This note is devoted to the study of the links between the Hilbert function of a subscheme X of the projective space, and its geometric properties. We will assume that X is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, which allows us to characterize its Hilbert function by a d integers, where d is the degree of X. We study in this context the geometric description of special linear systems of dimension maximal with respect to their degree on projective Gorenstein curves.
Closed subschemes in projective space with a fixed Hilbert polynomial are parametrized by a Hilbert scheme. We classify the smooth ones. We identify numerical conditions on a polynomial that completely determine when the Hilbert scheme is smooth. We also reinterpret these smooth Hilbert schemes as generalized partial flag varieties and describe the subschemes being parametrized.
We compare and contrast results of E. Davis, of A. Bigatti, A.V. Geramita and the author, and of J. Ahn and the author. The underlying idea is that certain numerical conditions on the Hilbert function of a finite set of points in projective space force geometric consequences on the base loci of the linear systems of hypersurfaces containing the points. When the points have uniform position, this tends to force better behavior for these base loci. However, unexpected behavior is still possible, and we give examples.
We discuss the parabolic Hilbert scheme of points on smooth surface, which is an interesting generalization of Hilbert scheme of points on surface. Some of the studies by Ellingsrud-Stromme, Goettsche, Cheah, Nakajima and Grojnowski can be generalized in our parabolic case.
We classify minimal-degree curves in the Hilbert schemes of points on algebraic surfaces. When the algebraic surface is the projective plane, the nef cone and a flip structure of these Hilbert schemes are determined.
In this paper, we give three bases for the cohomology groups of the Hilbert scheme of two points on projective space. Then, we use these bases to compute all effective and nef cones of higher codimensional cycles on the Hilbert scheme. Next, we compute the class in one of these bases of the Chern classes of tautological bundles coming from line bundles. Finally, we provide an application of these results to the degrees of secant varieties of complete intersections.
We classify all Gieseker semi-stable sheaves on the complex projective plane that have dimension 1, multiplicity 6 and Euler characteristic 3. We show that their moduli space is birational to the blow-up at a special point of a certain moduli space of semi-stable Kronecker modules.
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension, via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We work out the action of the blowup or 'discriminant' polarization on some natural cycles in the Hilbert scheme, including generalized diagonals and cycles, called 'node scrolls', parametrizing schemes supported on singular points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautologic…
The purpose of this paper is to explore the geometry and establish the slope stability of tautological vector bundles on Hilbert schemes of points on smooth surfaces. By establishing stability in general we complete a series of results of Schlickewei and Wandel who proved the slope stability of these vector bundles for Hilbert schemes of 2 points or 3 points on K3 or abelian surfaces with Picard group restrictions. In exploring the geometry we show that every sufficiently positive semistable vector bundle on a smooth curve arises as the restriction of a tautological vector bundle on the Hilber…
We represent algebraic curves via commuting matrix polynomials. This allows us to show that the Hilbert scheme of cohomologically stable twisted rational curves of degree $d$ in ${\Bbb P}^3\backslash {\Bbb P}^1$ is isomorphic to a complexified hyperkähler quotient of an open subset of a vector space by a non-reductive Lie group.
The polynomial method has been used recently to obtain many striking results in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we use affine Hilbert functions to obtain an estimation theorem in finite field geometry. The most natural way to state the theorem is via a sort of bounded degree Zariski closure operation: given a set, we consider all polynomials of some bounded degree vanishing on that set, and then the common zeros of these polynomials. For example, the degree d closure of d + 1 points on a line will contain the whole line, as any polynomial of degree at most d vanishing on the d + 1 point…
We obtain new results on the geometry of Hilbert modular varieties in positive characteristic and morphisms between them. Using these results and methods of rigid geometry, we develop a theory of canonical subgroups for abelian varieties with real multiplication.
We develop the theory of resolvent degree, introduced by Brauer \cite{Br} in order to study the complexity of formulas for roots of polynomials and to give a precise formulation of Hilbert's 13th Problem. We extend the context of this theory to enumerative problems in algebraic geometry, and consider it as an intrinsic invariant of a finite group. As one application of this point of view, we prove that Hilbert's 13th Problem, and his Sextic and Octic Conjectures, are equivalent to various enumerative geometry problems, for example problems of finding lines on a smooth cubic surface or bitangen…
Suppose that a Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface S of Picard rank one admits a rational Lagrangian fibration. We show that if the degree of the surface is sufficiently large compared to the number of points, then the Hilbert scheme is the unique hyperkähler manifold in its birational class. In particular, the Hilbert scheme is a Lagrangian fibration itself, which we realize as coming from a (twisted) Beauville-Mukai system on a Fourier-Mukai partner of S. We also show that when the degree of the surface is small our method can be used to find all birational models of the Hilbert scheme.
This is an expository account of Grothendieck's construction of Hilbert and Quot Schemes, following his talk `Techniques de construction et theoremes d'existence en geometrie algebriques IV : les schemas de Hilbert', Seminaire Bourbaki 221 (1960/61), together with further developments by Mumford and by Altman and Kleiman. Hilbert and Quot schemes are fundamental to modern Algebraic Geometry, in particular, for deformation theory and moduli constructions. These notes are based on a series of six lectures in the summer school `Advanced Basic Algebraic Geometry', held at the Abdus Salam Internati…
Given a strict simple degeneration $f \colon X\to C$ the first three authors previously constructed a degeneration $I^n_{X/C} \to C$ of the relative degree $n$ Hilbert scheme of $0$-dimensional subschemes. In this paper we investigate the geometry of this degeneration, in particular when the fibre dimension of $f$ is at most $2$. In this case we show that $I^n_{X/C} \to C$ is a dlt model. This is even a good minimal dlt model if $f \colon X \to C$ has this property. We compute the dual complex of the central fibre $(I^n_{X/C})_0$ and relate this to the essential skeleton of the generic fibre. …
For an Abelian surface $A$ with a symplectic action by a finite group $G$, one can define the partition function for $G$-invariant Hilbert schemes \[Z_{A, G}(q) = \sum_{d=0}^{\infty} e(\text{Hilb}^{d}(A)^{G})q^{d}.\] We prove the reciprocal $Z_{A,G}^{-1}$ is a modular form of weight $\frac{1}{2}e(A/G)$ for the congruence subgroup $Γ_{0}(|G|)$, and give explicit expressions in terms of eta products. Refined formulas for the $χ_{y}$-genera of $\text{Hilb}(A)^{G}$ are also given. For the group generated by the standard involution $τ: A \to A$, our formulas arise from the enumerative geometry of t…
We study the birational geometry of deformations of Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane P2. We complete the picture in the paper of Daniele Arcara, Aaron Bertram, Izzet Coskun and Jack Huizenga by giving an explicit correspondence between the stable base locus walls on the Neron-Severi space and the actual walls on the Bridgeland stability space. We show that the birational geometry of a deformed Hilb P2 is different from that of Hilb P2.
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautological bundles on the relative Hilbert scheme, which has applications to enumerative geometry.
In this paper, we show that the family of moduli spaces of $\balpha'$-stable $(\bt, \blambda)$-parabolic $ϕ$-connections of rank 2 over $\BP^1$ with 4-regular singular points and the fixed determinant bundle of degree -1 is isomorphic to the family of Okamoto--Painlevé pairs introduced by Okamoto \cite{O1} and \cite{STT02}. We also discuss about the generalization of our theory to the case where the rank of the connections and genus of the base curve are arbitrary. Defining isomonodromic flows on the family of moduli space of stable parabolic connections via the Riemann-Hilbert correspondences…
This is the first in a series of papers about foliations in derived geometry. After introducing derived foliations on arbitrary derived stacks, we concentrate on quasi-smooth and rigid derived foliations on smooth complex algebraic varieties and on their associated formal and analytic versions. Their truncations are classical singular foliations. We prove that a quasi-smooth rigid derived foliation on a smooth complex variety $X$ is formally integrable at any point, and, if we suppose that its singular locus has codimension $\geq 2$, then the truncation of its analytification is a locally inte…
We study the birational geometry of Hilbert schemes of points on non-minimal surfaces. In particular, we study the weak Lefschetz Principle in the context of birational geometry. We focus on the interaction of the stable base locus decomposition (SBLD) of the cones of effective divisors of $X^{[n]}$ and $Y^{[n]}$, when there is a birational morphism $f:X\rightarrow Y$ between surfaces. In this setting, $N^1(Y^{[n]})$ embeds in $N^1(X^{[n]})$, and we ask if the restriction of the stable base locus decomposition of $N^1(X^{[n]})$ yields the respective decomposition in $N^1(Y^{[n]})$ $i.e.$, if t…
By using the $\mathbb R$-filtration approach of Arakelov geometry, one establishes explicit upper bounds for geometric and arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel function for line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic projective varieties.
We present an Arakelov theoretic version of the deformation to the normal cone. In particular, the geometric data is enriched with a deformation of a Hermitian line bundle. We introduce numerical invariants called arithmetic Hilbert invariants and prove the conservation of these invariants along the deformation. In a following article, this conservation of number theorem will allow a demonstration of the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem.
We establish a precise relation between Galois theory in its motivic form with the mathematical theory of perturbative renormalization (in the minimal subtraction scheme with dimensional regularization). We identify, through a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence based on the Birkhoff decomposition and the t'Hooft relations, a universal symmetry group (the "cosmic Galois group" suggested by Cartier), which contains the renormalization group and acts on the set of physical theories. This group is closely related to motivic Galois theory. We construct a universal singular frame of geometric nature, in…
We study the geometry underlying the difference between non-negative polynomials and sums of squares. The hypersurfaces that discriminate these two cones for ternary sextics and quaternary quartics are shown to be Noether-Lefschetz loci of K3 surfaces. The projective duals of these hypersurfaces are defined by rank constraints on Hankel matrices. We compute their degrees using numerical algebraic geometry, thereby verifying results due to Maulik and Pandharipande. The non-SOS extreme rays of the two cones of non-negative forms are parametrized respectively by the Severi variety of plane ration…
We establish, in the setting of Arakelov geometry over adelic curves, an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem describing the asymptotic behaviour of the metrized graded linear series of an adelic line bundle in terms of its arithmetic intersection number. We then study positivity conditions of adelic line bundles.
Let $S$ be a smooth projective surface with $p_g=q=0$. We show how to use derived categorical methods to study the geometry of certain special iterated Hilbert schemes associated to $S$ by showing that they contain a smooth connected component isomorphic to $S$.
Let $X$ be the projective plane, a Hirzebruch surface, or a general $K3$ surface. In this paper, we study the birational geometry of various nested Hilbert schemes of points parameterizing pairs of zero-dimensional subschemes on $X$. We calculate the nef cone for two types of nested Hilbert schemes: $X^{[n+1,n]}$ and universal families. As an application, we recover a theorem of Butler on syzygies on Hirzebruch surfaces.

We show how well known tools of algebraic geometry for the study of finite sets can be fruitfully applied to the study of Waring decompositions of symmetric tensors (forms). We mainly focus on the uniqueness of a given decomposition (the identifiability problem), and show how, in some cases, one can effectively determine the uniqueness even in some range in which the Kruskal's criterion does not apply.
In this paper, we will give a complete geometric background for the geometry of Painlevé $VI$ and Garnier equations. By geometric invariant theory, we will construct a smooth coarse moduli space $M_n^{\balpha}(\bt, \blambda, L) $ of stable parabolic connection on $\BP^1$ with logarithmic poles at $D(\bt) = t_1 + ... + t_n$ as well as its natural compactification. Moreover the moduli space $\cR(\cP_{n, \bt})_{\ba}$ of Jordan equivalence classes of $SL_2(\C)$-representations of the fundamental group $π_1(\BP^1 \setminus D(\bt),\ast)$ are defined as the categorical quotient. We define the Riemann…
