The goal is to verify the Hodge conjecture (and some related conjectures) for certain moduli spaces. It is shown that the (generalized) Hodge conjecture holds for the projective moduli spaces of vector bundles over an abelian or K3 surface or a curve if it holds for all powers of the surface or curve. In the latter case, the curve can be replaced by its Jacobian. As a consequence the generalized Hodge conjecture holds for these moduli spaces when the curve is very general. A similar result is proved for the Hilbert schemes of points over an arbitrary surface.
We announce the construction of toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We include an application to the analyticity of zero loci of some functions.
This is an expository article on the recent developments of Hodge theory on moduli spaces of smooth projective varieties with semi-ample canonical line bundles.
We define and construct the real analytic moduli stack of pluriharmonic bundles on a compact Kaehler manifold X, and show how this is equipped with Hodge and quaternionic structures. This stack maps to the de Rham moduli stack, giving rise to preferred sections of the Deligne-Hitchin twistor stack. We then show how the non-abelian mixed Hodge structures on Malcev homotopy types X can be extended to objects over the pluriharmonic moduli stack.
In this paper we will study the moduli spaces of log Hodge structures introduced by Kato-Usui. This moduli space is a partial compactification of a discrete quotient of a period domain. We treat the following 2 cases: (A) the case where the period domain is Hermitian symmetric, (B) the case where the Hodge structures are of the mirror quintic type. Especially we study a property of the torsor.
We give upper and lower bounds for the order of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties.
We give upper and lower bounds for the order of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. We also give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ_1=δ$ for genus 1.
In this article, we prove the Hodge conjecture for a desingularization of the moduli space of rank 2, semi-stable, torsion-free sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant over a very general irreducible nodal curve of genus at least 2. We also compute the algebraic Poincare polynomial of the associated cohomology ring.
In this paper we consider moduli spaces of coherent systems on an elliptic curve. We compute their Hodge polynomials and determine their birational types in some cases. Moreover we prove that certain moduli spaces of coherent systems are isomorphic. This last result uses the Fourier-Mukai transform of coherent systems introduced by Hernández Ruiperez and Tejero Prieto.
We study the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It was shown by Thaddeus and Hausel (in rank 2) and Markman (in general rank) that the rational cohomology ring of this space is generated by universal classes. In this paper, we use their results to compute the Hodge structure on the cohomology of this moduli space. We show that the natural Hodge structure on H^k is pure of weight k.
We investigate the Hodge structure of the singular O'Grady's six and ten dimensional examples of irreducible symplectic varieties. In particular, we compute some of their Betti numbers and their Euler characteristic. As consequence, we deduce that these varieties do not have finite quotient singularities answering a question of Bakker and Lehn.
Inductive formulas for the Betti numbers of the moduli spaces of stable holomorphic vector bundles of coprime rank and degree over a fixed Riemann surface of genus at least two were obtained by Harder, Narasimhan, Desale and Ramanan using number theoretic methods and the Weil conjectures and were rederived by Atiyah and Bott using gauge theory. In this note we observe that there are similar inductive formulas for determining the Hodge numbers of these moduli spaces.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. A holomorphic pair on $X$ is a couple $(E,ϕ)$, where $E$ is a holomorphic bundle over $X$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$, and $ϕ\in H^0(E)$ is a holomorphic section. In this paper, we determine the Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces of rank 2 pairs, using the theory of mixed Hodge structures. We also deal with the case in which $E$ has fixed determinant.
Around 1970 Griffiths introduced the moduli of polarized Hodge structures/the period domain $D$ and described a dream to enlarge $D$ to a moduli space of degenerating polarized Hodge structures. Since in general $D$ is not a Hermitian symmetric domain, he asked for the existence of a certain automorphic cohomology theory for $D$, generalizing the usual notion of automorphic forms on symmetric Hermitian domains. Since then there have been many efforts in the first part of Griffith's dream but the second part still lives in darkness. The objective of the present text is two-folded. First, we giv…
There is an isomorphism between the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable holomorphic triples and some of the critical submanifolds of the moduli space of $k$-Higgs bundles of rank three, whose elements $(E,φ^k)$ correspond to variations of Hodge structure, VHS. There are special embeddings on the moduli spaces of $k$-Higgs bundles of rank three. The main objective here is to study the cohomology of the critical submanifolds of such moduli spaces, extending those embeddings to moduli spaces of holomorphic triples.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. A holomorphic triple $(E_1,E_2,ϕ)$ on $X$ consists of two holomorphic vector bundles $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$ over $X$ and a holomorphic map $ϕ\colon E_{2} \to E_{1}$. There is a concept of stability for triples which depends on a real parameter $σ$. In this paper, we determine the Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable triples with $\mathrm{rk}(E_1)=\mathrm{rk}(E_2)=2$, using the theory of mixed Hodge structures (in the cases that they are smooth and compact). This gives in particular the Poincar{é} pol…
We give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ=δ$ for genus 1. We also compute the classes of certain strata in the Satake compactification as elements of the push down of the tautological ring.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. A holomorphic triple $(E_1,E_2,ϕ)$ on $X$ consists of two holomorphic vector bundles $E_1$ and $E_2$ over $X$ and a holomorphic map $ϕ:E_2 \to E_1$. There is a concept of stability for triples which depends on a real parameter $σ$. In this paper, we determine the Hodge polynomials of the moduli spaces of $σ$-stable triples with $\rk(E_1)=3$, $\rk(E_2)=1$, using the theory of mixed Hodge structures. This gives in particular the Poincaré polynomials of these moduli spaces. As a byproduct, we recover the Hodge polyn…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over the complex numbers. Fix $n\geq 2$, and an integer $d$. A pair $(E,ϕ)$ over $X$ consists of an algebraic vector bundle $E$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $X$ and a section $ϕ$. There is a concept of stability for pairs which depends on a real parameter $τ$. Let $M_τ(n,d)$ be the moduli space of $τ$-semistable pairs of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $X$. We prove that the cohomology groups of $M_τ(n,d)$ are Hodge structures isomorphic to direct summands of tensor products of the Hodge structure $H^1(X)$. This implies a similar result f…
We study Hodge Integrals on Moduli Spaces of Admissible Covers. Motivation for this work comes from Bryan and Pandharipande's recent work on the local GW theory of curves, where analogouos intersection numbers, computed on Moduli Spaces of Relative Stable Maps, are the structure coefficients for a Topological Quantum Field Theory. Admissible Covers provide an alternative compactification of the Moduli Space of Maps, that is smooth and doesn't contain boundary components of excessive dimension. A parallel, yet different, TQFT, can then be constructed. In this paper we compute, using localizatio…
This paper contains two results on Hodge loci in the moduli space of curves. The first concerns fibrations over curves with a non-trivial flat part in the Fujita decomposition. If local Torelli theorem holds for the fibres and the fibration is non-trivial, an appropriate exterior power of the cohomology of the fiber admits a Hodge substructure. In the case of curves it follows that the moduli image of the fibers is contained in a proper Hodge locus. The second result deals with divisors in the moduli space of curves. It is proved that the image of a divisor in the moduli of principally polariz…
Let X be a nonsingular complex projective variety that is acted on by a reductive group $G$ and such that $X^{ss} \neq X_{(0)}^{s}\neq \emptyset$. We give formulae for the Hodge--Poincaré series of the quotient $X_{(0)}^s/G$. We use these computations to obtain the corresponding formulae for the Hodge--Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space of properly stable vector bundles when the rank and the degree are not coprime. We compute explicitly the case in which the rank equals 2 and the degree is even.
In this paper, we show that the mixed Hodge structures of character varieties are of Hodge--Tate type and that the mixed Hodge polynomials are independent of the choice of generic eigenvalues, which is a conjecture due to Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Moreover, we investigate the mixed Hodge structures of the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles and the moduli space of semistable regular singular parabolic connections. We show that the mixed Hodge structures of these moduli spaces are pure.
We bound from below the complexity of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle in the Chow ring of the moduli space of curves: no formulas in terms of classes of degrees 1 and 2 can exist. As a consequence of the Torelli map, the 0-section over the second Voronoi compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties also can not be expressed in terms of classes of degree 1 and 2. Along the way, we establish new cases of Pixton's conjecture for tautological relations. In the log Chow ring of the moduli space of curves, however, we prove that the top Chern class of the Hodge b…
This is a continuous work of our previous paper. In the previous work we showed a triviality of the torsors in the case where period domains are Hermitian symmetric and a non-triviality for one-example. In this paper we determine whether the torsors are trivial or not for any period domains for pure Hodge structures. We also show a generalization of a previous result which gives a non-triviality on some open sets connecting to cycle spaces.
We construct toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We construct them as the spaces of nilpotent orbits.
In this paper, it is proved that the Hodge metric completion of the moduli space of polarized and marked Calabi-Yau manifolds, i.e. the Torelli space, is a complex affine manifold. As applications we prove that the period map from the Torelli space and the extended period map from its completion space, both are injective into the period domain, and that the completion space is a bounded domain of holomorphy with a complete Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we show that the period map from the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds with level $m$ structure is also injective.
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over $\mathbb C$. Fix $n\geq 1$, $d\in {\mathbb Z}$. A pair $(E,ϕ)$ over $C$ consists of an algebraic vector bundle $E$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $C$ and a section $ϕ\in H^0(E)$. There is a concept of stability for pairs which depends on a real parameter $τ$. Let ${\mathfrak M}_τ(n,d)$ be the moduli space of $τ$-polystable pairs of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $C$. Here we prove that for a generic curve $C$, the moduli space ${\mathfrak M}_τ(n,d)$ satisfies the Hodge Conjecture for $n \leq 4$. For obtaining this, we prove first that…
When $k<n$, we study the coherent systems that come from a BGN extension in which the quotient bundle is strictly semistable. In this case we describe a stratification of the moduli space of coherent systems. We also describe the strata as complements of determinantal varieties and we prove that these are irreducible and smooth. These descriptions allow us to compute the Hodge polynomials of this moduli space in some cases. In particular, we give explicit computations for the cases in which $(n,d,k)=(3,d,1)$ and $d$ is even, obtaining from them the usual Poincaré polynomials.
Hodge classes on the moduli space of admissible covers with monodromy group G are associated to irreducible representations of G. We evaluate all linear Hodge integrals over moduli spaces of admissible covers with abelian monodromy in terms of multiplication in an associated wreath group algebra. In case G is cyclic and the representation is faithful, the evaluation is in terms of double Hurwitz numbers. In case G is trivial, the formula specializes to the well-known result of Ekedahl-Lando-Shapiro-Vainshtein for linear Hodge integrals over the moduli space of curves in terms of single Hurwitz…
We compute some Hodge and Betti numbers of the moduli space of stable rank $r$ degree $d$ vector bundles on a smooth projective curve. We do not assume $r$ and $d$ are coprime. In the process we equip the cohomology of an arbitrary algebraic stack with a functorial mixed Hodge structure. This Hodge structure is computed in the case of the moduli stack of rank $r$, degree $d$ vector bundles on a curve. Our methods also yield a formula for the Poincare polynomial of the moduli stack that is valid over any ground field.
We study an analogue of the Noether-Lefschetz theorem in the context of Beilinson's Hodge conjecture. We estimate the dimension of the Noether-Lefschetz locus by the infinitesimal methods in Hodge theory.
In this paper, we prove that the statement: ``The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture holds for codimension-two cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$" is a birationally invariant statement, that is, if the statement is true for $X$, it is also true for all smooth varieties $X'$ which are birationally equivalent to $X$. We also prove the analogous result for 1-cycles. As direct corollaries, the Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to five, and, the Generalized Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimensi…
Please forget our result!! I would like to apologize that there are a fatal mistake in the proof of the algebraicity of Weil Hodge cycles. See contents for the reason. So please forget about the result of algebraicity.
The semi-simplicity of the Hodge group is proved for a simple Abelian variety with a stable reduction of odd toric (reductive) rank. If, besides, the dimension of the Abelian variety is an odd integer, then the Hodge conjecture on algebraic cycles holds for it.
Let SU_X(n,L) be the moduli space of rank n semistable vector bundles with fixed determinant L on a smooth projective genus g>1 curve X. Let SU_X^s(n,L) denote the open subset parameterizing stable bundles. We show that for small i, the mixed Hodge structure on H^i(SU_X^s(n, L), Q) is independent of the degree of L, and hence pure of weight i. Moreover any simple factors is, up to Tate twisting, isomorphic to a summand of a tensor power of H^1(X,Q). A more precise statement for i = 3, yields a Torelli theorem complementing earlier work of several authors. This is a replacement of our preprint …
The goal of this paper is to introduce Hodge 1-motives of algebraic varieties and to state a corresponding cohomological Grothendieck-Hodge conjecture, generalizing the classical Hodge conjecture to arbitrarily singular proper schemes.
In this paper we discuss an obstruction to the integral Hodge conjecture, which arises from certain behavior of vanishing cycles. This allows us to construct new counter-examples to the integral Hodge conjecture. One typical such counter-example is the product of a very general hypersurface of odd dimension and an Enriques surface. Our approach generalizes the degeneration argument of Benoist-Ottem.
We compute the Hodge polynomials for the moduli space of representations of an elliptic curve with two marked points into SL(2,C). When we fix the conjugacy classes of the representations around the marked points to be diagonal and of modulus one, the character variety is diffeomorphic to the moduli space of strongly parabolic Higgs bundles, whose Betti numbers are known. In that case we can recover some of the Hodge numbers of the character variety. We extend this result to the moduli space of doubly periodic instantons.
We study an algebraic inequality for nilpotent matrices and show some interesting geometric applications: (i) obtaining topological information for nilpotent polystable Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface; (ii) obtaining a sharp upper bound of the holomorphic sectional curvatures of the period domain and the Hodge metric on the Calabi-Yau moduli.
The main subject of study in this paper is the Noether-Lefschetz locus for Beilinson-Hodge cycles on the complement of the union of hyperplane sections in a surface in $\Bbb P^3$. We give an analogue of the result by M.Green and C.Voisin on the maximal components in the Noether-Lefschetz locus.
For a smooth, projective complex variety, we introduce several mixed Hodge structures associated to higher algebraic cycles. Most notably, we introduce a mixed Hodge structure for a pair of higher cycles which are in the refined normalized complex and intersect properly. In a special case, this mixed Hodge structure is an oriented biextension, and its height agrees with the higher archimedean height pairing introduced in a previous paper by the first two authors. We also compute a non-trivial example of this height given by Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm function. Finally we study the variation of m…
We show that the Hodge numbers of the moduli space of stable rank two sheaves with primitive determinant on a K3 surface coincide with the Hodge numbers of an appropriate Hilbert scheme of points on the K3 surface. The precise result is: Theorem: Let $X$ be a K3 surface, $L$ a primitive big and nef line bundle and $H$ a generic polarization. If the moduli space of rank two $H$ semi-stable torsion-free sheaves with determiant $L$ and second Chern class $c_2$ has at least dimension 10 then its Hodge numbers coincide with those of the Hilbert scheme of $l:=2c_2-\frac{L^2}{2}-3$ points on $X$.
This paper initiates a study of Hodge integrals on moduli spaces of pseudostable curves. We prove an explicit comparison formula that allows one to effectively compute any pseudostable Hodge integral in terms of intersection numbers on moduli spaces of stable curves, and we use this comparison to prove that pseudostable Hodge integrals are equal to their stable counterparts when they are linear in lambda classes, but not when they are nonlinear. This suggests that pseudostable Gromov-Witten invariants are equal to usual Gromov-Witten invariants for target curves, but not for higher-dimensional…
In this paper, we seek an appropriate definition for a Shimura curve of Hodge type in positive characteristics, i.e. a characterization of curves in positive characteristics which are reduction of Shimura curve over the complex field. Specifically, we study the liftablity of a curve in moduli space of principally polarized abelian fourfolds over k, char k=p. We show that some conditions on the crystalline Hodge cycles over such a curve imply that this curve can be lifted to a Shimura curve.
In this paper we study the second integral cohomology of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on projective K3 surfaces. If $S$ is a projective K3 surface, $v$ a Mukai vector and $H$ a $v-$generic polarization on $S$, we show that $H^{2}(M_{v},\mathbb{Z})$ is a free $\mathbb{Z}-$module of rank 23 carrying a pure weight-two Hodge structure and a lattice structure, with respect to which $H^{2}(M_{v},\mathbb{Z})$ is Hodge isometric to the Hodge sublattice $v^{\perp}$ of the Mukai lattice of $S$. Similar results are proved for Abelian surfaces.
In this paper, we give an expression and some estimates of the curvature tensor of the Hodge metric over the moduli space of a polarized Calabi-Yau threefold. The symmetricity of the Yukawa coupling is also studied. In the last section of this paper, an extra restriction of the limiting Hodge structure for the degeneration of Calabi-Yau threefolds is given.
We prove the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles on a principally polarized complex abelian variety whose minimal class is algebraic. In particular, any product of Jacobians of smooth projective curves over the complex numbers satisfies the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles. The main ingredient is a lift of the Fourier transform to integral Chow groups. Similarly, we prove the integral Tate conjecture for one-cycles on the Jacobian of a proper curve of compact type over the separable closure of a finitely generated field. Furthermore, abelian varieties satisfying such a conjecture …
It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in $\mathbb{P}^3$ does {\em not} have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is natura…
