We consider the global regularity problem for defocusing nonlinear wave systems $$ \Box u = (\nabla_{{\bf R}^m} F)(u) $$ on Minkowski spacetime ${\bf R}^{1+d}$ with d'Alambertian $\Box := -\partial_t^2 + \sum_{i=1}^d \partial_{x_i}^2$, the field $u: {\bf R}^{1+d} \to {\bf R}^m$ is vector-valued, and $F: {\bf R}^m \to {\bf R}$ is a smooth potential which is positive and homogeneous of order $p+1$ outside of the unit ball, for some $p >1$. This generalises the scalar defocusing nonlinear wave (NLW) equation, in which $m=1$ and $F(v) = \frac{1}{p+1} |v|^{p+1}$. It is well known that in the energy sub-critical and energy-critical cases when $d \leq 2$ or $d \geq 3$ and $p \leq 1+\frac{4}{d-2}$, one has global existence of smooth solutions (for dimensions $d \leq 7$ at least) from arbitrary smooth initial data $u(0), \partial_t u(0)$. In this paper we study the supercritical case where $d = 3$ and $p > 5$. We show that in this case, there exists smooth potential $F$ for some sufficiently large $m$ (in fact we can take $m=40$), positive and homogeneous of order $p+1$ outside of the unit ball, and a smooth choice of initial data $u(0), \partial_t u(0)$ for which the solution develops a finite time singularity. In fact the solution is discretely self-similar in a backwards light cone. The basic strategy is to first select the mass and energy densities of $u$, then $u$ itself, and then finally design the potential $F$ in order to solve the required equation. The Nash embedding theorem is used in the second step, explaining the need to take $m$ relatively large.
We consider the radial defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations $iu_t+Δu=|u|^{p}u$ with supercritical exponent $p>4$ in four space dimensions, and prove that any radial solution that remains bounded in the critical Sobolev space must be global and scatter.
We establish global regularity for the logarithmically energy-supercritical wave equation $\Box u = u^5 \log(2+u^2)$ in three spatial dimensions for spherically symmetric initial data, by modifying an argument of Ginibre, Soffer and Velo \cite{gsv} for the energy-critical equation. This example demonstrates that critical regularity arguments can penetrate very slightly into the supercritical regime.
We consider a class of defocusing energy-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in four space dimensions. Following a concentration-compactness approach, we show that for $1<s_c<3/2$, any solution that remains bounded in the critical Sobolev space $\dot{H}_x^{s_c}(\R^4)$ must be global and scatter. Key ingredients in the proof include a long-time Strichartz estimate and a frequency-localized interaction Morawetz inequality.
In this work, we consider the energy-supercritical defocusing cubic nonlinear wave equation in dimension d=5 for radially symmetric initial data. We prove that an a priori bound in the critical space implies global well-posedness and scattering. The main tool that we use is a frequency localized version of the classical Morawetz inequality, inspired by recent developments in the study of the mass and energy critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
We consider the defocusing nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu + |u|^p u=0$ in the energy-supercritical regime p>4. For even values of the power p, we show that blowup (or failure to scatter) must be accompanied by blowup of the critical Sobolev norm. An equivalent formulation is that solutions with bounded critical Sobolev norm are global and scatter. The impetus to consider this problem comes from recent work of Kenig and Merle who treated the case of spherically-symmetric solutions.
We consider the defocusing supercritical generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equation $\partial_t u+\partial_x^3u-\partial_x(u^{k+1})=0$, where $k>4$ is an even integer number. We show that if the initial data $u_0$ belongs to $H^1$ then the corresponding solution is global and scatters in $H^1$. Our method of proof is inspired on the compactness method introduced by C. Kenig and F. Merle.
We consider spherically symmetric supercritical focusing wave equations outside a ball. Using mixed analytical and numerical methods, we show that the threshold for blowup is given by a codimension-one stable manifold of the unique static solution with exactly one unstable direction. We analyze in detail the convergence to this critical solution for initial data fine-tuned to the threshold.
We consider the defocusing nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu + |u|^p u=0$ with spherically-symmetric initial data in the regime $\frac4{d-2}<p<\frac4{d-3}$ (which is energy-supercritical) and dimensions $3\leq d\leq 6$; we also consider $d\geq 7$, but for a smaller range of $p>\frac4{d-2}$. The principal result is that blowup (or failure to scatter) must be accompanied by blowup of the critical Sobolev norm. An equivalent formulation is that maximal-lifespan solutions with bounded critical Sobolev norm are global and scatter.
In this paper, the Choquard equation with an inverse-square potential and both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities in the energy-subcritical regime is investigated. For all the cases, the local well-posedness result in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is established. Moreover, the global existence result for arbitrary initial values is proved in the defocusing case while a global existence/blowup dichotomy below the ground state is established in the focusing case.
We consider the energy-supercritical nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu+|u|^2u=0$ with defocusing cubic nonlinearity in dimension $d=5$ with no radial assumption on the initial data. We prove that a uniform-in-time {\it a priori} bound on the critical norm implies that solutions exist globally in time and scatter at infinity in both time directions. Together with our earlier works in dimensions $d\geq 6$ with general data and dimension $d=5$ with radial data, the present work completes the study of global well-posedness and scattering in the energy-supercritical regime for the cubic nonlineari…
In this paper, we consider the defocusing cubic nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu+|u|^2u=0$ in the energy-supercritical regime, in dimensions $d\geq 6$, with no radial assumption on the initial data. We prove that if a solution satisfies an a priori bound in the critical homogeneous Sobolev space throughout its maximal interval of existence, that is, $u\in L_t^\infty(\dot{H}_x^{s_c}\times\dot{H}_x^{s_c-1})$, then the solution is global and it scatters. Our analysis is based on the methods of the recent works of Kenig-Merle \cite{KenigMerleSupercritical} and Killip-Visan \cite{KillipVisanSuper…
In this paper we prove finite-time blowup of radially symmetric solutions to the quasilinear parabolic-parabolic two-dimensional Keller-Segel system for any positive mass. This is done in case of nonlinear diffusion and also in the case of nonlinear cross-diffusion provided the nonlinear chemosensitivity term is assumed not to decay. Moreover, it is shown that the above-mentioned lack of non-decay assumption is essential with respect to keeping the dichotomy finite-time blowup against boundedness of solutions. Namely, we prove that without the non-decay assumption possible asymptotic behaviour…
We study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing $L^2$-supercritical nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u -(-Δ)^s u = -|u|^αu, \quad u(0) = u_0, \quad \text{on } [0,\infty) \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d \geq 2, \frac{d}{2d-1} \leq s <1$, $\frac{4s}{d}<α<\frac{4s}{d-2s}$ and $u_0 \in \dot{H}^{s_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^s$ is radial with the critical Sobolev exponent $s_{\text{c}}$. To this end, we establish a compactness lemma related to the equation by means of the profile decomposition for bounded sequences in $\dot{H}^{s_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^s$. …
We study the blowup behavior for the focusing energy-supercritical semilinear wave equation in 3 space dimensions without symmetry assumptions on the data. We prove the stability of the ODE blowup profile.
We consider the global regularity problem for defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger systems $$ i \partial_t + Δu = (\nabla_{{\bf R}^m} F)(u) + G $$ on Galilean spacetime ${\bf R} \times {\bf R}^d$, where the field $u\colon {\bf R}^{1+d} \to {\bf C}^m$ is vector-valued, $F\colon {\bf C}^m \to {\bf R}$ is a smooth potential which is positive, phase-rotation-invariant, and homogeneous of order $p+1$ outside of the unit ball for some exponent $p >1$, and $G: {\bf R} \times {\bf R}^d \to {\bf C}^m$ is a smooth, compactly supported forcing term. This generalises the scalar defocusing nonlinear Schrödinge…
We study corotational wave maps from $(1+4)$-dimensional Minkowski space into the $4$-sphere. We prove the stability of an explicitly known self-similar wave map under perturbations that are small in the critical Sobolev space.
We consider the energy-supercritical harmonic map heat flow from $\mathbb{R}^d$ into $\mathbb{S}^d$, under an additional assumption of 1-corotational symmetry. We are interested by the 7 dimensional case which is the borderline between the Type I blowup regime. We construct for this problem a stable finite time blowup solution under the condition of corotational symmetry that blows up via concentration of the universal profile $$u(r,t) \sim Q\left(\frac{r}{λ(t)}\right),$$ where $Q$ is the stationary solution of the equation and the speed is given by the rate $$λ(t) \sim \frac{\sqrt{(T-t)}}{|\l…
We study a defocusing semilinear wave equation, with a power nonlinearity $|u|^{p-1}u$, defined outside the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, $n\ge3$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that if $p>n+4$ and the initial data are nonradial perturbations of large radial data, there exists a global smooth solution. The solution is unique among energy class solutions satisfying an energy inequality. The main tools used are the Penrose transform and a pointwise decay estimate for the exterior linear wave equation perturbed with a large, time dependent potential.
For the focusing cubic wave equation, we find an explicit, non-trivial self-similar blowup solution $u^*_T$, which is defined on the whole space and exists in all supercritical dimensions $d \geq 5$. For $d=7$, we analyze its stability properties without any symmetry assumptions and prove the existence of a set of perturbations which lead to blowup via $u^*_T$ in a backward light cone. Moreover, this set corresponds to a co-dimension one Lipschitz manifold modulo translation symmetries in similarity coordinates.
In this paper we prove that the cubic wave equation is globally well - posed and scattering for radial initial data lying in a slightly supercritical Sobolev space, and a weighted Sobolev space.
We consider co-rotational wave maps from (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski space into the three-sphere. This model exhibits an explicit blowup solution and we prove the asymptotic nonlinear stability of this solution in the whole space under small perturbations of the initial data. The key ingredient is the introduction of a novel coordinate system that allows one to track the evolution past the blowup time and almost up to the Cauchy horizon of the singularity. As a consequence, we also obtain a result on continuation beyond blowup.
We consider the Yang-Mills equations in $(1+d)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. It is known that in the supercritical case, i.e., for $d \geq 5$, these equations admit closed form equivariant self-similar blowup solutions \cite{BieBiz15}. These solutions are furthermore conjectured to be the universal attractors for generic large equivariant data evolutions. In this paper we partially prove this conjecture. Namely, we show that for all odd $d \geq 5$ the blowup mechanism exhibited by these solutions is stable.
We prove finite time supercritical blowup in a parity-time-symmetric system of the two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. One of the equations contains gain and the other one contains dissipation such that strengths of the gain and dissipation are equal. We address two cases: in the first model all nonlinear coefficients (i.e. the ones describing self-action and non-linear coupling) correspond to attractive (focusing) nonlinearities, and in the second case the NLS equation with gain has attractive nonlinearity while the NLS equation with dissipation has repulsive (defocusing) nonli…
We consider the energy supercritical defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_tu+Δu-u|u|^{p-1}=0$ in dimension $d\ge 5$. In a suitable range of energy supercritical parameters $(d,p)$, we prove the existence of $\mathcal C^\infty$ well localized spherically symmetric initial data such that the corresponding unique strong solution blows up in finite time. Unlike other known blow up mechanisms, the singularity formation does not occur by concentration of a soliton or through a self similar solution, which are unknown in the defocusing case, but via a front mechanism. Blow up is achie…
We consider two classes of defocusing energy-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in dimensions $d\geq 5$. We prove that if the solution $u$ is apriorily bounded in the critical Sobolev space, that is, $u\in L_t^\infty \dot H^{s_c}_x$, then $u$ is global and scatters.

We study the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in three space dimensions. We prove that any radial solution that remains bounded in the critical Sobolev space must be global and scatter. In the energy-supercritical setting, we employ a space-localized Lin--Strauss Morawetz inequality of Bourgain. In the inter-critical regime, we prove long-time Strichartz estimates and frequency-localized Lin--Strauss Morawetz inequalities.
We consider equivariant wave maps from $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ to $\mathbb{S}^d$ in supercritical dimensions $3\leq d\leq 6$. Using mixed numerical and analytic methods, we show that the threshold of blowup is given by the codimension-one stable manifold of a self-similar solution with one instability.
We use asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations to study peak-type singular solutions of the supercritical biharmonic NLS. These solutions have a quartic-root blowup rate, and collapse with a quasi self-similar universal profile, which is a zero-Hamiltonian solution of a fourth-order nonlinear eigenvalue problem.
We consider the focusing cubic wave equation in the energy supercritical case, i.e., in dimensions $d \geq 5$. For this model an explicit nontrivial self-similar blowup solution was recently found by the first and third author in \cite{GlogicSchoerkhuber}. Furthermore, the solution is proven to be co-dimension one stable in $d=7$. In this paper, we study the equation from a numerical point of view. For $d=5$ and $d=7$ in the radial case, we provide evidence that this solution is at the threshold between generic ODE blowup and dispersion. In addition, we investigate the spectral problem that un…
In this paper, we prove a universal upper bound on the blowup rate of a focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an angular momentum under a trapping harmonic potential, assuming that the initial data is radially symmetric in the weighted Sobolev space. The nonlinearity is in the mass supercritical and energy subcritical regime. Numerical simulations are also presented.
In this paper, we consider the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb{R}^5 \times SO(5)$. In the $SO(5)-$equivariant setting, the Yang-Mills heat equation reduces to a single semilinear reaction-diffusion equation for which an explicit self-similar blowup solution was found by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small perturbations. In particular, we show that there exists an open set of initial conditions in a suitable topology such that the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time and converge to a non-trivial self-similar…
We consider the Cauchy problem for an energy supercritical nonlinear wave equation that arises in $(1+5)$--dimensional Yang--Mills theory. A certain self--similar solution $W_0$ of this model is conjectured to act as an attractor for generic large data evolutions. Assuming mode stability of $W_0$, we prove a weak version of this conjecture, namely that the self--similar solution $W_0$ is (nonlinearly) stable. Phrased differently, we prove that mode stability of $W_0$ implies its nonlinear stability. The fact that this statement is not vacuous follows from careful numerical work by Bizoń and Ch…
We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear …
We consider the defocusing energy-critical NLS in the exterior of the unit ball in three dimensions. For the initial value problem with Dirichlet boundary condition we prove global well-posedness and scattering with large radial initial data in the Sobolev space $\dot H_0^1$. We also point out that the same strategy can be used to treat the energy-supercritical NLS in the exterior of balls with Dirichlet boundary condition and radial $\dot H_0^1$ initial data.
In this paper we study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing intercritical (mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical) nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation. We firstly establish the profile decomposition of bounded sequences in $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^2$. We also prove a compactness lemma and a variational characterization of ground states related to the equation. As a result, we obtain the $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}}$-concentration of blowup solutions with bounded $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}}$-norm and the limiting profile of blowup solutions with critical $\dot{…
This paper concerns the initial-boundary value problem for a mixed pseudo-parabolic $p$-Laplacian type equation. By constructing a family of potential wells, we first present the explicit expression for the depth of potential well, and then prove the existence, uniqueness and decay estimate of global solutions and the blowup phenomena of solutions with subcritical initial energy. Next, we extend parallelly these results to the critical initial energy. Lastly, the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of global solutions with supercritical initial energy are proved by further analyzing …
We investigate the initial value problem for a defocusing nonlinear Schrödingerequation with exponential nonlinearity. We identify subcritical, critical and supercritical regimes in the energy space. We establish global well-posedness in the subcritical and critical regimes. Well-posedness fails to hold in the supercritical case.
We consider the energy supercritical harmonic heat flow from $\mathbb{R}^d$ into the $d$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ with $d \geq 7$. Under an additional assumption of 1-corotational symmetry, the problem reduces to the one dimensional semilinear heat equation $$\partial_t u = \partial^2_r u + \frac{(d-1)}{r}\partial_r u - \frac{(d-1)}{2r^2}\sin(2u).$$ We construct for this equation a family of $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$ solutions which blow up in finite time via concentration of the universal profile $$u(r,t) \sim Q\left(\frac{r}{λ(t)}\right),$$ where $Q$ is the stationary solution of the equation and …

We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an inverse-square potential in dimensions $3\leq d \leq 6$. We consider both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities in the mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical regime. In the focusing case, we prove a scattering/blowup dichotomy below the ground state. In the defocusing case, we prove scattering in $H^1$ for arbitrary data.
