A subordinate Brownian motion is a Lévy process which can be obtained by replacing the time of the Brownian motion by an independent subordinator. The infinitesimal generator of a subordinate Brownian motion is $-ϕ(-Δ)$, where $ϕ$ is the Laplace exponent of the subordinator. In this paper, we consider a large class of subordinate Brownian motions without diffusion component and with $ϕ$ comparable to a regularly varying function at infinity. This class of processes includes symmetric stable processes, relativistic stable processes, sums of independent symmetric stable processes, sums of independent relativistic stable processes, and much more. We give sharp two-sided estimates on the Green functions of these subordinate Brownian motions in any bounded $κ$-fat open set $D$. When $D$ is a bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set, we establish an explicit form of the estimates in terms of the distance to the boundary. As a consequence of such sharp Green function estimates, we obtain a boundary Harnack principle in $C^{1,1}$ open sets with explicit rate of decay.
We investigate the 3rd term of spectral heat content for killed subordinate and subordinate killed Brownian motions on a bounded open interval D = (a, b) in a real line when the underlying subordinators are stable subordinators with index αis in (1, 2) or α= 1. We prove that in the 3rd term of spectral heat content, one can observe the length b-a of the interval D.
We prove the Harnack inequality and boundary Harnack principle for the absolute value of a one-dimensional recurrent subordinate Brownian motion killed upon hitting $0$, when $0$ is regular for itself and the Laplace exponent of the subordinator satisfies certain global scaling conditions. Using the conditional gauge theorem for symmetric Hunt processes we prove that the Green function of this process killed outside of some interval $(a,b)$ is comparable to the Green function of the corresponding killed subordinate Brownian motion. We also consider several properties of the compensated resolve…
Minimal thinness is a notion that describes the smallness of a set at a boundary point. In this paper, we provide tests for minimal thinness for a large class of subordinate killed Brownian motions in bounded C1,1 domains, C1,1 domains with compact complements and domains above graphs of bounded C1,1 functions.
In this paper we study the small time asymptotic behavior of the spectral heat content $\widetilde{Q}_D^{(α)}(t)$ of an arbitrary bounded $C^{1,1}$ domain $D$ with respect to the \textit{subordinate killed Brownian motion} in $D$ via an $(α/2)$-stable subordinator. For all $α\in (0,2)$, we establish a two-term small time expansion for $\widetilde{Q}_D^{(α)}(t)$ in all dimensions. When $α\in (1,2)$ and $d\geq 2$, we establish a three-term small time expansion for $\widetilde{Q}_D^{(α)}(t)$.
We study the spectral heat content for a class of open sets with fractal boundaries determined by similitudes in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq 1$, with respect to subordinate killed Brownian motions via $α/2$-stable subordinators and establish the asymptotic behavior of the spectral heat content as $t\to 0$ for the full range of $α\in (0,2)$. Our main theorems show that these asymptotic behaviors depend on whether the sequence of logarithms of the coefficients of the similitudes is arithmetic when $α\in [d-\b,2)$, where $\b$ is the interior Minkowski dimension of the boundary of the open set. The m…
Let $W^D$ be a killed Brownian motion in a domain $D\subset {\mathbb R}^d$ and $S$ an independent subordinator with Laplace exponent $ϕ$. The process $Y^D$ defined by $Y^D_t=W^D_{S_t}$ is called a subordinate killed Brownian motion. It is a Hunt process with infinitesimal generator $-ϕ(-Δ|_D)$, where $Δ|_D$ is the Dirichlet Laplacian. In this paper we study the potential theory of $Y^D$ under a weak scaling condition on the derivative of $ϕ$. We first show that non-negative harmonic functions of $Y^D$ satisfy the scale invariant Harnack inequality. Subsequently we prove two types of scale inva…
We prove explicit and sharp two-sided estimates for the transition density of the Langevin process with quadratic potential, killed outside of the position interval (0,1). The long-time asymptotics of this transition density are also obtained. In particular, this allows us to show that the killed semigroup is uniformly conditionally ergodic.
We prove relative Fatou's theorem for nonnegative harmonic functions with respect to a large class of killed subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components in bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq 2$, which asserts the existence of nontangential limit of the ratio of two harmonic functions with respect to the killed processes. When $D=B(x_{0},r)$ is a ball we prove Fatou theorem. That is, we establish the existence of nontangential limit of a single nonnegative harmonic function. We also prove this is the best result possible by showing that there is a nonnegative harm…
Let $Z$ be a subordinate Brownian motion in ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\ge 2$, via a subordinator with Laplace exponent $ϕ$. We kill the process $Z$ upon exiting a bounded open set $D\subset {\mathbb R}^d$ to obtain the killed process $Z^D$, and then we subordinate the process $Z^D$ by a subordinator with Laplace exponent $ψ$. The resulting process is denoted by $Y^D$. Both $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are assumed to satisfy certain weak scaling conditions at infinity. We study the potential theory of $Y^D$, in particular the boundary theory. First, in case that $D$ is a $κ$-fat bounded open set, we show that the Harn…
In this paper, we derive explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels, in C^{1,1} open sets D in R^d, of a large class of subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components. When D is bounded, our sharp two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates hold for all t>0. Integrating the heat kernel estimates with respect to the time variable t, we obtain sharp two-sided estimates for the Green functions, in bounded C^{1,1} open sets, of such subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components.
We consider a subordinate Brownian motion $X$ with Gaussian components when the scaling order of purely discontinuous part is between $0$ and $2$ including $2$. In this paper we establish sharp two-sided bounds for transition density of $X$ in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and $C^{1,1}$-open sets. As a corollary, we obtain a sharp Green function estimates.
In this paper, we establish sharp two-sided estimates for transition densities of a large class of subordinate Markov processes. As applications, we show that the parabolic Harnack inequality and Hölder regularity hold for parabolic functions of such processes, and derive sharp two-sided Green function estimates.
In this paper, we discuss estimates of transition densities of subordinate Brownian motions in open subsets of Euclidean space. When $D$ is a $C^{1,1}$ domain, we establish sharp two-sided estimates for the transition densities of a large class of subordinate Brownian motions in $D$ whose scaling order is not necessarily strictly below $2$. Our estimates are explicit and written in terms of the dimension, the Euclidean distance between two points, the distance to the boundary and Laplace exponent of the corresponding subordinator only.
For a spectrally negative Lévy process (snLp) $X$, killed according to a rate that is a function $ω$ of its position, we analyse the exit probability of the one-sided upwards-passage problem. When $ω$ is strictly positive, this problem is related to the determination of the Laplace transform of the first passage time upwards for $X$ that has been time-changed by the inverse of the additive functional $\int_0^\cdot ω(X_u)du$. In particular our findings thus shed extra light on related results concerning first passage times upwards (downwards) of spectrally negative positive self-similar Markov …
In this paper we study a subordinate Brownian motion with a Gaussian component and a rather general discontinuous part. The assumption on the subordinator is that its Laplace exponent is a complete Bernstein function with a Lévy density satisfying a certain growth condition near zero. The main result is a boundary Harnack principle with explicit boundary decay rate for non-negative harmonic functions of the process in $C^{1,1}$ open sets. As a consequence of the boundary Harnack principle, we establish sharp two-sided estimates on the Green function of the subordinate Brownian motion in any bo…
We study one-dimensional Levy processes with Levy-Khintchine exponent psi(xi^2), where psi is a complete Bernstein function. These processes are subordinate Brownian motions corresponding to subordinators, whose Levy measure has completely monotone density; or, equivalently, symmetric Levy processes whose Levy measure has completely monotone density on the positive half-line. Examples include symmetric stable processes and relativistic processes. The main result is a formula for the generalized eigenfunctions of transition operators of the process killed after exiting the half-line. A generali…
In this article we study transition probabilities of a class of subordinate Brownian motions. Under mild assumptions on the Laplace exponent of the corresponding subordinator, sharp two sided estimates of the transition probability are established. This approach, in particular, covers subordinators with Laplace exponents that vary regularly at infinity with index one, e.g. \[ ϕ(λ)=\fracλ{\log(1+λ)}-1 \quad \text{ or }\quad ϕ(λ)=\fracλ{\log(1+λ^{β/2})},\ β\in (0,2)\, \] that correspond to subordinate Brownian motions with scaling order that is not necessarily strictly between 0 and 2. These est…
We provide sharp two-sided estimates of the Fourier-Bessel heat kernel and we give sharp two-sided estimates of the transition probability density for the Bessel process in (0,1) killed at 1 and killed or reflected at 0.
In this paper we solve the exit problems for an one-sided Markov additive process (MAP) which is exponentially killed with a bivariate killing intensity $ω(\cdot,\cdot)$ dependent on the present level of the process and the present state of the environment. Moreover, we analyze respective resolvents. All identities are given in terms of new generalizations of classical scale matrices for the MAP. We also remark on a number of applications of the obtained identities to (controlled) insurance risk processes. In particular, we show that our results can be applied to the so-called Omega model, whe…
For a random walk on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}$ that is attracted to a strictly stable process with index $α\in (1, 2)$ we obtain the asymptotic form of the transition probability for the walk killed when it hits a finite set. The asymptotic forms obtained are valid uniformly in a natural range of the space and time variables. The situation is relatively simple when the limit stable process has jumps in both positive and negative directions; in the other case when the jumps are one sided rather interesting matters are involved and detailed analyses are necessitated.
A subordinate Brownian motion $X$ is a Lévy process which can be obtained by replacing the time of the Brownian motion by an independent subordinator. In this paper, when the Laplace exponent $ϕ$ of the corresponding subordinator satisfies some mild conditions, we first prove the scale invariant boundary Harnack inequality for $X$ on arbitrary open sets. Then we give an explicit form of sharp two-sided estimates on the Green functions of these subordinate Brownian motions in any bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set. As a consequence, we prove the boundary Harnack inequality for $X$ on any $C^{1,1}$ open…
In this paper, we consider a large class of subordinate Brownian motions $X$ via subordinators with Laplace exponents which are complete Bernstein functions satisfying some mild scaling conditions at zero and at infinity. We first discuss how such conditions govern the behavior of the subordinator and the corresponding subordinate Brownian motion for both large and small time and space. Then we establish a global uniform boundary Harnack principle in (unbounded) open sets for the subordinate Brownian motion. When the open set satisfies the interior and exterior ball conditions with radius $R >…
We introduce a class of stochastic processes based on symmetric $α$-stable processes. These are obtained by taking Markov processes and replacing the time parameter with the modulus of a symmetric $α$-stable process. We call them $α$-time processes. They generalize Brownian time processes studied in \cite{allouba1, allouba2, allouba3}, and they introduce new interesting examples. We establish the connection of $α-$time processes to some higher order PDE's for $α$ rational. We also study the exit problem for $α$-time processes as they exit regular domains and connect them to elliptic PDE's. We …
In this paper, we consider a large class of purely discontinuous rotationally symmetric Levy processes. We establish sharp two-sided estimates for the transition densities of such processes killed upon leaving an open set D. When D is a κ-fat open set, the sharp two-sided estimates are given in terms of surviving probabilities and the global transition density of the Levy process. When D is a C^{1, 1} open set and the Levy exponent of the process is given by Ψ(ξ)= ϕ(|ξ|^2) with ϕbeing a complete Bernstein function satisfying a mild growth condition at infinity, our two-sided estimates are expl…
In this paper, we study transition density functions for pure jump unimodal Lévy processes killed upon leaving an open set $D$. Under some mild assumptions on the Lévy density, we establish two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates when the open set $D$ is $C^{1, 1}$. Our result covers the case that the Lévy densities of unimodal Lévy processes are regularly varying functions whose indices are equal to the Euclidean dimension. This is the first results on two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for Lévy processes such that the weak lower scaling index of the Lévy densities is not necessarily…
In this paper we address the question of finding the best $L^p$-norm constant for martingale transforms with one-sided orthogonality. We consider two martingales on a probability space with filtration $\mathcal{B}$ generated by a two-dimensional Brownian motion $B_t$. One is differentially subordinated to the other. Here we find the sharp estimate for subordinate martingales if the subordinated martingale is orthogonal and $1<p<2$, and we find the best constant if $p>2$, but the orthogonal martingale is a subordinator. The answers are given in terms of zeros of Laguerre polynomials. As an appl…
In the recent article Döring et al. [4] the authors conditioned a stable process with two-sided jumps to avoid an interval. As usual the strategy was to find an invariant function for the process killed on entering the interval and to show that the corresponding h-transformed process is indeed the process conditioned to avoid an interval in a meaningful way. In the present article we consider the case of a completely asymmetric stable process. It turns out that the invariant function found in [4] does not exist or is not invariant but nonetheless, we will characterize the conditioned process a…
The present paper introduces a jump-diffusion extension of the classical diffusion default intensity model by means of subordination in the sense of Bochner. We start from the bi-variate process $(X,D)$ of a diffusion state variable $X$ driving default intensity and a default indicator process $D$ and time change it with a Lévy subordinator ${\mathcal{T}}$. We characterize the time-changed process $(X^ϕ_t,D^ϕ_t)=(X({\mathcal{T}}_t),D({\mathcal{T}}_t))$ as a Markovian--Itô semimartingale and show from the Doob--Meyer decomposition of $D^ϕ$ that the default time in the time-changed model has a j…
We prove a spectral upper bound for the torsion function of symmetric stable processes that holds for convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our bound is explicit and captures the correct order of growth in $d$, improving upon the existing results of Giorgi and Smits (2010) and Biswas and Lőrinczi (2019). Along the way, we make progress towards a torsion analogue of Chen and Song's (2005) two-sided eigenvalue estimates for subordinate Brownian motion.
For $d\ge 2$ and $0<β<α<2$, consider a family of non-local operators $\mathcal{L}^{b}=Δ^{α/2}+\mathcal{S}^{b}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $$ \mathcal{S}^{b}f(x):=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{A}(d,-β)\int_{ \{z\in \mathbb{R}^d: |z|>\varepsilon\}} (f(x+z)-f(x))\frac{b(x,z)}{|z|^{d+β}}\,dz, $$ and $b(x,z)$ is a bounded measurable function on $\mathbb{R}^{d}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with $b(x,z)=b(x,-z)$ for every $x,z\in\mathbb{R}^{d}$. Here ${\cal A}(d, -β)$ is a normalizing constant so that $\mathcal{S}^b=-(-Δ)^{β/2}$ when $b(x, z)\equiv 1$. It was recently shown in Chen and Wang [arXiv:1312.7594 …
For $d\geq 1$ and $0<β<α<2$, consider a family of pseudo differential operators $\{Δ^α + a^βΔ^{β/2}; a \in [0, 1]\}$ that evolves continuously from $Δ^{α/2}$ to $ Δ^{α/2}+ Δ^{β/2}$. It gives arise to a family of Lévy processes \{$X^a, a\in [0, 1]\}$, where each $X^a$ is the sum of independent a symmetric $α$-stable process and a symmetric $β$-stable process with weight $a$. For any $C^{1,1}$ open set $D$, we establish explicit sharp two-sided estimates (uniform in $a\in [0,1]$) for the transition density function of the subprocess $X^{a, D}$ of $X^a$ killed upon leaving the open set $D$. The i…
Motivated by some recent potential theoretic results on subordinate killed Lévy processes in open subsets of the Euclidean space, we study processes in an open set $D\subset {\mathbb R}^d$ defined via Dirichlet forms with jump kernels of the form $J^D(x,y)=j(|x-y|)\mathcal{B}(x,y)$ and critical killing functions. Here $j(|x-y|)$ is the Lévy density of an isotropic stable process (or more generally, a pure jump isotropic unimodal Lévy process) in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The main novelty is that the term $\mathcal{B}(x,y)$ tends to 0 when $x$ or $y$ approach the boundary of $D$. Under some general assum…
