We give explicit MacPherson cycles for the Chern-MacPherson class of a closed affine algebraic variety $X$ and for any constructible function $α$ with respect to a complex algebraic Whitney stratification of $X$.
We define generalized degrees of the global polar varieties and of the MacPherson cycles and we prove a global index formula for the Euler characteristic of $α$.
Whenever $α$ is the Euler obstruction of $X$, this index formula specializes to the Seade-Tibar-Verjovsky global counterpart of the Le-Teissier formula for the local Euler obstruction.
We use the fixed point arrangement technique developed by Goresky-MacPherson to calculate the part of the equivariant cohomology of the affine flag varieties generated by degree 2. This turns out to be a quadric cone. We also describe the spectrum of the full equivariant cohomology ring as an explicit geometric object. We use our results to show that the vertices of the moment map images of the affine flag varieties lie on a paraboloid.
Topological invariants such as characteristic classes are an important tool to aid in understanding and categorizing the structure and properties of algebraic varieties. In this note we consider the problem of computing a particular characteristic class, the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class, of a complete simplicial toric variety X defined by a fan from the combinatorial data contained in the fan. Specifically, we give an effective combinatorial algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of X, in the Chow ring (or rational Chow ring) of X. This method is formulated by combining, a…
Consider the natural torus action on a partial flag manifold $Fl$. Let $Ω_I\subset Fl$ be an open Schubert variety, and let $c^{sm}(Ω_I)\in H_T^*(Fl)$ be its torus equivariant Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class. We show a set of interpolation properties that uniquely determine $c^{sm}(Ω_I)$, as well as a formula, of `localization type', for $c^{sm}(Ω_I)$. In fact, we proved similar results for a class $κ_I\in H_T^*(Fl)$ --- in the context of quantum group actions on the equivariant cohomology groups of partial flag varieties. In this note we show that $c^{SM}(Ω_I)=κ_I$.
Let $V$ be a possibly singular scheme-theoretic complete intersection subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Using a recent result of Fullwood ("On Milnor classes via invariants of singular subschemes", Journal of Singularities) we develop an algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class and Euler characteristic of $V$. This algorithm complements existing algorithms by providing performance improvements in the computation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class and Euler characteristic for certain types of complete intersection subschem…
We introduce a formal integral on the system of varieties mapping properly and birationally to a given one, with value in an associated Chow group. Applications include comparisons of Chern numbers of birational varieties, new birational invariants, `stringy' Chern classes, and a `celestial' zeta function specializing to the topological zeta function. In its simplest manifestation, the integral gives a new expression for Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of possibly singular varieties, placing them into a context in which a `change of variable' formula holds. The formalism has points of contac…
We define an `enriched' notion of Chow groups for algebraic varieties, agreeing with the conventional notion for complete varieties, but enjoying a functorial push-forward for arbitrary maps. This tool allows us to glue intersection-theoretic information across elements of a stratification of a variety; we illustrate this operation by giving a direct construction of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of singular varieties, providing a new proof of an old (and long since settled) conjecture of Deligne and Grothendieck.
Let $V$ be a closed subscheme of a projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$. We give an algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class, Euler characteristic and Segre class of $ V$. The algorithm can be implemented using either symbolic or numerical methods. The algorithm is based on a new method for calculating the projective degrees of a rational map defined by a homogeneous ideal. Using this result and known formulas for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a projective hypersurface and the Segre class of a projective variety in terms of the projective degrees of certain rational maps we…
We present an algorithm for the symbolic and numerical computation of the degrees of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of a closed subvariety of projective space P^n. As the degree of the top Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class is the topological Euler characteristic, this also yields a method to compute the topological Euler characteristic of projective varieties. The method is based on Aluffi's symbolic algorithm to compute degrees of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, a symbolic method to compute degrees of Segre classes, and the regenerative cascade by Hauenstein, Sommese and Wampler. The …
We introduce a notion of `proChow group' of varieties, agreeing with the notion of Chow group for complete varieties and covariantly functorial with respect to arbitrary morphisms. We construct a natural transformation from the functor of constructible functions to the proChow functor, extending MacPherson's natural transformation. We illustrate the result by providing very short proofs of (a generalization of) two well-known facts on Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes: Kwiecinski's product formula, and the Ehlers-Barthel-Brasselet-Fieseler computation of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of to…
Homology Hirzebruch characteristic classes for singular varieties have been recently defined by Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura as an attempt to unify previously known characteristic class theories for singular spaces (e.g., MacPherson-Chern classes, Baum-Fulton-MacPherson Todd classes, and Goresky-MacPherson L-classes, respectively). In this note we define equivariant analogues of these classes for singular quasi-projective varieties acted upon by a finite group of algebraic automorphisms, and show how these can be used to calculate the homology Hirzebruch classes of global quotient varieties. We…
Michael Gromov has recently initiated what he calls ``symbolic algebraic geometry", in which objects are proalgebraic varieties: a proalgebraic variety is by definition the projective limit of a projective system of algebraic varieties. In this paper we introduce characteristic classes of proalgebraic varieties, using Grothendieck transformations of Fulton--MacPherson's Bivariant Theory, modeled on the construction of MacPherson's Chern class transformation of proalgebraic varieties. We show that a proalgebraic version of the Euler--Poincaré characteristic with values in the Grothendieck ring …
We show that, with coefficients in a field or a complete local ring k, the Braden-MacPherson algorithm computes the stalks of parity sheaves with coefficients in k. As a consequence we deduce that the Braden-MacPherson algorithm may be used to calculate the characters of tilting modules for algebraic groups and show that the p-smooth locus of (Kac-Moody) Schubert varieties agrees with the rationally smooth locus, if the underlying Bruhat graph satisfies a GKM-condition.
We study the Fulton-Macpherson Chow cohomology of affine toric varieties. In particular, we prove that the Chow cohomology vanishes in positive degree. We prove an analogous result for the operational $K$-theory defined by Anderson and Payne.
Michael Gromov has recently initiated what he calls ``symbolic algebraic geometry", in which objects are proalgebraic varieties: a proalgebraic variety is by definition the projective limit of a projective system of algebraic varieties. In this paper we construct Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes of proalgebraic varieties, by introducing the notion of ``proconstructible functions " and "$χ$-stable proconstructible functions" and using the Fulton-MacPherson's Bivariant Theory. As a "motivic" version of a $χ$-stable proconstructible function, $\Ga$-stable constructible functions are introduced…
For a large class of possibly singular complete intersections we prove a formula for their Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes in terms of a single blowup along a scheme supported on the singular loci of such varieties. In the hypersurface case our formula recovers a formula of Aluffi proven in 1996. As our formula is in no way tailored to the complete intersection hypothesis, we conjecture that it holds for all closed subschemes of a smooth variety. If in fact true, such a formula would provide a simple characterization of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class which does not depend on a resolutio…
We prove a simple formula for MacPherson's Chern class of hypersurfaces in nonsingular varieties. The result highlights the relation between MacPherson's class and other definitions of homology Chern classes of singular varieties, such as Mather's Chern class and a class introduced by W. Fulton.
Motivic integration and MacPherson's transformation are combined in this paper to construct a theory of "stringy" Chern classes for singular varieties. These classes enjoy strong birational invariance properties, and their definition encodes data coming from resolution of singularities. The singularities allowed in the theory are those typical of the minimal model program; examples are given by quotients of manifolds by finite groups. For the latter an explicit formula is proven, assuming that the canonical line bundle of the manifold descends to the quotient. This gives an expression of the s…
Nakada's colored hook formula is a vast generalization of many important formulae in combinatorics, such as the classical hook length formula and the Peterson's formula for the number of reduced expressions of minuscule Weyl group elements. In this paper, we utilize cohomological properties of Segre-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells and varieties to prove a generalization of a cohomological version of Nakada's formula, in terms of smoothness properties of Schubert varieties. A key ingredient in the proof is the study of a decorated version of the Bruhat graph. Summing over weighted paths of…
We define the equivariant Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a possibly singular algebraic variety with a group action over the complex number field (or a field of characteristic 0). In fact, we construct a natural transformation from the equivariant constructible function functor to the equivariant homology functor (in the sense of Totaro-Edidin-Graham), which may be regarded as MacPherson's transformation for (certain) quotient stacks. We discuss on other type Chern/Segre classes and give some applications generalizing orbifold Euler characteristics and Thom polynomials of singularities. The…
Assuming the purity conjecture for the affine Springer fibers which has been formulated by Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson, we prove a geometric analog of the fundamental lemma for unitary groups. Our approach is similar to the one of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson. Our main new ingredient is the link between affine Springer fibers and compactified Jacobians which is described in math.AG/0204109.
We show that the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a Schubert cell in a Grassmannian is represented by a reduced and irreducible subvariety in each degree. This gives an affirmative answer to a positivity conjecture of Aluffi and Mihalcea.
The existence of bivariant Chern classes was conjectured by W.Fulton and R.MacPherson and proved by J.P.Brasselet for cellular morphisms of analytic varieties. In this paper we show that restricted to morphisms whose target varieties are possible singular but (rational) homology manifolds, the bivariant Chern classes (with rational coefficients) are uniquely determined. In the final sections we construct a unique bivariant Chern class satisfying a suitable normalization condition. In fact, it will be a special case of a general construction of unique Grothendieck transformations, which in a se…
We obtain several formulas for the Euclidean distance degree (ED degree) of an arbitrary nonsingular variety in projective space: in terms of Chern and Segre classes, Milnor classes, Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, and an extremely simple formula equating the Euclidean distance degree of X with the Euler characteristic of an open subset of X.
We give explicit formulas for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of all Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian of $d$-planes in a vector space, and conjecture that these classes are effective. We prove this is the case for (very) small values of $d$.
This work has two complementary parts, in the first part we compute the local Euler obstruction of generic determinantal varieties and apply this result to compute the Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson class of such varieties. In the second part we compute the Euler characteristic of the stabilization of an essentially isolated determinantal singularity (EIDS). The formula is given in terms of the local Euler obstruction and Gaffney's $m_{d}$ multiplicity.
In this note we introduce the concept of reflective projective varieties. These are stratified projective varieties with certain dimension constraints on their dual varieties. We prove that for such varieties, the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of the strata completely determine the local Euler obstructions and the polar degrees. We also propose an algorithm to compute the local Euler obstructions when such varieties are formed by group orbits. As examples we compute the local Euler obstructions of quadratic hypersurfaces and ordinary determinantal varieties to illustrate our method.
Let K_0(V/X) be the relative Grothendieck group of varieties over X in obj(V), with V the category of (quasi-projective) algebraic (resp. compact complex analytic) varieties over a base field k. Then we constructed the motivic Hirzebruch class transformation in the algebraic context for k of characteristic zero and in the compact complex analytic context. It unifies the well-known three characteristic class transformations of singular varieties: MacPherson's Chern class, Baum-Fulton-MacPherson's Todd class and the L-class of Goresky-MacPherson and Cappell-Shaneson. In this paper we construct a…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. For $m\geq n$, we define $τ_{m,n,k}$ to be the set of $m\times n$ matrices over $K$ with kernel dimension $\geq k$. This is a projective subvariety of $\bbP^{mn-1}$, and is called the (generic) determinantal variety. In most cases $τ_{m,n,k}$ is singular with singular locus $τ_{m,n,k+1}$. In this paper we give explicit formulas computing the Chern-Mather class ($c_M$) and the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class ($c_{SM}$) of $τ_{m,n,k}$, as classes in the projective space. We also obtain formulas for the conormal cycles and the charac…
The (homogeneous) Essentially Isolated Determinantal Variety is the natural generalization of generic determinantal variety, and is fundamental example to study non-isolated singularities. In this paper we study the characteristic classes on these varieties. We give explicit formulas of their Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes and Chern-Mather classes via standard Schubert calculus. As corollaries we obtain formulas for their (generic) sectional Euler characteristics, characteristic cycles and polar classes.
We present a definition of intersection homology for real algebraic varieties that is analogous to Goresky and MacPherson's original definition of intersection homology for complex varieties.
We study a wide class of affine varieties, which we call affine Fano varieties. By analogy with birationally super-rigid Fano varieties, we define super-rigidity for affine Fano varieties, and provide many examples and non-examples of super-rigid affine Fano varieties.
Our concern in this paper is the dimension and inclusion relations of Schubert varieties in twisted partial affine flag varieties. In the end we apply our results to some local models of certain Schubert varieties.
We determine the set of connected components of closed affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for hyperspecial maximal parahoric subgroups of unramified connected reductive groups. This extends the work by Viehmann for split reductive groups, and the work by Chen-Kisin-Viehmann on minuscule affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties.
In this paper we study certain homogeneous spaces, which we call generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties. The main aim is to characterise the canonical divisor of generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties in terms of group representations. Affine Stiefel algebraic varieties and in particular $S^{n}$ are two special cases of the generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties.
The purpose of this short note is to prove a formula for the Chern-Mather classes of a toric variety in terms of its orbits and the local Euler obstructions at general points of each orbit (Theorem 2). We use the general definition of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes (see [7]) and their special expression in case of a toric variety (see [2]). As a corollary, we obtain a formula by Matsui-Takeuchi [8, Corollary 1.6]. Alternatively, one could deduce the formula of Theorem 2 from the Matsui-Takeuchi formula, by using our general result [11, Theoreme 3] for the degree of the polar varieties i…
A classical result of Miyanishi-Sugie and Keel-McKernan asserts that for smooth affine surfaces, affine-uniruledness is equivalent to affine-ruledness, both properties being in fact equivalent to the negativity of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension. Here we show in contrast that starting from dimension three, there exists smooth affine varieties which are affine-uniruled but not affine-ruled.
This paper studies the singularities of affine Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannian (of type $\mathrm{A}^{(1)}_\ell$). For two classes of affine Schubert varieties, we determine the singular loci; and for one class, we also determine explicitly the tangent spaces at singular points. For a general affine Schubert variety, we give partial results on the singular locus.
In this paper we calculate the dimension of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine Grassmannian of unramified groups. We also examine the irreducible components of ADLVs in the superbasic case and the $J_b(F)$-action on them.
Motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes are polynomials with K-theory and homology classes as coefficients, which specialize to Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, K-theory classes, and Cappell-Shaneson L-classes. We provide formulas to compute the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes of Grassmannian and vexillary degeneracy loci. We apply our results to obtain the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus of classical and one-pointed Brill-Noether varieties, and therefore their topological Euler characteristic, holomorphic Euler characteristic, and signature.
We investigate flexibility of affine varieties with an action of a linear algebraic group. Flexibility of a smooth affine variety with only constant invertible functions and a locally transitive action of a reductive group is proved. Also we show that a normal affine complexity-zero horospherical variety is flexible.
We determine the set of connected components of closed affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for special maximal compact subgroups of split connected reductive groups. Especially, we show that such an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety has isolated points if and only if its dimension is 0. From the dimension formula for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties we obtain a description of the set of these varieties that are zero-dimensional.
We prove the equality of the Makar-Limanov invariant and the modified Makar-Limanov invariant in the case of not necessary normal affine toric varieties. Also we give a combinatorial description of these invariants.
In this paper we study the geometric structure of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $GL_3$ and $b$ basic. We completely determine the irreducible components of the affine Deligne-Lusztig variety. In particular, we classify the cases where all of the irreducible components are classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties times finite-dimensional affine spaces. If this is the case, then the irreducible components are pairwise disjoint.
Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are closely related to the special fibre of Newton strata in the reduction of Shimura varieties or of moduli spaces of $G$-shtukas. In almost all cases, they are not quasi-compact. In this note we prove basic finiteness properties of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties under minimal assumptions on the associated group. We show that affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are locally of finite type, and prove a global finiteness result related to the natural group action. Similar results have previously been known for special situations.
This paper studies affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine flag manifold of a split group. Among other things, it proves emptiness for certain of these varieties, relates some of them to those for Levi subgroups, extends previous conjectures concerning their dimensions, and generalizes the superset method.
We prove Rapoport's dimension conjecture for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for GL_h and superbasic b. From this case the general dimension formula for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for special maximal compact subgroups of split groups follows, as was shown in a recent paper by Goertz, Haines, Kottwitz, and Reuman.
Let X be an irreducible affine T-variety. We consider families of affine stable toric T-varieties over X and give a description of the corresponding moduli space as the quotient stack of an open subscheme in a certain toric Hilbert scheme under the action of a torus.
We provide a complete description of normal affine algebraic varieties over the real numbers endowed with an effective action of the real circle, that is, the real form of the complex multiplicative group whose real locus consists of the unitary circle in the real plane. Our approach builds on the geometrico-combinatorial description of normal affine varieties with effective actions of split tori in terms of proper polyhedral divisors on semiprojective varieties due to Altmann and Hausen
In this paper we discuss the geometry of affine Deligne Lusztig varieties with very special level structure, determining their dimension and connected and irreducible components. As application, we prove the Grothendieck conjecture for Shimura varieties with very special level at $p$ and a function field analogue.
