The cohomology of the Hilbert schemes of points on smooth projective surfaces can be approached both with vertex algebra tools and equivariant tools. Using the first tool, we study the existence and the structure of universal formulas for the Chern classes of the tangent bundle over the Hilbert scheme of points on a projective surface. The second tool leads then to nice generating formulas in the particular case of the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane.
We first describe the tangent space to the affine flag manifold associated to a simple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$ at the distinguished point starting from standard definitions. We then construct projective lines in the affine flag manifold tangent to given root vectors associated to imaginary roots of the corresponding affine Kac-Moody algebra and describe in which Schubert varieties they lie.
We examine the tangent groups at the identity, and more generally the formal completions at the identity, of the Chow groups of algebraic cycles on a nonsingular quasiprojective algebraic variety over a field of characteristic zero. We settle a question recently raised by Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths concerning the existence of Bloch-Gersten-Quillen-type resolutions of algebraic K-theory sheaves on infinitesimal thickenings of nonsingular varieties, and the relationships between these sequences and their "tangent sequences," expressed in terms of absolute Kähler differentials. More general…
The present article studies the finite Zariski tangent spaces to an affine variety X as linear codes, in order to characterize their typical or exceptional properties by global geometric conditions on X. The discussion concerns the generic minimum distance of a tangent code to X, its lower semi-continuity under a deformation of X, as well as the existence of Zariski tangent spaces to X with exceptional minimum distance. Tangent codes are shown to admit simultaneous decoding. The duals of the tangent codes to X are realized by gradients of polynomials from the ideal of X. We provide constructio…
We prove the Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality conjectured by Bayer, Macri and Toda for threefolds with semistable tangent bundles and vanishing Chern classes in any characteristic, which was originally proved by Bayer, Macri and Stellari in characteristic zero. This gives the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on such threefolds. As applications, we obtain Reider type theorem and confirm Fujita's conjecture for such threefolds in any characteristic.
We show that through a point of an affine variety there always exists a smooth plane curve inside the ambient affine space, which has the multiplicity of intersection with the variety at least 3. This result has an application to the study of affine schemes.
We introduce a class extending the notion of Chern-Mather class to possibly nonreduced schemes, and use it to express the difference between Schwartz-MacPherson's Chern class and the class of the virtual tangent bundle of a singular hypersurface of a nonsingular variety. Applications include constraints on the possible singularities of a hypersurface and on contacts of nonsingular hypersurfaces, and multiplicity computations.
We show that the tangent bundle of a projective manifold with nef anticanonical class is generically nef. That is, its restriction to a curve cut out by general sufficiently ample divisors is a nef vector bundle. This confirms a conjecture of Peternell. As a consequence, the second Chern class of such a manifold has non-negative intersections with ample divisors. We also investigate under which conditions these positivities are strict, and answer a question of Yau.
We compute the Bott-Chern classes of the metric Euler sequence describing the relative tangent bundle of the variety P(E) of hyperplans of a holomorphic hermitian vector bundle (E,h) on a complex manifold. We give applications to the construction of the arithmetic characteristic classes of an arithmetic vector bundle and to the computation of the height of P(E) with respect to the tautological quotient bundle O_E(1).
We study motivic Chern classes of cones. First we show examples of projective cones of smooth curves such that their various $K$-classes (sheaf theoretic, push-forward and motivic) are all different. Then we show connections between the torus equivariant motivic Chern class of a projective variety and of its affine cone, generalizing results on projective Thom polynomials.
In this article, we give numerical restrictions on the Chern classes of Ulrich bundles on higher-dimensional manifolds, which are inspired by the results of Casnati in the case of surfaces. As a by-product, we prove that the only projective manifolds whose tangent bundle is Ulrich are the twisted cubic and the Veronese surface. Moreover, we prove that the cotangent bundle is never Ulrich.
If $n \equiv 0,1~mod~4$, we prove a sum formula $V_{θ_{0}} (a_{0},a_{R}^{n}) = n \cdot V_{θ_{0}} (a_{0},a_{R})$ for the generalized Vaserstein symbol whenever $R$ is a smooth affine algebra over a perfect field $k$ with $char(k) \neq 2$ such that $-1 \in {k^{\times}}^{2}$. This enables us to generalize a result of Fasel-Rao-Swan on transformations of unimodular rows via elementary matrices over normal affine algebras of dimension $d \geq 4$ over algebraically closed fields of characteristic $\neq 2$. As a consequence, we prove that any projective module of rank $3$ with trivial Chern classes o…
The purpose of this paper is to study the Zariski tangent space of the punctual Hilbert scheme parametrizing subschemes of a smooth surface which are supported at a single point. We give a lower bound on the dimension of the tangent space in general and show the bound is sharp for subschemes of the affine plane cut out by monomials. Furthermore for monomial subschemes we give an explicit combinatorial formula for the dimension of the tangent space.
\noindent We study the Zariski tangent cone $T_X\stackrelπ{\lar} X$ to an affine variety $X$ and the closure $\bar{T}_X$ of $π^{-1}({\rm Reg}(X))$ in $T_X$. We focus on the comparison between $T_X$ and $\bar{T}_X$, giving sufficient conditions on $X$ in order that $T_X=\bar{T}_X$. One aspect of the results is to understand when this equality takes place in the presence of the reducedness of the Zariski tangent cone. Our other interest is to consider conditions on $X$ in order that $\bar{T}_X$ be normal or/and Cohen--Macaulay, and to prove that they are met by several classes of affine varietie…
In this paper we aim at the description of foliations having tangent sheaf $T\mathcal F$ with $c_1(T\mathcal F)=c_2(T\mathcal F)=0$ on non-uniruled projective manifolds. We prove that the universal covering of the ambient manifold splits as a product, and that the Zariski closure of a general leaf of $\mathcal F$ is an Abelian variety. It turns out that the analytic type of the Zariski closures of leaves may vary from leaf to leaf. We discuss how this variation is related to arithmetic properties of the tangent sheaf of the foliation.
Let us consider a generic n-dimensional subbundle V of the tangent bundle TM on some given manifold M. Given V one can define different degeneracy loci S_r(CV), r=(r_1<= r_2<= r_3<=...<=r_k) on M consisting of all points x in M for which the dimension of the subspace V^j(x) in TM(x) spanned by all length <= j commutators of vector fields tangent to V at x is less than or equal to r_j. We calculate 'explicitly' the cohomology classes dual to S_r(V) using determinantal formulas due to W.Fulton and the expression for the Chern classes of the associated bundle of free Lie algebras in terms of the …
We construct connections and characteristic forms for principal bundles over groupoids and stacks in the differentiable, holomorphic and algebraic category using Atiyah sequences associated to transversal tangential distributions.
This is a reproduction of my thesis. By using higher K-theory(Chern character, cyclic homology, effacement theorem and etc), we provide an answer to a question by Green- Griffiths which says the tangent sequence to Bloch-Gersten-Quillen sequence is Cousin resolution.
Unitary representations of the fundamental group of a Kahler manifold correspond to polystable vector bundles (with vanishing Chern classes). Semisimple linear representations correspond to polystable Higgs bundles. In this paper we find the objects corresponding to affine representations: the linear part gives a Higgs bundle and the translation part corresponds to an element of a generalized de Rham cohomology.
Let $M$ be a smooth Fano threefold such that a canonical extension of the tangent bundle is an affine manifold. We show that $M$ is rational homogeneous.
We obtain A- and B- series of flag manifolds for T-equivariant tangent bundles and equivariant Chern polynomial following the arguments of Lian, Liu, Yau.
We give an algorithmic description of the action of the Chern classes of tautological bundles on the cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces within the framework of Nakajima's oscillator algebra. This leads to an identification of the cohomology ring of Hilbert schemes of the affine plane with a ring of differential operators on a Fock space. We end with the computation of the top Segre classes of tautological bundles associated to line bundles on Hilb^n up to n=7, and give a conjecture for the generating series.
We extend the formula for the Chern classes of blow-ups of algebraic varieties due to Porteous and Lascu-Scott, and of symplectic and complex manifolds due to Geiges and Pasquotto, to the blow-ups of almost complex manifolds. Our approach is based on a concrete partition for the tangent bundle of a blow-up. The use of topological K-theory of vector bundles simplifies the classical approaches.
Let $G$ be a connected affine algebraic group and $X$ a regular $G$-variety (in the sense of Bifet-De Concini-Procesi) with open orbit $G/H$ and boundary divisor $D$. We show the vanishing of the $G$-equivariant Chern classes of the bundle of differential forms on $X$ with logarithmic poles along $D$, in degrees larger than $\dim(X) - \rk(G) + \rk(H)$. Our motivation comes from Gieseker's degeneration method to prove the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture on the vanishing of the top Chern classes of the moduli space of stable vector bundles on a curve.
In this paper, I construct noncompact analogs of the Chern classes of equivariant vector bundles over complex reductive groups. For the tangent bundle, these Chern classes yield an adjunction formula for the Euler characteristic of complete intersections in reductive groups. In the case where the complete intersection is a curve, this formula gives an explicit answer for the Euler characteristic and the genus of the curve.
Our previous papers introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, show that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and establish a topological smoothability criterion for normal crossings symplectic varieties. The present paper constructs a blowup, a complex line bundle, and a logarithmic tangent bundle naturally associated with a normal crossings symplectic divisor and determines the Chern class of the last bundle. These structures hav applications in constructions and analysis of various moduli spaces. As a coroll…
We give a negative answer to a question posed by Severi in 1951, whether the Abelian Varieties are the only projective manifolds with trivial Chern classes. By Yau' s celebrated result, compact Kähler manifolds with trivial Chern classes must be flat, that is, they belong to the class of Hyperelliptic Manifolds (quotients $T/G$ of a complex torus $T$ by the free action of a finite group $G$). We exhibit simple examples of projective Hyperelliptic Manifolds which are not Abelian varieties and whose Chern classes are zero not only in integral cohomology, but also in the Chow ring. We prove moreo…
We describe the equivariant Chow ring of the wonderful compactification $X$ of a symmetric space of minimal rank, via restriction to the associated toric variety $Y$. Also, we show that the restrictions to $Y$ of the tangent bundle $T_X$ and its logarithmic analogue $S_X$ decompose into a direct sum of line bundles. This yields closed formulae for the equivariant Chern classes of $T_X$ and $S_X$, and, in turn, for the Chern classes of reductive groups considered by Kiritchenko.
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler space with klt singularities and vanishing first Chern class. We prove the Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors on the smooth locus of $X$: any such tensor is parallel with respect to the singular Ricci-flat metrics. As a consequence, after a finite quasi-étale cover $X$ splits off a complex torus of the maximum possible dimension. We then proceed to decompose the tangent sheaf of $X$ according to its holonomy representation. In particular, we classify those $X$ which have strongly stable tangent sheaf: up to quasi-étale covers, these are either irreducible Cal…
Let $MI_{Simp,P^{2n+1}}(k)$ be the moduli space of stable symplectic instanton bundles on $P^{2n+1}$ with second Chern class $c_2=k$ (it is a closed subscheme of the moduli space $MI_{P^{2n+1}}(k)$), We prove that the dimension of its Zariski tangent space at a special (symplectic) instanton bundle is $2k(5n-1)+4n^2-10n+3, k\geq 2$. It follows that special symplectic instanton bundles are smooth points for $ k \leq 3 $
Let $C({\bf n})$ be a complete intersection monomial curve in the 4-dimensional affine space. In this paper we study the complete intersection property of the monomial curve $C({\bf n}+w{\bf v})$, where $w>0$ is an integer and ${\bf v} \in \mathbb{N}^{4}$. Also we investigate the Cohen-Macaulayness of the tangent cone of $C({\bf n}+w{\bf v})$.
We compute the generating series for the intersection pairings between the total Chern classes of the tangent bundles of the Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth projective surface and the Chern characters of tautological bundles over these Hilbert schemes. Modulo the lower weight term, we verify Okounkov's conjecture [Oko] connecting these Hilbert schemes and multiple $q$-zeta values. In addition, this conjecture is completely proved when the surface is abelian. We also determine some universal constants in the sense of Boissi\' ere and Nieper-Wisskirchen [Boi, BN] regarding the total Chern …

The classification of affine line bundles on a compact complex space $X$ is a difficult problem. We study the affine analogue of the Picard functor and the representability problem for this functor. For a fixed Chern class $c$, we introduce the affine Picard functor $Picaff_{X,x_0}^c:An^{op}\to Set$ which assigns to a complex space $T$ the set of families of linearly $x_0$-framed affine line bundles on $X$ with Chern class $c$ parameterized by $T$. Our main result states that this functor is representable if and only if the map $h^0:Pic^c(X)\to\mathbb{N}$ is constant. If this is the case, the …
We calculate the Chern classes and Chern numbers for the natural almost Hermitian structures of the partial flag manifolds F_n=SU(n+2)/S(U(n)\times U(1)\times U(1)). For all n>1 there are two invariant complex algebraic structures, which arise from the projectivizations of the holomorphic tangent and cotangent bundles of complex projective spaces. The projectivization of the cotangent bundle is the twistor space of a Grassmannian considered as a quaternionic Kähler manifold. There is also an invariant nearly Kähler structure, because F_n is a 3-symmetric space. We explain the relations between…
Let $G$ be an almost simple simply-connected affine algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$. If $G$ has type $B_n$, $C_n$ or $F_4$, we assume that $p > 2$, and if $G$ has type $G_2$, we assume that $p > 3$. Let $P \subset G$ be a parabolic subgroup. We prove that the tangent bundle of $G/P$ is Frobenius stable with respect to the anticanonical polarization on $G/P$.
Laumon moduli spaces are certain smooth closures of the moduli spaces of maps from the projective line to the flag variety of $GL_n$. We construct the action of the Yangian of $sl_n$ in the cohomology of Laumon spaces by certain natural correspondences. We construct the action of the affine Yangian (two-parametric deformation of the universal enveloping algebra of the universal central extension of $sl_n[s^{\pm1},t]$) in the cohomology of the affine version of Laumon spaces. We compute the matrix coefficients of the generators of the affine Yangian in the fixed point basis of cohomology. This …
Using compactifications in the logarithmic cotangent bundle, we obtain a formula for the Chern classes of the pushforward of Lagrangian cycles under an open embedding with normal crossing complement. This generalizes earlier results of Aluffi and Wu-Zhou. The first application of our formula is a geometric description of Chern-Mather classes of an arbitrary very affine variety, generalizing earlier results of Huh which held under the smooth and schon assumptions. As the second application, we confirm an involution formula relating sectional maximum likelihood (ML) degrees and ML bidegrees, whi…
In this paper we formalize and prove a conjecture of Braverman concerning integrals of the Chern polynomial of the tangent bundle to affine Laumon spaces. This provides the computation of the Nekrasov partition function of N = 2 gauge theory with adjoint matter on C^2 in the Omega background, in the presence of a full surface operator insertion
Let d_{k,n} and #_{k,n} denote the dimension and the degree of the Grassmannian G_{k,n} of k-planes in projective n-space, respectively. For each k between 1 and n-2 there are 2^{d_{k,n}} \cdot #_{k,n} (a priori complex) k-planes in P^n tangent to d_{k,n} general quadratic hypersurfaces in P^n. We show that this class of enumerative problem is fully real, i.e., for each k between 1 and n-2 there exists a configuration of d_{k,n} real quadrics in (affine) real space R^n so that all the mutually tangent k-flats are real.
We describe dualities and complexes of logarithmic forms and differentials for central affine and corresponding projective arrangements. We generalize the Borel-Serre formula from vector bundles to sheaves on projective d-space with locally free resolutions of length one. Combining these results we present a generalization of a formula due to Mustata and Schenck, relating the Poincare polynomial of an arrangement in projective 3-space (or a locally tame arrangement in projective d-space with zero-dimensional non-free locus) to the total Chern polynomial of its sheaf of logarithmic 1-forms.
We study Alexeev and Brion's moduli scheme $M_Γ$ of affine spherical varieties with weight monoid $Γ$ under the assumption that $Γ$ is free. We describe the tangent space to $M_Γ$ at its `most degenerate point' in terms of the combinatorial invariants of spherical varieties and deduce that the irreducible components of $M_Γ$, equipped with their reduced induced scheme structure, are affine spaces.
We give explicit MacPherson cycles for the Chern-MacPherson class of a closed affine algebraic variety $X$ and for any constructible function $α$ with respect to a complex algebraic Whitney stratification of $X$. We define generalized degrees of the global polar varieties and of the MacPherson cycles and we prove a global index formula for the Euler characteristic of $α$. Whenever $α$ is the Euler obstruction of $X$, this index formula specializes to the Seade-Tibar-Verjovsky global counterpart of the Le-Teissier formula for the local Euler obstruction.
