Göttsche and Soergel gave formulas for the Hodge numbers of Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth algebraic surface and the Hodge numbers of generalized Kummer varieties. When a smooth projective surface $S$ admits an action by a finite group $G$, we describe the action of $G$ on the Hodge pieces via point counting. Each element of $G$ gives a trace on $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\sum_{i=0}^{\infty}(-1)^{i}H^{i}(S^{[n]},\mathbb{C})q^{n}$. In the case that $S$ is a K3 surface or an abelian surface, the resulting generating functions give some interesting modular forms when $G$ acts faithfully and symplectically on $S$.
We study Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of abelian varieties of arbitrary dimension. Over a number field we show that the subgroup of odd order elements of the Brauer group does not obstruct the Hasse principle. Sufficient conditions for the triviality of the Brauer group are given, which allow us to give an example of a Kummer K3 surface of geometric Picard rank 17 over the rationals with trivial Brauer group. We establish the non-emptyness of the Brauer--Manin set of everywhere locally soluble Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of products of hyperelliptic Jacobians with larg…
We explicitly construct the Kummer variety associated to the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 that is defined over a field of characteristic not equal to 2 and has a Weierstraß point defined over the same field. We also construct homogeneous quartic polynomials on the Kummer variety and show that they represent the duplication map.
Let $k$ be a number field. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for Kummer varieties over $k$. For example, for any Kummer variety $X$ over $k$, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the ($2$-primary) Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for zero-cycles of any given odd degree on $X$ over $k$. We also obtain similar results for pr…
In characteristic $p=2$, we compute the singularities of Kummer varieties arising from products of elliptic curves. This result is generalized to Kummer varieties associated to ordinary abelian varieties.
For a very general product $A$ of seven or more elliptic curves, every rational curve on the Kummer variety of $A$ projects trivially onto the Kummer variety of at least one of its factors. As a consequence, a very general member of certain families of abelian varieties parametrized by connected Shimura varieties of unitary type has the property that its Kummer variety has no rational curves.
We define Enriques varieties as a higher dimensional generalization of Enriques surfaces and construct examples by using fixed point free automorphisms on generalized Kummer varieties. We also classify all automorphisms of generalized Kummer varieties that come from an automorphism of the underlying abelian surface.
Let $k$ be a number field, let $X$ be a Kummer variety over $k$, and let $δ$ be an odd integer. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for $X$. For example, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the $2$-primary Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of a zero-cycle of degree $δ$ on $X$ over $k$.
Two abelian varieties $A_1, A_2$ over a number field $K$ are called strongly iso-Kummerian if the torsion fields $K(A_1[d])$ and $K(A_2[d])$ coincide for all $d \geq 1$. For all $g \geq 4$ we construct geometrically simple, strongly iso-Kummerian $g$-dimensional abelian varieties over number fields that are not geometrically isogenous. We also discuss related examples and put significant constraints on any further iso-Kummerian pair.
In this article, we construct new derived autoequivalences of generalised Kummer varieties. Together with Huybrechts-Thomas twists around $\mathbb{P}^n$-objects, these are the only known examples of such symmetries.
Borisov and Libgober recently proved a conjecture of Dijkgraaf, Moore, Verlinde, and Verlinde on the elliptic genus of a Hilbert scheme of points on a surface. We show how their result can be used together with our work on complex genera of generalised Kummer varieties to deduce a formula for the elliptic genus of a generalised Kummer variety.
We prove that if two abelian varieties have equivalent derived categories then the derived categories of the smooth stacks associated to the corresponding Kummer varieties are equivalent as well. The second main result establishes necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of equivalences between the twisted derived categories of two Kummer surfaces in terms of Hodge isometries between the generalized transcendental lattices of the corresponding abelian surfaces.
In their paper Livné and Yui (math.AG/0304497) discuss several examples of non-rigid Calabi-Yau varieties which admit semi-stable K3-fibrations with 6 singular fibres over a base which is a rational modular curve. They also establish the modularity of the L-function of these examples. The purpose of this note is to point out that the examples which were listed in their paper, but which do not lead to semi-stable fibrations, are still modular in the sense that their L-function is associated to modular forms. We treat the case associated to the group Gamma_1(7) in detail, but our technique also …
The main result of this note is a hard Lefschetz theorem for the Chow groups of generalized Kummer varieties. The same argument also proves hard Lefschetz for Chow groups of Hilbert schemes of abelian surfaces. As a consequence, we obtain new information about certain pieces of the Chow groups of generalized Kummer varieties, and Hilbert schemes of abelian surfaces. The proofs are based on work of Shen-Vial and Fu-Tian-Vial on multiplicative Chow-Künneth decompositions.
Results on stability of tautological sheaves on Hilbert schemes of points are extended to higher dimensions and transferred to abelian surfaces and to the restriction of tautological sheaves to generalised Kummer varieties. This provides a big class of new examples of stable sheaves on higher dimensional irreducible symplectic manifolds. Some aspects of deformations of tautological sheaves are studied.
By showing a structural result on how the Rozansky-Witten invariants of Hilbert schemes of points on a K3 surface and the Generalised Kummer varieties depend on the dimension, we give a method how to compute a large class of Rozansky-Witten invariants in terms of Chern numbers.
We investigate the existence of Lagrangian fibrations on the generalized Kummer varieties of Beauville. For a principally polarized abelian surface A of Picard number one we find the following: The Kummer variety K^n(A) is birationally equivalent to another irreducible symplectic variety admitting a Lagrangian fibration, if and only if n is a perfect square. And this is the case if and only if K^n(A) carries a divisor with vanishing Beauville-Bogomolov square.
In this paper, we investigate the construction of two moduli stacks of Kummer varieties. The first one is the stack $\mathcal K^{\text{abs}}_g$ of abstract Kummer varieties and the second one is the stack $\mathcal K^{\text{em}}_g$ of embedded Kummer varieties. We will prove that $\mathcal K^{\text{abs}}_g$ is a Deligne-Mumford stack and its coarse moduli space is isomorphic to $\boldsymbol A_g$, the coarse moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$. On the other hand we give a modular family $\mathcal W_g\to U$ of embedded Kummer varieties embedded in $\mathbb P^…
In this note we characterize polarized parallel transport operators on irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties which are deformations of generalized Kummer varieties. We then apply such characterization to show the existence of ample uniruled divisors on these varieties and derive some interesting consequences on their Chow group of 0-cycles.
A powerful method pioneered by Swinnerton-Dyer allows one to study rational points on pencils of curves of genus 1 by combining the fibration method with a sophisticated form of descent. A variant of this method, first used by Skorobogatov and Swinnerton-Dyer in 2005, can be applied to study rational points on Kummer varieties. In this paper we extend the method to include an additional step of second descent. Assuming finiteness of the relevant Tate-Shafarevich groups, we use the extended method to show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle on Kummer…
Inspired by their results on the Chow rings of projective K3 surfaces, Beauville and Voisin made the following conjecture: given a projective hyperkaehler manifold, for any algebraic cycle which is a polynomial with rational coefficients of Chern classes of the tangent bundle and line bundles, it is rationally equivalent to zero if and only if it is numerically equivalent to zero. In this paper, we prove the Beauville-Voisin conjecture for generalized Kummer varieties.
We apply the Yau-Zaslow-Beauville method to compute the Euler characteristic of the generalized Kummer varieties attached to a complex abelian surface (a calculation also done by Goettsche and Soergel by different methods). It is related to the number of genus 2 curves on an abelian surface.
Let $A^{[[n]]}$ denote the $2(n - 1)$-dimensional generalised Kummer variety constructed from the abelian surface $A$. Further, let $X$ be an arbitrary smooth projective surface with $\int_X c_1(X)^2 \neq 0$, and $X^{[k]}$ the Hilbert scheme of zero-dimensional subschemes of $X$ of length $k$. We give a formula which expresses the value of any complex genus on $A^{[[n]]}$ in terms of Chern numbers of the varieties $X^{[k]}$. It is shown by Ellingsrud and Stroemme how to use Bott's residue formula to effectively calculate the Chern numbers of the Hilbert schemes $(\IP^2)^{[k]}$ of points on the…
We give a method to find quartic Heisenberg invariant equations for Kummer varieties and we give some explicit examples. From these equations for g-dimensional Kummer varieties one obtains equations for the moduli space of g+1-dimensional Kummer varieties. These again define modular forms which vanish on the period matrices of Riemann surfaces. The modular forms that we find for g=5 appear to be new and of lower weight than known before.
We compute explicitly the Chow motive of any generalized Kummer variety associated to any abelian surface. In fact, it lies in the rigid tensor subcategory of the category of Chow motives generated by the Chow motive of the underlying abelian surface. One application of this calculation is to show that the Hodge conjecture holds for arbitrary products of generalized Kummer varieties. As another application, all numerically trivial 1-cycles on arbitrary products of generalized Kummer varieties are smash-nipotent.
For an abelian surface $A$, we explicitly construct two new families of stable vector bundles on the generalized Kummer variety $K_n(A)$ for $n\geqslant 2$. The first is the family of tautological bundles associated to stable bundles on $A$, and the second is the family of the "wrong-way" fibers of a universal family of stable bundles on the dual abelian surface $\widehat{A}$ parametrized by $K_n(A)$. Each family exhibits a smooth connected component in the moduli space of stable bundles on $K_n(A)$, which is holomorphic symplectic but not simply connected, contrary to the case of K3 surfaces.
We show that for every smooth projective surface X and every $n\ge 2$ the push-forward along the diagonal embedding gives a $P^{n-1}$-functor into the $S_n$-equivariant derived category of X^n. Using the Bridgeland--King--Reid--Haiman equivalence this yields a new autoequivalence of the derived category of the Hilbert scheme of n points on X. In the case that the canonical bundle of X is trivial and n=2 this autoequivalence coincides with the known EZ-spherical twist induced by the boundary of the Hilbert scheme. We also generalise the 16 spherical objects on the Kummer surface given by the ex…
For a generalized Kummer variety X of dimension 2n, we will construct for each 0 < i < n some co-isotropic subvarieties in X foliated by i-dimensional constant cycle subvarieties. These subvarieties serve to prove that the rational orbit filtration introduced by Voisin on the Chow group of zero-cycles of a generalized Kummer variety coincides with the induced Beauville decomposition from the Chow ring of abelian varieties. As a consequence, the rational orbit filtration is opposite to the conjectural Bloch-Beilinson filtration for generalized Kummer varieties.
We prove that the factorization of Appell's generalized hypergeometric series satisfying the so-called quadric property into a product of two Gauss' hypergeometric functions has a geometric origin: we first construct a generalized Kummer variety as minimal nonsingular model for a product-quotient surface with only rational double points from a pair of superelliptic curves of genus $2r-1$ with $r \in \mathbb{N}$. We then show that this generalized Kummer variety is equipped with two fibrations with fibers of genus $2r-1$. When periods of a holomorphic two-form over carefully crafted transcenden…
Let $X$ be a hyperkaehler manifold. Trianalytic subvarieties of $X$ are subvarieties which are complex analytic with respect to all complex structures induced by the hyperkaehler structure. Given a 2-dimensional complex torus $T$, the Hilbert scheme $T^{[n]}$ classifying zero-dimensional subschemes of $T$ admits a hyperkaehler structure. A finite cover of $T^{[n]}$ is a product of $T$ and a simply connected hyperkaehler manifold $K^{[n-1]}$, called generalized Kummer variety. We show that for $T$ generic, the corresponding generalized Kummer variety has no trianalytic subvarieties. This implie…
Given a smooth projective variety $M$ endowed with a faithful action of a finite group $G$, following Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura and Fantechi-Göttsche, we define the orbifold motive (or Chen-Ruan motive) of the quotient stack $[M/G]$ as an algebra object in the category of Chow motives. Inspired by Ruan, one can formulate a motivic version of his Cohomological HyperKähler Resolution Conjecture. We prove this motivic version, as well as its K-theoretic analogue conjectured by Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura, in two situations related to an abelian surface $A$ and a positive integer $n$. Case (A) concerns Hi…
Based on Cynk-Hulek method we construct complex Calabi-Yau varieties of arbitrary dimensions using elliptic curves with automorphism of order 6. Also we give formulas for Hodge numbers of varieties obtained from that construction. We shall generalize result of Katsura and Schütt to obtain arbitrarily dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds which are Zariski in any characteristic $p\not\equiv 1\pmod{12}.$
We analyze the intersection properties of projective planes embedded in generalized Kummer fourfolds, with a view toward classifying the homology classes represented by these submanifolds.
We explicitly find an equation and a projective embedding of the Kummer surface associated to the Jacobian of a curve of genus 2 given by an equation of the form y^2 + h(x)y = f(x) over an arbitrary ground field as well as several maps that can be used to perform arithmetic on it. This extends earlier work by Flynn and has applications, for instance, in computations of canonical heights for genus 2 Jacobians and in cryptography.
We discuss a generalization of Kummer construction which, on the base of an integral representation of a finite group and local resolution of its quotient, produces a higher dimensional variety with trivial canonical class. As an application we compute cohomology of some generalized Kummer varieties.
In the context of K3 mirror symmetry, the Greene-Plesser orbifolding method constructs a family of K3 surfaces, the mirror of quartic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$, starting from a special one-parameter family of K3 varieties known as the quartic Dwork pencil. We show that certain K3 double covers obtained from the three-parameter family of quartic Kummer surfaces associated with a principally polarized abelian surface generalize the relation of the Dwork pencil and the quartic mirror family. Moreover, for the three-parameter family we compute a formula for the rational point-count of its ge…
A natural and important question of study two-valued groups associated with hyperelliptic Jacobians and their relationship with integrable systems is motivated by seminal examples of relationship between algebraic two-valued groups related to elliptic curves and integrable systems such as elliptic billiards and celebrated Kowalevski top. The present paper is devoted to the case of genus 2, to the investigation of algebraic two-valued group structures on Kummer varieties. One of our approaches is based on the theory of $σ$-functions. It enables us to study the dependence of parameters of the cu…
