Deligne has conjectured that certain mixed Hodge theoretic invariants of complex algebraic invariants are motivic. This conjecture specializes to an algebraic construction of the Jacobian for smooth projective curves, which was done by A. Weil. The conjecture (and one-motives) are motivated by means of Jacobians, generalized Jacobians of Rosenlicht, and Serre's generalized Albanese varieties. We discuss the connections with the Hodge and the generalized Hodge conjecture. We end with some applications to number theory by providing partial answers to questions of Serre, Katz and Jannsen.
We define and compare two different definitions of Chow motives for Deligne-Mumford stacks, associated with two definitions of Chow rings. The main result we prove is that both categories of motives are equivalent to the usual category of motives of algebraic varieties, but the motives of a given stack associated with both theories are not isomorphic. We will also give some examples of motives associated with some alegbraic stacks.
We introduce the notion of extension of 1-motives. Using the dictionary between strictly commutative Picard stacks and complexes of abelian sheaves concentrated in degrees -1 and 0, we check that an extension of 1-motives induces an extension of the corresponding strictly commutative Picard stacks. We compute the Hodge, the de Rham and the l-adic realizations of an extention of 1-motives. Using these results we can prove Deligne's conjecture on extensions of 1-motives.
For every smooth and separated Deligne-Mumford stack $F$, we associate a motive $M(F)$ in Voevodsky's category of mixed motives with rational coefficients $\mathbf{DM}^{\eff}(k,\mathbb{Q})$. When $F$ is proper over a field of characteristic 0, we compare $M(F)$ with the Chow motive associated to $F$ by Toen (\cite{t}). Without the properness condition we show that $M(F)$ is a direct summand of the motive of a smooth quasi-projective variety.
We reformulate a conjecture of Deligne on 1-motives by using the integral weight filtration of Gillet and Soulé on cohomology, and prove it. This implies the original conjecture up to isogeny. If the degree of cohomology is at most two, we can prove the conjecture for the Hodge realization without isogeny, and even for 1-motives with torsion.
We show that the pairing on de Rham realizations of 1-motives in "Theorie di Hodge III", IHES 44, can be defined over any base scheme and we prove that it gives rise to a perfect duality if one is working with a 1-motive and its Cartier dual. Furthermore we study universal extensions of 1-motives and their relation with $\natural$-extensions.
We define Albanese and Picard 1-motives of smooth (simplicial) schemes over a perfect field. For smooth proper schemes, these are the classical Albanese and Picard varieties. For a curve, these are t he homological 1-motive of Lichtenbaum and the motivic $H^1$ of Deligne. This paper proves a conjecture of Deligne about providing an algebraic description, via 1-motives, of the first homology and cohomology groups of a complex algebraic variety. (L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas have also proved this independently.) It also contains a purely algebraic proof of Lichtenbaum's conjecture that the …
In this paper, we give a description of Deligne's periods $c^\pm$ for tensor product of pure motives $M \otimes M'$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of the period invariants attached to $M$ and $M'$ by Yoshida. The period relations proved by the author and Raghuram in an earlier paper follow from the results of this paper.
We introduce new motivic invariants of arbitrary varieties over a perfect field. These cohomological invariants take values in the category of one-motives (considered up to isogeny in positive characteristic). The algebraic definition of these invariants presented here proves a conjecture of Deligne. Applications include some cases of conjectures of Serre, Katz and Jannsen on the independence of $\ell$ of parts of the étale cohomology of arbitrary varieties over number fields and finite fields.
We construct and study a candidate for the standard motivic t-structure on the triangulated category of relative cohomological 1-motives with rational coefficients over a noetherian finite dimensional scheme S. This t-structure is defined as a generated t-structure, and we show it is non-degenerate. We relate its heart MM^1(S) with Deligne 1-motives over S; in particular, when S is regular, the category of Deligne 1-motives embeds in MM^1(S) fully faithfully. We also study the inclusion of DA^1(S) into the larger category DA^{coh}(S) of relative cohomological motives on S, and prove that its r…
We prove that the existence of an automorphism of finite order on a (defined over a number field) variety X implies the existence of algebraic linear relations between the logarithm of certain periods of X and the logarithm of special values of the Gamma-function. This implies that a slight variation of results by Anderson, Colmez and Gross on the periods of CM abelian varieties is valid for a larger class of CM motives. In particular, we prove a weak form of the period conjecture of Gross-Deligne. Our proof relies on the arithmetic fixed point formula (equivariant arithmetic Riemann-Roch theo…
This is the final version of the 2007 preprint titled "On the derived category of 1-motives, I". It has been substantially expanded to contain a motivic proof of (two thirds of) Deligne's conjecture on 1-motives with rational coefficients, hence the new title. Compared to the 2007 preprint, the additions mainly concern an abstract theory of realisations with weight filtrations; Deligne's conjecture is tackled though them by an adjunction game.
In this paper we provide a full account of the Weil conjectures including Deligne's proof of the conjecture about the eigenvalues of the Frobenius endomorphism. Section 1 is an introduction into the subject. Our exposition heavily relies on the Etale Cohomology theory of Grothendieck so I included an overview in Section 2. Once one verifies (or takes for granted) the results therein, proofs of most of the Weil conjectures are straightforward as we show in Section 3. Sections 4-8 constitute the proof of the remaining conjecture. The exposition is mostly similar to that of Deligne in [7] though …
Let EHM be Nori's category of effective homological mixed motives. In this paper, we consider the thick abelian subcategory EHM_1 generated by the i-th relative homology of pairs of varieties for i = 0,1. We show that EHM_1 is naturally equivalent to the abelian category M_1 of Deligne 1-motives with torsion; this is our main theorem. Along the way, we obtain several interesting results. Firstly, we realize M_1 as the universal abelian category obtained, using Nori's formalism, from the Betti representation of an explicit diagram of curves. Secondly, we obtain a conceptual proof of a theorem o…
This note is based on my talk at ICCM 2013, Taipei. We give an exposition of the group-theoretic method and recent results on the questions of non-emptiness and dimension of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in affine flag varieties.
We give negative answers to certain questions on abelian semisimple tensor categories raised by Bruno Kahn and Charles A. Weibel in connection with the preprint of Kahn "On the multiplicities of a motive" (arXiv:math/0610446), now published as Parts I and IV of "Zeta functions and motives", Pure Appl. Math. Q. 5 (2009), no. 1, part 2, 507-570. For the most interesting examples we used Deligne's category Rep(S_t,F) of representations of the "symmetric group S_t with t not an integer" with F any algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. This is an interesting family of tensor categories…
In this paper, we prove a motivic enhancement of the theorem of the fixed part in Hodge theory due to Deligne. In the pure motivic case, this was done for the first time by André in [And96]. Our main result is an extension to the mixed case, which strengthens a result by Arapura [Ara13] and also provides an alternative and simpler proof, in the framework of Nori motives, of a result by Ayoub [Ayo14].
In this article, we will give the Deligne 1-motives up to isogeny corresponding to the $\mathbb{Q}$-limiting mixed Hodge structures of semi-stable degenerations of curves, by using logarithmic structures and Steenbrink's cohomological mixed Hodge complexes associated to semi-stable degenerations of curves.
We consider the category of Deligne 1-motives over a perfect field k of exponential characteristic p and its derived category for a suitable exact structure after inverting p. As a first result, we provide a fully faithful embedding into an etale version of Voevodsky's triangulated category of geometric motives. Our second main result is that this full embedding "almost" has a left adjoint, that we call \LAlb. Applied to the motive of a variety we thus get a bounded complex of 1-motives, that we compute fully for smooth varieties and partly for singular varieties. As an application we give mot…
We consider the crystalline realization of Deligne's 1-motives in positive characteristics and prove a comparison theorem with the De Rham realization of liftings to zero characteristic. We then show that one dimensional crystalline cohomology of an algebraic variety, defined by universal cohomological descent via de Jong's alterations, coincide with the crystalline realization of the (cohomological) Picard 1-motive, over perfect fields.
In this article we prove some period relations for the ratio of Deligne's periods for certain tensor product motives. These period relations give a motivic interpretation for certain algebraicity results for ratios of successive critical values for Rankin-Selberg L-functions for ${\rm GL}_n \times {\rm GL}_{n'}$ proved by Günter Harder and the second author.
We show that the statement analogous to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties holds for 1-motives on unipotent parts. This is done by comparing the unipotent part of the associated Hodge group and the unipotent part of the image of the absolute Galois group with the unipotent part of the motivic fundamental group. Contains an appendix by P. Deligne. In this version: Minor corrections here and there. The Main result about the image of the Galois representations is now enriched by an adelic statement.
The goal of this paper is to develop the theory of Deligne-Beilinson cohomology of affine groups with a mixed Hodge structure. The motivation comes from Hodge theory and the study of motives, where such groups appear. Several of Francis Brown's period computations (arXiv:1407.5167) are interpreted as elements of the DB cohomology of the relative unipotent completion of $SL_2(Z)$ and their cup products. The results in this paper are used in arXiv:1403.6443 where they are used to prove that Pollack's quadratic relations are motivic.
Over a subfield of the field of complex numbers, the Hodge realization of a geometrical motive is defined and represented as the cohomology of a mixed Hodge DG-complex in the sense of Deligne. Both filtrations are represented by truncation functors, on a Bondarko weight complex for the weight filtration and on the De Rham motivic complex for the Hodge one. The Deligne-Beilinson realization is also constructed. This preprint partially replaces the former "Réalisation des complexes motiviques de Voevodsky".
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds and Deligne's conjecture on the special values of the $L$-functions of critical motives. Using the theory of mirror symmetry, we will develop a method to compute the Deligne's period for a Calabi-Yau threefold in the mirror family of a one-parameter mirror pair. We will give two examples to show how this method works, and we will express the Deligne's period in terms of the classical periods of the threeform. Using this method, we will compute the Deligne's period of a Calabi-Yau threefold studied…

Formal (mixed) Hodge structures FHS are introduced in such a way that the Hodge realization of Deligne's 1-motives extends to a realization from Laumon's 1-motives to formal Hodge structures of level 1, providing an equivalence of categories. For the sake of exposition we here confine our study to level 1 mixed Hodge structures. However, it is conceivable and suitable to consider formal mixed Hodge structures with arbitrary Hodge numbers: generalizing our definition herebelow it's not that difficult and we will treat such a matter nextly.
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of K3 surfaces and the geometry of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. We will prove that the mirror map of the Dwork family is equal to the period map of the Legendre family. This result provides an interesting explanation to the modularities of counting functions for K3 surfaces from the mirror symmetry point of view. We will also discuss the relations between the arithmetic geometry of smooth fibers of the Fermat pencil (Dwork family) and that of the smooth fibers of the Legendre family, e.g. Shioda-Inose structure…

Assuming specific instances of two general conjectures in arithmetic algebraic geometry (bijectivity of $p$-adic regulator maps, injectivity of $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi maps), we prove several cases of the $p$-part of the Tamagawa number conjecture ($p$-TNC) of Bloch-Kato and Fontaine-Perrin-Riou for (homological) motives of modular forms of even weight $\geq4$ in analytic rank $1$. More precisely, we prove our results for a large class of newforms $f$ and prime numbers $p$ that are ordinary for $f$ and such that the weight of $f$ is congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$. Inspired by work of W. Zhang i…
This paper concerns the Algebraic Sato--Tate and Sato--Tate conjectures, based on Serre's original motivic formulation, with an eye towards explicit computations of Sato--Tate groups. We build on the algebraic framework for the Sato--Tate conjecture introduced in a previous paper, which used Deligne's motivic category for absolute Hodge cycles and was restricted to motives of odd weight. Here, we allow general weight and some other motivic categories, notably André's motivic category of motivated cycles; moreover, some results are also new in the odd weight case. The paper consists of two part…
We apply Wildeshaus's theory of motivic intermediate extensions to the motivic decomposition conjecture, formulated by Deninger-Murre and Corti-Hanamura. We first obtain a general motivic decomposition for the Chow motive of an arbitrary smooth projective family $f:X \rightarrow S$ whose geometric fibers are Tate. Using Voevodsky's motives with rational coefficients, the formula is valid for an arbitrary regular base $S$, without assuming the existence of a base field or even of a prime integer $\ell$ invertible on $S$. This result, and some of Bondarko' ideas, lead us to a generalized formula…
In this paper we prove the Tamagawa number conjecture of Bloch and Kato for CM elliptic curves using a new explicit description of the specialization of the elliptic polylogarithm. The Tamagawa number conjecture describes the special values of the L-function of a CM elliptic curve in terms of the regulator maps of the K-theory of the variety into Deligne and etale cohomology. The regulator map to Deligne cohomology was computed by Deninger with the help of the Eisenstein symbol. For the Tamagawa number conjecture one needs an understanding of the $p$-adic regulator on the subspace of K-theory …
The concept of weights on the cohomology of algebraic varieties was initiated by fundamental ideas and work of A. Grothendieck and P. Deligne. It is deeply connected with the concept of motives and appeared first on the singular cohomology as the weights of (possibly mixed) Hodge structures and on the etale cohomology as the weights of eigenvalues of Frobenius. But weights also appear on algebraic fundamental groups and in p-adic Hodge theory, where they become only visible after applying the comparison functors of Fontaine. After rehearsing various versions of weights, we explain some more re…
