The article investigates the following question: given a projective variety X acted on by a connected and reductive group G, which is the relationship between the Gromov-Witten invariants of X and those of X//G? In this study we shall also try to give an algebraic approach to the so called Hamiltonian Gromov-Witten invariants which have appeared rather recenly in the literature.
We make precise conjectures relating the genus zero Gromov-Witten theory of a nonabelian GIT quotient X//G to that of the associated abelian quotient X//T by a maximal torus T in G.These conjectures imply in particular closed formulas for the J-functions (that is, the generating functions for 1-point Gromov-Witten invariants) of all generalized flag manifolds of classical A, B, C and D types. These formulas are proved in the second part of the paper.
This is the second in a sequence of papers in which we construct a quantum version of the Kirwan map from the equivariant quantum cohomology of a smooth polarized complex projective variety with the action of a connected complex reductive group to the orbifold quantum cohomology of its geometric invariant theory quotient, and prove that it intertwines the genus zero gauged Gromov-Witten potential with the genus zero Gromov-Witten graph potential. In this part we construct virtual fundamental classes on the moduli spaces used in the construction of the quantum Kirwan map and the gauged Gromov-W…
This is the third in a sequence of papers in which we construct a quantum version of the Kirwan map from the equivariant quantum cohomology of a smooth polarized complex projective variety with the action of a connected complex reductive group to the orbifold quantum cohomology of its geometric invariant theory quotient, and prove that it intertwines the genus zero gauged Gromov-Witten potential with the genus zero Gromov-Witten graph potential. We also give a formula for a solution to the quantum differential equation in terms of a localized gauged potential. These results overlap with those …
This is the first in a sequence of papers in which we construct a quantum version of the Kirwan map from the equivariant quantum cohomology $QH_G(X)$ of a smooth complex projective variety X with the action of a connected complex reductive group $G$ to the orbifold quantum cohomology $QH(X//G)$ of its geometric invariant theory quotient $X//G$, and prove that it intertwines the genus zero gauged Gromov-Witten potential of X with the genus zero Gromov-Witten graph potential of $X//G$.
We construct a global B-model for weighted homogeneous polynomials based on K. Saito's theory of primitive forms. Our main motivation is to give a rigorous statement of the so called global mirror symmetry conjecture relating Gromov-Witten invariants and Fan--Jarvis--Ruan--Witten invariants. Furthermore, our construction allows us to generalize the notion of a quasi-modular form and holomorphic anomaly equations. Finally, we prove the global mirror symmetry conjecture for the Fermat polynomials.
The moduli space of stable quotients introduced by Marian-Oprea-Pandharipande provides a natural compactification of the space of morphisms from nonsingular curves to a nonsingular projective variety and carries a natural virtual class. We show that the analogue of Givental's J-function for the resulting twisted projective invariants is described by the same mirror hypergeometric series as the corresponding Gromov-Witten invariants (which arise from the moduli space of stable maps), but without the mirror transform (in the Calabi-Yau case). This implies that the stable quotients and Gromov-Wit…
We give a formula of the framed one-leg orbifold Gromov-Witten vertex where the leg is gerby with isotropy group $\bZ_m$. Then we use this formula to compute the Gromov-Witten invariants of the local $\cB\bZ_m$ gerbe. We will also compute some examples of the degree 1 and degree 2 $\bZ_2$-Hodge integrals.
We prove that genus zero Gromov--Witten invariants of a smooth scheme relative to a smooth divisor coincide with genus zero orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of an appropriate root stack construction along the divisor.
I prove a formula expressing the descendent genus g Gromov-Witten invariants of a projective variety X in terms of genus 0 invariants of its symmetric product stack S^{g+1}(X). When X is a point, the latter are structure constants of the symmetric group, and we obtain a new way of calculating the Gromov-Witten invariants of a point.
We propose an approach via Frobenius manifolds to the study (began in math.AG/0407254) of the relation between rational Gromov-Witten invariants of nonabelian quotients X//G and those of the corresponding ``abelianized'' quotients X//T, for T a maximal torus in G. The ensuing conjecture expresses the Gromov-Witten potential of X//G in terms of the potential of X//T. We prove this conjecture when the nonabelian quotients are partial flag manifolds.
Theta functions were defined for varieties with effective anticanonical divisor and are related to certain punctured Gromov-Witten invariants. In this paper we show that in the case of a log Calabi-Yau surface (X,D) with smooth very ample anticanonical divisor we can circumvent the notion of punctured Gromov-Witten invariants and relate theta functions and their multiplicative structure to certain 2-marked log Gromov-Witten invariants. This is a natural extension of the correspondence between wall functions and 1-marked log Gromov-Witten invariants.
We construct the Gromov-Witten invariants of moduli of stable morphisms to $\Pf$ with fields. This is the all genus mathematical theory of the Guffin-Sharpe-Witten model, and is a modified twisted Gromov-Witten invariants of $\Pf$. These invariants are constructed using the cosection localization of Kiem-Li, an algebro-geometric analogue of Witten's perturbed equations in Landau-Ginzburg theory. We prove that these invariants coincide, up to sign, with the Gromov-Witten invariants of quintics.
For any smooth complex projective variety X and smooth very ample hypersurface Y in X, we develop the technique of genus zero relative Gromov-Witten invariants of Y in X in algebro-geometric terms. We prove an equality of cycles in the Chow groups of the moduli spaces of relative stable maps that relates these relative invariants to the Gromov-Witten invariants of X and Y. Given the Gromov-Witten invariants of X, we show that these relations are sufficient to compute all relative invariants, as well as all genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of Y whose homology and cohomology classes are induc…
We use Pixton's relations to prove a reconstruction theorem for genus 2 Gromov-Witten invariants in the style of Kontsevich-Manin (genus 0) and Getzler (genus 1). We also calculate genus 2 (descendant) Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^2$ blown up at a finite number of points in general position.
New relations among the genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants of a complex projective manifold $X$ are exhibited. When the cohomology of $X$ is generated by divisor classes and classes ``with vanishing one-point invariants,'' the relations determine many-point invariants in terms of one-point invariants.
We describe an algorithm for computing certain characteristic numbers of surface scrolls using degenerations. As a corollary we obtain a method for computing the corresponding Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannians.
Given a smooth projective variety $X$ and a smooth divisor $D\subset X$. We study relative Gromov-Witten invariants of $(X,D)$ and the corresponding orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of the $r$-th root stack $X_{D,r}$. For sufficiently large $r$, we prove that orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $X_{D,r}$ are polynomials in $r$. Moreover, higher genus relative Gromov-Witten invariants of $(X,D)$ are exactly the constant terms of the corresponding higher genus orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $X_{D,r}$. We also provide a new proof for the equality between genus zero relative and orbifold G…
Gromov-Witten invariants have been constructed to be deformation invariant, but their behavior under other transformations is subtle. In this note we show that logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants are also invariant under appropriately defined logarithmic modifications.
We state and prove a topological recursion relation that expresses any genus-g Gromov-Witten invariant of a projective manifold with at least a (3g-1)-st power of a cotangent line class in terms of invariants with fewer cotangent line classes. For projective spaces, we prove that these relations together with the Virasoro conditions are sufficient to calculate the full Gromov-Witten potential. This gives the first computationally feasible way to determine the higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of projective spaces.
We study the enumerative significance of the s-pointed genus zero Gromov-Witten invariant on a homogeneous space X. For that, we give an interpretation in terms of rational curves on X.
We compute the degree of the variety parametrizing rational ruled surfaces of degree d in the projective space by relating the problem to Gromov-Witten invariants and Quantum cohomology.
We explore the theory of connected Gromov-Witten invariants of the symmetric product stack [Sym^n(A_r)]. We derive closed-form expressions for all equivariant invariants with two insertions and reveal a natural correspondence between the theory and the relative Gromov-Witten theory of the threefold A_r x P^1. When n is less than or equal to 3, we determine 3-point (usual) Gromov-Witten invariants of [Sym^n(A_1)].
We prove that the genus-0 invariants in K-theoretic Gromov--Witten theory are governed by an integrable hierarchy of hydrodynamic type. If the K-theoretic quantum product is semisimple, then we also prove the completeness of the hierarchy.
The purpose of this short article is to prove a product formula relating the log Gromov-Witten invariants of $V \times W$ with those of $V$ and $W$ in the case the log structure on $V$ is trivial.
We use mirror formulas for the stable quotients analogue of Givental's J-function for twisted projective invariants obtained in a previous paper to obtain mirror formulas for the analogues of the double and triple Givental's J-functions (with descendants at all marked points) in this setting. We then observe that the genus 0 stable quotients invariants need not satisfy the divisor, string, or dilaton relations of the Gromov-Witten theory, but they do possess the integrality properties of the genus 0 three-point Gromov-Witten invariants of Calabi-Yau manifolds. We also relate the stable quotien…
We define the Gromov-Witten invariants for the parabolic bundles over an orbifold $C$ in various situation. Those bring us to refine this notion to get an accurate computation of the number of maximal subbundles of a sufficiently general parabolic bundle by means of the Intriligator-Varfa formula.
We present a recursive algorithm computing all the genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants from a finite number of initial ones, for Fano varieties with generically tame semi-simple quantum (and small quantum) (p, p)- type cohomology, whose first Chern class is a strictly positive combination of effective integral basic divisors.
We prove a conjecture of Artur Elezi in a generalized form suggested by Givental. Namely, our main result relates genus-0 Gromov--Witten invariants of a bundle space with such invariants of the base, provided that the fiber is a toric manifold. When the base is the point, a new proof of mirror theorems by A. Givental and by H. Iritani for toric manifolds is obtained.
We show that the equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of a projective homogeneous space G/P exhibit Graham-positivity: when expressed as polynomials in the positive roots, they have nonnegative coefficients.
Using obstruction bundles, composition law and the localization formula, we compute certain 3-point genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the Hilbert scheme of 3-points on the complex projective plane. Our results partially verify Ruan's conjecture about quantum corrections for this Hilbert scheme.
We consider the question of how geometric structures of a Deligne-Mumford stack affect its Gromov-Witten invariants. The two geometric structures studied here are {\em gerbes} and {\em root constructions}. In both cases, we explain conjectures on Gromov-Witten theory for these stacks and survey some recent progress on these conjectures.
We study the Gromov-Witten theory of $K_{\mathsf{P}^1\times\mathsf{P}^1}$ and some Calabi-Yau hypersurface in toric variety. We give a direct geometric proof of the holomorphic anomaly euqation for $K_{\mathsf{P}^1\times\mathsf{P}^1}$ in the form predicted by B-model physics. We also calculate the closed formula of genus one quasimap invariants of Calabi-Yau hypersurface in $\mathsf{P}^{m-1}\times\mathsf{P}^{n-1}$ after restricting second Kähler parameter to zero. By wall-crossing theorem between Gromov-Witten and quasimap invariants, we can obtain the genus one Gromov-Witten invariants.
We consider four approaches to relative Gromov-Witten theory and Gromov-Witten theory of degenerations: Jun Li's original approach, Bumsig Kim's logarithmic expansions, Abramovich-Fantechi's orbifold expansions, and a logarithmic theory without expansions due to Gross-Siebert and Abramovich-Chen. We exhibit morphisms relating these moduli spaces and prove that their virtual fundamental classes are compatible by pushforward through these morphisms. This implies that the Gromov-Witten invariants associated to all four of these theories are identical.
We define Gromov-Witten classes and invariants of smooth proper tame Deligne-Mumford stacks of finite presentation over a Dedekind domain. We prove that they are deformation invariants and verify the fundamental axioms. For a smooth proper tame Deligne-Mumford stack over a Dedekind domain, we prove that the invariants of fibers in different characteristics are the same. We show that genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants define a potential which satisfies the WDVV equation and we deduce from this a reconstruction theorem for genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants in arbitrary characteristic.
In this expository article, we explain how to use localization to compute Gromov-Witten invariants of smooth toric varieties and orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stacks.
We develop a formalism for relative Gromov-Witten invariants of Li that is analogous to the Symplectic Field Theory of Eliashberg, Givental, and Hofer. This formalism allows us to express natural degeneration formulae in terms of generating functions and re-derive the formulae of Caporaso-Harris, Ran, and Vakil. In addition, our framework gives a homology theory analogous to SFT Homology.
In the first part of the paper, we give an explicit algorithm to compute the (genus zero) Gromov-Witten invariants of blow-ups of an arbitrary convex projective variety in some points if one knows the Gromov-Witten invariants of the original variety. In the second part, we specialize to blow-ups of P^r and show that many invariants of these blow-ups can be interpreted as numbers of rational curves on P^r having specified global multiplicities or tangent directions in the blown-up points. We give various numerical examples, including a new easy way to determine the famous multiplicity d^{-3} fo…
For any smooth projective variety with a C* action, we reduce the problem of computing its Gromov-Witten invariants to the similar problem for its fixed locus. Starting from the stacky version of variation of GIT for our variety, we construct the building blocks for the fixed loci of the moduli space of stable maps. We use this construction to compute their contribution to the virtual fundamental class.
This article is an elaboration of a talk given at an international conference on Operator Theory, Quantum Probability, and Noncommutative Geometry held during December~20--23, 2004, at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. The lecture was meant for a general audience, and also prospective research students, the idea of the quantum cohomology based on the Gromov--Witten invariants. Of course there are many important aspects that are not discussed here.
We give explicit formulas for the multipoint series of Gromov-Witten invariants of CP^1. We use the recursions of the Toda hierarchy to calculate these in degree 0, and the Toda equation and the degree 0 formulas to extend the calculation to higher degrees. We also obtain formulas for the Hodge series for the Hodge classes lambda_g and lambda_{g-1}.
In this paper, we give a new genus-4 topological recursion relation for Gromov-Witten invariants of compact symplectic manifolds via Pixton's relations on the moduli space of curves. As an application, we prove Pixton's relations imply a known topological recursion relation on $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,1}$ for genus $g\leq4$.
Given a smooth target curve $X$, we explore the relationship between Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$ relative to a smooth divisor and orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of the $r$-th root stack along the divisor. We proved that relative invariants are equal to the $r^0$-coefficient of the corresponding orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $r$-th root stack for $r$ sufficiently large. Our result provides a precise relation between relative and orbifold invariants of target curves generalizing the result of Abramovich-Cadman-Wise to higher genus invariants of curves. Moreover, when $r$ is suffici…
Using degeneration techniques, we prove the correspondence of tropical curve counts and log Gromov-Witten invariants with general incidence and psi-class conditions in toric varieties for genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. We also relate the log invariants to the ordinary ones, in particular explaining the appearance of negative multiplicities in the descendant correspondence result of Mark Gross.
We prove a simple equivalence between the virtual count of rational curves in the total space of an anti-nef line bundle and the virtual count of rational curves maximally tangent to a smooth section of the dual line bundle. We conjecture a generalization to direct sums of line bundles.
We study the quasimap invariants of elliptic and K3 fibrations. Oberdieck and Pixton conjectured that the Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic fibrations are quasi-modular forms. Analogously, we propose similar conjecture for the quasimap potentials of elliptic fibrations. We also conjecture some finite generation properties of quasimap potentials of K3 fibrations. Via wall-crossing conjecture, this will imply some quasi-modularity of the Gromov-Witten potentials of K3 fibrations. We provide some evidences for our conjectures through several examples. The method here can be further generalized…
We generalize the formula of Gromov-Witten-Welschinger invariants of $\mathbb{C} P^3$ established by E. Brugallé and P. Georgieva in [BG16b] to $\mathbb{C} P^3\#\overline{\mathbb{C} P}^3$. Using pencils of quadrics, some real and complex enumerative invariants of $\mathbb{C} P^3\#\overline{\mathbb{C} P}^3$ can be written as the combination of the enumerative invariants of the blow up of $\mathbb{C} P^2$ at two real points.
We obtain mirror formulas for the genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants of projective Calabi-Yau complete intersections. We follow the approach previously used for projective hypersurfaces by extending the scope of its algebraic results; there is little change in the geometric aspects. As an application, we check the genus 1 BPS integrality predictions in low degrees for all projective complete intersections of dimensions 3, 4, and 5.
We define Gromov-Witten classes and invariants of smooth projective schemes of finite presentation over a Dedekind domain. We prove that they are deformation invariants and verify the fundamental axioms. For a smooth projective scheme over a Dedekind domain, we prove that the invariants of fibers in different characteristics are the same. We show that genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants define a potential which satisfies the WDVV equation and we deduce from this a reconstruction theorem for genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants in arbitrary characteristic.
The purpose of the article is to give a proof of a conjecture of Maulik and Pandharipande for genus 2 and 3. As a result, it gives a way to determine Gromov-Witten invariants of the quintic threefold for genus 2 and 3.
In this article we explicitly compute the number of maximal subbundles of rank $k$ of a generically stable bundle of rank $r$ and degree $d$ over a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g\ge 2$ over $\C$, when the dimension of the quot scheme of maximal subbundles is zero. Our method is to describe the this number purely in terms of the Gromov invariants of the Grassmannian and then use the formula of Vafa and Intriligator to compute them.
The Gromov-Witten theory of Deligne-Mumford stacks is a recent development, and hardly any computations have been done beyond 3-point genus 0 invariants. This paper provides explicit recursions which, together with some invariants computed by hand, determine all genus 0 invariants of the stack P^2_{D,2}. Here D is a smooth plane curve and P^2_{D,2} is locally isomorphic to the stack quotient [U/(Z/(2))], where U -> V \subset P^2 is a double cover branched along D \cap V. The introduction discusses an enumerative application of these invariants.
We study orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of the $r$-th root stack $X_{D,r}$ with a pair of mid-ages when $r$ is sufficiently large. We prove that genus $g$ invariants with a pair of mid-ages $k_a/r$ and $1-k_a/r$ are polynomials in $k_a$ and the $k_a^i$-coefficients are polynomials in $r$ with degree bounded by $2g$. Moreover, genus zero invariants with a pair of mid-ages are independent of the choice of mid-ages. As an application, we obtain an identity for relative Gromov--Witten theory which can be viewed as a modified version of the usual loop axiom.
