This paper concerns the initial-boundary value problem for a mixed pseudo-parabolic $p$-Laplacian type equation. By constructing a family of potential wells, we first present the explicit expression for the depth of potential well, and then prove the existence, uniqueness and decay estimate of global solutions and the blowup phenomena of solutions with subcritical initial energy. Next, we extend parallelly these results to the critical initial energy. Lastly, the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of global solutions with supercritical initial energy are proved by further analyzing the properties of $ω$-limits of solutions.
In this paper we prove finite-time blowup of radially symmetric solutions to the quasilinear parabolic-parabolic two-dimensional Keller-Segel system for any positive mass. This is done in case of nonlinear diffusion and also in the case of nonlinear cross-diffusion provided the nonlinear chemosensitivity term is assumed not to decay. Moreover, it is shown that the above-mentioned lack of non-decay assumption is essential with respect to keeping the dichotomy finite-time blowup against boundedness of solutions. Namely, we prove that without the non-decay assumption possible asymptotic behaviour…
We construct examples of finite time singularity from smooth data for linear uniformly parabolic systems in the plane. We obtain similar examples for quasilinear systems with coefficients that depend only on the solution.
We study two toy models obtained after a slight modification of the nonlinearity of the usual doubly parabolic Keller-Segel system. For these toy models, both consisting of a system of two parabolic equations, we establish that for data which are, in a suitable sense, smaller than the diffusion parameter $τ$ in the equation for the chemoattractant, we obtain global solutions, and for some data larger than $τ$ , a finite time blowup. In this way, we check that our size condition for the global existence is sharp for large $τ$ , up to a logarithmic factor.
In this paper we consider quasilinear Keller-Segel type systems of two kinds in higher dimensions. In the case of a nonlinear diffusion system we prove an optimal (with respect to possible nonlinear diffusions generating explosion in finite time of solutions) finite-time blowup result. In the case of a cross-diffusion system we give results which are optimal provided one assumes some proper non-decay of a nonlinear chemical sensitivity. Moreover, we show that once we do not assume the above mentioned non-decay, our result cannot be as strong as in the case of nonlinear diffusion without nonlin…
This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomenon of stochastic parabolic equations both on bounded domain and in the whole space. We introduce a new method to study the blowup phenomenon on bounded domain. Comparing with the existing results, we delete the assumption that the solutions to stochastic heat equations are non-negative. Then the blowup phenomenon in the whole space is obtained by using the properties of heat kernel. We obtain that the solutions will blow up in finite time for nontrivial initial data.
We consider the higher-order semilinear parabolic equation $$ \partial_t u = -(-Δ)^{m} u + u|u|^{p-1}, $$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p > 1$ and $m \geq 1$ is an odd integer. We exhibit type I non self-similar blowup solutions for this equation and obtain a sharp description of its asymptotic behavior. The method of construction relies on the spectral analysis of a non self-adjoint linearized operator in an appropriate scaled variables setting. In view of known spectral and sectorial properties of the linearized operator obtained by [Galaktionov, rspa2011], we revisit the techniq…
We consider in this note the semilinear heat system $$\partial_t u = Δu + f(v), \quad \partial_t v = μΔv + g(u), \quad μ> 0,$$ where the nonlinearity has no gradient structure taking of the particular form $$f(v) = v|v|^{p-1} \quad \text{and}\quad g(u) = u|u|^{q-1} \quad \text{with} \quad p, q > 1, $$ or $$f(v) = e^{pv}\quad \text{and} \quad g(u) = e^{qu} \quad \text{with} \quad p,q > 0.$$ We exhibit type I blowup solutions for this system and give a precise description of its blowup profiles. The method relies on two-step procedure: the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one via…
This note is devoted to a simple proof of blowup of solutions for a nonlinear heat equation. The criterion for a blowup is expressed in terms of a Morrey space norm and is in a sense complementary to conditions guaranteeing the global in time existence of solutions. The method goes back to H. Fujita and extends to other nonlinear parabolic equations.
In this paper, we first establish Hopf's lemmas for parabolic fractional equations and parabolic fractional $p$-equations. Then we derive an asymptotic Hopf's lemma for antisymmetric solutions to parabolic fractional equations. We believe that these Hopf's lemmas will become powerful tools in obtaining qualitative properties of solutions for nonlocal parabolic equations.
We consider the following parabolic system whose nonlinearity has no gradient structure: $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} \partial_t u = Δu + |v|^{p-1}v, \quad & \partial_t v = μΔv + |u|^{q - 1}u,\\ u(\cdot, 0) = u_0, \quad & v(\cdot, 0) = v_0, \end{array}\right. $$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p, q > 1$ and $μ> 0$. We show the existence of initial data such that the corresponding solution to this system blows up in finite time $T(u_0, v_0)$ simultaneously in $u$ and $v$ only at one blowup point $a$, according to the following asymptotic dynamics: $$\left\{\begin{array}{c} u(x,t)\sim Γ\…
We construct examples of blowup from smooth data for complex-valued solutions to linear uniformly parabolic equations in dimension $n \geq 2$, which are exactly as irregular as parabolic energy estimates allow.
We consider a nonlocal parabolic PDE, which may be regarded as the standard semilinear heat equation with power nonlinearity, where the nonlinear term is divided by some Sobolev norm of the solution. In this paper, we are interested in constructing blowup solutions under some critical regimes. We had a complete new phenomenon of the blowup speed with a log correction term.
We formulate a precise conjecture about the universal behavior near the diagonal of the spectral function of the Laplacian of a smooth compact Riemann manifold. We prove this conjecture when the manifold and the metric are real analytic, and we also present an alternate proof when the manifold is the round sphere.
For weak solutions to the evolutional $p$-Laplace equation with a time-dependent Radon measure on the right hand side we obtain pointwise estimates via a nonlinear parabolic potential.
We prove interior Hölder estimates for the spatial gradient of viscosity solutions to the parabolic homogeneous $p$-Laplacian equation \[ u_t=|\nabla u|^{2-p} \mbox{ div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), \] where $1<p<\infty$. This equation arises from tug-of-war-like stochastic games with noise. It can also be considered as the parabolic $p$-Laplacian equation in non divergence form.
Refined structures of blowup for non-collapsing maximal solution to a semilinear parabolic equation are studied. We will prove that the blowup set is empty for non-collapsing blowing-up in subcritical case, and all finite time non-collapsing blowing-up must be type II in critical case. When p>p_S=(N+2)/(N-2) for N>=3, the Hausdorff dimension of the blowup set for maximal solution whose energy is non-collapsing is shown to be no greater than N-2-4/(p-1), which answers a question proposed in [7] positively. At the end of this paper, we also present some new examples of collapsing and non-collaps…
We consider the IBVP in exterior domains for the p-Laplacian parabolic system. We prove regularity up to the boundary, extinction properties for p \in ( 2n/(n+2) , 2n/(n+1) ) and exponential decay for p= 2n/(n+1) .
In this paper we introduce a natural function class and prove the existence and uniqueness of both nonnegative renormalized solutions and entropy solutions for the fractional p-Laplacian parabolic problem with L^1 data. And moreover, we obtain the equivalence of renormalized solutions and entropy solutions and establish a comparison result.
We prove local Lipschitz regularity for weak solutions to a class of degenerate parabolic PDEs modeled on the parabolic $p$-Laplacian $$\p_t u= \sum_{i=1}^{2n} X_i (|\nabla_0 u|^{p-2} X_i u),$$ in a cylinder $Ω\times \R^+$, where $Ω$ is domain in the Heisenberg group $\Hn$, and $2\le p \le 4$. The result continues to hold in the more general setting of contact sub-Riemannian manifolds.
We prove the existence of unique solutions to the Dirichlet boundary value problems for linear second-order uniformly parabolic operators in either divergence or non-divergence form with boundary blowup low-order coefficients. The domain is possibly time varying, non-smooth, and satisfies the exterior measure condition.
A by now classical result due to DiBenedetto states that the spatial gradient of solutions to the parabolic $p$-Laplacian system is locally Hölder continuous in the interior. However, the boundary regularity is not yet well understood. In this paper we prove a boundary $L^\infty$-estimate for the spatial gradient $Du$ of solutions to the parabolic $p$-Laplacian system \begin{equation*} \partial_t u - \Div \big(|Du|^{p-2}Du\big) = 0 \quad\mbox{in $Ω\times(0,T)$} \end{equation*} for $p\ge 2$, together with a quantitative estimate. In particular, this implies the global Lipschitz regularity of so…
We discuss the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution of the following quasilinear parabolic equation $u_t-Δ_{p(x)}u = f(x,u)$ in $ (0,T)\timesΩ$; $u = 0$ on $(0,T)\times\partialΩ$; $u(0,x)=u_0(x)$ in $Ω$; involving the $p(x)$-Laplacian operator. Next, we discuss the global behaviour of solutions and in particular some stabilization properties.
We prove existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to the degenerate parabolic problem $u_t = Δ_\infty^h u$ where $Δ_\infty^h$ is the $h$-homogeneous operator associated with the infinity-Laplacian, $Δ_\infty^h u = |Du|^{h-3} < D^2uDu,Du>$. We also derive the asymptotic behavior of $u$ for the problem posed in the whole space and for the Dirichlet problem with zero boundary conditions.
The blowup in finite time of solutions to SPDEs \begin{equation*} \partial_tu_t(x)=-ϕ(-Δ)u_t(x) +σ(u_t(x))\dotξ(t,x), \quad t>0,x\in\mathbb{R}^d, \end{equation*} { is} investigated, where $\dotξ$ could be either a white noise or a colored noise and $ϕ:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty)$ is a Bernstein function. The sufficient conditions on $σ$, $\dotξ$ and the initial value that imply the non-existence of the global solution are discussed. The results in this paper generalise those in ``Foondun, M., Liu, W. and Nane, E. Some non-existence results for a class of stochastic partial differential equations.…
We show uniqueness of cylindrical blowups for mean curvature flow in all dimension and all codimension. Cylindrical singularities are known to be the most important; they are the most prevalent in any codimension. Mean curvature flow in higher codimension is a nonlinear parabolic system where many of the methods used for hypersurfaces do not apply and uniqueness of cylindrical blowups remained a major open problem. Our results imply regularity of the singular set for the system.
We study the regularity of the solutions to initial-boundary value problems for N-systems of the p-Laplacian type, in $n\geq 3$ space variables, with square-integrable external forces in the space-time cylinder. So, the ellipticity coefficient remains unbounded. The singular case $μ=0 $ is covered.
In this thesis, a unified approach to prove the boundedness of gradients of solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic and parabolic phi-Laplacian systems is presented. At first, a Cacciopoli-type energy inequality with an additional function f which can be chosen freely is proven. Then, Di Giorgi's method is applied using level sets which will lead to L-infinity-estimates on the gradient of the weak solution.
We consider the asymptotic behavior of quasilinear parabolic equations posed in a family of unbounded domains that degenerates onto a lower dimensional set. Considering an auxiliary family of weighted Sobolev spaces we show the existence of global attractors and we analyze convergence properties of the solutions as well of the attractors.
In this paper we study an evolution equation involving the normalized $p$-Laplacian and a bounded continuous source term. The normalized $p$-Laplacian is in non divergence form and arises for example from stochastic tug-of-war games with noise. We prove local $C^{α, \fracα{2}}$ regularity for the spatial gradient of the viscosity solutions. The proof is based on an improvement of flatness and proceeds by iteration.
In this article, we investigate the initial and boundary blow-up problem for the $p$-Laplacian parabolic equation $u_t-Δ_p u=-b(x,t)f(u)$ over a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\ge2$, where $Δ_pu={\rm div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)$ with $p>1$, and $f(u)$ is a function of regular variation at infinity. We study the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions, and their asymptotic behaviors near the parabolic boundary.
We study nonlinear parabolic PDEs with Orlicz-type growth conditions. The main result gives the existence of a unique solution to the obstacle problem related to these equations. To achieve this we show the boundedness of weak solutions and that a uniformly bounded sequence of weak supersolutions converges to a weak supersolution. Moreover, we prove that if the obstacle is continuous, so is the solution.
We provide a detailed (and fully rigorous) derivation of several fundamental properties of bounded weak solutions to initial-value problems for general conservative 2nd-order parabolic equations with p-Laplacian diffusion and (arbitrary) bounded and integrable initial data.
We investigate strong and weak versions of maximum and comparison principles for a class of quasilinear parabolic equations with the $p$-Laplacian $$ \partial_t u - Δ_p u = λ|u|^{p-2} u + f(x,t) $$ under zero boundary and nonnegative initial conditions on a bounded cylindrical domain $Ω\times (0, T)$, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$, and $f \in L^\infty(Ω\times (0, T))$. Several related counterexamples are given.
Local Hölder regularity is established for certain weak solutions to a class of parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equations with merely measurable kernels. The proof uses DeGiorgi's iteration and refines DiBenedetto's intrinsic scaling method. The control of a nonlocal integral of solutions in the reduction of oscillation plays a crucial role and entails delicate analysis in this intrinsic scaling scenario. Dispensing with any logarithmic estimate and any comparison principle, the proof is new even for the linear case.
In this paper we establish the \emph{space-like} strong unique continuation for nonlocal equations of the type $(\partial_t - Δ)^s u= Vu$, for $0<s <1$. The proof of our main result, Theorem 1.1, is achieved via a conditional elliptic type doubling property for solutions to the appropriate extension problem, followed by a blowup analysis.
In this paper, we consider a non-local diffusion equation involving the fractional $p(x)$-Laplacian with nonlinearities of variable exponent type. Employing the sub-differential approach we establish the existence of local solutions. By combining the potential well theory with the Nehari manifold, we obtain the existence of global solutions and finite time blow-up of solutions. Moreover, we study the asymptotic stability of global solutions as time goes to infinity in some variable exponent Lebesgue spaces.
Here we generalize quasilinear parabolic $p-$Laplacian type equations to obtain the prototype equation as \[ u_t - \text{div} (g(|Du|)/ |Du| \cdot Du) = 0, \] where a nonnegative, increasing, and continuous function $g$ trapped in between two power functions $|Du|^{g_0 -1}$ and $|Du|^{g_1 -1}$ with $1<g_0 \leq g_1 < \infty$. Through this generalization in the setting from Orlicz spaces, we provide a uniform proof with a single geometric setting that a bounded weak solution is locally Hölder continuous considering $1 < g_0 \leq g_1 \leq 2$ and $2 \leq g_0 \leq g_1 < \infty$ separately. By using…
In this paper, we mainly consider the initial boundary problem for a quasilinear parabolic equation \[ u_t-\mathrm{div}\left(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u\right)=-|u|^{β-1}u+α|u|^{q-2}u, \] where $p>1,β>0$, $q\geq1$ and $α>0$. By using Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality, energy method and comparison principle, the phenomena of blowup and extinction are classified completely in the different ranges of reaction exponents.
The aim of this paper is to establish global Calderón--Zygmund theory to parabolic $p$-Laplacian system: $$ u_t -\operatorname{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) = \operatorname{div} (|F|^{p-2}F)~\text{in}~Ω\times (0,T)\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}, $$ proving that $$F\in L^q\Rightarrow \nabla u\in L^q,$$ for any $q>\max\{p,\frac{n(2-p)}{2}\}$ and $p>1$. Acerbi and Mingione \cite{Acerbi07} proved this estimate in the case $p>\frac{2n}{n+2}$. In this article we settle the case $1<p\leq \frac{2n}{n+2}$. We also treat systems with discontinuous coefficients having small BMO (bounded mean oscillation) norm…
We consider the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system in three dimensions and higher, corresponding to the mass supercritical case. We construct rigorously a solution which blows up in finite time by having its mass concentrating near a ring that shrinks to a point. In particular, the singularity is of type II, non self-similar. We show the stability of this dynamics among spherically symmetric solutions. In renormalised variables, the solution ressembles a traveling wave imploding at the origin, and this, to our knowledge, is the first stability result for such phenomenon for an evolution PD…
Basing on the relations between a system of ODE and a system of parabolic equations, we establish some general theories in heat transfer about quenching, global existence and blowup phenomena, obtain the conditions(even watershed) on f(u,v), g(u,v), a(x) and b(x) which let the solution be global existence, quench or blow up, and estimate the bounds for blowup time and quenching time.
We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear …
We study general parabolic equations of the form $u_t = div A(x,t, u,D u) + div(|F|^{p-2} F)+ f$ whose principal part depends on the solution itself. The vector field $A$ is assumed to have small mean oscillation in $x$, measurable in $t$, Lipschitz continuous in $u$, and its growth in $Du$ is like the $p$-Laplace operator. We establish interior Calderón-Zygmund estimates for locally bounded weak solutions to the equations when $p>2n/(n+2)$. This is achieved by employing a perturbation method together with developing a two-parameter technique and a new compactness argument. We also make crucia…
We study parabolic chord arc domains, introduced by Hofmann, Lewis and Nyström, and prove a free boundary regularity result below the continuous threshold. More precisely, we show that a Reifenberg flat, parabolic chord arc domain whose Poisson kernel has logarithm in VMO must in fact be a vanishing chord arc domain (i.e. satisfies a vanishing Carleson measure condition). This generalizes, to the parabolic setting, a result of Kenig and Toro and answers in the affirmative a question left open in the aforementioned paper of Hofmann et al. A key step in this proof is a classification of "flat" b…
