We prove general adjoint functor theorems for weakly (co)complete $n$-categories. This class of $n$-categories includes the homotopy $n$-categories of (co)complete $\infty$-categories, so these $n$-categories do not admit all small (co)limits in general. We also introduce Brown representability for (homotopy) $n$-categories and prove a Brown representability theorem for localizations of compactly generated $n$-categories. This class of $n$-categories includes the homotopy $n$-categories of presentable $\infty$-categories if $n \geq 2$, and the homotopy $n$-categories of presentable stable $\infty$-categories for any $n \geq 1$.
We show that for the homotopy category K(Ab) of complexes of abelian groups, both Brown representability and Brown representability for the dual fail. We also provide an example of a localizing subcategory of K(Ab) for which the inclusion into K(Ab) does not have a right adjoint.
We exhibit a triangulated category T having both products and coproducts, and a triangulated subcategory S of T which is both localizing and colocalizing, for which neither a Bousfield localization nor a colocalization exists. It follows that neither the category S nor its dual satisfy Brown representability. Our example involves an abelian category whose derived category does not have small Hom-sets.
In a well generated triangulated category T, given a regular cardinal a, we consider the following problems: given a functor from the category of a-compact objects to abelian groups that preserves products of <a objects and takes exact triangles to exact sequences, is it the restriction of a representable functor in T? Is every natural transformation between two such restricted representable functors induced by a map between the representatives? If the answer to both questions is positive we say that T satisfies a-Adams representability. A classical result going back to Brown and Adams shows t…
For a triangulated category with products we develop a method for constructing a nice set of cogenerators, allowing us to prove a formal criterion in order to satisfy Brown representability for covariant functors. We apply this criterion for showing that both homotopy category of projective modules and homotopy category of projective objects in a category of functors from a small category to a module category satisfy this kind of representability. In particular, homotopy category of projective complexes satisfies Brown representability for covariant functors.
We give a sufficient condition for an Ext-finite triangulated category to be saturated. Saturatedness means that every contravariant cohomological functor of finite type to vector spaces is representable. The condition consists in existence of a strong generator. We prove that the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth proper commutative and noncommutative varieties have strong generators, hence saturated. In contrast the similar category for a smooth compact analytic surface with no curves is not saturated.
We call product generator of an additive category a fixed object satisfying the property that every other object is a direct factor of a product of copies of it. In this paper we start with an additive category with products and images, e.g. a module category, and we are concerned with the homotopy category of complexes with entries in that additive category. We prove that Brown representability theorem is valid for the dual of the homotopy category if and only if the initial additive category has a product generator.
The notion of a group G acting on a group X is well-known. Fixing X, the corresponding functor Act(-,X) is representable by the group [X] of automorphisms of X. The notion of G-action on X has been generalized to the context of a semi-abelian category, but in this general context, the functor Act(-,X) is generally not representable. We investigate the representability of the functor Act(-,X) for the semi-abelian category, dual of the category of pointed objects of a topos E. The representability holds in particular when E is a Boolean topos or a topos of presheaves of sets, but does not hold i…
Adjoint functor theorems give necessary and sufficient conditions for a functor to admit an adjoint. In this paper we prove general adjoint functor theorems for functors between $\infty$-categories. One of our main results is an $\infty$-categorical generalization of Freyd's classical General Adjoint Functor Theorem. As an application of this result, we recover Lurie's adjoint functor theorems for presentable $\infty$-categories. We also discuss the comparison between adjunctions of $\infty$-categories and homotopy adjunctions, and give a treatment of Brown representability for $\infty$-catego…
We prove two representability theorems, up to homotopy, for presheaves taking values in a closed symmetric combinatorial model category \cat V. The first theorem resembles the Freyd representability theorem, the second theorem is closer to the Brown representability theorem. As an application we discuss a recognition principle for mapping spaces.
In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a functor to be representable in a strongly generated triangulated category which has a linear action by a graded ring, and we discuss some applications and examples.
This is the second paper in a series. In part I we developed deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we extend these (derived) deformation functors to an appropriate bicategory of artinian DG algebras and prove that these extended functors are pro-representable in a strong sense.
We define quasi--locally presentable categories as big unions of coreflective subcategories which are locally presentable. Under appropriate hypotheses we prove a representability theorem for exact contravariant functors defined on a quasi--locally presentable category taking values in abelian groups. We show that the abelianization of a well generated triangulated category is quasi--locally presentable and we obtain a new proof of Brown representability theorem. Examples of functors which are not representable are also given.
These notes are based on a series of five lectures given during the summer school ``Interactions between Homotopy Theory and Algebra'' held at the University of Chicago in 2004.
Given a fixed tensor triangulated category S we consider triangulated categories T together with an S-enrichment which is compatible with the triangulated structure of T. It is shown that, in this setting, an enriched analogue of Brown representability holds when both S and T are compactly generated. A natural class of examples of such enriched triangulated categories categories are module categories over separable monoids in S. In this context we prove a version of the Eilenberg-Watts theorem for exact coproduct and copower preserving S-functors, i.e., we show that any such functor between th…
We show that the homotopy category of a combinatorial stable model category $\ck$ is well generated. It means that each object $K$ of $\Ho(\ck)$ is an iterated weak colimit of $λ$-compact objects for some cardinal $λ$. A natural question is whether each $K$ is a weak colimit of $λ$-compact objects. We show that this is related to (generalized) Brown representability of $\Ho(\mathcal K)$.
Consider a complete abelian category which has an injective cogenerator. If its derived category is left--complete we show that the dual of this derived category satisfies Brown representability. In particular this is true for the derived category of an abelian AB$4^*$-$n$ category, for the derived category of quasi--coherent sheaves over a nice enough scheme (including the projective finitely dimensional space) and for the full subcategory of derived category of all sheaves over an algebraic stack consisting from complexes with quasi--coherent cohomology.
The homotopy theory of small functors is a useful tool for studying various questions in homotopy theory. In this paper, we develop the homotopy theory of small functors from spectra to spectra, and study its interplay with Spanier-Whitehead duality and enriched representability in the dual category of spectra. We note that the Spanier-Whitehead duality functor $D\colon \mathrm{Sp}\rightarrow \mathrm{Sp}^{\mathrm{op}}$ factors through the category of small functors from spectra to spectra and construct a new model structure on the category of small functors, which is Quillen equivalent to $\ma…
We prove for a large family of rings R that their lambda-pure global dimension is greater than one for each infinite regular cardinal lambda. This answers in negative a problem posed by Rosicky. The derived categories of such rings then do not satisfy the Adams lambda-representability for morphisms for any lambda. Equivalently, they are examples of well generated triangulated categories whose lambda-abelianization in the sense of Neeman is not a full functor for any lambda. In particular we show that given a compactly generated triangulated category, one may not be able to find a Rosicky funct…
We say that a projective class in a triangulated category with coproducts is perfect if the corresponding ideal is closed under coproducts of maps. We study perfect projective classes and the associated phantom and cellular towers. Given a perfect generating projective class, we show that every object is isomorphic to the homotopy colimit of a cellular tower associated to that object. Using this result and the Neeman's Freyd--style representability theorem we give a new proof of Brown Representability Theorem.
We study the notion of fundamental group in the framework of descent-exact homological categories. This setting is sufficiently wide to include several categories of "algebraic" nature such as the almost abelian categories, the semi-abelian categories, and the categories of topological semi-abelian algebras. For many adjunctions in this context, the fundamental groups are described by generalised Brown-Ellis-Hopf formulae for the integral homology of groups.

In 1988, Brown and Ellis published [3] a generalised Hopf formula for the higher homology of a group. Although substantially correct, their result lacks one necessary condition. We give here a counterexample to the result without that condition. The main aim of this paper is, however, to generalise this corrected result to derive formulae of Hopf type for the n-fold Cech derived functors of the lower central series functors Z_k. The paper ends with an application to algebraic K-theory.
This paper is the second in a series exploring the properties of a functor which assigns a homotopy double groupoid with connections to a Hausdorff space. We show that this functor satisfies a version of the van Kampen theorem, and so is a suitable tool for nonabelian, 2-dimensional, local-to-global problems. The methods are analogous to those developed by Brown and Higgins for similar theorems for other higher homotopy groupoids. An integral part of the proof is a detailed discussion of commutative cubes in a double category with connections, and a proof of the key result that any composition…
We use Janelidze's Categorical Galois Theory to extend Brown and Ellis's higher Hopf formulae for homology of groups to arbitrary semi-abelian monadic categories. Given such a category A and a chosen Birkhoff subcategory B of A, thus we describe the Barr-Beck derived functors of the reflector of A onto B in terms of centralization of higher extensions. In case A is the category Gp of all groups and B is the category Ab of all abelian groups, this yields a new proof for Brown and Ellis's formulae. We also give explicit formulae in the cases of groups vs. k-nilpotent groups, groups vs. k-solvabl…
In this paper we study the question of how to transfer homotopic structure from the category sD of simplicial objects in a fixed category D to D. To this end we use a sort of homotopy colimit s : sD --> D, which we call simple functor. For instance, the Bousfield-Kan homotopy colimit in a Quillen simplicial model category is an example of simple functor. As a remarkable example outside the setting of Quillen models we include Deligne simple of mixed Hodge complexes. We prove here that the simple functor induces an equivalence on the corresponding localized categories. We also describe a natura…
The paper contains a collection of results related to weight structures, $t$-structures, and (more generally) to torsion pairs. For any weight structure $w$ we study (co)homological pure functors; these "ignore all weights except weight zero" and have already found several applications. We also study virtual $t$-truncations of cohomological functors coming from $w$. These are closely related to $t$-structures; so we prove in several cases (including certain categories of coherent sheaves) that $w$ "gives" a $t$-structure (that is adjacent or $Φ$-orthogonal to it). We also study in detail "well…
We construct a category of fibrant objects $\mathbb{C}\langle P\rangle$ in the sense of K. Brown from any indexed frame (a kind of indexed poset generalizing triposes) $P$, and show that its homotopy category is the Barr-exact category $\mathbb{C}[P]$ of partial equivalence relations and compatible functional relations. In particular this gives a presentation of realizability toposes as homotopy categories. We give criteria for the existence of left and right derived functors to functors $\mathbb{C}\langleΦ\rangle : \mathbb{C}\langle P\rangle\to \mathbb{C}\langle Q\rangle$ induced by finite-me…
Univalence was first defined in the setting of homotopy type theory by Voevodsky, who also (along with Kapulkin and Lumsdaine) adapted it to a model categorical setting, which was subsequently generalized to locally Cartesian closed presentable $\infty$-categories by Gepner and Kock. These definitions were used to characterize various $\infty$-categories as models of type theories. We give a definition for univalent morphisms in finitely complete $\infty$-categories that generalizes the aforementioned definitions and completely focuses on the $\infty$-categorical aspects, characterizing it via…
In this article we establish the foundations of the Morita homotopy theory of C*-categories. Concretely, we construct a cofibrantly generated simplicial symmetric monoidal Quillen model structure M_Mor on the category C*cat1 of small unital C*-categories. The weak equivalences are the Morita equivalences and the cofibrations are the *-functors which are injective on objects. As an application, we obtain an elegant description of the Brown-Green-Rieffel Picard group in the associated Morita homotopy category Ho(M_Mor). We then prove that the Morita homotopy category is semi-additive. By group c…
