We make a systematic study of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for different notions of stability for polarised algebraic varieties $(X,L)$; in particular for K- and Chow stability. For each type of stability this leads to a concept of slope $μ$ for varieties and their subschemes; if $(X,L)$ is semistable then $μ(Z)\leμ(X)$ for all $Z\subset X$. We give examples such as curves, canonical models and Calabi-Yaus. We prove various foundational technical results towards understanding the converse, leading to partial results; in particular this gives a geometric (rather than combinatorial) proof of the stability of smooth curves.
We give a short appreciation of Mumford's work on the moduli of varieties by putting it into historical context. By reviewing earlier works we highlight the innovations introduced by Mumford. Then we discuss recent developments whose origins can be traced back to Mumford's ideas.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety of Mumford's type. This paper determines all possible Newton polygons of $A$ in char $p$. This work generalizes a result of R. Noot.
We study the Mumford--Tate conjecture for hyperkähler varieties. We show that the full conjecture holds for all varieties deformation equivalent to either an Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface or to O'Grady's ten dimensional example, and all of their self-products. For an arbitrary hyperkähler variety whose second Betti number is not 3, we prove the Mumford--Tate conjecture in every codimension under the assumption that the Künneth components in even degree of its André motive are abelian. Our results extend a theorem of André.
In this paper, we define $Λ$-quot-functors on Deligne-Mumford stacks. We prove that the $Λ$-quot-functor is representable by an algebraic space. Then, we construct the moduli space of $Λ$-modules on a projective Deligne-Mumford stack. We prove that this moduli space is a quasi-projective scheme.
We prove the Mumford-Tate conjecture for those abelian varieties over number fields, whose simple factors of their adjoint Mumford-Tate groups have over $\dbR$ certain (products of) non-compact factors. In particular, we prove this conjecture for the orthogonal case ($B_n$ and $D_n^{\dbR}$ Shimura types). We construct embeddings of Shimura varieties of (whose adjoints are of prescribed abelian type) into unitary Shimura varieties. We also prove two general theorems involving Frobenius tori of abelian varieties over number fields.
We prove the Tate conjecture for divisor classes and the Mumford-Tate conjecture for the cohomology in degree 2 for varieties with $h^{2,0}=1$ over a finitely generated field of characteristic 0, under a mild assumption on their moduli. As an application of this general result, we prove the Tate and Mumford-Tate conjectures for some classes of algebraic surfaces with $p_g=1$.
Let X be a Mumford-Tate variety, i.e., a quotient of a Mumford-Tate domain D by a discrete subgroup. Mumford-Tate varieties are generalizations of Shimura varieties. We define the notion of a special subvariety Y in X (of Shimura type), and formulate necessary criteria for Y to be special. Our method consists in looking at finitely many compactified special curves C_i in Y, and testing whether the inclusion of the union of all C_i in Y satisfies certain properties. One of them is the so-called relative proportionality condition. In this paper, we give a new formulation of this numerical criter…
In this paper, we study the geometric invariant theory on algebraic spaces, and construct te moduli spaces of $\mathcal{H}$-semistable sheaves on projective Deligne-Mumford stacks over algebraic spaces $S$. We prove that this moduli space is projective over $S$ as an algebraic space.
In this paper, we firstly point out, by a counter example, that Proposition 6.4 of Section 6 in Bump's book (Algebraic Geometry) is error, and then give a correct statement with proof. We finally point out a gap in the proof of Theorem 3, in Chapter I Section 8, of Mumford's red book, and indicate a way to complete it.
Exact bounds for the positions of the branch points for cyclic coverings of the $p$-adic projective line by Mumford curves are calculated in two ways. Firstly, by using Fumiharu Kato's *-trees, and secondly by giving explicit matrix representations of the Schottky groups corresponding to the Mumford curves above the projective line through combinatorial group theory.
In this note, we give a bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a homogeneous ideal $I$ in terms of the degrees of its generators. We assume that $I$ defines a local complete intersection with log canonical singularities.
In this article we study the (cohomological) Hodge conjecture for singular varieties. We prove the conjecture for simple normal crossing varieties that can be embedded in a family where the Mumford-Tate group remains constant. We show how to produce such families. Furthermore, we show for varieties with worse singularities the conjecture can be expressed solely in terms of the algebraic classes.
We study the rigid analytic geometry of cyclic coverings of the projective line. We determine the defining equation of a cyclic covering of degree $p$ of the projective line by a Mumford curve over a complete discrete valuation field of positive characteristic $p$. Previously, Bradley studied that of any degree over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero.
Let K be a number field and A an abelian variety over K. We are interested in the following conjecture of Morita: if the Mumford-Tate group of A does not contain unipotent Q-rational points then A has potentially good reduction at any discrete place of K. The Mumford-Tate group is an object of analytical nature whereas having good reduction is an arithmetical notion, linked to the ramification of Galois representations. This conjecture has been proved by Morita for particular abelian varieties with many endomorphisms (called of PEL type). Noot obtained results for abelian varieties without non…
We prove the Mumford--Tate conjecture for those abelian varieties over number fields whose extensions to C have attached adjoint Shimura varieties that are products of simple, adjoint Shimura varieties of certain Shimura types. In particular, we prove the conjecture for the orthogonal case (i.e., for the $B_n$ and $D_n^R$ Shimura types). As a main tool, we construct embeddings of Shimura varieties (whose adjoints are) of prescribed abelian type into unitary Shimura varieties of PEL type. These constructions implicitly classify the adjoints of Shimura varieties of PEL type.
Inspired by Beauville's recent construction of Ulrich sheaves on abelian surfaces, we pose the question of whether a torsion-free sheaf on a polarized smooth projective variety with Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity 1 is a GV (generic vanishing) sheaf, and present evidence that this question is governed by the positivity of cycles on generalized Brill-Noether loci. We prove that it has an affirmative answer for natural polarizations on many well-known irregular surfaces, as well as some polarizations on ruled threefolds over a curve.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finitely generated field $K$ of characteristic~$0$ and fix an embedding $K \subset \mathbb{C}$. The Mumford--Tate conjecture is a precise way of saying that certain extra structure on the $\ell$-adic étale cohomology groups of~$X$ (namely, a Galois representation) and certain extra structure on the singular cohomology groups of~$X$ (namely, a Hodge structure) convey the same information. The main result of this paper says that if $A_1$ and~$A_2$ are abelian varieties (or abelian motives) over~$K$, and the Mumford--Tate conjecture holds for both~$A_…
Matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties arising in the Schubert calculus of the complete flag variety. We give a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties, answering a question of Jenna Rajchgot. We follow her proposed strategy of studying the highest-degree homogeneous parts of Grothendieck polynomials, which we call Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. In addition to the regularity formula, we obtain formulas for the degrees of all Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials and for their leading terms, as well as a complete description of when two Castelnuovo-Mumfor…
For many classical moduli spaces of orthogonal type there are results about the Kodaira dimension. But nothing is known in the case of dimension greater than 19. In this paper we obtain the first results in this direction. In particular the modular variety defined by the orthogonal group of the even unimodular lattice of signature (2, 8m+2) is of general type if m is at least 5.
We study the image of $\ell$-adic representations attached to subvarieties of Shimura varieties $Sh_K(G,X)$ that are not contained in a smaller Shimura subvariety and have no isotrivial components. We show that, for $\ell$ large enough (depending on the Shimura datum $(G,X)$ and the subvariety), such image contains the $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points coming from the simply connected cover of the derived subgroup of $G$. This can be regarded as a geometric version of the integral $\ell$-adic Mumford-Tate conjecture.
We will give an upper bound for the $k$-normality of very ample lattice simplices, and then give an Eisenbud-Goto-type bound for some special classes of projective toric varieties.
We investigate to what extent an abelian variety over a finite field can be lifted to one in characteristic zero with small Mumford-Tate group. We prove that supersingular abelian surfaces, respectively threefolds, can be lifted to ones isogenous to a square, respectively product, of elliptic curves. On the other hand, we show that supersingular abelian threefolds cannot be lifted to one isogenous to the cube of an elliptic curve over the Witt vectors.
The stable reduction theorem of Deligne and Mumford --- The moduli space of smooth projective curves of genus $g$ is a quasi-projective algebraic variety, but is not projective. To understand its geometry, it may be crucial to consider compactifications of this space. By allowing to parameterize as well curves with controlled singularities (the so called stable curves), Deligne and Mumford constructed a projective compactification. The properness of this compactification translates into the stable reduction theorem that they prove, its projectivity is a later theorem of Knudsen and Mumford. Th…
We prove that a 1-dimnl family of abelian varieties with an ample sheaf defining principal polarization can be canonically compactified (after a finite base change) to a projective family with an ample sheaf. We show that the central fiber (P,L), which we call an SQAV, has a canonical Cartier theta divisor. We give a combinatorial definition for SQAVs and describe their geometrical properties, in particular compute cohomologies of L^n, n\ge0.
This is a revised version of a part of the author's preprint "On p-adic uniformization of fake projective planes" (preprint, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Mathematik, 1998 (121)). In this paper we construct explicitly a Shimura surface of PEL-type, associated to a certain unitary group, whose connected components are isomorphic to Mumford's fake projective plane. We also give the canonical model, Shimura field and number of connected components of this Shimura surface. As a consequence of the construction we prove that the Mumford's fake projective plane is an arithmetic complex unit-ball quotient,…
We prove a formula for the orbifold Chow ring of semi-projective toric DM stacks, generalizing the orbifold Chow ring formula of projective toric DM stacks by Borisov-Chen-Smith. We also consider a special kind of semi-projective toric DM stacks, the Lawrence toric DM stacks. We prove that the orbifold Chow ring of a Lawrence toric DM stack is isomorphic to the orbifold Chow ring of its associated hypertoric DM stack studied in \cite{JT}.
We give a short proof of the "prime-to-$p$ version" of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for an abelian variety over a number field, when it has supersingular reduction at a prime dividing $p$, by combining the methods of Bogomolov, Hrushovski, and Pink-Roessler. Our proof here is quite simple and short, and neither $p$-adic Hodge theory nor model theory is used. The observation is that a power of a lift of the Frobenius element at a supersingular prime acts on the prime-to-$p$ torsion points via nontrivial homothety.
We study geometric and algebraic geometric properties of the continuous and discrete Neumann systems on cotangent bundles of Stiefel varieties $V_{n,r}$. The systems are integrable in the non-commutative sense, and by applying a $2r\times 2r$--Lax representation, we show that generic complex invariant manifolds are open subsets of affine (non-compact) Prym varieties on which the complex flow is linear. The characteristics of the varieties and the direction of the flow are calculated explicitly. Next, we construct a family of (multi-valued) integrable discretizations of the Neumann systems and …
We give a complete proof for the implication from the Manin-Mumford conjecture to the Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic, using integral models of semi-abelian varieties over a ring of formal power series, and the machinery of jet schemes.
We describe a parallel polynomial time algorithm for computing the topological Betti numbers of a smooth complex projective variety $X$. It is the first single exponential time algorithm for computing the Betti numbers of a significant class of complex varieties of arbitrary dimension. Our main theoretical result is that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the sheaf of differential $p$-forms on $X$ is bounded by $p(em+1)D$, where $e$, $m$, and $D$ are the maximal codimension, dimension, and degree, respectively, of all irreducible components of $X$. It follows that, for a union $V$ of generi…
This paper is an attempt to give some general results on the tempered fundamental group of a $p$-adic smooth algebraic varieties (which is a sort of analog of the topologic fundamental group of complex algebraic varieties in the p-adic world). The main result asserts that one can recover the metric structure of the graph of the stable model of a Mumford curve from the tempered fundamental group of this Mumford curve. We will also prove birational invariance, invariance by algebraically closed extensions and a Kuenneth formula for the tempered fundamental group. We will describe the tempered fu…
We study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of tangent cones of Schubert varieties. Conjectures about this statistic are presented; these are proved for the covexillary case. This builds on work of L. Li and the author on these tangent cones, as well as that of J. Rajchgot-Y. Ren-C. Robichaux-A. St. Dizier-A. Weigandt and J. Rajchgot-C. Robichaux-A. Weigandt on tableau rules for computing regularity of some matrix Schubert varieties.
The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity r of a complex, projective variety V is an upper bound for the degrees of the hypersurfaces necessary to cut out V. In this note we give a bound for r when V is left invariant by a vector field on the ambient projective space. More precisely, assume V is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, for instance, a complete intersection. Assume as well that V projects to a normal-crossings hypersurface, which is the case when V is a curve with at most ordinary nodes. Then we show that r<m+s+2, where s is the dimension of V and m is the degree of the vector field. Our method…
Motivated by the S-duality conjecture of Vafa-Witten, Tanaka-Thomas have developed a theory of Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces using the moduli space of Higgs sheaves. Their definition and calculation prove the S-duality prediction of Vafa-Witten in many cases in the side of gauge group $SU(r)$. In this survey paper for ICCM-2019 we review the S-duality conjecture in physics by Vafa-Witten and the definition of Vafa-Witten invariants for smooth projective surfaces and surface Deligne-Mumford stacks. We make a prediction that the Vafa-Witten invariants for Deligne-Mumford surface…
We generalize the classical Hilbert-Mumford criteria for GIT (semi-)stability in terms of one parameter subgroups of a linearly reductive group G over a field k, to the relative situation of an equivariant, projective morphism X -> Spec A to a noetherian k-algebra A. We also extend the classical projectivity result for GIT quotients: the induced morphism X^ss/G -> Spec A^G is projective. As an example of applications to moduli problems, we consider degenerations of Hilbert schemes of points.
The paper begins by overviewing the basic facts on geometric exceptional collections. Then, we derive, for any coherent sheaf $\cF$ on a smooth projective variety with a geometric collection, two spectral sequences: the first one abuts to $\cF$ and the second one to its cohomology. The main goal of the paper is to generalize Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for coherent sheaves on projective spaces to coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties $X$ with a geometric collection $σ$. We define the notion of regularity of a coherent sheaf $\cF$ on $X$ with respect to $σ$. We show that the basic …
We introduce a notion of Gieseker stability for coherent sheaves on tame Deligne-Mumford stacks with projective moduli scheme and some chosen generating sheaf on the stack in the sense of Olsson and Starr \cite{MR2007396}. We prove that this stability condition is open, and pure dimensional semistable sheaves form a bounded family. We explicitly construct the moduli stack of semistable sheaves as a finite type global quotient, and study the moduli scheme of stable sheaves and its natural compactification in the same spirit as the seminal paper of Simpson \cite{MR1307297}. With this general mac…
We prove the cone theorem for varieties with LCIQ singularities using deformation theory of stable maps into Deligne-Mumford stacks. We also obtain a sharper bound on $-(K_X+D)$-degree of $(K_X+D)$-negative extremal rays for projective $\QQ$-factorial log terminal threefold pair $(X,D)$.
In this article we review the question of constructing geometric quotients of actions of linear algebraic groups on irreducible varieties over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero, in the spirit of Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). The article surveys some recent work on geometric invariant theory and quotients of varieties by linear algebraic group actions, as well as background material on linear algebraic groups, Mumford's GIT and some of the challenges that the non-reductive setting presents. The earlier work of two of the authors in the setting of unipotent group a…

Suppose $F\colon \mathcal{D}(X)\to \mathcal{T}$ is an exact functor from the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety $X$ to a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$. If $F$ possesses left and right adjoints, then the Bondal-Orlov criterion gives a simple way of determining if $F$ is fully faithful. We prove a natural extension to the case when $X$ is a smooth and proper DM stack with projective coarse moduli space.
The arrangement of all Galois lines for the Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve in the projective 3-space is described. It may be surprising that there exist infinitely many Galois lines intersecting this curve.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree,i.e., Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a given variety $X$ is less than or equal to $deg(X)-codim(X)+1$. This regularity conjecture (including classification of examples on the boundary) was verified for integral curves (Castelnuovo, Gruson, Lazarsfeld and Peskine), and for smooth surfaces (Pinkham, Lazarsfeld). In this paper we prove that $reg(X) \le deg(X)-1$ for smooth threefolds $X$ …
Inspired by a theorem of Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of curves in projective spaces, we bound the Theta-regularity of curves in polarized abelian varieties.
The main goal of the paper is to generalize Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for coherent sheaves on projective spaces to coherent sheaves on $n$-dimensional smooth projective varieties $X$ with an $n$-block collection $\cB $ which generates the bounded derived category $\cD ^b({\cO}_X$-$mod)$. To this end, we use the theory of $n$-blocks and Beilinson type spectral sequence to define the notion of regularity of a coherent sheaf $F$ on $X$ with respect to the $n$-block collection $\cB $. We show that the basic formal properties of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of coherent sheaves over proje…
Hypertoric varieties are determined by hyperplane arrangements. In this paper, we use stacky hyperplane arrangements to define the notion of hypertoric Deligne-Mumford stacks. Their orbifold Chow rings are computed. As an application, some examples related to crepant resolutions are discussed.
We provide a definition of Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surface Deligne-Mumford stacks, generalizing the construction of Tanaka-Thomas on the Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces inspired by the S-duality conjecture. We give calculations for a root stack over a general type quintic surface, and quintic surfaces with ADE singularities. The relationship between the Vafa-Witten invariants of quintic surfaces with ADE singularities and the Vafa-Witten invariants of their crepant resolutions is also discussed.
In this paper we prove the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture for connected curves. We also investigate the structure of connected curves for which this bound is optimal. In particular, we construct connected curves of arbitrarily high degree in projective 4-space having maximal regularity, but no extremal secants. We also show that any connected curve in projective 3-space of degree at least 5 that has no linear components and has maximal regularity has an extremal secant.
The de Rham comparison theorem for varieties, first proved by Faltings, gives the de Rham cohomology of a variety in terms of its p-adic etale cohomology. We extend this theorem to proper, smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks. Two approaches are given, which both in the end reduce the problem to the already known comparison theorem for varieties. The first approach employs the formalism of Weil cohomologies. Unfortunately, this does not result in a complete proof of the comparison theorem, as the author was unable to prove the required compatibility between intersections and cup products. Nevertheles…
