Let SU_X(n,L) be the moduli space of rank n semistable vector bundles with fixed determinant L on a smooth projective genus g>1 curve X. Let SU_X^s(n,L) denote the open subset parameterizing stable bundles. We show that for small i, the mixed Hodge structure on H^i(SU_X^s(n, L), Q) is independent of the degree of L, and hence pure of weight i. Moreover any simple factors is, up to Tate twisting, isomorphic to a summand of a tensor power of H^1(X,Q). A more precise statement for i = 3, yields a Torelli theorem complementing earlier work of several authors. This is a replacement of our preprint Intermediate Jacobians of Moduli spaces which contained a gap.
We give lower bounds for dimensions of the centers of Hodge groups of superelliptic jacobians. In "generic case" this bound is precise. We also discuss dimensions of simple abelian subvarieties of superelliptic jacobians.
We announce the construction of toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We include an application to the analyticity of zero loci of some functions.
This is an expository article on the recent developments of Hodge theory on moduli spaces of smooth projective varieties with semi-ample canonical line bundles.
We define and construct the real analytic moduli stack of pluriharmonic bundles on a compact Kaehler manifold X, and show how this is equipped with Hodge and quaternionic structures. This stack maps to the de Rham moduli stack, giving rise to preferred sections of the Deligne-Hitchin twistor stack. We then show how the non-abelian mixed Hodge structures on Malcev homotopy types X can be extended to objects over the pluriharmonic moduli stack.
In this paper we will study the moduli spaces of log Hodge structures introduced by Kato-Usui. This moduli space is a partial compactification of a discrete quotient of a period domain. We treat the following 2 cases: (A) the case where the period domain is Hermitian symmetric, (B) the case where the Hodge structures are of the mirror quintic type. Especially we study a property of the torsor.
We give upper and lower bounds for the order of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties.
We give upper and lower bounds for the order of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. We also give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ_1=δ$ for genus 1.
The goal is to verify the Hodge conjecture (and some related conjectures) for certain moduli spaces. It is shown that the (generalized) Hodge conjecture holds for the projective moduli spaces of vector bundles over an abelian or K3 surface or a curve if it holds for all powers of the surface or curve. In the latter case, the curve can be replaced by its Jacobian. As a consequence the generalized Hodge conjecture holds for these moduli spaces when the curve is very general. A similar result is proved for the Hilbert schemes of points over an arbitrary surface.
In this article, we prove the Hodge conjecture for a desingularization of the moduli space of rank 2, semi-stable, torsion-free sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant over a very general irreducible nodal curve of genus at least 2. We also compute the algebraic Poincare polynomial of the associated cohomology ring.
In this paper we consider moduli spaces of coherent systems on an elliptic curve. We compute their Hodge polynomials and determine their birational types in some cases. Moreover we prove that certain moduli spaces of coherent systems are isomorphic. This last result uses the Fourier-Mukai transform of coherent systems introduced by Hernández Ruiperez and Tejero Prieto.
Let K be a field of characteristic zero, f(x) be a polynomial with coefficients in K and without multiple roots. We consider the superelliptic curve C_{f,q} defined by y^q=f(x), where q=p^r is a power of a prime p. We determine the Hodge group of the simple factors of the Jacobian of C_{f,q}.
We study the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It was shown by Thaddeus and Hausel (in rank 2) and Markman (in general rank) that the rational cohomology ring of this space is generated by universal classes. In this paper, we use their results to compute the Hodge structure on the cohomology of this moduli space. We show that the natural Hodge structure on H^k is pure of weight k.
We give uniformizations of the Klein quartic curve and the Fermat septic curve as Shimura curves parametrizing Abelian $6$-folds with endomorphisms $\ZZ[\z_7]$.
We investigate the Hodge structure of the singular O'Grady's six and ten dimensional examples of irreducible symplectic varieties. In particular, we compute some of their Betti numbers and their Euler characteristic. As consequence, we deduce that these varieties do not have finite quotient singularities answering a question of Bakker and Lehn.
Inductive formulas for the Betti numbers of the moduli spaces of stable holomorphic vector bundles of coprime rank and degree over a fixed Riemann surface of genus at least two were obtained by Harder, Narasimhan, Desale and Ramanan using number theoretic methods and the Weil conjectures and were rederived by Atiyah and Bott using gauge theory. In this note we observe that there are similar inductive formulas for determining the Hodge numbers of these moduli spaces.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. A holomorphic pair on $X$ is a couple $(E,ϕ)$, where $E$ is a holomorphic bundle over $X$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$, and $ϕ\in H^0(E)$ is a holomorphic section. In this paper, we determine the Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces of rank 2 pairs, using the theory of mixed Hodge structures. We also deal with the case in which $E$ has fixed determinant.
Around 1970 Griffiths introduced the moduli of polarized Hodge structures/the period domain $D$ and described a dream to enlarge $D$ to a moduli space of degenerating polarized Hodge structures. Since in general $D$ is not a Hermitian symmetric domain, he asked for the existence of a certain automorphic cohomology theory for $D$, generalizing the usual notion of automorphic forms on symmetric Hermitian domains. Since then there have been many efforts in the first part of Griffith's dream but the second part still lives in darkness. The objective of the present text is two-folded. First, we giv…
There is an isomorphism between the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable holomorphic triples and some of the critical submanifolds of the moduli space of $k$-Higgs bundles of rank three, whose elements $(E,φ^k)$ correspond to variations of Hodge structure, VHS. There are special embeddings on the moduli spaces of $k$-Higgs bundles of rank three. The main objective here is to study the cohomology of the critical submanifolds of such moduli spaces, extending those embeddings to moduli spaces of holomorphic triples.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. A holomorphic triple $(E_1,E_2,ϕ)$ on $X$ consists of two holomorphic vector bundles $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$ over $X$ and a holomorphic map $ϕ\colon E_{2} \to E_{1}$. There is a concept of stability for triples which depends on a real parameter $σ$. In this paper, we determine the Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable triples with $\mathrm{rk}(E_1)=\mathrm{rk}(E_2)=2$, using the theory of mixed Hodge structures (in the cases that they are smooth and compact). This gives in particular the Poincar{é} pol…
We give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ=δ$ for genus 1. We also compute the classes of certain strata in the Satake compactification as elements of the push down of the tautological ring.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. A holomorphic triple $(E_1,E_2,ϕ)$ on $X$ consists of two holomorphic vector bundles $E_1$ and $E_2$ over $X$ and a holomorphic map $ϕ:E_2 \to E_1$. There is a concept of stability for triples which depends on a real parameter $σ$. In this paper, we determine the Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable triples with $\rk(E_1)=3$, $\rk(E_2)=1$, using the theory of mixed Hodge structures. This gives in particular the Poincaré polynomials of these moduli spaces. As a byproduct, we recover the Hodge polyn…
In this note, we examine the Jacobian ring description of the Hodge structure of zero loci of vector bundle sections on a class of ambient varieties. We consider a set of cohomological vanishing conditions that imply such a description, and we verify these conditions for some new cases. We also observe that the method can be directly extended to log homogeneous varieties. We apply the Jacobian ring to study the null varieties of period integrals and their derivatives, generalizing a result in [9] for projective spaces. As an additional application, we prove the Hodge conjecture for very generi…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. Fix $n\geq 2$, and an integer $d$. A pair $(E,ϕ)$ over $X$ consists of an algebraic vector bundle $E$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $X$ and a section $ϕ$. There is a concept of stability for pairs which depends on a real parameter $τ$. Let $M_τ(n,d)$ be the moduli space of $τ$-semistable pairs of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $X$. We prove that the cohomology groups of $M_τ(n,d)$ are Hodge structures isomorphic to direct summands of tensor products of the Hodge structure $H^1(X)$. This implies a similar result f…
We study Hodge Integrals on Moduli Spaces of Admissible Covers. Motivation for this work comes from Bryan and Pandharipande's recent work on the local GW theory of curves, where analogouos intersection numbers, computed on Moduli Spaces of Relative Stable Maps, are the structure coefficients for a Topological Quantum Field Theory. Admissible Covers provide an alternative compactification of the Moduli Space of Maps, that is smooth and doesn't contain boundary components of excessive dimension. A parallel, yet different, TQFT, can then be constructed. In this paper we compute, using localizatio…
This paper contains two results on Hodge loci in the moduli space of curves. The first concerns fibrations over curves with a non-trivial flat part in the Fujita decomposition. If local Torelli theorem holds for the fibres and the fibration is non-trivial, an appropriate exterior power of the cohomology of the fiber admits a Hodge substructure. In the case of curves it follows that the moduli image of the fibers is contained in a proper Hodge locus. The second result deals with divisors in the moduli space of curves. It is proved that the image of a divisor in the moduli of principally polariz…
Let X be a nonsingular complex projective variety that is acted on by a reductive group $G$ and such that $X^{ss} \neq X_{(0)}^{s}\neq \emptyset$. We give formulae for the Hodge--Poincaré series of the quotient $X_{(0)}^s/G$. We use these computations to obtain the corresponding formulae for the Hodge--Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space of properly stable vector bundles when the rank and the degree are not coprime. We compute explicitly the case in which the rank equals 2 and the degree is even.
In this paper, we show that the mixed Hodge structures of character varieties are of Hodge--Tate type and that the mixed Hodge polynomials are independent of the choice of generic eigenvalues, which is a conjecture due to Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Moreover, we investigate the mixed Hodge structures of the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles and the moduli space of semistable regular singular parabolic connections. We show that the mixed Hodge structures of these moduli spaces are pure.
We bound from below the complexity of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle in the Chow ring of the moduli space of curves: no formulas in terms of classes of degrees 1 and 2 can exist. As a consequence of the Torelli map, the 0-section over the second Voronoi compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties also can not be expressed in terms of classes of degree 1 and 2. Along the way, we establish new cases of Pixton's conjecture for tautological relations. In the log Chow ring of the moduli space of curves, however, we prove that the top Chern class of the Hodge b…
This is a continuous work of our previous paper. In the previous work we showed a triviality of the torsors in the case where period domains are Hermitian symmetric and a non-triviality for one-example. In this paper we determine whether the torsors are trivial or not for any period domains for pure Hodge structures. We also show a generalization of a previous result which gives a non-triviality on some open sets connecting to cycle spaces.
We construct toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We construct them as the spaces of nilpotent orbits.
Given a cubic 4-fold $Y$, we provide an easy Hodge-theoretic proof of the following result of Iliev--Manivel: the relative intermediate Jacobian of the universal family of cubic 5-folds $Z$ extending $Y$ is a Lagrangian fibration.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve embedded in its Jacobian $J$ via an Abel-Jacobi map. We compute the scheme structure of the Hilbert scheme component of $\textrm{Hilb}_J$ containing the Abel-Jacobi curve as a point. We relate the result to the ramification (and to the fibres) of the Torelli morphism $\mathcal M_g\rightarrow \mathcal A_g$ along the hyperelliptic locus. As an application, we determine the scheme structure of the moduli space of Picard sheaves (introduced by Mukai) on a hyperelliptic Jacobian.
In this paper, it is proved that the Hodge metric completion of the moduli space of polarized and marked Calabi-Yau manifolds, i.e. the Torelli space, is a complex affine manifold. As applications we prove that the period map from the Torelli space and the extended period map from its completion space, both are injective into the period domain, and that the completion space is a bounded domain of holomorphy with a complete Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we show that the period map from the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds with level $m$ structure is also injective.
A well known result of Clemens and Griffiths says that a smooth cubic threefold can be recovered from its intermediate Jacobian. In this paper we discuss the possible degenerations of these abelian varieties, and thus give a description of the compactification of the moduli space of cubic threefolds obtained in this way. The relation between this compactification and those constructed in the work of Allcock-Carlson-Toledo and Looijenga-Swierstra is also considered, and is similar in spirit to the relation between the various compactifications of the moduli spaces of low genus curves.
We carry out a complete birational classification of the degree g universal Jacobian P_g over the moduli space of curves, highlighting the transition cases g=10, 11. The universal Jacobian is unirational when g<10, has Kodaira dimension zero for g=10 and Kodaira dimension 19 for g=11. For g>11, the variety P_g has Kodaira dimension 3g-3, that is, the maximum allowed by Iitaka's easy addition formula for fibre spaces. In particular, we disprove the expectation that P_g and M_g have the same Kodaira dimension for all genera.
Deligne has conjectured that certain mixed Hodge theoretic invariants of complex algebraic invariants are motivic. This conjecture specializes to an algebraic construction of the Jacobian for smooth projective curves, which was done by A. Weil. The conjecture (and one-motives) are motivated by means of Jacobians, generalized Jacobians of Rosenlicht, and Serre's generalized Albanese varieties. We discuss the connections with the Hodge and the generalized Hodge conjecture. We end with some applications to number theory by providing partial answers to questions of Serre, Katz and Jannsen.
A curve, that is, a connected, reduced, projective scheme of dimension 1 over an algebraically closed field, admits two types of compactifications of its (generalized) Jacobian: the moduli schemes of P-quasistable torsion-free, rank-1 sheaves and Seshadri's moduli schemes of S-equivalence classes of semistable torsion-free, rank-1 sheaves. Both are constructed with respect to a choice of polarization. The former are fine moduli spaces which were shown to be complete; here we show that they are actually projective. The latter are just coarse moduli spaces. Here we give a sufficient condition fo…
The intermediate Jacobian map, which associates to a smooth cubic threefold its intermediate Jacobian, does not extend to the GIT compactification of the space of cubic threefolds, not even as a map to the Satake compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian fivefolds. A much better "wonderful" compactification of the space of cubic threefolds was constructed by the first and fourth authors --- it has a modular interpretation, and divisorial normal crossing boundary. We prove that the intermediate Jacobian map extends to a morphism from the wonderful compactification to…
Given a family of intermediate Jacobians (for a polarized variation of Hodge structure of weight -1) on a Zariski-open subset of a complex manifold, we construct an analytic space that naturally extends the family. Its two main properties are: (a) the horizontal and holomorphic sections are precisely the admissible normal functions without singularities; (b) the graph of any admissible normal function has an analytic closure inside our space. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof for the zero locus conjecture of M. Green and P. Griffiths. The construction uses filtered D-modules and M. Saito…
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over $\mathbb C$. Fix $n\geq 1$, $d\in {\mathbb Z}$. A pair $(E,ϕ)$ over $C$ consists of an algebraic vector bundle $E$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $C$ and a section $ϕ\in H^0(E)$. There is a concept of stability for pairs which depends on a real parameter $τ$. Let ${\mathfrak M}_τ(n,d)$ be the moduli space of $τ$-polystable pairs of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $C$. Here we prove that for a generic curve $C$, the moduli space ${\mathfrak M}_τ(n,d)$ satisfies the Hodge Conjecture for $n \leq 4$. For obtaining this, we prove first that…
When $k<n$, we study the coherent systems that come from a BGN extension in which the quotient bundle is strictly semistable. In this case we describe a stratification of the moduli space of coherent systems. We also describe the strata as complements of determinantal varieties and we prove that these are irreducible and smooth. These descriptions allow us to compute the Hodge polynomials of this moduli space in some cases. In particular, we give explicit computations for the cases in which $(n,d,k)=(3,d,1)$ and $d$ is even, obtaining from them the usual Poincaré polynomials.
Hodge classes on the moduli space of admissible covers with monodromy group G are associated to irreducible representations of G. We evaluate all linear Hodge integrals over moduli spaces of admissible covers with abelian monodromy in terms of multiplication in an associated wreath group algebra. In case G is cyclic and the representation is faithful, the evaluation is in terms of double Hurwitz numbers. In case G is trivial, the formula specializes to the well-known result of Ekedahl-Lando-Shapiro-Vainshtein for linear Hodge integrals over the moduli space of curves in terms of single Hurwitz…
We compute some Hodge and Betti numbers of the moduli space of stable rank $r$ degree $d$ vector bundles on a smooth projective curve. We do not assume $r$ and $d$ are coprime. In the process we equip the cohomology of an arbitrary algebraic stack with a functorial mixed Hodge structure. This Hodge structure is computed in the case of the moduli stack of rank $r$, degree $d$ vector bundles on a curve. Our methods also yield a formula for the Poincare polynomial of the moduli stack that is valid over any ground field.
We compute the Hodge polynomials for the moduli space of representations of an elliptic curve with two marked points into SL(2,C). When we fix the conjugacy classes of the representations around the marked points to be diagonal and of modulus one, the character variety is diffeomorphic to the moduli space of strongly parabolic Higgs bundles, whose Betti numbers are known. In that case we can recover some of the Hodge numbers of the character variety. We extend this result to the moduli space of doubly periodic instantons.
Suppose that $K$ is a field of characteristic 0, $p$ is an odd prime, $r$ a positive integer, $q=p^r$ a prime power. Suppose that $f(x)$ is a polynomial of degree $n > 4$ with coefficients in $K$ and without multiple roots. Let us consider the superelliptic curve $C: y^q=f(x)$ and its jacobian $J(C)$. Assuming that $K$ is a subfield of the field of complex numbers, we study the (connected reductive algebraic) Hodge group $Hdg$ of the corresponding complex abelian variety $J(C)$. In our previous paper (arXiv:0907.1563 [math.AG]) we studied the center of $Hdg. In this paper we study the semisimp…
We complete the proof of the fact that the moduli space of rank two bundles with trivial determinant embeds into the linear system of divisors on $Pic^{g-1}C$ which are linearly equivalent to $2Θ$. The embedded tangent space at a semi-stable non-stable bundle $ξ\oplusξ^{-1}$, where $ξ$ is a degree zero line bundle, is shown to consist of those divisors in $|2Θ|$ which contain $Sing(Θ_ξ)$ where $Θ_ξ$ is the translate of $Θ$ by $ξ$. We also obtain geometrical results on the structure of this tangent space.
The aim of this note is to describe the restriction map from the moduli space of stable rank 2 bundle with small $c_2$ on a jacobian $X$ of dimension 2, to the moduli space of stable rank 2 bundles on the corresponding genus 2 curve $C$ embedded in $X$.
Refereed version to appear in Michigan Mathematical Journal. A mistake in the last section of the previous version has been corrected. The new title exactly describes the main result obtained. Building on the geometry of cubic surfaces and on a theorem of Dolgachev, the rationality of the moduli space R mentioned in the title is proved. Let M be the moduli space of 6 points in the plane, modulo the natural involution induced by double-six configurations on cubic surfaces. It is proved that R is birational to a tower of locally trivial projective bundles ending onto M. The rationality of R then…
We study an algebraic inequality for nilpotent matrices and show some interesting geometric applications: (i) obtaining topological information for nilpotent polystable Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface; (ii) obtaining a sharp upper bound of the holomorphic sectional curvatures of the period domain and the Hodge metric on the Calabi-Yau moduli.
For each universal genus-$g$ polarization $μ$ of degree $d$, we construct a universal tropical Jacobian $J_{μ,g}^{trop}$ as a generalized cone complex over the moduli space of stable pointed genus-$g$ tropical curves. We show several properties of the space $J_{μ,g}^{trop}$. In particular, we prove that the natural compactification of $J_{μ,g}^{trop}$ is the tropicalization of the Esteves' compactified universal Jacobian over the moduli space of stable pointed genus-$g$ curves.
We prove by means of the study of the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure and a generalization of the classical Babbage-Enriques-Petri theorem that the Jacobian variety of a generic element of a $k$ codimensional subvariety of $\mathcal M_g$ is not isogenous to a distinct Jacobian if $g>3k+4$. We extend this result to $k=1, g\ge 5$ by using degeneration methods.
