Studied here is the large-time behavior of solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation posed on the right half-line under the effect of a localized damping. Assuming as in \cite{linares-pazoto} that the damping is active on a set $(a_0,+\infty)$ with $a_0>0$, we establish the exponential decay of the solutions in the weighted spaces $L^2((x+1)^mdx)$ for $m\in \N ^*$ and $L^2(e^{2bx}dx)$ for $b>0$ by a Lyapunov approach. The decay of the spatial derivatives of the solution is also derived.
In this paper, we solve the problem of exponential stabilization for a class of cascade ODE-PDE system governed by a linear ordinary differential equation and a 1-d linearized Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) posed on a bounded interval. The control for the entire system acts on the left boundary with Dirichlet condition of the KdV equation whereas the KdV acts in the linear ODE by a Dirichlet connection. We use the socalled backstepping design in infinite dimension to convert the system under consideration into an exponentially stable cascade ODE-PDE system. Then, we use the invertibility of s…
The initial value problem for the Korteweg-deVries equation on the line is shown to be globally well-posed for rough data. In particular, we show global well-posedness for initial data in H^s({\mathbb{R}), -3/10<s.
In this work we study the initial value problem (IVP) for the fifth order KdV equations, \begin{align*} \partial_{t}u+\partial_{x}^{5}u+u^k\partial_{x}u=0,\text{} & \quad x,t\in \mathbb R, \quad k=1,2, \end{align*} in weighted Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb R)\cap L^2(\langle x \rangle^{2r}dx)$. We prove local and global results. In the case $k=2$ we point out the relation between decay and regularity of the solution of the IVP.
The long time behavior of solutions to the defocusing modified Korteweg-de vries (MKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou and its reformulation by Dieng and McLaughlin through $\overline{\partial}$-derivatives. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in lower regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques.
This article concerns the nonlinear Korteweg-de Vries equation with boundary time-delay feedback. Under appropriate assumption on the coefficients of the feedbacks (delayed or not), we first prove that this nonlinear infinite dimensional system is well-posed for small initial data. The main results of our study are two theorems stating the exponential stability of the nonlinear time delay system. Two different methods are employed: a Lyapunov functional approach (allowing to have an estimation on the decay rate, but with a restrictive assumption on the length of the spatial domain of the KdV e…
We demonstrate norm inflation for nonlinear nonlocal equations, which extend the Korteweg-de Vries equation to permit fractional dispersion, in the periodic and non-periodic settings. That is, an initial datum is smooth and arbitrarily small in a Sobolev space, but the solution becomes arbitrarily large in the Sobolev space after an arbitrarily short time.
We establish local well-posedness in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, with $s\geq -1/2$, for the initial value problem issues of the equation $$ u_t + u_{xxx}+ηLu + uu_x=0;\; x\in \mathbb{T},\; t\geq0, $$ where $η>0$, $(Lu)^{\wedge}(k)=-Φ(k)\hat{u}(k)$, $k\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $Φ\in \mathbb{R}$ is bounded above. Particular cases of this problem are the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation for $Φ(k)=-k^2$, the derivative Korteweg-de Vries-Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for $Φ(k)=k^2-k^4$, and the Ostrovsky-Stepanyams-Tsimring equation for $Φ(k)=|k|-|k|^3$.
We give a detailed description in 1-D the growth of Sobolev norms for time dependent linear generalized KdV-type equations on the circle. For most initial data, the growth of Sobolev norms is polynomial in time for fixed analytic potential with admissible growth. If the initial data are given in a fixed smaller function space with more strict admissible growth conditions for $V(x,t)$ , then the growth of previous Sobolev norms is at most logarithmic in time.
Studied here is the Kawahara equation, a fifth order Korteweg-de Vries type equation, with time-delayed internal feedback. Under suitable assumptions on the time delay coefficients we prove that solutions of this system are exponentially stable. First, considering a damping and delayed system, with some restriction of the spatial length of the domain, we prove that the Kawahara system is exponentially stable for $T> T_{\min}$. After that, introducing a more general delayed system, and by introducing suitable energies, we show using Lyapunov approach, that the energy of the Kawahara equation go…
This work deals with the local rapid exponential stabilization for a Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type introduced by J. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut. This is a model for the motion of small amplitude long waves on the surface of an ideal fluid. Here, we will consider the Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type posed on a finite domain, with homogeneous Dirichlet--Neumann boundary controls acting at the right end point of the interval. Our goal is to build suitable integral transformations to get a feedback control law that leads to the stabilization of the system. More precisely, we will prove that …
The present paper develops boundary output-feedback stabilization of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with sensors and an actuator located at different boundaries (anti collocated set-up) using backstepping method. The feedback control law and output injection gains are found using the backstepping method for linear KdV equation. The proof of stability is based on construction of a strict Lyapunov functional which includes the observer states. A numerical simulation is presented to validate the result.
We consider the Cauchy problem associated to the recently derived higher order hamiltonian model for unidirectional water waves and prove global existence for given data in the Sobolev space $H^s$, $s\geq 1$. We also prove an ill-posedness result by showing that the flow-map is not continuous if the given data has Sobolev regularity $s< 1$. The results obtained in this work are sharp.
The KdV-equation $u_t = -u_{xxx} + 6uu_x$ on the circle admits a global nonlinear Fourier transform, also known as Birkhoff map, linearizing the KdV flow. The regularity properties of $u$ are known to be closely related to the decay properties of the corresponding nonlinear Fourier coefficients. In this paper we obtain two-sided polynomial estimates of all integer Sobolev norms $||u||_m$, $m\ge 0$, in terms of the weighted norms of the nonlinear Fourier transformed, which are linear in the highest order. We further obtain quantitative estimates of the nonlinear Fourier transformed in arbitrary…
We prove well-posedness in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces $H^s$ at high regularity for a class of nonlinear higher-order dispersive equations generalizing the KdV hierarchy both on the line and on the torus.
Based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou for oscillatory Riemann--Hilbert problems and the Dbar approach, the long-time asymptotic behavior of solutions to the fifth-order modified Korteweg-de Vries equation on the line is studied in the case of initial conditions that belong to some weighted Sobolev spaces. Using techniques in Fourier analysis and the idea of $I$-method, we give its global well-posedness in lower regularity Sobolev spaces, and then obtain the asymptotic behavior in these spaces with weights.
In this note we report local well-posedness results for the Cauchy problems associated to generalized KdV type equations with dissipative perturbation for given data in the low regularity $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. The method of proof is based on the {\em contraction mapping principle} employed in some appropriate time weighted spaces.
In this work, we study the initial value problems associated to some linear perturbations of KdV equations. Our focus is in the well-posedness issues for initial data given in the $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. We derive bilinear estimate in a space with weight in the time variable and obtain sharp local well-posedness results.
Bourgain(1993) proved that the periodic modified KdV equation (mKdV) is locally well-posed in Sobolev spave H^s(T), s >= 1/2, by introducing new weighted Sobolev spaces X^s,b, where the uniqueness holds conditionally, namely in the intersection of C([0, T]; H^s) and X^s,b. In this paper, we establish unconditional well-posedness of mKdV in H^s(T), s >= 1/2, i.e. we in addition establish unconditional uniqueness in C([0, T]; H^s), s >= 1/2, of solutions to mKdV. We prove this result via differentiation by parts. For the endpoint case s = 1/2, we perform careful quinti- and septi-linear estimate…
We construct modified energies for the generalized KdV equation. As a consequence, we obtain quasi-invariance of the high order Gaussian measures along with $L^p$ regularity on the corresponding Radon-Nykodim density, as well as new bounds on the growth of the Sobolev norms of the solutions.
In this paper we prove that in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces, in the case of no bound states, the scattering map of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) on $\mathbb R$ is a perturbation of the Fourier transform by a regularizing operator. As an application of this result, we show that the difference of the KdV flow and the corresponding Airy flow is 1-smoothing.
The initial value problems for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and modified KdV (mKdV) equations under periodic and decaying boundary conditions are considered. These initial value problems are shown to be globally well-posed in all $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces $H^s$ where local well-posedness is presently known, apart from the $H^{1/4} (\R)$ endpoint for mKdV. The result for KdV relies on a new method for constructing almost conserved quantities using multilinear harmonic analysis and the available local-in-time theory. Miura's transformation is used to show that global well-posedness of modified K…
We consider the KdV equation on the Sobolev space of periodic distributions. We obtain estimates of the solution of the KdV in terms of action variables.
The initial-boundary value problem (ibvp) for the $m$-th order dispersion Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation on the half-line with rough data and solution in restricted Bourgain spaces is studied using the Fokas Unified Transform Method (UTM). Thus, this work advances the implementation of the Fokas method, used earlier for the KdV on the half-line with smooth data and solution in the classical Hadamard space, consisting of function that are continuous in time and Sobolev in the spatial variable, to the more general Bourgain spaces framework of dispersive equations with rough data on the half-li…
We prove special decay properties of solutions to the initial value problem associated to the $k$-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. These are related with persistence properties of the solution flow in weighted Sobolev spaces and with sharp unique continuation properties of solutions to this equation. As application of our method we also obtain results concerning the decay behavior of perturbations of the traveling wave solutions as well as results for solutions corresponding to special data.
We consider the IVP associated to the generalized KdV equation with low degree of non-linearity \begin{equation*} \partial_t u + \partial_x^3 u \pm |u|^α\partial_x u = 0,\; x,t \in \mathbb{R},\;α\in (0,1). \end{equation*} By using an argument similar to that introduced by Cazenave and Naumkin [2] we establish the local well-posedness for a class of data in an appropriate weighted Sobolev space. Also, we show that the solutions obtained satisfy the propagation of regularity principle proven in [3] in solutions of the $k$-generalized KdV equation.
In this paper we study weak continuity of the dynamical systems for the KdV equation in H^{-3/4}(R) and the modified KdV equation in H^{1/4}(R). This topic should have significant applications in the study of other properties of these equations such as finite time blow-up and asymptotic stability and instability of solitary waves. The spaces considered here are borderline Sobolev spaces for the corresponding equations from the viewpoint of the local well-posedness theory. We first use a variant of the method of [5] to prove weak continuity for the mKdV, and next use a similar result for a mKdV…
We prove global well-posedness of the subcritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (the mKdV and the gKdV with quartic power of nonlinearity) subject to an additive random perturbation. More precisely, we prove that if the driving noise is a cylindrical Wiener process on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and the covariance operator is Hilbert-Schmidt in an appropriate Sobolev space, then the solutions with $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ data are globally well-posed in $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. This extends results obtained by A. de Bouard and A. Debussche for the stochastic KdV equation.
In this paper we are concerned with the well-posedness and the exponential stabilization of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries Burgers equation, posed on the whole real line, under the effect of a damping term. Both problems are investigated when the exponent p in the nonlinear term ranges over the interval $[1,5)$. We first prove the global well-posedness in $H^s(R)$, for $0 \leq s \leq 3$ and $1 \leq p < 2$, and in $H^3(R)$, when $p \geq 2$. For $2 \leq p < 5$, we prove the existence of global solutions in the $L^2$-setting. Then, by using multiplier techniques combined with interpolation the…
In this paper we obtain global well-posedness in low order Sobolev spaces of higher order KdV type equations with dissipation. The result is optimal in the sense that the flow-map is not twice continuously differentiable in rougher spaces. The solution is shown to be smooth for positive times.
In this article we consider the Cauchy problem with large initial data for an equation of the form (\partial_t+\partial_x^3)u=F(u,u_x,u_{xx}) where F is a polynomial with no constant or linear terms. Local well-posedness was established in weighted Sobolev spaces by Kenig-Ponce-Vega. In this paper we prove local well-posedness in a translation invariant subspace of H^s by adapting the result of Marzuola-Metcalfe-Tataru on quasilinear Schrodinger equations.
We propose a model using the Korteweg-de Vries $(KdV)$ equation on a finite star-shaped network. We first prove the well-posedness of the system and give some regularity results. Then we prove that the energy of the solutions of the dissipative system decays exponentially to zero when the time tends to infinity. Lastly we show an exact boundary controllability result.
This work is concerned about the Cauchy problem for the following generalized KdV- Burgers equation \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{l} \partial_tu+\partial_x^3u+L_pu+u\partial_xu=0, u(0,\,x)=u_0(x). \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $L_p$ is a dissipative multiplicator operator. Using Besov-Bourgain Spaces, we establish a bilinear estimate and following the framework developed in Molinet, L. & Vento, S. (2011) we prove sharp global well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $H^{-p/2}(I\!\!R)$ and sharp ill-posedness in $H^s(I\!\!R)$ when $s<-p/2$ with $p \geq 2$.
We consider the Cauchy problem for an equation of the form \partial_t+\partial_x^3)u=F(u,u_x,u_{xx}) where F is a polynomial with no constant or linear terms and no quadratic uu_{xx} term. For a polynomial nonlinearity with no quadratic terms, Kenig-Ponce-Vega proved local well-posedness in H^s for large s. In this paper we prove local well-posedness in low regularity Sobolev spaces and extend the result to certain quadratic nonlinearities. The result is based on spaces and estimates similar to those used by Marzuola-Metcalfe-Tataru for quasilinear Schrodinger equations.
We consider the initial value problem of the fifth order modified KdV equation on the Sobolev spaces. \partial_t u - \partial_x^5u + c_1\partial_x^3(u^3) + c_2u\partial_x u\partial_x^2 u + c_3uu\partial_x^3 u =0, u(x,0)= u_0(x) where $ u:R\timesR \to R $ and $c_j$'s are real. We show the local well-posedness in H^s(R) for s \geq 3/4 via the contraction principle on $X^{s,b}$ space. Also, we show that the solution map from data to the solutions fails to be uniformly continuous below $H^{3/4}(R)$. The counter example is obtained by approximating the fifth order mKdV equation by the cubic NLS equ…
We study the well-posedness of the initial value problem for fully nonlinear evolution equations, $u_{t}=f[u],$ where $f$ may depend on up to the first three spatial derivatives of $u.$ We make three primary assumptions about the form of $f:$ a regularity assumption, a dispersivity assumption, and an assumption related to the strength of backwards diffusion. Because the third derivative of $u$ is present in the right-hand side and we effectively assume that the equation is dispersive, we say that these fully nonlinear evolution equations are of KdV-type. We prove the well-posedness of the init…
The soliton resolution for the focusing modified Korteweg-de vries (mKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method and its reformulation through $\bar{\partial}$-derivatives. From the view of stationary points, we give precise asymptotic formulas along trajectory $x=\textrm{v}t$ for any fixed $ \textrm{v} $. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in low regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques. As byproducts of our long-time asymptotics, we also o…
We complete the known results on the local Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces for the KdV-Burgers equation by proving that this equation is well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\R) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\R) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\R))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\R) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\R) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\R) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. As far as we know, this is the first result of this type for a dispersive-dissipative equation. The framework we develop here should be very us…
In this paper we prove a wellposedness result of the KdV equation on the space of periodic pseudo-measures, also referred to as the Fourier Lebesgue space $\mathscr{F}\ell^{\infty}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$, where $\mathscr{F}\ell^{\infty}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ is endowed with the weak* topology. Actually, it holds on any weighted Fourier Lebesgue space $\mathscr{F}\ell^{s,\infty}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ with $-1/2 < s \le 0$ and improves on a wellposedness result of Bourgain for small Borel measures as initial data. A key ingredient of the proof is a characterization for a distribution $q$ in…
The Cauchy problem for Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation on $\mathbb{R}^2$ is shown to be global well-posed for the initial date in $H^{s}$ provided $s>-\frac{1}{13}$. As conservation laws are invalid in Sobolev spaces below $L^2$, we construct an almost conserved quantity using multilinear correction term following the $I$-method introduced by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka and Tao. In contrast to KdV equation, the main difficulty is to handle the resonant interactions which are significant due to the multidimensional and multilinear setting of the problem. The proof relies upon the bilinear…
Small-amplitude waves in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) lattice with weakly anharmonic interaction potentials are described by the generalized Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Justification of the small-amplitude approximation is usually performed on the time scale, for which dynamics of the KdV equation is defined. We show how to extend justification analysis on longer time intervals provided dynamics of the generalized KdV equation is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces and either the Sobolev norms are globally bounded or they grow at most polynomially. The time intervals are extended respect…
In this paper we obtain a stabilization result for the Schrödinger equation under generic assumptions on the potential. Then we consider the Schrödinger equation with a potential which has a random time-dependent amplitude. We show that if the distribution of the amplitude is sufficiently non-degenerate, then any trajectory of system is almost surely non-bounded in Sobolev spaces.

We consider the Cauchy problem of the modified KdV equation (mKdV). Local well-posedness of this problem is obtained in modulation spaces $M^{1/4}_{2,q}(\mathbb{R})$ $(2\leq q\leq\infty)$. Moreover, we show that the data-to-solution map fails to be $C^3$ continuous in $M^{s}_{2,q}(\mathbb{R})$ when $s<1/4$. It is well-known that $H^{1/4}$ is a critical Sobolev space of mKdV so that it is well-posedness in $H^s$ for $s\geq 1/4$ and ill-posed (in the sense of uniform continuity) in $H^{s'}$ with $s'<1/4$. Noticing that $M^{1/4}_{2,q} \subset B^{1/q-1/4}_{2,q}$ is a sharp embedding and $H^{-1/4}\…
It is shown that white noise is an invariant measure for the Korteweg-deVries equation on $\mathbb T$. This is a consequence of recent results of Kappeler and Topalov establishing the well-posedness of the equation on appropriate negative Sobolev spaces, together with a result of Cambronero and McKean that white noise is the image under the Miura transform (Ricatti map) of the (weighted) Gibbs measure for the modified KdV equation, proven to be invariant for that equation by Bourgain.
We study the semiclassical limit of the (generalised) KdV equation, for initial data with Sobolev regularity, before the time of the gradient catastrophe of the limit conservation law. In particular, we show that in the semiclassical limit the solution of the KdV equation: i) converges in $H^s$ to the solution of the Hopf equation, provided the initial data belongs to $H^s$, ii) admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of the semiclassical parameter, if the initial data belongs to the Schwartz class. The result is also generalized to KdV equations with higher order linearities.
This paper is a continuation of the paper \emph{Low regularity Cauchy problem for the fifth-order modified KdV equations on $\mathbb{T}$}. In this paper, we consider the fifth-order equation in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy as following: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_t u - \partial_x^5 u + 30u^2\partial_x u + 20 u\partial_x u \partial_x^3u + 10u \partial_x^3 u = 0, \hspace{1em} (t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}, u(0,x) = u_0(x) \in H^s(\mathbb{T}) \end{cases}. \end{equation*} We prove the local well-posedness of the fifth-order KdV equation for low regularity Sobolev in…
This paper addresses the problem of global well-posedness of a coupled system of Korteweg-de Vries equations, derived by Majda and Biello in the context of nonlinear resonant interaction of Rossby waves, in a periodic setting in homogeneous Sobolev spaces $\dot H^s$, for $s\geq 0$. Our approach is based on a successive time-averaging method developed by Babin, Ilyin and Titi [1].
We study a class of higher-order KdV equations. We show that the associated initial value problem is well posed in weighted Besov and Sobolev spaces for small initial data. We also prove ill-posedness results when in H^s(\R), for any real s.
In this paper we develop and use successive averaging methods for explaining the regularization mechanism in the the periodic Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation in the homogeneous Sobolev spaces $\dot{H}^s$, for $s\ge0$. Specifically, we prove the global existence, uniqueness, and Lipschitz continuous dependence on the initial data of the solutions of the periodic KdV. For the case where the initial data is in $L_2$ we also show the Lipschitz continuous dependence of these solutions with respect to the initial data as maps from $\dot{H}^s$ to $\dot{H}^s$, for $s\in(-1,0]$.
