In this paper, we study the ill-posdness of the Cauchy problem for semilinear wave equation with very low regularity, where the nonlinear term depends on $u$ and $\partial_t u$. We prove a ill-posedness result for the "defocusing" case, and give an alternative proof for the supercritical "focusing" case, which improves our previous result in Chin. Ann. Math. Ser. B 26(3), 361-378, 2005.
Boundary characteristic point regularity is studied for a class of semilinear heat equations and an ODE criterion of regularity is obtained. Extensions to higher-order semilinear parabolic problems are discussed.
In the present paper, we investigate the regularity and symmetry properties of weak solutions to semilinear elliptic equations which are locally stable.
We study the semilinear Poisson equation \begin{equation} \label{pro} Δu = f(x, u) \hskip .2 in \text{in} \hskip .2 in B_1. \end{equation} Our main results provide conditions on $f$ which ensure that weak solutions of this equation belong to $C^{1,1}(B_{1/2})$. In some configurations, the conditions are sharp.
We deal with a class of semilinear nonlocal differential equations in Hilbert spaces which is a general model for some anomalous diffusion equations. By using the theory of integral equations with completely positive kernel together with local estimates, some existence, regularity and stability results are established. An application to nonlocal partial differential equations is shown to demonstrate our abstract results.
We prove the existence of infinitely many classical periodic solutions for a class of semilinear wave equations with periodic boundary conditions. Our argument relies on some new estimates for the linear problem with periodic boundary conditions, by combining Littlewood-Paley techniques, the Hausdorff-Young theorem, and a variational formulation due to Rabinowitz. We also develop a new approach to the regularity of the distributional solutions, by employing Gagliardo-Nirenberg estimates.
In this paper, we study the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problem concerning general semilinear elliptic equations in divergence form. We establish that the boundary Lipschitz regularity of solutions under some more weaker conditions on the coefficients, the boundary, the boundary function and the nonhomogeneous term. In particular, we assume that the nonhomogeneous term satisfies Dini continuity condition and Lipschitz Newtonian potential condition, which will be the optimal conditions to obtain the boundary Lipschitz regularity of solutions.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for semilinear $σ$-evolution models with an exponential decay memory term. Concerning the corresponding linear Cauchy problem, we derive some regularity-loss-type estimates of solutions and generalized diffusion phenomena. Particularly, the obtained estimations for solutions are sharper than those in the previous paper [20]. Then, we determine the critical exponents for the semilinear Cauchy problem with power nonlinearity in some spatial dimensions by proving global (in time) existence of Sobolev solutions with low regularity of fractional orders …
In this paper, we consider the pointwise boundary Lipschitz regularity of solutions for the semilinear elliptic equations in divergence form mainly under some weaker assumptions on nonhomogeneous term and the boundary. If the domain satisfies C^{1,\text{Dini}} condition at a boundary point, and the nonhomogeneous term satisfies Dini continuous condition and Lipschitz Newtonian potential condition, then the solution is Lipschitz continuous at this point. Furthermore, we generalize this result to Reifenberg C^{1,\text{Dini}} domains.
Let $2\le n\le 5$. We establish an apriori interior Hölder regularity of $C^2$-stable solutions to the semilinear equation $-Δu=f(u)$ in any domain of $R^n$ for any nonlinearity $f\in C^{0,1}(R) $.If $f $ is nondecreasing and convex in addition,we obtain an interior Hölder regularity, and hence the local boundedness, of $W^{1,2}(Ω)$-stable solutions by locally approximating them via $C^2(Ω)$-stable solutions. In particular, we do not require any lower bound on $f$.
For any subcritical index of regularity $s>3/2$, we prove the almost global well posedness for the 2-dimensional semilinear wave equation with the cubic nonlinearity in the derivatives, when the initial data are small in the Sobolev space $H^s\times H^{s-1}$ with certain angular regularity. The main new ingredient in the proof is an endpoint version of the generalized Strichartz estimates in the space $L^2_t L_{|x|}^\infty L^2_θ([0,T]\times \R^2)$. In the last section, we also consider the general semilinear wave equations with the spatial dimension $n\ge 2$ and the order of nonlinearity $p\ge…
This paper deals with existence and regularity of positive solutions of singular elliptic problems on a smooth bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions involving the $Φ$-Laplacian operator. The proof of existence is based on a variant of the generalized Galerkin method that we developed inspired on ideas by Browder and a comparison principle. By using a kind of Moser iteration scheme we show $L^{\infty}(Ω)$-regularity for positive solutions
We prove the local existence and uniqueness of minimal regularity solutions $u$ of the semilinear generalized Tricomi equation $\partial_t^2 u-t^m Δu =F(u)$ with initial data $(u(0,\cdot), \partial_t u(0,\cdot)) \in \dot{H^γ}(\mathbb R^n) \times \dot{H}^{γ-\frac2{m+2}}(\mathbb R^n)$ under the assumption that $|F(u)|\lesssim |u|^κ$ and $|F'(u)| \lesssim |u|^{κ-1}$ for some $κ>1$. Our results improve previous results of M. Beals [2] and of ourselves [15-17]. We establish Strichartz-type estimates for the linear generalized Tricomi operator $\partial_t^2 -t^m Δ$ from which the semilinear results …
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the semilinear heat and Schrödinger equations, with the nonlinear term $ f ( u ) = λ|u|^αu$. We show that low regularity of $f$ (i.e., $α>0$ but small) limits the regularity of any possible solution for a certain class of smooth initial data. We employ two different methods, which yield two different types of results. On the one hand, we consider the semilinear equation as a perturbation of the ODE $w_t= f(w)$. This yields in particular an optimal regularity result for the semilinear heat equation in Hölder spaces. In addition, this approach yields…
In this note we prove local regularity results for distributional solutions and subsolutions of semilinear elliptic systems such as $$ L_k^m u_k = f_k(x,u_1,\ldots,u_N) \quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^n\qquad (k=1,\ldots,N) $$ where $L_1,\ldots,L_N$ are of divergence-form and $n\geq 2m$. We show that distributional subsolutions are locally bounded from above if $|f_k(x,z)|\leq C(1+|z|^p)$ for $1\leq p<\frac{n}{n-2m},k=1,\ldots,N$. Furthermore, regularity properties of subsolutions and improved versions for bounded subsolutions are given. Even for $f_1=\ldots=f_N=0$ our results are new.
In this paper, we consider a blow-up solution for the complex-valued semilinear wave equation with power non-linearity in one space dimension. We show that the set of non characteristic points $I_0$ is open and that the blow-up curve is of class $C^{1,μ_0}$ and the phase $θ$ is $C^{μ_0}$ on this set. In order to prove this result, we introduce a Liouville Theorem for that equation.
Here we show a hidden regularity result for nonlinear wave equations with an integral term of convolution type and Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under general assumptions on the nonlinear term and on the integral kernel we are able to state results about global existence of strong and mild solutions without any further smallness on the initial data. Then we define the trace of the normal derivative of the solution showing a regularity result. In such a way we extend to integrodifferential equations with nonlinear term well-known results available in the literature for linear wave equations wi…
We prove the existence of infinitely many classical periodic solutions for a class of degenerate semilinear wave equations: \[ u_{tt}-u_{xx}+|u|^{s-1}u=f(x,t), \] for all $s>1$. In particular we prove the existence of infinitely many classical solutions for the case $s=3$ posed by Brézis in \cite{BrezisBAMS}. The proof relies on a new upper a priori estimates for minimax values of, a pertubed from symmetry, strongly indefinite functional, depending on a small parameter.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for the semilinear damped wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu + u_t = h(u);\qquad u(0;x) = f(x); \quad u_t(0;x) = g(x);$ where $h(s) = |s|^{1+2/n}μ(|s|)$. Here n is the space dimension and $μ$ is a modulus of continuity. Our goal is to obtain sharp conditions on $μ$ to obtain a threshold between global (in time) existence of small data solutions (stability of the zerosolution) and blow-up behavior even of small data solutions.
In this paper, we investigate abstract time-fractional evolution equations with nonlinear perturbations. We construct solutions of Lipschitz perturbation problems in arbitrary large time interval independent of the Lipschitz constants. We will extend well-known results for standard evolution equations such as the blow-up alternative, to the time-fractional evolution equations. We also prove the differentiability with respect to time of the solution when the perturbation is sufficiently smooth. The differentiability enables us to use the maximum principle. The theory on general Banach spaces en…
We investigate stable solutions of elliptic equations of the type \begin{equation*} \left \{ \begin{aligned} (-Δ)^s u&=λf(u) \qquad {\mbox{ in $B_1 \subset \R^{n}$}} \\ u&= 0 \qquad{\mbox{ on $\partial B_1$,}}\end{aligned}\right . \end{equation*} where $n\ge2$, $s \in (0,1)$, $λ\geq 0$ and $f$ is any smooth positive superlinear function. The operator $(-Δ)^s$ stands for the fractional Laplacian, a pseudo-differential operator of order $2s$. According to the value of $λ$, we study the existence and regularity of weak solutions $u$.
In [19-20], we have established the existence and singularity structures of low regularity solutions to the semilinear generalized Tricomi equations in the degenerate hyperbolic regions and to the higher order degenerate hyperbolic equations, respectively. In the present paper, we shall be concerned with the low regularity solution problem for the semilinear mixed type equation $\p_t^2u-t^{2l-1}Δu= f(t,x,u)$ with an initial data $u(0,x)=φ(x)\in H^{s}(\Bbb R^n)$ ($0\le s<\f{n}{2}$), where $(t,x)\in\Bbb R \times\Bbb R^n$, $n\ge 2$, $l\in\Bbb N$, $f(t,x,u)$ is $C^1$ smooth in its arguments and ha…
Semi-linear elliptic boundary problems with non-linearities of product type are considered, in particular the stationary Navier--Stokes equations. Regularity and existence results are dealt with in the Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces, and it is explained how difficulties occurring for boundary conditions of a high class may be handled.

We survey existence and regularity results for semi-linear wave equations. In particular, we review the recent regularity results for the $u^5$-Klein Gordon equation by Grillakis and this author and give a self-contained, slightly simplified proof.
We consider a possibly strongly degenerate parabolic semilinear problem which can be applied to a differential model for pricing financial derivatives. We prove the asked regularity for applying the Ito's formula which is used for building the differential model.
In this paper, we study semilinear elliptic systems with critical nonlinearity of the form \begin{equation}\label{sys01} Δu=Q(x, u, \nabla u), \end{equation} for $u: \mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^K$, $Q$ has quadratic growth in $\nabla u$. Our work is motivated by elliptic systems for harmonic map and biharmonic map. When $n=2$, such a system does not have smooth regularity in general for $W^{1, 2}$ weak solutions, by a well-known example of J. Frehse. Classical results of harmonic map, proved by F. Hélein (for $n=2$) and F. Béthuel (for $n\geq 3$), assert that a $W^{1, n}$ weak solution …
We study critical points of a one-parameter family of functionals arising in combustion models. The problems we consider converge, for infinitesimal values of the parameter, to Bernoulli's free boundary problem, also known as one-phase problem. We prove a $C^{1,α}$ estimates for the "interfaces" (level sets separating the burnt and unburnt regions). As a byproduct, we obtain the one-dimensional symmetry of minimizers in the whole $\mathbb{R}^N$, for $N \leq 4$, answering positively a conjecture of Fernández-Real and Ros-Oton. Our results are to Bernoulli's free boundary problem what Savin's re…
We consider the class of semi-stable solutions to semilinear equations $-Δu=f(u)$ in a bounded smooth domain $Ω$ of $R^n$ (with $Ω$ convex in some results). This class includes all local minimizers, minimal, and extremal solutions. In dimensions $n \leq 4$, we establish an priori $L^\infty$ bound which holds for every positive semi-stable solution and every nonlinearity $f$. This estimate leads to the boundedness of all extremal solutions when $n=4$ and $Ω$ is convex. This result was previously known only in dimensions $n\leq 3$ by a result of G. Nedev. In dimensions $5 \leq n \leq 9$ the boun…
In this paper we find the critical exponent for the global existence (in time) of small data solutions to the Cauchy problem for the semilinear dissipative evolution equations % \[ u_{tt}+(-Δ)^δu_{tt}+(-Δ)^αu+(-Δ)^θu_t=|u_t|^p, \quad t\geq 0,\,\, x\in\R^n,\] % with $p>1$, $2θ\in [0, α]$ and $δ\in (θ,α]$. We show that, under additional regularity $\left(H^{α+δ}(\R^n)\cap L^{m}(\R^n) \right)\times \left(H^{2δ}(\R^n)\cap L^{m}(\R^n)\right) $ for initial data, with $m\in (1,2]$, the critical exponent is given by $p_c=1+\frac{2mθ}{n}$. The nonexistence of global solutions in the subcritical cases i…
This paper deals with the spatial and temporal regularity of the unique Hilbert space valued mild solution to a semilinear stochastic partial differential equation with nonlinear terms that satisfy global Lipschitz conditions. It is shown that the mild solution has the same optimal regularity properties as the stochastic convolution. The proof is elementary and makes use of existing results on the regularity of the solution, in particular, the Hölder continuity with a non-optimal exponent.
We study the regularity of stable solutions to the problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} (-Δ)^s u &=& f(u) & \text{in} \quad B_1\,, u &\equiv&0 & \text{in} \quad \mathbb R^n\setminus B_1\,, \end{array} \right. $$ where $s\in(0,1)$. Our main result establishes an $L^\infty$ bound for stable and radially decreasing $H^s$ solutions to this problem in dimensions $2 \leq n < 2(s+2+\sqrt{2(s+1)})$. In particular, this estimate holds for all $s\in(0,1)$ in dimensions $2 \leq n\leq 6$. It applies to all nonlinearities $f\in C^2$. For such parameters $s$ and $n$, our result leads to the regularity of …
We consider the reaction-diffusion problem $-Δ_g u = f(u)$ in $\mathcal{B}_R$ with zero Dirichlet boundary condition, posed in a geodesic ball $\mathcal{B}_R$ with radius $R$ of a Riemannian model $(M,g)$. This class of Riemannian manifolds includes the classical \textit{space forms}, i.e., the Euclidean, elliptic, and hyperbolic spaces. For the class of semistable solutions we prove radial symmetry and monotonicity. Furthermore, we establish $L^\infty$, $L^p$, and $W^{1,p}$ estimates which are optimal and do not depend on the nonlinearity $f$. As an application, under standard assumptions on …
In this paper, we investigate the problem of optimal regularity for derivative semilinear wave equations to be locally well-posed in $H^{s}$ with spatial dimension $n \leq 5$. We show this equation, with power $2\le p\le 1+4/(n-1)$, is (strongly) ill-posed in $H^{s}$ with $s = (n+5)/4$ in general. Moreover, when the nonlinearity is quadratic we establish a characterization of the structure of nonlinear terms in terms of the regularity. As a byproduct, we give an alternative proof of the failure of the local in time endpoint scale-invariant $L_{t}^{4/(n-1)}L_{x}^{\infty}$ Strichartz estimates. …
We consider the Gelfand problem in a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with the Dirichlet boundary condition. We are interested in the boundedness of the extremal solution $u^*$. When the dimension $N\ge10$, it is known that a singular extremal solution can be constructed for the nonlinearity $f(u)=e^u$ and $Ω=B_1$. When $3\le N\le 9$, Cabré, Figalli, Ros-Oton, and Serra (2020) proved the following surprising result: the extremal solution $u^*$ is bounded if the nonlinearity $f$ is positive, nondecreasing, and convex. In this paper, we succeed in generalizing their result to genera…
We consider the semilinear elliptic equation $-Δu =λf(u)$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ of $R^{n}$ with Dirichielt boundary condition, where $f$ is a $C^{1}$ positive and nondeccreasing function in $[0,\infty)$ such that $\frac{f(t)}{t}\rightarrow\infty$ as $t\rightarrow\infty$. When $Ω$ is an arbitrary domain and $f$ is not necessarily convex, the boundedness of the extremal solution $u^{*}$ is known only for $n= 2$, established by X. Cabré \cite{C1}. In this paper, we prove this for higher dimensions depending on the nonlinearity $f$. In particular, we prove that if $$\frac{1}{2}<β_{-}:=\li…
In the first part of the paper we prove various results on regularity of Feynman-Kac functionals of Hunt processes associated with time dependent semi-Dirichlet forms. In the second part we study the Cauchy problem for semilinear parabolic equations with measure data involving operators associated with time-dependent forms. Model examples are non-symmetric divergence form operators and fractional laplacians with possibly variable exponents. We first introduce a definition of a solution resembling Stampacchia's definition in the sense of duality and then, using the results of the first part, we…
In this paper we establish existence of a solution to a semilinear equation with free boundary conditions on stratified Lie groups. In the process, a monotonicity condition is proved, which is quintessential in establishing the regularity of the solution.
Applying the method of moving planes in integral forms, we establish radial symmetry for positive solutions to a class of semilinear equations involving the fractional Laplacian in the unit ball and obtain Liouville type theorems concerning the non-existence of positive solutions in the half space. The regularity of solutions are also investigated.
We prove existence of infinitely many classical periodic solutions with periodic boundary conditions for a class of monotone semilinear wave equations. Our argument relies on some new estimates for the linear problem with periodic boundary conditions by combining Littewood-Paley techniques, the Hausdorff-Young theorem and a variational formulation due to Rabinowitz. We also develop a new approach to the regularity of distributional solutions by differentiating the equations and employing Gagliardo-Nirenberg estimates.
We consider $u(x,t)$, a solution of $\partial_tu = Δu + |u|^{p-1}u$ which blows up at some time $T > 0$, where $u:\mathbb{R}^N \times[0,T) \to \mathbb{R}$, $p > 1$ and $(N-2)p < N+2$. Define $S \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ to be the blow-up set of $u$, that is the set of all blow-up points. Under suitable nondegeneracy conditions, we show that if $S$ contains a $(N-\ell)$-dimensional continuum for some $\ell \in \{1,\dots, N-1\}$, then $S$ is in fact a $\mathcal{C}^2$ manifold. The crucial step is to derive a refined asymptotic behavior of $u$ near blow-up. In order to obtain such a refined behavior,…
The paper makes use of recent results in the theory of Banach lattices and positive operators to deal with abstract semilinear equations. The aim is to work with minimal or no regularity conditions on the boundary of the domains, where the usual arguments based on maximum principles do not apply. A key result is an application of Kato's inequality to prove a comparison theorem for eigenfunctions that only requires interior regularity and avoids the use of the Hopf boundary maximum principle. We demonstrate the theory on an abstract degenerate logistic equation by proving the existence, uniquen…
A semilinear parabolic problem of second order with an unknown time-convolution kernel is considered. The missing kernel is recovered from an additional integral measurement. The existence, uniqueness and regularity of a weak solution is addressed. We design a numerical algorithm based on Rothe's method, derive a priori estimates and prove convergence of iterates towards the exact solution.
We show the existence of a weak solution of a semilinear elliptic Dirichlet problem on an arbitrary open set. We make no assumptions about the open set, very mild regularity assumptions on the semilinearity, plus a coerciveness assumption which depends on the optimal Poincare-Steklov constant. The proof is based on Schaefer's fixed point theorem applied to a sequence of truncated problems. We state a simple uniqueness result. We also generalize the results to Robin boundary conditions.
In this work we determine the critical exponent for a weakly coupled system of semilinear wave equations with distinct scale-invariant lower order terms, when these terms make both equations in some sense parabolic-like. For the blow-up result the test functions method is applied, while for the global existence (in time) results we use L2-L2 estimates with additional L1 regularity.
We study two-dimensional semilinear strongly damped wave equation with mixed nonlinearity $|u|^p+|u_t|^q$ in an exterior domain, where $p,q>1$. Assuming the smallness of initial data in exponentially weighted spaces and some conditions on powers of nonlinearity, we prove global (in time) existence of small data energy solution with suitable higher regularity by using a weighted energy method.
