We study motivic Chern classes of cones. First we show examples of projective cones of smooth curves such that their various $K$-classes (sheaf theoretic, push-forward and motivic) are all different. Then we show connections between the torus equivariant motivic Chern class of a projective variety and of its affine cone, generalizing results on projective Thom polynomials.
We study a K-theoretic characteristic class of singular varieties, namely the equivariant motivic Chern class. We prove that the motivic Chern class is characterized by an axiom system inspired by that of "K-theoretic stable envelopes," recently defined by Okounkov and studied in relation with quantum group actions on the K-theory algebra of moduli spaces. We also give explicit formulas for the equivariant motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells and matrix Schubert cells. Lastly, we calculate the equivariant motivic Chern class of the orbits of the A2 quiver representation, which yields formul…
We consider a complex smooth projective variety equipped with an action of an algebraic torus with a finite number of fixed points. We compare the motivic Chern classes of Białynicki-Birula cells with the $K$-theoretic stable envelopes of cotangent bundle. We prove that under certain geometric assumptions satisfied e.g. by homogenous spaces these two notions coincide up to normalization.
We calculate the equivariant motivic Chern class for configuration space of a quasiprojective (maybe singular) variety and the space of vectors with different directions. We prove the formulas for generating series of these classes. We generalize the localization theorems results about Bialynicki-Birula decomposition to acquire some stability for the motivic Chern classes of configuration spaces.
In this paper we give a proof of the fact, that the motivic Hodge-Chern class transformation MHC_y and Hirzebruch class transformation MHT_y* for mixed Hodge modules and strictly specializable filtered D-modules commute with specialization in the algebraic and in a suitable complex analytic context. Here specialization in the Hodge- and D-module context means the corresponding nearby cycles defined in terms of the $V$-filtration of Malgrange-Kashiwara. This generalizes a corresponding specialization result of Verdier about MacPherson's Chern class transformation c_*.
We present a definition of {\em twisted motivic Chern classes} for singular pairs $(X,Δ)$ consisting of a singular space $X$ and a $\mathbb Q$-Cartier divisor containing the singularities of $X$. The definition is a mixture of the construction of motivic Chern classes previously defined by Brasselet-Sch{ü}rmann-Yokura with the construction of multiplier ideals. The twisted motivic Chern classes are the limits of the elliptic classes defined by Borisov-Libgober. We show that with a suitable choice of the divisor $Δ$ the twisted motivic Chern classes satisfy the axioms of the stable envelopes in…
Chern classes of proalgebraic varieties and motivic measures
Motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes are polynomials with K-theory and homology classes as coefficients, which specialize to Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, K-theory classes, and Cappell-Shaneson L-classes. We provide formulas to compute the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes of Grassmannian and vexillary degeneracy loci. We apply our results to obtain the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus of classical and one-pointed Brill-Noether varieties, and therefore their topological Euler characteristic, holomorphic Euler characteristic, and signature.
We construct an analog of the intrinsic normal cone of Behrend-Fantechi in the equivariant motivic stable homotopy category over a base-scheme B and construct a fundament class in E-cohomology for any cohomology theory E in SH(B). For affine B, a perfect obstruction theory gives rise to a virtual fundamental class in a twisted Borel-Moore E-homology for arbitrary E. This includes motivic cohomology (homotopy invariant) K-theory algebraic cobordism and the oriented Chow groups of Barge-Morel and Fasel. In the case of motivic cohomology, we recover the constructions of Behrend-Fantechi, with val…
In this paper, we construct Chern classes from the relative $K$-theory of modulus pairs to the relative motivic cohomology defined by Binda-Saito. An application to relative motivic cohomology of henselian dvr is given.
We develop a theory of local densities and tangent cones in a motivic framework, extending work by Cluckers-Comte-Loeser about $p$-adic local density. We prove some results about geometry of definable sets in Henselian valued fields of characteristic zero, both in semi-algebraic and subanalytic languages, and study Lipschitz continuous maps between such sets. We prove existence of regular stratifications satisfying analogous of Verdier condition $(w_f)$. Using Cluckers-Loeser theory of motivic integration, we define a notion of motivic local density with values in the Grothendieck ring of the …
We prove a `motivic' analogue of the Weyl character formula, computing the Euler characteristic of a line bundle on a generalized flag manifold $G/B$ multiplied either by a motivic Chern class of a Schubert cell, or a Segre analogue of it. The result, given in terms of Demazure-Lusztig (D-L) operators, recovers formulas found by Brubaker, Bump and Licata for the Iwahori-Whittaker functions of the principal series representation of a $p$-adic group. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the classical Casselman-Shalika formula for the spherical Whittaker function. The proofs are based on local…
The Milnor class is a generalization of the Milnor number, defined as the difference (up to sign) of Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson's class and Fulton--Johnson's canonical Chern class of a local complete intersection variety in a smooth variety. In this paper we introduce a "motivic" Grothendieck group $K^{\mathcal Prop}_{\ell.c.i}(\mathcal V/X \to S)$ and natural transformations from this Grothendieck group to the homology theory. We capture the Milnor class, more generally Hirzebruch--Milnor class, as a special value of a distinguished element under these natural transformations. We also show a…
Consider a complex algebraic group $G$ acting on a smooth variety $M$ with finitely many orbits, and let $Ω$ be an orbit. The following three invariants of $Ω\subset M$ can be characterized axiomatically: (1) the equivariant fundamental class $[\overlineΩ, M]\in H^*_G(M)$, (2) the equivariant Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class $c(Ω, M)\in H^*_G(M)$, and (3) the equivariant motivic Chern class $mC(Ω, M) \in K_G(M)[y]$. The axioms for Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson and motivic Chern classes are motivated by the axioms for cohomological and K-theoretic stable envelopes of Okounkov and his coauthors. For …
Using symmetrized Grassmannians we give an algebraic geometric presentation, in the level of classifying spaces, of the Chern character and its relation to Chern classes. This allows one to define, for any projective variety $X$, a Chern character map from the "holomorphic K-theory of X to its morphic cohomology (introduced by Friedlander and Lawson). The holomorphic K-theory of $X$, introduced by Lawson, Lima-Filho and Michelsohn and also by Friedlander and Walker, is defined in terms a group-completion of the space of algebraic morphisms from X into BU. It has been further studied by the aut…
Let K_0(V/X) be the relative Grothendieck group of varieties over X in obj(V), with V the category of (quasi-projective) algebraic (resp. compact complex analytic) varieties over a base field k. Then we constructed the motivic Hirzebruch class transformation in the algebraic context for k of characteristic zero and in the compact complex analytic context. It unifies the well-known three characteristic class transformations of singular varieties: MacPherson's Chern class, Baum-Fulton-MacPherson's Todd class and the L-class of Goresky-MacPherson and Cappell-Shaneson. In this paper we construct a…
Fix a Chern character of a stable sheaf on the plane. Assume either the rank is at most 6 or the rank and first Chern class are coprime and the discriminant is sufficiently large. We use recent results of Bayer and Macri on Bridgeland stability to compute the ample cone of the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves with the given Chern character. We recover earlier results, such as those by Stromme and Yoshioka, as special cases.
The equivariant Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) class and the equivariant Motivic Chern (MC) class are important characteristic classes of singular varieties in cohomology and K theory---and their theory overlaps with the theory of Okounkov's stable envelopes. We study CSM and MC classes for the orbits of Dynkin quiver representations. We show that the problem of computing the CSM and MC classes of all these orbits can be reduced to some basic classes $c^o_β$, $C^o_β$ parameterized by positive roots $β$. We prove an identity in a deformed version of Kontsevich-Soibelman's Cohomological (and K-…
Characteristic classes of proalgebraic varieties and motivic measures
We obtain a formula for the generating series of (the push-forward under the Hilbert-Chow morphism of) the Hirzebruch homology characteristic classes of the Hilbert schemes of points for a smooth quasi-projective variety of arbitrary pure dimension. This result is based on a geometric construction of a motivic exponentiation generalizing the notion of motivic power structure, as well as on a formula for the generating series of the Hirzebruch homology characteristic classes of symmetric products. We apply the same methods for the calculation of generating series formulae for the Hirzebruch cla…
This paper sets out basic properties of motivic twisted K-theory with respect to degree three motivic cohomology classes of weight one. Motivic twisted K-theory is defined in terms of such motivic cohomology classes by taking pullbacks along the universal principal BG_m-bundle for the classifying space of the multiplicative group scheme. We show a Kuenneth isomorphism for homological motivic twisted K-groups computing the latter as a tensor product of K-groups over the K-theory of BG_m. The proof employs an Adams Hopf algebroid and a tri-graded Tor-spectral sequence for motivic twisted K-theor…
Let $ξ$ be a stable Chern character on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, and let $M(ξ)$ be the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$ with Chern character $ξ$. In this paper, we provide an approach to computing the effective cone of $M(ξ)$ after showing that it is a Mori dream space for all $ξ$. We find Brill-Noether divisors spanning extremal rays of the effective cone using resolutions of the general elements of $M(ξ)$ which are found using the machinery of exceptional bundles. We use this approach to provide many examples of extremal rays in thes…
In this survey paper we review recent advances in the calculus of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson, motivic Chern, and elliptic classes of classical Schubert varieties. These three theories are one-parameter ($\hbar$) deformations of the notion of fundamental class in their respective extraordinary cohomology theories. Examining these three classes in conjunction is justified by their relation to Okounkov's stable envelope notion. We review formulas for the $\hbar$-deformed classes originating from Tarasov-Varchenko weight functions, as well as their orthogonality relations. As a consequence, explici…
Here we consider higher Chern classes of vector bundles of conformal blocks on $\overline{\operatorname{M}}_{0,n}$, giving explicit formulas for them, and extending various results that hold for first Chern classes to them. We use these classes to form a full dimensional subcone of the Pliant cone on $\overline{\operatorname{M}}_{0,n}$.
We show that classical Chern classes from higher ($p$-adic) $K$-theory to syntomic cohomology extend to logarithmic syntomic cohomology. These Chern classes are compatible -- in a suitable sense -- with addition, products, and $λ$-operations. They are also compatible with the canonical Gysin sequences and, via period maps, with logarithmic étale Chern classes. Moreover, they induce logarithmic crystalline Chern classes. This uses as a critical new ingredient the recent comparison of syntomic cohomology with $p$-adic nearby cycles and $p$-adic motivic cohomology.
We relate the recognition principle for infinite $\mathbf P^1$-loop spaces to the theory of motivic fundamental classes of Déglise, Jin, and Khan. We first compare two kinds of transfers that are naturally defined on cohomology theories represented by motivic spectra: the framed transfers given by the recognition principle, which arise from Voevodsky's computation of the Nisnevish sheaf associated with $\mathbf A^n/(\mathbf A^n-0)$, and the Gysin transfers defined via Verdier's deformation to the normal cone. We then introduce the category of finite E-correspondences for E a motivic ring spect…
We observe that linear relations among Chern-Mather classes of projective varieties are preserved by projective duality. We deduce the existence of an explicit involution on a part of the Chow group of projective space, encoding the effect of duality on Chern-Mather classes. Applications include Plücker formulae, constraints on self-dual varieties, generalizations to singular varieties of classical formulas for the degree of the dual and the dual defect, formulas for the Euclidean distance degree, and computations of Chern-Mather classes and local Euler obstructions for cones.
The Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) and motivic Chern (mC) classes of Schubert cells in a Grassmannian are one parameter deformations of the fundamental classes of the Schubert varieties in cohomology and K-theory respectively. Like the fundamental classes, the deformed classes form a basis for the cohomology and K-theory ring of the Grassmannian. The purpose of this paper is to initiate the study of the structure constants associated to the basis CSM and mC classes in terms of the combinatorics of polynomials. First, we prove formulas for the structure constants of projective spaces that invo…
We construct the étale motivic Borel-Moore homology of derived Artin stacks. Using a derived version of the intrinsic normal cone, we construct fundamental classes of quasi-smooth derived Artin stacks and demonstrate functoriality, base change, excess intersection, and Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formulas. These classes also satisfy a general cohomological Bézout theorem which holds without any transversity hypotheses. The construction is new even for classical stacks and as one application we extend Gabber's proof of the absolute purity conjecture to Artin stacks.
The relative Grothendieck group $K_0(\m V/X)$ is the free abelian group generated by the isomorphism classes of complex algebraic varieties over $X$ modulo the "scissor relation". The motivic Hirzebruch class ${T_y}_*: K_0(\m V /X) \to H_*^{BM}(X) \otimes \bQ[y]$ is a unique natural transformation satisfying that for a nonsingular variety $X$ the value ${T_y}_*([X \xrightarrow {\op {id}_X} X])$ of the isomorphism class of the identity $X \xrightarrow {id_X} X$ is the Poincaré dual of the Hirzebruch cohomology class of the tangent bundle $TX$. It "unifies" the well-known three characteristic cl…
In this paper we compute the motivic Chern classes and homology Hirzebruch characteristic classes of (possibly singular) toric varieties, which in the complete case fit nicely with a generalized Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem. As special cases, we obtain new (or recover well-known) formulae for the Baum-Fulton-MacPherson Todd (or MacPherson-Chern) classes of toric varieties, as well as for the Thom-Milnor L-classes of simplicial projective toric varieties. We present two different perspectives for the computation of these characteristic classes of toric varieties. First, we take advantage of …
Let M be a smooth complex projective variety, bearing a Kähler symplectic form ωand a Hamiltonian action of a torus T, with finitely many fixed points M^T. One standard form of the Duistermaat-Heckman theorem gives a formula for M's Duistermaat-Heckman measure DH_T(M,ω) as an alternating sum of projections of cones, with overall direction determined by a Morse decomposition of M. Using Victor Ginzburg's construction of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, we show that these individual cone terms can themselves be interpreted as Duistermaat-Heckman measures of cycles in T^*M. (This has a similar …
In this paper we prove that given a pair $(X,D)$ of a threefold $X$ and a boundary divisor $D$ with mild singularities, if $(K_X+D)$ is movable, then the orbifold second Chern class $c_2$ of $(X,D)$ is pseudo-effective. This generalizes the classical result of Miyaoka on the pseudo-effectivity of $c_2$ for minimal models. As an application we give a simple solution to Kawamata's effective non-vanishing conjecture in dimension $3$, where we prove that $H^0(X, K_X+H)\neq 0$, whenever $K_X+H$ is nef and $H$ is an ample, effective, reduced Cartier divisor. Furthermore, we study Lang-Vojta's conjec…
In this paper we give an introduction to our recent work on characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces based on some talks given at conferences in Strasbourg, Oberwolfach and Kagoshima. We explain the relation between nearby cycles for constructible functions or sheaves as well as for (relative) Grothendieck groups of algebraic varieties and mixed Hodge modules, and the specialization of characteristic classes of singular spaces like the Chern-, Todd-, Hirzebruch- and motivic Chern-classes. As an application we get a description of the differences between the corresponding virtual and fun…
For a proper local embedding between two Deligne--Mumford stacks Y and X, we find, under certain mild conditions, a new (possibly non-separated) Deligne--Mumford stack X', with an etale, surjective and universally closed map to the target X, and whose fiber product with the image of the local embedding is a finite union of stacks with corresponding etale, surjective and universally closed maps to Y. Moreover, a natural set of weights on the substacks of X' allows the construction of a universally closed push-forward, and thus a comparison between the Chow groups of X' and X. We apply the const…
Let (X,H) be a polarized, smooth, complex projective surface, and let v be a Chern character on X with positive rank and sufficiently large discriminant. In this paper, we compute the Gieseker wall for v in a slice of the stability manifold of X. We construct explicit curves parameterizing non-isomorphic Gieseker stable sheaves that become S-equivalent along the wall. As a corollary, we conclude that if there are no strictly semistable sheaves of character v, the Bayer-Macri divisor associated to the wall is a boundary nef divisor on the moduli space of sheaves M_H(v). We recover previous resu…
