We show that homologically projectively dual varieties for Grassmannians Gr(2,6) and Gr(2,7) are given by certain noncommutative resolutions of singularities of the corresponding Pfaffian varieties. As an application we describe the derived categories of linear sections of these Grassmannians and Pfaffians. In particular, we show that
(1) the derived category of a Pfaffian cubic 4-fold admits a semiorthogonal decompositions consisting of 3 exceptional line bundles, and of the derived category of a K3-surface;
(2) mutually orthogonal Calabi-Yau linear sections of Gr(2,7) and of the corresponding Pfaffian variety are derived equivalent.
We also conjecture a rationality criterion for cubic 4-folds in terms of their derived categories.
We describe the Kuznetsov component of the Plücker embedding of the Grassmannian as a category of matrix factorizations on an noncommutative crepant resolution (NCCR) of the affine cone of the Grassmannian. We also extend this to a full homological projective dual (HPD) statement for the Plücker embedding. The first part is finding and describing the NCCR, which is also of independent interest. We extend results of Špenko and Van den Bergh to prove the existence of an NCCR for the affine cone of the Grassmannian. We then relate this NCCR to a categorical resolution of Kuznetsov. Deforming thes…
We introduce a notion of Homological Projective Duality for smooth algebraic varieties in dual projective spaces, a homological extension of the classical projective duality. If algebraic varieties $X$ and $Y$ in dual projective spaces are Homologically Projectively Dual, then we prove that the orthogonal linear sections of $X$ and $Y$ admit semiorthogonal decompositions with an equivalent nontrivial component. In particular, it follows that triangulated categories of singularities of these sections are equivalent. We also investigate Homological Projective Duality for projectivizations of vec…
We provide a geometric approach to constructing Lefschetz collections and Landau-Ginzburg Homological Projective Duals from a variation of Geometric Invariant Theory quotients. This approach yields homological projective duals for Veronese embeddings in the setting of Landau Ginzburg models. Our results also extend to a relative Homological Projective Duality framework.
We generalize Kuznetsov's theory of homological projective duality to the setting of noncommutative algebraic geometry. Simultaneously, we develop the theory over general base schemes, and remove the usual smoothness, properness, and transversality hypotheses.
We show that over an algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2, homological projective duality for smooth quadric hypersurfaces and for double covers of projective spaces branched over smooth quadric hypersurfaces is a combination of two operations: one interchanges a quadric hypersurface with its classical projective dual and the other interchanges a quadric hypersurface with the double cover branched along it.
We provide homological foundations to establish conjectural homological projective dualities between 1) S^2 P^3 and the double cover of the projective 9-space branched along the symmetric determinantal quartic, and 2) S^2 P^4 and the double cover of the symmetric determinantal quintic in the projective 14-space branched along the symmetric determinantal locus of rank at most 3.
We introduce the notion of a categorical cone, which provides a categorification of the classical cone over a projective variety, and use our work on categorical joins to describe its behavior under homological projective duality. In particular, our construction provides well-behaved categorical resolutions of singular quadrics, which we use to obtain an explicit quadratic version of the main theorem of homological projective duality. As applications, we prove the duality conjecture for Gushel-Mukai varieties, and produce interesting examples of conifold transitions between noncommutative and …
In this note we describe the image of $\PP^2$ in $ Gr(2, \CC^{4})$ under a morphism given by a rank two vector bundle on $\PP^2$ with Chern classes $(2,2).$
We reprove Kuznetsov's "fundamental theorem of homological projective duality" using LG models and variation of GIT stability. This extends the validity of the theorem from smooth varieties to nice subcategories of smooth quotient stacks, and moreover shows that the line bundles polarising the varieties in HP duality do not have to be globally generated. The proof combines ideas from Kuznetsov's original proof with ideas from work of Ballard-Deliu-Favero-Isik-Katzarkov.
The Segre cubic and Castelnuovo-Richmond quartic are two projectively dual hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$, with a long and rich history starting in the 19th century. We will explain how Kuznetsov's theory of homological projective duality lifts this projective duality to a relationship between the derived category of a small resolution of the Segre cubic and a small resolution of the Coble fourfold, the double cover of $\mathbb{P}^4$ ramified along the Castelnuovo-Richmond quartic. Homological projective duality then provides a description of the derived categories of linear sections, which w…
In the first part of the thesis, we study a classical invariant of projective varieties, the secant defectivity. The second part is devoted to modern algebraic geometry, we study the birational geometry of blow-ups of Grassmannians at points.
We study projective homogeneous varieties under an action of a projective unitary group (of outer type). We are especially interested in the case of (unitary) grassmannians of totally isotropic subspaces of a hermitian form over a field, the main result saying that these grassmannians are 2-incompressible if the hermitian form is generic. Applications to orthogonal grassmannians are provided.
We study embeddability of superschemes into $Π$-projective spaces and into supergrassmannians $G(1|1,n|n)$. We give some criteria based on the relation with ${\mathbb{A}}^{0|1}$-torsors and ${\mathbb{A}}^{0|1}$-fibrations. We also prove the existence of nice quotients for free actions of ${\mathbb{A}}^{0|1}$ on superschemes.
We give an explicit parametrization of the Hilbert schemes of rational curves C in P^n having a given splitting type of the restricted tangent bundle from P^n to C. The adopted technique uses the description of such curves as projections of a rational normal curve from a suitable linear vertex and a classification of those vertices that correspond to the required splitting type of the restricted tangent bundle. This classification involves the study of a suitable PGL(2) action on the relevant Grassmannian variety.
We introduce the notion of a categorical join, which can be thought of as a categorification of the classical join of two projective varieties. This notion is in the spirit of homological projective duality, which categorifies classical projective duality. Our main theorem says that the homological projective dual category of the categorical join is naturally equivalent to the categorical join of the homological projective dual categories. This categorifies the classical version of this assertion and has many applications, including a nonlinear version of the main theorem of homological projec…
In this paper, we first introduce geometric operations for linear categories, and as a consequence generalize Orlov's blow up formula [O04] to possibly singular local complete intersection centres. Second, we introduce refined blowing up of linear category along base--locus, and show that this operation is dual to taking linear section. Finally, as an application we produce examples of Calabi--Yau manifolds which admits Calabi--Yau categories fibrations over projective spaces.
We show that the tropical projective Grassmannian of planes is homeomorphic to a closed subset of the analytic Grassmannian in Berkovich's sense by constructing a continuous section to the tropicalization map. Our main tool is an explicit description of the algebraic coordinate rings of the toric strata of the Grassmannian. We determine the fibers of the tropicalization map and compute the initial degenerations of all the toric strata. As a consequence, we prove that the tropical multiplicities of all points in the tropical projective Grassmannian are equal to one. Finally, we determine a piec…
Homological Projective duality (HP-duality) theory, introduced by Kuznetsov [42], is one of the most powerful frameworks in the homological study of algebraic geometry. The main result (HP-duality theorem) of the theory gives complete descriptions of bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves of (dual) linear sections of HP-dual varieties. We show the theorem also holds for more general intersections beyond linear sections. More explicitly, for a given HP-dual pair $(X,Y)$, then analogue of HP-duality theorem holds for their intersections with another HP-dual pair $(S,T)$, provided that th…
We prove the arithmetic Hodge index and hard Lefschetz conjectures for the Grassmannian $G=G(2,N)$ parametrizing lines in projective space, for the natural arithmetic Lefschetz operator defined via the Plücker embedding of $G$ in projective space. The analysis of the Hodge index inequalities involves estimates on certain Racah polynomials.
The Grassmannians of lines in projective N-space, G(1,N), are embedded by way of the Pl"ucker embedding in the projective space P(\bigwedge^2 C^{N+1}). Let H^l be a general l-codimensional linear subspace in this projective space. We examine the geometry of the linear sections G(1,N)\cap H^l by studying their automorphism groups and list those which are homogeneous or quasihomogeneous.
We show how blowing up varieties in base loci of linear systems gives a procedure for creating new homological projective duals from old. Starting with a HP dual pair $X,Y$ and smooth orthogonal linear sections $X_L,Y_L$, we prove that the blowup of $X$ in $X_L$ is naturally HP dual to $Y_L$. The result does not need $Y$ to exist as a variety, i.e. it may be "noncommutative". We extend the result to the case where the base locus $X_L$ is a multiple of a smooth variety and the universal hyperplane has rational singularities; here the HP dual is a categorical resolution of singularities of $Y_L$…
The Drinfel'd Lagrangian Grassmannian compactifies the space of algebraic maps of fixed degree from the projective line into the Lagrangian Grassmannian. It has a natural projective embedding arising from the canonical embedding of the Lagrangian Grassmannian. We show that the defining ideal of any Schubert subvariety of the Drinfel'd Lagrangian Grassmannian is generated by polynomials which give a straightening law on an ordered set. Consequentially, any such subvariety is Cohen-Macaulay and Koszul. The Hilbert function is computed from the straightening law, leading to a new derivation of ce…
We study the derived category of a complete intersection X of bilinear divisors in the orbifold Sym^2 P(V). Our results are in the spirit of Kuznetsov's theory of homological projective duality, and we describe a homological projective duality relation between Sym^2 P(V) and a category of modules over a sheaf of Clifford algebras on P(Sym^2 V^vee). The proof follows a recently developed strategy combining variation of GIT stability and categories of global matrix factorisations. We begin by translating D^b(X) into a derived category of factorisations on an LG model, and then apply VGIT to obta…
We study the smooth projective symmetric variety of Picard number one that compactifies the exceptional complex Lie group G2, by describing it in terms of vector bundles on the spinor variety of Spin(14). We call it the double Cayley Grassmannian because quite remarkably, it exhibits very similar properties to those of the Cayley Grassmannian (the other symmetric variety of type G2), but doubled in the certain sense. We deduce among other things that all smooth projective symmetric varieties of Picard number one are infinitesimally rigid.
Many classes of projective algebraic varieties can be studied in terms of graded rings. Gorenstein graded rings in small codimension have been studied recently from an algebraic point of view, but the geometric meaning of the resulting structures is still relatively poorly understood. We discuss here the weighted projective analogs of homogeneous spaces such as the Grassmannian Gr(2,5) and orthogonal Grassmannian OGr(5,10) appearing in Mukai's linear section theorem for Fano 3-folds, and show how to use these as ambient spaces for weighted projective constructions. This is a first sketch of a …
This paper aims at generalizing some geometric properties of Grassmannians of finite dimensional vector spaces to the case of Grassmannnians of infinite dimensional ones, in particular for that of $k((z))$. It is shown that the Determinant Line Bundle generates its Picard Group and that the Plücker equations define it as closed subscheme of a infinite projective space. Finally, a characterization of finite dimensional projective spaces in Grassmannians allows us to offer an approach to the study of the automorphism group.
We study the projective behavior, mainly with respect to osculating spaces and secant varieties, of Lagrangian Grassmannians and Spinor varieties. We prove that these varieties have osculating dimension smaller than expected. Furthermore, we give numerical conditions ensuring the non secant defectivity of Lagrangian Grassmannians in their Plücker embedding and of Spinor varieties in both their Plücker and Spinor embeddings.
The Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) and motivic Chern (mC) classes of Schubert cells in a Grassmannian are one parameter deformations of the fundamental classes of the Schubert varieties in cohomology and K-theory respectively. Like the fundamental classes, the deformed classes form a basis for the cohomology and K-theory ring of the Grassmannian. The purpose of this paper is to initiate the study of the structure constants associated to the basis CSM and mC classes in terms of the combinatorics of polynomials. First, we prove formulas for the structure constants of projective spaces that invo…
We introduce the notion of a tropical coamoeba which gives a combinatorial description of the Fukaya category of the mirror of a toric Fano stack. We show that the polyhedral decomposition of a real n-torus into (n + 1) permutohedra gives a tropical coamoeba for the mirror of the projective space, and prove a torus-equivariant version of homological mirror symmetry for the projective space. As a corollary, we obtain homological mirror symmetry for toric orbifolds of the projective space.
If $¶^\infty$ is the projective ind-space, i.e. $¶^\infty$ is the inductive limit of linear embeddings of complex projective spaces, the Barth-Van de Ven-Tyurin (BVT) Theorem claims that every finite rank vector bundle on $¶^\infty$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of line bundles. We extend this theorem to general sequences of morphisms between projective spaces by proving that, if there are infinitely many morphisms of degree higher than one, every vector bundle of finite rank on the inductive limit is trivial. We then establish a relative version of these results, and apply it to the study of …
We study algebraic geometry linear codes defined by linear sections of the Grassmannian variety as codes associated to FFN$(1,q)$-projective varieties. As a consequence, we show that Schubert, Lagrangian-Grassmannian, and isotropic Grassmannian codes are special instances of codes defined by linear sections of the Grassmannian variety.
We describe explicitly how certain standard opens of the Hilbert scheme of points are embedded into Grassmannians. The standard opens of the Hilbert scheme that we consider are given as the intersection of a corresponding basic open affine of the Grassmannian and a closed stratum determined by a Fitting ideal.
An embedding of a point-line geometry Γis usually defined as an injective mapping εfrom the point-set of Γto the set of points of a projective space such that ε(l) is a projective line for every line l of Γ, but different situations have lately been considered in the literature, where ε(l) is allowed to be a subline of a projective line or a curve. In this paper we propose a more general definition of embedding which includes all the above situations and we focus on a class of embeddings, which we call Grassmman embeddings, where the points of Γare firstly associated to lines of a projective g…
We show that if n>5, PU(n-1,1) does not contain a cocompact arithmetic subgroup with the same Euler-Poincare characteristic (in the sense of C.T.C. Wall) as the complex projective space of dimension n-1, and show that if n=5, there are at least four such subgroups, which are in fact torsion-free. This, in particular, leads to examples of a fake projective space of dimension 4. Analogous results for arithmetic fake grassmannians Gr(m,n) with n>3 odd are also obtained.
In this paper we prove Homological Projective Duality for crepant categorical resolutions of several classes of linear determinantal varieties. By this we mean varieties that are cut out by the minors of a given rank of a n x m matrix of linear forms on a given projective space. As applications, we obtain pairs of derived-equivalent Calabi-Yau manifolds, and address a question by A. Bondal asking whether the derived category of any smooth projective variety can be fully faithfully embedded in the derived category of a smooth Fano variety. Moreover we discuss the relation between rationality an…
We extend the classical Schubert calculus of enumerative geometry for the Grassmann variety of lines in projective space from the complex realm to the real. Specifically, given any collection of Schubert conditions on lines in projective space which generically determine a finite number of lines, we show there exist real generic conditions determining the expected number of real lines. Our main tool is an explicit description of rational equivalences which also constitutes a novel determination of the Chow rings of these Grassmann varieties.
We study the projective variety CG parametrizing four dimensional subalgebras of the complex octonions, which we call the Cayley Grass-mannian. We prove that it is a spherical G2-variety with only three orbits that we describe explicitely. Its cohomology ring has a basis of Schubert type classes and we determine the intersection product completely.
In this paper we study smooth complex projective varieties $X$ containing a Grassmannian of lines $G(1,r)$ which appears as the zero locus of a section of a rank two nef vector bundle $E$. Among other things we prove that the bundle $E$ cannot be ample.
Let $G=SL(n, \mathbb{C}),$ and $T$ be a maximal torus of $G,$ where $n$ is a positive even integer. In this article, we study the GIT quotients of the Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian $G_{2,n}.$ We prove that the GIT quotients of the Richardson varieties in the minimal dimensional Schubert variety admitting stable points in $G_{2,n}$ are projective spaces. Further, we prove that the GIT quotients of certain Richardson varieties in $G_{2,n}$ are projective toric varieties. Also, we prove that the GIT quotients of the Schubert varieties in $G_{2,n}$ have at most finite set of singular poin…
Given a gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) $\mathcal{T}_{X}$ realizing a projective variety $X$ in one of its phases, i.e. its quantum Kähler moduli has a maximally unipotent point, we propose an \emph{extended} GLSM $\mathcal{T}_{\mathcal{X}}$ realizing the homological projective dual category $\mathcal{C}$ to $D^{b}Coh(X)$ as the category of B-branes of the Higgs branch of one of its phases. In most of the cases, the models $\mathcal{T}_{X}$ and $\mathcal{T}_{\mathcal{X}}$ are anomalous and the analysis of their Coulomb and mixed Coulomb-Higgs branches gives information on the semiorthogonal/L…
We prove that certain numbers occurring in a problem of paths enumeration, studied by Niederhausen (Catlan Traffic at the Beach, The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 9, (2002), 1--17), are top intersection numbers in the cohomology ring of the grassmannians of the lines in the complex projective (n+1)-space.
For a given irreducible projective variety $X$, the closure of the set of all hyperplanes containing tangents to $X$ is the projectively dual variety $X^{\vee}$. We study the singular locus of projectively dual varieties of certain Segre-Plücker embeddings in series of papers. In this work we give a classification of the irreducible components of the singular locus of the dual Grassmannian. Basically, it admits two components: cusp type and node type which are degeneracies of a certain Hessian matrix, and the closure of the set of tangent planes having more than one critical point, respectivel…
We study hybrid models arising as homological projective duals (HPD) of certain projective embeddings $f:X\rightarrow\mathbb{P}(V)$ of Fano manifolds $X$. More precisely, the category of B-branes of such hybrid models corresponds to the HPD category of the embedding $f$. B-branes on these hybrid models can be seen as global matrix factorizations over some compact space $B$ or, equivalently, as the derived category of the sheaf of $\mathcal{A}$-modules on $B$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is an $A_{\infty}$ algebra. This latter interpretation corresponds to a noncommutative resolution of $B$. We compute…
This paper considers curves in Grassmannians which are themselves immersed in projective space by the Plucker map. It is shown that for a generic vector bundle of high enough degree, the image curve lies in a proper linear subvariety of this projective space and satisfies good conditions on syzygies as a curve in this subspace. For very small degree and generic vector bundle, the curve is non- degenerate.
We classify complex projective varieties of dimension $2r \geq 8$ swept out by a family of codimension two grassmannians of lines $\mathbb{G}(1,r)$. They are either fibrations onto normal surfaces such that the general fibers are isomorphic to $\G(1,r)$ or the grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(1,r+1)$. The cases $r=2$ and $r=3$ are also considered in the more general context of varieties swept out by codimension two linear spaces or quadrics.
In a previous paper the authors have attached to each Dynkin quiver an associative algebra. The definition is categorical and the algebra is used to construct desingularizations of arbitrary quiver Grassmannians. In the present paper we prove that this algebra is isomorphic to an algebra constructed by Hernandez-Leclerc defined combinatorially and used to describe certain graded Nakajima quiver varieties. This approach is used to get an explicit realization of the orbit closures of representations of Dynkin quivers as affine quotients.
We prove Homological Mirror Symmetry for a smooth d-dimensional Calabi-Yau hypersurface in projective space, for any d > 2 (for example, d = 3 is the quintic three-fold). The main techniques involved in the proof are: the construction of an immersed Lagrangian sphere in the `d-dimensional pair of pants'; the introduction of the `relative Fukaya category', and an understanding of its grading structure; a description of the behaviour of this category with respect to branched covers (via an `orbifold' Fukaya category); a Morse-Bott model for the relative Fukaya category that allows one to make ex…
We introduce a natural symplectic structure on the moduli space of quadratic differentials with simple zeros and describe its Darboux coordinate systems in terms of so-called homological coordinates. We then show that this structure coincides with the canonical Poisson structure on the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, and therefore the homological coordinates provide a new system of Darboux coordinates. We define a natural family of commuting "homological flows" on the moduli space of quadratic differentials and find the corresponding action-angle variables. The space …
Let G be a simply-connected simple compact Lie group over the complex numbers. The affine Grassmannian is a projective ind-variety, homotopy-equivalent to the loop space of G and closely analogous to a maximal flag variety of the classical Grassmannian manifold. It has a Schubert cell decomposition indexed by the coroot lattice or equivalently by the minimal length coset representatives for the affine Weyl group modulo the Weyl group for G. The closure of an affine Schubert cell is a finite dimensional projective variety that we call an affine Schubert variety. In this paper we completely dete…
