We introduce a class of stochastic processes based on symmetric $α$-stable processes.
These are obtained by taking Markov processes and replacing the time parameter with the modulus of a symmetric $α$-stable process. We call them $α$-time processes. They generalize Brownian time processes studied in \cite{allouba1, allouba2, allouba3}, and they introduce new interesting examples. We establish the connection of
$α-$time processes to some higher order PDE's for $α$ rational. We also study the exit problem for $α$-time processes as they exit regular domains and connect them to elliptic PDE's. We also obtain the PDE connection of subordinate killed Brownian motion in bounded domains of regular boundary.
In this paper, we consider the composition of two independent processes : one process corresponds to position and the other one to time. Such processes will be called iterated processes. We first propose an algorithm based on the Euler scheme to simulate the trajectories of the corresponding iterated processes on a fixed time interval. This algorithm is natural and can be implemented easily. We show that it converges almost surely, uniformly in time, with a rate of convergence of order 1/4 and propose an estimation of the error. We then extend the well known Feynman- Kac formula which gives a …
We derive logarithmic asymptotics of probabilities of small deviations for iterated processes in the space of trajectories. We find conditions under which these asymptotics coincide with those of processes generating iterated processes. When these conditions fail the asymptotics are quite different.
Based on two-sided heat kernel estimates for a class of symmetric jump processes on metric measure spaces, the laws of the iterated logarithm (LILs) for sample paths, local times and ranges are established. In particular, the LILs are obtained for $β$-stable-like processes on $α$-sets with $β>0$.
We survey the results in Nane (E. Nane, Higher order PDE's and iterated processes, Trans. American Math. Soc. (to appear)) and Baeumer, Meerschaert, and Nane (B. Baeumer, M.M. Meerschaert and E. Nane, Brownian subordinators and fractional Cauchy problems: Submitted (2007)) which deal with PDE connection of some iterated processes, and obtain a new probabilistic proof of the equivalence of the higher order PDE's and fractional in time PDE's.
We derive general results on the small deviation behavior for some classes of iterated processes. This allows us, in particular, to calculate the rate of the small deviations for $n$-iterated Brownian motions and, more generally, for the iteration of $n$ fractional Brownian motions. We also give a new and correct proof of some results in E. Nane, Laws of the iterated logarithm for $α$-time Brownian motion, Electron. J. Probab. 11 (2006), no. 18, 434--459.
We present sufficient conditions, in terms of the jumping kernels, for two large classes of conservative Markov processes of pure-jump type to be purely discontinuous martingales with finite second moment. As an application, we establish the law of the iterated logarithm for sample paths of the associated processes.
The solution of a (stochastic) differential equation (SDE) can be locally approximated by a stochastic expansion, a linear combination of iterated integrals. Quantities of interest, like moments, can then be approximated with the expansion. We present a formula for the case where the drivers of the equation are time and Wiener processes. We also present a Mathematica implementation of the result.
Consider the $n$th iterated Brownian motion $I^{(n)}=B_n \circ\cdots \circ B_1$. Curien and Konstantopoulos proved that for any distinct numbers $t_i\neq 0$, $(I^{(n)}(t_1),\dots,I^{(n)}(t_k))$ converges in distribution to a limit $I[k]$ independent of the $t_i$'s, exchangeable, and gave some elements on the limit occupation measure of $I^{(n)}$. Here, we prove under some conditions, finite dimensional distributions of $n$th iterated two-sided stable processes converge, and the same holds the reflected Brownian motions. We give a description of the law of $I[k]$, of the finite dimensional dist…
In this paper, we obtain explicit product and moment formulas for products of iterated integrals generated by families of square integrable martingales associated with an arbitrary Lévy process. We propose a new approach applying the theory of compensated-covariation stable families of martingales. Our main tool is a representation formula for products of elements of a compensated-covariation stable family, which enables to consider Lévy processes, with both jumps and Gaussian part.
We derive a novel framework called Bi-Directional Grid Constrained (BGC) stochastic processes in which the further an Ito diffusion drifts away from the origin, then the further it will be constrained. By making suitable modifications to the Law of Iterated Logarithm (LIL), we derive a novel theorem about the upper and lower bounds for BGC processes and their hidden barrier. To visualize the theorem, we run many simulations of the Ito diffusions for a representative expression for lambda(X, t), both before and after BGC and uncover some interesting results with applications into finance and ma…
We study the upper tail behaviors of the local times of the additive Lévy processes and additive random walks. The limit forms we establish are the moderate deviations and the laws of the iterated logarithm for the L_2-norms of the local times and for the local times at a fixed site.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of supremum distribution of some classes of iterated stochastic processes $\{X(Y(t)) : t \in [0, \infty)\}$, where $\{X(t) : t \in \mathbb{R} \}$ is a centered Gaussian process and $\{Y(t): t \in [0, \infty)\}$ is an independent of $\{X(t)\}$ stochastic process with a.s. continuous sample paths. In particular, the asymptotic behavior of $\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{s \in [0,T]} X(Y(s)) > u\right)$ as $u \to \infty$, where $T > 0$, as well as $\lim_{u\to\infty} \mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{s \in [0, h(u)]} X(Y(s)) > u\right)$, for some suitably chosen function…
Let $X=\{X(t), t\geq 0\}$ be a Brownian motion or a spectrally negative stable process of index $1<\a<2$. Let $E=\{E(t),t\geq 0\}$ be the hitting time of a stable subordinator of index $0<β<1$ independent of $X$. We use a connection between $X(E(t))$ and the stable subordinator of index $β/\a$ to derive information on the path behavior of $X(E_t)$. This is an extension of the connection of iterated Brownian motion and (1/4)-stable subordinator due to Bertoin \cite{bertoin}. Using this connection, we obtain various laws of the iterated logarithm for $X(E(t))$. In particular, we establish law of…
Continuing from arXiv:2102.01917v2, in this paper, we discuss general criteria and forms of liminf laws of iterated logarithm (LIL) for continuous-time Markov processes. Under some minimal assumptions, which are weaker than those in arXiv:2102.01917v2, we establish liminf LIL at zero (at infinity, respectively) in general metric measure spaces. In particular, our assumptions for liminf law of LIL at zero and the form of liminf LIL are truly local so that we can cover highly space-inhomogenous cases. Our results cover all examples in arXiv:2102.01917v2 including random conductance models with l…
We discuss joint temporal and contemporaneous aggregation of $N$ independent copies of strictly stationary AR(1) and INteger-valued AutoRegressive processes of order 1 (INAR(1)) with random coefficient $α\in (0, 1)$ and idiosyncratic innovations. Assuming that $α$ has a density function of the form $ψ(x) (1 - x)^β$, $x \in (0, 1)$, with $\lim_{x\uparrow 1} ψ(x) = ψ_1 \in (0, \infty)$, different Brownian limit processes of appropriately centered and scaled aggregated partial sums are shown to exist in case $β=1$ when taking first the limit as $N \to \infty$ and then the time scale $n \to \infty…
We analyze almost sure asymptotic behavior of extreme values of a regenerative process. We show that under certain conditions a properly centered and normalized running maximum of a regenerative process satisfies a law of the iterated logarithm for the $\limsup$ and a law of the triple logarithm for the $\liminf$. This complements a previously known result of Glasserman and Kou [Ann. Appl. Probab. 5(2) (1995), 424--445]. We apply our results to several queuing systems and a birth and death process.
We consider a Markov chain of point processes such that each state is a super position of an independent cluster process with the previous state as its centre process together with some independent noise process. The model extends earlier work by Felsenstein and Shimatani describing a reproducing population. We discuss when closed term expressions of the first and second order moments are available for a given state. In a special case it is known that the pair correlation function for these type of point processes converges as the Markov chain progresses, but it has not been shown whether the …
In this paper, we discuss the laws of the iterated logarithm (LIL) for occupation times of Markov processes $Y$ in general metric measure space both near zero and near infinity under some minimal assumptions. We first establish LILs of (truncated) occupation times on balls $B(x,r)$ of radii $r$ up to an function $Φ(r)$, which is an iterated logarithm of mean exit time of $Y$, by showing that the function $Φ$ is optimal. Our first result on LILs of occupation times covers both near zero and near infinity regardless of transience and recurrence of the process. Our assumptions are truly local in …
Let $Y$ be a symmetric Borel right process with locally compact state space $T\subseteq R^{1}$ and potential densities $u(x,y)$ with respect to some $σ$-finite measure on $T$. Let $g$ and $f$ be finite excessive functions for $ Y$. Set $$ u_{g, f}(x,y)= u(x,y)+g(x)f(y),\qquad x,y\in T.$$ In this paper we take $Y$ to be a symmetric Lévy process, or a diffusion, that is killed at the end of an independent exponential time or the first time it hits 0. Under general smoothness conditions on $g$, $f$, $u$ and points $d\in T$, laws of the iterated logarithm are found for $X_{k/2} =\{X_{k/2}(t), t\in…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the probability that a stochastic process $(Z_t)_{t \geq 0}$ does not exceed a constant barrier up to time $T$ (the so called survival probability) when Z is the composition of two independent processes $(X_t)_{t \in I}$ and $(Y_t)_{t \geq 0}$. To be precise, we consider $(Z_t)_{t \geq 0}$ defined by $Z_t = X \circ \abs{Y_t}$ when $I = [0,\infty)$ and $Z_t = X \circ Y_t$ when $I = \mathbb{R}$. For continuous self-similar processes $(Y_t)_{t \geq 0}$, the rate of decay of survival probability for $Z$ can be inferred directly from the survival probability of …
We establish integral tests and laws of the iterated logarithm for the lower envelope of positive self-similar Markov processes at 0 and $+\infty$. Our proofs are based on the Lamperti representation and time reversal arguments. These results extend laws of the iterated logarithm for Bessel processes due to Dvoretsky and Erdös, Motoo and Rivero.
We study the upper tail behaviors of the local times of the additive stable processes. Let $X_1(t),...,X_p(t)$ be independent, d-dimensional symmetric stable processes with stable index $0<α\le 2$ and consider the additive stable process $\bar{X}(t_1,...,t_p)=X_1(t_1)+... +X_p(t_p)$. Under the condition $d<αp$, we obtain a precise form of the large deviation principle for the local time \[η^x([0,t]^p)=\int_0^t...\int_0^tδ_x\bigl(X_1(s_1)+... +X_p(s_p)\bigr) ds_1... ds_p\] of the multiparameter process $\bar{X}(t_1,...,t_p)$, and for its supremum norm $\sup_{x\in\mathbb{R}^d}η^x([0,t]^p)$. Our …
The law of the iterated logarithm for partial sums of weakly dependent processes was intensively studied by Walter Philipp in the late 1960s and 1970s. In this paper, we aim to extend these results to nondegenerate U-statistics of data that are strongly mixing or functionals of an absolutely regular process.
We establish integral tests and laws of the iterated logarithm for the upper envelope of the future infimum of positive self-similar Markov processes and for increasing self-similar Markov processes at 0 and infinity. Our proofs are based on the Lamperti representation and time reversal arguments due to Chaumont and Pardo [9]. These results extend laws of the iterated logarithm for the future infimum of Bessel processes due to Khoshnevisan et al. [11].
We are interested in path-dependent semilinear PDEs, where the derivatives are of G{â}teaux type in specific directions k and b, being the kernel functions of a Volterra Gaussian process X. Under some conditions on k, b and the coefficients of the PDE, we prove existence and uniqueness of a decoupled mild solution, a notion introduced in a previous paper by the authors. We also show that the solution of the PDE can be represented through BSDEs where the forward (underlying) process is X.
There has been recent interest in the conditional central limit question for (strictly) stationary, ergodic processes $...,X_{-1},X_0,X_1,...$ whose partial sums $S_n=X_1+...+X_n$ are of the form $S_n=M_n+R_n$, where $M_n$ is a square integrable martingale with stationary increments and $R_n$ is a remainder term for which $E(R_n^2)=o(n)$. Here we explore the law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) for the same class of processes. Letting $\Vert\cdot\Vert$ denote the norm in $L^2(P)$, a sufficient condition for the partial sums of a stationary process to have the form $S_n=M_n+R_n$ is that $n^{-3/2…
We introduce a class of iterated processes called $α$-time Brownian motion for $0<α\leq 2$. These are obtained by taking Brownian motion and replacing the time parameter with a symmetric $α$-stable process. We prove a Chung-type law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) for these processes which is a generalization of LIL proved in \cite{hu} for iterated Brownian motion. When $α=1$ it takes the following form $$ \liminf_{T\to\infty}T^{-1/2}(\log \log T) \sup_{0\leq t\leq T}|Z_{t}|=π^{2}\sqrt{λ_{1}} a.s. $$ where $λ_{1}$ is the first eigenvalue for the Cauchy process in the interval $[-1,1].$ We also…
We discuss joint temporal and contemporaneous aggregation of $N$ independent copies of strictly stationary INteger-valued AutoRegressive processes of order 1 (INAR(1)) with random coefficient $α\in(0,1)$ and with idiosyncratic Poisson innovations. Assuming that $α$ has a density function of the form $ψ(x)(1 - x)^β$, $x\in(0,1)$, with $\lim_{x\uparrow 1}ψ(x) = ψ_1 \in(0,\infty)$, different limits of appropriately centered and scaled aggregated partial sums are shown to exist for $β\in(-1,0)$, $β= 0$, $β\in(0,1)$ or $β\in(1,\infty)$, when taking first the limit as $N\to\infty$ and then the time …
For a random walk defined for a doubly infinite sequence of times, we let the time parameter itself be an integer-valued process, and call the orginal process a random walk at random time. We find the scaling limit which generalizes the so-called iterated Brownian motion. Khoshnevisan and Lewis [Ann. Appl. Probab. 9 (1999) 629-667] suggested "the existence of a form of measure-theoretic duality" between iterated Brownian motion and a Brownian motion in random scenery. We show that a random walk at random time can be considered a random walk in "alternating" scenery, thus hinting at a mechanism…
We study the iterated Galton-Watson process (IGW), possibly with thinning, introduced by Gawełand Kimmel to model the number of repeats of DNA triplets during some genetic disorders. If the process involves some thinning, then extinction and explosion can have positive probability simultaneously. If the underlying (simple) Galton-Watson process is nondecreasing with mean m, then, conditionally on the explosion, the logarithm of the population of the IGW at time n+1 is equivalent to log(m) times the population at time n, almost surely. This simplifies arguments of Gawełand Kimmel, and confirms …
We consider a Markov chain obtained by random iterations of Lipschitz maps $T_i$ chosen with a probability $p_i(x)$ depending on the current position $x$. We assume this system has a property of "contraction on average", that is $\sum_i d(T_ix,T_iy)p_i(x) < ρd(x,y)$ for some $ρ<1$. In the present note, we study the weak convergence of the empirical process associated to this Markov chain.
We establish integral tests and laws of the iterated logarithm at 0 and at $+\infty$, for the upper envelope of positive self-similar Markov processes. Our arguments are based on the Lamperti representation, time reversal arguments and on the study of the upper envelope of their future infimum due to Pardo \cite{Pa}. These results extend integral test and laws of the iterated logarithm for Bessel processes due to Dvoretsky and Erdös \cite{de} and stable Lévy processes conditioned to stay positive with no positive jumps due to Bertoin \cite{be1}.
Self-normalized processes arise naturally in statistical applications. Being unit free, they are not affected by scale changes. Moreover, self-normalization often eliminates or weakens moment assumptions. In this paper we present several exponential and moment inequalities, particularly those related to laws of the iterated logarithm, for self-normalized random variables including martingales. Tail probability bounds are also derived. For random variables B_t>0 and A_t, let Y_t(λ)=\exp{λA_t-λ^2B_t^2/2}. We develop inequalities for the moments of A_t/B_{t} or sup_{t\geq 0}A_t/{B_t(\log \log B_{…
In his, by now, classical work from 1981, Nerman made extensive use of a crucial martingale $(W_t)_{t \geq 0}$ to prove convergence in probability, in mean and almost surely, of supercritical general branching processes (a.k.a. Crump-Mode-Jagers branching processes) counted with a general characteristic. The martingale terminal value $W$ figures in the limits of his results. We investigate the rate at which the martingale, now called Nerman's martingale, converges to its limit $W$. More precisely, assuming the existence of a Malthusian parameter $α> 0$ and $W_0\in L^2$, we prove a functional c…
We discuss a class of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations(BSDEs) with no driving martingale. When the randomness of the driver depends on a general Markov process $X$, those BSDEs are denominated Markovian BSDEs and can be associated to a deterministic problem, called Pseudo-PDE which constitute the natural generalization of a parabolicsemilinear PDE which naturally appears when the underlying filtration is Brownian. We consider two aspects of well-posedness forthe Pseudo-PDEs: "classical" and "martingale" solutions.
We prove Chung-type laws of the iterated logarithm for general Lévy processes at zero. In particular, we provide tools to translate small deviation estimates directly into laws of the iterated logarithm. This reveals laws of the iterated logarithm for Lévy processes at small times in many concrete examples. In some cases, exotic norming functions are derived.
In this paper we study general nonlinear stochastic differential equations, where the usual Brownian motion is replaced by a Lévy process. We also suppose that the coefficient multiplying the increments of this process is merely Lipschitz continuous and not necessarily linear in the time-marginals of the solution as is the case in the classical McKean-Vlasov model. We first study existence, uniqueness and particle approximations for these stochastic differential equations. When the driving process is a pure jump Lévy process with a smooth but unbounded Lévy measure, we develop a stochastic cal…
We study epidemic models where the infectivity of each individual is a random function of the infection age (the elapsed time of infection). To describe the epidemic evolution dynamics, we use a stochastic process that tracks the number of individuals at each time that have been infected for less than or equal to a certain amount of time, together with the aggregate infectivity process. We establish the functional law of large numbers (FLLN) for the stochastic processes that describe the epidemic dynamics. The limits are described by a set of deterministic integral equations, which has a furth…
We consider a standard one-dimensional Brownian motion on the time interval $[0,1]$ conditioned to have vanishing iterated time integrals up to order $N$. We show that the resulting processes can be expressed explicitly in terms of shifted Legendre polynomials and the original Brownian motion, and we use these representations to prove that the processes converge weakly as $N\to\infty$ to the zero process. This gives rise to a polynomial decomposition for Brownian motion. We further study the fluctuation processes obtained through scaling by $\sqrt{N}$ and show that they converge in finite dime…
We show some Chung-type $\liminf$ law of the iterated logarithm results at zero for a class of (pure-jump) Feller or Lévy-type processes. This class includes all Lévy processes. The norming function is given in terms of the symbol of the infinitesimal generator of the process. In the Lévy case, the symbol coincides with the characteristic exponent.
Iterated Brownian motion $Z_{t}$ serves as a physical model for diffusions in a crack. If $τ_{D}(Z) $ is the first exit time of this processes from a domain $D \subset \RR{R}^{n}$, started at $z\in D$, then $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z)>t]$ is the distribution of the lifetime of the process in $D$. In this paper we determine the large time asymptotics of $P_{z}[τ_{P_α}(Z) > t]$ which gives exponential integrability of $τ_{P_α}(Z) $ for parabola-shaped domains of the form $ P_α=\{(x,Y)\in \RR{R} \times \RR{R}^{n-1}: x>0, |Y|<Ax^α \}$, for $ 0<α<1$, $A>0.$ We also obtain similar results for twisted domains in…
We define a time dependent empirical process based on $n$ independent fractional Brownian motions and describe strong approximations to it by Gaussian processes. They lead to strong approximations and functional laws of the iterated logarithm for the quantile or inverse of this empirical process. They are obtained via time dependent Bahadur--Kiefer representations.
We study functionals of the form \[ζ_{t}=\int_0^{t}...\int_0^{t} | X_1(s_1)+...+ X_p(s_p)|^{-σ}ds_1... ds_p\] where $X_1(t),..., X_p(t)$ are i.i.d. $d$-dimensional symmetric stable processes of index $0<\bb\le 2$. We obtain results about the large deviations and laws of the iterated logarithm for $ζ_{t}$.
We introduce a class of interesting stochastic processes based on Brownian-time processes. These are obtained by taking Markov processes and replacing the time parameter with the modulus of Brownian motion. They generalize the iterated Brownian motion (IBM) of Burdzy and the Markov snake of Le Gall, and they introduce new interesting examples. After defining Brownian-time processes, we relate them to fourth order parabolic PDEs. We then study their exit problem as they exit nice domains in $\Rd$, and connect it to elliptic PDEs. We show that these processes have the peculiar property that they…
We prove the compact law of the iterated logarithm for stationary and ergodic differences of (reverse or not) martingales taking values in a separable $2$-smooth Banach space (for instance a Hilbert space). Then, in the martingale case, the almost sure invariance principle is derived from a result of Berger. From those results, we deduce the almost sure invariance principle for stationary processes under the Hannan condition and the compact law of the iterated logarithm for stationary processes arising from non-invertible dynamical systems. Those results for stationary processes are new, even …
We derive explicit distance bounds for Stratonovich iterated integrals along two Gaussian processes (also known as signatures of Gaussian rough paths) based on the regularity assumption of their covariance functions. Similar estimates have been obtained recently in [Friz-Riedel, AIHP, to appear]. One advantage of our argument is that we obtain the bound for the third level iterated integrals merely based on the first two levels, and this reflects the intrinsic nature of rough paths. Our estimates are sharp when both covariance functions have finite 1-variation, which includes a large class of …
Consider the following iterated process on a hypergraph $H$. Each vertex $v$ has an initial vertex weight. At each step, we uniformly at random select an edge $F$ in $H$, and for each vertex $v$ in $F$ we replace the weight of $v$ by the average value of the vertex weights over all vertices in $F$. This is a generalization of an interactive process on graphs, first proposed by Aldous and Lanoue. In this paper, we use the eigenvalues of a Laplacian for hypergraphs to bound the rate of convergence for the iterated averaging process.
We delve deeper into our study of the connection of Brownian-time processes (BTPs) to fourth order parabolic PDEs, which we introduced in a recent joint article with W. Zheng. Probabilistically, BTPs and their cousins BTPs with excursions form a unifying class of interesting stochastic processes that includes the celebrated IBM of Burdzy and other new intriguing processes, and is also connected to the Markov snake of Le Gall. BTPs also offer a new connection of probability to PDEs that is fundamentally different from the Markovian one. They solve fourth order PDEs in which the initial function…
