Lower and upper estimates are given for the probability that the epsilon-enlargement of planar Brownian motion to time 1 (the epsilon sausage) contains a unit line segment. The estimates imply that Brownian motion to time 1 itself contains no line segment.
We study a one-dimensional diffusion process in a drifted Brownian potential. We characterize the upper functions of its hitting times in the sense of Paul Lévy, and determine the lower limits in terms of an iterated logarithm law.
We establish an almost sure scaling limit theorem for super-Brownian motion on $\mathbb{R}^d$ associated with the semi-linear equation $u_t = {1/2}Δu +βu-αu^2$, where $α$ and $β$ are positive constants. In this case, the spectral theoretical assumptions that required in Chen et al (2008) are not satisfied. An example is given to show that the main results also hold for some sub-domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$.
In this note we consider a branching Brownian motion (BBM) on $\mathbb{R}$ in which a particle at spatial position $y$ splits into two at rate $βy^2$, where $β>0$ is a constant. This is a critical breeding rate for BBM in the sense that the expected population size blows up in finite time while the population size remains finite, almost surely, for all time. We find an asymptotic for the almost sure rate of growth of the population.
We give a proof of a result on the growth of the number of particles along chosen paths in a branching Brownian motion. The work follows the approach of classical large deviations results, in which paths in $C[0,1]$ are rescaled onto $C[0,T]$ for large $T$. The methods used are probabilistic and take advantage of modern spine techniques.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the maximum local time L*(t) of the Brox's process, the diffusion in Brownian environment. Shi proved that the maximum speed of L*(t) is surprisingly, at least t log(log(log t)) whereas in the discrete case it is t. We show here that t log(log(log t)) is the proper rate and we prove that for the minimum speed the rate is the same as in the discrete case namely t/log(log(log t)).
We give new results on the growth of the number of particles in a dyadic branching Brownian motion which follow within a fixed distance of a path $f:[0,\infty)\to \mathbb{R}$. We show that it is possible to count the number of particles without rescaling the paths. Our results reveal that the number of particles along certain paths can oscillate dramatically. The methods used are entirely probabilistic, taking advantage of the spine technique developed by, amongst others, Lyons et al, Kyprianou, and Hardy & Harris.
For $d \in \{1,2,3\}$, let $(B^d_t;~ t \geq 0)$ be a $d$-dimensional standard Brownian motion. We study the $d$-Brownian span set $Span(d):=\{t-s;~ B^d_s=B^d_t~\mbox{for some}~0 \leq s \leq t\}$. We prove that almost surely the random set $Span(d)$ is $σ$-compact and dense in $\mathbb{R}_{+}$. In addition, we show that $Span(1)=\mathbb{R}_{+}$ almost surely; the Lebesgue measure of $Span(2)$ is $0$ almost surely and its Hausdorff dimension is $1$ almost surely; and the Hausdorff dimension of $Span(3)$ is $\frac{1}{2}$ almost surely. We also list a number of conjectures and open problems.
Let $B$ be a bifractional Brownian motion with parameters $H\in (0, 1)$ and $K\in(0,1]$. For any $n\geq1$, set $Z_n =\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}\big[n^{2HK}(B_{(i+1)/n}-B_{i/n})^2-\E((B_{i+1}-B_{i})^2)\big]$. We use the Malliavin calculus and the so-called Stein's method on Wiener chaos introduced by Nourdin and Peccati \cite{NP09} to derive, in the case when $0<HK\leq3/4$, Berry-Esséen-type bounds for the Kolmogorov distance between the law of the correct renormalization $V_n$ of $Z_n$ and the standard normal law. Finally, we study almost sure central limit theorems for the sequence $V_n$.

In this note, we prove a sharp $L^p$-rate of convergence of the number of upcrossings to the local time of the Brownian motion. In particular, it provides novel $p$-variation estimates ($2 < p < \infty$) for the number of upcrossings of the Brownian motion. Our result complements the fundamental work of Koshnevisan \cite{kho} who obtains an almost sure exact rate of convergence in the sup norm.
We study the set of points $\mathcal{D}_{n,m}$ around which two independent Brownian motions wind at least $n$ (resp. $m$) times. We prove that its area is asymptotically equivalent, in $L^p$ and almost surely, to $\frac{\ell(\mathbb{R}^2)}{4π^2 n m}$, where $\ell$ is the intersection measure of the two trajectories. We also prove that the properly scaled Lebesgue measure carried by $\mathcal{D}_{n,m}$ converges almost surely weakly toward $\ell$.
In this paper we define Brownian local time as the almost sure limit of the local times of a nested sequence of simple, symmetric random walks. The limit is jointly continuous in $(t,x)$. The rate of convergence is $n^{\frac14} (\log n)^{\frac34}$ that is close to the best possible. The tools we apply are almost exclusively from elementary probability theory.
Many years ago, Griego, Heath and Ruiz-Moncayo proved that it is possible to define realizations of a sequence of uniform transform processes that converges almost surely to the standard Brownian motion, uniformly on the unit time interval. In this paper we extend their results to the multi parameter case. We begin constructing a family of processes, starting from a set of independent standard Poisson processes, that has realizations that converge almost surely to the Brownian sheet, uniformly on the unit square. At the end the extension to the $d$-parameter Wiener processes is presented.
There is a close connection between intersections of Brownian motion paths and percolation on trees. Recently, ideas from probability on trees were an important component of the multifractal analysis of Brownian occupation measure, in joint work with A. Dembo, J. Rosen and O. Zeitouni. As a consequence, we proved two conjectures about simple random walk in two dimensions: The first, due to Erdős and Taylor (1960), involves the number of visits to the most visited lattice site in the first $n$ steps of the walk. The second, due to Aldous (1989), concerns the number of steps it takes a simple ra…
The signature of Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ over a running time interval $[0,T]$ is the collection of all iterated Stratonovich path integrals along the Brownian motion. We show that, in dimension $d\geq 2$, almost all Brownian motion sample paths (running up to time $T$) are determined by its signature over $[0,T]$
The main purpose of this work is to define planar self-intersection local time by an alternative approach which is based on an almost sure pathwise approximation of planar Brownian motion by simple, symmetric random walks. As a result, Brownian self-intersection local time is obtained as an almost sure limit of local averages of simple random walk self-intersection local times. An important tool is a discrete version of the Tanaka--Rosen--Yor formula; the continuous version of the formula is obtained as an almost sure limit of the discrete version. The author hopes that this approach to self-i…
Let (B_t : t > 0) be a planar Brownian motion and define gauge functions $ϕ_α(s)=log(1/s)^{-α}$ for $α>0$. If $α<1$ we show that almost surely there exists a point x in the plane such that $H^{ϕ_α}({t > 0 : B_t=x})>0$, but if $α>1$ almost surely $H^{ϕ_α} ({t > 0 : B_t=x})=0$ simultaneously for all $x\in R^2$. This resolves a longstanding open problem posed by S.,J. Taylor in 1986.
In this paper, we consider the explicit bound for the second-order approximation of the quadratic variation of a general fractional Gaussian process $(G_t)_{t\ge 0}$. The second order mixed partial derivative of the covariance function $ R(t,\, s)=\mathbb{E}[G_t G_s]$ can be decomposed into two parts, one of which coincides with that of fractional Brownian motion and the other of which is bounded by $(ts)^{H-1}$ up to a constant factor. This condition is valid for a class of continuous Gaussian processes that fails to be self-similar or have stationary increments. %Some examples include the su…
We construct a wavelet-based almost sure uniform approximation of fractional Brownian motion (fBm) B_t^(H), t in [0, 1], of Hurst index H in (0, 1). Our results show that by Haar wavelets which merely have one vanishing moment, an almost sure uniform expansion of fBm of H in (0, 1) can be established. The convergence rate of our approximation is derived. We also describe a parallel algorithm that generates sample paths of an fBm efficiently.
We consider the additive martingale $W_t(λ)$ and the derivative martingale $\partial W_t(λ)$ for one-dimensional supercritical super-Brownian motions with general branching mechanism. In the critical case $λ=λ_0$, we prove that $\sqrt{t}W_t(λ_0)$ converges in probability to a positive limit, which is a constant multiple of the almost sure limit $\partial W_\infty(λ_0)$ of the derivative martingale $\partial W_t(λ_0)$. We also prove that, on the survival event, $\limsup_{t\to\infty}\sqrt{t}W_t(λ_0)=\infty$ almost surely.
Any fixed cylinder is hit almost surely by a 3-dimensional Brownian motion, but is there a random cylinder that is in the complement? We answer this for cylinders, and then replacing a cylinder with a more general set.
We consider the stochastic continuity equation perturbed by a fractional Brownian motion and the drift is allowed to be discontinuous. We show that for almost all paths of the fractional Brownian motion there exists a solution to the equation.
We find a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension that a Liouville Brownian motion spends in $α$-thick points of the Gaussian Free Field, where $α$ is not necessarily equal to the parameter used in the construction of the geometry. This completes a conjecture in \cite{berestycki2013diffusion}, where the corresponding upper bound was shown. In the course of the proof, we obtain estimates on the (Euclidean) diffusivity exponent, which depends strongly on the nature of the starting point. For a Liouville typical point, it is $1/(2 - \frac{γ^2}{2})$. In particular, for $γ> \sqrt{2}$, the path is L…
Let $D_N$ be the set of points around which a planar Brownian motion winds at least $N$ times. We prove that the random measure on the plane with density $2 πN 1_{D_N}$ with respect to the Lebesgue measure converges almost surely weakly, as $N$ tends to infinity, towards the occupation measure of the Brownian motion.
We construct a family of processes, from a single Poisson process, that converges in law to a complex Brownian motion. Moreover, we find realizations of these processes that converge almost surely to the complex Brownian motion, uniformly on the unit time interval. Finally the rate of convergence is derived.
We study a system of coalescing random walks on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ in which the walk is oriented in the $d$-th direction and follows certain specified rules. We first study the geometry of the paths and show that, almost surely, the paths from a graph consisting of just one tree for dimentions $d=2,3$ and infinitely many disjoint trees for dimensions $d\geq 4$. Also, there is no bi-infinite path in the graph almost surely for $d\geq 2$. Subsequently, we prove that for $d=2$ the diffusive scaling of this system converges in distribution to the Brownian web.
A well-known result of Arratia shows that one can make rigorous the notion of starting an independent Brownian motion at every point of an arbitrary closed subset of the real line and then building a set-valued process by requiring particles to coalesce when they collide. Arratia noted that the value of this process will be almost surely a locally finite set at all positive times, and a finite set almost surely if the initial value is compact: the key to both of these facts is the observation that, because of the topology of the real line and the continuity of Brownian sample paths, at the tim…
We consider two dynamical variants of Dvoretzky's classical problem of random interval coverings of the unit circle, the latter having been completely solved by L. Shepp. In the first model, the centers of the intervals perform independent Brownian motions and in the second model, the positions of the intervals are updated according to independent Poisson processes where an interval of length $\ell$ is updated at rate $\ell^{-α}$ where $α\ge0$ is a parameter. For the model with Brownian motions, a special case of our results is that if the length of the $n$th interval is $c/n$, then there are …
We study Brownian motion in a drifted Brownian potential in the subexponential regime. We prove that the annealed probability of deviating below the almost sure speed has a polynomial rate of decay and compute the exponent in this power law. This provides a continuous-time analogue of what Dembo, Peres and Zeitouni proved for the transient random walk in random environment. Our method takes a completely different route, making use of Lamperti's representation together with an iteration scheme.

We consider a model of Branching Brownian Motion in which the usual spatially-homogeneous and catalytic branching at a single point are simultaneously present. We establish the almost sure growth rates of population in certain time-dependent regions and as a consequence the first-order asymptotic behaviour of the rightmost particle.
Using the explicit representations of the Brownian motions on the hyperbolic spaces, we show that their almost sure convergence and the central limit theorems for the radial components as time tends to infinity are easily obtained. We also give a straightforward strategy to obtain the explicit expressions for the limit distributions or the Poisson kernels.
Let $ \{W(t), t\ge 0\}$ be a standard Brownian motion. If $I$ is a bounded interval on which $W $ has no zero, an almost sure lower bound to $\inf\{|W(t)|, t\in I\}$ can be provided, when $I$ is taken from a given countable family of intervals covering the positive half-line.
By the work of P. Lévy, the sample paths of the Brownian motion are known to satisfy a certain Hölder regularity condition almost surely. This was later improved by Ciesielski, who studied the regularity of these paths in Besov and Besov-Orlicz spaces. We review these results and propose new function spaces of Besov type, strictly smaller than those of Ciesielski and Lévy, where the sample paths of the Brownian motion lie in almost surely. In the same spirit, we review and extend the work of Kamont, who investigated the same question for the multivariate Brownian sheet and function spaces of d…
We construct Brownian motion on a wide class of metric spaces similar to graphs, and show that its cover time admits an upper bound depending only on the length of the space.
Let β_k(n) be the number of self-intersections of order k, appropriately renormalized, for a mean zero random walk X_n in Z^2 with 2+δmoments. On a suitable probability space we can construct X_n and a planar Brownian motion W_t such that for each k\geq 2, |β_k(n)-γ_k(n)|=O(n^{-a}), a.s. for some a>0 where γ_k(n) is the renormalized self-intersection local time of order k at time 1 for the Brownian motion W_{nt}/\sqrt n.
We study Brownian motion and stochastic parallel transport on Perelman's almost Ricci flat manifold $\mathscr M=M\times \mathbb S^N\times I$, whose dimension depends on a parameter $N$ unbounded from above. We construct sequences of projected Brownian motions and stochastic parallel transports which for $N \to \infty$ converge to the corresponding objects for the Ricci flow. In order to make precise this process of passing to the limit, we study the martingale problems for the Laplace operator on $\mathscr M$ and for the horizontal Laplacian on the orthonormal frame bundle $\mathscr{OM}$ . As …
We consider branching Brownian motion on the real line with absorption at zero, in which particles move according to independent Brownian motions with the critical drift of $-\sqrt{2}$. Kesten (1978) showed that almost surely this process eventually dies out. Here we obtain upper and lower bounds on the probability that the process survives until some large time $t$. These bounds improve upon results of Kesten (1978), and partially confirm nonrigorous predictions of Derrida and Simon (2007).
In this note we prove an existence and uniqueness result of solution for stochastic differential delay equations with hereditary drift driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H > 1/2$. Then, we show that, when the delay goes to zero, the solutions to these equations converge, almost surely and in $L^p$, to the solution for the equation without delay. The stochastic integral with respect to the fractional Brownian motion is a pathwise Riemann-Stieltjes integral.
We consider a branching Brownian motion in which binary fission takes place only when particles are at the origin at a rate β> 0 on the local time scale. We obtain results regarding the asymptotic behaviour of the number of particles above λt at time t, for λ> 0. As a corollary, we establish the almost sure asymptotic speed of the rightmost particle. We also prove a Strong Law of Large Numbers for this catalytic branching Brownian motion.
We introduce the notion of a stationary random manifold and develop the basic entropy theory for it. Examples include manifolds admitting a compact quotient under isometries and generic leaves of a compact foliation. We prove that the entropy of an ergodic stationary random manifold is zero if and only if the manifold satisfies the Liouville property almost surely, and is positive if and only if it admits an infinite dimensional space of bounded harmonic functions almost surely. Upper and lower bounds for the entropy are provided in terms of the linear drift of Brownian motion and average volu…
Using coupling by change of measure and an approximation technique, Wang's Harnack inequalities are established for a class of functional SDEs driven by subordinate Brownian motions. The results cover the corresponding ones in the case without delay.
We give short proofs of two classical results about the position of the extremal particle in a branching Brownian motion, one concerning the median position and another the almost sure behaviour.
We consider a (one-dimensional) branching Brownian motion process with a general offspring distribution having at least two moments, and in which all particles have a drift towards the origin where they are immediately absorbed. It is well-known that if and only if the branching rate is sufficiently large, then the population survives forever with positive probability. We show that throughout this super-critical regime, the number of particles inside any fixed set normalized by the mean population size converges to an explicit limit, almost surely and in $L^1$. As a consequence, we get that al…
We study the height of the maximal particle at time $t$ of a one dimensional branching Brownian motion with a space-dependent branching rate. The branching rate is set to zero in finitely many intervals (obstacles) of order $t$. We obtain almost sure asymptotics of the first order of the maximum, describe the path of a particle reaching this height and describe its dependence on the size and location of the obstacles.
We consider two related linear PDE's perturbed by a fractional Brownian motion. We allow the drift to be discontinuous, in which case the corresponding deterministic equation is ill-posed. However, the noise will be shown to have a regularizing effect on the equations in the sense that we can prove existence of solutions for almost all paths of the fractional Brownian motion.
In a previous paper, the authors proved a conjecture of Lalley and Sellke that the empirical (time-averaged) distribution function of the maximum of branching Brownian motion converges almost surely to a Gumbel distribution. The result is extended here to the entire system of particles that are extremal, i.e. close to the maximum. Namely, it is proved that the distribution of extremal particles under time-average converges to a Poisson cluster process.
We consider the Anderson polymer partition function $$ u(t):=\mathbb{E}^X\Bigl[e^{\int_0^t \mathrm{d}B^{X(s)}_s}\Bigr]\,, $$ where $\{B^{x}_t\,;\, t\geq0\}_{x\in\mathbb{Z}^d}$ is a family of independent fractional Brownian motions all with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$, and $\{X(t)\}_{t\in \mathbb{R}^{\geq 0}}$ is a continuous-time simple symmetric random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with jump rate $κ$ and started from the origin. $\mathbb{E}^X$ is the expectation with respect to this random walk. We prove that when $H\leq 1/2$, the function $u(t)$ almost surely grows asymptotically like $e^{l t}$, wh…
We prove that classical and free Brownian motions with initial distributions are unimodal for sufficiently large time, under some assumption on the initial distributions. The assumption is almost optimal in some sense. Similar results are shown for a symmetric stable process with index 1 and a positive stable process with index $1/2$. We also prove that free Brownian motion with initial symmetric unimodal distribution is unimodal, and discuss strong unimodality for free convolution.
