The rank 4 locus of a general skew-symmetric 7x7 matrix gives the pfaffian variety in P^20 which is not defined as a complete intersection. Intersecting this with a general P^6 gives a Calabi-Yau manifold. An orbifold construction seems to give the 1-parameter mirror-family of this. However, corresponding to two points in the 1-parameter family of complex structures, both with maximally unipotent monodromy, are two different mirror-maps: one corresponding to the general pfaffian section, the other to a general intersection of G(2,7) in P^20 with a P^13. Apparently, the pfaffian and G(2,7) sections constitute different parts of the A-model (Kahler structure related) moduli space, and, thus, represent different parts of the same conformal field theory moduli space.
We establish the equality of stringy $E$-functions for double mirror Calabi-Yau complete intersections in the varieties of skew forms of rank at most $2k$ and at most $n-1-2k$ on a vector space of odd dimension $n$.
We consider the Pfaffian-Grassmannian equivalence from the motivic point of view. The main result is that under certain numerical conditions, both sides of the equivalence are related on the level of Chow motives. The consequences include a verification of Orlov's conjecture for Borisov's Calabi-Yau threefolds, and verifications of Kimura's finite-dimensionality conjecture, Voevodsky's smash conjecture and the Hodge conjecture for certain linear sections of Grassmannians. We also obtain new examples of Fano varieties with infinite-dimensional Griffiths group.
We argue that there exists a derived equivalence between Calabi-Yau threefolds obtained by taking dual hyperplane sections (of the appropriate codimension) of the Grassmannian G(2, 7) and the Pfaffian Pf(7). The existence of such an equivalence has been conjectured by physicists for almost ten years, as the two families of Calabi-Yau threefolds are believed to have the same mirror. It is the first example of a derived equivalence between Calabi-Yau threefolds which are provably non-birational.
In this note we construct conifold transitions between several Calabi-Yau threefolds given by Pfaffians in weighted projective spaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds appearing as complete intersections in toric varieties. We use the obtained results to predict mirrors following ideas of \cite{BCKS, Batsmalltoricdegen}. In particular we consider the family of Calabi--Yau threefolds of degree 25 in $\mathbb{P}^9$ obtained as a transverse intersection of two Grassmannians in their Plucker embeddings.
We show that homologically projectively dual varieties for Grassmannians Gr(2,6) and Gr(2,7) are given by certain noncommutative resolutions of singularities of the corresponding Pfaffian varieties. As an application we describe the derived categories of linear sections of these Grassmannians and Pfaffians. In particular, we show that (1) the derived category of a Pfaffian cubic 4-fold admits a semiorthogonal decompositions consisting of 3 exceptional line bundles, and of the derived category of a K3-surface; (2) mutually orthogonal Calabi-Yau linear sections of Gr(2,7) and of the correspondin…
The Pfaffian-Grassmannian correspondence relates certain pairs of derived equivalent non-birational Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Given such a pair, I construct a set of derived equivalences corresponding to mutations of an exceptional collection on the relevant Grassmannian, and give a mirror symmetry interpretation, following a physical analysis of Eager, Hori, Knapp, and Romo.
We formulate a generalization of Givental-Kim's quantum hyperplane principle. This is applied to compute the quantum cohomology of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold defined as the rank 4 locus of a general skew-symmetric 7x7 matrix with coeffisients in P^6. The computation verifies the mirror symmetry predictions of Rødland in math.AG/9801092.
We solve Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa (BCOV) holomorphic anomaly equation to determine the higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants ($g \leq 5$) of the derived equivalent Calabi-Yau threefolds, which are of the appropriate codimensions in the Grassmannian Gr(2,7) and the Pfaffian Pf(7).
Calabi-Yau manifolds are important objects in algebraic geometry and in theoretical physics. A hypothesis of mirror symmetry is that Calabi-Yau manifolds of dimension 3 come in pairs, with the Hodge numbers of one manifold mirroring the Hodge numbers of the other. In this thesis, Calabi-Yau manifolds are constructed by smoothing Stanley-Reisner schemes of triangulations of 3-spheres. The triangulations of the 3-sphere with 7 or 8 vertices have been constructed and classified by Grünbaum and Sreedharan (1967). In this thesis we characterize the Calabi-Yau manifolds obtained from the triangulati…
We give a new proof of the 'Pfaffian-Grassmannian' derived equivalence between certain pairs of non-birational Calabi-Yau threefolds. Our proof follows the physical constructions of Hori and Tong, and we factor the equivalence into three steps by passing through some intermediate categories of (global) matrix factorizations. The first step is global Knoerrer periodicity, the second comes from a birational map between Landau-Ginzburg B-models, and for the third we develop some new techniques.
We study $I$-functions of Calabi--Yau 3-folds with Picard number one which are zero loci of general sections of direct sums of globally generated irreducible homogeneous vector bundles on Grassmannians.
Based on the method by [Küc95], we give a procedure to list up all complete intersection Calabi--Yau manifolds with respect to direct sums of irreducible homogeneous vector bundles on Grassmannians for each dimension. In particular, we give a classification of such Calabi--Yau 3-folds and determine their topological invariants. We also give alternative descriptions for some of them.
We resolve a conjecture about a class of binomial initial ideals of $I_{2,n}$, the ideal of the Grassmannian, Gr$(2,\mathbb{C}^n$), which are associated to phylogenetic trees. For a weight vector $ω$ in the tropical Grassmannian, $in_ω(I_{2,n}) = J_\mathcal{T}$ is the ideal associated to the tree $\mathcal{T}$. The ideal generated by the $2r \times 2r$ subpfaffians of a generic $n \times n$ skew-symmetric matrix is precisely $I_{2,n}^{\{r-1\}}$, the $(r-1)$-secant of $I_{2,n}$. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions on the topology of $\mathcal{T}$ in order for $in_ω(I_{2,n})^{\{2\}} = J…
We study the torus equivariant Schubert classes of the Grassmannian of non-maximal isotropic subspaces in a symplectic vector space. We prove a formula that expresses each of those classes as a sum of multi Schur-Pfaffians, whose entries are equivariantly modified special Schubert classes. Our result gives a proof to Wilson's conjectural formula, which generalizes the Giambelli formula for the ordinary cohomology proved by Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis, given in terms of Young's raising operators. Furthermore we show that the formula extends to a certain family of Schubert classes of the symplectic par…
In this paper we give gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) realizations of a number of geometries not previously presented in GLSMs. We begin by describing GLSM realizations of maps including Veronese and Segre embeddings, which can be applied to give GLSMs explicitly describing constructions such as the intersection of one hypersurface with the image under some map of another. We also discuss GLSMs for intersections of Grassmannians and Pfaffians with one another, and with their images under various maps, which sometimes form exotic constructions of Calabi-Yaus, as well as GLSMs for other exotic …
We prove the derived equivalence of a pair of non-compact Calabi-Yau 7-folds, which are the total spaces of certain rank 2 bundles on $G_2$-Grassmannians. The proof follows that of the derived equivalence of Calabi-Yau 3-folds in $G_2$-Grassmannians by Kuznetsov closely.
The aim of this article is to report on recent progress in understanding mirror symmetry for some non-complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds. We first construct four new smooth non-complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds with h^{1,1}=1, whose existence was previously conjectured by C. van Enckevort and D. van Straten. We then compute the period integrals of candidate mirror families of F. Tonoli's degree 13 Calabi-Yau threefold and three of the new Calabi-Yau threefolds. The Picard-Fuchs equations coincide with the expected Calabi-Yau equations. Some of the mirror families turn out to…
Using tropical geometry we propose a mirror construction for monomial degenerations of Calabi-Yau varieties in toric Fano varieties. The construction reproduces the mirror constructions by Batyrev for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and by Batyrev and Borisov for Calabi-Yau complete intersections. We apply the construction to Pfaffian examples and recover the mirror given by Rodland for the degree 14 Calabi-Yau threefold in PP^6 defined by the Pfaffians of a general linear 7x7 skew-symmetric matrix. We provide the necessary background knowledge entering into the tropical mirror construction such as t…
Given a pair of derived-equivalent Calabi--Yau manifolds of dimension more than two, we prove that the derived equivalence can be extended to general fibers of versal deformations. As an application, we give a new proof of the Pfaffian--Grassmannian derived equivalence.
We study the intersection of two copies of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,5)$ embedded in $\mathbf{P}^9$, and the intersection of the two projectively dual Grassmannians in the dual projective space. These intersections are deformation equivalent, derived equivalent Calabi-Yau threefolds. We prove that generically they are not birational. As a consequence, we obtain a counterexample to the birational Torelli problem for Calabi-Yau threefolds. We also show that these threefolds give a new pair of varieties whose classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties are not equal, but whose difference is annihilated by…
The most fundamental example of mirror symmetry compares the Fermat hypersurfaces in P^n and P^n/G, where G is a finite group that acts on P^n and preserves the Fermat hypersurface. We generalise this to hypersurfaces in Grassmannians, where the picture is richer and more complex. There is a finite group G that acts on the Grassmannian Gr(n,r) and preserves an appropriate Calabi-Yau hypersurface. We establish how mirror symmetry, toric degenerations, blow-ups and variation of GIT relate the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces inside Gr(n,r) and Gr(n,r)/G. This allows us to describe a compactification of …
We examine a class of Calabi-Yau varieties of the determinantal type in Grassmannians and clarify what kind of examples can be constructed explicitly. We also demonstrate how to compute their genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants from the analysis of the Givental $I$-functions. By constructing $I$-functions from the supersymmetric localization formula for the two dimensional gauged linear sigma models, we describe an algorithm to evaluate the genus-0 A-model correlation functions appropriately. We also check that our results for the Gromov-Witten invariants are consistent with previous results for …
In this paper we show that conifold transitions between Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be used for the construction of mirror manifolds and for the computation of the instanton numbers of rational curves on complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds in Grassmannians. Using a natural degeneration of Grassmannians $G(k,n)$ to some Gorenstein toric Fano varieties $P(k,n)$ with conifolds singularities which was recently described by Sturmfels, we suggest an explicit mirror construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections $X \subset G(k,n)$ of arbitrary dimension. Our mirror construction is consistent with…
We define a notion of vexillary signed permutation in types B, C, and D, corresponding to natural degeneracy loci for vector bundles with symmetries of those types. We show that the classes of these loci are given by explicit Pfaffian formulas. The Grassmannian formulas of Kazarian are important special cases, and the corresponding double Schubert polynomials of Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse are shown to be equal to these Pfaffians.
It is well known that the Fano scheme of lines on a cubic 4-fold is a symplectic variety. We generalize this fact by constructing a closed p-form with p=2n-4 on the Fano scheme of lines on a (2n-2)-dimensional hypersurface Y of degree n. We provide several definitions of this form - via the Abel-Jacobi map, via Hochschild homology, and via the linkage class, and compute it explicitly for n = 4. In the special case of a Pfaffian hypersurface Y we show that the Fano scheme is birational to a certain moduli space of sheaves on a p-dimensional Calabi--Yau variety X arising naturally in the context…
We study Kustin-Miller unprojections between Calabi-Yau threefolds or more precisely the geometric transitions they induce. We use them to connect many families of Calabi-Yau threefolds with Picard number one to the web of Calabi Yau complete intersections. This enables us to find explicit description of a few known families of Calabi-Yau threefolds in terms of equations. Moreover we find two new examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds with Picard group of rank one, described by Pfaffian equations in weighted projective spaces.

This work is motivated by the relation between the KP and BKP integrable hierarchies, whose $τ$-functions may be viewed as sections of dual determinantal and Pfaffian line bundles over infinite dimensional Grassmannians. In finite dimensions, we show how to relate the Cartan map which, for a vector space $V$ of dimension $N$, embeds the Grassmannian ${\mathrm {Gr}}^0_V(V+V^*)$ of maximal isotropic subspaces of $V+ V^*$, with respect to the natural scalar product, into the projectivization of the exterior space $Λ(V)$, and the Plücker map, which embeds the Grassmannian ${\mathrm {Gr}}_V(V+ V^*)…
Using intersections of two Grassmannians in ${\mathbb{P}}^9$, Ottem-Rennemo and Borisov-Căldăraru-Perry have exhibited pairs of Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$ and $Y$ that are deformation equivalent, L-equivalent and derived equivalent, but not birational. To complete the picture, we show that $X$ and $Y$ have isomorphic Chow motives.
We propose Picard-Fuchs equations for periods of nonabelian mirrors in this paper. The number of parameters in our Picard-Fuchs equations is the rank of the gauge group of the nonabelian GLSM, which is eventually reduced to the actual number of Kähler parameters. These Picard-Fuchs equations are concise and novel. We justify our proposal by reproducing existing mathematical results, namely Picard-Fuchs equations of Grassmannians and Calabi-Yau manifolds as complete intersections in Grassmannians. Furthermore, our approach can be applied to other nonabelian GLSMs, so we compute Picard-Fuchs equ…
Using geometrical correspondences induced by projections and two-steps flag varieties, and a generalization of Orlov's projective bundle theorem, we relate the Hodge structures and derived categories of subvarieties of different Grassmannians. We construct isomorphisms between Calabi-Yau subHodge structures of hyperplane sections of Gr(3,n) and those of other varieties arising from symplectic Grassmannian and/or congruences of lines or planes. Similar results hold conjecturally for Calabi-Yau subcategories: we describe in details the Hodge structures and give partial categorical results relati…
The Grassmannian Gr(2,5) is embedded in $\Bbb{P}^9$ via the Plücker embedding. The intersection of two general PGL(10)-translates of Gr(2,5) is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold X, and the intersection of the projective duals of the two translates is another Calabi-Yau 3-fold Y, deformation equivalent to X. Applying results of Kuznetsov and Jiang-Leung-Xie shows that X and Y are derived equivalent, which by a result of Addington implies that their third cohomology groups are isomorphic as polarised Hodge structures. We show that X and Y provide counterexamples to a certain "birational" Torelli statement for…
We show that the dimer algebra of a connected Postnikov diagram in the disc is bimodule internally 3-Calabi-Yau in the sense of the author's earlier work. As a consequence, we obtain an additive categorification of the cluster algebra associated to the diagram, which (after inverting frozen variables) is isomorphic to the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety in the Grassmannian by a recent result of Galashin and Lam. We show that our categorification can be realised as a full extension closed subcategory of Jensen-King-Su's Grassmannian cluster category, in a way compatible with …
We construct a surprisingly large class of new Calabi-Yau 3-folds $X$ with small Picard numbers and propose a construction of their mirrors $X^*$ using smoothings of toric hypersurfaces with conifold singularities. These new examples are related to the previously known ones via conifold transitions. Our results generalize the mirror construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Grassmannians and flag manifolds via toric degenerations. There exist exactly 198849 reflexive 4-polytopes whose 2-faces are only triangles or parallelograms of minimal volume. Every such polytope gives rise to …
A projectively normal Calabi-Yau threefold $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ has an ideal $I_X$ which is arithmetically Gorenstein, of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity four. Such ideals have been intensively studied when $I_X$ is a complete intersection, as well as in the case where $X$ is codimension three. In the latter case, the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud theorem shows that $I_X$ is given by the Pfaffians of a skew-symmetric matrix. A number of recent papers study the situation when $I_X$ has codimension four. We prove there are 16 possible betti tables for an arithmetically Gorenstein ideal $I$ with $\math…
Elliptic and genus one fibered Calabi-Yau spaces play a prominent role in string theory and mathematics. In this article we discuss a class of genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds with 5-sections from various perspectives. In algebraic geometry, such Calabi-Yaus can be constructed as complete intersections in Grassmannian fibrations and as Pfaffian varieties. These constructions naturally fit into the framework of homological projective duality and lead to dual pairs of Calabi-Yaus. From a physics perspective, these spaces can be realised as low-energy configurations ("phases") of gauged li…
In this work we study the quantum periods together with their Picard-Fuchs differential equations of Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In contrast to Calabi-Yau threefolds, we argue that the large volume points of Calabi-Yau fourfolds generically are regular singular points of the Picard-Fuchs operators of non-maximally unipotent monodromy. We demonstrate this property in explicit examples of Calabi-Yau fourfolds with a single Kahler modulus. For these examples we construct integral quantum periods and study their global properties in the quantum Kahler moduli space with the help of numerical analytic con…
Many N=(2,2) two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models with Calabi-Yau target spaces admit ultraviolet descriptions as N=(2,2) gauge theories (gauged linear sigma models). We conjecture that the two-sphere partition function of such ultraviolet gauge theories -- recently computed via localization by Benini et al. and Doroud et al. -- yields the exact Kähler potential on the quantum Kähler moduli space for Calabi-Yau threefold target spaces. In particular, this allows one to compute the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants for any such Calabi-Yau threefold without the use of mirror symmetry. More g…
We start a systematic study of non-projected supermanifolds, concentrating on supermanifolds with fermionic dimension 2 and with the reduced manifold a complex projective space. We show that all the non-projected supermanifolds of dimension $2|2$ over $\mathbb{P}^2$ are completely characterised by a non-zero 1-form $ω$ and by a locally free sheaf $\mathcal{F}$ of rank $0|2$, satisfying $Sym^2 \mathcal{F} \cong K_{\mathbb{P}^2}$. Denoting such supermanifolds with $\mathbb{P}^{2}_ω(\mathcal{F})$, we show that all of them are Calabi-Yau supermanifolds and, when $ω\neq 0$, they are non-projective,…
We introduce and initiate the investigation of a general class of 4d, N=1 quiver gauge theories whose Lagrangian is defined by a bipartite graph on a Riemann surface, with or without boundaries. We refer to such class of theories as Bipartite Field Theories (BFTs). BFTs underlie a wide spectrum of interesting physical systems, including: D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds, their mirror configurations of D6-branes, cluster integrable systems in (0+1) dimensions and leading singularities in scattering amplitudes for N=4 SYM. While our discussion is fully general, we focus on models that …
