We study the intersection of two copies of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,5)$ embedded in $\mathbf{P}^9$, and the intersection of the two projectively dual Grassmannians in the dual projective space. These intersections are deformation equivalent, derived equivalent Calabi-Yau threefolds. We prove that generically they are not birational. As a consequence, we obtain a counterexample to the birational Torelli problem for Calabi-Yau threefolds. We also show that these threefolds give a new pair of varieties whose classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties are not equal, but whose difference is annihilated by a power of the class of the affine line. Our proof of non-birationality involves a detailed study of the moduli stack of Calabi-Yau threefolds of the above type, which may be of independent interest.
Using localization methods on the moduli space of stable quasimaps to Grassmannian, we give explicit formulas of $J$-function and double $J$-function of stable quasimaps for complete intersection in Grassmannian.
We calculate a Griffiths-type ring for smooth complete intersection in Grassmannians. This is the analogue of the classical Jacobian ring for complete intersections in projective space, and allows us to explicitly compute their Hodge groups.
In this article we establish an analogue of the Barth-Van de Ven-Tyurin-Sato theorem. We prove that a finite rank vector bundle on a complete intersection of finite codimension in a linear ind-Grassmannian is isomorphic to a direct sum of line bundles.
In 1997 Batyrev, Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim, and van Straten suggested a construction of Landau--Ginzburg models for Fano complete intersections in Grassmannians similar to Givental's construction for complete intersections in smooth toric varieties. We show that for a Fano complete intersection in Grassmannians the result of the above construction is birational to a complex torus. In other words, the complete intersections under consideration have very weak Landau--Ginzburg models.
Let $X$ be an isotropic Grassmannian of type $B$, $C$, or $D$. In this paper we calculate $K$-theoretic Pieri-type triple intersection numbers for $X$: that is, the sheaf Euler characteristic of the triple intersection of two arbitrary Schubert varieties and a special Schubert variety in general position. We do this by determining explicit equations for the projected Richardson variety corresponding to the two arbitrary Schubert varieties, and show that it is a complete intersection in projective space. The $K$-theoretic Pieri coefficients are alternating sums of these triple intersection numb…
Using intersections of two Grassmannians in ${\mathbb{P}}^9$, Ottem-Rennemo and Borisov-Căldăraru-Perry have exhibited pairs of Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$ and $Y$ that are deformation equivalent, L-equivalent and derived equivalent, but not birational. To complete the picture, we show that $X$ and $Y$ have isomorphic Chow motives.
We show that intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable bundles of coprime rank and degree over a smooth complex curve can be recovered as highest-degree asymptotics in formulas of Vafa-Intriligator type. In particular, we explicitly evaluate all intersection numbers appearing in the Verlinde formula. Our results are in agreement with previous computations of Witten, Jeffrey-Kirwan and Liu. Moreover, we prove the vanishing of certain intersections on a suitable Quot scheme which can be interpreted as giving equations between counts of maps to the Grassmannian.
Based on the method by [Küc95], we give a procedure to list up all complete intersection Calabi--Yau manifolds with respect to direct sums of irreducible homogeneous vector bundles on Grassmannians for each dimension. In particular, we give a classification of such Calabi--Yau 3-folds and determine their topological invariants. We also give alternative descriptions for some of them.
The simplest example of an ind-Grassmannian is the infinite projective space $\mathbf P^\infty$. The Barth-Van de Ven-Tyurin (BVT) Theorem, proved more than 30 years ago \cite{BV}, \cite{T}, \cite{Sa} (see also a recent proof by A. Coandă and G. Trautmann, \cite{CT}), claims that any vector bundle of finite rank on $\mathbf P^\infty$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of line bundles. In the last decade natural examples of infinite flag varieties (or flag ind-varieties) have arisen as homogeneous spaces of locally linear ind-groups, \cite{DPW}, \cite{DiP}. In the present paper we concentrate our at…
We derive some explicit expressions for correlators on Grassmannian G_r(C^n) as well as on the moduli space of holomorphic maps, of a fixed degree d, from sphere into the Grassmannian. Correlators obtained on the Grassmannain are a first step generalization of the Schubert formula for the self-intersection. The intersection numbers on the moduli space for r=2,3 are given explicitly by two closed formulas, when r=2 the intersection numbers, are found to generate the alternate Fibonacci numbers, the Pell numbers and in general a random walk of a particle on a line with absorbing barriers. For r=…
We give an elementary proof of the Pieri-type formula in the cohomology of a Grassmannian of maximal isotropic subspaces of an odd orthogonal or symplectic vector space. This proof proceeds by explicitly computing a triple intersection of Schubert varieties. The decisive step is an explicit description of the intersection of two Schubert varieties, from which the multiplicities (which are powers of 2) in the Pieri-type formula are deduced.
In this paper we study the intersection theory on surfaces with abelian quotient singularities and we derive properties of quotients of weighted projective planes. We also use this theory to study weighted blow-ups in order to construct embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolutions of plane curve singularities and abstract $\mathbf{Q}$-resolutions of surfaces.
In a spirit of Givental's constructions Batyrev, Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim, and van Straten suggested Landau--Ginzburg models for smooth Fano complete intersections in Grassmannians and partial flag varieties as certain complete intersections in complex tori equipped with special functions called superpotentials. We provide a particular algorithm for constructing birational isomorphisms of these models for complete intersections in Grassmannians of planes with complex tori. In this case the superpotentials are given by Laurent polynomials. We study Givental's integrals for Landau--Ginzburg models …
We prove the following results. If $X_3$ is a generic complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-fold, (1) then for each natural number $d$ there exists a rational map \par\hspace{1 cc} $c\in Hom_{bir}(\mathbf P^1, X_3)$ of $deg(c(\mathbf P^1))=d$, (2) further more all such $c$ are immersions satisfying \begin{equation} N_{c(\mathbf P^1)/ X_3}\simeq \mathcal O_{\mathbf P^1}(-1)\oplus \mathcal O_{\mathbf P^1}(-1).
In this paper we show that conifold transitions between Calabi-Yau 3-folds can be used for the construction of mirror manifolds and for the computation of the instanton numbers of rational curves on complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds in Grassmannians. Using a natural degeneration of Grassmannians $G(k,n)$ to some Gorenstein toric Fano varieties $P(k,n)$ with conifolds singularities which was recently described by Sturmfels, we suggest an explicit mirror construction for Calabi-Yau complete intersections $X \subset G(k,n)$ of arbitrary dimension. Our mirror construction is consistent with…
We establish the equality of stringy $E$-functions for double mirror Calabi-Yau complete intersections in the varieties of skew forms of rank at most $2k$ and at most $n-1-2k$ on a vector space of odd dimension $n$.
In this paper we give gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) realizations of a number of geometries not previously presented in GLSMs. We begin by describing GLSM realizations of maps including Veronese and Segre embeddings, which can be applied to give GLSMs explicitly describing constructions such as the intersection of one hypersurface with the image under some map of another. We also discuss GLSMs for intersections of Grassmannians and Pfaffians with one another, and with their images under various maps, which sometimes form exotic constructions of Calabi-Yaus, as well as GLSMs for other exotic …
In this paper we study intersections of quadrics, components of the hypersurface in Grassmannian $Gr(3, \CC^n)$ introduced in \cite{SoSuSi}. This lead to an alternative statement and proof of Pappus's Theorem retrieving Pappus's and Hesse configurations of lines as special points in complex projective Grassmannian. This new connection is obtained through a third purely combinatorial object, the intersection lattice of Discriminantal arrangement.
We introduce the semi-infinite category of sheaves on the affine Grassmannian, and construct a particular object in it, which we call the the semi-infinite intersection cohomology sheaf. We relate it to several other entities naturally appearing in the geometric Langlands theory.
We prove that any three-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariant on a type A Grassmannian is equal to a classical intersection number on a two-step flag variety. We also give symplectic and orthogonal analogues of this result; in these cases the two-step flag variety is replaced by a sub-maximal isotropic Grassmannian. Our theorems are applied, in type A, to formulate a conjectural quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule, and in the other classical Lie types, to obtain new proofs of the main structure theorems for the quantum cohomology of Lagrangian and orthogonal Grassmannians.
For a nonsingular projective variety $X$, the virtual Tevelev degree in Gromov-Witten theory is defined as the virtual degree of the morphism from $M_{g,n}(X,d)$ to the product $M_{g,n} \times X^n$. After proving a simple formula for the virtual Tevelev degree in the (small) quantum cohomology ring of $X$ using the quantum Euler class, we provide several exact calculations for flag varieties and complete intersections. In the cominuscule case (including Grassmannians, Lagrangian Grassmannians, and maximal orthogonal Grassmannians), the virtual Tevelev degrees are calculated in terms of the eig…
The affine Grassmannian associated to a reductive group $\mathbf{G}$ is an affine analogue of the usual flag varieties. It is a rich source of Poisson varieties and their symplectic resolutions. These spaces are examples of conical symplectic resolutions dual to the Nakajima quiver varieties. In this work, we study their quantum connection. We use the stable envelopes of D. Maulik and A. Okounkov[arXiv:1211.1287] to write an explicit formula for this connection. The classical part of the multiplication comes from [arXiv:2210.09967]. The computation of the purely quantum part is done based on t…
The rank 4 locus of a general skew-symmetric 7x7 matrix gives the pfaffian variety in P^20 which is not defined as a complete intersection. Intersecting this with a general P^6 gives a Calabi-Yau manifold. An orbifold construction seems to give the 1-parameter mirror-family of this. However, corresponding to two points in the 1-parameter family of complex structures, both with maximally unipotent monodromy, are two different mirror-maps: one corresponding to the general pfaffian section, the other to a general intersection of G(2,7) in P^20 with a P^13. Apparently, the pfaffian and G(2,7) sect…
Let $\mathbf{M}_n$ be the Simpson compactification of twisted ideal sheaves $\mathcal{I}_{L,Q}(1)$ where $Q$ is a rank $4$ quardric hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ and $L$ is a linear subspace of dimension $n-2$. This paper calculates the intersection Poincaré polynomial of $\mathbf{M}_n$ using Kirwan's desingularization method. We obtain the intersection Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space for one-dimensional sheaves on del Pezzo surfaces of degree $\geq 8$ by considering wall-crossings of stable pairs and complexes.
Fano varieties are subvarieties of the Grassmannian whose points parametrize linear subspaces contained in a given projective variety. These expository notes give an account of results on Fano varieties of complete intersections, with a view toward an application in machine learning. The prerequisites have been kept to a minimum in order to make these results accessible to a broad audience.
We describe sequences of blowups of $\overline{M}_{0,5} \times \overline{M}_{0,5}$ and $\mathbf{P}^2 \times \mathbf{P}^2$ yielding a small resolution of the stable pair compactification $\overline{M}(3,6)$ of the moduli space $M(3,6)$ of six lines in $\mathbf{P}^2$. These blowup sequences can be viewed, respectively, as generalizations of Keel's and Kapranov's constructions of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$. We use these blowup sequences to describe the intersection theory of $\overline{M}(3,6)$. In particular, we show that the Chow ring of any small resolution of $\overline{M}(3,6)$ has a presentation …
We propose Picard-Fuchs equations for periods of nonabelian mirrors in this paper. The number of parameters in our Picard-Fuchs equations is the rank of the gauge group of the nonabelian GLSM, which is eventually reduced to the actual number of Kähler parameters. These Picard-Fuchs equations are concise and novel. We justify our proposal by reproducing existing mathematical results, namely Picard-Fuchs equations of Grassmannians and Calabi-Yau manifolds as complete intersections in Grassmannians. Furthermore, our approach can be applied to other nonabelian GLSMs, so we compute Picard-Fuchs equ…
Given a complex projective algebraic variety, write H(X) for its cohomology with complex coefficients and IH(X) for its Intersection cohomology. We first show that, under some fairly general conditions, the canonical map H(X)\to IH(X) is injective. Now let Gr = G((z))/G[[z]] be the loop Grassmannian for a complex semisimple group G, and let X be the closure of a G[[z]]-orbit in Gr. We prove, using the general result above, a conjecture of D. Peterson describing the cohomology algebra H(X) in terms of the centralizer of the principal nilpotent in the Langlands dual of Lie(G). In the last sectio…
The Hilbert scheme $\mathbf{Hilb}_{p(t)}^{n}$ parametrizes closed subschemes and families of closed subschemes in the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ with a fixed Hilbert polynomial $p(t)$. It is classically realized as a closed subscheme of a Grassmannian or a product of Grassmannians. In this paper we consider schemes over a field $k$ of characteristic zero and we present a new proof of the existence of the Hilbert scheme as a subscheme of the Grassmannian $\mathbf{Gr}_{p(r)}^{N(r)}$, where $N(r)= h^0 (\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^n}(r))$. Moreover, we exhibit explicit equations defining it in th…
In this note we construct conifold transitions between several Calabi-Yau threefolds given by Pfaffians in weighted projective spaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds appearing as complete intersections in toric varieties. We use the obtained results to predict mirrors following ideas of \cite{BCKS, Batsmalltoricdegen}. In particular we consider the family of Calabi--Yau threefolds of degree 25 in $\mathbb{P}^9$ obtained as a transverse intersection of two Grassmannians in their Plucker embeddings.
Vakil studied the intersection theory of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian in a very direct way: he degenerated the intersection of a Schubert variety X_mu and opposite Schubert variety X^nu to a union {X^lambda}, with repetition. This degeneration proceeds in stages, and along the way he met a collection of more complicated subvarieties, which he identified as the closures of certain locally closed sets. We show that Vakil's varieties are _positroid varieties_, which in particular shows they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined by the vanishing of Plüc…
We prove that the GKZ $\mathscr{D}$-module $\mathcal{M}_{A}^β$ arising from Calabi--Yau fractional complete intersections in toric varieties is complete, i.e., all the solutions to $\mathcal{M}_{A}^β$ are period integrals. This particularly implies that $\mathcal{M}_{A}^β$ is equivalent to the Picard--Fuchs system. As an application, we give explicit formulae of the period integrals of Calabi--Yau threefolds coming from double covers of $\mathbf{P}^{3}$ branch over eight hyperplanes in general position.
Let $k \subset K$ be an extension of fields, and let $A \subset M_{n}(K)$ be a $k$-algebra. We study parameter spaces of $m$-dimensional subspaces of $K^{n}$ which are invariant under $A$. The space $\mathbb{F}_{A}(m,n)$, whose $R$-rational points are $A$-invariant, free rank $m$ summands of $R^{n}$, is well known. We construct a distinct parameter space, $\mathbb{G}_{A}(m,n)$, which is a fiber product of a Grassmannian and the projectivization of a vector space. We then study the intersection $\mathbb{F}_{A}(m,n) \cap \mathbb{G}_{A}(m,n)$, which we denote by $\mathbb{H}_{A}(m,n)$. Under suita…
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the {\em cyclic shifts} of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, and Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subs…
