Exact bounds for the positions of the branch points for cyclic coverings of the $p$-adic projective line by Mumford curves are calculated in two ways. Firstly, by using Fumiharu Kato's *-trees, and secondly by giving explicit matrix representations of the Schottky groups corresponding to the Mumford curves above the projective line through combinatorial group theory.
Moduli spaces for Galois covers of p-adic Mumford curves by Mumford curves are constructed using Herrlich's Teichmuller spaces, Andre's orbifold fundamental groups, and Kato's graphs of groups encoding ramification data of charts for Mumford orbifolds.
In this article we discuss a certain p-adic analogue of classical Schwarzian triangle groups, an analogue which is related to Mumford's uniformization of p-adic analytic curves. p-adic Schwarzian triangle groups are defined to be the Galois groups of analytic coverings over projective line with precisely 3 branch points. We say that a p-adic triangle group is of Mumford type if the corresponding universal covering is given by a certain locally compact analytic subspace in projective line, related to Mumford's uniformization. The main theorem provides a complete classification of p-adic triangl…
An origami (also known as square-tiled surface) is a Riemann surface covering a torus with at most one branch point. Lifting two generators of the fundamental group of the punctured torus decomposes the surface into finitely many unit squares. By varying the complex structure of the torus one obtains easily accessible examples of Teichmüller curves in the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. The p-adic analogues of Riemann surfaces are Mumford curves. A p-adic origami is defined as a covering of Mumford curves with at most one branch point, where the bottom curve has genus one. A classification o…
We study the rigid analytic geometry of cyclic coverings of the projective line. We determine the defining equation of a cyclic covering of degree $p$ of the projective line by a Mumford curve over a complete discrete valuation field of positive characteristic $p$. Previously, Bradley studied that of any degree over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero.
This paper is an attempt to give some general results on the tempered fundamental group of a $p$-adic smooth algebraic varieties (which is a sort of analog of the topologic fundamental group of complex algebraic varieties in the p-adic world). The main result asserts that one can recover the metric structure of the graph of the stable model of a Mumford curve from the tempered fundamental group of this Mumford curve. We will also prove birational invariance, invariance by algebraically closed extensions and a Kuenneth formula for the tempered fundamental group. We will describe the tempered fu…
We introduce stable tropical curves and use these to count covers of the $p$-adic projective line of fixed degree and ramification types by Mumford curves in terms of tropical Hurwitz numbers. Our counts depend on the branch loci of the covers.
Our results concern analytic functions on the open unit $p$-adic poly-disc in $\mathbb{C}^n_p$ centered at the multiplicative unit and we prove that such functions only vanish at finitely many $n$-tuples of roots of unity $(ζ_1-1,\ldots,ζ_n-1)$ unless they vanish along a translate of the formal multiplicative group. For polynomial functions, this follows from the multiplicative Manin-Mumford conjecture. However we allow for a much wider class of analytic functions; in particular we establish a rigidity result for formal tori. Moreover, our methods apply to Lubin-Tate formal groups beyond just …
We study the image of $\ell$-adic representations attached to subvarieties of Shimura varieties $Sh_K(G,X)$ that are not contained in a smaller Shimura subvariety and have no isotrivial components. We show that, for $\ell$ large enough (depending on the Shimura datum $(G,X)$ and the subvariety), such image contains the $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points coming from the simply connected cover of the derived subgroup of $G$. This can be regarded as a geometric version of the integral $\ell$-adic Mumford-Tate conjecture.
Mumford showed that Schottky subgroups of $PGL(2,K)$ give rise to certain curves, now called Mumford curves, over a non-Archimedean field K. Such curves are foundational to subjects dealing with non-Archimedean varieties, including Berkovich theory and tropical geometry. We develop and implement numerical algorithms for Mumford curves over the field of p-adic numbers. A crucial and difficult step is finding a good set of generators for a Schottky group, a problem solved in this paper. This result allows us to design and implement algorithms for tasks such as: approximating the period matrices …
We study the Newton polygon jumping locus of a Mumford family in char $p$. Our main result says that, under a mild assumption on $p$, the jumping locus consists of only supersingular points and its cardinality is equal to $(p^r-1)(g-1)$, where $r$ is the degree of the defining field of the base curve of a Mumford family in char $p$ and $g$ is the genus of the curve. The underlying technique is the $p$-adic Hodge theory.
This is a revised version of a part of the author's preprint "On p-adic uniformization of fake projective planes" (preprint, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Mathematik, 1998 (121)). In this paper we construct explicitly a Shimura surface of PEL-type, associated to a certain unitary group, whose connected components are isomorphic to Mumford's fake projective plane. We also give the canonical model, Shimura field and number of connected components of this Shimura surface. As a consequence of the construction we prove that the Mumford's fake projective plane is an arithmetic complex unit-ball quotient,…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, and $G_0$ be a Barsotti-Tate group (or $p$-divisible group) over k. We denote by $S$ the "algebraic" local moduli in characteristic p of $G_0$, by $G$ the universal deformation of $G_0$ over $S$, and by $U\subset S$ the ordinary locus of $G$. The etale part of $G$ over $U$ gives rise to a monodromy representation $ρ$ of the fundamental group of $U$ on the Tate module of $G$. Motivated by a famous theorem of Igusa, we prove in this article that $ρ$ is surjective if $G_0$ is connected and HW-cyclic. This latter condition is equivale…
Let A be a complex abelian variety and G its Mumford--Tate group. Supposing that the simple abelian subvarieties of A are pairwise non-isogenous, we find a lower bound for the rank of G, which is a little less than log_2 dim A. If we suppose that End A is commutative, then we show that rk G >= log_2 dim A + 2, and this latter bound is sharp. We also obtain the same results for the rank of the l-adic monodromy group of an abelian variety defined over a number field. ----- Soit A une variété abélienne complexe et G son groupe de Mumford--Tate. En supposant que les sous variétés abéliennes simple…
In this paper we study division algebras over the function fields of curves over $\Q_p$. The first and main tool is to view these fields as function fields over nonsingular $S$ which are projective of relative dimension 1 over the $p$ adic ring $\Z_p$. A previous paper showed such division algebras had index bounded by $n^2$ assuming the exponent was $n$ and $n$ was prime to $p$. In this paper we consider algebras of degree (and hence exponent) $q \not= p$ and show these algebras are cyclic. We also find a geometric criterion for a Brauer class to have index $q$.
This paper is originally designed as a part of revision of the author's preprint math.AG/9908174 "P-adic Schwarzian triangle groups of Mumford type". Recently, Yves Andr'e pointed out a flaw in that preprint; more precisely, Proposition II there was not correct, and consequently, as he pointed out, some triangle groups are missing (but only in p=2,3,5). I apologize to the readers, and will release the other part soon by the original title. In this paper, we concentrate on the constructive part, but more systematically and in more general situation. More precisely, this paper presents a complet…
Let $F$ be the function field of a smooth curve over the $p$-adic number field $\Q_p$. We show that for each prime-to-$p$ number $n$ the $n$-torsion subgroup $\H^2(F,μ_n)={}_n\Br(F)$ is generated by $\Z/n$-cyclic classes; in fact the $\Z/n$-length is equal to two. It follows that the Brauer dimension of $F$ is two (first proved in \cite{Sa97}), and any $F$-division algebra of period $n$ and index $n^2$ is decomposable.
We study the ramification of fierce cyclic Galois extensions of a local field $K$ of characteristic zero with a one-dimensional residue field of characteristic $p>0$. Using Kato's theory of the refined Swan conductor, we associate to such an extension a ramification datum, consisting of a sequence of pairs $(δ_i,ω_i)$, where $δ_i$ is a positive rational number and $ω_i$ a differential form on the residue field of $K$. Our main result gives necessary and sufficient conditions on such sequences to occur as a ramification datum of a fierce cyclic extension of $K$.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over a $p$-adic field or number field $K$, and let $V$ be a $K$-linear faithful representation of $G$. A lattice $Λ$ in the vector space $V$ defines a model $\hat{G}_Λ$ of $G$ over $\mathscr{O}_K$. One may wonder to what extent $Λ$ is determined by the group scheme $\hat{G}_Λ$. In this paper we prove that up to a natural equivalence relation on the set of lattices there are only finitely many $Λ$ corresponding to one model $\hat{G}_Λ$. Furthermore, we relate this fact to moduli spaces of abelian varieties as follows: let $\mathscr{A}_{g,n}$ be the moduli …
Stratifications and iterative differential equations are analogues in positive characteristic of complex linear differential equations. There are few explicit examples of stratifications. The main goal of this paper is to construct stratifications on projective or affine curves in positive characteristic and to determine the possibilities for their differential Galois groups. For the related "differential Abhyankar conjecture" we present partial answers, supplementing the literature. The tools for the construction of regular singular stratifications and the study of their differential Galois g…
In this article we give a new proof of Ngô's Geometric Stabilisation Theorem, which implies the Fundamental Lemma. This is a statement which relates the cohomology of Hitchin fibres for a quasi-split reductive group scheme $G$ to the cohomology of Hitchin fibres for the endoscopy groups $H_κ$. Our proof avoids the Decomposition and Support Theorem, instead the argument is based on results for $p$-adic integration on coarse moduli spaces of Deligne-Mumford stacks. Along the way we establish a description of the inertia stack of the (anisotropic) moduli stack of $G$-Higgs bundles in terms of end…
The tempered fundamental group of a p-adic analytic variety classifies étale coverings that become topological coverings (for the Berkovich topology) after finite étale base change. I study what can be recovered from the tempered fundamental group. In particular, I prove that, for a Mumford curve, one can recover the metric of the graph of the stable reduction from the tempered fundamental group. I also study how the tempered fundamental group behaves along the fibers of a fibration.
We show that for an associative algebra A and its ideal I such that the I-adic topology on A coincides with the p-adic topology, the relative continuous K-theory pro-spectrum "lim"K(A_i, IA_i), where A_i :=A/p^i A, is naturally isogenous to the cyclic chain pro-complex "lim"CC(A_i) (subject to minor conditions on A). This identification is a continuous version of the classical Goodwillie isomorphism. The work comes from an attempt to understand the article of Bloch, Esnault, and Kerz "p-adic deformations of algebraic cycle classes".
We investigate generalizations along the lines of the Mordell--Lang conjecture of the author's $p$-adic formal Manin--Mumford results for $n$-dimensional $p$-divisible formal groups $\mathcal{F}$. In particular, given a finitely generated subgroup $Γ$ of $\mathcal{F}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p)$ and a closed subscheme $X\hookrightarrow \mathcal{F}$, we show under suitable assumptions that for any points $P\in X(\mathbb{C}_p)$ satisfying $nP\inΓ$ for some $n\in\mathbb{N}$, the minimal such orders $n$ are uniformly bounded whenever $X$ does not contain a formal subgroup translate of positive dimens…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of order $q=p^h$ with $p>2$ prime and $h>1$, and let $\mathbb{F}_{\bar{q}}$ be a subfield of $\mathbb{F}_q$. From any two $\bar{q}$-linearized polynomials $L_1,L_2 \in \overline{\mathbb{F}}_q[T]$ of degree $q$, we construct an ordinary curve $\mathcal{X}_{(L_1,L_2)}$ of genus $(q-1)^2$ which is a generalized Artin-Schreier cover of the projective line $\mathbb{P}^1$. The automorphism group of $\mathcal{X}_{(L_1,L_2)}$ over the algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$ contains a semidirect product $Σ\rtimes Γ$ of an elementary abelian …
Using topological cyclic homology, we give a refinement of Beilinson's $p$-adic Goodwillie isomorphism between relative continuous $K$-theory and cyclic homology. As a result, we generalize results of Bloch-Esnault-Kerz and Beilinson on the $p$-adic deformations of $K$-theory classes. Furthermore, we prove structural results for the Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze filtration on $TC$ and identify the graded pieces with the syntomic cohomology of Fontaine-Messing.
A generalized Tate curve is a universal family of curves with fixed genus and degeneration data which becomes Schottky uniformized Riemann surfaces and Mumford curves by specializing moduli and deformation parameters. By considering each generalized Tate curve as a family of degenerating Riemann surfaces, we give explicit formulas of the period isomorphism between its de Rham and Betti cohomology groups, and of the associated objects: Gauss-Manin connection, variation of Hodge structure and monodromy weight filtration. A remarkable fact is that similar formulas hold also for families of Mumfor…
The modular envelope of a cyclic operad is the smallest modular operad containing it. A modular operad is constructed from moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with boundary; this modular operad is shown to be the modular envelope of the A-infinity cyclic operad. This gives a new proof of the result of Harer-Mumford-Thurston-Penner-Kontsevich that a cell complex built from ribbon graphs is homotopy equivalent to the moduli space of curves.
We compute the étale cohomology groups H^i(X,G_m) in several cases, where X is a smooth tame Deligne-Mumford stack of dimension 1 over an algebraically closed field. We have complete results for orbicurves (and, more generally, for twisted nodal curves) and in the case all stabilizers are cyclic; we give some partial results and examples in the general case. In particular we show that if the stabilizers are abelian then H^2(X, G_m) does not depend on X but only on the underlying orbicurve and on the generic stabilizer.
Anderson introduced a $p$-adic version of soliton theory. He then applied it to the Jacobian variety of a cyclic quotient of a Fermat curve and showed that torsion points of certain prime order lay outside of the theta divisor. In this paper, we evolve his theory further. As an application, we get a stronger result on the intersection of the theta divisor and torsion points on the Jacobian variety for more general curves. New examples are discussed as well. A key new ingredient is a map connecting the $p$-adic loop group and the formal group.
The purpose of this article is to prove a "Newton over Hodge" result for finite characters on curves. Let $X$ be a smooth proper curve over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p\geq 3$ and let $V \subset X$ be an affine curve. Consider a nontrivial finite character $ρ:π_1^{et}(V) \to \mathbb{C}^\times$. In this article, we prove a lower bound on the Newton polygon of the $L$-function $L(ρ,s)$. The estimate depends on monodromy invariants of $ρ$: the Swan conductor and the local exponents. Under certain nondegeneracy assumptions this lower bound agrees with the irregular Hodge filt…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic $p>0$ and $C \to {\mathbb P}^1_k$ a $p$-cyclic cover of the projective line ramified in exactly one point. We are interested in the $p$-part of the full automorphism group $Aut_k C$. First we prove that these groups are exactly the extra-special $p$-groups and groups G which are subgroups of an extra-special group E such that $Z(E) \subseteq G$. The paper also describes an efficient algorithm to compute the $p$-part of $\Aut_k C$ starting from an Artin-Schreier equation for the cover $C \to {\mathbb P}^1_k$. The interest for t…
We study finite groups of automorphisms of the $p$-adic open disk. In particular, we generalize results of Green, Matignon and Henrio from cyclic groups of order $p$ to arbitrary finite groups. As an application, we produce a counterexample to a question of Chinburg, Guralnick and Harbater, concerning the local lifting problem for generalized quaternion groups.
