In this paper, we show some applications to algebraic cycles by using higher Abel-Jacobi maps which were defined in [the author: Motives and algebraic de Rham cohomology]. In particular, we prove that the Beilinson conjecture on algebraic cycles over number fields implies the Bloch conjecture on zero-cycles on surfaces. Moreover, we construct a zero-cycle on a product of curves whose Mumford invariant vanishes, but not higher Abel-Jacobi invariant.
Given a smooth projective 3-fold Y, with $H^{3,0}(Y)=0$, the Abel-Jacobi map induces a morphism from each smooth variety parameterizing 1-cycles in Y to the intermediate Jacobian J(Y). We study in this paper the existence of families of 1-cycles in Y for which this induced morphism is surjective with rationally connected general fiber, and various applications of this property. When Y itself is rationally connected, we relate this property to the existence of an integral homological decomposition of the diagonal. We also study this property for cubic threefolds, completing the work of Iliev-Ma…

We show that certain abelian varieties A have the property that for every Hodge structure V in the cohomology of A, every effective Tate twist of V occurs in the cohomology of some abelian variety. We deduce the general Hodge conjecture for certain non-simple abelian varieties of type IV.
The semi-simplicity of the Hodge group is proved for a simple Abelian variety with a stable reduction of odd toric (reductive) rank. If, besides, the dimension of the Abelian variety is an odd integer, then the Hodge conjecture on algebraic cycles holds for it.
We prove the Hodge-D-conjecture for general K3 and Abelian surfaces. Some consequences of this result, e.g., on the levels of higher Chow groups of products of elliptic curves, are discussed.
Let SU_X(n,L) be the moduli space of rank n semistable vector bundles with fixed determinant L on a smooth projective genus g>1 curve X. Let SU_X^s(n,L) denote the open subset parameterizing stable bundles. We show that for small i, the mixed Hodge structure on H^i(SU_X^s(n, L), Q) is independent of the degree of L, and hence pure of weight i. Moreover any simple factors is, up to Tate twisting, isomorphic to a summand of a tensor power of H^1(X,Q). A more precise statement for i = 3, yields a Torelli theorem complementing earlier work of several authors. This is a replacement of our preprint …
We prove the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles on a principally polarized complex abelian variety whose minimal class is algebraic. In particular, any product of Jacobians of smooth projective curves over the complex numbers satisfies the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles. The main ingredient is a lift of the Fourier transform to integral Chow groups. Similarly, we prove the integral Tate conjecture for one-cycles on the Jacobian of a proper curve of compact type over the separable closure of a finitely generated field. Furthermore, abelian varieties satisfying such a conjecture …
We give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ=δ$ for genus 1. We also compute the classes of certain strata in the Satake compactification as elements of the push down of the tautological ring.
Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Let C be a smooth projective curve over k. We give a description of the moduli space of flat G-bundles in terms of the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles over the Frobenius twist C' of C. This description can be regarded as the non-abelian Hodge theory for curves in positive characteristic.
We explicitly describe cycle-class maps c_H from motivic cohomology to absolute Hodge cohomology, for smooth quasi-projective and (some) proper singular varieties, and compute special cases of the latter. For smooth projective varieties, we also study Hodge-theoretically defined "higher Abel-Jacobi maps" on the kernel of c_H; this leads to new results on nontrivial indecomposable higher Chow cycles in the regulator kernel.
Let K be a field of characteristic zero, f(x) be a polynomial with coefficients in K and without multiple roots. We consider the superelliptic curve C_{f,q} defined by y^q=f(x), where q=p^r is a power of a prime p. We determine the Hodge group of the simple factors of the Jacobian of C_{f,q}.
We prove Bloch's conjecture for correspondences on powers of complex abelian varieties, that are "generically defined". As an application we establish vanishing results for (skew-)symmetric cycles on powers of abelian varieties and we address a question of Voisin concerning (skew-)symmetric cycles on powers of K3 surfaces in the case of Kummer surfaces. We also prove Bloch's conjecture in the following situation. Let $γ$ be a correspondence between two abelian varieties $A$ and $B$ that can be written as a linear combination of products of symmetric divisors. Assume that $A$ is isogenous to th…
We formulate a version of the integral Hodge conjecture for categories, prove the conjecture for two-dimensional Calabi-Yau categories which are suitably deformation equivalent to the derived category of a K3 or abelian surface, and use this to deduce cases of the usual integral Hodge conjecture for varieties. Along the way, we prove a version of the variational integral Hodge conjecture for families of two-dimensional Calabi-Yau categories, as well as a general smoothness result for relative moduli spaces of objects in such families. Our machinery also has applications to the structure of int…
Let A be an abelian variety over C such that the semisimple part of the Hodge group of A is a product of copies of SU(p,1) for some p>1. We show that any effective Tate twist of a Hodge structure occurring in the cohomology of A is isomorphic to a Hodge structure in the cohomology of some abelian variety.
In this paper we give a general construction of transcendental lattices for K3 surfaces with real multiplication by arbitrary field up to degree 6 along with formula for their discriminants. We also show that all simple Abelian fourfolds with definite quaternionic multiplication can be realized as Kuga-Satake varieties of K3 surfaces with Picard rank 16 and real multiplication by a quadratic field by keeping track of the arithmetic input on both sides.
We show that the usual Hodge conjecture implies the general Hodge conjecture for certain abelian varieties of type III, and use this to deduce the general Hodge conjecture for all powers of certain 4-dimensional abelian varieties of type III. We also show the existence of a Hodge structure M such that M occurs in the cohomology of an abelian variety, but the Tate twist M(1) does not occur in the cohomology of any abelian variety, even though it is effective.
We show that any effective Hodge structure of CM-type occurs (without having to take a Tate twist) in the cohomology of some CM abelian variety over C. As a consequence we get a simple proof of the theorem (due to Hazama) that the usual Hodge conjecture for the class of all CM abelian varieties implies the general Hodge conjecture for the same class.
The primitive cohomology of the theta divisor of a principally polarized abelian variety of dimension $g$ is a Hodge structure of level $g-3$. The Hodge conjecture predicts that it is contained in the image, under the Abel-Jacobi map, of the cohomology of a family of curves in the theta divisor. In this paper we use the Prym map to show that this version of the Hodge conjecture is true for the theta divisor of a general abelian fivefold.
This paper determines all the possible endomorphism algebras for polarizable Q-Hodge structures of type (n,0,...,0,n). This generalizes the classification of the possible endomorphism algebras of abelian varieties by Albert and Shimura. As with abelian varieties, the most interesting feature of the classification is that in certain cases, every Hodge structure on which a given algebra acts must have extra endomorphisms.
If $X$ is a smooth projective variety over ${\mathbb R}$, the Hodge ${\mathcal D}$-conjecture of Beilinson asserts the surjectivity of the regulator map to Deligne cohomology with real coefficients. It is known to be false in general but is true in some special cases like Abelian surfaces and $K3$-surfaces - and still expected to be true when the variety is defined over a number field. We prove an analogue of this for Abelian surfaces at a non-Archimedean place where the surface has bad reduction. Here the Deligne cohomology is replaced by a certain Chow group of the special fibre. The case of…
Let $A$ be an Abelian variety of dimension $n$. For $0<p<2n$ an odd integer, Sampson constructed a surjective homomorphism $π:J^p(A)\rightarrow A$, where $J^p(A)$ is the higher Weil Jacobian variety of $A$. Let $\widehatω$ be a fixed form in $H^{1,1}(J^p(A),\mathbb{Q})$, and $N=\dim (J^p(A))$. He observes that if the map $π_*(\widehat{ω}^{N-p-1}\wedge .): H^{1,1}(J^p(A),\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow H^{n-p,n-p}(A,\mathbb{Q})$ is injective, then the Hodge conjecture is true for $A$ in bidegree $(p,p)$. In this paper, we give some clarification of the approach and show that the map above is {not inject…
This paper forms the major portion of a talk given at the International Colloquium on Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry at TIFR, Mumbai in Jan 2000. We look at the problem of detecting cycles with trivial Abel-Jacobi invariant. M. Green proposed a Hodge-theoretic method to which C. Voisin found a counter-example. We present an easier example. We also propose another possible invariant to detect these classes using Hodge Theory. Similar methods have been proposed earlier by M. Asakura and M. Saito.
We prove, following Deligne and André, that the Hodge classes on abelian varieties of CM-type can be expressed in terms of divisor classes and split Weil classes, and we describe some consequences. In particular, we show that Grothendieck's standard conjecture of Lefschetz type implies the Hodge conjecture for abelian varieties (Abdulali, André, ...).
In this paper, we define a certain Hodge-theoretic structure for an arbitrary variety X over the complex number field by using the theory of mixed Hodge module due to Morihiko Saito. We call it an arithmetic Hodge structure of X. It is shown that extension groups of arithmetic Hodge structure do not vanish even for degree $\geq2$. Moreover, we define higher Abel-Jacobi maps from Bloch's higher Chow groups of X to these extension groups. These maps essentially involve the classical Abel-Jacobi maps by Weil and Griffiths, and Mumford's infinitesimal invariants of 0-cycles on surfaces.
We review what is known about the Hodge conjecture for abelian varieties, with some emphasis on how Mumford-Tate groups have been applied to this problem.
Mumford constructed a family of abelian fourfolds with special stucture not characterized by endomorphism ring. Galluzzi showed that the weight 2 Hodge structure of such a variety decomposes into Hodge substructures via the action of Mumford-Tate group, one of which is of K3 type with Hodge number (1,7,1). We will compute the intersection form of such a Hodge structure and provide a canonical integral Hodge structure on this subspace. Furthermore, we shall show two applications of this invariant. Firstly, using the above formula we shall show that every K3 surface obtained in this way will adm…
Deligne has conjectured that certain mixed Hodge theoretic invariants of complex algebraic invariants are motivic. This conjecture specializes to an algebraic construction of the Jacobian for smooth projective curves, which was done by A. Weil. The conjecture (and one-motives) are motivated by means of Jacobians, generalized Jacobians of Rosenlicht, and Serre's generalized Albanese varieties. We discuss the connections with the Hodge and the generalized Hodge conjecture. We end with some applications to number theory by providing partial answers to questions of Serre, Katz and Jannsen.
In this paper the authors consider a certain toroidal compactification of the moduli space of degenerations of (1,p)-polarized abelian surfaces with (canonical) level structure. Using Hodge theory we give a proof that a degenerate abelian surface associated to a corank 1 boundary point is (almost) completely determined by the boundary point. The crucial ingredient in the proof is the Local Invariant Cycle theorem which relates the variation of Hodge structure to the mixed Hodge structure on the singular surface.
We study the higher Abel-Jacobi invariant defined recently by M. Green. We first construct a counterexample to the injectivity of Green's higher Abel-Jacobi map. On the other hand, we prove that the higher Abel-Jacobi map governs Mumford's pull-back of holomorphic forms. We deduce from this that if a surface has holomorphic 2-forms, the image of the higher Abel-Jacobi map, defined on its group of zero-cycles Albanese equivalent to 0, has infinite dimensional image.
We construct an Abel-Jacobi type map on the homologically trivial part of Lawson homology groups. It generalizes the Abel-Jacobi map constructed by Griffiths. By using a result of H. Clemens, we give some examples of smooth projective manifolds with infinite generated Lawson homology groups L_pH_k(X,Q) when k>2p.
Let $f\col\C\ra B$ be a regular local smoothing of a nodal curve. In this paper, we find a modular description of the Abel--Néron map having values in Esteves's fine compactified Jacobian and extending the degree-2 Abel--Jacobi map of the generic fiber of $f$
In this paper we study the second integral cohomology of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on projective K3 surfaces. If $S$ is a projective K3 surface, $v$ a Mukai vector and $H$ a $v-$generic polarization on $S$, we show that $H^{2}(M_{v},\mathbb{Z})$ is a free $\mathbb{Z}-$module of rank 23 carrying a pure weight-two Hodge structure and a lattice structure, with respect to which $H^{2}(M_{v},\mathbb{Z})$ is Hodge isometric to the Hodge sublattice $v^{\perp}$ of the Mukai lattice of $S$. Similar results are proved for Abelian surfaces.
We investigate questions of an arithmetic nature related to the Abel-Jacobi map. We give a criterion for the zero locus of a normal function to be defined over a number field, and we give some comparison theorems with the Abel-Jacobi map coming from continuous étale cohomology.
We prove and generalize an observation of Green and Griffiths on the infinitesimal form of the Abel-Jacobi map. As an application, we prove that the infinitesimal form of a conjecture by Griffiths and Harris is true.
We study in this article the cohomological properties of Lagrangian families on projective hyper-Kähler manifolds. First, we give a criterion for the vanishing of Abel-Jacobi maps of Lagrangian families. Using this criterion, we show that under a natural condition, if the variation of Hodge structures on the degree $1$ cohomomology of the fibers of the Lagrangian family is maximal, its Abel-Jacobi map is trivial. We also construct Lagrangian families on generalized Kummer varieties whose Abel-Jacobi map is not trivial, showing that our criterion is optimal.
For a complex projective manifold, Walker has defined a regular homomorphism lifting Griffiths' Abel-Jacobi map on algebraically trivial cycle classes to a complex abelian variety, which admits a finite homomorphism to the Griffiths intermediate Jacobian. Recently Suzuki gave an alternate, Hodge-theoretic, construction of this Walker Abel-Jacobi map. We provide a third construction based on a general lifting property for surjective regular homomorphisms, and prove that the Walker Abel-Jacobi map descends canonically to any field of definition of the complex projective manifold. In addition, we…
We determine the second fundamental form of a variation of Hodge Structure of a smooth projective hypersurface using the classical identification of the Hodge structure and the action of the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure with pieces of the Jacobian Ideal of the hypersurface. This simple algebraic description also implies that, in this case, the variation of Hodge structure satisfies a new set of second order partial differential equations.Comments are welcome!
This paper gives an introduction to Kuga-Satake varieties and discusses some aspects of the Hodge conjecture related to them. Kuga-Satake varieties are abelian varieties associated to certain weight two Hodge structures, for example the second cohomology group of a K3 surface. We give a detailed account of the construction of Kuga-Satake varieties and of their decomposition in simple subvarieties. We recall the Hodge conjecture and we point out a connection between the Hodge conjecture for abelian fourfolds and Kuga-Satake varieties. We discuss the implications of the Hodge conjecture on the g…
We discuss an Abel-Jacobi invariant for algebraic cobordism cycles whose image in topological cobordism vanishes. The existence of this invariant follows by abstract arguments from the construction of Hodge filtered cohomology theories in joint work of Michael J. Hopkins and the author. In this paper, we give a concrete description of the new Abel-Jacobi map and Hodge filtered cohomology groups for projective smooth complex varieties.
The purpose of this paper is to construct non-trivial elements in the Abel-Jacobi kernels in any codimension by specializing correspondences with non-trivial Hodge-theoretical invariants at points with different transcendence degrees over a subfield in $\CC$.
For an algebraic (n-1)-cycle Z on a complex projective (2n-1)-manifold X, P. Griffiths conjectured that, if Z is algebraically equivalent to zero and if the incidence divisor of Z on every family of (n-1)-cycles is principal, then the Abel-Jacobi image of Z in the intermediate Jacobian J(X) of X is a point of finite order. Using a recent generalization of the classical height pairing, we give a proof of a stronger statement, namely that the Abel-Jacobi image of Z is zero.
