For a small category K enriched over a suitable monoidal category V, the free completion of K under colimits is the presheaf category [K*,V]. If K is large, its free completion under colimits is the V-category PK of small presheaves on K, where a presheaf is small if it is a left Kan extension of some presheaf with small domain. We study the existence of limits and of monoidal closed structures on PK.
We prove that for each locally $α$-presentable category $\mathcal K$ there exists a regular cardinal $γ$ such that any $α$-accessible functor out of $\mathcal K$ (into another locally $α$-presentable category) is continuous if and only if it preserves $γ$-small limits; as a consequence we obtain a new adjoint functor theorem specific to the $α$-accessible functors out of $\mathcal K$. Afterwards we generalize these results to the enriched setting and deduce, among other things, that a small $\mathcal V$-category is accessible if and only if it is Cauchy complete.
We show that every small homotopy functor from spectra to spectra is weakly equivalent to a filtered colimit of representable functors represented in cofibrant spectra. Moreover, we present this classification as a Quillen equivalence of the category of small functors from spectra to spectra equipped with the homotopy model structure and the opposite of the pro-category of spectra with the strict model structure.
There is a well-known correspondence between coherent theories (and their interpretations) and coherent categories (resp. functors), hence the (2,1)-category $\mathbf{Coh_{\sim}}$ (of small coherent categories, coherent functors and all natural isomorphisms) is of logical interest. We prove that this category admits all small 2-limits and 2-colimits (in the ($\infty $,1)-categorical sense), and prove a 2-categorical small object argument to provide weak factorisation systems for coherent functors.
The homotopy theory of small functors is a useful tool for studying various questions in homotopy theory. In this paper, we develop the homotopy theory of small functors from spectra to spectra, and study its interplay with Spanier-Whitehead duality and enriched representability in the dual category of spectra. We note that the Spanier-Whitehead duality functor $D\colon \mathrm{Sp}\rightarrow \mathrm{Sp}^{\mathrm{op}}$ factors through the category of small functors from spectra to spectra and construct a new model structure on the category of small functors, which is Quillen equivalent to $\ma…
The paper studies analytic functors between presheaf categories. Generalising results of A. Joyal and of R. Hasegawa for analytic endofunctors on the category of sets, we give two characterisations of analytic functors between presheaf categories over groupoids: (i) as functors preserving filtered colimits, quasi-pullbacks, and cofiltered limits; and (ii) as functors preserving filtered colimits and wide quasi-pullbacks. The development establishes that small groupoids, analytic functors between their presheaf categories, and quasi-cartesian natural transformations between them form a 2-catego…
Our goal is to derive some families of maps, also known as functions, from injective maps and surjective maps; this can be useful in various fields of mathematics. Let A be a small concrete category. We define a functor F, cometic functor, from A to the category Set and a natural transformation π, called cometic projection, from F to the inclusion functor of A into Set such that the F-image of every monomorphism A is an injective map and the components of πare surjective maps. Also, we give a nontrivial application of F and π.
The work is devoted to the extension groups in the category of functors from a small category to an additive category with an Abelian structure in the sense of Heller. It is constructed a spectral sequence which converges to the extension group. Example for diagrams of locally convex spaces is given.
It is known that, for $C$ an abelian category and $I$ small, the functor category $C^I$ is again abelian; thus we can do homology in such categories, and examine how it relates to homology in $C$ itself. However, there does not seem to be any good reference collecting these ideas together. This article seeks to fill the gap by showing that homology in $C^I$ behaves as one would expect.
We introduce and study a general notion of polynomial functor from a small monoidal symmetric category whose unit is an initial object and give a classification result of polynomial functors of degree smaller of equal to n modulo those of degree smaller of equal to n-1 in the case of a category of hermitian spaces.
We define the notion of an indexed profunctor over a 2-category, and use it to develop an abstract theory of limits. The theory subsumes (conical) limits, weighted limits, ends and Kan extensions. Results include an abstract version of the theorem that right adjoint functors preserve limits, and an abstract account of the phenomenon that the comparison arrow implicated in the preservation of a limit by a functor is natural in any functorial variable the functor happens to depend on. These results make an extensive use of the data and axioms of an indexed profunctor over a 2-category.
Order-enriched solid functors, as presented in this paper in two versions, enjoy many of the strong properties of their ordinary counterparts, including the transfer of the existence of weighted (co)limits from their codomains to their domains. The ordinary version of the notion first appeared in Trnková's work on automata theory of the 1970s and was subsequently studied by others under various names, before being put into a general enriched context by Anghel. Our focus in this paper is on differentiating the order-enriched notion from the ordinary one, mostly in terms of the functor's behavio…
We study determinant functors which are defined on a triangulated category and take values in a Picard category. The two main results are the existence of a universal determinant functor for every small triangulated category, and a comparison theorem for determinant functors on a triangulated category with a non-degenerate bounded t-structure and determinant functors on its heart. For a small triangulated category T we give a natural definition of groups K_0(T) and K_1(T) in terms of the universal determinant functor on T, and we show that K_i(T)=K_i(E) for i=0 and 1 if T has a non-degenerate …
We generalize and greatly simplify the approach of Lydakis and Dundas-Röndigs-Østvær to construct an L-stable model structure for small functors from a closed symmetric monoidal model category V to a V-model category M, where L is a small cofibrant object of V. For the special case V=M=S_* pointed simplicial sets and L=S^1 this is the classical case of linear functors and has been described as the first stage of the Goodwillie tower of a homotopy functor. We show, that our various model structures are compatible with a closed symmetric monoidal product on small functors. We compare them with o…
We thoroughly treat several familiar and less familiar definitions and results concerning categories, functors and distributors enriched in a base quantaloid Q. In analogy with V-category theory we discuss such things as adjoint functors, (pointwise) left Kan extensions, weighted (co)limits, presheaves and free (co)completion, Cauchy completion and Morita equivalence. With an appendix on the universality of the quantaloid Dist(Q) of Q-enriched categories and distributors.
In this paper we give sufficient conditions for lifting an enhanced factorization system $ (\mathcal{E}, \mathcal{M}) $ on a $ 2 $-category $ \mathbf{D} $ to the functor $ 2 $-category $ \mathbf{D}^{\mathbf{C}} $, where $ \mathbf{C} $ is a small $ 2 $-category. Due to previous work of Lack, our work provides coherence results for $ 2 $-monads on functor $ 2 $-categories. These coherence results are of immediate interest to an ongoing collaboration of Guillou, May, Merling, and Osorno on equivariant infinite loop space theory.
If C and D are varieties of algebras in the sense of general algebra, then by a representable functor C --> D we understand a functor which, when composed with the forgetful functor D --> Set, gives a representable functor in the classical sense; Freyd showed that these functors are determined by D-coalgebra objects of C. Let Rep(C,D) denote the category of all such functors, a full subcategory of Cat(C,D), opposite to the category of D-coalgebras in C. It is proved that Rep(C,D) has small colimits, and in certain situations, explicit constructions for the representing coalgebras are obtained.…
Let $D$ be a large category which is cocomplete. We construct a model structure (in the sense of Quillen) on the category of small functors from $D$ to simplicial sets. As an application we construct homotopy localization functors on the category of simplicial sets which satisfy a stronger universal property than the customary homotopy localization functors do.
What are the fiber functors on small additive monoidal categories C which are not abelian? We give an answer which leads to a new Tannaka duality theorem for bialgebroids generalizing earlier results by Phung Ho Hai. The construction reveals a sheaf theoretic interpretation in so far as the reconstructed bialgebroid H has comodule category equivalent to the category of T-sheaves w.r.t. a monoidal Grothendieck topology on C. We also prove an existence theorem for fiber functors on small additive monoidal categories with bounded fusion and weak kernels. For certain autonomous categories a genera…
Consider the obvious functor from the unbounded derived category of all finitely generated modules over a left noetherian ring $R$ to the unbounded derived category of all modules. We answer the natural question whether this functor defines an equivalence onto the full subcategory of complexes with finitely generated cohomology modules in two special cases. If $R$ is a quasi-Frobenius ring of infinite global dimension, then this functor is not full. If $R$ has finite left global dimension, this functor is an equivalence. We also prove variants of the latter assertion for left coherent rings, f…
We prove an adjoint functor theorem in the setting of categories enriched in a monoidal model category $\mathcal V$ admitting certain limits. When $\mathcal V$ is equipped with the trivial model structure this recaptures the enriched version of Freyd's adjoint functor theorem. For non-trivial model structures, we obtain new adjoint functor theorems of a homotopical flavour - in particular, when $\mathcal V$ is the category of simplical sets we obtain a homotopical adjoint functor theorem appropriate to the $\infty$-cosmoi of Riehl and Verity. We also investigate accessibility in the enriched s…
A classification is provided of functors, in particular polynomial ones, from a category with a zero object in which every object is a finite sum of copies of a generating object, into an abelian category. This classification is extended to include functors from a category with sums and a zero object, carrying a small, regular projective generator.
This paper presents a description of the fourth dimension quotient, using the theory of limits of functors from the category of free presentations of a given group to the category of abelian groups. A functorial description of a quotient of the third Fox subgroup is given and, as a consequence, an identification (not involving an isolator) of the third Fox subgroup is obtained. It is shown that the limit over the category of free representations of the third Fox quotient represents the composite of two derived quadratic functors.
Given Gray-categories $P$ and $L$, there is a Gray-category $\mathrm{Tricat}_{\mathrm{ls}}(P,L)$ of locally strict trihomomorphisms with domain $P$ and codomain $L$, tritransformations, trimodifications, and perturbations. If the domain $P$ is small and the codomain $L$ is cocomplete, we show that this Gray-category is isomorphic as a Gray-category to the Gray-category $\mathrm{Ps}$-$T$-$\mathrm{Alg}$ of pseudo algebras, pseudo functors, transformations, and modifications for a Gray-monad $T$ derived from left Kan extension. Inspired by a similar situation in two-dimensional monad theory, we a…
In this work we construct an extension for the category of 0-modules by analogy with [H.-J. Baues and G. Wirshing, Cohomology of small categories, J. Pure Appl. Algebra, 38(1985), 187-211]. The 0-cohomology functor becomes a derived functor in the extended category. As an application of this construction we calculate the cohomological dimension of so-called 0-free monoids.
As composites of constant, (co)product, identity, and powerset functors, Kripke polynomial functors form a relevant class of $\mathsf{Set}$-functors in the theory of coalgebras. The main goal of this paper is to expand the theory of limits in categories of coalgebras of Kripke polynomial functors to the context of quantale-enriched categories. To assume the role of the powerset functor we consider "powerset-like" functors based on the Hausdorff $\mathsf{V}$-category structure. As a starting point, we show that for a lifting of a $\mathsf{SET}$-functor to a topological category $\mathsf{X}$ ove…
Given a complete, cocomplete category $\mathcal C$, we investigate the problem of describing those small categories $I$ such that the diagonal functor $Δ:\mathcal C\to {\rm Functors}(I,\mathcal C)$ is a Frobenius functor. This condition can be rephrased by saying that the limits and the colimits of functors $I\to\mathcal C$ are naturally isomorphic. We find necessary conditions on $I$ for a certain class of categories $\mathcal C$, and, as an application, we give both necessary and sufficient conditions in the two special cases $\mathcal C={\bf Set}$ or $_R\mathcal M$, the category of left mod…
In this paper we introduce sigma limits (which we write $σ$-limits), a concept that interpolates between lax and pseudolimits: for a fixed family $Σ$ of arrows of a 2-category $\mathcal{A}$, a $σ$-cone for a $2$-functor $\mathcal{A} \stackrel{F}{\rightarrow} \mathcal{B}$ is a lax cone such that the structural 2-cells corresponding to the arrows of $Σ$ are invertible. The conical $σ$-limit of $F$ is the universal $σ$-cone. Similary we define $σ$-natural transformations and weighted $σ$-limits. We consider also the case of bilimits. We develop the theory of $σ$-limits and $σ$-bilimits, whose imp…
Local cohomology functors are constructed for the category of cohomological functors on an essentially small triangulated category T equipped with an action of a commutative noetherian ring. This is used to establish a local-global principle and to develop a notion of stratification, for T and the cohomological functors on it, analogous to such concepts for compactly generated triangulated categories.
Like categories, small 2-categories have well-understood classifying spaces. In this paper, we deal with homotopy types represented by 2-diagrams of 2-categories. Our results extend to homotopy colimits of 2-functors lower categorical analogues that have been classically used in algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory, such as the Homotopy Invariance Theorem (by Bousfield and Kan), the Homotopy Colimit Theorem (Thomason), Theorems A and B (Quillen), or the Homotopy Cofinality Theorem (Hirschhorn).
This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and K…
We can define a module to be an exact functor on a small abelian category. This is explained and shown to be equivalent to the usual definition but it does offer a different perspective, inspired by the notions from model theory of imaginary sort and interpretation. A number of examples are worked through.
In this paper we present a simple database definition language: that of categories and functors. A database schema is a small category and an instance is a set-valued functor on it. We show that morphisms of schemas induce three "data migration functors", which translate instances from one schema to the other in canonical ways. These functors parameterize projections, unions, and joins over all tables simultaneously and can be used in place of conjunctive and disjunctive queries. We also show how to connect a database and a functional programming language by introducing a functorial connection…
We prove general adjoint functor theorems for weakly (co)complete $n$-categories. This class of $n$-categories includes the homotopy $n$-categories of (co)complete $\infty$-categories, so these $n$-categories do not admit all small (co)limits in general. We also introduce Brown representability for (homotopy) $n$-categories and prove a Brown representability theorem for localizations of compactly generated $n$-categories. This class of $n$-categories includes the homotopy $n$-categories of presentable $\infty$-categories if $n \geq 2$, and the homotopy $n$-categories of presentable stable $\in…
Let C be small category and A an arbitrary category. Consider the category C(A) whose objects are functors from C to A, and whose morphisms are natural transformations. Given a functor F : A --> B one obtains an induced functor F_C : C(A) --> C(B) . If A and B are abelian categories, we have that C(A) and C(B) are also abelian, and one has two functors R(F_C) : D(C(A)) --> D(C(B)) and (RF)_ C : C(D(A)) --> C(D (B)). The goals of this paper are: 1) to find a relationship between D (C(A)) and C(D(A)); 2) to relate the functors R(F_C) and (RF)_C. As an application, we prove a version of Mukai's T…
An algebraically exact category in one that admits all of the limits and colimits which every variety of algebras possesses and every forgetful functor between varieties preserves, and which verifies the same interactions between these limits and colimits as hold in any variety. Such categories were studied by Adámek, Lawvere and Rosický: they characterised them as the categories with small limits and sifted colimits for which the functor taking sifted colimits is continuous. They conjectured that a complete and sifted-cocomplete category should be algebraically exact just when it is Barr-exac…
We show that differential calculus (in its usual form, or in the general form of topological differential calculus) can be fully imdedded into a functor category (functors from a small category of anchord tangent algebras to anchored sets). To prepare this approach, we define a new, symmetric, presentation of differential calculus, whose main feature is the central r{ô}le played by the anchor map, which we study in detail. Our aim for developing this theory is twofold: (1) define a setting for calculus over any commutative ring, including finite rings; (2) define a setting that can be generali…
We develop the theory of (op)fibrations of 2-multicategories and use it to define abstract six-functor-formalisms. We also give axioms for Wirthmüller and Grothendieck formalisms (where either $f^!=f^*$ or $f_!=f_*$) or intermediate formalisms where we have e.g. a natural morphism $f_! \rightarrow f_*$. Finally, it is shown that a fibered multiderivator (in particular, a closed monoidal derivator) can be interpreted as a six-functor-formalism on diagrams (small categories). This gives, among other things, a considerable simplification of the axioms and of the proofs of basic properties, and cl…
The derived category $D[C,V]$ of the Grothendieck category of enriched functors $[C,V]$, where $V$ is a closed symmetric monoidal Grothendieck category and $C$ is a small $V$-category, is studied. We prove that if the derived category $D(V)$ of $V$ is a compactly generated triangulated category with certain reasonable assumptions on compact generators or $K$-injective resolutions, then the derived category $D[C,V]$ is also compactly generated triangulated. Moreover, an explicit description of these generators is given.
A folklore result in category theory is that a (weakly) Cartesian closed category with finite co-products is distributive. Usually, the proof of this small result is carried on using the fact that the exponential functor is right adjoint to the product functor. And, since functors having a right adjoint preserve co-limits, the result follows immediately. But, when we try to explicitly construct the arrows, things become a bit more involved. In rare cases, it is pretty useful to have the exact arrows that make this isomorphism to hold. The purpose of this note is to develop the explicit proof w…
We study finiteness properties, especially the noetherian property, the Krull dimension and a variation of finite presentation, in categories of polynomial functors from a small symmetric monoidal category whose unit is an initial object to an abelian category (notion introduced in this general setting in the work http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-00851869 joint with C. Vespa). We give also an application to functors related to automorphisms of free groups.
For a small $n$-category $\mathscr{C}$ and an $n$-topos $\mathscr{X}$, we study necessary and sufficient conditions for a functor $f \colon \mathscr{C} \to \mathscr{X}$ to determine a geometric morphism from $\mathscr{X}$ to the $n$-topos $\mathcal{P}(\mathscr{C})_n$ of presheaves on $\mathscr{C}$ for any $n \geq 1$. These results generalize and unify results of Lurie for $n=\infty$ and classical characterizations of flat functors (Diaconescu's theorem) for $n=1$. Interestingly, for $n=\infty$, our analogue of Diaconescu's theorem requires hypercompleteness. As an application, we show that the…
Consider a diagram of quasi-categories that admit and functors that preserve limits or colimits of a fixed shape. We show that any weighted limit whose weight is a projective cofibrant simplicial functor is again a quasi-category admitting these (co)limits and that they are preserved by the functors in the limit cone. In particular, the Bousfield-Kan homotopy limit of a diagram of quasi-categories admit any limits or colimits existing in and preserved by the functors in that diagram. In previous work, we demonstrated that the quasi-category of algebras for a homotopy coherent monad could be de…
Associated to each small category $C$, there is a category of $C$-shaped diagrams of simplicial sets and an $\infty$-category of $NC$-shaped homotopy coherent diagrams of spaces. We present a functor which exhibits the latter as the $\infty$-categorical localisation of the former at the objectwise weak homotopy equivalences. This builds on a Quillen equivalence between the projective and covariant model structures associated to $C$ due to Heuts-Moerdijk, as well as Cisinski's theory of $\infty$-categorical localisations. We use the localisation functor to give simplified proofs that the left (…
It is well-known that the category of presheaf functors is complete and cocomplete, and that the Yoneda embedding into the presheaf category preserves products. However, the Yoneda embedding does not preserve coproducts. It is perhaps less well-known that if we restrict the codomain of the Yoneda embedding to the full subcategory of limit-preserving functors, then this embedding preserves colimits, while still enjoying most of the other useful properties of the Yoneda embedding. We call this modified embedding the Lambek embedding. The category of limit-preserving functors is known to be a ref…
This paper is a continuation of [BaSh], where we studied the behaviour of the abelianization functor under inverse limits. Our main result in [BaSh] was that if $\mathcal{T}$ is a countable directed poset and $G:\mathcal{T}\to\mathcal{G} rp$ is a diagram of groups that satisfies the Mittag-Leffler condition, then the natural map $$\mathrm{Ab}({\lim}_{t\in\mathcal{T}}G_t)\to {\lim}_{t\in\mathcal{T}}\mathrm{Ab}(G_t)$$ is surjective, and its kernel is a cotorsion group. The abelianization is an example of a left adjoint functor from groups to abelian groups. In this paper we study the behaviour u…
This is a short textbook on Category Theory for Russian speaking students. It consists of three chapters: Categories and Functors, Representable Functors (including Adjoint Functors and (Co)limits) and Tensor Categories.
