Michael Gromov has recently initiated what he calls ``symbolic algebraic geometry", in which objects are proalgebraic varieties: a proalgebraic variety is by definition the projective limit of a projective system of algebraic varieties. In this paper we construct Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes of proalgebraic varieties, by introducing the notion of ``proconstructible functions " and "$χ$-stable proconstructible functions" and using the Fulton-MacPherson's Bivariant Theory. As a "motivic" version of a $χ$-stable proconstructible function, $\Ga$-stable constructible functions are introduced. This construction naturally generalizes the so-called motivic measure and motivic integration. For the Nash arc space $\Cal L(X)$ of an algebraic variety $X$, the proconstructible set is equivalent to the so-called cylinder set or constructible set in the arc space.
Michael Gromov has recently initiated what he calls ``symbolic algebraic geometry", in which objects are proalgebraic varieties: a proalgebraic variety is by definition the projective limit of a projective system of algebraic varieties. In this paper we introduce characteristic classes of proalgebraic varieties, using Grothendieck transformations of Fulton--MacPherson's Bivariant Theory, modeled on the construction of MacPherson's Chern class transformation of proalgebraic varieties. We show that a proalgebraic version of the Euler--Poincaré characteristic with values in the Grothendieck ring …
We calculate the equivariant motivic Chern class for configuration space of a quasiprojective (maybe singular) variety and the space of vectors with different directions. We prove the formulas for generating series of these classes. We generalize the localization theorems results about Bialynicki-Birula decomposition to acquire some stability for the motivic Chern classes of configuration spaces.
A theory of characteristic classes of vector bundles and smooth manifolds plays an important role in the theory of smooth manifolds. An investigation of reasonable notions of characteristic classes of singular spaces started since a systematic study of singular spaces such as singular algebraic varieties. We make a quick survey of characteristic classes of singular varieties, mainly focusing on the functorial aspects of some important ones such as the singular versions of the Chern class, the Todd class and the Thom--Hirzebruch's L-class. Then we explain our recent "motivic" characteristic cla…
We study motivic Chern classes of cones. First we show examples of projective cones of smooth curves such that their various $K$-classes (sheaf theoretic, push-forward and motivic) are all different. Then we show connections between the torus equivariant motivic Chern class of a projective variety and of its affine cone, generalizing results on projective Thom polynomials.
We study a K-theoretic characteristic class of singular varieties, namely the equivariant motivic Chern class. We prove that the motivic Chern class is characterized by an axiom system inspired by that of "K-theoretic stable envelopes," recently defined by Okounkov and studied in relation with quantum group actions on the K-theory algebra of moduli spaces. We also give explicit formulas for the equivariant motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells and matrix Schubert cells. Lastly, we calculate the equivariant motivic Chern class of the orbits of the A2 quiver representation, which yields formul…
The Milnor class is a generalization of the Milnor number, defined as the difference (up to sign) of Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson's class and Fulton--Johnson's canonical Chern class of a local complete intersection variety in a smooth variety. In this paper we introduce a "motivic" Grothendieck group $K^{\mathcal Prop}_{\ell.c.i}(\mathcal V/X \to S)$ and natural transformations from this Grothendieck group to the homology theory. We capture the Milnor class, more generally Hirzebruch--Milnor class, as a special value of a distinguished element under these natural transformations. We also show a…
We consider a complex smooth projective variety equipped with an action of an algebraic torus with a finite number of fixed points. We compare the motivic Chern classes of Białynicki-Birula cells with the $K$-theoretic stable envelopes of cotangent bundle. We prove that under certain geometric assumptions satisfied e.g. by homogenous spaces these two notions coincide up to normalization.
Using symmetrized Grassmannians we give an algebraic geometric presentation, in the level of classifying spaces, of the Chern character and its relation to Chern classes. This allows one to define, for any projective variety $X$, a Chern character map from the "holomorphic K-theory of X to its morphic cohomology (introduced by Friedlander and Lawson). The holomorphic K-theory of $X$, introduced by Lawson, Lima-Filho and Michelsohn and also by Friedlander and Walker, is defined in terms a group-completion of the space of algebraic morphisms from X into BU. It has been further studied by the aut…
Let K_0(V/X) be the relative Grothendieck group of varieties over X in obj(V), with V the category of (quasi-projective) algebraic (resp. compact complex analytic) varieties over a base field k. Then we constructed the motivic Hirzebruch class transformation in the algebraic context for k of characteristic zero and in the compact complex analytic context. It unifies the well-known three characteristic class transformations of singular varieties: MacPherson's Chern class, Baum-Fulton-MacPherson's Todd class and the L-class of Goresky-MacPherson and Cappell-Shaneson. In this paper we construct a…
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we use the motivic Landweber exact functor theorem to deduce that the Bott inverted infinite projective space is homotopy algebraic $K$-theory. The argument is considerably shorther than any other known proofs and serves well as an illustration of the effectiveness of Landweber exactness. Second, we dispense with the regularity assumption on the base scheme which is often implicitly required in the notion of oriented motivic ring spectra. The latter allows us to verify the motivic Landweber exact functor theorem and the universal property of the alg…
In this paper we study some new theories of characteristic homology classes for singular complex algebraic (or compactifiable analytic) spaces. We introduce a motivic Chern class transformation mC_{*}: K_{0}(var/X)-> G_{0}(X)[y], which generalizes the total λ-class of the cotangent bundle to singular spaces. Here K_{0}(var/X) is the relative Grothendieck group of complex algebraic varieties over X as introduced and studied by Looijenga and Bittner in relation to motivic integration, and G_{0}(X) is the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves of O_{X}-modules. We define a natural transformation …
We present a definition of {\em twisted motivic Chern classes} for singular pairs $(X,Δ)$ consisting of a singular space $X$ and a $\mathbb Q$-Cartier divisor containing the singularities of $X$. The definition is a mixture of the construction of motivic Chern classes previously defined by Brasselet-Sch{ü}rmann-Yokura with the construction of multiplier ideals. The twisted motivic Chern classes are the limits of the elliptic classes defined by Borisov-Libgober. We show that with a suitable choice of the divisor $Δ$ the twisted motivic Chern classes satisfy the axioms of the stable envelopes in…
In this paper we give a proof of the fact, that the motivic Hodge-Chern class transformation MHC_y and Hirzebruch class transformation MHT_y* for mixed Hodge modules and strictly specializable filtered D-modules commute with specialization in the algebraic and in a suitable complex analytic context. Here specialization in the Hodge- and D-module context means the corresponding nearby cycles defined in terms of the $V$-filtration of Malgrange-Kashiwara. This generalizes a corresponding specialization result of Verdier about MacPherson's Chern class transformation c_*.
Motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes are polynomials with K-theory and homology classes as coefficients, which specialize to Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, K-theory classes, and Cappell-Shaneson L-classes. We provide formulas to compute the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes of Grassmannian and vexillary degeneracy loci. We apply our results to obtain the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus of classical and one-pointed Brill-Noether varieties, and therefore their topological Euler characteristic, holomorphic Euler characteristic, and signature.
In this paper we study some new theories of characteristic homology classes for singular complex algebraic varieties. First we introduce a natural transformation T_{y}: K_{0}(var/X) -> H_{*}(X,Q)[y] commuting with proper pushdown, which generalizes the corresponding Hirzebruch characteristic. Here K_{0}(var/X) is the relative Grothendieck group of complex algebraic varieties over X as introduced and studied by Looijenga and Bittner in relation to motivic integration. T_{y} is a homology class version of the motivic measure corresponding to a suitable specialization of the well known Hodge poly…
In this paper, we construct Chern classes from the relative $K$-theory of modulus pairs to the relative motivic cohomology defined by Binda-Saito. An application to relative motivic cohomology of henselian dvr is given.
We prove a `motivic' analogue of the Weyl character formula, computing the Euler characteristic of a line bundle on a generalized flag manifold $G/B$ multiplied either by a motivic Chern class of a Schubert cell, or a Segre analogue of it. The result, given in terms of Demazure-Lusztig (D-L) operators, recovers formulas found by Brubaker, Bump and Licata for the Iwahori-Whittaker functions of the principal series representation of a $p$-adic group. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the classical Casselman-Shalika formula for the spherical Whittaker function. The proofs are based on local…
This paper sets out basic properties of motivic twisted K-theory with respect to degree three motivic cohomology classes of weight one. Motivic twisted K-theory is defined in terms of such motivic cohomology classes by taking pullbacks along the universal principal BG_m-bundle for the classifying space of the multiplicative group scheme. We show a Kuenneth isomorphism for homological motivic twisted K-groups computing the latter as a tensor product of K-groups over the K-theory of BG_m. The proof employs an Adams Hopf algebroid and a tri-graded Tor-spectral sequence for motivic twisted K-theor…
Let $\mathcal{M}(d,χ)$ be the moduli stack of stable sheaves of rank 0, Euler characteristic $χ$ and first Chern class $dH~(d>0)$, with $H$ the hyperplane class in $\mathbb{P}^2$. We compute the $A$-valued motivic measure $μ_A(\mathcal{M}(d,χ))$ of $\mathcal{M}(d,χ)$ and get explicit formula in codimension $D:=ρ_d-1$, where $ρ_d$ is $d-1$ for $d=p$ or $2p$ with $p$ prime, and $7$ otherwise. As a corollary, we get the last $2(D+1)$ Betti numbers of the moduli scheme $M(d,χ)$ when $d$ is coprime to $χ$.
The relative Grothendieck group $K_0(\m V/X)$ is the free abelian group generated by the isomorphism classes of complex algebraic varieties over $X$ modulo the "scissor relation". The motivic Hirzebruch class ${T_y}_*: K_0(\m V /X) \to H_*^{BM}(X) \otimes \bQ[y]$ is a unique natural transformation satisfying that for a nonsingular variety $X$ the value ${T_y}_*([X \xrightarrow {\op {id}_X} X])$ of the isomorphism class of the identity $X \xrightarrow {id_X} X$ is the Poincaré dual of the Hirzebruch cohomology class of the tangent bundle $TX$. It "unifies" the well-known three characteristic cl…
In this paper we compute the motivic Chern classes and homology Hirzebruch characteristic classes of (possibly singular) toric varieties, which in the complete case fit nicely with a generalized Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem. As special cases, we obtain new (or recover well-known) formulae for the Baum-Fulton-MacPherson Todd (or MacPherson-Chern) classes of toric varieties, as well as for the Thom-Milnor L-classes of simplicial projective toric varieties. We present two different perspectives for the computation of these characteristic classes of toric varieties. First, we take advantage of …
Consider a complex algebraic group $G$ acting on a smooth variety $M$ with finitely many orbits, and let $Ω$ be an orbit. The following three invariants of $Ω\subset M$ can be characterized axiomatically: (1) the equivariant fundamental class $[\overlineΩ, M]\in H^*_G(M)$, (2) the equivariant Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class $c(Ω, M)\in H^*_G(M)$, and (3) the equivariant motivic Chern class $mC(Ω, M) \in K_G(M)[y]$. The axioms for Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson and motivic Chern classes are motivated by the axioms for cohomological and K-theoretic stable envelopes of Okounkov and his coauthors. For …
The equivariant Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) class and the equivariant Motivic Chern (MC) class are important characteristic classes of singular varieties in cohomology and K theory---and their theory overlaps with the theory of Okounkov's stable envelopes. We study CSM and MC classes for the orbits of Dynkin quiver representations. We show that the problem of computing the CSM and MC classes of all these orbits can be reduced to some basic classes $c^o_β$, $C^o_β$ parameterized by positive roots $β$. We prove an identity in a deformed version of Kontsevich-Soibelman's Cohomological (and K-…
We introduce a formal integral on the system of varieties mapping properly and birationally to a given one, with value in an associated Chow group. Applications include comparisons of Chern numbers of birational varieties, new birational invariants, `stringy' Chern classes, and a `celestial' zeta function specializing to the topological zeta function. In its simplest manifestation, the integral gives a new expression for Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of possibly singular varieties, placing them into a context in which a `change of variable' formula holds. The formalism has points of contac…
Due to the work of many authors in the last decades, given an algebraic orbifold (smooth proper Deligne-Mumford stack with trivial generic stabilizer), one can construct its orbifold Chow ring and orbifold Grothendieck ring, and relate them by the orbifold Chern character map, generalizing the fundamental work of Chen-Ruan on orbifold cohomology. In this paper, we extend this theory naturally to higher Chow groups and higher algebraic K-theory, mainly following the work of Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura and Edidin-Jarvis-Kimura.
In this paper we give an introduction to our recent work on characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces based on some talks given at conferences in Strasbourg, Oberwolfach and Kagoshima. We explain the relation between nearby cycles for constructible functions or sheaves as well as for (relative) Grothendieck groups of algebraic varieties and mixed Hodge modules, and the specialization of characteristic classes of singular spaces like the Chern-, Todd-, Hirzebruch- and motivic Chern-classes. As an application we get a description of the differences between the corresponding virtual and fun…
Motivic integration and MacPherson's transformation are combined in this paper to construct a theory of "stringy" Chern classes for singular varieties. These classes enjoy strong birational invariance properties, and their definition encodes data coming from resolution of singularities. The singularities allowed in the theory are those typical of the minimal model program; examples are given by quotients of manifolds by finite groups. For the latter an explicit formula is proven, assuming that the canonical line bundle of the manifold descends to the quotient. This gives an expression of the s…
In this paper, we give a construction of the global Chern-Simons functions for toric Calabi-Yau stacks of dimension three using strong exceptional collections. The moduli spaces of sheaves on such stacks can be identified with critical loci of these functions. We give two applications of these functions. First, we prove Joyce's integrality conjecture of generalized DT invariants on local surfaces. Second, we prove a dimension reduction formula for virtual motives, which leads to two recursion formulas for motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants.
We show that classical Chern classes from higher ($p$-adic) $K$-theory to syntomic cohomology extend to logarithmic syntomic cohomology. These Chern classes are compatible -- in a suitable sense -- with addition, products, and $λ$-operations. They are also compatible with the canonical Gysin sequences and, via period maps, with logarithmic étale Chern classes. Moreover, they induce logarithmic crystalline Chern classes. This uses as a critical new ingredient the recent comparison of syntomic cohomology with $p$-adic nearby cycles and $p$-adic motivic cohomology.
In this survey paper we review recent advances in the calculus of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson, motivic Chern, and elliptic classes of classical Schubert varieties. These three theories are one-parameter ($\hbar$) deformations of the notion of fundamental class in their respective extraordinary cohomology theories. Examining these three classes in conjunction is justified by their relation to Okounkov's stable envelope notion. We review formulas for the $\hbar$-deformed classes originating from Tarasov-Varchenko weight functions, as well as their orthogonality relations. As a consequence, explici…
The Milnor-Hirzebruch class of a locally complete intersection X in an algebraic manifold M measures the difference between the (Poincare dual of the) Hirzebruch class of the virtual tangent bundle of X and, respectively, the Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura (homology) Hirzebruch class of X. In this note, we calculate the Milnor-Hirzebruch class of a globally defined algebraic hypersurface X in terms of the corresponding Hirzebruch invariants of singular strata in a Whitney stratification of X. Our approach is based on Schuermann's specialization property for the motivic Hirzebruch class transforma…
The Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) and motivic Chern (mC) classes of Schubert cells in a Grassmannian are one parameter deformations of the fundamental classes of the Schubert varieties in cohomology and K-theory respectively. Like the fundamental classes, the deformed classes form a basis for the cohomology and K-theory ring of the Grassmannian. The purpose of this paper is to initiate the study of the structure constants associated to the basis CSM and mC classes in terms of the combinatorics of polynomials. First, we prove formulas for the structure constants of projective spaces that invo…
We prove generating series formulae for suitable twisted characteristic classes of symmetric products of a singular complex quasi-projective variety. More concretely, we study homology Hirzebruch classes for motivic coefficients, as well as for complexes of mixed Hodge modules. As a special case, we obtain a generating series formula for the (intersection) homology Hirzebruch classes of symmetric products. In some cases, the latter yields a similar formula for twisted homology L-classes generalizing results of Hirzebruch-Zagier and Moonen. Our methods also apply to the study of Todd classes of…
