We study when the heart of a t-structure in a triangulated category $\mathcal{D}$ with coproducts is AB5 or a Grothendieck category. If $\mathcal{D}$ satisfies Brown representability, a t-structure has an AB5 heart with an injective cogenerator and coproduct-preserving associated homological functor if, and only if, the coaisle has a pure-injective t-cogenerating object. If $\mathcal{D}$ is standard well generated, such a heart is automatically a Grothendieck category. For compactly generated t-structures (in any ambient triangulated category with coproducts), we prove that the heart is a locally finitely presented Grothendieck category.
We use functor categories and the proofs rely on two main ingredients. Firstly, we express the heart of any t-structure in any triangulated category as a Serre quotient of the category of finitely presented additive functors for suitable choices of subcategories of the aisle or the co-aisle that we, respectively, call t-generating or t-cogenerating subcategories. Secondly, we study coproduct-preserving homological functors from $\mathcal{D}$ to complete AB5 abelian categories with injective cogenerators and classify them, up to a so-called computational equivalence, in terms of pure-injective objects in $\mathcal{D}$. This allows us to show that any standard well generated triangulated category $\mathcal{D}$ possesses a universal such coproduct-preserving homological functor, to develop a purity theory and to prove that pure-injective objects always cogenerate t-structures in such triangulated categories.
In this paper we revisit the problem of determining when the heart of a t-structure is a Grothendieck category, with special attention to the case of the Happel-Reiten-Smalø (HSR) t-structure in the derived category of a Grothendieck category associated to a torsion pair in the latter. We revisit the HRS tilting process deriving from it a lot of information on the HRS t-structures which have a projective generator or an injective cogenerator, and obtain several bijections between classes of pairs $(\mathcal{A},\mathbf{t})$ consisting of an abelian category and a torsion pair in it. We use thes…
We will give quiver presentations of the Grothendieck constructions of functors from a small category to the 2-category of $\Bbbk$-categories for a commutative ring $\Bbbk$.
The derived category $D[C,V]$ of the Grothendieck category of enriched functors $[C,V]$, where $V$ is a closed symmetric monoidal Grothendieck category and $C$ is a small $V$-category, is studied. We prove that if the derived category $D(V)$ of $V$ is a compactly generated triangulated category with certain reasonable assumptions on compact generators or $K$-injective resolutions, then the derived category $D[C,V]$ is also compactly generated triangulated. Moreover, an explicit description of these generators is given.
For a certain class of abelian categories, we show how to make sense of the "Euler characteristic" of an infinite projective resolution (or, more generally, certain chain complexes that are only bounded above), by passing to a suitable completion of the Grothendieck group. We also show that right-exact functors (or their left-derived functors) induce continuous homomorphisms of these completed Grothendieck groups, and we discuss examples and applications coming from categorification.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a locally noetherian Grothendieck category. In this paper we define and study the section functor on $\mathcal{A}$ with respect to an open subset of ASpec$\mathcal{A}$. Next we define and study local cohomology theory in $\mathcal{A}$ in terms of the section functors. Finally we study abstract local cohomology functor on the derived category $\mathcal{D}^+(\mathcal{A})$.
The Grothendieck construction is a process to form a single category from a diagram of small categories. In this paper, we extend the definition of the Grothendieck construction to diagrams of small categories enriched over a symmetric monoidal category satisfying certain conditions. Symmetric monoidal categories satisfying the conditions in this paper include the category of $k$-modules over a commutative ring $k$, the category of chain complexes, the category of simplicial sets, the category of topological spaces, and the category of modern spectra. In particular, we obtain a generalization …
The main objective of this paper is to construct a homotopy colimit functor on a category of functors taking values in the model category of quasi-categories.
We show that, under particular conditions, if a t-structure in the unbounded derived category of a locally coherent Grothendieck category restricts to the bounded derived category of its category of finitely presented objects, then its heart is itself a locally coherent Grothendieck category. Those particular conditions are always satisfied when the Grothendieck category is arbitrary and one considers the t-structure associated to a torsion pair in the category of finitely presented objects. They are also satisfied when one takes any compactly generated t-structure in the derived category of a…
This thesis deals with the general problem of determining when the heart $\mathcal{H}$ of a t-structure in a triangulated category $\mathcal{D}$ is a Grothendieck or a module category. As preliminaries, we study Grothendieck conditions AB3-AB5 for $\mathcal{H}$ in a very general setting. We then concentrate on two familiar examples of smashing t-structures. First, we consider that $\mathcal{D}=\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{G})$ is the (unbounded) derived category of a Grothendieck category $\mathcal{G}$ and that the t-structure is the one associated to a torsion pair $\mathbf{t}=(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{F…
In this article, we study the heart of a cotorsion pairs on an exact category and a triangulated category in a unified meathod, by means of the notion of an extriangulated category. We prove that the heart is abelian, and construct a cohomological functor to the heart. If the extriangulated category has enough projectives, this functor gives an equivalence between the heart and the category of coherent functors over the coheart modulo projectives. We also show how an n-cluster tilting subcategory of an extriangulated category gives rise to a family of cotorsion pairs with equivalent hearts.
In this article, we investigate the condition for the hearts of twin cotorsion pairs to be equivalent, compatibly with the associated functors. This is related to the vanishing of components of pairs through the associated functors.
In the preceding part (I) of this paper, we showed that for any torsion pair (i.e., $t$-structure without the shift-closedness) in a triangulated category, there is an associated abelian category, which we call the heart. Two extremal cases of torsion pairs are $t$-structures and cluster tilting subcategories. If the torsion pair comes from a $t$-structure, then its heart is nothing other than the heart of this $t$-structure. In this case, as is well known, by composing certain adjoint functors, we obtain a cohomological functor from the triangulated category to the heart. If the torsion pair …
We introduce the notion of asymptotic Grothendieck groups for abelian and triangulated categories that are both AB4 and AB4*. We study when the asymptotic Grothendieck group of the heart of a triangulated category with a t-structure is isomorphic to the asymptotic Grothendieck group of the triangulated category itself. We also explain a connexion with the notion of topological Grothendieck group from Achar-Stroppel. Finally, we compute the asymptotic Grothendieck group of some positive (dg-)algebras having a cone bounded, locally finite dimension.
In an arbitrary Grothendieck category, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the class of $\text{FP}_n$-injective objects to be a torsion class. By doing so, we propose a notion of $n$-hereditary categories. We also define and study the class of $\text{FP}_n$-flat objects in Grothendieck categories with a generating set of small projective objects, and provide several equivalent conditions for this class to be torsion-free. In the end, we present several applications and examples of $n$-hereditary categories in the contexts modules over a ring, chain complexes of modules and categori…
We study the transfer of (dual) relative CS-Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories. We consider fully faithful functors as well as adjoint pairs of functors. We give several applications to Grothendieck categories and, in particular, to (graded) module and comodule categories.
We show that there exists a canonical functor from the category of strict \infty-groupoids to the category of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids and that this functor is fully faithful. As a main ingredient, we prove that free strict \infty-groupoids on a globular pasting scheme are weakly contractible.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a Grothendieck category, let $\mathbf{t}=(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{F})$ be a torsion pair in $\mathcal{G}$ and let $(\mathcal{U}_\mathbf{t},\mathcal{W}_\mathbf{t})$ be the associated Happel-Reiten-Smal$ø$ t-structure in the derived category $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{G})$. We prove that the heart of this t-structure is a Grothendieck category if, and only if, the torsionfree class $\mathcal{F}$ is closed under taking direct limits in $\mathcal{G}$.
In this paper we study categories $(F,\mathbf{C},\mathbf{D})$ and $(\mathbb{F},\mathbf{C},\mathbf{Set})$ and prove them to be fibred on $\mathbf{C}$. Then we examine Grothendieck construction in the context of an ordinary functor $F: \mathbf{C} \rightarrow \mathbf{D}$ through the concept of trivial categorification, using an appropriate functor $\mathbf{F}: \mathbf{C} \xrightarrow{F} \mathbf{D} \xrightarrow{I} \mathbf{Cat}$ to construct $\int_{\mathbf{C}^{op}} \bar{\mathbf{F}}$. This category characterizes a functor as an abstract right category action while its dual $\mathcal{X} \rtimes_{\mat…
We relate the relative nerve $\mathrm{N}_f(\mathcal{D})$ of a diagram of simplicial sets $f \colon \mathcal{D} \to \mathsf{sSet}$ with the Grothendieck construction $\mathsf{Gr} F$ of a simplicial functor $F \colon \mathcal{D} \to \mathsf{sCat}$ in the case where $f = \mathrm{N} F$. We further show that any strict monoidal simplicial category $\mathcal{C}$ gives rise to a functor $\mathcal{C}^\bullet \colon Δ^\mathrm{op} \to \mathsf{sCat}$, and that the relative nerve of $\mathrm{N} \mathcal{C}^\bullet$ is the operadic nerve $\mathrm{N}^\otimes(\mathcal{C})$. Finally, we show that all the abov…
A Mackey type decomposition for group actions on abelian categories is described. This allows us to define new Mackey functors which associates to any subgroup the $K$-theory of the corresponding equivariantized abelian category. In the case of an action by tensor autoequivalences the Mackey functor at the level of Grothendieck rings has a Green functor structure. As an application we give a description of the Grothendieck rings of equivariantized fusion categories under group actions by tensor autoequivalences on graded fusion categories.
We lift the standard equivalence between fibrations and indexed categories to an equivalence between monoidal fibrations and monoidal indexed categories, namely weak monoidal pseudofunctors to the 2-category of categories. In doing so, we investigate the relation between this `global' monoidal structure where the total category is monoidal and the fibration strictly preserves the structure, and a `fibrewise' one where the fibres are monoidal and the reindexing functors strongly preserve the structure, first hinted by Shulman. In particular, when the domain is cocartesian monoidal, lax monoidal…
The description of algebraic structure of n-fold loop spaces can be done either using the formalism of topological operads, or using variations of Segal's $Γ$-spaces. The formalism of topological operads generalises well to different categories yielding such notions as $\mathbb E_n$-algebras in chain complexes, while the $Γ$-space approach faces difficulties. In this paper we discuss how, by attempting to extend the Segal approach to arbitrary categoires, one arrives to the problem of understanding "weak" sections of a homotopical Grothendieck fibration. We propose a model for such sections, c…
We study liftings of abelian model structures to categories of chain complexes and construct a realization functor from the derived category of a Grothendieck abelian category equipped with a cofibrantly generated, hereditary abelian model structure to the homotopy category of that model structure.
We investigate certain categorical aspects of Voevodsky's triangulated categories of motives. For this, various recollements for Grothendieck categories of enriched functors and their derived categories are established. In order to extend these recollements further with respect to Serre's localization, the concept of the (strict) Voevodsky property for Serre localizing subcategories is introduced. This concept is inspired by the celebrated Voevodsky theorem on homotopy invariant presheaves with transfers. As an application, it is shown that Voevodsky's triangulated categories of motives fit in…
In this paper, we first construct some complete cotorson pairs on the category $\mathbb{C}_N(\mathcal{G})$ of unbounded $N$-complexes of Grothendieck category $\mathcal{G}$, from two given cotorsion pairs in $\mathcal{G}$. Next as an application, we focus on particular homotopy categories and the existence of adjoint functors between them. These are an $N$-complex version of the results were shown by Neeman in the category of ordinary complexes.
In this paper, we deal with quantum theories on presheaves and sheaves on context categories consisting of commutative von Neumann algebras of bounded operators on a Hilbert space, from two viewpoints. One is to reduce presheaf-based topos quantum theory via sheafification, and the other is to import quantum probabilities to the reduced sheaf quantum theory. The first is done by means of a functor that selects some expedient contexts. It defines a Grothendieck topology on the category consisting of all contexts, hence, induces a sheaf topos on which we construct a downsized quantum theory. Als…
We present a slight variation on a notion of weak \infty-groupoid introduced by Grothendieck in Pursuing Stacks and we study the homotopy theory of these \infty-groupoids. We prove that the obvious definition for homotopy groups of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids does not depend on any choice. This allows us to give equivalent characterizations of weak equivalences of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids, generalizing a well-known result for strict \infty-groupoids. On the other hand, given a model category M in which every object is fibrant, we construct, following Grothendieck, a fundamental \infty-g…
Auslander-Reiten duality for module categories is generalised to Grothendieck abelian categories that have a sufficient supply of finitely presented objects. It is shown that Auslander-Reiten duality amounts to the fact that the functor Ext^1(C,-) into modules over the endomorphism ring of C admits a partially defined right adjoint when C is a finitely presented object. This result seems to be new even for module categories. For appropriate schemes over a field, the connection with Serre duality is discussed.
In the setting of compactly generated triangulated categories, we show that the heart of a (co)silting t-structure is a Grothendieck category if and only if the (co)silting object satisfies a purity assumption. Moreover, in the cosilting case the previous conditions are related to the coaisle of the t-structure being a definable subcategory. If we further assume our triangulated category to be algebraic, it follows that the heart of any nondegenerate compactly generated t-structure is a Grothendieck category.
For an exact category $\mathcal{E}$, we study the Butler's condition "AR=Ex": the relation of the Grothendieck group of $\mathcal{E}$ is generated by Auslander-Reiten conflations. Under some assumptions, we show that AR=Ex is equivalent to that $\mathcal{E}$ has finitely many indecomposables. This can be applied to functorially finite torsion(free) classes and contravariantly finite resolving subcategories of the module category of an artin algebra, and the category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over an order which is Gorenstein or has finite global dimension. Also we showed that under some weaker…
We study the transfer of (dual) relative Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories, and we deduce the transfer of (dual) relative Baer property. We also give applications to Grothendieck categories, comodule categories and (graded) module categories, with emphasis on endomorphism rings.
We prove that the 2-category Grt of Grothendieck abelian categories with colimit preserving functors and natural transformations is a bicategory of fractions in the sense of Pronk of the 2-category Site of linear sites with continuous morphisms of sites and natural transformations. This result can potentially be used to make the tensor product of Grothendieck categories from earlier work by Lowen, Shoikhet and the author into a bi-monoidal structure on Grt.
The center $Z(\mathcal{A})$ of an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ is the endomorphism ring of the identity functor on that category. A localizing subcategory of a Grothendieck category $\mathcal{C}$ is said to be stable if it is stable under essential extensions. The set $\mathbf{L}^{st}(\mathcal{C})$ of stable localizing subcategories of $\mathcal{C}$ is partially ordered under reverse inclusion. We show $\mathcal{L} \mapsto Z(\mathcal{C}/\mathcal{L})$ defines a sheaf of commutative rings on $\mathbf{L}^{st}(\mathcal{C})$ with respect to finite coverings. When $\mathcal{C}$ is assumed to be lo…
In this paper we introduce the notion of a categorical Mackey functor. This categorical notion allows us to obtain new Mackey functors by passing to Quillen's $K$-theory of the corresponding abelian categories. In the case of an action by monoidal autoequivalences on a monoidal category the Mackey functor obtained at the level of Grothendieck rings has in fact a Green functor structure.
Let $k$ be a field. We show that locally presentable, $k$-linear categories $\mathcal{C}$ dualizable in the sense that the identity functor can be recovered as $\coprod_i x_i\otimes f_i$ for objects $x_i\in \mathcal{C}$ and left adjoints $f_i$ from $\mathcal{C}$ to $\mathrm{Vect}_k$ are products of copies of $\mathrm{Vect}_k$. This partially confirms a conjecture by Brandenburg, the author and T. Johnson-Freyd. Motivated by this, we also characterize the Grothendieck categories containing an object $x$ with the property that every object is a copower of $x$: they are precisely the categories o…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and let $\mathcal D(R)$ be its (unbounded) derived category. We show that all compactly generated t-structures in $\mathcal D(R)$ associated to a left bounded filtration by supports of Spec$(R)$ have a heart which is a Grothendieck category. Moreover, we identify all compactly generated t-structures in $\mathcal D(R)$ whose heart is a module category. As geometric consequences for a compactly generated t-structure $(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{U}^\perp [1])$ in the derived category $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{X})$ of a Noetherian scheme $\mathbb{X}$, we get the follo…
We study determinant functors which are defined on a triangulated category and take values in a Picard category. The two main results are the existence of a universal determinant functor for every small triangulated category, and a comparison theorem for determinant functors on a triangulated category with a non-degenerate bounded t-structure and determinant functors on its heart. For a small triangulated category T we give a natural definition of groups K_0(T) and K_1(T) in terms of the universal determinant functor on T, and we show that K_i(T)=K_i(E) for i=0 and 1 if T has a non-degenerate …
In this article, we study localizations of hearts of cotorsion pairs (U,V) where U is rigid on an extriangulated category B. The hearts of such cotorsion pairs are equivalent to the functor categories over the stable category of U. Inspired by Marsh and Palu, we consider the mutation of U that induces a cotorsion pair (U',V'). Generally speaking, the hearts of (U,V) and (U',V') are not equivalent to each other, but we will give a generalized pseudo-Morita equivalence between certain localizations of their hearts.
In this paper we present the notion of ``Deligne localized functors'', an avatar of the derived functors, whose definition is inspired by Deligne in [SGA 4,XVII]. Their definition involves the notions of Ind and Pro categories, they always exist and are characterized in terms of universal properties. The classical localized functor, in the sense of Grothendieck and Verdier, exists if suitable conditions are verified for the Deligne localized functors. We apply these notions to triangulated and derived categories.
Consider the obvious functor from the unbounded derived category of all finitely generated modules over a left noetherian ring $R$ to the unbounded derived category of all modules. We answer the natural question whether this functor defines an equivalence onto the full subcategory of complexes with finitely generated cohomology modules in two special cases. If $R$ is a quasi-Frobenius ring of infinite global dimension, then this functor is not full. If $R$ has finite left global dimension, this functor is an equivalence. We also prove variants of the latter assertion for left coherent rings, f…
