We study Brownian motion in a drifted Brownian potential in the subexponential regime. We prove that the annealed probability of deviating below the almost sure speed has a polynomial rate of decay and compute the exponent in this power law. This provides a continuous-time analogue of what Dembo, Peres and Zeitouni proved for the transient random walk in random environment. Our method takes a completely different route, making use of Lamperti's representation together with an iteration scheme.
We study a one-dimensional diffusion process in a drifted Brownian potential. We characterize the upper functions of its hitting times in the sense of Paul Lévy, and determine the lower limits in terms of an iterated logarithm law.
By using the law of the excursions of Brownian motion with drift, we find the distribution of the $n-$th passage time of Brownian motion through a straight line $S(t)= a + bt.$ In the special case when $b = 0,$ we extend the result to a space-time transformation of Brownian motion.
Fractional equations governing the distribution of reflecting drifted Brownian motions are presented. The equations are expressed in terms of tempered Riemann--Liouville type derivatives. For these operators a Marchaud-type form is obtained and a Riesz tempered fractional derivative is examined, together with its Fourier transform.
We consider a one-dimensional diffusion process $X$ in a $(-κ/2)$-drifted Brownian potential for $κ\neq 0$. We are interested in the maximum of its local time, and study its almost sure asymptotic behaviour, which is proved to be different from the behaviour of the maximum local time of the transient random walk in random environment. We also obtain the convergence in law of the maximum local time of $X$ under the annealed law after suitable renormalization when $κ\geq 1$. Moreover, we characterize all the upper and lower classes for the hitting times of $X$, in the sense of Paul Lévy, and pro…
For drifted Brownian motion $X(t)= x - μt + B_t \ (μ>0)$ starting from $x>0,$ we study the joint distribution of the first-passage time below zero, $τ(x),$ and the first-passage area, $A(x),$ swept out by $X$ till the time $τ(x).$ In particular, we establish differential equations with boundary conditions for the joint moments $E[τ(x)^m A(x)^n],$ and we present an algorithm to find recursively them, for any $m$ and $n.$ Finally, the expected value of the time average of $X$ till the time $τ(x)$ is obtained.
Consider a negatively drifted one dimensional Brownian motion starting at positive initial position, its first hitting time to 0 has the inverse Gaussian law. Moreover, conditionally on this hitting time, the Brownian motion up to that time has the law of a 3- dimensional Bessel bridge. In this paper, we give a generalization of this result to a family of Brownian motions with interacting drifts, indexed by the vertices of a conductance network. The hitting times are equal in law to the inverse of a random potential that appears in the analysis of a self-interacting process called the Vertex R…
We study an inverse first-passage-time problem for Wiener process $X(t)$ subject to hold and jump from a boundary $c.$ Let be given a threshold $S>X(0) \ge c,$ and a distribution function $F$ on $[0, + \infty ).$ The problem consists in finding the distribution of the holding time at $c$ and the distribution of jumps from $c,$ so that the first-passage time of $X(t)$ through $S$ has distribution $F.$
We study the 'Up the River' problem formulated by Aldous (2002), where a unit drift is distributed among a finite collection of Brownian particles on $ \mathbb{R}_+ $, which are annihilated once they reach the origin. Starting $ K $ particles at $ x=1 $, we prove a conjecture of Aldous (2002) that the 'push-the-laggard' strategy of distributing the drift asymptotically (as $ K\to\infty $) maximizes the total number of surviving particles, with approximately $ \frac{4}{\sqrtπ} K^{1/2} $ surviving particles. We further establish the hydrodynamic limit of the particle density, in terms of a two-p…
We study a model of diffusion in a brownian potential. This model was firstly introduced by T. Brox (1986) as a continuous time analogue of random walk in random environment. We estimate the deviations of this process above or under its typical behavior. Our results rely on different tools such as a representation introduced by Y. Hu, Z. Shi and M. Yor, Kotani's lemma, introduced at first by K. Kawazu and H. Tanaka (1997), and a decomposition of hitting times developed in a recent article by A. Fribergh, N. Gantert and S. Popov (2008). Our results are in agreement with their results in the dis…
We provide a deep connection between elastic drifted Brownian motions and inverses to tempered subordinators. Based on this connection, we establish a link between multiplicative functionals and dynamical boundary conditions given in terms of non-local equations in time. Indeed, we show that the multiplicative functional associated to the elastic Brownian motion with drift is equivalent to a multiplicative functional associated with fractional boundary conditions of tempered type. By exploiting such connection we write some functionals in terms of a simple (positive and non-decreasing) process…
We show that the slopes between h-extrema of the drifted 1D Brownian motion form a stationary alternating marked point process, extending the result of J. Neveu and J. Pitman for the non drifted case. Our analysis covers the results on the statistics of h-extrema obtained by P. Le Doussal, C. Monthus and D. Fisher via a Renormalization Group analysis and gives a complete description of the slope between h-extrema covering the origin by means of the Palm--Khinchin theory. Moreover, we analyze the behavior of the Brownian motion near its h-extrema.
An exact expression for the distribution of the area swept out by a drifted Brownian motion till its first-passage time is derived. A study of the asymptotic behaviour confirms earlier conjectures and clarifies their range of validity. The analysis also leads to a simple closed-form solution for the moments of the Airy distribution.
In this paper we study the drifted Brownian meander, that is a Brownian motion starting from $ u $ and subject to the condition that $ \min_{ 0\leq z \leq t} B(z)> v $ with $ u > v $. The limiting process for $ u \downarrow v $ is analyzed and the sufficient conditions for its construction are given. We also study the distribution of the maximum of the meander with drift and the related first-passage times. The representation of the meander endowed with a drift is provided and extends the well-known result of the driftless case. The last part concerns the drifted excursion process the distribu…
A Quasi-Stationary Distribution (QSD)for a Markov process with an almost surely hit absorbing state is a time-invariant initial distribution for the process conditioned on not being absorbed by any given time. An initial distribution for the process is in the domain of attraction of some QSD $ν$ if the distribution of the process a time $t$, conditioned not to be absorbed by time $t$ converges to $ν$. In this work study mostly Brownian motion with constant drift on the half line $[0,\infty)$ absorbed at $0$. Previous work by Martinez et al. identifies all QSDs and provides a nearly complete ch…
We consider a diffusion process $X$ in a random potential $\V$ of the form $\V_x = §_x -δx$ where $δ$ is a positive drift and $§$ is a strictly stable process of index $α\in (1,2)$ with positive jumps. Then the diffusion is transient and $X_t / \log^αt$ converges in law towards an exponential distribution. This behaviour contrasts with the case where $\V$ is a drifted Brownian motion and provides an example of a transient diffusion in a random potential which is as "slow" as in the recurrent setting.
In this paper we study the sojourn time on the positive half-line up to time $ t $ of a drifted Brownian motion with starting point $ u $ and subject to the condition that $ \min_{ 0\leq z \leq l} B(z)> v $, with $ u > v $. This process is a drifted Brownian meander up to time $ l $ and then evolves as a free Brownian motion. We also consider the sojourn time of a bridge-type process, where we add the additional condition to return to the initial level at the end of the time interval. We analyze the weak limit of the occupation functional as $ u \downarrow v $. We obtain explicit distributiona…
Consider a d-dimensional Brownian motion in a random potential defined by attaching a nonnegative and polynomially decaying potential around Poisson points. We introduce a repulsive interaction between the Brownian path and the Poisson points by weighting the measure by the Feynman-Kac functional. We show that under the weighted measure, the Brownian motion tends to localize around the origin. We also determine the scaling limit of the path and also the limit shape of the random potential.
The perturbed GUE corners ensemble is the joint distribution of eigenvalues of all principal submatrices of a matrix $G+\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{a})$, where $G$ is the random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), and $\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{a})$ is a fixed diagonal matrix. We introduce Markov transitions based on exponential jumps of eigenvalues, and show that their successive application is equivalent in distribution to a deterministic shift of the matrix. This result also leads to a new distributional symmetry for a family of reflected Brownian motions with drifts coming from an arith…
We derive a new theoretical lower bound for the expected supremum of drifted fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$ over (in)finite time horizon. Extensive simulation experiments indicate that our lower bound outperforms the Monte Carlo estimates based on very dense grids for $H\in(0,\tfrac{1}{2})$. Additionally, we derive the Paley-Wiener-Zygmund representation of a Linear Fractional Brownian motion and give an explicit expression for the derivative of the expected supremum at $H=\tfrac{1}{2}$ in the sense of recent work by Bisewski, Dębicki & Rolski (2021).
We consider a family of sup-functionals of (drifted) fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$. This family includes, but is not limited to: expected value of the supremum, expected workload, Wills functional, and Piterbarg-Pickands constant. Explicit formulas for the derivatives of these functionals as functions of Hurst parameter evaluated at $H=\tfrac{1}{2}$ are established. In order to derive these formulas, we develop the concept of derivatives of fractional $α$-stable fields introduced by Stoev \& Taqqu (2004) and propose Paley-Wiener-Zygmund representation of fractiona…
A quenched central limit theorem is derived for the super-Brownian motion with super-Brownian immigration, in dimension $d\geq 4$. At the critical dimension $d=4$, the quenched and annealed fluctuations are of the same order but are not equal.
We prove an invariance principle for Brownian motion in Gaussian or Poissonian random scenery by the method of characteristic functions. Annealed asymptotic limits are derived in all dimensions, with a focus on the case of dimension $d=2$, which is the main new contribution of the paper.
Motivated by the study of the directed polymer model with mobile Poissonian traps or catalysts and the stochastic parabolic Anderson model with time dependent potential, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of \[\mathbb{E}\otimes\mathbb{E}_0\exp\left\{\pmθ\int^t_0\bar{V}(s,B_s)ds\right\}\qquad (t\to\infty)\] where $þ>0$ is a constant, $\overline{V}$ is the renormalized Poisson potential of the form \[\overline{V}(s,x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}\frac{1}{|y-x|^p}\left(ω_s(dy)-dy\right),\] and $ω_s$ is the measure-valued process consisting of independent Brownian particles whose initial positions form…
We prove large deviations principles in large time, for the Brownian occupation time in random scenery. The random scenery is constant on unit cubes, and consist of i.i.d. bounded variables, independent of the Brownian motion. This model is a time-continuous version of Kesten and Spitzer's random walk in random scenery. We prove large deviations principles in ``quenched'' and ``annealed'' settings.
In this paper we consider the iterated Brownian motion $ ^{μ_1}_{μ_2}\!I(t) = B_1^{μ_1} ( | B_{2}^{μ_2} (t)|) $ where $B_j^{μ_j} , j=1,2$ are two independent Brownian motions with drift $μ_j$. Here we study the last zero crossing of $ ^{μ_1}_{μ_2}\!I(t) $ and for this purpose we derive the last zero-crossing distribution of the drifted Brownian motion. We derive also the joint distribution of the last zero crossing before $ t $ and of the first passage time through the zero level of a Brownian motion with drift $ μ$ after $ t $. All these results permit us to derive explicit formulas for ${^I_…
In this paper we study the maximal position process of branching Brownian motion in random spatial environment. The random environment is given by a process $ξ= \left(ξ(x)\right)_{x\in\mathbb{R}}$ satisfying certain conditions. We show that the maximum position $M_t$ of particles alive at time $t$ satisfies a quenched strong law of large numbers and an annealed invariance principle.
We study a random walk pinning model, where conditioned on a simple random walk Y on Z^d acting as a random medium, the path measure of a second independent simple random walk X up to time t is Gibbs transformed with Hamiltonian -L_t(X,Y), where L_t(X,Y) is the collision local time between X and Y up to time t. This model arises naturally in various contexts, including the study of the parabolic Anderson model with moving catalysts, the parabolic Anderson model with Brownian noise, and the directed polymer model. It falls in the same framework as the pinning and copolymer models, and exhibits …
We study a spatial branching model, where the underlying motion is Brownian motion and the branching is affected by a random collection of reproduction blocking sets called "mild" obstacles. We show that the quenched local growth rate is given by the branching rate in the `free' region . When the underlying motion is an arbitrary diffusion process, we obtain a dichotomy for the local growth that is independent of the Poissonian intensity. Finally, and most importantly, we obtain the asymptotics (in probability) of the quenched (when $d\le 2$) and the annealed (arbitrary d) global growth rates,…
In this article it is shown that the Brownian motion on the continuum random tree is the scaling limit of the simple random walks on any family of discrete $n$-vertex ordered graph trees whose search-depth functions converge to the Brownian excursion as $n\to\infty$. We prove both a quenched version (for typical realisations of the trees) and an annealed version (averaged over all realisations of the trees) of our main result. The assumptions of the article cover the important example of simple random walks on the trees generated by the Galton-Watson branching process, conditioned on the total…
In this note, we give a new proof of Liggett's theorem on the invariant measures of independent particle systems from [Lig78] in the particular case of independent drifted Brownian motions. This particular case has received a lot of attention recently due to its applications for the analysis of the local extrema of discrete Gaussian free field. The novelty of our proof is that it identifies directly the expected Poisson Point Process with exponential intensity without relying on the Choquet-Deny convolution equation $μ* P=μ$ ([ChoquetDeny60,Deny60]).
We present precise moderate deviation probabilities, in both quenched and annealed settings, for a recurrent diffusion process with a Brownian potential. Our method relies on fine tools in stochastic calculus, including Kotani's lemma and Lamperti's representation for exponential functionals. In particular, our result for quenched moderate deviations is in agreement with a recent theorem of Comets and Popov [Probab. Theory Related Fields 126 (2003) 571-609] who studied the corresponding problem for Sinai's random walk in random environment.
We are concerned with homogenization of stochastic differential equations (SDE) with stationary coefficients driven by Poisson random measures and Brownian motions in the critical case, that is when the limiting equation admits both a Brownian part as well as a pure jump part. We state an annealed convergence theorem. This problem is deeply connected with homogenization of integral partial differential equations
We study a branching Brownian motion $Z$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, among obstacles scattered according to a Poisson random measure with a radially decaying intensity. Obstacles are balls with constant radius and each one works as a trap for the whole motion when hit by a particle. Considering a general offspring distribution, we derive the decay rate of the annealed probability that none of the particles of $Z$ hits a trap, asymptotically in time $t$. This proves to be a rich problem motivating the proof of a more general result about the speed of branching Brownian motion conditioned on non-extincti…
We investigate Lyapunov exponents of Brownian motion in a nonnegative Poissonian potential $V$. The Lyapunov exponent depends on the potential $V$ and our interest lies in the decay rate of the Lyapunov exponent if the potential $V$ tends to zero. In our model the random potential $V$ is generated by locating at each point of a Poisson point process with intensity $ν$ a bounded compactly supported nonnegative function $W$. We show that for sequences of potentials $V_n$ for which $ν_n \|W_n\|_1 \sim D/n$ for some constant $D > 0$ ($n \to \infty$), the decay rates to zero of the quenched and ann…
Simulated tempering is a popular method of allowing MCMC algorithms to move between modes of a multimodal target density π. The paper [24] introduced the Annealed Leap-Point Sampler (ALPS) to allow for rapid movement between modes. In this paper, we prove that, under appropriate assumptions, a suitably scaled version of the ALPS algorithm converges weakly to skew Brownian motion. Our results show that under appropriate assumptions, the ALPS algorithm mixes in time O(d[log(d)]^2 ) or O(d), depending on which version is used.

We are interested in the analysis of Gibbs measures defined on two independent Brownian paths in $\mathbb R^d$ interacting through a mutual self-attraction. This is expressed by the Hamiltonian $\int\int_{\mathbb R^{2d}} V(x-y) μ(d x)ν(d y)$ with two probability measures $μ$ and $ν$ representing the occupation measures of two independent Brownian motions. We will be interested in class of potentials $V$ which are {\it{singular}}, e.g., Dirac or Coulomb type interactions in $\mathbb R^3$, or the correlation function of the parabolic Anderson problem with white noise potential. The mutual intera…
We consider an $N$-particle system of noncolliding Brownian motion starting from $x_1 \leq x_2 \leq ... \leq x_N$ with drift coefficients $ν_j, 1 \leq j \leq N$ satisfying $ν_1 \leq ν_2 \leq ... \leq ν_N$. When all of the initial points are degenerated to be zero, $x_j=0, 1 \leq j \leq N$, the equivalence is proved between a dilatation with factor $1/t$ of this drifted process and the noncolliding Brownian motion starting from $ν_1 \leq ν_2 \leq ... \leq ν_N$ without drift observed at reciprocal time $1/t$, for arbitrary $t > 0$. Using this reciprocal time relation, we study the determinantal …
This paper concerns a variational representation formula for Wiener functionals. Let $B=\{ B_{t}\} _{t\ge 0}$ be a standard $d$-dimensional Brownian motion. Boué and Dupuis (1998) showed that, for any bounded measurable functional $F(B)$ of $B$ up to time $1$, the expectation $\mathbb{E}\!\left[ e^{F(B)}\right] $ admits a variational representation in terms of drifted Brownian motions. In this paper, with a slight modification of insightful reasoning by Lehec (2013) allowing also $F(B)$ to be a functional of $B$ over the whole time interval, we prove that the Boué--Dupuis formula holds true pr…
We consider the annealed asymptotics for the survival probability of Brownian motion among randomly distributed traps. The configuration of the traps is given by independent displacements of the lattice points. We determine the long time asymptotics of the logarithm of the survival probability up to a multiplicative constant. As applications, we show the Lifshitz tail effect of the density of states of the associated random Schrödinger operator and derive a quantitative estimate for the strength of intermittency in the Parabolic Anderson problem.
We consider a transient diffusion in a $(-κ/2)$-drifted Brownian potential $W\_κ$ with $0\textless{}κ\textless{}1$. We prove its localization at time $t$ in the neighborhood of some random points depending only on the environment, which are the positive $h\_t$-minima of the environment, for $h\_t$ a bit smaller than $\log t$. We also prove an Aging phenomenon for the diffusion, a renewal theorem for the hitting time of the farthest visited valley, and provide a central limit theorem for the number of valleys visited up to time $t$. The proof relies on a decomposition of the trajectory of $W\_κ…
We consider a model of a polymer in $\mathbb{Z}^{d+1}$, constrained to join 0 and a hyperplane at distance $N$. The polymer is subject to a quenched nonnegative random environment. Alternatively, the model describes crossing random walks in a random potential (see Zerner [Ann Appl. Probab. 8 (1998) 246--280] or Chapter 5 of Sznitman [Brownian Motion, Obstacles and Random Media (1998) Springer] for the original Brownian motion formulation). It was recently shown [Ann. Probab. 36 (2008) 1528--1583; Probab. Theory Related Fields 143 (2009) 615--642] that, in such a setting, the quenched and annea…
