method of proof is based on the {\em contraction mapping principle} employed in some appropriate time weighted spaces.
We prove that the initial value problem (IVP) for the critical generalized KdV equation $u_{t}+u_{xxx}+(u^5)_{x}=0$ on the real line is globally well-posed in $H^{s}(\R)$ provided $s>3/5$.
We construct modified energies for the generalized KdV equation. As a consequence, we obtain quasi-invariance of the high order Gaussian measures along with $L^p$ regularity on the corresponding Radon-Nykodim density, as well as new bounds on the growth of the Sobolev norms of the solutions.
We consider the approximate control of solitons in generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. By introducing a suitable internal bilinear control on the equation, we prove that any soliton is locally null controllable, and moreover, any soliton can be accelerated to any particular positive velocity, after a suitable large amount of time. Precise estimates on the error terms and the rate of decay in the approximate null controllability result are also given. Our method introduces a new insight on the control of nonlinear objects, from the point of view of interaction and collision problems for no…
In this short note, we consider the global dynamics of the defocusing generalized KdV equations: u_t + u_{xxx} = (|u|^{p-1}u)_x. We use Tao's theorem that the energy moves faster than mass to prove a moment type dispersion estimate. As an application of the dispersion estimate, we show that there is no soliton-like solutions with decaying assumption.
We study the Cauchy problem for the generalized KdV and one-dimensional fourth-order derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations, for which the global well-posedness of solutions with the small rough data in certain scaling limit of modulation spaces is shown, which contain some data with infinite $L^{2}$ norm.
A nonlinear profile decomposition is established for solutions of supercritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. As a consequence, we obtain a concentration result for finite time blow-up solutions that are of Type II.
We consider solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations (gKdV) which are non dispersive in some sense (in the spirit of [18]) and which remain close to multi-solitons. We show that these solutions are necessarily pure multi-solitons. For the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) and the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) in particular, we obtain a characterization of multi-solitons and multi-breathers in terms of non-dispersion.
The solution of a coupled system consisting of generalized Korteweg-de Vries-type equations is obtained for all time where the initial data are analytic on a band in the complex plane. We show that the width of this band decreases algebraically with time.
This paper is a continuation of the paper \emph{Low regularity Cauchy problem for the fifth-order modified KdV equations on $\mathbb{T}$}. In this paper, we consider the fifth-order equation in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy as following: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_t u - \partial_x^5 u + 30u^2\partial_x u + 20 u\partial_x u \partial_x^3u + 10u \partial_x^3 u = 0, \hspace{1em} (t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}, u(0,x) = u_0(x) \in H^s(\mathbb{T}) \end{cases}. \end{equation*} We prove the local well-posedness of the fifth-order KdV equation for low regularity Sobolev in…
This paper is concerned with the local well-posedness for the higher-order generalized KdV type equation with low-degree of nonlinearity. The equation arises as a non-integrable and lower nonlinearity version of the higher-order KdV equation. As for the lower nonlinearity model of the KdV equation, Linares, the author and Ponce [11] prove the local well-posedness under a non-degenerate condition introduced by Cazenave and Naumkin [1]. In this paper, it turns out that the well-posedness result can be extended into the higher-order equation. We also give a lower bound for the lifespan of the sol…
We consider the IVP associated to the generalized KdV equation with low degree of non-linearity \begin{equation*} \partial_t u + \partial_x^3 u \pm |u|^α\partial_x u = 0,\; x,t \in \mathbb{R},\;α\in (0,1). \end{equation*} By using an argument similar to that introduced by Cazenave and Naumkin [2] we establish the local well-posedness for a class of data in an appropriate weighted Sobolev space. Also, we show that the solutions obtained satisfy the propagation of regularity principle proven in [3] in solutions of the $k$-generalized KdV equation.
Spatially periodic complex-valued solutions of the Burgers and KdV-Burgers equations are studied in this paper. It is shown that for any sufficiently large time T, there exists an explicit initial data such that its corresponding solution of the Burgers equation blows up at T. In addition, the global convergence and regularity of series solutions is established for initial data satisfying mild conditions.
We revisit the phenomenon of instability of solitons in the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, $u_t + \partial_x(u_{xx} + u^p) = 0$. It is known that solitons are unstable for nonlinearities $p \geq 5$, with the critical power $p=5$ being the most challenging case to handle. The critical case was proved by Martel-Merle in [11], where the authors crucially relied on the pointwise decay estimates of the linear KdV flow. In this paper, we show simplified approaches to obtain the instability of solitons via truncation and monotonicity, which can be also useful for other KdV-type equations.
In this paper we study uniqueness properties of solutions of the k-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. Our goal is to obtain sufficient conditions on the behavior of the difference $u_1-u_2$ of two solutions $u_1, u_2$ of the equation at two different times $t_0=0$ and $t_1=1$ which guarantee that $u_1\equiv u_2$.
We prove global well-posedness of the subcritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (the mKdV and the gKdV with quartic power of nonlinearity) subject to an additive random perturbation. More precisely, we prove that if the driving noise is a cylindrical Wiener process on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and the covariance operator is Hilbert-Schmidt in an appropriate Sobolev space, then the solutions with $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ data are globally well-posed in $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. This extends results obtained by A. de Bouard and A. Debussche for the stochastic KdV equation.
We give a detailed description in 1-D the growth of Sobolev norms for time dependent linear generalized KdV-type equations on the circle. For most initial data, the growth of Sobolev norms is polynomial in time for fixed analytic potential with admissible growth. If the initial data are given in a fixed smaller function space with more strict admissible growth conditions for $V(x,t)$ , then the growth of previous Sobolev norms is at most logarithmic in time.
We consider the defocusing generalized KdV equations on the circle. In particular, we construct global-in-time solutions with initial data distributed according to the Gibbs measure and show that the law of the random solutions, at any time, is again given by the Gibbs measure. In handling a nonlinearity of an arbitrary high degree, we make use of the Hermite polynomials and the white noise functional.
We prove special decay properties of solutions to the initial value problem associated to the $k$-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. These are related with persistence properties of the solution flow in weighted Sobolev spaces and with sharp unique continuation properties of solutions to this equation. As application of our method we also obtain results concerning the decay behavior of perturbations of the traveling wave solutions as well as results for solutions corresponding to special data.
We prove that multisoliton solutions of the Korteweg--de Vries equation are orbitally stable in $H^{-1}(\mathbb{R})$. We introduce a variational characterization of multisolitons that remains meaningful at such low regularity and show that all optimizing sequences converge to the manifold of multisolitons. The proximity required at the initial time is uniform across the entire manifold of multisolitons; this had not been demonstrated previously, even in $H^1$.
In this note we prove scattering for perturbations of solitons in the scaling space appropriate for the quartic nonlinearity, namely $\dot{H}^{-\frac16}$. The article relies strongly on refined estimates for a KdV equation linearized at the soliton. In contrast to the work of Tao (2006), we are able to work purely in the scaling space without additional regularity assumptions, allowing us to prove some results on the existence of inverse wave operators.
Fractional calculus of variation plays an important role to formulate the non-conservative physical problems. In this paper we use semi-inverse method and fractional variational principle to formulate the fractional order generalized Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation with Jumarie type fractional derivative and proposed a new method to solve the non-linear fractional differential equation named as expansion method. Using this method we obtained the solutions of fractional order generalized KdV. The obtained solutions are more general compare to other method and the solutions are expressed in term…
We present a general method for obtaining conservation laws for integrable PDE at negative regularity and exhibit its application to KdV, NLS, and mKdV. Our method works uniformly for these problems posed both on the line and on the circle.
We consider the mass-critical generalized Korteweg--de Vries equation $$(\partial_t + \partial_{xxx})u=\pm \partial_x(u^5)$$ for real-valued functions $u(t,x)$. We prove that if the global well-posedness and scattering conjecture for this equation failed, then, conditional on a positive answer to the global well-posedness and scattering conjecture for the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $(-i\partial_t + \partial_{xx})u=\pm (|u|^4u)$, there exists a minimal-mass blowup solution to the mass-critical generalized KdV equation which is almost periodic modulo the symmetries of the equat…
We consider the defocusing supercritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equation $\partial_t u+\partial_x^3u-\partial_x(u^{k+1})=0$, where $k>4$ is an even integer number. We show that if the initial data $u_0$ belongs to $H^1$ then the corresponding solution is global and scatters in $H^1$. Our method of proof is inspired on the compactness method introduced by C. Kenig and F. Merle.
We study the variable bottom generalized Korteweg-de Vries (bKdV) equation dt u=-dx(dx^2 u+f(u)-b(t,x)u), where f is a nonlinearity and b is a small, bounded and slowly varying function related to the varying depth of a channel of water. Many variable coefficient KdV-type equations, including the variable coefficient, variable bottom KdV equation, can be rescaled into the bKdV. We study the long time behaviour of solutions with initial conditions close to a stable, b=0 solitary wave. We prove that for long time intervals, such solutions have the form of the solitary wave, whose centre and scal…
We prove an endpoint multilinear estimate for the $X^{s,b}$ spaces associated to the periodic Airy equation. As a consequence we obtain sharp local well-posedness results for periodic generalized KdV equations, as well as some global well-posedness results below the energy norm. In particular we prove a multilinear estimate which completes the proof of global well-posedness for periodic KdV in a preceding paper (math.AP/0110045) down to the optimal regularity H^{-1/2}.
In this paper we consider the slightly $L^2$-supercritical gKdV equations $\partial_t u+(u_{xx}+u|u|^{p-1})_x=0$, with the nonlinearity $5<p<5+\varepsilon$ and $0<\varepsilon\ll 1$ . We will prove the existence and stability of a blow-up dynamic with self-similar blow-up rate in the energy space $H^1$ and give a specific description of the formation of the singularity near the blow-up time.
We show symplectic non-squeezing for the KdV equation on the line $\mathbb R$. This is achieved via finite-dimensional approximation. Our choice of finite-dimensional Hamiltonian system that effectively approximates the KdV flow is inspired by the recent breakthrough of Killip and Visan in the well-posedness theory of KdV in low regularity spaces, relying on its completely integrable structure. We also prove and exploit a weak well-posedness result for KdV in $H^{-1}(\mathbb R)$. Furthermore, the employment of our methods provides a new concise proof for the known result of symplectic non-sque…
In this paper, we show the global well-posedness for periodic gKdV equations in the space $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s\ge \frac12$ for quartic case, and $s> \frac59$ for quintic case. These improve the previous results of I-team in 2004. In particular, the result is sharp for quintic case. The main approaches are the I-method combining with the resonance decomposition developed by Miao et al in 2010, and a bilinear Strichartz estimate in periodic setting.
The long time behavior of solutions to the defocusing modified Korteweg-de vries (MKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou and its reformulation by Dieng and McLaughlin through $\overline{\partial}$-derivatives. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in lower regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques.
We prove the existence of Cantor families of small amplitude, linearly stable, quasi-periodic solutions of quasi-linear autonomous Hamiltonian generalized KdV equations. We consider the most general quasi-linear quadratic nonlinearity. The proof is based on an iterative Nash-Moser algorithm. To initialize this scheme, we need to perform a bifurcation analysis taking into account the strongly perturbative effects of the nonlinearity near the origin. In particular, we implement a weak version of the Birkhoff normal form method. The inversion of the linearized operators at each step of the iterat…
In this work we study the initial value problem (IVP) for the fifth order KdV equations, \begin{align*} \partial_{t}u+\partial_{x}^{5}u+u^k\partial_{x}u=0,\text{} & \quad x,t\in \mathbb R, \quad k=1,2, \end{align*} in weighted Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb R)\cap L^2(\langle x \rangle^{2r}dx)$. We prove local and global results. In the case $k=2$ we point out the relation between decay and regularity of the solution of the IVP.
