This is a revised version of a part of the author's preprint "On p-adic uniformization of fake projective planes" (preprint, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Mathematik, 1998 (121)).
In this paper we construct explicitly a Shimura surface of PEL-type, associated to a certain unitary group, whose connected components are isomorphic to Mumford's fake projective plane. We also give the canonical model, Shimura field and number of connected components of this Shimura surface. As a consequence of the construction we prove that the Mumford's fake projective plane is an arithmetic complex unit-ball quotient, and has the 7-th cyclotomic field as a field of definition.
In Tohoku Math. J. 50 (1998), 537-555, Masanori Ishida and the author discussed two other possible fake projective planes. The author has also obtained the corresponding results as above for these fake projective planes and has written them in the above preprint, which is available in the web page: http://www.mpim-bonn.mpg.de/html/preprints/preprints.html
We will give an upper bound for the $k$-normality of very ample lattice simplices, and then give an Eisenbud-Goto-type bound for some special classes of projective toric varieties.
The arithmetic Chow groups and their product structure are extended from the category of regular arithmetic varieties to regular Deligne-Mumford stacks over the ring of integers in a number field.
We construct the universal Mumford curve of given genus as a family of Mumford curves over the deformation space of degenerate curves in the category of arithmetic formal geometry. Furthermore, we give explicit formulas of abelian differentials and their periods of the universal Mumford curve.
We prove that the fake projective planes constructed from the diadic discrete group discovered by Cartwright, Mantero, Steger, and Zappa are connected Shimura varieties associated to a certain unitary group. The necessary Shimura data, as well as the unitary group, are explicitly described. We also give a field of definition of these fake projective planes.
We give the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of arrangements of (n-2)-planes in P^n whose incidence graph is a sufficiently large complete bipartite graph, and determine when such arrangements are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay.
The purpose of the present paper is to explain the fake projective plane constructed by J.H. Keum from the point of view of arithmetic ball quotients. Beside the ball quotient associated with the fake projective plane, we also analize two further naturally related ball quotients whose minimal desingularizations lead to two elliptic surfaces, one already considered by J.H. Keum as well as the one constructed by M.N. Ishida in terms of p-adic uniformization.
We show that if n>5, PU(n-1,1) does not contain a cocompact arithmetic subgroup with the same Euler-Poincare characteristic (in the sense of C.T.C. Wall) as the complex projective space of dimension n-1, and show that if n=5, there are at least four such subgroups, which are in fact torsion-free. This, in particular, leads to examples of a fake projective space of dimension 4. Analogous results for arithmetic fake grassmannians Gr(m,n) with n>3 odd are also obtained.
We adapt the theory of non-Archimedean uniformization to construct a smooth surface from a lattice in PGL3(Q2) that has nontrivial torsion. It turns out to be a fake projective plane, commensurable with Mumford's fake plane yet distinct from it and the other fake planes that arise from 2-adic uniformization by torsion-free groups. As part of the proof, and of independent interest, we compute the homotopy type of the Berkovich space of our plane.
A fake projective plane is a compact complex manifold of dimension 2 which has the same Betti numbers as the complex projective plane, but not isomorphic to the complex projective plane. As was shown by D. Mumford, there exists at least one such surface. In this paper we prove the existence of a fake projective plane which is birational to a cyclic cover of degree 7 of a Dolgachev surface.
The aim of this paper is to start a systematic investigation of the arithmetic degree of projective schemes as introduced by D. Bayer and D. Mumford. One main theme concerns itself with the behaviour of this arithmetic degree under hypersurface sections. The notion of arithmetic degree involves the new concept of length-multiplicity of embedded primary ideals. Therefore it is much harder to control the arithmetic degree under a hypersurface section than in the case for the classical degree theory. Nevertheless it has important and interesting applications. We describe such applications to the …
It has long been known that to a complex cubic surface or threefold one can canonically associate a principally polarized abelian variety. We give a construction which works for cubics over an arithmetic base. This answers, away from the prime 2, an old question of Deligne and a recent question of Kudla and Rapoport. We further classify the Mumford-Tate groups of the abelian varieties which arise, and give additional arithmetic applications.
We construct a torsion-free arithmetic lattice in $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!))\times\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!))$ arising from a quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_2(z)$. It is the fundamental group of a square complex with universal covering $T_3\times T_3$, a product of trees with constant valency $3$, which has minimal Euler characteristic. Furthermore, our lattice gives rise to a fake quadric over $\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!)$ by means of non-archimedean uniformization.
Let $X$ be a projective algebraic manifold and let $CH^r(X)$ be the Chow group of algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$, modulo rational equivalence. Working with a candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration $\{F^ν\}_{ν\geq 0}$ on $CH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q}$ due to the second author, we construct a space of arithmetic Hodge theoretic invariants $\nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$ and corresponding map $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν} : Gr_{F}^νCH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q} \to \nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$, and determine conditions on $X$ for which the kernel and image of $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν}$ are ``uncountably large''.
In this paper, we show some applications to algebraic cycles by using higher Abel-Jacobi maps which were defined in [the author: Motives and algebraic de Rham cohomology]. In particular, we prove that the Beilinson conjecture on algebraic cycles over number fields implies the Bloch conjecture on zero-cycles on surfaces. Moreover, we construct a zero-cycle on a product of curves whose Mumford invariant vanishes, but not higher Abel-Jacobi invariant.
We collect evidence in support of a conjecture of Griffiths, Green and Kerr on the arithmetic of extension classes of limiting mixed Hodge structures arising from semistable degenerations over a number field. After briefly summarizing how a result of Iritani implies this conjecture for a collection of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau threefold examples studied by Doran and Morgan, the authors investigate a sequence of (non-hypergeometric) examples in dimensions 1 through 6 arising from Katz's theory of the middle convolution. A crucial role is played by the Mumford-Tate group (of type G2) of the fami…
Fake projective planes are smooth complex surfaces of general type with Betti numbers equal to those of the usual projective plane. They come in complex conjugate pairs and have been classified as quotients of the two-dimensional ball by explicitly written arithmetic subgroups. In this paper we find equations of a projective model of a conjugate pair of fake projective planes by studying the geometry of the quotient of such surface by an order seven automorphism.
A fake quadric is a smooth projective surface that has the same rational cohomology as a smooth quadric surface but is not biholomorphic to one. We provide an explicit classification of all irreducible fake quadrics according to the commensurability class of their fundamental group. To accomplish this task, we develop a number of new techniques that explicitly bound the arithmetic invariants of a fake quadric and more generally of an arithmetic manifold of bounded volume arising from a form of SL_2 over a number field.
In this paper, we propose a new height function for a variety defined over a finitely generated field over Q. For this height function, we will prove Northcott's theorem and Bogomolov's conjecture, so that we can recover the original Raynaud's theorem (Manin-Mumford's conjecture).
A fake projective plane is a smooth complex surface which is not the complex projective plane but has the same Betti numbers as the complex projective plane. The first example of such a surface was constructed by David Mumford in 1979 using p-adic uniformization. Two more examples were found by Ishida and Kato by related method. Keum has recently given an example which is possibly different from the three known earlier. It is an interesting problem in complex algebraic geometry to determine all fake projective planes. Using the arithmeticity of the fundamental group of fake projective planes, …
In the present article, we provide examples of fake quadrics, that is, minimal complex surfaces of general type with the same numerical invariants as the smooth quadric in $\PP ^3$ which are quotients of the bidisc by an irreducible lattice of automorphisms. Moreover, we list classes of arithmetic lattices over a real quadratic number field which define a fake quadric and give general results towards a classification of all such fake quadrics.
We associate weight complexes of (homological) motives, and hence Euler characteristics in the Grothendieck group of motives, to arithmetic varieties and Deligne-Mumford stacks; this extends the results in the paper "Descent, Motives and K-theory" in volume 478 of Crelle, where a similar result was proved for varieties over a field of characteristic zero. We use K_0-motives with rational coefficients, rather than Chow motives, because we cannot appeal to resolution of singularities, but rather must use de Jong's results. In addition, for varieties over a field we prove a general result on cont…
This paper determines the inertia groups (isotropy groups) of the points of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack [Z/G] (considered over the category of smooth manifolds) that is realized from a quotient construction using a stacky fan or stacky polytope. The computation provides an explicit correspondence between certain geometric and combinatorial data. In particular, we obtain a computation of the connected component of the identity element $G_0 \subset G$ and the component group $G/G_0$ in terms of the underlying stacky fan, enabling us to characterize the toric DM stacks which are global quotient…
The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity r of a complex, projective variety V is an upper bound for the degrees of the hypersurfaces necessary to cut out V. In this note we give a bound for r when V is left invariant by a vector field on the ambient projective space. More precisely, assume V is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, for instance, a complete intersection. Assume as well that V projects to a normal-crossings hypersurface, which is the case when V is a curve with at most ordinary nodes. Then we show that r<m+s+2, where s is the dimension of V and m is the degree of the vector field. Our method…
In this paper, we define a certain Hodge-theoretic structure for an arbitrary variety X over the complex number field by using the theory of mixed Hodge module due to Morihiko Saito. We call it an arithmetic Hodge structure of X. It is shown that extension groups of arithmetic Hodge structure do not vanish even for degree $\geq2$. Moreover, we define higher Abel-Jacobi maps from Bloch's higher Chow groups of X to these extension groups. These maps essentially involve the classical Abel-Jacobi maps by Weil and Griffiths, and Mumford's infinitesimal invariants of 0-cycles on surfaces.
A theorem by Mumford implies that every automorphic line bundle on a pure open Shimura variety, equipped with an invariant smooth metric, can be uniquely extended as a line bundle on a toroidal compactification of the variety, in such a way that the metric acquires only logarithmic singularities. This result is the key of being able to compute arithmetic intersection numbers from these line bundles. Hence it is natural to ask whether Mumford's result remains valid for line bundles on mixed Shimura varieties. In this paper we examine the simplest case, namely the sheaf of Jacobi forms on the un…
Let $K$ be an infinite field and let $m_1,\ldots,m_n$ be a generalized arithmetic sequence of positive integers, i.e., there exist $h, d, m_1 \in\mathbb{Z}^+$ such that $m_i = h m_1 + (i-1)d$ for all $i \in \{2,\ldots,n\}$. We consider the projective monomial curve $\mathcal C\subset \mathbb{P}^{n}_{K}$ parametrically defined by $$x_1=s^{m_1}t^{m_n-m_1},\dots,x_{n-1}=s^{m_{n-1}}t^{m_n-m_{n-1}},x_n=s^{m_n},x_{n+1}=t^{m_n}.$$ In this work, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulay and Koszul properties of the homogeneous coordinate ring $K[\mathcal C]$ of $\mathcal C$. Whenever $K[\mathcal C]$ is Cohen…
This paper addresses problems related to the existence of arithmetic Macaulayfications of projective schemes. Let Y be the blow-up of a projective scheme X = Proj R along the ideal sheaf of I \subset R. It is known that there are embeddings Y \cong Proj k[(I^e)_c] for c \ge d(I)e + 1, where d(I) denotes the maximal generating degree of I, and that there exists a Cohen-Macaulay ring of the form k[(I^e)_c] if and only if H^0(Y,O_Y) = k, H^i(Y,O_Y) = 0 for i = 1,...,dim Y-1, Y is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. Cutkosky and Herzog asked when there is a linear bound on c and e ensuring that k[…
A Pfaff field on a projective space is a map from the sheaf of differential s-forms, for a certain s, to an invertible sheaf. The interesting ones are those arising from a Pfaff system, as they give rise to a distribution away from their singular locus. A subscheme of the projective space is said to be invariant under the Pfaff field, if the latter induces a Pfaff field on the subscheme. We give bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of invariant complete intersection subschemes (more generally, arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subschemes) of dimension s, depending on how singular these sc…
