If $C_1$ is the convex hull of the curve of the standard Brownian motion in the complex plane watched from 0 to 1, we consider the convex hulls of $C_1$ and several rotations of it and we compute the mean of the length of their perimeter by elementary calculations.

We study the convex hull of the first $n$ steps of a planar random walk, and present large-$n$ asymptotic results on its perimeter length $L_n$, diameter $D_n$, and shape. In the case where the walk has a non-zero mean drift, we show that $L_n / D_n \to 2$ a.s., and give distributional limit theorems and variance asymptotics for $D_n$, and in the zero-drift case we show that the convex hull is infinitely often arbitrarily well-approximated in shape by any unit-diameter compact convex set containing the origin, and then $\liminf_{n \to \infty} L_n/D_n =2$ and $\limsup_{n \to \infty} L_n /D_n = …
In this paper, we analyze the stochastic properties of some large size (area) polyominoe's perimeter such that the directed column-convex polyomino, the column-convex polyomino, the directed diagonally-convex polyomino, the staircase (or parallelogram) polyomino, the escalier polyomino, the wall (or bargraph) polyomino. All polyominoes considered here are made of contiguous, not-empty columns, without holes, such that each column must be adjacent to some cell of the previous column. We compute the asymptotic (for large size $n$) Gaussian distribution of the perimeter, including the correspondi…
We prove large deviations principles (LDPs) for the perimeter and the area of the convex hull of a planar random walk with finite Laplace transform of its increments. We give explicit upper and lower bounds for the rate function of the perimeter in terms of the rate function of the increments. These bounds coincide and thus give the rate function for a wide class of distributions which includes the Gaussians and the rotationally invariant ones. For random walks with such increments, large deviations of the perimeter are attained by the trajectories that asymptotically align into line segments.…
We show that, under certain natural assumptions, large random plane bipartite maps with a boundary converge after rescaling to a one-parameter family ($\mathrm{BD}_L$, $0 < L < \infty$) of random metric spaces homeomorphic to the closed unit disk of $\mathbb{R}^2$, the space $\mathrm{BD}_L$ being called the Brownian disk of perimeter $L$ and unit area. These results can be seen as an extension of the convergence of uniform plane quadrangulations to the Brownian map, which intuitively corresponds to the limit case where $L = 0$. Similar results are obtained for maps following a Boltzmann distri…
We compute exactly the mean perimeter and the mean area of the convex hull of a $2$-d Brownian motion of duration $t$ and diffusion constant $D$, in the presence of resetting to the origin at a constant rate $r$. We show that for any $t$, the mean perimeter is given by $\langle L(t)\rangle= 2 π\sqrt{\frac{D}{r}}\, f_1(rt)$ and the mean area is given by $\langle A(t) \rangle= 2π\frac{D}{r}\, f_2(rt)$ where the scaling functions $f_1(z)$ and $f_2(z)$ are computed explicitly. For large $t\gg 1/r$, the mean perimeter grows extremely slowly as $\langle L(t)\rangle \propto \ln (rt)$ with time. Likew…
We consider the model of Brownian motion indexed by the Brownian tree. For every $r\geq 0$ and every connected component of the set of points where Brownian motion is greater than $r$, we define the boundary size of this component, and we then show that the collection of these boundary sizes evolves when $r$ varies like a well-identified growth-fragmentation process. We then prove that the same growth-fragmentation process appears when slicing a Brownian disk at height $r$ and considering the perimeters of the resulting connected components.
In this note we study the maximal perimeter of a convex set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with respect to various classes of measures. Firstly, we show that for a probability measure $μ$ on $ \mathbb{R}^n$, satisfying very mild assumptions, there exists a convex set of $μ$-perimeter at least $C\frac{\sqrt{n}}{\sqrt[4]{Var|X|} \sqrt{\mathbb{E}|X|}}.$ This implies, in particular, that for any isotropic log-concave measure $μ$ one may find a convex set of $μ$- perimeter of order $n^{\frac{1}{8}}$. Secondly, we derive a general upper bound of $Cn|| f||^{\frac{1}{n}}_{\infty}$ on the maximal perimeter of a con…
For the perimeter length and the area of the convex hull of the first $n$ steps of a planar random walk, we study $n \to \infty$ mean and variance asymptotics and establish non-Gaussian distributional limits. Our results apply to random walks with drift (for the area) and walks with no drift (for both area and perimeter length) under mild moments assumptions on the increments. These results complement and contrast with previous work which showed that the perimeter length in the case with drift satisfies a central limit theorem. We deduce these results from weak convergence statements for the c…

We introduce and study a new random surface which we call the hyperbolic Brownian plane and which is the near-critical scaling limit of the hyperbolic triangulations constructed in arXiv:1401.3297. The law of the hyperbolic Brownian plane is obtained after biasing the law of the Brownian plane arXiv:1204.5921 by an explicit martingale depending on its perimeter and volume processes studied in arXiv:1409.4026. Although the hyperbolic Brownian plane has the same local properties as those of the Brownian plane, its large scale structure is much different since we prove e.g. that is has exponentia…
Let a word be a sequence of $n$ i.i.d. integer random variables. The perimeter $P$ of the word is the number of edges of the word, seen as a polyomino. In this paper, we present a probabilistic approach to the computation of the moments of $P$. This is applied to uniform and geometric random variables. We also show that, asymptotically, the distribution of $P$ is Gaussian and, seen as a stochastic process, the perimeter converges in distribution to a Brownian motion
It is well known that for standard Brownian motion $ \{B(t), \;t \geq 0\}$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^d$ its convex hull $ V(t)=\conv \{\{\,B(s),\;s \leq t \}$ with probability 1 contains 0 as an interior point for each $t > 0$ (see \cite{E}). The aim of this note is to state the analoguos property for $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion.
We compute exactly the mean perimeter and area of the convex hull of N independent planar Brownian paths each of duration T, both for open and closed paths. We show that the mean perimeter < L_N > = α_N, \sqrt{T} and the mean area <A_N> = β_N T for all T. The prefactors α_N and β_N, computed exactly for all N, increase very slowly (logarithmically) with increasing N. This slow growth is a consequence of extreme value statistics and has interesting implication in ecological context in estimating the home range of a herd of animals with population size N.
This article contains both a point process and a sequential description of the greatest convex minorant of Brownian motion on a finite interval. We use these descriptions to provide new analysis of various features of the convex minorant such as the set of times where the Brownian motion meets its minorant. The equivalence of the these descriptions is non-trivial, which leads to many interesting identities between quantities derived from our analysis. The sequential description can be viewed as a Markov chain for which we derive some fundamental properties.
In this paper, we first review the penalization method for solving deterministic Skorokhod problems in non-convex domains and establish estimates for problems with $α$-Hölder continuous functions. With the help of these results obtained previously for deterministic problems, we pathwisely define the reflected $G$-Brownian motion and prove its existence and uniqueness in a Banach space. Finally, multi-dimensional reflected stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion are investigated via a fixed-point argument.
We consider an n-dimensional Brownian Motion trapped inside a bounded convex set by normally-reflecting boundaries. It is well-known that this process is uniformly ergodic. However, the rates of this ergodicity are not well-understood, especially in the regime of very high-dimensional sets. Here we present new bounds on these rates for convex sets with a given diameter. Our bounds do not depend upon the smoothness of the boundary nor the value of the ambient dimension, n.
We study the stationary reflected Brownian motion in a non-convex wedge, which, compared to its convex analogue model, has been much rarely analyzed in the probabilistic literature. We prove that its stationary distribution can be found by solving a two dimensional vector boundary value problem (BVP) on a single curve for the associated Laplace transforms. The reduction to this kind of vector BVP seems to be new in the literature. As a matter of comparison, one single boundary condition is sufficient in the convex case. When the parameters of the model (drift, reflection angles and covariance …
Consider an multidimensional obliquely reflected Brownian motion in the positive orthant, or, more generally, in a convex polyhedral cone. We find sufficient conditions for existence of a stationary distribution and convergence to this distribution at the exponential rate, as time goes to infinity. We also prove that certain exponential moments for this distribution are finite, thus providing a tail estimate for this distribution. Finally, we apply these results to systems of rank-based competing Brownian particles.
We study non-compact scaling limits of uniform random planar quadrangulations with a boundary when their size tends to infinity. Depending on the asymptotic behavior of the boundary size and the choice of the scaling factor, we observe different limiting metric spaces. Among well-known objects like the Brownian plane or the infinite continuum random tree, we construct two new one-parameter families of metric spaces that appear as scaling limits: the Brownian half-plane with skewness parameter $θ$ and the infinite-volume Brownian disk of perimeter $σ$. We also obtain various coupling and limit …
The fractional Brownian motion of index $0 < H < 1$, H-FBM, with d-dimensional time is considered on an expanding set TG, where G is a bounded convex domain that contains 0 at its boundary. The main result: if 0 is a point of smoothness of the boundary, then the log-asymptotics of probability that H-FBM does not exceed a fixed positive level in TG is $(H - d + o(1)) \log T$, $T\to\infty$. Some generalizations of this result to isotropic but not self-similar Gaussian processes with stationary increments are also considered.
Recently W. Lao and M. Mayer [6], [7], [9] considered $U$-max - statistics, where instead of sum appears the maximum over the same set of indices. Such statistics often appear in stochastic geometry. The examples are given by the largest distance between random points in a ball, the maximal diameter of a random polygon, the largest scalar product within a sample of points, etc. Their limit distribution is related to the distribution of extreme values. Among the interesting results obtained in [6], [7], [9] are limit theorems for the maximal perimeter and the maximal area of random triangles in…
In this note we prove that the local martingale part of a convex function f of a d-dimensional semimartingale X = M + A can be written in terms of an It^o stochastic integral \int H(X)dM, where H(x) is some particular measurable choice of subgradient of f at x, and M is the martingale part of X. This result was first proved by Bouleau in [2]. Here we present a new treatment of the problem. We first prove the result for X' = X + eB, e > 0, where B is a standard Brownian motion, and then pass to the limit as e tends to 0, using results in [1] and [4].
We establish an exact formula for the average number of edges appearing on the boundary of the global convex hull of n independent Brownian paths in the plane. This requires the introduction of a counting criterion which amounts to "cutting off" edges that are, in a specific sense, small. The main argument consists in a mapping between planar Brownian convex hulls and configurations of constrained, independent linear Brownian motions. This new formula is confirmed by retrieving an existing exact result on the average perimeter of the boundary of Brownian convex hulls in the plane.
Benjamini, Burdzy and Chen (2007) introduced the notion of a shy coupling: a coupling of a Markov process such that, for suitable starting points, there is a positive chance of the two component processes of the coupling staying a positive distance away from each other for all time. Among other results, they showed no shy couplings could exist for reflected Brownian motions in C^2 bounded convex planar domains whose boundaries contain no line segments. Here we use potential-theoretic methods to extend this Benjamini et al. result (a) to all bounded convex domains (whether planar and smooth or …
It is well known that for a standard Brownian motion (BM) $ \{B(t), \;t \geq 0\}$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^d$, its convex hull $ V(t)=\conv \{\{\,B(s),\;s \leq t \}$ with probability $1$ for each $t > 0$ contains $0$ as an interior point (see Evans (1985)). We also know that the winding number of a typical path of a $2$-dimensional BM is equal to $+\infty.$ The aim of this article is to show that these properties aren't specifically "Brownian", but hold for a much larger class of $d$-dimensional self similar processes. This class contains in particular $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian mot…
For the perimeter length $L_n$ and the area $A_n$ of the convex hull of the first $n$ steps of a planar random walk, this thesis study $n \to \infty$ mean and variance asymptotics and establish distributional limits. The results apply to random walks both with drift (the mean of random walk increments) and with no drift under mild moments assumptions on the increments. Assuming increments of the random walk have finite second moment and non-zero mean, Snyder and Steele showed that $n^{-1} L_n$ converges almost surely to a deterministic limit, and proved an upper bound on the variance Var$[ L_n…
Schreiber and Yukich [Ann. Probab. 36 (2008) 363-396] establish an asymptotic representation for random convex polytope geometry in the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^d, d\geq2$, in terms of the general theory of stabilizing functionals of Poisson point processes as well as in terms of generalized paraboloid growth processes. This paper further exploits this connection, introducing also a dual object termed the paraboloid hull process. Via these growth processes we establish local functional limit theorems for the properly scaled radius-vector and support functions of convex polytopes generated by high…
We study the scaling limit of the volume and perimeter of the discovered regions in the Markovian explorations known as peeling processes for infinite random planar maps such as the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT) or quadrangulation (UIPQ). In particular, our results apply to the metric exploration or peeling by layers algorithm, where the discovered regions are (almost) completed balls, or hulls, centered at the root vertex. The scaling limits of the perimeter and volume of hulls can be expressed in terms of the hull process of the Brownian plane studied in our previous work. Oth…
We consider a Brownian particle with diffusion coefficient $D$ in a $d$-dimensional ball of radius $R$ with reflecting boundaries. We study the maximum $M_x(t)$ of the trajectory of the particle along the $x$-direction at time $t$. In the long time limit, the maximum converges to the radius of the ball $M_x(t) \to R$ for $t\to \infty$. We investigate how this limit is approached and obtain an exact analytical expression for the distribution of the fluctuations $Δ(t) = [R-M_x(t)]/R$ in the limit of large $t$ in all dimensions. We find that the distribution of $Δ(t)$ exhibits a rich variety of b…
We consider the tail probabilities for Brownian exit time from a class of perturbed multi-strips in Euclidean plane. Under some assumptions we prove that the long stays in a perturbed multi-strip are more likely than those in a strip of the same width. This effect is related to the existence of the trapped modes in waveguides.
This paper calculates several useful statistical properties of the convex minorant process generated by random walk processes. In particular, we calculate the statistics of the longest segment in the convex minorant of a random walk of a given length. In addition, we calculate the probability that the convex minorant of a random walk of length N is composed of exactly m segments; we give an exact formula for the expected number of segments in the convex minorant. We obsevere that some of this analysis can be meaningful for the case of Brownian motion on finite intervals; we can calculate exact…
Let K be the convex hull of the path of a standard brownian motion B(t) in R^n, taken at time 0 < t < 1. We derive formulas for the expected volume and surface area of K. Moreover, we show that in order to approximate K by a discrete version of K, namely by the convex hull of a random walk attained by taking B(t_n) at discrete (random) times, the number of steps that one should take in order for the volume of the difference to be relatively small is of order n^3. Next, we show that the distribution of facets of K is in some sense scale invariant: for any given family of simplices (satisfying s…
For stationary, homogeneous Markov processes (viz., Lévy processes, including Brownian motion) in dimension $d\geq 3$, we establish an exact formula for the average number of $(d-1)$-dimensional facets that can be defined by $d$ points on the process's path. This formula defines a universality class in that it is independent of the increments' distribution, and it admits a closed form when $d=3$, a case which is of particular interest for applications in biophysics, chemistry and polymer science. We also show that the asymptotical average number of facets behaves as $\langle \mathcal{F}_T^{(d)…
We study the minimizers of the sum of the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue of the negative Laplacian and the perimeter with respect to a general norm in the class of Jordan domains in the plane. This is equivalent (modulo scaling) to minimizing the said eigenvalue (or the base frequency of a drum of this shape) subject to a hard constraint on the perimeter. We show that, for all norms, a minimizer exists, is unique up to spatial translations and is convex but not necessarily smooth. We give conditions on the norm that characterize the appearance of facets and corners. We also demonstrate that ne…
We consider an inventory system in which inventory level fluctuates as a Brownian motion in the absence of control. The inventory continuously accumulates cost at a rate that is a general convex function of the inventory level, which can be negative when there is a backlog. At any time, the inventory level can be adjusted by a positive or negative amount, which incurs a fixed positive cost and a proportional cost. The challenge is to find an adjustment policy that balances the inventory cost and adjustment cost to minimize the expected total discounted cost. We provide a tutorial on using a th…
This paper is part of a series aiming at proving that the $\limsup$ and $\liminf$ variants of Voiculescu's free entropy coincide. This is based on a Laplace principle (implying a large deviation principle) for hermitian brownian motion on $[0,1]$. In the current paper, we show that microstates free entropy $χ(X_1,...,X_m)$ and non-microstate free entropy $χ^*(X_1,...,X_m)$ coincide for self-adjoint variables $(X_1,...,X_m)$ satisfying a Schwinger-Dyson equation for subquadratic, bounded below, strictly convex potentials with Lipschitz derivative sufficiently approximable by non-commutative pol…
Consider a Brownian particle in three dimensions which is attracted by a plane with a strength proportional to some dimensionless parameter $α$. We investigate the fractal spatial structure of the visited lattice sites in a cubic lattice by the particle around and on the attractive plane. We compute the fractal dimensions of the set of visited sites both in three dimensions and on the attractive plane, as a function of the strength of attraction $α$. We also investigate the scaling properties of the size distribution of the clusters of nearest-neighbor visited sites on the attractive plane, an…
A formula due to Sudakov relates the first intrinsic volume of a convex set in a Hilbert space to the maximum of the isonormal Gaussian process over this set. Using this formula we compute the first intrinsic volumes of infinite-dimensional convex compact sets including unit balls with respect to Sobolev-type seminorms and ellipsoids in the Hilbert space. We relate the distribution of the random one-dimensional projections of these sets to the distributions $S_1,S_2,C_1,C_2$ studied by Biane, Pitman, Yor [Bull.\ AMS 38 (2001)]. We show that the $k$-th intrinsic volume of the set of all functio…
In this paper we study the statistical properties of convex hulls of $N$ random points in a plane chosen according to a given distribution. The points may be chosen independently or they may be correlated. After a non-exhaustive survey of the somewhat sporadic literature and diverse methods used in the random convex hull problem, we present a unifying approach, based on the notion of support function of a closed curve and the associated Cauchy's formulae, that allows us to compute exactly the mean perimeter and the mean area enclosed by the convex polygon both in case of independent as well as…
