Any fixed cylinder is hit almost surely by a 3-dimensional Brownian motion, but is there a random cylinder that is in the complement? We answer this for cylinders, and then replacing a cylinder with a more general set.
We compare two examples of random dense countable sets, `Brownian local minima' and `unordered uniform infinite sample'. They appear to be identically distributed. A framework for such notions is proposed. In addition, random elements of other singular spaces (especially, reals modulo rationals) are considered.
Let $B =\{ B_t \, : \, t \geq 0 \}$ be a real-valued fractional Brownian motion of index $H \in (0,1)$. We prove that the macroscopic Hausdorff dimension of the level sets $\mathcal{L}_x = \left\{ t \in \mathbb{R}_+ \, : \, B_t=x \right\}$ is, with probability one, equal to $1-H$ for all $x\in\mathbb{R}$.
If $C_1$ is the convex hull of the curve of the standard Brownian motion in the complex plane watched from 0 to 1, we consider the convex hulls of $C_1$ and several rotations of it and we compute the mean of the length of their perimeter by elementary calculations.
We consider a subordinate Brownian motion $X$ with Gaussian components when the scaling order of purely discontinuous part is between $0$ and $2$ including $2$. In this paper we establish sharp two-sided bounds for transition density of $X$ in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and $C^{1,1}$-open sets. As a corollary, we obtain a sharp Green function estimates.
A random dense countable set is characterized (in distribution) by independence and stationarity. Two examples are `Brownian local minima' and `unordered infinite sample'. They are identically distributed. A framework for such concepts, proposed here, includes a wide class of random equivalence classes.
The space-time distribution, $Q_A(x,dt dξ)$ say, of Brownian hitting of a bounded Borel set $A$ of the $d$-dimensional Euclidian space is studied. We derive the asymptotic form of the leading term of the time-derivative $Q_A(x, dtdξ)/dt$ for each $d =2, 3, ...$, valid uniformly with respect to the starting point $x$ of the Brownian motion, which result extends significantly the classical results for $Q_A(x, dt dξ)$ itself by Hunt ($d=2$), Joffe and Spitzer ($d= 3, 4,...$). The results are applied to find the asymptotic form of the expected volume of Wiener sausage for the Brownian bridge joini…
This work is a continuation of the manuscript "the structure of extreme level sets in branching Brownian motion", in which the same authors studied the fine structure of the extreme level sets of branching Brownian motion, namely the sets of particles whose height is within a finite distance from the global maximum. It is well known that such particles congregate at large times in clusters of order-one genealogical diameter around local maxima which form a Cox process in the limit. Our main finding here is that most of the particles in an extreme level set come from only a small fraction of th…
We study the spectral heat content for a class of open sets with fractal boundaries determined by similitudes in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq 1$, with respect to subordinate killed Brownian motions via $α/2$-stable subordinators and establish the asymptotic behavior of the spectral heat content as $t\to 0$ for the full range of $α\in (0,2)$. Our main theorems show that these asymptotic behaviors depend on whether the sequence of logarithms of the coefficients of the similitudes is arithmetic when $α\in [d-\b,2)$, where $\b$ is the interior Minkowski dimension of the boundary of the open set. The m…
We study deviation probabilities for the number of high positioned particles in branching Brownian motion, and confirm a conjecture of Derrida and Shi (2016). We also solve the corresponding problem for the two-dimensional discrete Gaussian free field. Our method relies on an elementary inequality for inhomogeneous Galton-Watson processes.
In this paper we study the Martin boundary of unbounded open sets at infinity for a large class of subordinate Brownian motions. We first prove that, for such subordinate Brownian motions, the uniform boundary Harnack principle at infinity holds for arbitrary unbounded open sets. Then we introduce the notion of $κ$-fatness at infinity for open sets and show that the Martin boundary at infinity of any such open set consists of exactly one point and that point is a minimal Martin boundary point.
Let $B^H = \{ B^H(t), t\in\mathbb{R}^N \}$ be an $(N,d)$-fractional Brownian sheet with Hurst index $H=(H_1,\dotsc,H_N)\in (0,1)^N$. The main objective of the present paper is to study the Hausdorff dimension of the image sets $B^H(F+t)$, $F\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ and $t\in\mathbb{R}^N$, in the dimension case $d<\tfrac{1}{H_1}+\cdots+\tfrac{1}{H_N}$. Following the seminal work of Kaufman (1989), we establish uniform dimensional properties on $B^H$, answering questions raised by Khoshnevisan et al (2006) and Wu and Xiao (2009). For the purpose of this work, we introduce a refinement of the sectori…
We prove Fatou's theorem for nonnegative harmonic functions with respect to subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components on bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets $D$. We prove that nonnegative harmonic functions with respect to such processes on $D$ converge nontangentially almost everywhere with respect to the surface measure as well as the harmonic measure restricted to the boundary of the domain. In order to prove this, we first prove that the harmonic measure restricted to $\partial D$ is mutually absolutely continuous with respect to the surface measure. We also show that tangential conver…
On the infinite dimensional space $E$ of continuous paths from $[0,1]$ to $\mathbb R^n$, $n \ge 3$, endowed with the Wiener measure $μ$, we construct a surface measure defined on level sets of the $L^2$-norm of $n$-dimensional processes that are solutions to a class of stochastic gradient system-type equations, and provide an integration by parts formula involving this surface measure. We follow the approach to surface measures in Gaussian spaces proposed via techniques of Malliavin calculus by Airault and Malliavin in 1988.
We study the structure of extreme level sets of a standard one dimensional branching Brownian motion, namely the sets of particles whose height is within a fixed distance from the order of the global maximum. It is well known that such particles congregate at large times in clusters of order-one genealogical diameter around local maxima which form a Cox process in the limit. We add to these results by finding the asymptotic size of extreme level sets and the typical height and shape of those clusters which carry such level sets. We also find the right tail decay of the distribution of the dist…
We consider an n-dimensional Brownian Motion trapped inside a bounded convex set by normally-reflecting boundaries. It is well-known that this process is uniformly ergodic. However, the rates of this ergodicity are not well-understood, especially in the regime of very high-dimensional sets. Here we present new bounds on these rates for convex sets with a given diameter. Our bounds do not depend upon the smoothness of the boundary nor the value of the ambient dimension, n.
In this paper we apply the spectral theory of linear diffusions to study the one-dimensional Liouville Brownian Motion and Liouville Brownian excursions from a given point. As an application we estimate the fractal dimensions of level sets of one-dimensional Liouville Brownian motion as well as various probabilistic asymptotic behaviours of Liouville Brownian motion and Liouville Brownian excursions.
Let $B$ denote the range of the Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ ($d\geq3$). For a deterministic Borel measure $ν$ on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ we wish to find a random measure $μ$ such that the support of $μ$ is contained in $B$ and it is a solution to the equation $E(μ(A))=ν(A)$ for every Borel set $A$. We discuss when it is possible to find a solution $μ$ and in that case we construct the solution. We study several properties of $μ$ such as the probability of $μ\neq0$ and we establish a formula for the expectation of the double integral with respect to $μ\timesμ$. We calculate $μ$ in terms of the…
Let $(\mathcal{T},d)$ be the random real tree with root $ρ$ coded by a Brownian excursion. So $(\mathcal{T},d)$ is (up to normalisation) Aldous CRT \cite{AldousI} (see Le Gall \cite{LG91}). The $a$-level set of $\mathcal{T}$ is the set $\mathcal{T}(a)$ of all points in $\mathcal{T}$ that are at distance $a$ from the root. We know from Duquesne and Le Gall \cite{DuLG06} that for any fixed $a\in (0, \infty)$, the measure $\ell^a$ that is induced on $\mathcal{T}(a)$ by the local time at $a$ of the Brownian excursion, is equal, up to a multiplicative constant, to the Hausdorff measure in $\mathcal…
We investigate the large scale structure of certain sojourn sets of one dimensional Brownian motion within two-sided moving boundaries. The macroscopic Hausdorff dimension, upper mass dimension and logarithmic density of these sets are computed. We also give a uniform macroscopic dimension result for the Brownian level sets.
In this paper, we derive explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels, in C^{1,1} open sets D in R^d, of a large class of subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components. When D is bounded, our sharp two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates hold for all t>0. Integrating the heat kernel estimates with respect to the time variable t, we obtain sharp two-sided estimates for the Green functions, in bounded C^{1,1} open sets, of such subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components.
We determine the exact Hausdorff measure functions for the range and level sets of a class of Gaussian random fields satisfying sectorial local nondeterminism and other assumptions. We also establish a Chung-type law of the iterated logarithm. The results can be applied to the Brownian sheet, fractional Brownian sheets whose Hurst indices are the same in all directions, and systems of linear stochastic wave equations in one spatial dimension driven by space-time white noise or colored noise.
We establish a boundary Harnack principle for a large class of subordinate Brownian motion, including mixtures of symmetric stable processes, in bounded $κ$-fat open set (disconnected analogue of John domains). As an application of the boundary Harnack principle, we identify the Martin boundary and the minimal Martin boundary of bounded $κ$-fat open sets with respect to these processes with their Euclidean boundary.
The large deviations analysis of solutions to stochastic differential equations and related processes is often based on approximation. The construction and justification of the approximations can be onerous, especially in the case where the process state is infinite dimensional. In this paper we show how such approximations can be avoided for a variety of infinite dimensional models driven by some form of Brownian noise. The approach is based on a variational representation for functionals of Brownian motion. Proofs of large deviations properties are reduced to demonstrating basic qualitative …
The times of Brownian local minima, maxima and their union are three distinct examples of local, stationary, dense, random countable sets associated with classical Wiener noise. Being local means, roughly, determined by the local behavior of the sample paths of the Brownian motion, and stationary means invariant relative to the Lévy shifts of the sample paths. We answer to the affirmative Tsirelson's question, whether or not there are any others, and develop some general theory for such sets. An extra ingredient to their structure, that of an honest indexation, leads to a splitting result that…
This paper concerns the intermediate dimensions, a spectrum of dimensions that interpolate between the Hausdorff and box dimensions. Potential theoretic methods are used to produce dimension bounds for images of sets under Hölder maps and certain stochastic processes. We apply this to compute the almost-sure value of the dimension of Borel sets under index-$α$ fractional Brownian motion in terms of dimension profiles defined using capacities. As a corollary, this establishes continuity of the profiles for Borel sets and allows us to obtain an explicit condition showing how the Hausdorff dimens…
Let $B^{α_i}$ be an $(N_i,d)$-fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index ${α_i}$ ($i=1,2$), and let $B^{α_1}$ and $B^{α_2}$ be independent. We prove that, if $\frac{N_1}{α_1}+\frac{N_2}{α_2}>d$, then the intersection local times of $B^{α_1}$ and $B^{α_2}$ exist, and have a continuous version. We also establish Hölder conditions for the intersection local times and determine the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the sets of intersection times and intersection points. One of the main motivations of this paper is from the results of Nualart and Ortiz-Latorre ({\it J. Theor. Probab.} {\bf 20} (…
We give asymptotic estimations on the area of the sets of points with large Brownian winding, and study the average winding between a planar Brownian motion and a Poisson point process of large intensity on the plane. This allows us to give a new definition of the Lévy area which does not rely on approximations of the Brownian path.
Robert Kaufman's proof that the set of rapid points of Brownian motion has a Fourier dimension equal to its Hausdorff dimension was first published in 1974. A study of the proof of the original paper revealed several gaps in the arguments and a slight inaccuracy in the main theorem. This paper presents a new version of the construction and incorporates some recent results in order to establish a corrected version of Kaufman's theorem. The method of proof can then be extended to show that functionally determined rapid points of Brownian motion also form Salem sets for absolutely continuous func…
This article investigates several properties related to densities of solutions X to differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/4. We first determine conditions for strict positivity of the density of X_t. Then we obtain some exponential bounds for this density when the diffusion coefficient satisfies an elliptic type condition. Finally, still in the elliptic case, we derive some bounds on the hitting probabilities of sets by fractional differential systems in terms of Newtonian capacities.
The spectral heat content is investigated for time-changed killed Brownian motions on C1,1 open sets, where the time change is given by either a subordinator or an inverse subordinator, with the underlying Laplace exponent being regularly varying at \infty with index β\in (0, 1). In the case of inverse subordinators, the asymptotic limit of the spectral heat content is shown to involve a probabilistic term depending only on β\in (0, 1). In contrast, in the case of subordinators, this universality holds only when β\in ( 1/2 , 1).
Consider the $λ$-Green function and the $λ$-Poisson kernel of a Lipschitz domain $U\subset \mathbb H^n=\left\{x\in\mathbb R^n:x_n>0\right\}$ for hyperbolic Brownian motion with drift. We provide several relationships that facilitate studying those objects and explain somehow theirs nature. As an application, we yield uniform estimates in case of sets of the form $S_{a,b}=\{x\in\mathbb H^n:x_n>a, x_1\in(0,b)\}$, $a,b>0$, $a,b>0$, which covers and extends existing results of that kind.
The set of zeros of a Brownian motion gives rise to a product system in the sense of William Arveson (that is, a continuous tensor product system of Hilbert spaces). Replacing the Brownian motion with a Bessel process we get a continuum of non-isomorphic product systems.
Suppose a solid has a crack filled with a gas. If the crack reaches the surrounding medium, how long does it take the gas to diffuse out of the crack? Iterated Brownian motion serves as a model for diffusion in a crack. If τis the first exit time of iterated Brownian motion from the solid, then P(τ>t) can be viewed as a measurement of the amount of contaminant left in the crack at time t. We determine the large time asymptotics of P(τ>t) for both bounded and unbounded sets. We also discuss a strange connection between iterated Brownian motion and the parabolic operator {1/8}Δ^2-\frac{\partial}…
We describe the size of the sets of sojourn times $E_γ=\{t\geq 0: |B_t|\leq t^γ\}$ associated with a fractional Brownian motion $B$ in terms of various large scale dimensions.
We study a spatial branching model, where the underlying motion is Brownian motion and the branching is affected by a random collection of reproduction blocking sets called "mild" obstacles. We show that the quenched local growth rate is given by the branching rate in the `free' region . When the underlying motion is an arbitrary diffusion process, we obtain a dichotomy for the local growth that is independent of the Poissonian intensity. Finally, and most importantly, we obtain the asymptotics (in probability) of the quenched (when $d\le 2$) and the annealed (arbitrary d) global growth rates,…
In this paper we study a subordinate Brownian motion with a Gaussian component and a rather general discontinuous part. The assumption on the subordinator is that its Laplace exponent is a complete Bernstein function with a Lévy density satisfying a certain growth condition near zero. The main result is a boundary Harnack principle with explicit boundary decay rate for non-negative harmonic functions of the process in $C^{1,1}$ open sets. As a consequence of the boundary Harnack principle, we establish sharp two-sided estimates on the Green function of the subordinate Brownian motion in any bo…
Let $B^{H}$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$, $f:[0,1]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function, and $E\subset[0,1]$, $F\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$ are given Borel sets. The focus of this paper is on hitting probabilities of the fractional Brownian motion $B^{H}$ with the deterministic drift $f$. It aims to highlight the role of the regularity properties of the drift $f$ as well as that of the dimension of $E$ in determining the upper and lower bounds of $\mathbb{P}\{(B^H+f)(E)\cap F\neq \emptyset \}$ for $F$ a subset of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and also fo…
It was shown by Antunović, Burdzy, Peres, and Ruscher that a Cantor function added to one-dimensional Brownian motion has zeros in the middle $α$-Cantor set, $α\in (0,1)$, with positive probability if and only if $α\neq 1/2$. We give a refined picture by considering a generalized version of middle 1/2-Cantor sets. By allowing the middle 1/2 intervals to vary in size around the value 1/2 at each iteration step we will see that there is a big class of generalized Cantor functions such that if these are added to one-dimensional Brownian motion, there are no zeros lying in the corresponding Cantor…
For a set $A\subset C[0,\infty)$, we give new results on the growth of the number of particles in a dyadic branching Brownian motion whose paths fall within A. We show that it is possible to work without rescaling the paths. We give large deviations probabilities as well as a more sophisticated proof of a result on growth in the number of particles along certain sets of paths. Our results reveal that the number of particles can oscillate dramatically. As a byproduct of our methods we also obtain new results on the number of particles near the frontier of the model. The methods used are entirel…
For any starting point in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we identify the stochastic differential equation that is satisfied by distorted Brownian motion with respect to a certain discontinuous Muckenhoupt $A_2$-weight $ψ$. The discontinuities of $ψ$ typically take place on a sequence of level sets of the Euclidean norm $D_k:=\{x\in \mathbb{R}^d\, | \;\|x\|=d_k\}$, $k\in\mathbb{Z}$, where $(d_k)_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}\subset (0,\infty)$ may have accumulation points and each level set $D_k$ plays the role of a permeable membrane.
A subordinate Brownian motion is a Lévy process which can be obtained by replacing the time of the Brownian motion by an independent subordinator. The infinitesimal generator of a subordinate Brownian motion is $-ϕ(-Δ)$, where $ϕ$ is the Laplace exponent of the subordinator. In this paper, we consider a large class of subordinate Brownian motions without diffusion component and with $ϕ$ comparable to a regularly varying function at infinity. This class of processes includes symmetric stable processes, relativistic stable processes, sums of independent symmetric stable processes, sums of indepe…
In 1962, Dyson introduced dynamics in random matrix models, in particular into GUE (also for beta=1 and 4), by letting the entries evolve according to independent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Dyson shows the spectral points of the matrix evolve according to non-intersecting Brownian motions. The present paper shows that the interlacing spectra of two consecutive principal minors form a Markov process (diffusion) as well. This diffusion consists of two sets of Dyson non-intersecting Brownian motions, with a specific interaction respecting the interlacing. This is revealed in the form of the ge…
The Brownian web is a random variable consisting of a Brownian motion starting from each space-time point on the plane. These are independent until they hit each other, at which point they coalesce. Tsirelson mentions this model in his paper "Scaling limit, Noise, Stability", along with planar percolation, in suggesting the existence of a two-dimensional black noise. A two-dimensional noise is, roughly speaking, a random object on the plane whose distribution is translation invariant and whose behavior on disjoint subsets is independent. Black means sensitive to the resampling of sets of arbit…
In order to compute the packing dimension of orthogonal projections Falconer and Howroyd (1997) introduced a family of packing dimension profiles ${\rm Dim}_s$ that are parametrized by real numbers $s>0$. Subsequently, Howroyd (2001) introduced alternate $s$-dimensional packing dimension profiles $\hbox{${\rm P}$-$\dim$}_s$ and proved, among many other things, that $\hbox{${\rm P}$-$\dim$}_s E={\rm Dim}_s E$ for all integers $s>0$ and all analytic sets $E\subseteq\R^N$. The goal of this article is to prove that $\hbox{${\rm P}$-$\dim$}_s E={\rm Dim}_s E$ for all real numbers $s>0$ and analytic…
Let $W$ denote $d$-dimensional Brownian motion. We find an explicit formula for the essential supremum of Hausdorff dimension of $W(E)\cap F$, where $E\subset(0,\infty)$ and $F\subset \mathbf {R}^d$ are arbitrary nonrandom compact sets. Our formula is related intimately to the thermal capacity of Watson [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 37 (1978) 342-362]. We prove also that when $d\ge2$, our formula can be described in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of $E\times F$, where $E\times F$ is viewed as a subspace of space time.
We consider Brownian motions and other processes (Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, spherical Brownian motions) on various sets of symmetric matrices constructed from algebra structures, and look at their associated spectral measure processes. This leads to the identification of the multiplicity of the eigenvalues, together with the identification of the spectral measures. For Clifford algebras, we thus recover Bott's periodicity.
A subordinate Brownian motion $X$ is a Lévy process which can be obtained by replacing the time of the Brownian motion by an independent subordinator. In this paper, when the Laplace exponent $ϕ$ of the corresponding subordinator satisfies some mild conditions, we first prove the scale invariant boundary Harnack inequality for $X$ on arbitrary open sets. Then we give an explicit form of sharp two-sided estimates on the Green functions of these subordinate Brownian motions in any bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set. As a consequence, we prove the boundary Harnack inequality for $X$ on any $C^{1,1}$ open…
In proving large deviation estimates, the lower bound for open sets and upper bound for compact sets are essentially local estimates. On the other hand, the upper bound for closed sets is global and compactness of space or an exponential tightness estimate is needed to establish it. In dealing with the occupation measure $L_t(A)=\frac{1}{t}\int_0^t{\1}_A(W_s) \d s$ of the $d$ dimensional Brownian motion, which is not positive recurrent, there is no possibility of exponential tightness. The space of probability distributions $\mathcal {M}_1(\R^d)$ can be compactified by replacing the usual topo…
We prove relative Fatou's theorem for nonnegative harmonic functions with respect to a large class of killed subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components in bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq 2$, which asserts the existence of nontangential limit of the ratio of two harmonic functions with respect to the killed processes. When $D=B(x_{0},r)$ is a ball we prove Fatou theorem. That is, we establish the existence of nontangential limit of a single nonnegative harmonic function. We also prove this is the best result possible by showing that there is a nonnegative harm…
We consider a family of fractional Brownian fields $\{B^{H}\}_{H\in (0,1)}$ on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, where $H$ denotes their Hurst parameter. We first define a rich class of normalizing kernels $ψ$ such that the covariance of $$ X^{H}(x) = Γ(H)^{\frac{1}{2}} \left( B^{H}(x) - \int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}} B^{H}(u) ψ(u, x)du\right), $$ converges to the covariance of a log-correlated Gaussian field when $H \downarrow 0$. We then use Berestycki's ``good points'' approach in order to derive the limiting measure of the so-called multiplicative chaos of the fractional Brownian field $$ M^{H}_γ(dx) = e^{γX^{H}(x…
