This paper gives an introduction to Kuga-Satake varieties and discusses some aspects of the Hodge conjecture related to them. Kuga-Satake varieties are abelian varieties associated to certain weight two Hodge structures, for example the second cohomology group of a K3 surface. We give a detailed account of the construction of Kuga-Satake varieties and of their decomposition in simple subvarieties. We recall the Hodge conjecture and we point out a connection between the Hodge conjecture for abelian fourfolds and Kuga-Satake varieties. We discuss the implications of the Hodge conjecture on the geometry of surfaces whose second cohomology group has a Kuga-Satake variety. We conclude with some recent results on Kuga-Satake varieties of Hodge structures on which an imaginary quadratic field acts.
We extend the Kuga-Satake construction to the case of limit mixed Hodge structures of K3 type. We use this to study the geometry and Hodge theory of degenerations of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties, associated to polarized variations of K3 type Hodge structures over the punctured disc.
We analyze the relationship between abelian fourfolds of Weil type and Hodge structures of type K3, and we extend some of these correspondences to the case of arbitrary dimension.
The endomorphism algebra of a K3 type Hodge structure is a totally real field or a CM field. In this paper we give a low brow introduction to the case of a totally real field. We give existence results for the Hodge structures, for their polarizations and for certain K3 surfaces. We consider the Kuga Satake variety of these Hodge structures and we discuss some examples. Finally we indicate various open problems related to the Hodge conjecture.
The Kuga-Satake construction associates to a K3 type polarized weight 2 Hodge structure H an abelian variety A such that H is a quotient Hodge structure of H^2(A). The first step is to consider the Clifford algebra of H. It turns out that it is endowed with a weight 2 Hodge structure compatible with the algebra structure. We show more generally that a weight 2 polarized Hodge structure which carries a compatible (unitary, associative) algebra structure is a quotient of the H^2 of an abelian variety.
We complete Satake's classification of Kuga fiber varieties by showing that if a representation $ρ$ of a hermitian algebraic group satisfies Satake's necessary conditions, then some multiple of $ρ$ defines a Kuga fiber variety.
This note explains an approach to producing examples of 'generalized Kuga-Satake theory' based on establishing special cases of Simpson's conjecture that rigid local systems are motivic. This strategy is then carried out, using work of Bogner and Reiter, in a low-dimensional example, producing the first non-trivial examples of generalized Kuga-Satake theory outside of the Tannakian category of motives generated by abelian varieties. For a more robust collection of examples, see the sequel "Generalized Kuga-Satake theory and rigid local systems, II: rigid Hecke eigensheaves."

Kuga and Satake associate with every polarized complex K3 surface (X,L) a complex abelian variety called the Kuga-Satake abelian variety of (X,L). We use this construction to define morphisms between moduli spaces of polarized K3 surface with certain level structures and moduli spaces of polarized abelian varieties with level structure over C. In this note we study these morphisms. We prove first that they are defined over finite extensions of Q. Then we show that they extend in positive characteristic. In this way we give an indirect construction of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties over an arbit…
This paper uses rigid Hecke eigensheaves, building on Yun's work on the construction of motives with exceptional Galois groups, to produce the first robust examples of `generalized Kuga-Satake theory' outside the Tannakian category of motives generated by abelian varieties. To strengthen our description of the `motivic' nature of Kuga-Satake lifts, we digress to establish a result that should be of independent interest: for any quasi-projective variety over a (finitely-generated) characteristic zero field, the associated weight-graded of its intersection cohomology arises from a motivated moti…
Let M be a simple hyperkahler manifold. Kuga-Satake construction gives an embedding of H^2(M,C) into the second cohomology of a torus, compatible with the Hodge structure. We construct a torus T and an embedding of the graded cohomology space H^*(M,C) \to H^{*+l}(T,C) for some l, which is compatible with the Hodge structures and the Poincare pairing. Moreover, this embedding is compatible with an action of the Lie algebra generated by all Lefschetz sl(2)-triples on M.
Using the Kuga-Satake correspondence we provide an effective algorithm for the computation of the Picard and Brauer groups of K3 surfaces of degree 2 over number fields.
We use a result of van Geemen to determine the endomorphism algebra of the Kuga--Satake variety of a K3 surface with real multiplication. This is applied to prove the Hodge conjecture for self-products of double covers of $\PP^2$ which are ramified along six lines.
We study a property of cycle spaces in connection with degenerating Hodge structures of odd-weight, and construct maps from some partial compactifications of period domains to the Satake compatifications of Siegel spaces. These maps are a generalization of the maps from the toroidal compactifications of Siegel spaces to the Satake compactifications. We also show the continuity of these maps for the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds with h^{2,1}=1.
For a reductive group $G$ we equip the category of $G_\mathcal{O}$-equivariant polarizable pure Hodge modules on the affine Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_G$ with a structure of neutral Tannakian category. We show that it is equivalent to a twisted tensor product of the category of representations of the Langlands dual group and the category of pure polarizable Hodge structures.
We construct a K3 surface whose transcendental lattice has a self-isomorphism which is not a linear combination of self-isomorphisms over $\mathbb{Q}$ which preserve cup products up to nonzero multiples. Products of it with itself give candidates for counterexamples to the Hodge conjecture which may be of interest. We also study the Kuga-Satake construction in relation to these examples.
Double planes branched in 6 lines give a famous example of K3 surfaces. Their moduli are well understood and related to abelian fourfolds of Weil type. We compare these two moduli interpretations and in particular divisors on the moduli spaces. On the K3 side, this is achieved with the help of elliptic fibrations. We also study the Kuga-Satake correspondence on these special divisors.
In this paper we give a general construction of transcendental lattices for K3 surfaces with real multiplication by arbitrary field up to degree 6 along with formula for their discriminants. We also show that all simple Abelian fourfolds with definite quaternionic multiplication can be realized as Kuga-Satake varieties of K3 surfaces with Picard rank 16 and real multiplication by a quadratic field by keeping track of the arithmetic input on both sides.
We show that the classical Kuga-Satake construction gives rise, away from characteristic 2, to an open immersion from the moduli of primitively polarized K3 surfaces (of any fixed degree) to a certain regular integral model for a Shimura variety of orthogonal type. This allows us to attach to every polarized K3 surface in odd characteristic an abelian variety such that divisors on the surface can be identified with certain endomorphisms of the attached abelian variety. In turn, this reduces the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces over finitely generated fields of odd characteristic to a version of…
We give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ=δ$ for genus 1. We also compute the classes of certain strata in the Satake compactification as elements of the push down of the tautological ring.
Recent papers by Markman and O'Grady give, besides their main results on the Hodge conjecture and on hyperkaehler varieties, surprising and explicit descriptions of families of abelian fourfolds of Weil type with trivial discriminant. They also provide a new perspective on the well-known fact that these abelian varieties are Kuga Satake varieties for certain weight two Hodge structures of rank six. In this paper we give a pedestrian introduction to these results. The spinor map, which is defined using a half-spin representation of SO(8), is used intensively. For simplicity, we use basic repres…
We study the top intersection numbers of the boundary and Hodge class divisors on toroidal compactifications of the moduli space $A_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties and compute those numbers that live away from the stratum which lies over the closure of $A_{g-3}$ in the Satake compactification.
We construct projective toroidal compactifications for integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type. We also construct integral models of the minimal (Satake-Baily-Borel) compactification. Our results essentially reduce the problem to understanding the integral models themselves. As such, they cover all previously known cases of PEL type, as well as all cases of Hodge type involving parahoric level structures. At primes where the level is hyperspecial, we show that our compactifications are canonical in a precise sense. We also provide a new proof of Y. Morita's conjecture on the everywh…
Shafarevich conjecture/problem is about the finiteness of isomorphism classes of a family of varieties defined over a number field with good reduction outside a finite collection of places. For K3 surfaces, such a finiteness result was proved by Y. She. For hyper-Kähler varieties, which are higher-dimensional analogs of K3 surfaces, Y. André has verified the Shafarevich conjecture for hyper-Kähler varieties of a given dimension and admitting a very ample polarization of bounded degree. In this paper, we provide a unification of both results by proving the (unpolarized) Shafarevich conjecture f…
