For the semi-classical limit of the cubic, defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation with an external potential, we explain the notion of criticality before a caustic is formed. In the sub-critical and critical cases, we justify the WKB approximation. In the super-critical case, the WKB analysis provides a new phenomenon for the (classical) cubic, defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which can be compared to the loss of regularity established for the nonlinear wave equation by G. Lebeau. We also show some instabilities at the semi-classical level.
We consider the semiclassical Schrödinger-Poisson system with a special initial data of WKB type such that the solution of the limiting hydrodynamical equation becomes time-global in dimensions at least three. We give an example of such initial data in the focusing case via the analysis of the compressible Euler-Poisson equations. This example is a large data with radial symmetry, and is beyond the reach of the previous results because the phase part decays too slowly. Extending previous results in this direction, we justify the WKB approximation of the solution with this data for an arbitrari…
We consider the Schrödinger-Poisson system in the two-dimensional whole space. A new formula of solutions to the Poisson equation is used. Although the potential term solving the Poisson equation may grow at the spatial infinity, we show the unique existence of a time-local solution for data in the Sobolev spaces by an analysis of a quantum hydrodynamical system via a modified Madelung transform. This method has been used to justify the WKB approximation of solutions to several classes of nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the semiclassical limit.
We consider 3d Schrodinger operator with long-range potential that has short-range radial derivative. The long-time asymptotics of non-stationary problem is studied and existence of modified wave operators is proved. It turns out, the standard WKB correction should be replaced by the solution to certain evolution equation.
We consider the semi-classical limit of nonlinear Schrodinger equations in the presence of both a polynomial nonlinearity and thederivative in space of a polynomial nonlinearity. By working in a class of analytic initial data, we do not have to assume any hyperbolicstructure on the (limiting) phase/amplitude system. The solution, its approximation, and the error estimates are considered in time dependent analyticregularity.
We justify the WKB analysis for the semiclassical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a subquadratic potential. This concerns subcritical, critical, and supercritical cases as far as the geometrical optics method is concerned. In the supercritical case, this extends a previous result by E. Grenier; we also have to restrict to nonlinearities which are defocusing and cubic at the origin, but besides subquadratic potentials, we consider initial phases which may be unbounded. For this, we construct solutions for some compressible Euler equations with unbounded source term and unbounded initial vel…
We justify the WKB analysis for generalized nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations (NLS), including the hyperbolic NLS and the Davey-Stewartson II system. Since the leading order system in this analysis is not hyperbolic, we work with analytic regularity, with a radius of analyticity decaying with time, in order to obtain better energy estimates. This provides qualitative information regarding equations for which global well-posedness in Sobolev spaces is widely open.
In this paper we are interested in constructing WKB approximations for the non linear cubic Schrödinger equation on a Riemannian surface which has a stable geodesic. These approximate solutions will lead to some instability properties of the equation.
We are interested in a WKB analysis of the Logarithmic Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation with "Riemann-like" variables in an analytic framework in semiclassical regime. We show that the Cauchy problem is locally well posed uniformly in the semiclassical constant and that the semiclassical limit can be performed. In particular, our framework is not only compatible with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with logarithmic nonlinearity, but also allows initial data (and solutions) which can converge to $0$ at infinity.
This paper focuses on the destabilizing role of resonances in high-frequency WKB solutions. Specifically, we study higher-order resonances associated with higher-order harmonics generated by nonlinearities. We give examples of systems and solutions for which such resonances generate instantaneous instabilities, even though the equations linearized around the leading WKB terms are initially stable, meaning in particular that the key destabilizing terms are not present in the data.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of propagation properties for the solutions of a one-dimensional non-local Schrödinger equation involving the fractional Laplace operator $(-d_x^2)^s$, $s\in(0,1)$. We adopt a classical WKB approach and we provide a systematic procedure for building a suitable ansatz for the solutions to the problem. In this way, we can obtain quasi-solutions which are localized along the rays of geometric optics, whose group velocity can be computed explicitly in terms of the parameter $s$. Our results are then confirmed by numerical simulations, based on a finite element…
We review some results concerning the semi-classical limit for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, with or without an external potential. We consider initial data which are either of the WKB type, or very concentrated as the semi-classical parameter goes to zero. We sketch the techniques used according to various frameworks, and point out some open problems.
In this paper we consider supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in an analytic Riemannian manifold $(M^d,g)$, where the metric $g$ is analytic. Using an analytic WKB method, we are able to construct an Ansatz for the semiclassical equation for times independent of the small parameter. These approximate solutions will help to show two different types of instabilities. The first is in the energy space, and the second is an immediate loss of regularity in higher Sobolev norms.
This paper provides an elementary proof of the classical limit of the Schrödinger equation with WKB type initial data and over arbitrary long finite time intervals. We use only the stationary phase method and the Laptev-Sigal simple and elegant construction of a parametrix for Schrödinger type equations [A. Laptev, I. Sigal, Review of Math. Phys. 12 (2000), 749-766]. We also explain in detail how the phase shifts across caustics obtained when using the Laptev-Sigal parametrix are related to the Maslov index.
We prove some instability phenomena for semi-classical (linear or) nonlinear Schrodinger equations. For some perturbations of the data, we show that for very small times, we can neglect the Laplacian, and the mechanism is the same as for the corresponding ordinary differential equation. Our approach allows smaller perturbations of the data, where the instability occurs for times such that the problem cannot be reduced to the study of an o.d.e.
We consider the small time semi-classical limit for nonlinear Schrodinger equations with defocusing, smooth, nonlinearity. For a super-cubic nonlinearity, the limiting system is not directly hyperbolic, due to the presence of vacuum. To overcome this issue, we introduce new unknown functions, which are defined nonlinearly in terms of the wave function itself. This approach provides a local version of the modulated energy functional introduced by Y.Brenier. The system we obtain is hyperbolic symmetric, and the justification of WKB analysis follows.
In the framework of toroidal Pseudodifferential operators on the flat torus $\Bbb T^n := (\Bbb R / 2π\Bbb Z)^n$ we begin by proving the closure under composition for the class of Weyl operators $\mathrm{Op}^w_\hbar(b)$ with simbols $b \in S^m (\mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n)$. Subsequently, we consider $\mathrm{Op}^w_\hbar(H)$ when $H=\frac{1}{2} |η|^2 + V(x)$ where $V \in C^\infty (\Bbb T^n;\Bbb R)$ and we exhibit the toroidal version of the equation for the Wigner transform of the solution of the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, we prove the convergence (in a weak sense) of the Wigner trans…
We study strong instability (instability by blowup) of standing wave solutions for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an attractive delta potential and $L^2$-supercritical power nonlinearity in one space dimension. We also compare our sufficient condition on strong instability with some known results on orbital instability.
We study the orbital instability of solitary waves for a generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We give sufficient conditions for instability of a two-parameter family of solitary waves in a degenerate case.
We study a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with cubic interactions in one space dimension. The orbital stability and instability of semitrivial standing wave solutions are studied for both non-degenerate and degenerate cases.
We study the instability of standing waves for nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Under a general assumption on nonlinearity, we prove that linear instability implies orbital instability in any dimension. For that purpose, we establish a Strichartz type estimate for the propagator generated by the linearized operator around standing wave.
We study the instability of bound states for abstract nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We prove a new instability result for a borderline case between stability and instability. We also reprove some known results in a unified way.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem for an inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrodinger equation with exponential growth nonlinearity and harmonic potential in two space dimensions. We prove global well-posedness, existence of the associated ground state and instability of the standing wave.
In this note we give an alternative, shorter proof of the classical result of Berestycki and Cazenave on the instability by blow-up for the standing waves of some nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
A concept of semiclassically concentrated solutions is formulated for the multidimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with an external field. These solutions are considered as multidimensional solitary waves. The center of mass of such a solution is shown to move along with the bicharacteristics of the basic symbol of the corresponding linear Schrödinger equation. The leading term of the asymptotic WKB-solution is constructed for the multidimensional NLSE. Special cases are considered for the standard one-dimensional NLSE and for NLSE in cylindrical coordinates.
We study the instability of standing wave solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a one-dimensional harmonic potential in dimension $N\ge 2$. We prove that if the nonlinearity is $L^2$-critical or supercritical in dimension $N-1$, then any ground states are strongly unstable by blowup.
It is shown how to compute the instability rates for the double-periodic solutions to the cubic NLS (nonlinear Schrodinger) equation by using the Lax linear equations. The wave function modulus of the double-periodic solutions is periodic both in space and time coordinates; such solutions generalize the standing waves which have the time-independent and space-periodic wave function modulus. Similar to other waves in the NLS equation, the double-periodic solutions are spectrally unstable and this instability is related to the bands of the Lax spectrum outside the imaginary axis. A simple numeri…
In this paper we consider the transverse instability for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a linear potential on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}_L$, where $2πL$ is the period of the torus $\mathbb{T}_L$. Rose and Weinstein showed the existence of a stable standing wave for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a linear potential. We regard the standing wave of nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}$ as a line standing wave of nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}_L$. We show the stability of line standing waves for all $L>0$.
In the present paper, we establish the existence and orbital instability results of cnoidal periodic waves for the quintic Klein-Gordon and nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The spectral analysis for the corresponding linearized operator is established by using the Floquet theory. The orbital instability is determined by applying an abstract result due to Shatah and Strauss.
One of important problems in mathematical physics concerns derivation of point dynamics from field equations. The most common approach to this problem is based on WKB method. Here we describe a different method based on the concept of trajectory of concentration. When we applied this method to nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation, we derived relativistic Newton's law and Einstein's formula for inertial mass. Here we apply the same approach to nonlinear Schrodinger equation and derive non-relativistic Newton's law for the trajectory of concentration.
We study a class of quasi-linear Schrödinger equations arising in the theory of superfluid film in plasma physics. First, using gauge transforms and a derivation process we solve, under some regularity assumptions, the Cauchy problem. Then, by means of variational methods, we study the existence, the orbital stability and instability of standing waves which minimize some associated energy.
We show that space-time resonances induce high-frequency Raman instabilities in the two-fluid Euler-Maxwell system describing laser-plasma interactions. A consequence is that the Zakharov WKB approximation to Euler-Maxwell is unstable for non-zero group velocities. A key step in the proof is the reformulation of the set of resonant frequencies as the locus of weak hyperbolicity for linearized equations around the WKB solution. We analyze those linearized equations with the symbolic flow method. Due to large transverse variations in the WKB profile, the equation satisfied by the symbolic flow a…
We study the inviscid limit problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation on a half-plane with a Navier boundary condition depending on the viscosity. On one hand, we prove the $L^2$ convergence of Leray solutions to the solution of the Euler equation. On the other hand, we show the nonlinear instability of WKB expansions in the stronger $L^{\infty}$ and $\dot{H}^s$ (s>1) norms.
We study the instability of standing-wave solutions $e^{iωt}ϕ_ω(x)$ to the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$iϕ_t=-\triangleϕ+|x|^2ϕ-|x|^b|ϕ|^{p-1}ϕ, \qquad \in\mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $ b > 0 $ and $ ϕ_ω $ is a ground-state solution. The results of the instability of standing-wave solutions reveal a balance between the frequency $ω$ of wave and the power of nonlinearity $p $ for any fixed $ b > 0. $
In this note we prove the instability by blow-up of the ground state solutions for a class of fourth order Schr\" odinger equations. This extends the first rigorous results on blowing-up solutions for the biharmonic NLS due to Boulenger and Lenzmann \cite{BoLe} and confirm numerical conjectures from \cite{BaFi, BaFiMa1, BaFiMa, FiIlPa}.
We study strong instability of standing waves $e^{iωt} ϕ_ω(x)$ for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with $L^2$-supercritical nonlinearity and a harmonic potential, where $ϕ_ω$ is a ground state of the corresponding stationary problem. We prove that $e^{iωt} ϕ_ω(x)$ is strongly unstable if $\partial_λ^2 E(ϕ_ω^λ) |_{λ=1}\le 0$, where $E$ is the energy and $v^λ(x)=λ^{N/2} v(λx)$ is the $L^2$-invariant scaling.
We study the stability/instability of the subsonic travelling waves of the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation in dimension one. Our aim is to propose several methods for showing instability (use of the Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss theory, proof of existence of an unstable eigenvalue via an Evans function) or stability. For the later, we show how to construct in a systematic way a Liapounov functional for which the travelling wave is a local minimizer. These approaches allow to give a complete stability/instability analysis in the energy space including the critical case of the kink solution. We also t…
We study the flow map associated to the cubic Schrodinger equation in space dimension at least three. We consider initial data of arbitrary size in $H^s$, where $0<s<s_c$, $s_c$ the critical index, and perturbations in $H^\si$, where $\si<s_c$ is independent of $s$. We show an instability mechanism in some Sobolev spaces of order smaller than $s$. The analysis relies on two features of super-critical geometric optics: creation of oscillation, and ghost effect.
We show the strong instability of radial ground state standing waves for the focusing $L^2$-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse-square potential \[ i\partial_t u + Δu + c|x|^{-2} u = - |u|^α u, \quad (t,x)\in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d\geq 3$, $u: \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^d \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$, $c\ne 0$ satisfies $c<λ(d):=\left(\frac{d-2}{2}\right)^2$ and $\frac{4}{d} <α<\frac{4}{d-2}$. This result extends a recent result of Bensouilah-Dinh-Zhu [{\it On stability and instability of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse…
We study the energy cascade problematic for some nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the torus $\T^2$ in terms of the growth of Sobolev norms. We define the notion of long-time strong instability and establish its connection to the existence of unbounded Sobolev orbits. This connection is then explored for a family of cubic Schrödinger nonlinearities that are equal or closely related to the standard polynomial one $|u|^2u$. Most notably, we prove the existence of unbounded Sobolev orbits for a family of Hamiltonian cubic nonlinearities that includes the resonant cubic NLS equation (a.k.a. the f…
We study the strong instability of ground-state standing waves $e^{iωt}ϕ_ω(x)$ for $N$-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations with double power nonlinearity. One is $L^2$-subcritical, and the other is $L^2$-supercritical. The strong instability of standing waves with positive energy was proven by Ohta and Yamaguchi (2015). In this paper, we improve the previous result, that is, we prove that if $\partial_λ^2S_ω(ϕ_ω^λ)|_{λ=1}\le0$, the standing wave is strongly unstable, where $S_ω$ is the action, and $ϕ_ω^λ(x)\mathrel{\mathop:}=λ^{N/2}ϕ_ω(λx)$ is the $L^2$-invariant scaling.
We study existence and stability properties of ground-state standing waves for two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a point interaction and a focusing power nonlinearity. The Schrödinger operator with a point interaction describes a one-parameter family of self-adjoint realizations of the Laplacian with delta-like perturbation. The perturbed Laplace operator always has a unique simple negative eigenvalue. We prove that if the frequency of the standing wave is close to the negative eigenvalue, it is stable. Moreover, if the frequency is sufficiently large, we have the stability i…
Using the Fermi Golden Rule analysis developed in several results by the first author, we prove asymptotic stability of asymmetric nonlinear bound states bifurcating from linear bound states for a quintic nonlinear Schrödinger operator with symmetric potential. This goes in the direction of proving that the approximate periodic solutions of the NLS shadowed in a recent work of the second author with Michael Weinstein do not persist for the full NLS.
We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with defocusing, smooth, nonlinearity. Below the critical Sobolev regularity, it is known that the Cauchy problem is ill-posed. We show that this is even worse: there is a loss of regularity, in the same spirit as the result due to G.Lebeau in the case of the wave equation. We use an isotropic change of variable, which reduces the problem to a super-critical WKB analysis. For super-cubic, smooth nonlinearity, this analysis is new, and relies on the introduction of a modulated energy functional a la Brenier.
We consider the quadratic and cubic KP - I and NLS models in $1+2$ dimensions with periodic boundary conditions. We show that the spatially periodic travelling waves (with period $K$) in the form $u(t,x,y)=\vp(x-c t)$ are spectrally and linearly unstable, when the perturbations are taken to be with the same period. This strong instability implies other instabilities considered recently - for example with respect to perturbations with periods $nK, n=2, 3, ...$ or bounded perturbations.
We study the strong instability of standing waves $e^{iωt}ϕ_ω(x)$ for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with an $L^2$-supercritical nonlinearity and an attractive inverse power potential, where $ω\in\mathbb{R}$ is a frequency, and $ϕ_ω\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is a ground state of the corresponding stationary equation. Recently, for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a harmonic potential, Ohta (2018) proved that if $\partial_λ^2S_ω(ϕ_ω^λ)|_{λ=1}\le0$, then the standing wave is strongly unstable, where $S_ω$ is the action, and $ϕ_ω^λ(x)\mathrel{\mathop:}=λ^{N/2}ϕ_ω(λx)$ is the scaling, which does …
We introduce a new notion of linear stability for standing waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) which requires not only that the spectrum of the linearization be real, but also that the generalized kernel be not degenerate and that the signature of all the positive eigenvalues be positive. We prove that excited states of the NLS are not linearly stable in this more restrictive sense. We then give a partial proof that this more restrictive notion of linear stability is a necessary condition to have orbital stability.
We study the existence and orbital stability/instability of periodic standing wave solutions for the Klein-Gordon-Schrödinger system with Yukawa and cubic interactions. We prove the existence of periodic waves depending on the Jacobian elliptic functions. For one hand, the approach used to obtain the stability results is the classical Grillakis, Shatah and Strauss theory in the periodic context. On the other hand, to show the instability results we employ a general criterium introduced by Grillakis, which get orbital instability from linear instability.
We consider the focusing $L^2$-supercritical fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u - (-Δ)^s u = -|u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d\geq 2, \frac{d}{2d-1} \leq s <1$ and $\frac{4s}{d}<α<\frac{4s}{d-2s}$. By means of the localized virial estimate, we prove that the ground state standing wave is strongly unstable by blow-up. This result is a complement to a recent result of Peng-Shi [J. Math. Phys. 59 (2018), 011508] where the stability and instability of standing waves were studied in the $L^2$-subcritical and $L^2$-critical cases.
We consider the stability theory of solitary wave solutions for the generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ i\partial_{t}u+\partial_{x}^{2}u+i|u|^{2σ}\partial_x u=0, $$ where $1<σ<2$. The equation has a two-parameter family of solitary wave solutions of the form $$ u_{ω,c}(t,x)=e^{iωt+i\frac c2(x-ct)-\frac{i}{2σ+2}\int_{-\infty}^{x-ct}φ^{2σ}_{ω,c}(y)dy}φ_{ω,c}(x-ct). $$ The stability theory in the frequency region of $|c|<2\sqrtω$ was studied previously. In this paper, we prove the instability of the solitary wave solutions in the endpoint case $c=2\sqrtω$.
We study the stability/instability of standing waves for the one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with double power nonlinearities: \begin{align*} &i\partial_t u +\partial_x^2 u -|u|^{p-1}u +|u|^{q-1}u=0, \quad (t,x)\in \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R} ,~1<p<q. \end{align*} When $q<5$, the stability properties of standing waves $e^{iωt}ϕ_ω$ may change for the frequency $ω$. A sufficient condition for yielding instability for small frequencies are obtained in previous results, but it has not been known what the sharp condition is. In this paper we completely calculate the explicit formula o…
We continue the study (initiated in \cite{ckstt:7}) of the orbital stability of the ground state cylinder for focussing non-linear Schrödinger equations in the $H^s(\R^n)$ norm for $1-\eps < s < 1$, for small $\eps$. In the $L^2$-subcritical case we obtain a polynomial bound for the time required to move away from the ground state cylinder. If one is only in the $H^1$-subcritical case then we cannot show this, but for defocussing equations we obtain global well-posedness and polynomial growth of $H^s$ norms for $s$ sufficiently close to 1.
We consider the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation with derivative: \begin{equation} iu_t =-u_{xx} -i |u|^{2}u_x -b|u|^4u , \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}, \ b \in\mathbb{R}. \end{equation} If $b=0$, this equation is a gauge equivalent form of the well-known derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation. The soliton profile of DNLS satisfies a certain double power elliptic equation with cubic-quintic nonlinearities. The quintic nonlinearity in our equation only affects the coefficient in front of the quintic term in the elliptic equation, so in this sense the additional no…
We consider the semiclassical limit of the Hartree equation with a data causing a focusing at a point. We study the asymptotic behavior of phase function associated with the WKB approximation near the caustic when a nonlinearity is supercritical. In this case, it is known that a phase shift occurs in a neighborhood of focusing time in the case of focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Thanks to the smoothness of the nonlocal nonlinearities, we justify the WKB-type approximation of the solution for a data which is larger than in the previous results and is not necessarily well-prepared.…
