We introduce and initiate the investigation of a general class of 4d, N=1 quiver gauge theories whose Lagrangian is defined by a bipartite graph on a Riemann surface, with or without boundaries. We refer to such class of theories as Bipartite Field Theories (BFTs). BFTs underlie a wide spectrum of interesting physical systems, including: D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds, their mirror configurations of D6-branes, cluster integrable systems in (0+1) dimensions and leading singularities in scattering amplitudes for N=4 SYM. While our discussion is fully general, we focus on models that are relevant for scattering amplitudes. We investigate the BFT perspective on graph modifications, the emergence of Calabi-Yau manifolds (which arise as the master and moduli spaces of BFTs), the translation between square moves in the graph and Seiberg duality and the identification of dual theories by means of the underlying Calabi-Yaus, the phenomenon of loop reduction and the interpretation of the boundary operator for cells in the positive Grassmannian as higgsing in the BFT. We develop a technique based on generalized Kasteleyn matrices that permits an efficient determination of the Calabi-Yau geometries associated to arbitrary graphs. Our techniques allow us to go beyond the planar limit by both increasing the number of boundaries of the graphs and the genus of the underlying Riemann surface. Our investigation suggests a central role for Calabi-Yau manifolds in the context of leading singularities, whose full scope is yet to be uncovered.
We develop tools for determining the gauge theory resulting from a configuration of Type IIB D3-branes probing a non-compact, toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold, in the presence of additional flavor D7-branes with general embeddings. Two main ingredients of our approach are dimer models and mirror symmetry. D7-branes with general embeddings are obtained by recombination of elementary D7-brane constituents. These tools are then used to engineer a large set of Bipartite Field Theories, a class of 4d, N=1 quantum field theories defined by bipartite graphs on bordered Riemann surfaces. Several explicit examp…
We study D-brane instantons in systems of D3-branes at toric CY 3-fold singularities. The instanton effect can be described as a backreaction modifying the geometry of the mirror configuration, in which the breaking of $U(1)$ symmetries by the instanton translates into the recombination of gauge D-branes, which also directly generates the instanton-induced charged field theory operator. In this paper we describe the D-brane instanton backreaction in terms of a combinatorial operation in the bipartite dimer diagram of the original theory. Interestingly, the resulting theory is a general Biparti…
We provide a string theory embedding for N = 1 superconformal field theories defined by bipartite graphs inscribed on a disk. We realize these theories by exploiting the close connection with related N = 2 generalized (A_(k-1), A_(n-1)) Argyres-Douglas theories. The N = 1 theory is obtained from spacetime filling D5-branes wrapped on an algebraic curve and NS5-branes wrapped on special Lagrangians of C^2 which intersect along the BPS flow lines of the corresponding N = 2 Argyres-Douglas theory. Dualities of the N = 1 field theory follow from geometric deformations of the brane configuration wh…
A new way of computing scattering amplitudes in a certain very important QFT (N=4 SYM) has recently been developed, in which an algebraic structure called the positive Grassmannian plays a very important role. The mathematics of the positive Grassmannian involve, among other things, bipartite graphs, which also appear in the formulation of a certain class of conformal field theories that are currently being generalized into Bipartite Field Theories (BFT). The fact that the same structures appear in two such different realms of physics suggests a deeper connection between the two that is yet to…
We consider the dynamics of a single probe brane on various cosmological brane backgrounds. The on-shell condition of the static probe brane leads to the supersymmetric intersection rules for static BPS configurations, though the cosmological backgrounds do not preserve any supersymmetries. This is a remarkable feature associated with the cosmological backgrounds because in the static background the on-shell condition of the static brane gives no constraint on the brane configuration. Furthermore, it follows that under this condition there is no velocity-independent force for the probe brane e…
We study non-supersymmetric orbifold singularities from the point of view of D-brane probes. We present a description of the decay of such singularities from considerations of the toric geometry of the probe branes.
We study the relativistic dynamics of brane probes in singular warped spacetimes and establish limits for such analysis. The behavior of the semiclassical brane probe wave functions implies that unitarity boundary conditions can be imposed at the singularity.
We study the dynamics and thermodynamics of a probe D3-brane in the rotating D3-brane background and in its extremal limit, which is a multicenter configuration of D3-branes distributed uniformly on a disc. In the extremal background, if the angular momentum of the probe does not vanish, the probe is always bounced back at some turning point. When its angular momentum vanishes, in the disc plane, the probe will be captured at the edge of the disc; in the hyperplane orthogonal to the disc, the probe will be absorbed at the center of the disc. In the non-extremal background, if the probe is in t…
This paper describes D-brane probes of theories arising in abelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) describing branched double covers and noncommutative resolutions thereof, via nonperturbative effects rather than as the critical locus of a superpotential. As these theories can be described as IR limits of Landau-Ginzburg models, technically this paper is an exercise in utilizing (sheafy) matrix factorizations. For Landau-Ginzburg models which are believed to flow in the IR to smooth branched double covers, our D-brane probes recover the structure of the branched double cover (and flat nontr…
By working with the free energy for the type II supergravity near-horizon solution of N coincident non-extremal Dp-branes we study the transitions among the non-conformal Dp-brane system, the perturbative super Yang-Mills theory and a certain system associated with M theory. We derive a relation between this free energy and the action of a Dp-brane probe in the N Dp-brane background. Constructing the free energy for the five dimensional black hole labeled by the D1-brane and D5-brane charges we find the similar relation between it and the action of a D1 or D5 brane probe in the D1 + D5 brane b…
In many instances of holographic correspondences between a d dimensional boundary theory and a d+1 dimensional bulk, a direct argument in the boundary theory implies that there must exist a simple and precise relation between the Euclidean on-shell action of a (d-1)-brane probing the bulk geometry and the Euclidean gravitational bulk action. This relation is crucial for the consistency of holography, yet it is non-trivial from the bulk perspective. In particular, we show that it relies on a nice isoperimetric inequality that must be satisfied in a large class of Poincaré-Einstein spaces. Remar…
We consider the mirage cosmology by an unstable probe brane whose action is represented by BDI action with tachyon. We study how the presence of tachyon affects the evolution of the brane inflation. At the early stage of the brane inflation, the tachyon kinetic term can play an important role in curing the superluminal expansion in mirage cosmology.
This paper is devoted to the study of the dynamics of the Dp-branes, F-strings and M-branes in the background of the system of two stacks of fivebranes in type IIA, IIB and M theory that intersect on the line.
We describe how mirror symmetry of three-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories can be used to determine the theory on the world-volume of a D2-brane probe of manifolds with G_2 holonomy. This is a much shortened companion paper to hep-th/0202126.
We study thermalization on rotating probe branes in AdS_5 x S^5 background in the presence of constant external electric and magnetic fields. In the AdS/CFT framework this corresponds to thermalization in the flavour sector in field theory. The horizon appears on the worldvolume of the probe brane due to its rotation in one of the sphere directions. For both electric and magnetic fields the behaviour of the temperature is independent of the probe brane dimension. We also study the open string metric and the fluctuations of the probe brane in such a set-up. We show that the temperatures obtaine…
We study probe M5-branes in N=1 AdS5 solutions of M-theory that arise from M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface. Using the BPS condition from kappa-symmetry, we classify supersymmetric probe M5-branes that extend along all of AdS5 and intersect the Riemann surface at points. These can be viewed as punctures in the dual N=1 superconformal field theories. We find M5-branes that correspond to the two types of simple punctures previously studied in field theory. In addition, when the central charge is rational, we find a new class of M5-branes with a moduli space that includes two internal dimen…
We consider probe p-branes and Dp-branes dynamics in D-dimensional string theory backgrounds of general type. Unified description for the tensile and tensionless branes is used. We obtain exact solutions of their equations of motion and constraints in static gauge as well as in more general gauges. Their dynamics in the whole space-time is also analysed and exact solutions are found.
In this article we present a novel set of solutions of the probe brane system consisting of Nf-D5 probe branes embedded in the near-horizon geometry generated by Nc-D3 branes, with the D5 worldvolume U(1) gauge fields turned on. Our system is holographically dual to a supersymmetric defect field theory at finite density in non-trivial vacua. We find that a large class of vacua turns out to satisfy a no-force condition, even with supersymmetry explicitly broken by the finite density; our solutions include configuration in which charge separates from the horizon and is instead carried by probe b…
We study the worldvolume supersymmetric gauge theory of M-branes probing backgrounds corresponding to wrapped M5-branes. In the case of M5-branes wrapping a 2-cycle in two-dimensional complex space, we use M2-brane probes to compute the BPS spectra of the corresponding N=2 gauge theory as well as M5-brane probes to calculate field theory parameters such as the gauge coupling, theta angle and complex scalar moduli space metric. This background describes a large class of Hanany-Witten type models when dimensionally reduced to Type IIA 10d string theory. We calculate the instanton action using a …
We study supersymmetric embeddings of D-brane probes of different dimensionality in the AdS_5xL^{abc} background of type IIB string theory. In the case of D3-branes, we recover the known three-cycles dual to the dibaryonic operators of the gauge theory and we also find a new family of supersymmetric embeddings. Supersymmetric configurations of D5-branes, representing fractional branes, and of spacetime filling D7-branes (which can be used to add flavor) are also found. Stable non supersymmetric configurations corresponding to fat strings and domain walls are found as well.
We perform holographic renormalization for probe branes in AdS_5 x S^5. We show that for four known probe D-branes wrapping an AdS_m x S^n, the counterterms needed to render the action finite are identical to those for the free, massive scalar in AdS_m plus counterterms for the renormalization of the volume of AdS_m. The four cases we consider are the probe D7, two different probe D5's and a probe D3. In the D7 case there are scheme-dependent finite counterterms that can be fixed by supersymmetry.
We find the range of parameters for which the open string physics on probe Dq-branes in the near-horizon geometry of Dp-branes decouples from gravity, and is well-approximated by a (q+1)-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Higgs theory on a rigid curved spacetime. We study the vacua of these theories, which include moduli spaces of instantons, monopoles, and vortices. This intricate structure is made possible through couplings to the background Ramond-Ramond flux. The probe brane theories we study provide holographic descriptions of defects in dual field theories.
Recently a brane world perspective on the cosmological constant and the hierarchy problems was presented. Here, we elaborate on some aspects of that particular scenario and discuss the stability of the stationary brane solution and the dynamics of a probe brane. Even though the brane is unstable under a small perturbation from its stationary position, such instability is harmless when the 4-D cosmological constant is very small, as is the case of our universe. One may also introduce radion stabilizing potentials in a more realistic scenario.
This thesis focuses on the derivation of holographic backgrounds from the field theory side, without using any supergravity equations of motion. Instead, we rely on the addition of probe D-branes to the stack of D-branes generating the background. From the field theory description of the probe branes, one can compute an effective action for the probes (in a suitable low-energy/near-horizon limit) by integrating out the background branes. Comparing this action with the generic probe D-brane action then allows to determine the holographic background dual to the considered field theory vacuum. In…
Employing Sen's picture of BPS states on a 3-brane probe world volume field theory in a F-theory background. we determine some selection rules for the allowed spectrum in massless $N_{f}\leq 4$ SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory. The spectrum for any $N_f \leq 4$ is consistent with previous conjectures and analysis.
At zero temperature, the charge current operator appears to be conserved, within linear response, in certain holographic probe brane models of strange metals. At small but finite temperature, we analytically show that the weak non-conservation of this current leads to both a collective "zero sound" mode and a Drude peak in the electrical conductivity. This simultaneously resolves two outstanding puzzles about probe brane theories. The nonlinear dynamics of the current operator itself appears qualitatively different.
Brane tilings describe Lagrangians (vector multiplets, chiral multiplets, and the superpotential) of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. These theories, written in terms of a bipartite graph on a torus, correspond to worldvolume theories on $N$ D$3$-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularity. A pair of permutations compactly encapsulates the data necessary to specify a brane tiling. We show that geometric consistency for brane tilings, which ensures that the corresponding quantum field theories are well behaved, imposes constraints on the pair of permut…
We study Type IIB supergravity solutions with spacetime of the form $AdS_6\times S^2$ warped over a Riemann surface $Σ$, where $Σ$ includes punctures around which the supergravity fields have non-trivial $SL(2,R)$ monodromy. Solutions without monodromy have a compelling interpretation as near-horizon limits of $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs, and the punctures have been interpreted as additional 7-branes in the web. In this work we provide further support for this interpretation and clarify several aspects of the identification of the supergravity solutions with brane webs. To further support the identif…
We discuss the dynamics and thermodynamics of particle and D-brane probes moving in non-extremal black hole/brane backgrounds. When a probe falls from asymptotic infinity to the horizon, it transforms its potential energy into heat, $TdS$, which is absorbed by the black hole in a way consistent with the first law of thermodynamics. We show that the same remains true in the near-horizon limit, for BPS probes only, with the BPS probe moving from AdS infinity to the horizon. This is a quantitative indication that the brane-probe reaching the horizon corresponds to thermalization in gauge theory. …
We consider probe p-branes dynamics in string theory backgrounds of general type. We use an action, which interpolates between Nambu-Goto and Polyakov type actions. This allows us to give a unified description for the tensile and tensionless branes. Firstly, we perform our analysis in the frequently used static gauge. Then, we obtain exact brane solutions in more general gauges. The same approach is used to study the Dirichlet p-brane dynamics and here exact solutions are also found. As an illustration, we apply our results to the brane world scenario in the framework of the mirage cosmology a…
We give a prescription for calculating the entanglement entropy in holographic probe brane systems by systematically taking the leading order backreaction of the probe brane into account. We find a simple compact double integral formula, which is insensitive to many details of the backreaction, most notably the internal space or the non-metric fields sourced by the probe. We validate our method by comparing to exact results in solvable toy models. We also determine the entanglement entropies for a sphere and a strip in the top-down D3/D7 and D3/D5 system. For the sphere the entanglement entrop…
Recently Banks, Douglas and Seiberg have shown that the world volume theory of a three brane of the type IIB theory in the presence of a configuration of four Dirichlet seven branes and an orientifold plane is described by an N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory with four quark flavours in 3+1 dimensions. In this note we show how the BPS mass formula for N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory arises from masses of open strings stretched between the three brane and the seven brane along appropriate geodesics.
The method of probe brane is the powerful one to obtain the effective action living on the probe brane from supergravity. We apply this method to the unstable brane systems, and understand the tachyon condensation in the context of the open/closed duality. First, we probe the parallel coincident branes by the anti-brane. In this case, the mass squared of the stretched string becomes negative infinite in the decoupling limit. So that the dual open string field theory is difficult to understand. Next, we probe parallel coincident branes by a brane intersecting with an angle. In this case, the st…
The 256 dimensional M2-brane multiplet contains solitons of many different intrinsic spins. Using the broken supersymmetry transformations of the M2-brane, we find supergravity solutions which explicitly display these spins. This amounts to quantizing the fermionic zero modes and computing the back reaction on the metric and gauge potential. These spacetime fields are therefore operator valued and acquire a conventional classical meaning only after taking expectations in given BPS states. Our spinning spacetimes are not of the standard Kerr form -- there is a non-vanishing gravitino. Neverthel…
We derive the spacetime superalgebras explicitly from ``test'' p-brane actions in a D-8-brane (i.e. a massive IIA) background to the lowest order in $θ$ via canonical formalism, and show that the forms of the superalgebras are the same as those in all the other D-brane (i.e. massless IIA) backgrounds, that is, they are indifferent to the presence of the Chern-Simons terms which are proportional to the mass and added to the D-brane actions in the case of massive IIA backgrounds. Thus, we can say that all the D-brane background solutions including a D-8-brane are on equal footing from the viewpo…
In hep-th/0412322, Gaiotto, Strominger and Yin proposed a novel way of counting black hole microstates by counting the quantum mechanical ground states of probe branes placed in the near-horizon black hole background. We discuss the generalization of this proposal to the case of two-charge D0-D4 `small' black holes in type IIA. We also describe the construction of BPS D-brane probes in the near-horizon region of the 2-charge D1-D5 system in type IIB. Based on hep-th/0505176, hep-th/0607150.
We demonstrate that world-volume actions describing probe branes in anti de Sitter space have an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra that is reminiscent of Yangian symmetry. Two essential ingredients are responsible for this symmetry. The first is an inversion symmetry of anti de Sitter space. The second is the compensating gauge transformations that are required to properly describe global symmetries after gauge fixing the general coordinate invariance.
We overview the main configurations of D-brane probes in the AdS_5 x X^5 background of type IIB string theory (X^5 being a Sasaki-Einstein manifold), and examine their most salient features from the point of view of the dual quiver superconformal field theory.

Supersymmetric zero-brane and one-brane probes in the squashed $AdS_2\times S^3$ near-horizon geometry of the BMPV black hole are studied. Supersymmetric zero-brane probes stabilized by orbital angular momentum on the $S^3$ are found and shown to saturate a BPS bound. We also find supersymmetric one-brane probes which have momentum and winding around a $U(1)_L\times U(1)_R$ torus in the $S^3$ and in some cases are static.
We study the effect of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces on D-brane probe physics. The case of elliptically fibered K3 surfaces is considered in detail. In many cases, mirror can transform a singular fiber of Kodaira's type ADE into sets of singular fibers of type I_1 (II) with equal total Euler number, but vanishing contribution to the Picard number of the mirror surface. This provides a geometric model of quantum splitting phenomena. Mirror for three dimensional gauge theories, interchanging Fayet-Iliopoulos and mass terms, is also briefly discussed.
We consider a D-brane probe in unstable string background associated with flux branes. The twist in spacetime metric reponsible for the supersymmetry breaking is shown to manifest itself in mixing of open Wilson lines with the phases of some adjoint matter fields, resulting in a nonlocal and nonsupersymmetric form of Yang-Mills theory as the probe dynamics. This provides a setup where one can study fate of a large class of unstable closed string theories that include as a limit type 0 theories and various orbifolds of type II and type 0 theories. We discuss the limit of ${\bf C}/Z_n$ orbifold …
We consider type IIB string theory on a seven dimensional orbifold with holonomy in G2. The motivation is to use D1-branes as probes of the geometry. The low energy theory on the D1-brane is a sigma-model with two real supercharges (N = (1,1) in two dimensional language). We study in detail the closed and open string sectors and propose a coupling of the twisted fields to the brane that modifies the vacuum moduli space so that the singularity at the origin is removed. Instead of coming from D-terms, which are not present here, the modification comes from a ``twisted'' mass term for the seven s…

This paper investigates a new experimental framework to test the braneworld hypothesis. Recent theoretical results have shown the possibility of matter exchange between branes under the influence of suitable magnetic vector potentials. It is shown that the required conditions might be achieved with present-day technology. The experiment uses a source of pulsed and coherent electromagnetic radiation and relies on the Hansch frequency comb technique well-known in ultrahigh-precision spectroscopy. A good matter candidate for testing the hypothesis is a polarized ultracold neutron gas for which th…
We study RR charge cancellation consistency conditions in string compactifications with open string sectors, by introducing D-brane probes in the configuration. We show that uncancelled charges manifest as chiral gauge anomalies in the world-volume of suitable probes. RR tadpole cancellation can therefore be described as the consistency of the effective compactified theory not just in the vacuum, but also in all topological sectors (presence of D-brane probes). The result explains why tadpole cancellation is usually much stronger than anomaly cancellation of the compactified theory (in the vac…
The notion of generalized gravitational entropy introduced by Lewkowycz and Maldacena allows, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, to calculate CFT entanglement entropies. We adapt the method to the case where flavor branes are present and treated in the probe approximation. This allows to calculate the leading flavor correction to the CFT entanglement entropy from the on-shell action of the probe, while dealing with the backreaction is avoided entirely and from the outset. As an application we give concise derivations for the contribution of massless and massive flavor degrees of freedom to the en…
In this paper, we investigate the dynamics and the evolution of the scale factor of a probe Dp-brane which move in the background of source Dp-branes. Action of the probe brane is described by the Born-Infeld action and the interaction with the background R-R field. When the probe brane moves away from the source branes, it expands by power law, whose index depends on the dimension of the brane. If the energy density of the gauge field on the brane is subdominant, the expansion is decelerating irrespective of the dimension of the brane. On the other hand, when the probe brane is a Nambu-Goto b…
We consider a one-brane probe in the presence of a five-dimensional black hole in the classical limit. The velocity-dependent force on a slowly-moving probe is characterized by a metric on the probe moduli space. This metric is computed for large black holes using low-energy supergravity, and for small black holes using D-brane gauge theory. The results are compared.
We consider a probe codimension-2 brane inflation scenario in a warped six-dimensional flux compactification. Our background model is Salam-Sezgin gauged supergravity with codimension-2 brane sources, which preserve N=1 supersymmetry. The model has a modulus, which is stabilised by means of a cap regularisation of the codimension-2 singularities, with appropriate dilaton potentials on the ring interface of the caps with the bulk. We discuss the cosmological evolution of the world-volume of a probe codimension-2 brane when it moves along the radial direction of the internal space. In order to h…
Using D2-brane probes, we study various properties of M-theory on singular, non-compact manifolds of G_2 and Spin(7) holonomy. We derive mirror pairs of N=1 supersymmetric three-dimensional gauge theories, and apply this technique to realize exceptional holonomy manifolds as both Coulomb and Higgs branches of the D2-brane world-volume theory. We derive a ``G_2 quotient construction'' of non-compact manifolds which admit a metric of G_2 holonomy. We further discuss the moduli space of such manifolds, including the structure of geometrical transitions in each case. For completeness, we also incl…
We study the supersymmetric embeddings of different D-brane probes in the AdS_5 x T^{1,1} geometry. The main tool employed is kappa symmetry and the cases studied include D3-, D5- and D7-branes. We find a family of three-cycles of the T^{1,1} space over which a D3-brane can be wrapped supersymmetrically and we determine the field content of the corresponding gauge theory duals. Supersymmetric configurations of D5-branes wrapping a two-cycle and of spacetime filling D7-branes are also found. The configurations in which the entire T^{1,1} space is wrapped by a D5-brane (baryon vertex) and a D7-b…
We compute the holographic entanglement entropy contribution from planar two-dimensional defects in six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ superconformal field theory, holographically dual to probe M2- and M5-branes in $AdS_7 \times S^4$. In particular, we test the viability of the universal contribution of the defect to entanglement entropy as a candidate $C$-function. We find that this coefficient is not monotonic under defect renormalization group flows triggered by the vacuum expectation value of a marginal operator. Another candidate $C$-function, the on-shell action inside the entanglement …
A great deal of progress has been recently made in the study of holography for non-conformal branes. Considering the near-horizon limit of backgrounds generated by such branes, we discuss the holographic renormalization of probe D-branes in these geometries. More specifically, we discuss in some detail systems with a codimension-one defect. For this class of systems, the mode which describes the probe branes wrapping a maximal 2-sphere in the transverse space behaves like a free massive scalar propagating in a higher-dimensional (asymptotically) AdS_{q+1}-space. The counterterms needed are the…
We study the dynamics of the probe fundamental string in the field background of the partially localized supergravity solution for the fundamental string ending on Dp-brane. We separately analyze the probe dynamics for its motion along the worldvolume direction and the transverse direction of the source Dp-brane. We compare the dynamics of the probe along the Dp-brane worldvolume direction to the BIon dynamics.
