The spectral heat content is investigated for time-changed killed Brownian motions on C1,1 open sets, where the time change is given by either a subordinator or an inverse subordinator, with the underlying Laplace exponent being regularly varying at \infty with index β\in (0, 1). In the case of inverse subordinators, the asymptotic limit of the spectral heat content is shown to involve a probabilistic term depending only on β\in (0, 1). In contrast, in the case of subordinators, this universality holds only when β\in ( 1/2 , 1).
In this paper, we consider a type of time-changed Markov process, where the time-change is an inverse killed subordinator. This can be seen as an extension of Chen (Chen, Z., Time fractional equations and probabilistic representation, Chaos Solitons and Fractals, 168-174, 2017). As a result, it constructs a one-to-one correspondence between general Bernstein functions (with infinite Lévy measure) and a class of generalized time-fractional partial differential equations.
We investigate the 3rd term of spectral heat content for killed subordinate and subordinate killed Brownian motions on a bounded open interval D = (a, b) in a real line when the underlying subordinators are stable subordinators with index αis in (1, 2) or α= 1. We prove that in the 3rd term of spectral heat content, one can observe the length b-a of the interval D.
We prove the Harnack inequality and boundary Harnack principle for the absolute value of a one-dimensional recurrent subordinate Brownian motion killed upon hitting $0$, when $0$ is regular for itself and the Laplace exponent of the subordinator satisfies certain global scaling conditions. Using the conditional gauge theorem for symmetric Hunt processes we prove that the Green function of this process killed outside of some interval $(a,b)$ is comparable to the Green function of the corresponding killed subordinate Brownian motion. We also consider several properties of the compensated resolve…
Minimal thinness is a notion that describes the smallness of a set at a boundary point. In this paper, we provide tests for minimal thinness for a large class of subordinate killed Brownian motions in bounded C1,1 domains, C1,1 domains with compact complements and domains above graphs of bounded C1,1 functions.
This note extends the results in [8] to construct the rough super-Brownian motion on finite volume with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The backbone of this study is the convergence of discrete approximations of the parabolic Anderson model (PAM) on a box.
In this paper we study the small time asymptotic behavior of the spectral heat content $\widetilde{Q}_D^{(α)}(t)$ of an arbitrary bounded $C^{1,1}$ domain $D$ with respect to the \textit{subordinate killed Brownian motion} in $D$ via an $(α/2)$-stable subordinator. For all $α\in (0,2)$, we establish a two-term small time expansion for $\widetilde{Q}_D^{(α)}(t)$ in all dimensions. When $α\in (1,2)$ and $d\geq 2$, we establish a three-term small time expansion for $\widetilde{Q}_D^{(α)}(t)$.
We study the spectral heat content for a class of open sets with fractal boundaries determined by similitudes in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq 1$, with respect to subordinate killed Brownian motions via $α/2$-stable subordinators and establish the asymptotic behavior of the spectral heat content as $t\to 0$ for the full range of $α\in (0,2)$. Our main theorems show that these asymptotic behaviors depend on whether the sequence of logarithms of the coefficients of the similitudes is arithmetic when $α\in [d-\b,2)$, where $\b$ is the interior Minkowski dimension of the boundary of the open set. The m…
Let $W^D$ be a killed Brownian motion in a domain $D\subset {\mathbb R}^d$ and $S$ an independent subordinator with Laplace exponent $ϕ$. The process $Y^D$ defined by $Y^D_t=W^D_{S_t}$ is called a subordinate killed Brownian motion. It is a Hunt process with infinitesimal generator $-ϕ(-Δ|_D)$, where $Δ|_D$ is the Dirichlet Laplacian. In this paper we study the potential theory of $Y^D$ under a weak scaling condition on the derivative of $ϕ$. We first show that non-negative harmonic functions of $Y^D$ satisfy the scale invariant Harnack inequality. Subsequently we prove two types of scale inva…
A subordinate Brownian motion is a Lévy process which can be obtained by replacing the time of the Brownian motion by an independent subordinator. The infinitesimal generator of a subordinate Brownian motion is $-ϕ(-Δ)$, where $ϕ$ is the Laplace exponent of the subordinator. In this paper, we consider a large class of subordinate Brownian motions without diffusion component and with $ϕ$ comparable to a regularly varying function at infinity. This class of processes includes symmetric stable processes, relativistic stable processes, sums of independent symmetric stable processes, sums of indepe…
We study the transition density of a standard two-dimensional Brownian motion killed when hitting a bounded Borel set $A$. We derive the asymptotic form of the density, say $p^A_t({\bf x},{\bf y})$, for large times $t$ and for ${\bf x}$ and ${\bf y}$ in the exterior of $A$ valid uniformly under the constraint $|{\bf x}|\vee |{\bf y}| =O(t)$. Within the parabolic regime $|{\bf x}|\vee |{\bf y}| = O(\sqrt t)$ in particular $p^A_t({\bf x},{\bf y})$ is shown to behave like $4e_A({\bf x})e_A({\bf y}) (\lg t)^{-2} p_t({\bf y}-{\bf x})$ for large $t$, where $p_t({\bf y}-{\bf x})$ is the transition ke…
We obtain sharp asymptotic estimates for hitting probabilities of a critical branching Brownian motion in one dimension with killing at 0 We also obtain sharp asymptotic formulas for the tail probabilities of the number of particles killed at 0. In the special case of double-or-nothing branching, we give exact formulas for both the hitting probabilities, in terms of elliptic functions, and the distribution of the number of killed particles.
Suppose that $(X_t)_{t \ge 0}$ is a one-dimensional Brownian motion with negative drift $-μ$. It is possible to make sense of conditioning this process to be in the state $0$ at an independent exponential random time and if we kill the conditioned process at the exponential time the resulting process is Markov. If we let the rate parameter of the random time go to $0$, then the limit of the killed Markov process evolves like $X$ conditioned to hit $0$, after which time it behaves as $X$ killed at the last time $X$ visits $0$. Equivalently, the limit process has the dynamics of the killed "bang…
For a spectrally negative Lévy process (snLp) $X$, killed according to a rate that is a function $ω$ of its position, we analyse the exit probability of the one-sided upwards-passage problem. When $ω$ is strictly positive, this problem is related to the determination of the Laplace transform of the first passage time upwards for $X$ that has been time-changed by the inverse of the additive functional $\int_0^\cdot ω(X_u)du$. In particular our findings thus shed extra light on related results concerning first passage times upwards (downwards) of spectrally negative positive self-similar Markov …
We consider the class of (possibly killed) spectrally positive Lévy process that have been time-changed by the inverse of an integral functional. Within this class we characterize the family of those processes which satisfy the following property: as functions of point of issue, the Laplace transforms of their first-passage times downwards are completely monotone. A wide (dense, in a sense) subfamily of this family admits closed form expressions for said Laplace transforms.
We prove relative Fatou's theorem for nonnegative harmonic functions with respect to a large class of killed subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components in bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq 2$, which asserts the existence of nontangential limit of the ratio of two harmonic functions with respect to the killed processes. When $D=B(x_{0},r)$ is a ball we prove Fatou theorem. That is, we establish the existence of nontangential limit of a single nonnegative harmonic function. We also prove this is the best result possible by showing that there is a nonnegative harm…
This paper studies time changes of Brownian motions by positive continuous additive functionals. Under a certain regularity condition on the associated Revuz measures, we prove that the resolvents of the time-changed Brownian motions are locally Hölder continuous in the spatial components. We also obtain lower bounds for the indice of the Hölder continuity.
Fractional Brownian motion (fBm) is a centered self-similar Gaussian process with stationary increments, which depends on a parameter $H \in (0, 1)$ called the Hurst index. The use of time-changed processes in modeling often requires the knowledge of their second order properties such as covariance function. This paper provides the explicit expression for the correlation structure for time-changed fractional Brownian motion. Several examples useful in applications are discussed.
We introduce a generalized mixed fractional Brownian motion (gmfBm) as a linear combination of two independent fractional Brownian motions with possibly different Hurst indices and investigate conditions under which the time-changed gmfBm exhibit long range dependence when the time-change is induced by a tempered stable subordinator or a Gamma process.
The generalized grey Brownian motion is a time continuous self-similar with stationary increments stochastic process whose one dimensional distributions are the fundamental solutions of a stretched time fractional differential equation. Moreover, the distribution of the time-changed Brownian motion by an inverse stable process solves the same equation, hence both processes have the same one dimensional distribution. In this paper we show the mutual singularity of the probability measures on the path space which are induced by generalized grey Brownian motion and the time-changed Brownian motio…
We prove strong small deviations results for Brownian motion under independent time-changes satisfying their own asymptotic criteria. We then apply these results to certain stochastic integrals which are elements of second-order homogeneous chaos.
In this paper, the stability behaviors of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by time-changed Brownian motions are discussed. Based on the generalized Lyapunov method and stochastic analysis, necessary conditions are provided for solutions of time-changed SDEs to be stable in differential senses, such as stochastic stability, stochastically asymptotic stability and globally stochastically asymptotic stability. Also, a connection between the stability of the solution to the time-changed SDEs and that to their corresponding non-time-changed SDEs is revealed by applying the duality th…
We consider a slightly subcritical branching Brownian motion with absorption, where particles move as Brownian motions with drift $-\sqrt{2+2\varepsilon}$, undergo dyadic fission at rate $1$, and are killed when they reach the origin. We obtain a Yaglom type asymptotic result, showing that the long run expected number of particles conditioned on survival grows exponentially as $1/\sqrt{\varepsilon}$ as the process approaches criticality.
We derive asymptotics for the quenched probability that a critical branching Brownian motion killed at a small rate in Poissonian obstacles exits a large domain. Results are formulated in terms of the solution to a semilinear partial differential equation with singular boundary conditions. The proofs depend on a quenched homogenization theorem for branching Brownian motion among mild obstacles.
In this paper we examine which Brownian Subordination with drift exhibits the symmetry property introduced by Fajardo and Mordecki (2006). We obtain that when the subordination results in a Lévy process, a necessary and sufficient condition for the symmetry to hold is that drift must be equal to -1/2.
We study a modification of the fractional analogue of the Brownian meander, which is Brownian motion conditioned to be positive on the time interval ${[0,1]}$. More precisely, we determine the weak limit of a fractional Brownian motion which is penalized -- instead of being killed -- when leaving the positive half-axis. In the Brownian case, we give a representation of the limiting process in terms of an explicit SDE and compare it to the SDE fulfilled by the Brownian meander.
The classical inverse first passage time problem asks whether, for a Brownian motion $(B_t)_{t\geq 0}$ and a positive random variable $ξ$, there exists a barrier $b:\mathbb{R}_+\to\mathbb{R}$ such that $\mathbb{P}\{B_s>b(s), 0\leq s \leq t\}=\mathbb{P}\{ξ>t\}$, for all $t\geq 0$. We study a variant of the inverse first passage time problem for killed Brownian motion. We show that if $λ>0$ is a killing rate parameter and $\mathbb{1}_{(-\infty,0]}$ is the indicator of the set $(-\infty,0]$ then, under certain compatibility assumptions, there exists a unique continuous function $b:\mathbb{R}_+\to…
We establish Harnack inequalities for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by a time-changed fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1/2)$. The Harnack inequality is dimension-free if the SDE has a drift which satisfies a one-sided Lipschitz condition, otherwise we still get Harnack-type estimates, but the constants will, in general, depend on the space dimension. Our proof is based on a coupling argument and a regularization argument for the time-change.
The inverse first passage time problem asks whether, for a Brownian motion $B$ and a nonnegative random variable $ζ$, there exists a time-varying barrier $b$ such that $\mathbb{P}\{B_s>b(s),0\leq s\leq t\}=\mathbb{P}\{ζ>t\}$. We study a "smoothed" version of this problem and ask whether there is a "barrier" $b$ such that $ \mathbb{E}[\exp(-λ\int_0^tψ(B_s-b(s))\,ds)]=\mathbb{P}\{ζ>t\}$, where $λ$ is a killing rate parameter, and $ψ:\mathbb{R}\to[0,1]$ is a nonincreasing function. We prove that if $ψ$ is suitably smooth, the function $t\mapsto \mathbb{P}\{ζ>t\}$ is twice continuously differentia…
This paper establishes a discretization scheme for a large class of stochastic differential equations driven by a time-changed Brownian motion with drift, where the time change is given by a general inverse subordinator. The scheme involves two types of errors: one generated by application of the Euler-Maruyama scheme and the other ascribed to simulation of the inverse subordinator. With the two errors carefully examined, the orders of strong and weak convergence are derived. Numerical examples are attached to support the convergence results.
Stochastic processes time-changed by an inverse subordinator have been suggested as a way to model the price of assets in illiquid markets, where the jumps of the subordinator correspond to periods of time where one is unable to sell an asset. We develop an excursion theory for time-changed reflected Brownian motion and use this to express the price of certain European options with Parisian barrier condition in terms of solutions of a time-fractional PDE. We provide a general description of the occupation measures of time-changed processes and use this to prove a Ray-Knight theorem for the occ…
We study a correlated Brownian motion in two dimensions, which is reflected, stopped or killed in a wedge represented as the intersection of two half spaces. First, we provide explicit density formulas, hinted by the method of images. These explicit expressions rely on infinite oscillating sums of Bessel functions and may demand computationally costly procedures. We propose suitable recursive algorithms for the simulation of the laws of reflected and stopped Brownian motion which are based on generalizations of the reflection principle in two dimensions. We study and give bounds for the comple…
The rate of strong convergence is investigated for an approximation scheme for a class of stochastic differential equations driven by a time-changed Brownian motion, where the random time changes $(E_t)_{t\ge 0}$ considered include the inverses of stable and tempered stable subordinators as well as their mixtures. Unlike those in the work of Jum and Kobayashi (2016), the coefficients of the stochastic differential equations discussed in this paper depend on the regular time variable $t$ rather than the time change $E_t$. This alteration makes it difficult to apply the method used in that paper…
Let $D$ be an unbounded domain in $\RR^d$ with $d\geq 3$. We show that if $D$ contains an unbounded uniform domain, then the symmetric reflecting Brownian motion (RBM) on $\overline D$ is transient. Next assume that RBM $X$ on $\overline D$ is transient and let $Y$ be its time change by Revuz measure ${\bf 1}_D(x) m(x)dx$ for a strictly positive continuous integrable function $m$ on $\overline D$. We further show that if there is some $r>0$ so that $D\setminus \overline {B(0, r)}$ is an unbounded uniform domain, then $Y$ admits one and only one symmetric diffusion that genuinely extends it and…
Consider the intersection measure $\ell^{\mathrm{IS}}_t$ of $p$ independent Brownian motions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this article, we prove the large deviation principle for the normalized intersection measure $t^{-p}\ell^{\mathrm{IS}}_t$ as $t\rightarrow \infty$, before exiting a (possibly unbounded) domain $D\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ with smooth boundary. This is an extension of [W. König and C. Mukherjee: Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, 66(2):263--306, 2013] which deals with the case $D$ is bounded. Our essential contribution is to prove the so-called super-exponential estimate for…
We extend the ideas of (Barbour 1990) and use Stein's method to obtain a bound on the distance between a scaled time-changed random walk and a time-changed Brownian Motion. We then apply this result to bound the distance between a time-changed compensated scaled Poisson process and a time-changed Brownian Motion. This allows us to bound the distance between a process whose dynamics resemble those of the Moran model with mutation and a process whose dynamics resemble those of the Wright-Fisher diffusion with mutation upon noting that the former may be expressed as a difference of two time-chang…
Particle approximations for certain nonlinear and nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations are studied using a system of Brownian motions with killing. The system is described by a collection of i.i.d. Brownian particles where each particle is killed independently at a rate determined by the empirical sub-probability measure of the states of the particles alive. A large deviation principle (LDP) for such sub-probability measure-valued processes is established. Along the way a convenient variational representation, which is of independent interest, for expectations of nonnegative functionals of Br…
If $X(t,x)$ is the density of one-dimensional super-Brownian motion, we prove that $\text{dim}(\partial\{x:X(t,x)>0\})=2-2λ_0\in(0,1)$ a.s. on $\{X_t\neq 0\}$, where $-λ_0\in(-1,-1/2)$ is the lead eigenvalue of a killed Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This confirms a conjecture of Mueller, Mytnik and Perkins who proved the above with positive probability. To establish this result we derive some new basic properties of a recently introduced boundary local time and analyze the behaviour of $X(t,\cdot)$ near the upper edge of its support. Numerical estimates of $λ_0$ suggest that the above Hausdorff …
A time-changed mixed fractional Brownian motion is an iterated process constructed as the superposition of mixed fractional Brownian motion and other process. In this paper we consider mixed fractional Brownian motion of parameters a, b and H\in(0, 1) time-changed by two processes, gamma and tempered stable subordinators. We present their main properties paying main attention to the long range dependence. We deduce that the fractional Brownian motion time-changed by gamma and tempered stable subordinators has long range dependence property for all H\in(0, 1).
We consider a branching Brownian motion with linear drift in which particles are killed on exiting the interval (0,K) and study the evolution of the process on the event of survival as the width of the interval shrinks to the critical value at which survival is no longer possible. We combine spine techniques and a backbone decomposition to obtain exact asymptotics for the near-critical survival probability. This allows us to deduce the existence of a quasi-stationary limit result for the process conditioned on survival which reveals that the backbone thins down to a spine as we approach critic…
The aim of this paper is to evaluate geometric Asian option by a mixed fractional subdiffusive Black-Scholes model. We derive a pricing formula for geometric Asian option when the underlying stock follows a time changed mixed fractional Brownian motion. We then apply the results to price Asian power options on the stocks that pay constant dividends when the payoff is a power function. Finally, lower bound of Asian options and some special cases are provided.
We consider the Wiener sausage among Poissonian obstacles. The obstacle is called hard if Brownian motion entering the obstacle is immediately killed, and is called soft if it is killed at certain rate. It is known that Brownian motion conditioned to survive among obstacles is confined in a ball near its starting point. We show the weak law of large numbers, large deviation principle in special cases and the moment asymptotics for the volume of the corresponding Wiener sausage. One of the consequence of our results is that the trajectory of Brownian motion almost fills the confinement ball.
A time-changed fractional mixed fractional Brownian motion by inverse alpha stable subordinator with index alpha in (0, 1) is an iterated process L constructed as the superposition of fractional mixed fractional Brownian motion N(a, b) and an independent inverse α-stable subordinator Talpha. In this paper we prove that the process LT alpha(a, b) is of long range dependence property under a smooth condition on the Hirsh index H1 and H2. We deduce that the fractional mixed fractional Brownian motion has long range dependence for every H1 < H2.
