The Grassmannians of lines in projective N-space, G(1,N), are embedded by way of the Pl"ucker embedding in the projective space P(\bigwedge^2 C^{N+1}). Let H^l be a general l-codimensional linear subspace in this projective space.
We examine the geometry of the linear sections G(1,N)\cap H^l by studying their automorphism groups and list those which are homogeneous or quasihomogeneous.
The aim of the paper is twofold. First, some results of Shiota and Plaza-Martin on Prym varieties of curves with an involution are generalized to the general case of an arbitrary automorphism of prime order. Second, the equations defining the moduli space of curves with an automorphism of prime order as a subscheme of the Sato Grassmannian are given.
This paper aims at generalizing some geometric properties of Grassmannians of finite dimensional vector spaces to the case of Grassmannnians of infinite dimensional ones, in particular for that of $k((z))$. It is shown that the Determinant Line Bundle generates its Picard Group and that the Plücker equations define it as closed subscheme of a infinite projective space. Finally, a characterization of finite dimensional projective spaces in Grassmannians allows us to offer an approach to the study of the automorphism group.
Given a smooth hyperplane section $H$ of a rational homogeneous space $G/P$ with Picard number one, we address the question whether it is always possible to lift an automorphism of $H$ to the Lie group $G$, or more precisely to Aut$(G/P)$. Using linear spaces and quadrics in $H$, we show that the answer is positive up to a few well understood exceptions related to Jordan algebras. When $G/P$ is an adjoint variety, we show how to describe Aut$(H)$ completely, extending results obtained by Prokhorov and Zaidenberg when $G$ is the exceptional group $G_2$.
We study algebraic geometry linear codes defined by linear sections of the Grassmannian variety as codes associated to FFN$(1,q)$-projective varieties. As a consequence, we show that Schubert, Lagrangian-Grassmannian, and isotropic Grassmannian codes are special instances of codes defined by linear sections of the Grassmannian variety.
We prove that the moduli spaces of rational curves of degree at most $3$ in linear sections of the Grassmannian $Gr(2,5)$ are all rational varieties. We also study their compactifications and birational geometry.
We use a theorem of Chow (1949) on line-preserving bijections of Grassmannians to determine the automorphism group of Grassmann codes. Further, we analyze the automorphisms of the big cell of a Grassmannian and then use it to settle an open question of Beelen et al. (2010) concerning the permutation automorphism groups of affine Grassmann codes. Finally, we prove an analogue of Chow's theorem for the case of Schubert divisors in Grassmannians and then use it to determine the automorphism group of linear codes associated to such Schubert divisors. In the course of this work, we also give an alt…
In this work we extend some previously known results on the automorphism group of Schubert varieties. We consider the Schubert conditions which define a Schubert variety. An automorphism of the Grassmannian fixes a Schubert variety contained in it if and only if it fixes certain elements of the flag used to define the Schubert conditions.
General linear sections of codimension 2 of the Grassmannians G(1,4) and G(1,5) appear in the classification of Fano manifolds of high index. Unlike Grassmannians, these manifolds are not homogeneous. Nevertheless, their automorphisms groups have finitely many orbits. In this work we first compute the orbits of these actions. Then we give a description of the variety of lines (under the Plücker embedding) passing through a fixed point in each orbit of the action. As an application we show that these Fano manifolds are not weakly 2-Fano, completing the classification of weakly 2-Fano manifolds …
The geometry of Sp(3)/U(3) as a subvariety of Gr(3,6) is explored to explain several examples given by Mukai of non-abelian Brill-Noether loci, and to give some new examples. These examples identify Brill-Noether loci of vector bundles on linear sections of the Lagrangian Grassmannian Sp(3)/U(3) with orthogonal linear sections of the dual variety and vice versa. A main technical result of independent interest is the fact that any nodal hyperplane section of the Lagrangian Grassmannian projected from the node is a linear section of the Grassmannian Gr(2,6).
Kontsevich and Soibelman defined the notion of Donaldson-Thomas invariants of a 3d Calabi-Yau category with a stability condition. A family of examples of such categories can be constructed from an arbitrary cluster variety. The corresponding Donaldson-Thomas invariants are encoded by a special formal automorphism of the cluster variety, known as Donaldson-Thomas transformation. Fix two integers $m$ and $n$ with $1<m<m+1<n$. It is known that the configuration space $\mathrm{Conf}_n(\mathbb{P}^{m-1})$, closely related to Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_m(n)$, is a cluster Poisson variety. In this pap…
We show that the tropical projective Grassmannian of planes is homeomorphic to a closed subset of the analytic Grassmannian in Berkovich's sense by constructing a continuous section to the tropicalization map. Our main tool is an explicit description of the algebraic coordinate rings of the toric strata of the Grassmannian. We determine the fibers of the tropicalization map and compute the initial degenerations of all the toric strata. As a consequence, we prove that the tropical multiplicities of all points in the tropical projective Grassmannian are equal to one. Finally, we determine a piec…
We define the odd symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds, which are smooth projective varieties equipped with an action of the odd symplectic group and generalizing the usual symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds. Contrary to the latter, which are the flag manifolds of the symplectic group, the varieties we introduce are not homogeneous. We argue nevertheless that in many respects the odd symplectic grassmannians and flag manifolds behave like homogeneous varieties; in support of this claim, we compute the automorphism group of the odd symplectic grassmannians, and we prove a Borel-…
There exist very twisting families of lines on Grassmannians and isotropic Grassmannians. This is a key step in proving existence of a rational section of a family of isotropic Grassmannians over a surface with vanishing Brauer obstruction.
We study affine Grassmannians for ramified triality groups. These groups are of type ${}^3D_4$, so they are forms of the orthogonal or the spin groups in 8 variables. They can be given as automorphisms of certain twisted composition algebras obtained from the octonion algebra. Using these composition algebras, we give descriptions of the affine Grassmannians for these triality groups as functors classifying suitable lattices in a fixed space.
Let $X$ be a Fano manifold which is the zero scheme of a general global section $s$ in an irreducible homogenous vector bundle over a Grassmannian. We prove that the restriction of the Plücker embedding embeds $X$ projectively normal, and that every small deformation of $X$ comes from a deformation of the section $s$. These results are strengthened in the case of Fano 4-folds.
We study linear projections on Pluecker space whose restriction to the Grassmannian is a non-trivial branched cover. When an automorphism of the Grassmannian preserves the fibers, we show that the Grassmannian is necessarily of m-dimensional linear subspaces in a symplectic vector space of dimension 2m, and the linear map is the Lagrangian involution. The Wronski map for a self-adjoint linear differential operator and pole placement map for symmetric linear systems are natural examples.
We show that homologically projectively dual varieties for Grassmannians Gr(2,6) and Gr(2,7) are given by certain noncommutative resolutions of singularities of the corresponding Pfaffian varieties. As an application we describe the derived categories of linear sections of these Grassmannians and Pfaffians. In particular, we show that (1) the derived category of a Pfaffian cubic 4-fold admits a semiorthogonal decompositions consisting of 3 exceptional line bundles, and of the derived category of a K3-surface; (2) mutually orthogonal Calabi-Yau linear sections of Gr(2,7) and of the correspondin…
We compute the group of automorphisms of an arbitrary ind-variety of (possibly isotropic) generalized flags. Such an ind-variety is a homogeneous ind-space for one of the ind-groups $SL(\infty)$, $O(\infty)$ or $Sp(\infty)$. We show that the respective automorphism groups are much larger than $SL(\infty)$, $O(\infty)$ or $Sp(\infty)$, and present the answer in terms of Mackey groups. The latter are groups of automorphisms of nondegenerate pairings of (in general infinite-dimensional) vector spaces. An explicit matrix form of the automorphism group of an arbitrary ind-variety of generalized fla…
We formulate and prove a generalization of Zariski-van Kampen theorem on the topological fundamental groups of smooth complex algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a hyperplane section theorem of Lefschetz-Zariski-van Kampen type for the fundamental groups of the complements to the Grassmannian dual varieties.
In this paper we study smooth complex projective varieties $X$ containing a Grassmannian of lines $G(1,r)$ which appears as the zero locus of a section of a rank two nef vector bundle $E$. Among other things we prove that the bundle $E$ cannot be ample.

Let $X$ be an $n$-dimensional smooth Fano complex variety of Picard number one. Assume that the VMRT at a general point of $X$ is smooth irreducible and non-degenerate (which holds if $X$ is covered by lines with index $ >(n+2)/2$). It is proven that $\dim \mathfrak{aut}(X) > n(n+1)/2$ if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^n, \mathbb{Q}^n$ or ${\rm Gr}(2,5)$. Furthermore, the equality $\dim \mathfrak{aut}(X) = n(n+1)/2$ holds only when $X$ is isomorphic to the 6-dimensional Lagrangian Grassmannian ${\rm Lag}(6)$ or a general hyperplane section of ${\rm Gr}(2,5)$.
We compute the automorphism groups of finite and cofinite ind-grassmannians, as well as of the ind-variety of maximal flags indexed by Z_{>0}. We pay special attention to differences with the case of ordinary flag varieties.
Many classes of projective algebraic varieties can be studied in terms of graded rings. Gorenstein graded rings in small codimension have been studied recently from an algebraic point of view, but the geometric meaning of the resulting structures is still relatively poorly understood. We discuss here the weighted projective analogs of homogeneous spaces such as the Grassmannian Gr(2,5) and orthogonal Grassmannian OGr(5,10) appearing in Mukai's linear section theorem for Fano 3-folds, and show how to use these as ambient spaces for weighted projective constructions. This is a first sketch of a …
We analyze K3 surfaces admitting an elliptic fibration $E$ and a finite group $G$ of symplectic automorphisms preserving this elliptic fibration. We construct the quotient elliptic fibration $E/G$ comparing its properties to the ones of $E$. We show that if $E$ admits an $n$-torsion section, its quotient by the group of automorphisms induced by this section admits again an $n$-torsion section. Considering automorphisms coming from the base of the fibration, we can describe the Mordell--Weil lattice of a fibration described by Kloosterman. We give the isometries between lattices described by th…

In our previous paper we suggested a conjecture relating the structure of the small quantum cohomology ring of a smooth Fano variety to the structure of its derived category of coherent sheaves. Here we generalize this conjecture, make it more precise, and support by the examples of (co)adjoint homogeneous varieties of simple algebraic groups of Dynkin types $A_n$ and $D_n$, i.e., flag varieties $Fl(1,n;n+1)$ and isotropic orthogonal Grassmannians $OG(2,2n)$; in particular we construct on each of those an exceptional collection invariant with respect to the entire automorphism group. For $OG(2…
Kostant constructed a section from the adjoint quotient morphism of a simple Lie algebra to the open set of regular elements, and Steinberg constructed such a section for the adjoint quotient of a simply connected and simple algebraic group. In this paper, we show that all sections of the adjoint quotient are conjugate via a morphism from the adjoint quotient to the group. In particular, the sections constructed via the parabolic construction are conjugate either to the Kostant section or to the Steinberg section. The method of proof consists in studying automorphism sheaves of certain princip…

We consider Fano sevenfolds $Y$ obtained by intersecting the Grassmannian $\hbox{Gr}(3,6)$ with a codimension 2 linear subspace (with respect to the Plücker embedding). We prove that the motive of $Y$ is Kimura finite-dimensional. We also prove the generalized Hodge conjecture for all powers of $Y$.
We give a system of generators of the automorphism group of the singular $K3$ surface of discriminant 7. This system of generators consists of the inversion involutions of some elliptic fibrations with a section together with ${\rm PGL}_2(7)$.
Let $Π$ be a polar space of rank $n\ge 3$. Denote by ${\mathcal G}_{k}(Π)$ the polar Grassmannian formed by singular subspaces of $Π$ whose projective dimension is equal to $k$. Suppose that $k$ is an integer not greater than $n-2$ and consider the relation ${\mathfrak R}_{i,j}$, $0\le i\le j\le k+1$ formed by all pairs $(X,Y)\in {\mathcal G}_{k}(Π)\times {\mathcal G}_{k}(Π)$ such that $\dim_{p}(X^{\perp}\cap Y)=k-i$ and $\dim_{p} (X\cap Y)=k-j$ ($X^{\perp}$ consists of all points of $Π$ collinear to every point of $X$). We show that every bijective transformation of ${\mathcal G}_{k}(Π)$ pres…
We prove that, for 3 < m < n-1, the Grassmannian of m-dimensional subspaces of the space of skew-symmetric forms over a vector space of dimension n is birational to the Hilbert scheme of the degeneracy loci of m global sections of Omega(2), the twisted cotangent bundle on P^{n-1}. For 3=m<n-1 and n odd, this Grassmannian is proved to be birational to the set of Veronese surfaces parametrized by the Pfaffians of linear skew-symmetric matrices of order n.
This work is motivated by the relation between the KP and BKP integrable hierarchies, whose $τ$-functions may be viewed as sections of dual determinantal and Pfaffian line bundles over infinite dimensional Grassmannians. In finite dimensions, we show how to relate the Cartan map which, for a vector space $V$ of dimension $N$, embeds the Grassmannian ${\mathrm {Gr}}^0_V(V+V^*)$ of maximal isotropic subspaces of $V+ V^*$, with respect to the natural scalar product, into the projectivization of the exterior space $Λ(V)$, and the Plücker map, which embeds the Grassmannian ${\mathrm {Gr}}_V(V+ V^*)…
We discuss the geometry of transverse linear sections of the spinor tenfold $X$, the connected component of the orthogonal Grassmannian of 5-dimensional isotropic subspaces in a 10-dimensional vector space equipped with a non-degenerate quadratic form. In particular, we show that as soon as the dimension of a linear section of $X$ is at least 5, its integral Chow motive is of Lefschetz type. We discuss classification of smooth linear sections of $X$ of small codimension; in particular we check that there is a unique isomorphism class of smooth hyperplane sections and exactly two isomorphism cl…
In this paper, we will prove that all Batyrev Calabi-Yau threefolds, arising from a small resolution of a generic hyperplane section of a reflexive Fano-Gorenstein fourfold, have finite automorphism group. Together with Morrison conjecture, this suggests that Batyrev Calabi-Yau threefolds should have a polyhedral Kahler (ample) cone.
It is known that the automorphism group of a K-polystable Fano manifold is reductive. Codogni and Dervan construct a canonical filtration of the section ring, called Loewy filtration, and conjecture that the Loewy filtration destabilizes any Fano variety with non-reductive automorphism group. In this note, we give a counterexample to their conjecture.
Let $G$ be a complex connected reductive algebraic group that acts on a smooth complex algebraic variety $X$, and let $E$ be a $G$-equivariant algebraic vector bundle over $X$. A section of $E$ is regular if it is transversal to the zero section. Let $U\subsetΓ(X,E)$ be the subset of regular sections. We give a sufficient condition in terms of topological invariants of $E$ and $X$ that implies that every orbit map $O\colon G\to U$ induces a surjection in rational cohomology. Under natural assumptions on $X$ and $E$ this condition is also necessary. If the condition is satisfied, then (1) the g…
We show that any hyperplane section of a variety which is the inverse image of a smooth variety of dimension at least 2 by an endomorphism (wich is not an automorphism) of the projective space, is linearly complete. We stress the case of smooth surfaces in projective fourspace.
Let U be the tautological subbundle on the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k, n)$. There is a natural morphism $\mathrm{Tot}(U) \to \mathbb{A}^n$. Using it, we give a semiorthogonal decomposition for the bounded derived category $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(\mathrm{Tot}(U))$ into several exceptional objects and several copies of $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(\mathbb{A}^n)$. We also prove a global version of this result: given a vector bundle $E$ with a regular section $s$, consider a subvariety of the relative Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k, E)$ of those subspaces which contain the value of $s$. The derived category of t…
In this paper we mainly study the following question: For what projective manifold $X$ of dimension $\geq 3$ that any $f\in Aut(X)$ has zero topological entropy? Using some non-vanishing conditions on nef cohomology classes, we study the case where $X\rightarrow X_0$ is a finite blowup along smooth centers, here $X_0$ is a projective manifold of interest. Here we allow $X_0$ to be either one of the following manifolds: it has Picard number 1, or a Fano manifold, or it is a projective hyper-Kähler manifold. We also allow the centers of blowups to have large dimensions relative to that of $X_0$ …
Given a complex projective algebraic variety, write H(X) for its cohomology with complex coefficients and IH(X) for its Intersection cohomology. We first show that, under some fairly general conditions, the canonical map H(X)\to IH(X) is injective. Now let Gr = G((z))/G[[z]] be the loop Grassmannian for a complex semisimple group G, and let X be the closure of a G[[z]]-orbit in Gr. We prove, using the general result above, a conjecture of D. Peterson describing the cohomology algebra H(X) in terms of the centralizer of the principal nilpotent in the Langlands dual of Lie(G). In the last sectio…
If $F$ is a polynomial automorphism over a finite field $\F_q$ in dimension $n$, then it induces a bijection $π_{q^r}(F)$ of $(\F_{q^r})^n$ for every $r\in \N^*$. We say that $F$ can be `mimicked' by elements of a certain group of automorphisms $\mathcal{G}$ if there are $g_r\in \mathcal{G}$ such that $π_{q^r}(g_r)=π_{q^r}(F)$. We show that the Nagata automorphism (and any other automorphism in three variables fixing one variable) can be mimicked by tame automorphisms. This on the one hand removes the hope of showing that such an automorphism is non-tame by studying one bijection it induces, b…
Nikulin and Vinberg proved that there are only a finite number of lattices of rank $\geq 3$ that are the Néron-Severi group of projective K3 surfaces with a finite automorphism group. The aim of this paper is to provide a more geometric description of such K3 surfaces $X$, when these surfaces have moreover no elliptic fibrations. In that case we show that such K3 surface is either a quartic with special hyperplane sections or a double cover of the plane branched over a smooth sextic curve which has special tangencies properties with some lines, conics or cuspidal cubic curves. We then study th…
Given a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus at least $2$ with automorphism group $G$ we provide formulae that enable us to compute traces of automorphisms of X on the space of global sections of $G$-linearized line bundles defined on certain blow-ups of proyective spaces along the curve $X$. The method is an adaptation of one used by Thaddeus to compute the dimensions of those spaces. In particular we can compute the traces of automorphisms of $X$ on the Verlinde spaces corresponding to the moduli space $SU_{X}(2,ξ)$ when $ξ$ is a line bundle $G$-linearized of suitable degree.
Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that Schur-finiteness in the setting of Voevodsky's mixed motives is invariant under homological projective duality. As an application, we show that the mixed motives of smooth linear sections of certain (Lagrangian) Grassmannians, spinor varieties, and determinantal varieties, are Schur-finite. Finally, we upgrade our applications from Schur-finiteness to Kimura-finiteness.
The Voevodsky nilpotence conjecture was proved by Bernardara-Marcolli-Tabuada for certain quadric fibrations, intersections of quadrics, linear sections of Grassmannians, linear sections of determinantal varieties, and Moishezon manifolds, and later by Ornaghi-Pertusi for certain cubic fourfolds and Gushel-Mukai fourfolds. In this paper we refine these results by using the algebraic equivalence relation instead of the nilpotence equivalence relation. Along the way, we address also certain cases of Küchle fourfolds, families of Sextic del Pezzo surfaces and families of Fano fourfolds of K3 type…
