We prove an endpoint multilinear estimate for the $X^{s,b}$ spaces associated to the periodic Airy equation. As a consequence we obtain sharp local well-posedness results for periodic generalized KdV equations, as well as some global well-posedness results below the energy norm. In particular we prove a multilinear estimate which completes the proof of global well-posedness for periodic KdV in a preceding paper (math.AP/0110045) down to the optimal regularity H^{-1/2}.
The initial value problems for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and modified KdV (mKdV) equations under periodic and decaying boundary conditions are considered. These initial value problems are shown to be globally well-posed in all $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces $H^s$ where local well-posedness is presently known, apart from the $H^{1/4} (\R)$ endpoint for mKdV. The result for KdV relies on a new method for constructing almost conserved quantities using multilinear harmonic analysis and the available local-in-time theory. Miura's transformation is used to show that global well-posedness of modified K…
The $X^{s,b}$ spaces, as used by Beals, Bourgain, Kenig-Ponce-Vega, Klainerman-Machedon and others, are fundamental tools to study the low-regularity behaviour of non-linear dispersive equations. It is of particular interest to obtain bilinear or multilinear estimates involving these spaces. By Plancherel's theorem and duality, these estimates reduce to estimating a weighted convolution integral in terms of the $L^2$ norms of the component functions. In this paper we systematically study weighted convolution estimates on $L^2$. As a consequence we obtain sharp bilinear estimates for the KdV, w…
In this paper we prove new qualitative features of solutions of KdV on the circle. The first result says that the Fourier coefficients of a solution of KdV in Sobolev space $H^N,\, N\geq 0$, admit a WKB type expansion up to first order with strongly oscillating phase factors defined in terms of the KdV frequencies. The second result provides estimates for the approximation of such a solution by trigonometric polynomials of sufficiently large degree.
In this paper, the local well-posedness of periodic fifth order dispersive equation with nonlinear term $P_1(u)\p_xu + P_2(u)\p_x u\p_xu $. Here $P_1(u)$ and $P_2(u)$ are polynomials of $u$. We also get some new Strichartz estimates.
We are interested in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the Burgers, and the Whitham limit for a spatially periodic Boussinesq model with non-small contrast. We prove estimates between the KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham approximation and true solutions of the original system which guarantee that these amplitude equations make correct predictions about the dynamics of the spatially periodic Boussinesq model over the natural time scales of the amplitude equations. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis and energy estimates. The result is the first justification result of the KdV, the Burgers, an…
We construct modified energies for the generalized KdV equation. As a consequence, we obtain quasi-invariance of the high order Gaussian measures along with $L^p$ regularity on the corresponding Radon-Nykodim density, as well as new bounds on the growth of the Sobolev norms of the solutions.
The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with periodic boundary conditions is considered. It is shown that for $H^s$ initial data, $s>-1/2$, and for any $s_1<\min(3s+1,s+1)$, the difference of the nonlinear and linear evolutions is in $H^{s_1}$ for all times, with at most polynomially growing $H^{s_1}$ norm. The result also extends to KdV with a smooth, mean zero, time-dependent potential in the case $s\geq 0$. Our result and a theorem of Oskolkov for the Airy evolution imply that if one starts with continuous and bounded variation initial data then the solution of KdV (given by the $L^2$ theory o…
We prove that the KdV-Burgers is globally well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\T) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\T) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\T))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\T) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\T) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\T) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. In view of the result of Kappeler and Topalov for KdV it thus appears that even if the dissipation part of the KdV-Burgers equation allows to lower the $ C^\infty $ critical index with respect to the KdV equation, it does not permit to imp…
In this paper, we show the global well-posedness for periodic gKdV equations in the space $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s\ge \frac12$ for quartic case, and $s> \frac59$ for quintic case. These improve the previous results of I-team in 2004. In particular, the result is sharp for quintic case. The main approaches are the I-method combining with the resonance decomposition developed by Miao et al in 2010, and a bilinear Strichartz estimate in periodic setting.
We consider the effects of varying dispersion and nonlinearity on the stability of periodic traveling wave solutions of nonlinear PDE of KdV-type, including generalized KdV and Benjamin-Ono equations. In this investigation, we consider the spectral stability of such solutions that arise as small perturbations of an equilibrium state. A key feature of our analysis is the development of a nonlocal Floquet-like theory that is suitable to analyze the $L^2(\RM)$ spectrum of the associated linearized operators. Using spectral perturbation theory then, we derive a relationship between the power of th…
In this paper we establish the orbital stability of periodic waves related to the logarithmic Korteweg-de Vries equation. Our motivation is inspired in the recent work \cite{carles}, in which the authors established the well-posedness and the linear stability of Gaussian solitary waves. By using the approach put forward recently in \cite{natali1} to construct a smooth branch of periodic waves as well as to get the spectral properties of the associated linearized operator, we apply the abstract theories in \cite{grillakis1} and \cite{weinstein1} to deduce the orbital stability of the periodic t…
We consider the KdV equation on the Sobolev space of periodic distributions. We obtain estimates of the solution of the KdV in terms of action variables.
We prove the existence of Cantor families of small amplitude, linearly stable, quasi-periodic solutions of quasi-linear autonomous Hamiltonian generalized KdV equations. We consider the most general quasi-linear quadratic nonlinearity. The proof is based on an iterative Nash-Moser algorithm. To initialize this scheme, we need to perform a bifurcation analysis taking into account the strongly perturbative effects of the nonlinearity near the origin. In particular, we implement a weak version of the Birkhoff normal form method. The inversion of the linearized operators at each step of the iterat…
We consider Cauchy problems of some dispersive PDEs with random initial data. In particular, we construct local-in-time solutions to the mean-zero periodic KdV almost surely for the initial data in the support of the mean-zero Gaussian measures on H^s(T), s > s_0 where s_0 = -11/6 + \sqrt{61}/6 \thickapprox -0.5316 < -1/2, by exhibiting nonlinear smoothing under randomization on the second iteration of the integration formulation. We also show that there is no nonlinear smoothing for the dispersionless cubic Szegö equation under randomization of initial data.
We demonstrate norm inflation for nonlinear nonlocal equations, which extend the Korteweg-de Vries equation to permit fractional dispersion, in the periodic and non-periodic settings. That is, an initial datum is smooth and arbitrarily small in a Sobolev space, but the solution becomes arbitrarily large in the Sobolev space after an arbitrarily short time.
We prove the existence and stability of Cantor families of quasi-periodic, small amplitude solutions of quasi-linear (i.e. strongly nonlinear) autonomous Hamiltonian perturbations of KdV.
In this article, we begin a systematic study of the boundedness and the nuclearity properties of multilinear periodic pseudo-differential operators and multilinear discrete pseudo-differential operators on $L^p$-spaces. First, we prove analogues of known multilinear Fourier multipliers theorems (proved by Coifman and Meyer, Grafakos, Tomita, Torres, Kenig, Stein, Fujita, Tao, etc.) in the context of periodic and discrete multilinear pseudo-differential operators. For this, we use the periodic analysis of pseudo-differential operators developed by Ruzhansky and Turunen. Later, we investigate th…
The Cauchy problem for Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation on $\mathbb{R}^2$ is shown to be global well-posed for the initial date in $H^{s}$ provided $s>-\frac{1}{13}$. As conservation laws are invalid in Sobolev spaces below $L^2$, we construct an almost conserved quantity using multilinear correction term following the $I$-method introduced by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka and Tao. In contrast to KdV equation, the main difficulty is to handle the resonant interactions which are significant due to the multidimensional and multilinear setting of the problem. The proof relies upon the bilinear…
In this paper we obtain the following stability result for periodic multi-solitons of the KdV equation: We prove that under any given semilinear Hamiltonian perturbation of small size $\varepsilon > 0$, a large class of periodic multi-solitons of the KdV equation, including ones of large amplitude, are orbitally stable for a time interval of length at least $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first stability result of such type for periodic multi-solitons of large size of an integrable PDE.
We address two pressing questions in the theory of the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation. First, we show the uniqueness of solutions to KdV that are merely bounded, without any further decay, regularity, periodicity, or almost periodicity assumptions. The second question, emphasized by Deift, regards whether almost periodic initial data leads to almost periodic solutions to KdV. Building on the new observation that this is false for the Airy equation, we construct an example of almost periodic initial data whose KdV evolution remains bounded, but fails to be almost periodic at a later time. Ou…
Near linear evolution in Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with periodic boundary conditions is established under the assumption of high frequency initial data. This result is obtained by the method of normal form reduction.
We establish local well-posedness in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, with $s\geq -1/2$, for the initial value problem issues of the equation $$ u_t + u_{xxx}+ηLu + uu_x=0;\; x\in \mathbb{T},\; t\geq0, $$ where $η>0$, $(Lu)^{\wedge}(k)=-Φ(k)\hat{u}(k)$, $k\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $Φ\in \mathbb{R}$ is bounded above. Particular cases of this problem are the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation for $Φ(k)=-k^2$, the derivative Korteweg-de Vries-Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for $Φ(k)=k^2-k^4$, and the Ostrovsky-Stepanyams-Tsimring equation for $Φ(k)=|k|-|k|^3$.
We prove that the Cauchy problem of the mass-critical generalized KdV equation is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R)$ for $s>6/13$. Of course, we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state in the focusing case. The main approach is the "I-method" together with the multilinear correction analysis. Moreover, we use some "partially refined" argument to lower the upper control of the multiplier in the resonant interactions. The result improves the previous works of Fonseca, Linares, Ponce (2003) and Farah (2009).
We prove local in time well-posedness for a class of quasilinear Hamiltonian KdV-type equations with periodic boundary conditions, more precisely we show existence, uniqueness and continuity of the solution map. We improve the previous result in \cite{Mietka}, generalising the considered class of equations and improving the regularity assumption on the initial data.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the higher-order KdV-type equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+(-1)^{j+1}\partial_{x}^{2j+1}u + \frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2}) = 0,j\in N^{+},x\in\mathbf{T}= [0,2πλ) \end{eqnarray*} with low regularity data and $λ\geq 1$. Firstly, we show that the Cauchy problem for the periodic higher-order KdV equation is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $s\geq -j+\frac{1}{2},j\geq2.$ By using some new Strichartz estimate and some new function spaces, we also show that the Cauchy problem for the periodic higher-order KdV equation is ill-posed in …
It is a matter of experience that nonlinear waves in dispersive media, propagating primarily in one direction, may appear periodic in small space and time scales, but their characteristics --- amplitude, phase, wave number, etc. --- slowly vary in large space and time scales. In the 1970's, Whitham developed an asymptotic (WKB) method to study the effects of small "modulations" on nonlinear periodic wave trains. Since then, there has been a great deal of work aiming at rigorously justifying the predictions from Whitham's formal theory. We discuss recent advances in the mathematical understandi…
We prove the orbital stability of periodic traveling-wave solutions for systems of dispersive equations with coupled nonlinear terms. Our method is basically developed under two assumptions: one concerning the spectrum of the linearized operator around the traveling wave and another one concerning the existence of a conserved quantity with suitable properties. The method can be applied to several systems such as the Liu-Kubota-Ko system, the modified KdV system and a log-KdV type system.
We consider the local well-posedness problem of a one-parameter family of coupled KdV-type systems both in the periodic and non-periodic setting. In particular, we show that certain resonances occur, closely depending on the value of a coupling parameter αwhen α\ne 1. In the periodic setting, we use the Diophantine conditions to characterize the resonances, and establish sharp local well-posedness of the system in H^s(\mathbb{T}_λ), s \geq s^\ast, where s^\ast = s^\ast(α) \in ({1/2}, 1] is determined by the Diophantine characterization of certain constants derived from the coupling parameter α…
Spatially periodic complex-valued solutions of the Burgers and KdV-Burgers equations are studied in this paper. It is shown that for any sufficiently large time T, there exists an explicit initial data such that its corresponding solution of the Burgers equation blows up at T. In addition, the global convergence and regularity of series solutions is established for initial data satisfying mild conditions.
In this paper, we consider the fifth-order modified Korteweg-de Vries (modified KdV) equation under the periodic boundary condition. We prove the local well-posedness in $H^s(\mathbb T)$, $s > 2$, via the energy method. The main tool is the short-time Fourier restriction norm method, which was first introduced in its current form by Ionescu, Kenig and Tataru [Global well-posedness of the KP-I initial-value problem in the energy space, Invent. Math. 173 (2) (2008) 265--304]. Besides, we use the frequency localized modified energy to control the high-low interaction component in the energy estim…
We provide conditions for existence of hyperbolic, unbounded periodic and elliptic solutions in terms of Weierstrass $\wp$ functions of both third and fifth-order KdV--BBM (Korteweg-de Vries--Benjamin, Bona \& Mahony) regularized long wave equation. An analysis for the initial value problem is developed together with a local and global well-posedness theory for the third-order KdV--BBM equation. Traveling wave reduction is used together with zero boundary conditions to yield solitons and periodic unbounded solutions, while for nonzero boundary conditions we find solutions in terms of Weierstra…
We continue our study of the well-posedness theory of a one-parameter family of coupled KdV-type systems in the periodic setting. When the value of a coupling parameter α\in (0, 4) \setminus 1, we show that the Gibbs measure is invariant under the flow and the system is globally well-posed almost surely on the statistical ensemble, provided that certain Diophantine conditions are satisfied.
In this work, we study the random series expansion of a multidimensional KdV type equation with a diffusion term, the so-called Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation. We impose random initial data and periodic boundary condition with period $L$ on this equation. Using the random series expansion, we derive the $3$-wave kinetic equation on the inertial range for $t\lesssim L^{-\varepsilon}T_{\text{kin}}$. Our result reaches kinetic time scale up to $\varepsilon$ loss.
We prove the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the Korteweg-de Vries equation in a quasi periodic function space. The function space contains functions such that f=f_1+f_2+...+f_N where f_j is in the Sobolev space of order s>-1/2N of a_j periodic functions. Note that f is not a periodic function when the ratio of periods a_i/a_j is irrational. The main tool of the proof is the Fourier restriction norm method introduced by Bourgain. We also prove an ill-posedness result in the sense that the flow map (if it exists) is not C^2, which is related to the Diophantine problem.
This paper concerns spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations. The relevant eigenvalue problem is defined by the composition of an unbounded self-adjoint operator with a finite number of negative eigenvalues and an unbounded non-invertible symplectic operator $\partial_x$. The instability index theorem is proven under a generic assumption on the self-adjoint operator both in the case of solitary waves and periodic waves. This result is reviewed in the context of other recent results on spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations.
We prove the invariance of the mean 0 white noise for the periodic KdV. First, we show that the Besov-type space \hat{b}^s_{p, \infty}, sp <-1, contains the support of the white noise. Then, we prove local well-posedness in \hat{b}^s_{p, \infty} for p= 2+, s = -{1/2}+ such that sp <-1. In establishing the local well-posedness, we use a variant of the Bourgain spaces with a weight. This provides an analytical proof of the invariance of the white noise under the flow of KdV obtained in Quastel-Valko.
In this paper we develop and use successive averaging methods for explaining the regularization mechanism in the the periodic Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation in the homogeneous Sobolev spaces $\dot{H}^s$, for $s\ge0$. Specifically, we prove the global existence, uniqueness, and Lipschitz continuous dependence on the initial data of the solutions of the periodic KdV. For the case where the initial data is in $L_2$ we also show the Lipschitz continuous dependence of these solutions with respect to the initial data as maps from $\dot{H}^s$ to $\dot{H}^s$, for $s\in(-1,0]$.
Given a suitable solution $V(t,x)$ to the Korteweg--de Vries equation on the real line, we prove global well-posedness for initial data $u(0,x) \in V(0,x) + H^{-1}(\mathbb{R})$. Our conditions on $V$ do include regularity but do not impose any assumptions on spatial asymptotics. We show that periodic profiles $V(0,x) \in H^5(\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$ satisfy our hypotheses. In particular, we can treat localized perturbations of the much-studied periodic traveling wave solutions (cnoidal waves) of KdV. In our companion paper we show that smooth step-like initial data also satisfy our hypotheses. …
We study the Cauchy problem for the KdV equation $\partial_t u - 6 u \partial_x u + \partial_x^3 u = 0$ with almost periodic initial data $u(x,0)=V(x)$. We consider initial data $V$, for which the associated Schrödinger operator is absolutely continuous and has a spectrum that is not too thin in a sense we specify, and show the existence, uniqueness, and almost periodicity in time of solutions. This establishes a conjecture of Percy Deift for this class of initial data. The result is shown to apply to all small analytic quasiperiodic initial data with Diophantine frequency vector.
In this paper we prove the persistence of space periodic multi-solitons of arbitrary size under any quasi-linear Hamiltonian perturbation, which is smooth and sufficiently small. This answers positively a longstanding question whether KAM techniques can be further developed to prove the existence of quasi-periodic solutions of arbitrary size of strongly nonlinear perturbations of integrable PDEs.
Stationary solutions on a bounded interval for an initial-boundary value problem to Korteweg--de~Vries and modified Korteweg--de~Vries equation (for the last one both in focusing and defocusing cases) are constructed. The method of the study is based on the theory of conservative systems with one degree of freedom. The obtained solutions turn out to be periodic. Exact relations between the length of the interval and coefficients of the equations which are necessary and sufficient for existence of nontrivial solutions are established.
In this paper, we prove that the periodic higher-order KdV-type equation \[\left\{\begin{array}{ll} \partial_t u + (-1)^{j+1} \partial_x^{2j+1}u + \frac12 \partial_x(u^2)=0, \hspace{1em} &(t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}, \\ u(0,x) = u_0(x), &u_0 \in H^s(\mathbb{T}). \end{array} \right.\] is globally well-posed in $H^s$ for $s \ge -\frac{j}{2}$, $j \ge 3$. The proof of the global well-posedness is based on "I-method" introduced by Colliander et al. \cite{CKSTT1}. To apply "I-method", we factorize the resonant functions by using the different ways from Hirayama \cite{Hirayama}. Furthermor…
The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with periodic boundary conditions is considered. The interaction of a periodic solitary wave (cnoidal wave) with high frequency radiation of finite energy ($L^2$-norm) is studied. It is proved that the interaction of low frequency component (cnoidal wave) and high frequency radiation is weak for finite time in the following sense: the radiation approximately satisfies Airy equation.
We prove two new mixed sharp bilinear estimates of Schrödinger-Airy type. In particular, we obtain the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem of the Schrödinger - Kortweg-deVries (NLS-KdV) system in the \emph{periodic setting}. Our lowest regularity is $H^{1/4}\times L^2$, which is somewhat far from the naturally expected endpoint $L^2\times H^{-1/2}$. This is a novel phenomena related to the periodicity condition. Indeed, in the continuous case, Corcho and Linares proved local well-posedness for the natural endpoint $L^2\times H^{-{3/4}+}$. Nevertheless, we conclude the global well-posedn…
We start by constructing a Hilbert manifold T of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle (modulo the group of bi-holomorphic self-mappings of the disc). This space, which could be thought of as a completion of the universal Teichmueller space, is endowed with a right-invariant Kaehler metric. Using results from the theory of quasiconformal mappings we construct an embedding of T into the infinite dimensional Segal-Wilson Grassmannian. The latter turns out to be a very natural ambient space for T. This allows us to prove that T's sectional curvature is negative in the holomorphic d…
We consider the KdV equation $$ \partial_t u +\partial^3_x u +u\partial_x u=0 $$ with quasi-periodic initial data whose Fourier coefficients decay exponentially and prove existence and uniqueness, in the class of functions which have an expansion with exponentially decaying Fourier coefficients, of a solution on a small interval of time, the length of which depends on the given data and the frequency vector involved. For a Diophantine frequency vector and for small quasi-periodic data (i.e., when the Fourier coefficients obey $|c(m)| \le \varepsilon \exp(-κ_0 |m|)$ with $\varepsilon > 0$ suffi…
We prove nonlinear modulational instability for both periodic and localized perturbations of periodic traveling waves for several dispersive PDEs, including the KDV type equations (e.g. the Whitham equation, the generalized KDV equation, the Benjamin-Ono equation), the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the BBM equation. First, the semigroup estimates required for the nonlinear proof are obtained by using the Hamiltonian structures of the linearized PDEs; Second, for KDV type equations the loss of derivative in the nonlinear term is overcome in two complementary cases: (1) for smooth nonlinear…
