We study linear actions of algebraic groups on smooth projective varieties X. A guiding goal for us is to understand the cohomology of "quotients" under such actions, by generalizing (from reductive to non-reductive group actions) existing methods involving Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). We concentrate on actions of unipotent groups H, and define sets of stable points X^s and semistable points X^{ss}, often explicitly computable via the methods of reductive GIT, which reduce to the standard definitions due to Mumford in the case of reductive actions. We compare these with definitions in the literature. Results include (1) a geometric criterion determining whether or not a ring of invariants is finitely generated, (2) the existence of a geometric quotient of X^s, and (3) the existence of a canonical "enveloping quotient" variety of X^{ss}, denoted X//H, which (4) has a projective completion given by a reductive GIT quotient and (5) is itself projective and isomorphic to Proj(k[X]^H) when k[X]^H is finitely generated.
We prove finite generation of the algebras of invariants for a class of linear actions of suitable non-reductive groups on projective and affine varieties, and give a geometric construction for their GIT quotients.
The wall-and-chamber structure of the dependence of the reductive GIT quotient on the choice of linearisation is well known. In this article, we first give a brief survey of recent results in non-reductive GIT, which apply when the unipotent radical is 'graded'. We then examine the dependence of these non-reductive quotients on the linearisation and an additional parameter, the choice of one-parameter subgroup grading the unipotent radical, and arrive at a picture similar to the reductive one.
We combine recently developed intersection theory for non-reductive geometric invariant theoretic quotients with equivariant localisation to prove a formula for Thom polynomials of Morin singularities. These formulas use only toric combinatorics of certain partition polyhedra, and our new approach circumvents the poorly understood Borel geometry of existing models.
We extend the methods of geometric invariant theory to actions of non--reductive groups in the case of homomorphisms between decomposable sheaves whose automorphism groups are non--reductive. Given a linearization of the natural action of the group $\Aut(E)\times\Aut(F)$ on Hom(E,F), a homomorphism is called stable if its orbit with respect to the unipotent radical is contained in the stable locus with respect to the natural reductive subgroup of the automorphism group. We encounter effective numerical conditions for a linearization such that the corresponding open set of semi-stable homomorph…
We present a generalized version of classical geometric invariant theory à la Mumford where we consider an affine algebraic group $G$ acting on a specific affine algebraic variety $X$. We define the notions of linearly reductive and of unipotent action in terms of the $G$ fixed point functor in the category of $(G,\Bbbk [X])$--modules. In the case that $X=\{\star\}$ we recuperate the concept of lineraly reductive and of unipotent group. We prove in our "relative" context some of the classical results of GIT such as: existence of quotients, finite generation of invariants, Kostant--Rosenlicht's…
The category of perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of a complex reductive group $G$ gives a canonical geometric construction of the split form of the Langlands dual group $\check G_\bZ$ over the integers. Given a field $k$, we give a Tannakian construction of the quasi-split forms of $\check G_k$, as well as a construction of the gerbe associated to an inner form of $\check G_k$.
In this paper we prove two formulas for the characters of representations of reductive groups. Both express the character of a representation in terms of the same geometric data attached to it. When specialized to the case of a compact Lie group, one of them reduces to Kirillov's character formula in the compact case, and the other, to an application of the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula to the Borel-Weil realization of the representation.
In this paper we are interested in the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level for dual reductive pairs $(G,H)$ of type II over a non-Archimedean field of characteristic $p\neq 2$ in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. We consider the geometric version of the $I_{H}\times I_{G}$-invariants of the Weil representation $\mathcal{S}^{I_{H}\times I_{G}}$ as a bimodule under the of action Iwahori-Hecke algebras $\mathcal{H}_{I_{G}}$ and $\mathcal{H}_{I_{H}}$ and we give some partial geometric description of the corresponding category under the action of Hecke functors…
We give another proof that a reductive algebraic group is geometrically reductive. We show that a quotient of the semi-stable locus (by a linear action of a reductive algebraic group on a projective scheme) exists, and from this Haboush's Theorem (Mumford's Conjecture) follows.
In this paper we study actions of reductive groups on affine spaces. We prove that there is a fan structure on the space of characters of the group, which parameterizes the possible invariant quotients. In the second half of the paper we study various geometrical properties of the quotients: we compute their Chow ring and the cohomology ring (in case we work over the complex numbers), both with rational coefficients. Actually, the cycle map turns out to be an isomorphism. Further, we construct families of such quotients over reduced base schemes, and compute again the Chow and the cohomology r…
Many moduli spaces are constructed as quotients of group actions; this paper surveys the classical theory, as well as recent progress and applications. We review geometric invariant theory for reductive groups and how it is used to construct moduli spaces, and explain two new developments extending this theory to non-reductive groups and to stacks, which enable the construction of new moduli spaces.
We prove that cuspidal automorphic D-modules have non-vanishing Whittaker coefficients, generalizing known results in the geometric Langlands program from GL_n to general reductive groups. The key tool is a microlocal interpretation of Whittaker coefficients. We establish various exactness properties in the geometric Langlands context that may be of independent interest. Specifically, we show Hecke functors are t-exact on the category of tempered D-modules, strengthening a classical result of Gaitsgory (with different hypotheses) for GL_n. We also show that Whittaker coefficient functors are t…
We discuss recent developments in the Langlands program for function fields, and in the geometric Langlands program. In particular we explain a canonical decomposition of the space of cuspidal automorphic forms for any reductive group G over a function field, indexed by global Langlands parameters. The proof uses the cohomology of G-shtukas with multiple modifications and the geometric Satake equivalence.
In this article we review the question of constructing geometric quotients of actions of linear algebraic groups on irreducible varieties over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero, in the spirit of Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT). The article surveys some recent work on geometric invariant theory and quotients of varieties by linear algebraic group actions, as well as background material on linear algebraic groups, Mumford's GIT and some of the challenges that the non-reductive setting presents. The earlier work of two of the authors in the setting of unipotent group a…

By the geometric Satake isomorphism of Mirkovic and Vilonen, decomposition numbers for reductive groups can be interpreted as decomposition numbers for equivariant perverse sheaves on the complex affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group. Using a description of the minimal degenerations of the affine Grassmannian obtained by Malkin, Ostrik and Vybornov, we are able to recover geometrically some decomposition numbers for reductive groups. In the other direction, we can use some decomposition numbers for reductive groups to prove geometric results, such as a new proof of non-smoothness res…
We classify central extensions of a reductive group $G$ by $\mathcal{K}_3$ and $B\mathcal{K}_3$, the sheaf of third Quillen $K$-theory groups and its classifying stack. These turn out to be parametrized by the group of Weyl-invariant quadratic forms on the cocharacter lattice valued in $k^\times$ and the group of integral Weyl-invariant cubic forms on the cocharacter lattice respectively.
Let $g_e$ be the centraliser of a nilpotent element $e$ in a finite dimensional simple Lie algebra $g$ of rank $l$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We investigate the algebra $S(g_e)^{g_e}$ of symmetric invariants of $g_e$ and prove that if $g$ is of type $A$ or $C$, then $S(g_e)^{g_e}$ is always a graded polynomial algebra in $l$ variables. We show that this continues to hold for some nilpotent elements in the Lie algebras of other types. In type $A$ we prove that $S(g_e)^{g_e}$ is freely generated by a regular sequence in $S(g_e)$ and describe the tangent cone at $e$ t…
The goal of this paper is to extend the standard invariant-theoretic design, well-developed in the reductive case, to the setting of representation of certain non-reductive groups. This concerns the following notions and results: the existence of generic stabilisers and generic isotropy groups for finite-dimensional representations; structure of the fields and algebras of invariants; quotient morphisms and structure of their fibres. One of the main tools for obtaining non-reductive Lie algebras is the semi-direct product construction. We observe that there are surprisingly many non-reductive L…
We generalize the notion of Ekedahl-Oort strata to elements in the loop group of any connected reductive group, and call the resulting discrete invariant the truncation of level 1 of the element. We give conditions for the Newton points occurring among the elements of a given truncation of level 1 and especially for the generic Newton point in a given truncation stratum. We prove that truncation strata are locally closed and give a description of the closure of each stratum. We also translate our results back to the original Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the reduction modulo p of Shimura vari…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive subgroup of a complex connected reductive group $\hat{G}$. Fix maximal tori and Borel subgroups of $G$ and $\hat{G}$. Consider the cone $LR^\circ(\hat{G},G)$ generated by the pairs $(ν,\hatν)$ of strictly dominant characters such that $V_ν$ is a submodule of $V_{\hatν}$. The main result of this article is a bijective parametrisation of the faces of $LR^\circ(\hat G,G)$. We also explain when such a face is contained in another one. In way, we obtain results about the faces of the Dolgachev-Hu's $G$-ample cone. We also apply our results to reprove known results a…
In this article we study, in the context of complex representations of symmetric groups, some aspects of the Heisenberg product, introduced by Marcelo Aguiar, Walter Ferrer Santos, and Walter Moreira in 2017. When applied to irreducible representations, this product gives rise to the Aguiar coefficients. We prove that these coefficients are in fact also branching coefficients for representations of connected complex reductive groups. This allows to use geometric methods already developped in a previous article, notably based on notions from Geometric Invariant Theory, and to obtain some stabil…
Let $G$ and $\tilde G$ be connected complex reductive Lie groups, $G$ semisimple. Let $Λ^+$ be the monoid of dominant weights for a positive root system $Δ^+$, and let $l(w)$ be the length of a Weyl group element $w$. Let $V_λ$ denote an irreducible $G$-module of highest weight $λ\inΛ^+$. For any closed embedding $ι:\tilde G\subset G$, we consider Property (A): $\quad\forallλ\inΛ^+,\exists q\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $V_{qλ}^{\tilde G}\ne0$. A necessary condition for (A) is for $G$ to have no simple factors to which $G$ projects surjectively. We show that this condition is sufficient if $\tilde …
In this paper we determine the scheme-theoretic fixed points of pinned reductive group schemes acted upon by a group of pinning-preserving automorphisms. The results are used in a companion paper to establish a ramified geometric Satake equivalence with integral or modular coefficients.
Let G be a reductive algebraic group and H a closed subgroup of G. Explicit constructions of G-invariant ideals in the algebra K[G/H] are given. This allows to obtain an elementary proof of Matsushima's criterion: a homogeneous space G/H is an affine variety if and only if H is reductive.
Let G be a connected reductive complex algebraic group acting on a smooth complete complex algebraic variety X. We assume that X under the action of G is a regular embedding, a condition satisfied in particular by smooth toric varieties and flag varieties. For any set D of G-stable prime divisors, we study the action on X of the connected automorphism group of X stabilizing D. We determine a Levi subgroup A of this automorphism group, and we compute relevant invariants of X as a spherical A-variety. As a byproduct, we obtain a description of the open A-orbit on X and the inclusion relation bet…
This is a survey article on moduli of affine schemes equipped with an action of a reductive group. The emphasis is on examples and applications to the classification of spherical varieties.
We consider actions of reductive groups on a varieties with finitely generated Cox ring, e.g., the classical case of a diagonal action on a product of projective spaces. Given such an action, we construct via combinatorial data in the Cox ring all maximal open subsets such that the quotient is quasiprojective or embeddable into a toric variety. As applications, we obtain an explicit description of the chamber structure of the linearized ample cone and several Gelfand-MacPherson type correspondences relating quotients of reductive groups to quotients of torus actions. Moreover, our approach pro…
We consider the conjugation-action of an arbitrary upper-block parabolic subgroup of ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbf{C})$, especially of the Borel subgroup $B$ and of the standard unipotent subgroup $U$ of the latter on the nilpotent cone of complex nilpotent matrices. We obtain generic normal forms of the orbits and describe generating (semi-) invariants for the Borel semi-invariant ring as well as for the $U$-invariant ring. The latter is described in more detail in terms of algebraic quotients by a special toric variety closely related. The study of a GIT-quotient for the Borel-action is initiated.
Let $\widehat{G}$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field with a pinning-preserving outer automorphism $σ$. Jantzen's twining character formula relates the trace of the action of $σ$ on a highest-weight representation $V_μ$ of $\widehat{G}$ to the character of a corresponding highest-weight representation $(V_σ)_μ$ of a related group $\widehat{G^{σ, \circ}}$. This paper extends the methods of Hong's geometric proof for the case $\widehat{G}$ is adjoint, to prove that the formula holds for all connected reductive groups, and examines the role of additional hypotheses. …
Suppose that G is a linearly reductive group. We study the minimal free resolution of the invariant ring. If G is a finite linearly reductive group, then the ring of invariants is generated in degree at most |G|, the group order. We prove that the ideal of relations of a minimal set of generators of the invariant ring is generated in degree at most 2|G|.
The article investigates the following question: given a projective variety X acted on by a connected and reductive group G, which is the relationship between the Gromov-Witten invariants of X and those of X//G? In this study we shall also try to give an algebraic approach to the so called Hamiltonian Gromov-Witten invariants which have appeared rather recenly in the literature.
Deligne constructed a remarkable local system on $\bP^1-\{0,\infty\}$ attached to a family of Kloosterman sums. Katz calculated its monodromy and asked whether there are Kloosterman sheaves for general reductive groups and which automorphic forms should be attached to these local systems under the Langlands correspondence. Motivated by work of Gross and Frenkel-Gross we find an explicit family of such automorphic forms and even a simple family of automorphic sheaves in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. We use these automorphic sheaves to construct l-adic Kloosterman sheaves for…
Let $G$ be a complex reductive algebraic group, $g$ its Lie algebra and $h$ a reductive subalgebra of $g$, $n$ a positive integer. Consider the diagonal actions $G:g^n, N_G(h):h^n$. We study a relation between the algebra $C[h^n]^{N_G(h)}$ and its subalgebra consisting of restrictions to $h^n$ of elements of $C[g^n]^G$.
For a connected reductive group G and a finite-dimensional G-module V, we study the invariant Hilbert scheme that parameterizes closed G-stable subschemes of V affording a fixed, multiplicity-finite representation of G in their coordinate ring. We construct an action on this invariant Hilbert scheme of a maximal torus T of G, together with an open T-stable subscheme admitting a good quotient. The fibers of the quotient map classify affine G-schemes having a prescribed categorical quotient by a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. We show that V contains only finitely many multiplicity-free G-subva…
In geometric representation theory, one often wishes to describe representations realized on spaces of invariant functions as trace functions of equivariant perverse sheaves. In the case of principal series representations of a connected split reductive group G over a local field, there is a description of families of these representations realized on spaces of functions on G invariant under the translation action of the Iwahori subgroup, or a suitable smaller compact open subgroup, studied by Howe, Bushnell and Kutzko, Roche, and others. In this paper, we construct categories of perverse shea…
We define and study the Drinfeld-Lafforgue-Vinberg compactification of the moduli stack of G-bundles Bun_G for an arbitrary reductive group G; its definition is given in terms of the Vinberg semigroup of G, and is due to Drinfeld (unpublished). Throughout the article we prefer to view the compactification as a canonical multi-parameter degeneration of Bun_G which we call the Drinfeld-Lafforgue-Vinberg degeneration VinBun_G. We construct local models for the degeneration VinBun_G which "factorize in families" and use them to study its singularities, generalizing results of the article [Sch1] wh…
We investigate Levi subgroups of a connected reductive algebraic group G, over a ground field K. We parametrize their conjugacy classes in terms of sets of simple roots and we prove that two Levi K-subgroups of G are rationally conjugate if and only if they are geometrically conjugate. These results are generalized to arbitrary connected linear algebraic K-groups. In that setting the appropriate analogue of a Levi subgroup is derived from the notion of a pseudo-parabolic subgroup.
Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group, H a reductive subgroup of G and X an affine G-variety. Let Y denote the set of fixed points of H in X, and N(H) the normalizer of H in G. In this paper we study the natural map from the quotient of Y by N(H) to the quotient of X by G induced by the inclusion of Y in X. We show that, given G and H, this map is a finite morphism for all G-varieties X if and only if H is G-completely reducible (in the sense defined by J-P. Serre); this was proved in characteristic zero by Luna in the 1970s. We discuss some applications and give a criterion for the map …
We study the semi-decomposable invariants of a split semisimple group and their extension to a split reductive group by using the torsion in the codimension $2$ Chow groups of a product of Severi-Brauer varieties. In particular, for any $n\geq 2$ we completely determine the degree $3$ invariants of a split semisimple group, the quotient of $(\operatorname{\mathbf{SL}}_{2})^{n}$ by its maximal central subgroup, as well as of the corresponding split reductive group. We also provide an example illustrating that a modification of our method can be applied to find the semi-decomposable invariants o…
In this paper we give smoothness criterions for a good quotient Y of a smooth variety X by a reductive group G. Our results partially answer a question raised by J. Fogarty in the case where G is a finite group. They also give a converse to a theorem of M. Brion, telling that invariant horizontal differential forms on X and differential forms on Y are isomorphic under the assumption that Y is smooth. The proof of our criterion rely on a new description of the dualizing sheaf of Y established in this article.
Let a complex algebraic reductive group $\bf G$ act on a complex algebraic manifold $\bf X$. For a $\bf G$-invariant subvariety $Ξ$ of the nilpotent cone $\mathcal{N}(\mathfrak{g}^*)\subset \mathfrak{g}^*$ we define a notion of $Ξ$-symplectic complexity of $\bf X$. This notion generalizes the notion of complexity defined in [Vin86]. We prove several properties of this notion, and relate it to the notion of $Ξ$-complexity defined in [AG] motivated by its relation with representation theory.
This is a translation in English of version 5 of the article arXiv:1404.3998, which is itself an introduction to arXiv:1209.5352. We explain all the ideas of the proof of the following theorem. For any reductive group G over a global function field, we use the cohomology of G-shtukas with multiple modifications and the geometric Satake equivalence to prove the global Langlands correspondence for G in the "automorphic to Galois" direction. Moreover we obtain a canonical decomposition of the spaces of cuspidal automorphic forms indexed by global Langlands parameters. The proof does not rely at a…
The symplectic implosion construction of Guillemin, Jeffrey and Sjamaar associates to a Hamiltonian action of a compact group K on a symplectic manifold X its 'imploded cross section'. When X is a complex projective variety and K acts linearly on X, this construction is closely related to geometric invariant theory (GIT) for the action on X of a maximal unipotent subgroup U of the complexification G of K. The aim of this paper is to generalise symplectic implosion to give a symplectic construction for GIT-like quotients by unipotent radicals U of arbitrary parabolic subgroups P of the complex …
The $L^2$-cohomology of a locally symmetric variety is known to have the topological interpretation as the intersection homology of its Baily-Borel Satake compactification. In this article, we observe that even without the Hermitian hypothesis, the $L^p$-cohomology of an arithmetic quotient, for $p$ finite and sufficiently large, is isomorphic to the ordinary cohomology of its reductive Borel-Serre compactification. We use this to generalize a theorem of Mumford concerning homogeneous vector bundles, their invariant Chern forms and the canonical extensions of the bundles; here, though, we are …
