The Riemannian Bures metric on the space of (normalized) complex positive matrices is used for parameter estimation of mixed quantum states based on repeated measurements just as the Fisher information in classical statistics. It appears also in the concept of purifications of mixed states in quantum physics. Here we determine its scalar curvature and Ricci tensor and prove a lower bound for the curvature on the submanifold of trace one matrices. This bound is achieved for the maximally mixed state, a further hint for the quantum statistical meaning of the scalar curvature.
Due to considerable recent interest in the use of density matrices for a wide variety of purposes, including quantum computation, we present a general method for their parameterizations in terms of Euler angles. We assert that this is of more fundamental importance than (as several people have remarked to us) ``just another parameterization of the density matrix.'' There are several uses to which this methodology can be put. One that has received particular attention is in the construction of certain distinguished (Bures) measures on the $(n^2 -1)$-dimensional convex sets of $n \times n$ densi…
Bures distance holds a special place among various distance measures due to its several distinguished features and finds applications in diverse problems in quantum information theory. It is related to fidelity and, among other things, it serves as a bona fide measure for quantifying the separability of quantum states. In this work, we calculate exact analytical results for the mean root fidelity and mean square Bures distance between a fixed density matrix and a random density matrix, and also between two random density matrices. In the course of derivation, we also obtain spectral density fo…
The aim of this paper is to provide a method for explicit computation of the Bures metric over the space of $N$-level quantum system, based on the coset parametrization of density matrices.
One of the key issues in quantum information theory related problems concerns with that of distinguishability of quantum states. In this context, Bures distance serves as one of the foremost choices among various distance measures. It also relates to fidelity, which is another quantity of immense importance in quantum information theory. In this work, we derive exact results for the average fidelity and variance of the squared Bures distance between a fixed density matrix and a random density matrix, and also between two independent random density matrices. These results supplement the recentl…
The aim of this paper is to derive explicit formulae for the Riemannian Bures metric on the manifold of (finite dimensional) nondegenerate density matrices. The computation of the Bures metric using the presented equations does not require any diagonalization procedure and uses matrix products, determinants and traces, only.
We compute, using a formula of Dittmann, the Bures metric tensor (g) for the eight-dimensional convex set of three-level quantum systems, employing a newly-developed Euler angle-based parameterization of the 3 x 3 density matrices. Most of the individual metric elements (g_{ij}) are found to be expressible in relatively compact form, many of them in fact being exactly zero.
It is shown that the connection form (gauge field) related to the generalization of the Berry phase to mixed states proposed by Uhlmann satisfies the source-free Yang-Mills equation *D*Dw=0, where the Hodge star is taken with respect to the Bures metric on the space of finite dimensional nondegenerate density matrices.
The Bures distance between two displaced thermal states and the corresponding geometric quantities (statistical metric, volume element, scalar curvature) are computed. Under nonunitary (dissipative) dynamics, the statistical distance shows the same general features previously reported in the literature by Braunstein and Milburn for two--state systems. The scalar curvature turns out to have new interesting properties when compared to the curvature associated with squeezed thermal states.
Ensembles of random density matrices determined by various probability measures are analysed. A simple and efficient algorithm to generate at random density matrices distributed according to the Bures measure is proposed. This procedure may serve as an initial step in performing Bayesian approach to quantum state estimation based on the Bures prior. We study the distribution of purity of random mixed states. The moments of the distribution of purity are determined for quantum states generated with respect to the Bures measure. This calculation serves as an exemplary application of the "deform-…
Hubner's formula for the Bures (statistical distance) metric is applied to both a one-parameter and a two-parameter series (n=2,...,7) of sets of 2^n x 2^n density matrices. In the doubly-parameterized series, the sets are comprised of the n-fold tensor products --- corresponding to n independent, identical quantum systems --- of the 2 x 2 density matrices with real entries. The Gaussian curvatures of the corresponding Bures metrics are found to be constants (4/n). In the second series of 2^n x 2^n density matrices studied, the singly-parameterized sets are formed --- following a study of Krat…
For the eight-dimensional Riemannian manifold comprised by the three-level quantum systems endowed with the Bures metric, we numerically approximate the integrals over the manifold of several functions of the curvature and of its (anti-)self-dual parts. The motivation for pursuing this research is to elaborate upon the findings of Dittmann in his paper, "Yang-Mills equation and Bures metric" (quant-ph/9806018).
We consider an ensemble of random density matrices distributed according to the Bures measure. The corresponding joint probability density of eigenvalues is described by the fixed trace Bures-Hall ensemble of random matrices which, in turn, is related to its unrestricted trace counterpart via a Laplace transform. We investigate the spectral statistics of both these ensembles and, in particular, focus on the level density, for which we obtain exact closed-form results involving Pfaffians. In the fixed trace case, the level density expression is used to obtain an exact result for the average Hav…
We compute the volume of the N^2-1 dimensional set M_N of density matrices of size N with respect to the Bures measure and show that it is equal to that of a N^2-1 dimensional hyper-halfsphere of radius 1/2. For N=2 we obtain the volume of the Uhlmann 3-D hemisphere, embedded in R^4. We find also the area of the boundary of the set M_N and obtain analogous results for the smaller set of all real density matrices. An explicit formula for the Bures-Hall normalization constants is derived for an arbitrary N.
We report the results of certain integrations of quantum-theoretic interest, relying, in this regard, upon recently developed parameterizations of Boya et al of the n x n density matrices, in terms of squared components of the unit (n-1)-sphere and the n x n unitary matrices. Firstly, we express the normalized volume elements of the Bures (minimal monotone) metric for n = 2 and 3, obtaining thereby "Bures prior probability distributions" over the two- and three-state systems. Then, as an essential first step in extending these results to n > 3, we determine that the "Hall normalization constan…
We compute the Bures distance between two thermal squeezed states and deduce the Statistical Distance metric. By computing the curvature of this metric we can identify regions of parameter space most sensitive to changes in these parameters and thus lead to optimum detection statistics.
An explicit parameterization for the state space of an $n$-level density matrix is given. The parameterization is based on the canonical coset decomposition of unitary matrices. We also compute, explicitly, the Bures metric tensor over the state space of two- and three-level quantum systems.
We use the canonical coset parameterization and provide a formula with the unitary part of the Bures measure for non-degenerate systems in terms of the product of even Euclidean balls. This formula is shown to be consistent with the sampling of random states through the generation of random unitary matrices.
We compute the distribution of the purity for random density matrices (i.e.random mixed states) in a large quantum system, distributed according to the Bures measure. The full distribution of the purity is computed using a mapping to random matrix theory and then a Coulomb gas method. We find three regimes that correspond to two phase transitions in the associated Coulomb gas. The first transition is characterized by an explosion of the third derivative on the left of the transition point. The second transition is of first order, it is characterized by the detachement of a single charge of the…
We pursue a number of analytical directions, motivated to some extent initially by the possibility of developing a methodology for formally proving or disproving a certain conjecture of quantum-theoretical relevance (quant-ph/0308037). It asserts that the 15-dimensional volume occupied by the separable two-qubit density matrices is (\sqrt{2}-1)/3, as measured in terms of the statistical distinguishability metric (four times the Bures or minimal monotone metric). Somewhat disappointingly, however, the several various analyses that we report, though we hope of independent/autonomous interest, ap…
We conduct a study based on the Bures (minimal monotone) metric, analogous to that recently reported for the Hilbert-Schmidt (flat or Euclidean) metric (arXiv:0704.3723v2). Among the interesting results obtained there had been proportionalities--in exact correspondence to the Dyson indices β= 1, 2, 4 of random matrix theory--between the fourth, second and first powers of the separability functions S_{type}(μ) for real, complex and quaternionic qubit-qubit scenarios, Here μ=\sqrt{\frac{ρ_{11} ρ_{44}}{ρ_{22} ρ_{33}}}, with ρbeing a 4 x 4 density matrix. Separability functions have proved useful-…
In previous studies, we have explored the ansatz that the volume elements of the Bures metrics over quantum systems might serve as prior distributions, in analogy to the (classical) Bayesian role of the volume elements ("Jeffreys' priors") of Fisher information metrics. Continuing this work, we obtain exact Bures probabilities that the members of certain low-dimensional subsets of the fifteen-dimensional convex set of 4 x 4 density matrices are separable or classically correlated. The main analytical tools employed are symbolic integration and a formula of Dittmann (quant-ph/9908044) for Bures…
Statistical properties of ensembles of random density matrices are investigated. We compute traces and von Neumann entropies averaged over ensembles of random density matrices distributed according to the Bures measure. The eigenvalues of the random density matrices are analyzed: we derive the eigenvalue distribution for the Bures ensemble which is shown to be broader then the quarter--circle distribution characteristic of the Hilbert--Schmidt ensemble. For measures induced by partial tracing over the environment we compute exactly the two-point eigenvalue correlation function.
In a unital C*-algebra with a faithful trace functional $τ$, the set $D_τ(A)$ of positive $ρ\in A$ of trace τ(ρ)=1 is an algebraic analogue of the space of density matrices (the set of all positive matrices of a fixed dimension of unit trace). Motivated by the literature concerning the metric properties of the space of density matrices, the present paper studies the density space $D_τ(A)$ in terms of the Bures metric. Linear maps on A that map $D_τ(A)$ back into itself are positive and trace preserving, hence, they may be viewed as an algebraic analogue of a quantum channel, which are studied …
We show that two quantities in quantum metrology that were thought to be the same, the quantum Fisher information matrix and the Bures metric, are not the same. They differ at points at which the rank of the density matrix changes. The quantum Fisher information matrix is discontinuous at these points. However, these discontinuities are removable in some sense. We show that the expression given by the Bures metric represents the continuous version of the quantum Fisher information matrix. We also derive an explicit formula for the Bures metric for both singular and non-singular density matrice…
Utilizing a number of results of Dittmann, we investigate the nature of the Yang-Mills field over the eight-dimensional convex set, endowed with the Bures metric, of three-level quantum systems. Parallelling the decomposition of eight-dimensional Euclidean fields by Corrigan, Devchand, Fairlie and Nuyts, as well as Figueoroa-O'Farrill and others, we investigate the properties of self-dual and anti-self-dual four-forms corresponding specifically to our Bures/non-Euclidean context. For any of a number of (nondegenerate) 3 x 3 density matrices, we are able to solve the eigenequation of the associ…
We obtain two sided estimates for the Bures volume of an arbitrary subset of the set of $N\times N$ density matrices, in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt volume of that subset. For general subsets, our results are essentially optimal (for large $N$). As applications, we derive in particular nontrivial lower and upper bounds for the Bures volume of sets of separable states and for sets of states with positive partial transpose. It is the aim of this article to determine curvature quantities of an arbitrary Riemannian monotone metric on the space of positive matrices resp. nonsingular density matrices. Special interest is focused on the scalar curvature due to its expected quantum statistical meaning. The scalar curvature is explained in more detail for three examples, the Bures metric, the largest monotone metric and the Kubo-Mori metric. In particular, we show an important conjecture of Petz concerning the Kubo-Mori metric up to a formal proof of the concavity of a certain function on R_+^3. This concavity seems to …

We analyze the Bures metric over the manifold of thermal density matrices for systems featuring a zero temperature quantum phase transition. We show that the quantum critical region can be characterized in terms of the temperature scaling behavior of the metric tensor itself. Furthermore, the analysis of the metric tensor when both temperature and an external field are varied, allows to complement the understanding of the phase diagram including cross-over regions which are not characterized by any singular behavior. These results provide a further extension of the scope of the metric approach…
In a number of previous studies, we have investigated the use of the volume element of the Bures (minimal monotone) metric -- identically, one-fourth of the statistical distinguishability (SD) metric -- as a natural measure over the (n^2-1)-dimensional convex set of n x n density matrices. This has led us for the cases n = 4 and 6 to estimates of the prior (Bures/SD) probabilities that qubit-qubit and qubit-qutrit pairs are separable. Here, we extend this work from such bipartite systems to the tripartite "laboratory'' quantum systems possessing U x U x U symmetry recently constructed by Eggel…
We study 12 parameter families of two qubit density matrices, arising from a special class of two-fermion systems with four single particle states or alternatively from a four-qubit state with amplitudes arranged in an antisymmetric matrix. We calculate the Wooters concurrences and the negativities in a closed form and study their behavior. We use these results to show that the relevant entanglement measures satisfy the generalized Coffman-Kundu-Wootters formula of distributed entanglement. An explicit formula for the residual tangle is also given. The geometry of such density matrices is elab…
Extensive numerical integration results lead us to conjecture that the silver mean, that is, s = \sqrt{2}-1 = .414214 plays a fundamental role in certain geometries (those given by monotone metrics) imposable on the 15-dimensional convex set of two-qubit systems. For example, we hypothesize that the volume of separable two-qubit states, as measured in terms of (four times) the minimal monotone or Bures metric is s/3, and 10s in terms of (four times) the Kubo-Mori monotone metric. Also, we conjecture, in terms of (four times) the Bures metric, that that part of the 14-dimensional boundary of se…
We investigate the level density for several ensembles of positive random matrices of a Wishart--like structure, $W=XX^{\dagger}$, where $X$ stands for a nonhermitian random matrix. In particular, making use of the Cauchy transform, we study free multiplicative powers of the Marchenko-Pastur (MP) distribution, ${\rm MP}^{\boxtimes s}$, which for an integer $s$ yield Fuss-Catalan distributions corresponding to a product of $s$ independent square random matrices, $X=X_1\cdots X_s$. New formulae for the level densities are derived for $s=3$ and $s=1/3$. Moreover, the level density corresponding t…
The Bures-Hall ensemble is a unique measure of density matrices that satisfies various distinguished properties in quantum information processing. In this work, we study the statistical behavior of entanglement over the Bures-Hall ensemble as measured by the simplest form of an entanglement entropy - the quantum purity. The main results of this work are the exact second and third moment expressions of quantum purity valid for any subsystem dimensions, where the corresponding results in the literature are limited to the scenario of equal subsystem dimensions. In obtaining the results, we have d…
We show that nonorthogonal states achieve a higher level of entanglement when one party undergoes uniform acceleration. We also show that in this regime non-orthogonal states achieve a higher fidelity for teleportation. A quantum field as observed by an observer confined to a Rindler wedge acts as an open system. When one traces over the field modes in the causally disconnected region of space time, one finds that, for a qubit derived from the modes of a scalar field, the effective state space of a qubit is deformed. In order to show this we numerically calculate the Bures angle between states…
We study various methods to generate ensembles of random density matrices of a fixed size N, obtained by partial trace of pure states on composite systems. Structured ensembles of random pure states, invariant with respect to local unitary transformations are introduced. To analyze statistical properties of quantum entanglement in bi-partite systems we analyze the distribution of Schmidt coefficients of random pure states. Such a distribution is derived in the case of a superposition of k random maximally entangled states. For another ensemble, obtained by performing selective measurements in …
A quantum version of the Monge--Kantorovich optimal transport problem is analyzed. The transport cost is minimized over the set of all bipartite coupling states $ρ^{AB}$, such that both of its reduced density matrices $ρ^A$ and $ρ^B$ of dimension $N$ are fixed. We show that, selecting the quantum cost matrix to be proportional to the projector on the antisymmetric subspace, the minimal transport cost leads to a semidistance between $ρ^A$ and $ρ^B$, which is bounded from below by the rescaled Bures distance and from above by the root infidelity. In the single qubit case we provide a semi-analyt…
We present a new method of deriving the geometry of entanglement wedges in holography directly from conformal field theories (CFTs). We analyze an information metric called the Bures metric of reduced density matrices for locally excited states. This measures distinguishability of states with different points excited. For a subsystem given by an interval, we precisely reproduce the expected entanglement wedge for two dimensional holographic CFTs from the Bures metric, which turns out to be proportional to the AdS metric on a time slice. On the other hand, for free scalar CFTs, we do not find a…
This is a review of the ideas behind the Fisher--Rao metric on classical probability distributions, and how they generalize to metrics on density matrices. As is well known, the unique Fisher--Rao metric then becomes a large family of monotone metrics. Finally I focus on the Bures--Uhlmann metric, and discuss a recent result that connects the geometric operator mean to a geodesic billiard on the set of density matrices.
We apply and extend recent results of Krattenthaler and Slater (quant-ph/9612043), who sought quantum analogs of seminal work on universal data compression of Clarke and Barron. KS obtained explicit formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the 2^m x 2^m density matrices gotten by averaging the m-fold tensor products with themselves of the 2 x 2 density matrices. The weighting was done with respect to a one-parameter family of probability distributions, all the members of which are spherically-symmetric over the "Bloch sphere" of two-level quantum systems. This family includes the norma…
In a previous study (quant-ph/0207181), we formulated a conjecture that arbitrarily coupled qubits (describable by 4 x 4 density matrices) are separable with an a priori probability of 8/(11 π^2) = 0.0736881. For this purpose, we employed the normalized volume element of the Bures (minimal monotone) metric as a probability distribution over the fifteen-dimensional convex set of 4 x 4 density matrices. Here, we provide further/independent (quasi-Monte Carlo numerical integration) evidence of a stronger nature (giving an estimate of 0.0736858 vs. 0.0737012 previously) for this conjecture. Additi…
We generalize the Fubini-Study method for pure-state complexity to generic quantum states by taking Bures metric or quantum Fisher information metric on the space of density matrices as the complexity measure. Due to Uhlmann's theorem, we show that the mixed-state complexity exactly equals the purification complexity measured by the Fubini-Study metric for purified states but without explicitly applying any purification. We also find the purification complexity is non-increasing under any trace-preserving quantum operations. We also study the mixed Gaussian states as an example to explicitly i…
We analyze mean fidelity between random density matrices of size N, generated with respect to various probability measures in the space of mixed quantum states: Hilbert-Schmidt measure, Bures (statistical) measure, the measures induced by partial trace and the natural measure on the space of pure states. In certain cases explicit probability distributions for fidelity are derived. Results obtained may be used to gauge the quality of quantum information processing schemes.
The numerical generation of random quantum states (RQS) is an important procedure for investigations in quantum information science. Here we review some methods that may be used for performing that task. We start by presenting a simple procedure for generating random state vectors, for which the main tool is the random sampling of unbiased discrete probability distributions (DPD). Afterwards the creation of random density matrices is addressed. In this context we first present the standard method, which consists in using the spectral decomposition of a quantum state for getting RQS from random…
We investigate the possibility of deriving analytical formulas for the 15-dimensional separable volumes, in terms of any of a number of metrics of interest (Hilbert-Schmidt [HS], Bures,...), of the two-qubit (four-level) systems. This would appear to require 15-fold symbolic integrations over a complicated convex body (defined by both separability and feasibility constraints). The associated 15-dimensional integrands -- in terms of the Tilma-Byrd-Sudarshan Euler-angle-based parameterization of the 4 x 4 density matrices ρ(math-ph/0202002) -- would be the products of 12-dimensional Haar measure…
Bužek and Hillery proposed a universal quantum-copying machine (UQCM) (i.e., transformation) to analyze the possibility of cloning arbitrary states. The UQCM copies quantum-mechanical states with the quality of its output does not depend on the input. We propose a slightly different transformation to analyze a restricted set of input states. We impose the conditions (I) the density matrices of the two output states are the same, and that (II) the distance between input density operator and the output density operators is input state independent. Using Hilbert-Schmidt norm and Bures fidelity, w…

Among the monotone metrics on the (n^{2} - 1)-dimensional convex set of n x n density matrices, as Petz and Sudar have recently elaborated, there are a minimal (Bures) and a maximal one. We examine the proposition that it is physically meaningful to treat the volume elements of these metrics as densities-of-states for thermodynamic purposes. In the n = 2 (spin-1/2) case, use of the maximal monotone metric, in fact, does lead to the adoption of the Langevin (and not the Brillouin) functions, thus, completely conforming with a recent probabilistic argument of Lavenda. Brody and Hughston also arr…
