The diagonal in a product of projective spaces is cut out by the ideal of 2x2-minors of a matrix of unknowns. The multigraded Hilbert scheme which classifies its degenerations has a unique Borel-fixed ideal. This Hilbert scheme is generally reducible, and its main component is a compactification of PGL(d)^n/PGL(d). For n=2 we recover the manifold of complete collineations. For projective lines we obtain a space of trees that is irreducible but singular. All ideals in our Hilbert scheme are radical. We also explore connections to affine buildings and Deligne schemes.
If $I=(f_1,\ldots,f_r)$ is an ideal in $S=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, and $f_i$ are "general" elements of given degrees, there is a conjecture on the Hilbert series of $S/I$. We are considering the corresponding concepts in bigraded rings.
This paper concerns the question of whether a more direct limit can be used to obtain the limit Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity, a possible candidate for a characteristic zero Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity. The main goal is to establish an affirmative answer for one of the main cases for which the limit Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity is even known to exist, namely that of graded ideals in the homogeneous coordinate ring of smooth projective curves. The proof involves more careful estimates of bounds found independently by Brenner and Trivedi on the dimensions of the cohomologies of twists of the syzygy bundl…
We discuss two conjectures by Francesco Severi and Joe Harris about the irreducibility and the dimension of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing smooth projective curves of given degree and genus.
We classify minimal-degree curves in the Hilbert schemes of points on algebraic surfaces. When the algebraic surface is the projective plane, the nef cone and a flip structure of these Hilbert schemes are determined.
We determine the automorphism group of the Hilbert scheme of two points on a generic projective K3 surface of any polarization. We obtain in particular new examples of Hilbert schemes of points having non-natural non-symplectic automorphisms. The existence of these automorphisms depends on solutions of Pell's equation.
We study Hilbert functions of certain non-reduced schemes A supported at finite sets of points in projective space, in particular, fat point schemes. We give combinatorially defined upper and lower bounds for the Hilbert function of A using nothing more than the multiplicities of the points and information about which subsets of the points are linearly dependent. When N=2, we give these bounds explicitly and we give a sufficient criterion for the upper and lower bounds to be equal. When this criterion is satisfied, we give both a simple formula for the Hilbert function and combinatorially defi…
We describe explicitly how certain standard opens of the Hilbert scheme of points are embedded into Grassmannians. The standard opens of the Hilbert scheme that we consider are given as the intersection of a corresponding basic open affine of the Grassmannian and a closed stratum determined by a Fitting ideal.
We provide a criterion for when Hilbert squares of complex projective K3 surfaces with Picard number one are strongly ambiguous. This criterion is the same as [DM, Proposition 3.14], but is obtained by a different method. In particular, this enables us to compute the automorphism groups of these Hilbert squares from a different point of view with respect to [BCNS].
This note is devoted to the study of the links between the Hilbert function of a subscheme X of the projective space, and its geometric properties. We will assume that X is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, which allows us to characterize its Hilbert function by a d integers, where d is the degree of X. We study in this context the geometric description of special linear systems of dimension maximal with respect to their degree on projective Gorenstein curves.
In this paper, we give three bases for the cohomology groups of the Hilbert scheme of two points on projective space. Then, we use these bases to compute all effective and nef cones of higher codimensional cycles on the Hilbert scheme. Next, we compute the class in one of these bases of the Chern classes of tautological bundles coming from line bundles. Finally, we provide an application of these results to the degrees of secant varieties of complete intersections.
In this paper, we study the higher codimensional cycle structure of the Hilbert scheme of three points in the projective plane. In particular, we compute all Chern (and Segre) classes of all tautological bundles on it and compute the nef (effective) cones of cycles in codimensions 2 and 3 (dimensions 2 and 3).
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 3$. Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective surface over $k$. Fix an integer $n \geq 1$ and let ${\mathcal{H}{\it ilb}}_X^n$ be the Hilbert scheme parameterizing effective $0$-cycles of length $n$ on $X$. The aim of the present article is to find the $S$-fundamental group scheme and Nori's fundamental group scheme of the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal{H}{\it ilb}_X^n$.
We seek to characterize homology classes of Lagrangian projective spaces embedded in irreducible holomorphic-symplectic manifolds, up to the action of the monodromy group. This paper addresses the case of manifolds deformation-equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length-three subschemes of a K3 surface. The class of the projective space in the cohomology ring has prescribed intersection properties, which translate into Diophantine equations. Possible homology classes correspond to integral points on an explicit elliptic curve; our proof entails showing that the only such point is two-torsion.
We study the birational geometry of deformations of Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane P2. We complete the picture in the paper of Daniele Arcara, Aaron Bertram, Izzet Coskun and Jack Huizenga by giving an explicit correspondence between the stable base locus walls on the Neron-Severi space and the actual walls on the Bridgeland stability space. We show that the birational geometry of a deformed Hilb P2 is different from that of Hilb P2.
We prove the existence of a compactly supported, continuous (except at finitely many points) function $g_{I, {\bf m}}: [0, \infty)\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ for all monomial prime ideals $I$ of $R$ of height one where $(R, {\bf m})$ is the homogeneous coordinate ring associated to a projectively normal toric pair $(X, D)$, such that $$\int_{0}^{\infty}g_{I, {\bf m}}(λ)dλ=β(I, {\bf m}),$$ where $β(I, {\bf m})$ is the second coefficient of the Hilbert-Kunz function of $I$ with respect to the maximal ideal ${\bf m}$, as proved by Huneke-McDermott-Monsky \cite{HMM2004}. Using the above result, fo…
We give a basis for the vector space generated by rational Hodge classes of type (2,2) on the Hilbert square of a projective K3 surface general in its rank, which is a subspace of the singular cohomology ring with rational coefficients: we use Nakajima operators and an algebraic model developed by Lehn and Sorger as main tools. We then obtain a basis of the lattice generated by integral Hodge classes of type (2,2) on the Hilbert square of a projective K3 surface general in its rank: we exploit lattice theory, a theorem by Qin and Wang and a result by Ellingsrud, Göttsche and Lehn.
We investigate the relationship among several numerical invariants associated to a (free) projective hypersurface $V$: the sequence of mixed multiplicities of its Jacobian ideal, the Hilbert polynomial of its Milnor algebra, and the sequence of exponents when $V$ is free. As a byproduct, we obtain explicit equations for some of the homaloidal surfaces in the projective 3-dimensional space constructed by C. Ciliberto, F. Russo and A. Simis.
For a toric pair $(X, D)$, where $X$ is a projective toric variety of dimension $d-1\geq 1$ and $D$ is a very ample $T$-Cartier divisor, we show that the Hilbert-Kunz density function $HKd(X, D)(λ)$ is the $d-1$ dimensional volume of ${\overline {\mathcal P}}_D \cap \{z= λ\}$, where ${\overline {\mathcal P}}_D\subset {\mathbb R}^d$ is a compact $d$-dimensional set (which is a finite union of convex polytopes). We also show that, for $k\geq 1$, the function $HKd(X, kD)$ can be replaced by another compactly supported continuous function $φ_{kD}$ which is `linear in $k$'. This gives the formula f…
We study the Hilbert function of a general union $X\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ of $x$ double lines and $y$ lines. In many cases (e.g. always for $x=2$ and $y\ge 3$ or for $x=3$ and $y\ge 2$ or for $x\ge 4$ and $y\ge \lceil(\binom{3x+4}{3} -27x-12)/(3x+2)\rceil +3-x$) we prove that $X$ has maximal rank. We give a few examples of $x$ and $y$ for which $X$ has not maximal rank.
In this paper we show how to combine different techniques from Commutative Algebra and a systematic use of a Computer Algebra System (in our case mainly CoCoA) in order to explicitly construct Cohen-Macaulay domains, which are standard $k$-algebras and whose Hilbert function is ``bad". In particular we disprove a well-known conjecture by Hibi.
We study automorphisms of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on a generic projective K3 surface $S$, for any $n \geq 2$. We show that the automorphism group of $S^{[n]}$ is either trivial or generated by a non-symplectic involution and we determine numerical and divisorial conditions which allow us to distinguish between the two cases. As an application of these results we prove that, for any $n \geq 2$, there exist infinite values for the degree of $S$ such that $S^{[n]}$ admits a non-natural involution. This provides a generalization of results by Boissière--Cattaneo--Nieper-Wisskirchen--Sarti…
The aim of this paper is to give an explicit extension of the classical elliptic integrals to the Hilbert modular case for $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$. We study a family of Kummer surfaces corresponding to the Humbert surface of invariant $5$ with two complex parameters. Our Kummer surface is given by a double covering of the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1:1:2)$ branched along a parabola and a quintic curve. The period mapping for our family is given by double integrals of an algebraic function on chambers coming from an arrangement of a parabola and a quintic curve in $\mathbb{C}^2$.
Let $X=X_1\cup \cdots \cup X_s\subset \mathbb {P}^n$, $n\ge 4$, be a general union of smooth non-special curves with $X_i$ of degree $d_i$ and genus $g_i$ and $d_i\ge \max \{2g_i-1,g_i+n\}$ if $g_i>0$. We prove that $X$ has maximal rank, i.e. for any $t\in \mathbb {N}$ either $h^0(\mathcal{I}_X(t))=0$ or $h^1(\mathcal{I}_X(t))=0$.
The Hilbert scheme of projective 3-folds of codimension 3 or more that are linear scrolls over the projective plane or over a smooth quadric surface or that are quadric or cubic fibrations over the projective line is studied. All known such threefolds of degree from 7 to 11 are shown to correspond to smooth points of an irreducible component of their Hilbert scheme, whose dimension is computed. A relationship with the locus of good determinantal subschemes is investigated
In this paper we prove that, for any $n\ge 3$, there exist infinitely many $r\in \N$ and for each of them a smooth, connected curve $C_r$ in $¶^r$ such that $C_r$ lies on exactly $n$ irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme $\hilb(¶^r)$. This is proven by reducing the problem to an analogous statement for the moduli of surfaces of general type.
We show that the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities of the reductions to positive characteristics of an irreducible projective curve in characteristic 0 have a well-defined limit as the characteristic tends to infinity.
The aim of this note is to exploit a new relationship between additive combinatorics and the geometry of monomial projective curves. We associate to a finite set of non-negative integers $A=\{a_1,\cdots, a_n\}$ a monomial projective curve $C_A\subset \mathbb P^{n-1}_{k}$ such that the Hilbert function of $C_A$ and the cardinalities of $sA:=\{a_{i_1}+\cdots+a_{i_s}\mid 1\le i_1\le \cdots \le i_s\le n\}$ agree. The singularities of $C_A$ determines the asymptotic behaviour of $|sA|$, equivalently the Hilbert polynomial of $C_A$, and the asymptotic structure of $sA$. We show that some additive in…
We give a short, elementary and explicit proof of the existence of Hilbert schemes of points on affine schemes. As a direct consequence we obtain the existence of the Hilbert scheme of points on any projective scheme, not necessarily of finite type, over any base scheme.
Given a finite set, $X$, of points in projective space for which the Hilbert function is known, a standard result says that there exists a subset of this finite set whose Hilbert function is ``as big as possible'' inside $X$. Given a finite set of points in projective space for which the minimal free resolution of its homogeneous ideal is known, what can be said about possible resolutions of ideals of subsets of this finite set? We first give a maximal rank type description of the most generic possible resolution of a subset. Then we show that this generic resolution is not always achieved, by…
We study the closure of the locus of radical ideals in the multigraded Hilbert scheme associated with a standard graded polynomial ring and the Hilbert function of a homogeneous coordinate ring of points in general position in projective space. In the case of projective plane, we give a sufficient condition for an ideal to be in the closure of the locus of radical ideals. For projective space of arbitrary dimension we present a necessary condition. The paper is motivated by the border apolarity lemma which connects such multigraded Hilbert schemes with the theory of ranks of polynomials.
We shall give an explicit pair of birational projective Calabi--Yau threefolds which are rigid, non-homeomorphic, but are connected by projective flat deformation over some connected base scheme.
Göttsche and Soergel gave formulas for the Hodge numbers of Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth algebraic surface and the Hodge numbers of generalized Kummer varieties. When a smooth projective surface $S$ admits an action by a finite group $G$, we describe the action of $G$ on the Hodge pieces via point counting. Each element of $G$ gives a trace on $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\sum_{i=0}^{\infty}(-1)^{i}H^{i}(S^{[n]},\mathbb{C})q^{n}$. In the case that $S$ is a K3 surface or an abelian surface, the resulting generating functions give some interesting modular forms when $G$ acts faithfully and sympl…
Let $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,r}$ be the union of irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme whose general points correspond to smooth irreducible non-degenerate curves of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\mathbb{P}^r$. We use families of curves on cones to show that under certain numerical assumptions for $d$, $g$ and $r$, the scheme $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,r}$ acquires generically smooth components whose general points correspond to curves that are double covers of irrational curves. In particular, in the case $ρ(d,g,r) := g-(r+1)(g-d+r) \geq 0$ we construct explicitly a regular component that is different …
By using the $\mathbb R$-filtration approach of Arakelov geometry, one establishes explicit upper bounds for geometric and arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel function for line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic projective varieties.
Let X be the quasi-projective symplectic surface that is given by the total space of the invertible sheaf O(-2) over the projective line. Let Hilb X be the family of Hilbert schemes of points on X. We give and prove a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on the Hilb X in terms of the standard Fock space description of the cohomology of the Hilb X. As a side result, we also deduce a formula for the Chern character of the tangent bundles of the Hilb X. The results found here are another step towards a complete description of the tangent bundle of the Hilber…
The Hilbert scheme $X^{[3]}$ of length-$3$ subschemes of a smooth projective variety $X$ is known to be smooth and projective. We investigate whether the property of having a multiplicative Chow-Kuenneth decomposition is stable under taking the Hilbert cube. This is achieved by considering an explicit resolution of the map $X^3 \dashrightarrow X^{[3]}$. The case of the Hilbert square was taken care of in previous work of ours. The archetypical examples of varieties endowed with a multiplicative Chow-Kuenneth decomposition is given by abelian varieties. Recent work seems to suggest that hyperKa…
We take a new look at the curvilinear Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth projective variety $X$ as a projective completion of the non-reductive quotient of holomorphic map germs from the complex line into $X$ by polynomial reparametrisations. Using an algebraic model of this quotient coming from global singularity theory we develop an iterated residue formula for tautological integrals over curvilinear Hilbert schemes.
The cohomology of the Hilbert schemes of points on smooth projective surfaces can be approached both with vertex algebra tools and equivariant tools. Using the first tool, we study the existence and the structure of universal formulas for the Chern classes of the tangent bundle over the Hilbert scheme of points on a projective surface. The second tool leads then to nice generating formulas in the particular case of the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane.
We make a systematic study of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for different notions of stability for polarised algebraic varieties $(X,L)$; in particular for K- and Chow stability. For each type of stability this leads to a concept of slope $μ$ for varieties and their subschemes; if $(X,L)$ is semistable then $μ(Z)\leμ(X)$ for all $Z\subset X$. We give examples such as curves, canonical models and Calabi-Yaus. We prove various foundational technical results towards understanding the converse, leading to partial results; in particular this gives a geometric (rather than combinatorial) proof of th…
We generalize the classical Hilbert-Mumford criteria for GIT (semi-)stability in terms of one parameter subgroups of a linearly reductive group G over a field k, to the relative situation of an equivariant, projective morphism X -> Spec A to a noetherian k-algebra A. We also extend the classical projectivity result for GIT quotients: the induced morphism X^ss/G -> Spec A^G is projective. As an example of applications to moduli problems, we consider degenerations of Hilbert schemes of points.

We prove Conjecture 4.16 of the paper [EL21] of Elagin and Lunts; namely, that a smooth projective curve of genus at least 1 over a field has diagonal dimension 2.
We obtain a formula for the generating series of (the push-forward under the Hilbert-Chow morphism of) the Hirzebruch homology characteristic classes of the Hilbert schemes of points for a smooth quasi-projective variety of arbitrary pure dimension. This result is based on a geometric construction of a motivic exponentiation generalizing the notion of motivic power structure, as well as on a formula for the generating series of the Hirzebruch homology characteristic classes of symmetric products. We apply the same methods for the calculation of generating series formulae for the Hirzebruch cla…
The power structure over the Grothendieck (semi)ring of complex quasi-projective varieties constructed by the authors is used to express the generating series of classes of Hilbert schemes of zero-dimensional subschemes on a smooth quasi-projective variety as an exponent of that for the complex affine space of the same dimension. Specializations of this relation give formulae for generating series of such invariants of the Hilbert schemes of points as the Euler characteristic and the Hodge-Deligne polynomial.
The generalisation of the well-known (Hilbert polynomial) criterion for flatness of a projective morphism of Noetherian schemes is given for the case of nonreduced base of the morphism.
