We establish local well-posedness in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, with $s\geq -1/2$, for the initial value problem issues of the equation $$ u_t + u_{xxx}+ηLu + uu_x=0;\; x\in \mathbb{T},\; t\geq0, $$ where $η>0$, $(Lu)^{\wedge}(k)=-Φ(k)\hat{u}(k)$, $k\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $Φ\in \mathbb{R}$ is bounded above. Particular cases of this problem are the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation for $Φ(k)=-k^2$, the derivative Korteweg-de Vries-Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for $Φ(k)=k^2-k^4$, and the Ostrovsky-Stepanyams-Tsimring equation for $Φ(k)=|k|-|k|^3$.
In this work we study the initial value problem (IVP) for the fifth order KdV equations, \begin{align*} \partial_{t}u+\partial_{x}^{5}u+u^k\partial_{x}u=0,\text{} & \quad x,t\in \mathbb R, \quad k=1,2, \end{align*} in weighted Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb R)\cap L^2(\langle x \rangle^{2r}dx)$. We prove local and global results. In the case $k=2$ we point out the relation between decay and regularity of the solution of the IVP.
The long time behavior of solutions to the defocusing modified Korteweg-de vries (MKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou and its reformulation by Dieng and McLaughlin through $\overline{\partial}$-derivatives. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in lower regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques.
Studied here is the large-time behavior of solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation posed on the right half-line under the effect of a localized damping. Assuming as in \cite{linares-pazoto} that the damping is active on a set $(a_0,+\infty)$ with $a_0>0$, we establish the exponential decay of the solutions in the weighted spaces $L^2((x+1)^mdx)$ for $m\in \N ^*$ and $L^2(e^{2bx}dx)$ for $b>0$ by a Lyapunov approach. The decay of the spatial derivatives of the solution is also derived.
We demonstrate norm inflation for nonlinear nonlocal equations, which extend the Korteweg-de Vries equation to permit fractional dispersion, in the periodic and non-periodic settings. That is, an initial datum is smooth and arbitrarily small in a Sobolev space, but the solution becomes arbitrarily large in the Sobolev space after an arbitrarily short time.
We give a detailed description in 1-D the growth of Sobolev norms for time dependent linear generalized KdV-type equations on the circle. For most initial data, the growth of Sobolev norms is polynomial in time for fixed analytic potential with admissible growth. If the initial data are given in a fixed smaller function space with more strict admissible growth conditions for $V(x,t)$ , then the growth of previous Sobolev norms is at most logarithmic in time.
We consider the Cauchy problem associated to the recently derived higher order hamiltonian model for unidirectional water waves and prove global existence for given data in the Sobolev space $H^s$, $s\geq 1$. We also prove an ill-posedness result by showing that the flow-map is not continuous if the given data has Sobolev regularity $s< 1$. The results obtained in this work are sharp.
The KdV-equation $u_t = -u_{xxx} + 6uu_x$ on the circle admits a global nonlinear Fourier transform, also known as Birkhoff map, linearizing the KdV flow. The regularity properties of $u$ are known to be closely related to the decay properties of the corresponding nonlinear Fourier coefficients. In this paper we obtain two-sided polynomial estimates of all integer Sobolev norms $||u||_m$, $m\ge 0$, in terms of the weighted norms of the nonlinear Fourier transformed, which are linear in the highest order. We further obtain quantitative estimates of the nonlinear Fourier transformed in arbitrary…
We prove well-posedness in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces $H^s$ at high regularity for a class of nonlinear higher-order dispersive equations generalizing the KdV hierarchy both on the line and on the torus.
Based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou for oscillatory Riemann--Hilbert problems and the Dbar approach, the long-time asymptotic behavior of solutions to the fifth-order modified Korteweg-de Vries equation on the line is studied in the case of initial conditions that belong to some weighted Sobolev spaces. Using techniques in Fourier analysis and the idea of $I$-method, we give its global well-posedness in lower regularity Sobolev spaces, and then obtain the asymptotic behavior in these spaces with weights.
In this paper we prove new qualitative features of solutions of KdV on the circle. The first result says that the Fourier coefficients of a solution of KdV in Sobolev space $H^N,\, N\geq 0$, admit a WKB type expansion up to first order with strongly oscillating phase factors defined in terms of the KdV frequencies. The second result provides estimates for the approximation of such a solution by trigonometric polynomials of sufficiently large degree.
In this note we report local well-posedness results for the Cauchy problems associated to generalized KdV type equations with dissipative perturbation for given data in the low regularity $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. The method of proof is based on the {\em contraction mapping principle} employed in some appropriate time weighted spaces.
In this work, we study the initial value problems associated to some linear perturbations of KdV equations. Our focus is in the well-posedness issues for initial data given in the $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. We derive bilinear estimate in a space with weight in the time variable and obtain sharp local well-posedness results.
Bourgain(1993) proved that the periodic modified KdV equation (mKdV) is locally well-posed in Sobolev spave H^s(T), s >= 1/2, by introducing new weighted Sobolev spaces X^s,b, where the uniqueness holds conditionally, namely in the intersection of C([0, T]; H^s) and X^s,b. In this paper, we establish unconditional well-posedness of mKdV in H^s(T), s >= 1/2, i.e. we in addition establish unconditional uniqueness in C([0, T]; H^s), s >= 1/2, of solutions to mKdV. We prove this result via differentiation by parts. For the endpoint case s = 1/2, we perform careful quinti- and septi-linear estimate…
We construct modified energies for the generalized KdV equation. As a consequence, we obtain quasi-invariance of the high order Gaussian measures along with $L^p$ regularity on the corresponding Radon-Nykodim density, as well as new bounds on the growth of the Sobolev norms of the solutions.
In this paper we prove that in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces, in the case of no bound states, the scattering map of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) on $\mathbb R$ is a perturbation of the Fourier transform by a regularizing operator. As an application of this result, we show that the difference of the KdV flow and the corresponding Airy flow is 1-smoothing.
In this paper, the local well-posedness of periodic fifth order dispersive equation with nonlinear term $P_1(u)\p_xu + P_2(u)\p_x u\p_xu $. Here $P_1(u)$ and $P_2(u)$ are polynomials of $u$. We also get some new Strichartz estimates.
We are interested in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the Burgers, and the Whitham limit for a spatially periodic Boussinesq model with non-small contrast. We prove estimates between the KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham approximation and true solutions of the original system which guarantee that these amplitude equations make correct predictions about the dynamics of the spatially periodic Boussinesq model over the natural time scales of the amplitude equations. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis and energy estimates. The result is the first justification result of the KdV, the Burgers, an…
The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with periodic boundary conditions is considered. It is shown that for $H^s$ initial data, $s>-1/2$, and for any $s_1<\min(3s+1,s+1)$, the difference of the nonlinear and linear evolutions is in $H^{s_1}$ for all times, with at most polynomially growing $H^{s_1}$ norm. The result also extends to KdV with a smooth, mean zero, time-dependent potential in the case $s\geq 0$. Our result and a theorem of Oskolkov for the Airy evolution imply that if one starts with continuous and bounded variation initial data then the solution of KdV (given by the $L^2$ theory o…
We prove that the KdV-Burgers is globally well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\T) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\T) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\T))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\T) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\T) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\T) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. In view of the result of Kappeler and Topalov for KdV it thus appears that even if the dissipation part of the KdV-Burgers equation allows to lower the $ C^\infty $ critical index with respect to the KdV equation, it does not permit to imp…
In this paper, we show the global well-posedness for periodic gKdV equations in the space $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s\ge \frac12$ for quartic case, and $s> \frac59$ for quintic case. These improve the previous results of I-team in 2004. In particular, the result is sharp for quintic case. The main approaches are the I-method combining with the resonance decomposition developed by Miao et al in 2010, and a bilinear Strichartz estimate in periodic setting.
We consider the KdV equation on the Sobolev space of periodic distributions. We obtain estimates of the solution of the KdV in terms of action variables.
We consider the effects of varying dispersion and nonlinearity on the stability of periodic traveling wave solutions of nonlinear PDE of KdV-type, including generalized KdV and Benjamin-Ono equations. In this investigation, we consider the spectral stability of such solutions that arise as small perturbations of an equilibrium state. A key feature of our analysis is the development of a nonlocal Floquet-like theory that is suitable to analyze the $L^2(\RM)$ spectrum of the associated linearized operators. Using spectral perturbation theory then, we derive a relationship between the power of th…
The initial-boundary value problem (ibvp) for the $m$-th order dispersion Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation on the half-line with rough data and solution in restricted Bourgain spaces is studied using the Fokas Unified Transform Method (UTM). Thus, this work advances the implementation of the Fokas method, used earlier for the KdV on the half-line with smooth data and solution in the classical Hadamard space, consisting of function that are continuous in time and Sobolev in the spatial variable, to the more general Bourgain spaces framework of dispersive equations with rough data on the half-li…
We prove special decay properties of solutions to the initial value problem associated to the $k$-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. These are related with persistence properties of the solution flow in weighted Sobolev spaces and with sharp unique continuation properties of solutions to this equation. As application of our method we also obtain results concerning the decay behavior of perturbations of the traveling wave solutions as well as results for solutions corresponding to special data.
In this paper we establish the orbital stability of periodic waves related to the logarithmic Korteweg-de Vries equation. Our motivation is inspired in the recent work \cite{carles}, in which the authors established the well-posedness and the linear stability of Gaussian solitary waves. By using the approach put forward recently in \cite{natali1} to construct a smooth branch of periodic waves as well as to get the spectral properties of the associated linearized operator, we apply the abstract theories in \cite{grillakis1} and \cite{weinstein1} to deduce the orbital stability of the periodic t…
We prove the existence of Cantor families of small amplitude, linearly stable, quasi-periodic solutions of quasi-linear autonomous Hamiltonian generalized KdV equations. We consider the most general quasi-linear quadratic nonlinearity. The proof is based on an iterative Nash-Moser algorithm. To initialize this scheme, we need to perform a bifurcation analysis taking into account the strongly perturbative effects of the nonlinearity near the origin. In particular, we implement a weak version of the Birkhoff normal form method. The inversion of the linearized operators at each step of the iterat…
We consider the IVP associated to the generalized KdV equation with low degree of non-linearity \begin{equation*} \partial_t u + \partial_x^3 u \pm |u|^α\partial_x u = 0,\; x,t \in \mathbb{R},\;α\in (0,1). \end{equation*} By using an argument similar to that introduced by Cazenave and Naumkin [2] we establish the local well-posedness for a class of data in an appropriate weighted Sobolev space. Also, we show that the solutions obtained satisfy the propagation of regularity principle proven in [3] in solutions of the $k$-generalized KdV equation.
We consider Cauchy problems of some dispersive PDEs with random initial data. In particular, we construct local-in-time solutions to the mean-zero periodic KdV almost surely for the initial data in the support of the mean-zero Gaussian measures on H^s(T), s > s_0 where s_0 = -11/6 + \sqrt{61}/6 \thickapprox -0.5316 < -1/2, by exhibiting nonlinear smoothing under randomization on the second iteration of the integration formulation. We also show that there is no nonlinear smoothing for the dispersionless cubic Szegö equation under randomization of initial data.
In this paper we study weak continuity of the dynamical systems for the KdV equation in H^{-3/4}(R) and the modified KdV equation in H^{1/4}(R). This topic should have significant applications in the study of other properties of these equations such as finite time blow-up and asymptotic stability and instability of solitary waves. The spaces considered here are borderline Sobolev spaces for the corresponding equations from the viewpoint of the local well-posedness theory. We first use a variant of the method of [5] to prove weak continuity for the mKdV, and next use a similar result for a mKdV…
We prove global well-posedness of the subcritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (the mKdV and the gKdV with quartic power of nonlinearity) subject to an additive random perturbation. More precisely, we prove that if the driving noise is a cylindrical Wiener process on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and the covariance operator is Hilbert-Schmidt in an appropriate Sobolev space, then the solutions with $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ data are globally well-posed in $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. This extends results obtained by A. de Bouard and A. Debussche for the stochastic KdV equation.
In this paper we obtain global well-posedness in low order Sobolev spaces of higher order KdV type equations with dissipation. The result is optimal in the sense that the flow-map is not twice continuously differentiable in rougher spaces. The solution is shown to be smooth for positive times.
In this article we consider the Cauchy problem with large initial data for an equation of the form (\partial_t+\partial_x^3)u=F(u,u_x,u_{xx}) where F is a polynomial with no constant or linear terms. Local well-posedness was established in weighted Sobolev spaces by Kenig-Ponce-Vega. In this paper we prove local well-posedness in a translation invariant subspace of H^s by adapting the result of Marzuola-Metcalfe-Tataru on quasilinear Schrodinger equations.
This work is concerned about the Cauchy problem for the following generalized KdV- Burgers equation \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{l} \partial_tu+\partial_x^3u+L_pu+u\partial_xu=0, u(0,\,x)=u_0(x). \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $L_p$ is a dissipative multiplicator operator. Using Besov-Bourgain Spaces, we establish a bilinear estimate and following the framework developed in Molinet, L. & Vento, S. (2011) we prove sharp global well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $H^{-p/2}(I\!\!R)$ and sharp ill-posedness in $H^s(I\!\!R)$ when $s<-p/2$ with $p \geq 2$.
We prove the existence and stability of Cantor families of quasi-periodic, small amplitude solutions of quasi-linear (i.e. strongly nonlinear) autonomous Hamiltonian perturbations of KdV.
We consider the Cauchy problem for an equation of the form \partial_t+\partial_x^3)u=F(u,u_x,u_{xx}) where F is a polynomial with no constant or linear terms and no quadratic uu_{xx} term. For a polynomial nonlinearity with no quadratic terms, Kenig-Ponce-Vega proved local well-posedness in H^s for large s. In this paper we prove local well-posedness in low regularity Sobolev spaces and extend the result to certain quadratic nonlinearities. The result is based on spaces and estimates similar to those used by Marzuola-Metcalfe-Tataru for quasilinear Schrodinger equations.
In this paper we obtain the following stability result for periodic multi-solitons of the KdV equation: We prove that under any given semilinear Hamiltonian perturbation of small size $\varepsilon > 0$, a large class of periodic multi-solitons of the KdV equation, including ones of large amplitude, are orbitally stable for a time interval of length at least $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first stability result of such type for periodic multi-solitons of large size of an integrable PDE.
Well-posedness and ill-posedness of the fifth order modifed KdV equation

We address two pressing questions in the theory of the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation. First, we show the uniqueness of solutions to KdV that are merely bounded, without any further decay, regularity, periodicity, or almost periodicity assumptions. The second question, emphasized by Deift, regards whether almost periodic initial data leads to almost periodic solutions to KdV. Building on the new observation that this is false for the Airy equation, we construct an example of almost periodic initial data whose KdV evolution remains bounded, but fails to be almost periodic at a later time. Ou…
Near linear evolution in Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with periodic boundary conditions is established under the assumption of high frequency initial data. This result is obtained by the method of normal form reduction.
We study the well-posedness of the initial value problem for fully nonlinear evolution equations, $u_{t}=f[u],$ where $f$ may depend on up to the first three spatial derivatives of $u.$ We make three primary assumptions about the form of $f:$ a regularity assumption, a dispersivity assumption, and an assumption related to the strength of backwards diffusion. Because the third derivative of $u$ is present in the right-hand side and we effectively assume that the equation is dispersive, we say that these fully nonlinear evolution equations are of KdV-type. We prove the well-posedness of the init…
The soliton resolution for the focusing modified Korteweg-de vries (mKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method and its reformulation through $\bar{\partial}$-derivatives. From the view of stationary points, we give precise asymptotic formulas along trajectory $x=\textrm{v}t$ for any fixed $ \textrm{v} $. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in low regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques. As byproducts of our long-time asymptotics, we also o…
We prove local in time well-posedness for a class of quasilinear Hamiltonian KdV-type equations with periodic boundary conditions, more precisely we show existence, uniqueness and continuity of the solution map. We improve the previous result in \cite{Mietka}, generalising the considered class of equations and improving the regularity assumption on the initial data.
We complete the known results on the local Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces for the KdV-Burgers equation by proving that this equation is well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\R) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\R) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\R))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\R) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\R) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\R) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. As far as we know, this is the first result of this type for a dispersive-dissipative equation. The framework we develop here should be very us…
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the higher-order KdV-type equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+(-1)^{j+1}\partial_{x}^{2j+1}u + \frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2}) = 0,j\in N^{+},x\in\mathbf{T}= [0,2πλ) \end{eqnarray*} with low regularity data and $λ\geq 1$. Firstly, we show that the Cauchy problem for the periodic higher-order KdV equation is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $s\geq -j+\frac{1}{2},j\geq2.$ By using some new Strichartz estimate and some new function spaces, we also show that the Cauchy problem for the periodic higher-order KdV equation is ill-posed in …
In this paper we prove a wellposedness result of the KdV equation on the space of periodic pseudo-measures, also referred to as the Fourier Lebesgue space $\mathscr{F}\ell^{\infty}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$, where $\mathscr{F}\ell^{\infty}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ is endowed with the weak* topology. Actually, it holds on any weighted Fourier Lebesgue space $\mathscr{F}\ell^{s,\infty}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ with $-1/2 < s \le 0$ and improves on a wellposedness result of Bourgain for small Borel measures as initial data. A key ingredient of the proof is a characterization for a distribution $q$ in…
It is a matter of experience that nonlinear waves in dispersive media, propagating primarily in one direction, may appear periodic in small space and time scales, but their characteristics --- amplitude, phase, wave number, etc. --- slowly vary in large space and time scales. In the 1970's, Whitham developed an asymptotic (WKB) method to study the effects of small "modulations" on nonlinear periodic wave trains. Since then, there has been a great deal of work aiming at rigorously justifying the predictions from Whitham's formal theory. We discuss recent advances in the mathematical understandi…
