In a recent paper, Kenig, Ponce and Vega study the low regularity behavior of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS), focusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV), and complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. Using soliton and breather solutions, they demonstrate the lack of local well-posedness for these equations below their respective endpoint regularities. In this paper, we study the defocusing analogues of these equations, namely defocusing NLS, defocusing mKdV, and real KdV, all in one spatial dimension, for which suitable soliton and breather solutions are unavailable. We construct for each of these equations classes of modified scattering solutions, which exist globally in time, and are asymptotic to solutions of the corresponding linear equations up to explicit phase shifts. These solutions are used to demonstrate lack of local well-posedness in certain Sobolev spaces,in the sense that the dependence of solutions upon initial data fails to be uniformly continuous. In particular, we show that the mKdV flow is not uniformly continuous in the $L^2$ topology, despite the existence of global weak solutions at this regularity.
Finally, we investigate the KdV equation at the endpoint regularity $H^{-3/4}$, and construct solutions for both the real and complex KdV equations. The construction provides a nontrivial time interval $[-T,T]$ and a locally Lipschitz continuous map taking the initial data in $H^{-3/4}$ to a distributional solution $u \in C^0 ([-T,T]; $H^{-3/4})$ which is uniquely defined for all smooth data. The proof uses a generalized Miura transform to transfer the existing endpoint regularity theory for mKdV to KdV.
We establish global regularity for the logarithmically energy-supercritical wave equation $\Box u = u^5 \log(2+u^2)$ in three spatial dimensions for spherically symmetric initial data, by modifying an argument of Ginibre, Soffer and Velo \cite{gsv} for the energy-critical equation. This example demonstrates that critical regularity arguments can penetrate very slightly into the supercritical regime.
Recently, we have given the $l^2$ bijectivity for defocusing Ablowitz-Ladik systems in the discrete Sobolev space $l^{2,1}$ by inverse spectral method. Based on these results, the goal of this article is to investigate the long-time asymptotic property for the initial-valued problem of the defocusing Ablowitz-Ladik system with initial potential in lower regularity. The main idea is to perform proper deformations and analysis to the corespondent Riemann-Hilbert problem with the unit circle as the jump contour $Σ$. As a result, we show that when $|\frac{n}{2t}|\le 1<1$, the solution admits Zakha…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) on the real line with a special subclass of almost periodic functions as initial data. In particular, we prove global existence of solutions to NLS with limit periodic functions as initial data under some regularity assumption.
In this paper, we prove global well-posedness for low regularity data for the one dimensional quintic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We show that a unique solution exists for $u_{0} \in H^{s}(\mathbf{R})$, $s > {8/29}$. This improves the result in [13], which proved global well-posedness for $s > {1/3}$. The main new argument is that we obtain almost Morawetz estimates with improved error.
We obtain global well-posedness, scattering, uniform regularity, and global $L^6_{t,x}$ spacetime bounds for energy-space solutions to the defocusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $\R\times\R^4$. Our arguments closely follow those of Colliander-Keel-Staffilani-Takaoka-Tao, though our derivation of the frequency-localized interaction Morawetz estimate is somewhat simpler. As a consequence, our method yields a better bound on the $L^6_{t,x}$-norm.
We consider the modified Zakharov-Kuznetsov (mZK) equation in two space dimensions in both focusing and defocusing cases. Using the $I$-method, we prove the global well-posedness of the $H^s$ solutions for $s>\frac{3}{4}$ for any data in the defocusing case and under the assumption that the mass of the initial data is less than the mass of the ground state solution of $Δφ- φ+ φ^3 = 0$ in the focusing case. This improves the global well-posedness result of Linares and Pastor [20].

We prove that the solution map, associated to the quintic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation, exhibits the norm inflation phenomenon at every point in the Sobolev spaces of super-critical regularity. Indeed, we prove this result separately in the cases of negative and of positive regularity. In the negative regularity case, we prove the result for both the defocusing and focusing equations: in the one dimensional case, the associated solution map exhibits norm inflation in Sobolev spaces of super-critical regularity (including the critical index); in the higher dimensional case, the s…
The defocusing NLS-equation $\mathrm{i} u_t = -u_{xx} + 2|u|^2u$ on the circle admits a global nonlinear Fourier transform, also known as Birkhoff map, linearising the NLS-flow. The regularity properties of $u$ are known to be closely related to the decay properties of the corresponding nonlinear Fourier coefficients. In this paper we quantify this relationship by providing two sided polynomial estimates of all integer Sobolev norms $\|u\|_m$, $m\ge 0$, in terms of the weighted norms of the nonlinear Fourier transformed.
We prove global existence and stability of solution to the mass-critical stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $d=1$ at $L^2$ regularity. Our construction starts with the existence of solution to the truncated subcritical problem. With the presence of truncation, we construct the solution to the critical equation as the limit of subcritical solutions. We then obtain uniform bounds on the solutions to the truncated critical problems that allow us to remove truncation in the limit.
We prove global well-posedness for the L^{2}-critical cubic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on R^{2} with data u_{0} \in H^{s}(R^{2}) for s > {1/3}.
We prove global well-posedness for low regularity data for the one dimensional quintic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Precisely we show that a unique and global solution exists for initial data in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb R)$ for any $s>{1/3}$. This improves the result in \cite{tz}, where global well-posedness was established for any $s>{4/9}$. We use the $I$-method to take advantage of the conservation laws of the equation. The new ingredient in our proof is an interaction Morawetz estimate for the smoothed out solution $Iu$. As a byproduct of our proof we also obtain that…
We consider the global regularity problem for defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger systems $$ i \partial_t + Δu = (\nabla_{{\bf R}^m} F)(u) + G $$ on Galilean spacetime ${\bf R} \times {\bf R}^d$, where the field $u\colon {\bf R}^{1+d} \to {\bf C}^m$ is vector-valued, $F\colon {\bf C}^m \to {\bf R}$ is a smooth potential which is positive, phase-rotation-invariant, and homogeneous of order $p+1$ outside of the unit ball for some exponent $p >1$, and $G: {\bf R} \times {\bf R}^d \to {\bf C}^m$ is a smooth, compactly supported forcing term. This generalises the scalar defocusing nonlinear Schrödinge…
In this paper, we study the ill-posdness of the Cauchy problem for semilinear wave equation with very low regularity, where the nonlinear term depends on $u$ and $\partial_t u$. We prove a ill-posedness result for the "defocusing" case, and give an alternative proof for the supercritical "focusing" case, which improves our previous result in Chin. Ann. Math. Ser. B 26(3), 361-378, 2005.
We study the transport properties of the Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces under the dynamics of the two-dimensional defocusing cubic nonlinear wave equation (NLW). Under some regularity condition, we prove quasi-invariance of the mean-zero Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces for the NLW dynamics. We achieve this goal by introducing a simultaneous renormalization on the energy functional and its time derivative and establishing a renormalized energy estimate in the probabilistic setting.
In this paper, we study the defocusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations $$ i\partial_t u + Δu = |u|^{\frac{4}{d-2}} u. $$ When $d=3,4$, we prove the almost sure scattering for the equations with non-radial data in $H_x^s$ for any $s\in\mathbb{R}$. In particular, our result does not rely on any spherical symmetry, size or regularity restrictions.
We consider the Cauchy problem of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on $\mathbb R^d$, $d \geq 3$, with random initial data and prove almost sure well-posedness results below the scaling critical regularity $s_\text{crit} = \frac{d-2}{2}$. More precisely, given a function on $\mathbb R^d$, we introduce a randomization adapted to the Wiener decomposition, and, intrinsically, to the so-called modulation spaces. Our goal in this paper is three-fold. (i) We prove almost sure local well-posedness of the cubic NLS below the scaling critical regularity along with small data global existen…
In this paper, we prove global well-posedness and scattering of the Cauchy problem for the elliptic-elliptic Davey-Stewartson system (eeDS) for initial data $u_{0}\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ in the defocusing case and for $u_{0}\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ with mass below that of the ground state in the focusing case. This result resolves the large data problem at the scaling-critical regularity left open by Ghidaglia and Saut in their work initiating the mathematical study of the Cauchy problem for the system. Our proof uses the concentration compactness/rigidity road map of Kenig and Merle toge…
We prove that the renormalized defocusing mKdV equation on the circle is locally in time $C^{0}$-wellposed on the Fourier Lebesgue space ${\mathcal{F}\ell}^p$ for any $2 < p < \infty$. The result implies that the defocusing mKdV equation itself is illposed on these spaces since the renormalizing phase factor becomes infinite. The proof is based on the fact that the mKdV equation is an integrable PDE whose Hamiltonian is in the NLS hierarchy. A key ingredient is a novel way of representing the bi-infinite sequence of frequencies of the renormalized defocusing mKdV equation, allowing to analytic…
We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with defocusing, smooth, nonlinearity. Below the critical Sobolev regularity, it is known that the Cauchy problem is ill-posed. We show that this is even worse: there is a loss of regularity, in the same spirit as the result due to G.Lebeau in the case of the wave equation. We use an isotropic change of variable, which reduces the problem to a super-critical WKB analysis. For super-cubic, smooth nonlinearity, this analysis is new, and relies on the introduction of a modulated energy functional a la Brenier.
In this paper we study the cubic fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) on the torus and on the real line. Combining the normal form and the restricted norm methods we prove that the nonlinear part of the solution is smoother than the initial data. Our method applies to both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. In the case of full dispersion (NLS) and on the torus, the gain is a full derivative, while on the real line we get a derivative smoothing with an $ε$ loss. Our result lowers the regularity requirement of a recent theorem of Kappeler et al. on the periodic defocusing cubic N…
We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with initial data in $\mathcal{Z}^s_p(\mathbb{R}^d)=\dot{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^d)\cap L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$, where $0<s<\min\{d/2,1\}$ and $2<p<2d/(d-2s)$. After showing that the linear Schrödinger group is well-defined in this space, we prove local well-posedness in the whole range of parameters $s$ and $p$. The precise properties of the solution depend on the relation between the power of the nonlinearity and the integrability $p$. Finally, we present a global existence result for the defocusing cubic equation in dimension three for initial data with infini…
The nonlinear wave and Schrodinger equations on Euclidean space of any dimension, with general power nonlinearity and with both the focusing and defocusing signs, are proved to be ill-posed in the Sobolev space of index s whenever the exponent s is lower than that predicted by scaling or Galilean invariances, or when the regularity is too low to support distributional solutions. This extends previous work of the authors, which treated the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. In the defocusing case soliton or blowup examples are unavailable, and a proof of ill-posedness require…
We consider the global regularity problem for defocusing nonlinear wave systems $$ \Box u = (\nabla_{{\bf R}^m} F)(u) $$ on Minkowski spacetime ${\bf R}^{1+d}$ with d'Alambertian $\Box := -\partial_t^2 + \sum_{i=1}^d \partial_{x_i}^2$, the field $u: {\bf R}^{1+d} \to {\bf R}^m$ is vector-valued, and $F: {\bf R}^m \to {\bf R}$ is a smooth potential which is positive and homogeneous of order $p+1$ outside of the unit ball, for some $p >1$. This generalises the scalar defocusing nonlinear wave (NLW) equation, in which $m=1$ and $F(v) = \frac{1}{p+1} |v|^{p+1}$. It is well known that in the energy…
In this paper, we will obtain a rigorous derivation of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the three-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^3$ from the many-body limit of interacting bosonic systems. This type of result was previously obtained on $\mathbb{R}^3$ in the work of Erdős, Schlein, and Yau \cite{ESY2,ESY3,ESY4,ESY5}, and on $\mathbb{T}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^2$ in the work of Kirkpatrick, Schlein, and Staffilani \cite{KSS}. Our proof relies on an unconditional uniqueness result for the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy at the level of regularity $α=1$, which is proved by using a modif…
In this paper we study the local and global regularity properties of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the half line with rough initial data. These properties include local and global wellposedness results, local and global smoothing results and the behavior of higher order Sobolev norms of the solutions. In particular, we prove that the nonlinear part of the cubic NLS on the half line is smoother than the initial data. The gain in regularity coincides with the gain that was observed for the periodic cubic NLS \cite{et2} and the cubic NLS on the line \cite{erin}. We also prove …
The long time behavior of solutions to the defocusing modified Korteweg-de vries (MKdV) equation is established for initial conditions in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou and its reformulation by Dieng and McLaughlin through $\overline{\partial}$-derivatives. To extend the asymptotics to solutions with initial data in lower regularity spaces, we apply a global approximation via PDE techniques.
We prove the global well-posedness and scattering for the defocusing $H^{\frac12}$-subcritical (that is, $2<γ<3$) Hartree equation with low regularity data in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 3$. Precisely, we show that a unique and global solution exists for initial data in the Sobolev space $H^s\big(\mathbb{R}^d\big)$ with $s>4(γ-2)/(3γ-4)$, which also scatters in both time directions. This improves the result in \cite{ChHKY}, where the global well-posedness was established for any $s>\max\big(1/2,4(γ-2)/(3γ-4)\big)$. The new ingredients in our proof are that we make use of an interaction Morawetz est…
We consider the mass-subcritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in all space dimensions with focusing or defocusing nonlinearity. For such equations with critical regularity $s_c\in(\max\{-1,-\frac{d}{2}\},0)$, we prove that any solution satisfying $\|\, |x|^{|s_c|}e^{-itΔ} u\|_{L_t^\infty L_x^2} <\infty$ on its maximal interval of existence must be global and scatter.
We investigate Strichartz estimates for the nonlinear beam equation with initial data $f\in\dot{H}^s, g\in\dot{H}^{s-2}$ and $f\in H^s, g\in H^{s-2}$. We extend results of H. Lindblad and C. D.Sogge [10] and T. Cazenave and F. B. Weissler [4] to nonlinear beam equations to determine the minimal regularity that is needed to prove well-posedness and scattering results with low regularity data. Finally, we also use small dispersion analysis of M. Christ, J. Colliander and T. Tao [2] to prove the nonlinear beam equation is ill-posed in defocusing case $ω=-1$ when $ 0<s<s_c=\frac{n}{2}-\frac{4}{κ-1…
For the semi-classical limit of the cubic, defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation with an external potential, we explain the notion of criticality before a caustic is formed. In the sub-critical and critical cases, we justify the WKB approximation. In the super-critical case, the WKB analysis provides a new phenomenon for the (classical) cubic, defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which can be compared to the loss of regularity established for the nonlinear wave equation by G. Lebeau. We also show some instabilities at the semi-classical level.
In this paper, we consider the wave equation in 3-dimensional space with an energy-subcritical nonlinearity, either in the focusing or defocusing case. We show that any radial solution of the equation which is bounded in the critical Sobolev space is globally defined in time and scatters. The proof depends on the compactness/rigidity argument, decay estimates for radial, "compact" solutions, gain of regularity arguments and the "channel of energy" method.
We consider the defocusing nonlinear wave equation of power-type on $\mathbb{R}^3$. We establish an almost sure global existence result with respect to a suitable randomization of the initial data. In particular, this provides examples of initial data of super-critical regularity which lead to global solutions. The proof is based upon Bourgain's high-low frequency decomposition and improved averaging effects for the free evolution of the randomized initial data.
We prove the local well-posedness for the nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation (NL4S) in Sobolev spaces. We also studied the regularity of solutions in the sub-critical case. A direct consequence of this regularity is the global well-posedness above mass and energy spaces under some assumptions. Finally, we show the ill-posedness for (NL4S) in some cases of the super-critical range.
We show that the wave map equation in $\R^{1+1}$ is in general ill-posed in the critical space $\dot H^{1/2}$, and the Besov space $\dot B^{1/2,1}_2$. The problem is attributed to the bad behaviour of the one-dimensional bilinear expression $D^{-1}(f Dg)$ in these spaces.
We consider a nonlinear $L^2$-critical nonlinear Dirac equation in one space dimension known as the Thirring model. Global well-posedness in $L^2$ for this equation was proved by Candy. Here we prove that the equation is ill posed in $L^p$ for $1 \le p < 2$, and in the massless case also in $H^s$ with $s < 0$.
We establish a new a priori bound for $ L^2 $-bounded sequences of solutions to the mKdV equations on the torus. This first enable us to construct weak solutions in $ L^2$ for this equation and to check that the "solutions" constructed by Kappeler and Topalov in the defocusing case satisfy the equation in some weak sense. In a second time, we prove that the solution-map associated with the mKdV and the KdV equation are discontinuous for the $ H^s(\T) $ topology for respectively $ s<0$ and $ s<-1$. These last results are sharp.
We explore systematically a rigorous theory of the inverse scattering transforms with matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems for both focusing and defocusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations with non-zero boundary conditions (NZBCs) at infinity. Using a suitable uniformization variable, the direct and inverse scattering problems are proposed on a complex plane instead of a two-sheeted Riemann surface. For the direct scattering problem, the analyticities, symmetries and asymptotic behaviors of the Jost solutions and scattering matrix, and discrete spectra are established. The inverse proble…
We consider energy sub-critical defocusing nonlinear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^3$ and establish the existence of unique global solutions almost surely with respect to a unit-scale randomization of the initial data on Euclidean space. In particular, we provide examples of initial data at super-critical regularities which lead to unique global solutions. The proof is based on probabilistic growth estimates for a new modified energy functional. This work improves upon the authors' previous results in [25] by significantly lowering the regularity threshold and strengthening the notion of uniqu…

We investigate the cubic defocusing fourth order Schrödinger equation $iu_t + Δ^2u + |u|^2u=0$ in arbitrary space dimension $\mathbb{R}^n$ for arbitrary $H^2$ initial data. We prove that the equation is globally well-posed when $n \le 8$ and ill-posed when $n \ge 9$, with the additional important information that scattering holds true when $5 \le n \le 8$.
In this paper we present a method to study global regularity properties of solutions of large-data critical Schrodinger equations on certain noncompact Riemannian manifolds. We rely on concentration compactness arguments and a global Morawetz inequality adapted to the geometry of the manifold (in other words we adapt the method of Kenig-Merle to the variable coefficient case), and a good understanding of the corresponding Euclidean problem (in our case the main theorem of Colliander-Keel-Staffilani-Takaoka-Tao). As an application we prove global well-posedness and scattering in $H^1$ for the e…
We discuss recent advances in the regularity problem of a variety of fluid equations and systems. The purpose is to illustrate the advantage of harmonic analysis techniques in obtaining sharper conditional regularity results when compared to classical energy methods.
In this paper we discuss quantitative (pointwise) decay estimates for solutions to the 3D cubic defocusing Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with various initial data, deterministic and random. We show that nonlinear solutions enjoy the same decay rate as the linear ones. The regularity assumption on the initial data is much lower than in previous results (see \cite{fan2021decay} and the references therein) and moreover we quantify the decay, which is another novelty of this work. Furthermore, we show that the (physical) randomization of the initial data can be used to replace the $L^1$-data assu…
