We study finite groups of automorphisms of the $p$-adic open disk. In particular, we generalize results of Green, Matignon and Henrio from cyclic groups of order $p$ to arbitrary finite groups. As an application, we produce a counterexample to a question of Chinburg, Guralnick and Harbater, concerning the local lifting problem for generalized quaternion groups.

Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring of equal characteristic $p>0$. We investigate the Hurwitz action of the braid group Br_n on the n-fold Cartesian product of Br_3 and determine some stabilisers of its Artin systems. Our algebraic result is complemented by a geometric study of families of plane polynomial coverings of degree 3. We study the components of the Hurwitz scheme of ramified coverings of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with monodromy given by the alternating group $A_6$ and elements in the conjugacy class of product of two disjoint cycles. In order to detect the connected components of the Hurwitz scheme, inspired by the case of the spin structures studied by Fried for the $3$-cycles, we use as invariant the lifting to the Valentiner group, triple covering of $A_6$. We prove a lifting theorem for odd Frattini covers of finite groups. Using this, we characterize solvable groups and more generally p-solvable groups in terms of containing a triple of elements of distinct prime power orders with product 1. This is also related to various questions about Fried's modular tower program and properties of Hurwitz spaces of covers of curves.

In this paper we prove several lifting theorems for morphisms of tropical curves. We interpret the obstruction to lifting a finite harmonic morphism of augmented metric graphs to a morphism of algebraic curves as the non-vanishing of certain Hurwitz numbers, and we give various conditions under which this obstruction does vanish.
